or an article to celebrate the 30th birthday of La Fantastique, director Philip Bruchez suggested I interview one of the founders of the ski school, Denis Bertholet. I arranged to meet the legendary mountain guide and photographer at an exhibition of his photos taken on an expedition to Nepal back in 1954. My first impression was that one article could never do justice to M. Bertholet lifetime of stories – it would take a book, or two. Already I was sidetracked wanting to know more about his incredible pictures from the Himalayas and had to remind myself that this is a piece to celebrate the 30th birthday of the ski school. I was then sidetracked discussing his early days in Verbier and the first photo shop which he opened back in 1952. However, all of these factors play a part in his involvement establishing La Fantastique with six friends back in 1979. Denis’s ambition as a young boy was to become a mountain guide. His parents were not particularly keen on their 16 year-old son’s dream and encouraged him to study a profession - Denis chose photography. After three years studying and a stint working in Zurich, Denis suggested to a friend that there was a small village in Valais, which looked like it was becoming rather popular. At this stage there was only one small lift in the resort and a
