High School Graduation - A Turning Point
Lorna Hamilton Editor
Every year a new group of teenagers graduate from high school and begin a new chapter in their lives. For some teens, the moment they start junior high they are just waiting for the day they graduate senior high and branch off into the big bad world, they crave the independence of becoming an adult, making their own life choices whether they are good or bad. While for some teenagers the thought of becoming an adult is scary and are just not ready to become the independent adult we wish them to be. Is this because of their
home environment? In a way, I think it is. When I grew up, I had no choice but to grow up fast and mature, but nowadays we often keep our children close due to fears we have for them and not let them develop as quickly as we did. So many graduates believe they have matured to the point of being able to handle all that life will throw at them regardless of the magnitude of the issues, and then quickly discover they have not. This is not a bad thing it is just another step in their adventure in life. Graduating high school is a turning point in every teenager’s life; however it is just the beginning, and it is a time full of excitement and some sadness. Excitement for the actual day, dressing up in beautiful gowns for the young ladies
and suits for the young men. They are bursting at the seams with the anticipation of the beginning the new chapter in their lives. Sadness because people who they have become friends with and saw every day will now be moving on in the directions of their hopes and dreams. This is your time and your turning point in life; it is easy nowadays to stay in touch with lifelong friends. A few things I have learned since my graduation from high school 27 years ago that may be helpful throughout your journey is to: First, never say “I can’t.” Can’t is a word that needs to be removed from your language, anyone can succeed if they put their mind to it. Secondly, life is a never-ending learning
5
experience, never stop learning!! Thirdly, be smart about your finances; live within your means and try to save for your future and the rainy days because they will happen. Fourthly, keep pursuing your hopes and dreams. It’s never too late to become what you want to be! And finally, never be afraid to ask for help if needed. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, it is what keeps you moving forward. Life is full of ups and downs; it never runs smoothly. Explore all your possibilities, you may be surprised! I never thought I would end up in the world of journalism, but here I am, and I love it. You’re never too old to change your direction in life! We wish all the graduates from this year the best in all your future endeavours in life.

Dear Editor, As a Graduate of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program and a Safety Ambassador for the PLAYSAFE Program, I have met kids who
