Constructing Journal Week 10

Site visit of the Pavilion Materials used: Mainly timber (Plywood, Laminated veneer lumber) Concrete and steel Aluminium Plasterboard (internal walls of the site). *Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) are glued together to increase its thickness. It is cheaper than real timber and it is strong enough to support loads.

LVL used for the footings The timber wall and timber ceiling are built with the method of tongue and groove. It can interlock between pieces of timber.

Example of the interlocked timber is being used

Architectural and Structural elements: Bricks are covered by concrete. It takes around 2 weeks for the formation of the concrete. There are reinforced bars in between the concrete for reinforcement. They are placed horizontally and every 400mm of concrete, a vertical bar is placed. For the concrete stairs, the reinforced bars are curved at the top part.

Timber slab is used for the flooring. It is a one way slab.

The formwork of the site is the timber form.

The site is constructed of steel frame. The steels are being cut and brought to the site. Therefore, it would only take a short time (few days) to panel. The sub structure is constructed of timber frame. The steel beam is part of the structure and the vertical timber as part of the frame.

The joints between steel and timber are usually with the metal anchors. For the joints joining two timbers are usually a nailed joint. Sill is present. It acts as a load bearing element. It is placed at the opening of walls as to transfer loads to the main structure of the building. Steel bracings (a cross shape) are at the wall and the ceiling to support and transfer loads, also to hold the shape.

Universal beams are used.

The ceiling is made up of timber. For the roof, it is a flat roof with mainly four layers in construction. Beams are lowest part. Purlins (steel) are placed on the beams. Over the purlins, there are the insulations (loose insulation, which installs into the finished roof through holes) and it finally comes to the roof sheeting. The hat batten is used. It provides fixing point of roof sheeting

Function: White wires on the ceiling for lighting. Glasses will be panelled to the space between the steel as the windows.

Box gutter is used for drainage. The storm water is collected by the box gutter and transfer to the downpipe. It is attached behind the steel bar to keep it in place. Outside the steel bar, there is a layer of flashing which is waterproofed.

The matal below is made of aluminium, it can found a kind of flashing by placing one

reversely into the other.
