Inspiration grows during ‘Garden Week’ National Garden Week, June 3–9, is a nationwide and local celebration of gardening and preserving the planet for future generations. Over 5,000 garden clubs across the country help their communities celebrate, including the Burlington Garden Club, which serves the greater
Burlington area. The Burlington Garden Club is using the theme “Inspire Yourself, Inspire Others, with Gardening” to highlight the contributions gardeners make to the beautification and environmental health of the greater Burlington area.

“To all gardeners, this is a week to inspire and be inspired,” Burlington Garden Club coordinator Nancy Bell said. Doris Van Mullen, club co- president, added: “Nurturing plants has great benefits and lends to the growth of spirit across the community, as well as better attitudes toward nutrition and health. All this adds up to making the world a greener, healthier and more livable place.” Events during the week (see sidebar) emphasize the cornerstone elements of gardening, including sustainable gardening, awareness of environmental issues, enhanced knowledge of biology and ecology, appreciation of community and a stewardship of the future. “Gardening is one of the most enjoyable, rewarding, passionate and therapeutic activities that nearly everyone can take part in inside and outdoors,” Bell said. “Garnish the thrill of a small space of your own; go to the garden center and purchase a trowel and flowers, plant them and wait for blooms to arrive. This is the excitement and fun of gardening.” For more information, visit bgcvt. org.
