Letter to Our Readers

I’m not sure I should be saying it, but I think Winter is over. If in fact the Spring season is upon us, that can only mean one thing, guy’s and girl’s hearts & minds turn to only one thing…Seasonal Beers! In this issue of Venues NJ, we will try to help educate the novice, and then direct bother the novice and the more experienced beer drinkers to some of the finest biergartens within our state’ where they can enjoy craft, seasonal and a very wide selection of beers to keep your whistles wet. Hope you enjoy. Seeking a casual dining experience? Sit by a cozy fireplace while enjoying your choice of steak, chops, seafood or maybe just one of the best burgers served in the state. You can choose from 19 different style burgers. Then visit The Chapter House in Howell. Read this month’s Restaurant Profile and more. In my travels last month, I came across two women whose music blew me away. They play real Rock & Roll and with such passion, you just can’t stop listening. They play in many local area & regional venues and are very worthwhile catching. Check out Lisa & Wendy in this issue’s Band Profile. Time for a beverage? If you’re down in the Seaside Park area, stop by Bum Rogers and ask Adrienne to pour you a cold beer. She is a seasoned bartender, a Yoga instructor and our Mixologist-of-the-Month. Comedy anyone? This month our own “Dr. of Comedy, Steve O. met up with a comic whose been around for here decades. Known for his skit comedy, Bob Nelson is as funny as he was 30 years ago and his act is clean. Read more in this month’s Comic Relief.

reat food, delicious libations and a warm, friendly atmosphere to enjoy them in has always been the hallmark of The Chapter House bar & grill in

And, the Jaspan family, who took ownership of the restaurant about a year and a half ago, has not changed any of those qualities. In an interview with Tom Jaspan, who owns the restaurant with his brother Paul and his sister Pat Fallon, Tom said that the new owners have made some significant design changes to the eatery, including completely renovating the exterior of the decades old building and gutting and redoing the bar, which now includes a new draft system. A few changes in The Chapter House menu have also taken place, but not many, according to Tom, who serves the restaurant as general manager. The family also owns the Ivy League restaurant in Howell, where Paul and Pat spend much of their time. “We added a few fresh items to The Chapter House menu and took a few away, but basically, the menu remains pretty much the same,” Tom said. The extensive menu offers tempting starters, juicy steaks and burgers, chicken, seafood, hearty sandwiches and healthy salads. The family – owned and operated restaurant, offers a family– oriented atmosphere with seating in two separate dining rooms, which provide a quiet setting for a family meal. The dining rooms, one which offers a fireplace, offers a more relaxed, intimate setting for a romantic date. Seating is also available in the new bar for patrons looking for an afternoon or evening of game watching with friends on the 16 flat screen

65-inch TVs. Enjoy the cozy, casual environment, with its new wooden-style plank floors, high-top tables and bar stools. If sports is your thing, this upbeat bar setting is the place to be at game time when the restaurant offers the MLB package, the NFL package and other TV viewing that sports aficionados will enjoy watching. In addition to a wide variety of libations, The Chapter House stocks 24 beers on draft and over a dozen craft beers on tap. Also soon to be in use is the outdoor dining area where guests may sit, engage in conversation, a round of delicious drinks and enjoy their conversation, meal and drinks under the stars on a warm balmy evening.

T

he Chapter House also offers a fabulous Happy Hour, Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. with food and drink specials, including, $2 domestic drafts, $2.50 well drinks, $3.50 house wines and $5 Margaritas and sangrias.

Patrons may also indulge in the Late Night Happy Hour which runs from 9 p.m. though close, Sunday through Thursday. Those who stop in on Friday, Saturday or Sunday night for dinner will be rewarded with the eatery’s meal specials, such as Prime Rib special. Known for its wonderful appetizers, The Chapter House offers tempting starters, such as

Crab Meltaway, a special blend of crabmeat, mayonnaise, Old Bay seasoning and a three cheese blend, served on toasted French bread or the Bonzai Shrimp starter chosen by patrons which offers jumbo shrimp, lightly coated and fried, served with house made tangy chili sauce. Also on the list is Maryland Hot Crab Dip, a special blend of cream cheese, lump crab meat, onions and spices, served with baked sliced French bread. Salads are plentiful here. Try the Pecan Chicken Salad, pecan encrusted chicken, sliced over spring mixed greens craisins, celery, shredded carrots and mandarin oranges, topped with Chow Mein noodles with sesame dressing or the Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna with romaine and iceberg lettuce, red onion, carrots, cucumbers, tomato, Chow Mein noodles and sesame dressing. This restaurant is also known for its delicious, juicy burgers and offers a menu that includes the Chipotle Burger, topped with jalapenos and the Chapter House Burger, a flame grilled burger with sautéed onions and mushrooms.

LISA and WENDY Can you imagine being a true rock chick, playing in a local band, and then actually playing onstage with the legendary Heart? Well, it happened for our own Lisa and Wendy -- Lisa Barone and Wendy Horn. Lisa and Wendy met in 2004 in the all-female band Broad Banned and have been playing as an acoustic duo since 2008. Both self-taught artists, Lisa showcases her talent playing the guitar and drums and Wendy provides the vocals. Originally the drummer for Broad Banned, Lisa switched to guitar when they had trouble finding a permanent lead guitarist and in 2004 Wendy joined as the vocalist. After a fouryear run as a band, the group ran its course and Lisa and Wendy were the only two remaining still willing to go out and perform. While they play mostly as a duo, they still occasionally team up with other musicians for bigger corporate events and weddings. That’s when Lisa moves back to drums and they are typically joined by Larry Haber and Gary Conte. They bring the full band together about once a month, but they would both be interested in doing that a little more. “It’s not that playing acoustically isn’t great, but once in a while you want to rock out in a full band,” said Lisa, adding that this full arrangement would enable her to play drums more frequently. While they both enjoy playing with a full band, they do have a little more freedom when it’s just the two of them. “The duo is more intimate and it definitely lends itself to being a little more loose and creative,” said Wendy. “The band is more structured. We don’t play

often enough to get too loose and it’s usually a corporate or wedding event so it’s pretty structured.” Lisa has been heavily influenced by Heart, a 2013 inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame headed up by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. Then last summer Lisa and Wendy were given the opportunity of a lifetime -- they actually played three shows with the world-renowned band, one at the PNC Art Center in Holmdel, one at Bethel Woods at the site of the original Woodstock show and one more in Toronto where they helped serve as part of the choir for Heart when they played “Stairway to Heaven” with Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience. “That was the most memorable thing I’ve ever done because they’ve inspired me so much and it was amazing,” Lisa related. “It was a big family vibe and they were very grateful they had a choir.” Lisa and Wendy are hoping to perform with Heart once again. “I won’t say never because I know that tour did so well,” said Lisa. “We keep in touch with them and always tell them we’re available.” Aside from Heart, Lisa also looked up to Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood. Wendy was always a fan of anything with strong vocals, citing Journey, Boston and Kansas as her biggest inspirations. Lisa and Wendy are kept busy with their schedule as they play several shows every week. They can often be found at all of the different MJ’s locations across Monmouth County and take their talent down to Seaside, Manasquan and Asbury Park quite regularly too. They perform everything from classics like Aretha Franklin and Led Zeppelin to the popular tracks currently on the

radio. If the venue calls for all country or all soft rock, they can appropriately accommodate such requests thanks to their large song selection and ability to read a room. “We’ll go up there with the song list in front of us and then look at the room and say let’s stick to more of this genre,” said Lisa. Having been playing together and forming a strong friendship for the past decade, it’s unlikely to see one performing without the other anytime soon. “It’s definitely exciting; it’s a lot of fun -- I love playing with Lisa,” said Wendy. “Even if I got an offer for a band, even touring bands, I’d say that I have this chick who’s awesome. I wouldn’t really want to be anywhere unless Lisa was involved in it.” For performance dates, music samples and contact information check out LisaWendyRock.com or you can “like” them on Facebook at Facebook.com/ LisaandWendy.

Adrienne Kengetter by CLARE MARIE CELANO

Adrienne Kengetter has managed to balance her busy life by combining her two passions: working as a bartender and pursuing a career in the practice of yoga and holistic health. The veteran bartender has tended bar in various venues including, night clubs, golf courses and sports bars for ten years. She currently acts as bar keep at Bum Rogers Tavern and Crabhouse in Seaside Park. While working as a bartender this ambitious woman also managed to attend Ocean County College in Toms River, in pursuit of a degree in science. White attending college she developed a deep interest in the practice of yoga and came to the decision to pursue a more natural lifestyle, incorporating organic foods, and a holistic approach to health. In tandem with that decision, Kengetter then left Ocean County College and enrolled in a 200-hour program at the American Yoga Academy in

Craft Beers 101 ibations Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Sierra Nevada has been round since 1980. It’s one of the original breweries of the craft movement, and its founder, Ken Grossman, is one of the original craft beer celebrities. The Pale Ale was the first beer brewed by Sierra Nevada back in that fateful year, and has since been the model pale ale for the industry. It’s one of, if not the beer, that began the craft beer revolution and it still stands today as one of the best beers in the world. You can’t call yourself a craft beer fan until you’ve had the beer that started it all.

hen you’re new to the craft beer world, things seem a bit overwhelming. Walk into a store with even just a decent craft selection, and you might find it hard to decide what to get. If you have a store that offers single bottles or mix-and-match 6-packs, it’s even more difficult. What kind of beer should you get? Which brewery is best?

Dogfish 60 Minute IPA Dogfish Head may not be as old as Sierra Nevada, having “only” begun in 1995, but its place in the craft beer Hall of Fame is still rightfully earned. Dogfish was started by Sam Calagione as a brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Having such a small brewing system meant a lot of work for Sam - he had to brew three times a day to keep up with demand until the brewpub was finally expanded to a production brewery.

her pursuit of a natural lifestyle and enrolled in a program in the Academy of Natural Health Sciences in Woodbridge, to study herbalism and holistic health continuing on her journey to a more natural life. She also wanted to pursue her ultimate goal of having her own yoga studio someday. Although she enjoys instructing her students in various forms of yoga, including, Bikram and Hatha, Kengetter says that Vinyasa is her favorite form of yoga and therefore, the form she loves to teach the most. “It’s a flowing form of yoga with very fluid movements and breathing,’ she said. “It’s very graceful and the moves are like dance moves.” Her yoga practice balances her life, and allows her to enjoy the fast-pace of her bartending job. “Yoga balances me and brings me back to center,” she explained. “It also relaxes me and helps me to focus.” Kengetter teaches both private classes and online classes at All You Can Yoga. And as she instructs students and works her shifts as bartender at Bum Rogers, she admits she is extremely busy but has no intention of changing things. She says bartending allows for fun, social interaction and enjoyment and her yoga allows for relaxation and focus. Her plan is to ultimately open a yoga studio that offers various services, such as herbalism and massage, in addition to various forms of yoga.

This isn’t an overview of the various beer styles or the thousands of breweries. Rather, it’s a select few beers that you need to try before you can call yourself a really craft beer fan. Please note, though, that this list doesn’t include beers that aren’t widely available, especially in New Jersey.

Carton Boat Beer Carton, a regional brewery based out of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, is making a name for itself by brewing common styles with unique twists. The growth it’s seen since its inception in 2010 goes to show how much New Jersey and East Coast craft beer fans alike have come to embrace what they’re doing. Carton is credited with brewing one of the original Session IPAs, a beer somewhere between a Pale Ale and an IPA, called Boat Beer. As founder Augie Carton will tell you, it’s brewed with the goal being sessionable (being able to drink a lot of it), while giving you new tastes with every new pint so you never get bored. Carton is available on draft throughout New Jersey, and limited Boat Beer cans are available in select stores.

Ommegang Three Philosophers Even non-craft fans may have heard of Ommegang lately for their Game of Thrones series of beers (Iron Throne, Take Black Stout). Brewery Ommegang has been brewing world-class Belgian-inspired ales in Cooperstown, New York for 15 years. Ommegang’s impressive portfolio of beers means that every experienced craft beer fan will recommend something different.

ell, it’s not really like that -- but it’s close. “Beer Garden” is the American vernacular for Biergarten, in German. According to brewyorknewyork. com, “By definition, a beer garden is an open-air space where beer and food are served. The concept actually originated as Bavarian breweries planted gardens above cellars to keep their lagers cool enough to ferment underground. Many clever breweries turned these spaces into outdoor spaces with communal seating that serve beer and traditional food. Just because a bar has a German theme and serves German beer doesn’t make it a beer garden. There is no such thing as an indoor beer garden.”

beer garden. Serves both popular brands and microbrews, as well as non-beer cocktails.

Coming Soon… Expect More Microbrews and BrewPubs! More microbreweries have sprung up and are in the works to open in New Jersey thanks to a significant law change. And, many will also have authentic beer gardens. According to NJbeer.org, “Thanks to a 2012 law change, microbreweries are now allowed to sell up to 1/2 keg (or approximately six cases) of beer for consumption off premise. Also, as part of a brewery tour, consumers are allowed to purchase beer for consumption on premise. Breweries are not allowed to operate a restaurant or sell food. This is an opportunity for people to enhance their educational tour experience with an on-site tasting. Because we value our relationships with our restaurant and tavern partners, the law was purposely designed to not allow breweries to operate like a bar or restaurant.” Brewpubs, the organization explains, are considered “restaurants that produce small batches of craft brewed on site and may sell their own beers by the glass for drinking on premise. They may also sell their beer for carry-out in bottles, “growlers” and in kegs. The new law allows brewpubs for the first time to sell their beer off the premises to licensed retailers throughout the state through a New Jersey beer wholesaler.” As an example, Red Bank’s popular Basil T’s is a brewpub. Because of these wider opportunities provided by direct sales, at least 15 new breweries are expected to open by this summer, and more are being planned. It is a terrific time to be a craft beer enthusiast in New Jersey! In South Jersey (Courtesy of “Joe Sixpack” aka Don Russell, director of Philly Beer Week. For his newsletter, email him at joesixpack.net.) Glasstown Brewing (Millville) Opened this past January, this brewery will start by offering German wheat beer, American stout, India and American pale ales, California red ale and amber ale. Purchase on site or in local bars/pubs. Garden State Beer (Egg Harbor City) Soon to open, this brewery will feature a tasting room. What will be available are: copper ale, IPA (a British ale), Nut Brown Ale, Egg Harbor Ale, and a couple of fruit beers -- American Wheat (peach, blueberry or raspberry), and seasonal Pumpkin Ale. According to Joe Sixpack, brewer Shawn Grigus promises, “easier-drinking ales and lagers in the 4.5 to 6 percent range, plus a rotating tap of special stuff.”

Spellbound Brewing (Mount Holly) This 20-barrel brewhouse will also feature a 1,000-square-foot tasting room. Initially, it provides Spellbound IPA, Porter, and seasonals such as Saison, in kegs and cans. In addition, the brewers will be appearing at festivals and charity events throughout New Jersey. Village Idiot Brewing Co. (Mount Holly) According to its website, this unique microbrewery “is a 1.5 BBL (46.5 gallons) artisanal, small-batch, neighborhood business brewing quality beer for good people who appreciate good beer. We offer samples, pints, and growler fills.” Others set to open throughout New Jersey this year are: Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing, Cherry Hill; Rinn Duin, Toms River; 902 Brewing, Hudson County; Asbury Park Brewing Company, Asbury Park Community Brewery, Bulkhead Brewing Company, Ocean County; Departed Soles Brewery, location not decided; Hoboken Brewing Company; Little Dog Brewing, Neptune City; Lunacy Brewing, Magnolia; Miscin Brewing, Lafayette; and Stibinger Brothers Beer, Sparta. The East Coast Beer Co., which debuted in Point Pleasant in 2007, will now call Main Street in Belmar home in only a few short months. Its initial launch, Beach Haus American Pilsner was in 2010. To date, brewers John Merklin and Brian Ciriaco now also offer Beach Haus Winter Rental, a dark lager; Beach Haus Kick Back, an American amber ale; and the India Pale Ale Beach Haus Cruiser IPA. Merklin hints that his brewery plans on doing a beer for Belmar. Also, stop in at Carton Brewing, Atlantic Highlands, to taste its new small-batch beer, GORP, and fill up your growlers. The beer, just released on March 17, and what it stands for is described by the brewers, as follows: Founders “Chris and Augie grew up as neighbors next to the hiking trails of Hartshorne Woods Park. Back then, trail mix was called GORP, standing for Good Old Raisins and Peanuts, which described it perfectly. Familiar and dependable, GORP trail mix was a combination of clean and complimentary flavors appropriate for being out on the trails. With GORP beer, we evoke recollections of fun and flavors of the trails by adding peanuts and chocolate to a robust porter base that is then fermented on black raisins. Drink GORP because it is fun to take the mix off the trail.” For much more NJ beer news, visit newjerseycraftbeer.com, njbeer.org, njbeerevents.com, and joesixpack.net

R O A D W A Y A Review

When Othe sides N of beefBdescend R from O theAproduct D of W Y the ’70s:A Apollo rafters, in the meat locker where Rocky Balboa Creed, the showboating heavyweight champ, will soon be training for his big championship was a satirical version of Muhammad Ali, and fight, there’s a happy buzz of recognition. Stallone’s inspiration was to match him against When Rocky cracks raw eggs into a glass and a working-class grinder with no retinue, no gulps them down, the audience cheers. When, media savvy and no aspirations other than to after a fevered month of training, he climbs the go 15 rounds without getting murdered. The last step of the Philadelphia Museum of Art showhorse versus the plowhorse, Hollywood and punches the sky, the theater goes wild. versus middle America — the perfect allegory Rocky, the new Broadway musical that has for America’s Bicentennial year. just opened at the Winter Garden Theatre, On Broadway, Tom Meehan’s script earns a lot of goodwill the easy way — by follows the movie faithfully. I was impressed reproducing famous scenes from the 1976 with how carefully director Alex Timbers Sylvester Stallone film on which it is based. But builds the relationship between Rocky and the show does more difficult things well, too. It his mousy girlfriend Adrian. The wooing — breathes fresh life into a movie franchise that from the pet shop where she works, to the ice long ago descended into camp; puts singing skating rink where he takes her on a first date, boxers onstage without drawing snickers; and to his grungy apartment, where he gets her to turns an unlikely film property into a Broadway take off her glasses — is actually well staged musical with both spectacle and heart. Rocky and quite emotional. the musical is no loser. It lands. The cast is almost perfect. Andy Karl, a Let’s start with the original 1976 film, written hunky Broadway journeyman, captures the by and starring a then-unknown Stallone, was shambling Stallone walk and just enough of a good, gritty little film, with some real street his slack-jawed, street-hood voice without authenticity, an affecting love story and an turning into parody. Margo Seibert, as Adrian, irresistible underdog hero. It’s unmistakably a pairs well with him and sings beautifully;

veteran character actor Dakin Matthews is a superbly crotchety Mickey, the old-timer who becomes Rocky’s manager; and Terrence Archie, with his shaved head and Mr. Universe body, is a charismatic Apollo Creed. The show cheats a bit by supplementing some new songs with excerpts from the famous Bill Conti Rocky theme music and Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” from Rocky III. But it’s hard to complain. Timbers uses them to accent the galvanizing training scenes, staged with video backdrops of the Philadelphia streets, sweatshirted doppelgangers of Rocky and Karl himself doing some slick jump-roping and the best running in place on Broadway. The big championship bout gives you everything you want in a splashy stage climax and more. The ring is rolled out into the audience, as patrons in the first few rows are reseated in bleachers

onstage. The punches come fast and furious, the blood and sputum fly, time is compressed or speeded up or stretched out with cinematic stop-action effects, as announcers on giant TV screens overhead call the action breathlessly. It builds to a rousing finale, abrupt yet so satisfying that you hardly realize this is a rare musical that doesn’t end with a song. Rocky was always an unorthodox fighter — but in his first Broadway bout, he takes the punishment and gets the job done.

A gathering place for Irish tradition and family fun!

AGREEMENT

Fact of agreeing; harmony of opinion, action or character. A contract duly executed and legally binding.

In today’s business world, it seems that the only way to get anything done or the only way to get people to agree to anything is to “put in writing”. Our legalistic society has eroded the trust people use to have in each other.

ESTORE… HELP WA Remember when the phrases “my word is my bond: or “with a hand-shake” meant something? That’s the way business was conducted, at least small business. And most people lived up to their word. For the most part, those days are gone With the business pressures of today, combined with the poor economic conditions the lack of trust has increased. Everyone feels they have to protect themselves (“CYA”). This is further demanded due to some who have no regard as to what they say or what they verbally agree to, or even agree to in writing. They will say or do whatever it takes to get what they want, with no intent to stand by their word.

This year’s Relay For Life theme is... BRIDGE TO A CURE!!

In the fight against cancer, silence is the last thing we need. Relay For Life of Manahawkin is a great place to take action and make noise. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement symbolizes hope and our shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people we love. If cancer has touched your life, participating in Relay For Life of Manahawkin is a great way to take action and help finish the fight. This is your opportunity to honor cancer survivors, remember those we have lost, and raise funds and awareness to fight back and help end cancer forever.

cane Sandy Notificat It’s unfortunate it’s come to this. Personally I’d rather go back to the day when business was done on a hand-shake and a man’s word was his bond. I’m not saying written contracts aren’t necessary; they are in certain business situations. But let’s all try a little more trusting in each other. And the way to start? Each of us should honor our own word, and maybe, the next guy will too.
