Letter to Our Readers

Having gotten to this column, you may have noticed that this issue of Venues NJ does not have a photo of an attractive young woman on its front cover (our standard trademark). We’ve taken a slight departure to revisit an event that took place a year ago: Superstorm Sandy, its devastating effects and the rebuilding efforts that have been accomplished over the past 12 months. While most news reports over the past year have focused on effects and efforts among residential areas and communities, our editor looked specifically at the storm’s influence on the hospitality industry sector. A good portion of this issue’s editorial carries this theme. Starting with our monthly Restaurant Profile, our writer spoke with a very strong woman who was personally and dramatically affected by Sandy and to this day is still “in limbo,” yet determined to rebuild. Meet and read about “Gigi” Dorr, owner of JakeaBob’s in Union Beach. Next, a full-time babysitter (as a result of Sandy) and part time waitress/bartender who has worked at JakeaBob’s for the past five years, also experienced the devastating effects of the hurricane and strengthened her resolve as a result. Meet Nicole Strozak, November’s Mixologist-of-the-Month. Staying with our theme, we rekindled our relationship with a band we met three years ago, when it was relatively unknown and playing at a local tavern in Hightstown. Since then, After the Reign has been on a whirlwind tour and dramatically increased its fanbase, thanks to its song that has become New Jersey’s unofficial motto and that perfectly personifies its people. Read more about After the Reign and its song, “Jersey Strong.” Now, for a change of pace and a little comic relief, our writer Steve O spoke with a young man who got started as a stand-up comic through the urging of a professor while in college. Gordon Baker-Bone got his experience and built his reputation by entering comedy competitions where he learned to perform in front of large crowds. His ultimate goals: writing, acting, movies and performing. We hope you enjoy and appreciate the presentation of this month’s commemorative issue of Venues NJ. It is our continued mission to bring you a monthly publication that is timely, relevant and informative, all to enhance your dining and entertainment leisure activities. Thank you.

JakeaBob’s OFF THE BAY, UNION BEACH

by CLARE MARIE CELANO

A

ngelita Liaguno-Dorr, better known as, “Gigi,” is not giving in -- or giving up -her bar and restaurant business.

Dorr took her 14-year bar and restaurant business, JakeaBob’s Bay in Union Beach, and moved it to a location about a mile away, out of necessity. Her original business was destroyed when Hurricane Sandy pummeled Union Beach in October of 2012. Dorr is not shy about admitting her frustration in dealing with what she calls, “bureaucratic red tape,” and insurance companies, applying for loans, and still not hearing what she wants to hear. She says she’s been “very vocal” about it. This frustration and feeling as though she is in limbo has become a part of her daily round. “We are in our darkest hours here. Everything is still a mess. The town is still not back, and we cannot yet move forward,” Dorr says. But it doesn’t stop this powerhouse restaurant owner from working in the business she loves every day. Yet…she continues to dream of rebuilding her bayfront location in Union Beach. n the meantime, she’s not letting anything stop her from serving up food, entertainment and camaraderie to her old customers and new ones in her new location Jakeabob’s Off the Bay. Opting not to sit around and wait for the time when she can get back to the bay, Dorr moved her restaurant, named for her two sons, Jake, 15, and Bobby, 18, to a location about a mile inland, in the old Seven Days Bar. Dorr took a lease on the property to serve customers and stay in business. She says she had a great deal of help -- and hope -- from community volunteers. “These people have

I 10

so much spirit and heart,” she describes. “This is our bridge, but I still want to go back home.” Dorr was inspired to take something of the old with her to the new location. Using her name (Dorr) as the basis for her idea, she came up with a plan to take the doors from lost homes in Union Beach and use them as tabletops in the new location. To Dorr and to others who have lost so much, the repurposed doors have not only become décor but are symbols of hope, strength and remembrance of what the town and its people have endured. Additional décor includes stark photos of the storm and its damage -- reminders of what the town sustained, as well as a lovely photo of the first location, before the storm, as it proudly sat amid a pink and purple sunset. Dorr welcomes patrons to her new location with tempting meal selections, appetizers, entrees and desserts. Starters include Buffalo Shrimp with Bleu cheese for dipping or Fried Mozzarella with Marinara sauce for dipping; Friscia Fries, (fries, bacon, sour cream and cheese), or Mussels Mediterranean; and Drunken Shrimp and Clams. Try the JakeaBob’s Salad, with BBQ grilled chicken, mozzarella and tomatoes over Caesar salad. Or Cajun Tuna Brushetta Salad. Paninis are also reminders of the past with names such as “Jersey Strong,” or “The Hope Tree.” Or enjoy Juicy JakeaBob’s juicy burger with American cheese bacon, cheese and crispy onion strings. tap are Poor Man’s Surf and Turf Burger or Cajun Grilled Chicken Bistro. er menu includes “tribute” dishes to all those who helped in the storm, including, “Firehouse French Dip,” and the “First Responder Reuben. Entrees are plentiful and are served with house fries, such a JakeaBob Scampi, Angel Pasta in a garlic butter and wine sauce or Panko Crusted Chicken with mozzarella, tomatoes, fresh herbs and balsamic glaze. Don’t leave without a tempting, scrumptious dessert, such as her Signature Cheesecake in a glass or Chocolate Delight Cake. Live entertainment rocks Jakeabob’s Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9:00 pm.“We have different themed nights with our DJ, who was with us at Jakeabob’s Bay -- The Jersey Jesters. We have Country Night, Karaoke Night, Old School Night, and are always thinking up new ideas,” Dorr says. Bands include some who performed at Jakeabob’s Bay, such as Billy’s Fault, Shore Thing Duo, The Clam Diggers, and Contraband. Although old customers may miss the sounds and sights of the bay as they eat their meal, there is so much more to Jakeabob’s than a body of water. Visit this cozy bar and restaurant, enjoy delicious food, great entertainment, your favorite sports games on TV and most of all, feel the community spirit enmeshed in this business, and enjoy the company of its owner, who is the heart and soul of JakeaBob’s, “on” or “off ” the bay.

Nicole Strozak BY CLARE MARIE CELANO

Nicole Strozak, of Lawrence Harbor, has a fulltime job babysitting a four-year-old girl. Yet, despite her 40-hour work schedule, she maintains a weekend job at JakeaBob’s in Union Beach. Why? “I have worked for JakeaBob’s for so long, I can’t imagine not working for Gigi,” Strozak said. The bartender/server at JakeaBob’s began working at the bar/restaurant for owner Gigi Dorr about five years ago; she intends to stay, despite her full-time job. Like so many others, Strozak was out of a job after Hurricane Sandy pummeled the area, taking a good deal of JakeaBob’s with it. Dorr relocated her business into the old Seven Days Bar, about a mile inland from her old location. According to Strozak, a lot of employees came

with her. “We helped her get the new place ready,” she recalls. All of Dorr’s employees volunteered their time to help their boss for the months it took to get the new place up and running. Strozak took the job as full-time babysitter JakeaBob’s closed down. “This job is the only good thing that came out of that storm,” she emphasizes. “It allowed me to meet Eva, who I love, and her wonderful family.” Strozak, who graduated from New Jersey City University with a degree in early education, says she will continue to search for the right teaching position, but right now she’s happy with both her jobs. She enjoys working as a server/bartender because she loves interacting with her customers. “It’s a fun atmosphere,” Strozak remarks. “From my years at JakeaBob’s, I’ve formed some really awesome relationships with customers. The customers I would see all the time became regulars and I look forward to seeing them on my shifts. I’ve also met some really wonderful people in this industry and it makes going to work a pleasure.” Dorr is an integral part of the atmosphere for Strozak. So is her fiancé, James Murphy, “Murph,” who has bartended at JakeaBob’s for the past 13 years.

The two met while working at JakeaBob’s. Murphy, who has a college degree in business management, has worked almost exclusively at JakeaBob’s with the exception of a brief break at another job. “It’s like that here though,” Strozak says. “People are here for a long time. And, if they do leave for a little while, they always come back and work here. We’re like one big family here. Gigi has done so much for all of us (her employees). Once you’ve worked for Gigi, you don’t ever want to work anywhere else.”

year ago, New Jersey rose from the watery depths of the worst disaster in its history and showed the true nature of those who call this state home. After being turned into a national joke in recent years, those who live along the Jersey shore demonstrated the embodiment of the area with their perseverance and will to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives. They were Jersey strong in the wake of the third-costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, behind only Hurricane Katrina and the 1988 drought, and it was After the Reign whose song became New Jersey’s unofficial motto that perfectly personified the people.

It was Strevens who wrote “Jersey Strong” shortly after the storm that eventually won the Jersey Shore Soundoff contest this summer, beating out over 230 other entries. As the winner of the contest, After the Reign opened for the Spin Doctors at Stone Pony on September 7, which was one of After the Reign’s greatest moments. “Any time you play with a nationally recognized artist it’s a highlight,” said Burlett. “It’s one of those songs now for people that when we play the first beginning chords of the song they know what it is, which is an incredible, humbling experience.”

usic has amazing power, far more than any storm can generate, and Jersey Strong has helped bring the people of the area together. “When we first debuted this song at Stone Pony, people who were there were affected by it,” Burlett explained, noting the instantaneous positive reaction. When they were finally able to play again at their home base at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como, their music helped, everyone get a little closer to returning to normal. “We noticed that people just wanted us to come back. We wanted to go back and we said, you know what, if anything else let’s just get together and let’s just have music-- and that’s what we did,” said Burlett.“Music has done that for a lot of people.”

h av e at it.” The forever-altered landscape of the Jersey shore still hasn’t been restored to its former glory. In fact more damage was done on September 17 when a six-alarm fire broke out on the Seaside boardwalk cause by electrical wires that were corroded by sand and saltwater from Superstorm Sandy. It was another reminder of the awe-inspiring power of Mother Nature and our state’s ability to continue on under any circumstances. A lot of money and time has been donated to help those who lost everything, but we did it with our heads held high and After the Reign summed up our resilience perfectly with “Jersey Strong.” For schedules, band member bios, merchandise and more, and to listen to “Jersey Strong,” and other original recordings, check out AftertheReign.net and facebook.com/afterthereignnj.

Though they had no intentions of benefitting personally from the song, After the Reign did garner more attention because of it. “We have an amazing group of fans and those people have taken this and elevated it to what you see. What it’s done for us as a band, it’s given us a chance to get our song out there, not only on a local level, but on a national level,” said Burlett. “But by all means if we can play our song and people can smile and laugh and carry on,

Superstorm Sandy… A Year Later!

Hurricane Sandy Impact | NOAA-NASA GOES Project Oct. 29 3:20 PM CST

by Lisa Schofield

Reliability.

“Everyone get the hell off the beach!” declared Governor Chris Christie at a press conference before August 2011’s seasonal storm, Hurricane Irene. This particular hurricane was preceded by a media storm of dire warnings. But she came and went without too much damage in her wake.

In fact, according to Marilou Halvorsen, President of the New Jersey Restaurant Association (Trenton), a full 100 percent of Monmouth and Ocean County restaurants lost power. Some were back online for a muchneeded re-open in a few days, others took a month, and still others are in the process of full rebuild for re-open. Sandy also didn’t just snuff out the light; she compelled the Atlantic Ocean to sweep millions of gallons of saltwater into and onto terrain beyond dunes; and that saltwater brought with it beach sand and tons of other detritus -- it wasn’t merely water that flooded out homes. Numerous photos taken after the tempest show roads obliterated by beach sand and debris, and destroyed homes with several feet of sand encroaching first story windows. Sandy was and remains known as a “Superstorm.” Others call her a “100-year storm.” A rare combination of meteorological events converged to create what is the second costliest hurricane in history (behind only Katrina), its total damage swath was approximately $65 billion. According to an October 13, 2013 report

So when the last week of October 2012 came with a late-season hurricane named Sandy brewing in the Atlantic, and everyone focused on gearing up for a boo-dacious Halloween, folks prepared for a day of wet, windy weather. It wasn’t until a day before when the warnings became extremely dire. One memorable example is NJ 12 meteorologist Dave Curren, who, in one broadcast about potential damage, stated, “Trust me, you will lose power.” His prognostication was correct as most of the state’s power facilities were obliterated. More than 2,600,000 homes and businesses had no power, according to an October 31 2012 report from the US Department of Energy Office of Electricity Delivery & Energy November 2013

on Huffington Post.com entitled “A Year Later, Hurricane Sandy’s Effects Still Linger In New Jersey,” author Wayne Parry reported, “As of Sept. 30, $5.6 billion in aid had been paid out to New Jersey storm victims, including $3.5 billion from the National Flood Insurance Program and $415 million in FEMA grants to individuals or households.” Last October 27, Sandy had weakened to a tropical storm, but then re-strengthened quickly to a category 1 hurricane. In the early hours of October 29, overnight, the tempest made a direct hit in Brigantine as a post-tropical

cyclone with hurricane-force winds. According to Wikipedia, Sandy strengthened briefly as a category 2 on the morning of October 29 -- with a wind diameter of approximately 1,150 miles (New Jersey itself is 166 miles long, top to bottom). Those who awakened on the morning of October 29 were greeted with bright sunshine and somewhat chilly temperatures, so at odds with the signs of destruction everywhere -downed trees, power lines, roofs and shutters ripped apart and strewn all over. Businesses, every last one of them, closed. We were forced to live without our modern trappings -- TV, cellular service -- and to re-experience what family time should be about: togetherness sans entertainment distractions. For many, board games re-emerged from closets and attics to while away a little bit 18

of time. Those who got power restored immediately became hosts to others. We all shared our homes, grateful for the ability to once again take a hot shower, make coffee and food, and turn on the TV where we were all glued to continual reports of the devastation in Sandy’s wake. We watched Governor Christie tour the state in his now famous blue-fleece zip-up jacket, make constant updates and declare repeatedly that we will rebuild; we are a state of strong, determined people. In the ensuing weeks and months as power was restored, gas, food and other products became available once again, and life gradually returned to some semblance of new norm -- fundraisers for Sandy relief cropped up and blossomed. From the mammoth concert “12-1212,” to hyper-local drop-offs, the Garden State became The Giving State. We gave, we shared, we cared. And, to our credit, we still do.

single-minded goal of reopening. “It was amazing to see how this industry pulled together to help each other and their communities during this difficult time,”

Halvorsen reflects. “ Even when faced with destruction of their own business, they put that aside to help others. They define the meaning of hospitality!” But there are still some restaurants whose doors -and kitchens -- are closed. “A majority of businesses are back up and running but unfortunately there is a significant amount that are still out of business – mostly due to non-payment from their insurance policies,” reports Halvorsen. She adds

Restaurant Recovery

If it’s one thing we all need to do every day, more than once, is consume food and beverages. The explosion of specialty eats such as gourmet food trucks, cupcake and cronut bakeries, new ethnic cuisines, and the growing emphasis of chefs using fresh ingredients from local farms attests to how much New Jerseyans enjoy eating damn good food. Superstorm Sandy made a valiant attempt at wiping out our supply of gastronomic delights -- but she almost succeeded. New Jersey resilience is superhuman, it seems, and many have rebounded, refusing to be terrorized by a tempest. Restaurateurs and many others pulled together to achieve the

that a priority is to get those businesses up and running as soon as possible. Further, she notes, we can all continue to help: “Visit your favorite restaurant, especially if you know they went through some difficult times,”

she encourages. “Restaurants employ locally and are vital to their communities for jobs, and revenue they generate in the form of taxes.” For her enthusiasm and efforts leading the NJRA, Halvorsen was honored on October 16 with the Anchor Award by the Jersey Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau (JSCVB) at its fourth annual Big Wave Awards ceremony. The NJRA, by the way, represents approximately 25,000 food and bar establishments in NJ. Speaking of the JSCVB, it had quite the herculean task this spring-- convincing vacationers beyond the NJ borders and throughout the nation that the Sandy-ravaged shoreline and boardwalks were definitely on track to welcome back visitors. In April, a donation of $40,000 from Thomas Donovan, publisher of the Asbury Park Press, was given to the JSCVB on behalf of the newspaper. This was followed on October 16 at the aforementioned Big Wave Awards ceremony by a donation of $50,000 by Donovan on behalf of the Asbury Park Press. Accepting this second check, Robert Hilton, executive director of the JSCVB, noted that the Asbury Park Press’ first gift helped his agency to more aggressively market the “we’re open!” message to not only 42 states -- but 13 nations. Renowned restaurateur Tim McLoone, recounts how his establishments fared in the wake of the meteorological monster. The Rum Runner, on the riverfront in Sea Bright, not only lost power, its entire deck sunk into the river, and five feet of water found its way within. “We are still hoping to rebuild,” he says, of this venerable restaurant. Part November 2013

of the proposed construction at the Rum Runner will be building the structure eight feet higher, depending upon mandated building codes. “We really only experienced rising water flooding the first floor and no damage upstairs,” McLoone says. “The sadness about Sea Bright is that there will be a major residential and commercial changes over the next five years – raising structures up to eight feet, elimination of smaller homes and apartment/condo complexes along with an evolution of all coastal towns preparing for more superstorms,” he adds.

continue to best the hurricane hellion. McLoone calls the people of the Jersey Shore “eternal optimists.” Ed Brannagan, assistant general manager, Martell’s Tiki Bar, Point Pleasant Beach, reports that the popular establishment did suffer significant damage to its pier -- “but we were very fortunate that the main frame of our building withstood the storm. However, we lost everything from the Tiki Bar out. But inside needed just some minor repairs and cleanup. We were without power for a few weeks but with

Meanwhile, McLoone’s Pier House (in Long Branch) had no structural damage in the main restaurant, however, all of the technical equipment was under the building at sea level. “We suffered at least $100,000 worth of damage there and thankfully, reopened Pier House in about one month following Sandy.” Over in Asbury Park, the storm dragged nearly two feet of sand inside McLoone’s Asbury Grille, and the power, of course, was knocked out. “We reopened the Asbury Grille and The Supper Club, located upstairs, right before New Year’s Eve,” McLoone reports. The Asbury Park structure is a mid-century landmark, and McLoone notes that it “withstood excessive destruction; we only had to replace some doors and windows.” A year later, he says, he and his staff are unbelievably finding some leftover Sandy sand when cleaning post shift! Doesn’t that just characterize this superstorm’s aftermath, 12 months later -- things are still being found, whether it’s damage or property. Such discoveries will likely continue for quite a while, whether it’s a memento having been previously buried in sandy debris, or a crack in a foundation. But the fabled Jersey spirit will November 2013

our main generator we were able to start work immediately.” The Martell’s team began working on cleaning up two days after the storm, which was the first day the crew (and others) were allowed back into Pt. Pleasant Beach. Through some incredible hard work and many long hours doing so, Martell’s reopened the inside of its building three weeks after the storm. And the team didn’t stop there -they energized true giving spirit, which was so sorely needed. “We honored all of our contracted parties all through the holiday season. We were very fortunate to be open and we did all we could to help anybody out that need help. We cooked meals for emergency workers, fed the National Guard who were stationed in Bay Head Fire Department and hosted a few benefits to help all the people of

Pt. Pleasant Beach.” Brannagan is still in awe

of how much the Martell’s crew accomplished, with singleminded vigor. “ The effort that our team put in to get this up and going was amazing, as much as we work together many hours through the year we all pulled together to make this one solid effort,” he relates. “From cleaning up debris to doing anything we could to help the building process. Our female managers worked all winter long right beside us running garbage and debris as well as moving lumber. It was a great effort by all to make sure we were open for the Summer of 2013. I had originally wanted to open our full pier on Easter Sunday and we almost made it. With some finishing touched we were able to reopen everything two weeks after Easter.”

Visitors noticed the brand new pier, which was a major attraction all summer and autumn long. It is constructed purposefully

to be much stronger than what it replaced. “With the construction of the new pier I would like to think it can withstand another hurricane but you can never trust Mother Nature,” Brannagan remarks. The remnants of Mother Nature’s hissy fit, along with what was left by humans who enjoyed the beaches this past summer were the focus of an important volunteer effort. On Saturday, October 19, Clean Ocean Action (COA) held its 28th Annual Fall Beach Sweeps at more than 60 locations along the Jersey Shore. Volunteers collected, tallied, and removed harmful and unsightly debris from New Jersey’s coastline, one year after Superstorm Sandy. This year, Beach Sweeps has been folded into COA’s Wave of Action For The Shore program, a monthly volunteer initiative that began in December 2012 to help the people, businesses, habitats and waterways of New York and New Jersey affected by Superstorm Sandy. “Clean Ocean Action is excited to continue to integrate Beach Sweeps into the Waves of Action program, a year-long initiative to recover and restore the NY/NJ coastline after the devastation of Sandy,” commented Catie Tobin, Clean Ocean Action Ocean Advocacy and Education Fellow. “With more than 1,700 volunteers pre-registered for Fall Beach Sweeps, it is evident that taking care of our shores a year after Sandy continues to be a priority,” she added. But that’s just how we roll here in New Jersey, and especially on the Jersey Shore. We can all agree with his inspirational assessment that “We are a heartier lot here in New Jersey.”

A Night With Janis Joplin

The party onstage at the Lyceum Theater, where “A Night With Janis Joplin” recently opened, turns out to be more crowded than you might expect. This latest in Broadway’s endless stream of boomer-bait musical tributes isn’t just a matter of a big-voiced singer, her backup band and a bottle of Southern Comfort. Mary Bridget Davies, whose positively uncanny vocal impersonation of Joplin keeps the house rocking for much of the show’s running time, is joined by a quartet of talented performers playing famous singers who influenced her style, from Bessie Smith to Odetta to Nina Simone to Etta James. Oh, and let’s not forget the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin, who blazes onstage sporting more feathers than the titular star. Perhaps odder still, there are not one but two Janis Joplins present in this celebration of a woman who lived hard and died young. One is the soulful singer who poured her heart, guts and loins into her vocal cords every time she stepped onstage, howling forth her own distinctive blend of rock ’n’ roll and the blues. The other Janis is a friendly and unexpectedly eventempered young woman from Port Arthur, Tex., who offers us an amiable tour of her upbringing, along with thoughtful

reflections about her musical idols. If the Janis who waxes nostalgic while partaking sparingly of the bottle does not quite match our image of the fiercely needy, heedless young woman who sang and partied with reckless abandon, frankly, it’s a bit of a relief. The default setting of biographical shows about performers who lived loose and imploded early often borders on the ghoulish. “A Night With Janis Joplin,” written and directed by Randy Johnson, instead offers a straight-up evening of music, interspersed with anodyne reflections from Janis on life, love and why so many ladies sing the blues. When Ms. Davies is not tempestuously tossing her lightly frizzed hair as she sings “Cry Baby” or “Me and Bobby McGee” or “Ball and Chain,” she cedes the stage to the women portraying the black singers whose styles Joplin borrowed from to create her own potent brew. And so Allison Blackwell drifts along the upper layer of the two-tiered set performing “Summertime” in classical style, cuing Joplin’s highly personalized version of the same song. And De’Adre Aziza swans on to portray the folk singer Odetta, a powerful influence on many of the singersongwriters who emerged along with Joplin in the 1960s, to

perform “Down on Me,” followed once again by Joplin’s own version. Bessie Smith, naturally, makes an appearance, portrayed by Taprena Michelle Augustine. Nikki Kimbrough plays Etta James, and Ms. Blackwell struts as Ms. Franklin. There remains a strange disjunction between the soul-baring singer and the woman calmly telling us that “the blues is just a good woman feelin’ bad,” or “the blues are a way out of where you are, and they can drag you to where you’re going,” or “it’s the want of something that gives you the blues, man.” The Janis we meet in “A Night With Janis Joplin” spends so much time talking about the blues, you begin to wonder when she had time to truly suffer them. As the show draws to a close, Janis becomes less curatorial and a little more introspective. Mr. Johnson drops a few moderately portentous reflections into her casual patter, suggesting the dark fate that is just around the corner.

VOLUNTEER

One who enters into or offers himself for a service of his own free will; to offer voluntarily.

As I read through the editorial drafts of this issue and listened to the interviews conducted by our writers, I could not overlook all that has been accomplished throughout the recovery efforts after the Superstorm by the first responders and volunteers who unselfishly pitched in to help. Throughout virtually every community and within every business affected, workers, local residents and yes, even strangers all rolled up their sleeves to offer assistance. Without fear or concern for their own safety, they cleared rubble, tore down sheetrock and cleared trash to start the rebuilding process. Without the help of literally tens of thousands of these volunteers, the rebuilding efforts would have taken much, much longer.

These people were not looking for compensation, not looking for gratitude, not looking for reward. They saw a need. They saw their fellow neighbors or co-workers in trouble. So, they just pitched in. This spirit is exactly makes our state and its people “Jersey Strong.”

ane Sandy Notificat This spirit of giving freely to assist others is part of the core nature of most people in our region and hopefully throughout our nation. Think of the tremendous power this feeling of giving freely has helped throughout the many catastrophes this country has encountered over just the past few years: floods, droughts, forest fires, etc. Conversely, think of the possible devastating long-lasting effects if this volunteering was not offered.

Interning is a volunteer participation and is an excellent way to give back to the community. As a student leader you are a role model amongst the students who attend our academy. Your job title will include organizing classes, assisting with lesson planning, and assistant directing and teaching. There is plenty of opportunity to work behind the scenes by learning the process of putting a performance together. The process includes running a performance and collaborating costume, set, prop, lighting and music ideas with the various instructors.
