It’s quite unbelievable that summer is almost over. The only time of the year when I count the days to move quickly, it’s not much longer before leaves change, rustling in a refreshing breeze, and the sounds of marching bands feel the air on Friday nights and Saturdays. Fall isn’t far away, but we still have a few more weeks to get through. Since we do have a few more weeks of averaging 90 degree days, we have a couple of features this month to help beat the heat. First, the Pine Belt Women’s Expo is quickly approaching. Women are invited to enjoy shopping, learning, laughing, and visiting with each other. We’re proud to be a Gold Sponsor of this year’s Expo, so be sure to look for our booth. We may even have some surprises in store for you! The event is indoors, so visitors won’t be too hot.

The other feature as a suggestion to enjoy before the end of summer is a day or two on the Leaf River. This fantastic natural waterway is perfect for canoeing or kayaking, camping and spending some time with family or friends. Besides our summer events, don’t miss the other great stories we have this month! There is something for everyone. Plus, please don’t forget to tell our advertisers “thank you” for allowing us to offer Venture South to you every month! Starting next month, our subscribers will start getting some bonus materials occasionally. Be on the lookout in September and following months for a tourism map of Biloxi; a city guide for Lucedale and George County; a city guide for Wiggins and Stone County; and a city guide for Magee, Mendenhall and Simpson County. We’ll be getting these out very soon! Thank you to these communities for allowing us to work on these projects for you! We’ll be adding more towns, counties and regions soon, and advertisers will always get their own copies. If you’d like to subscribe, just email jason@myventuresouth.com or call (601) 909-0990. It’s only $30 per year, and that’s gets a copy delivered to your home or business every month! Jason Niblett is the publisher of Venture South Magazine. He may be reached at jason@myventuresouth.com

O

n a recent morning I woke up extra early, excited about the day that was before me. I was preparing for an overnight stay in Greenwood, ready to mark a few things off my bucket list. It was my birthday, and I was thrilled. With many calls and texts of birthday wishes and many things not going as planned, I was running behind and, with the three-and-a-half-hour drive ahead, I was stressing I wouldn’t make it in time for the evening plans. I arrived in the historical downtown area of Greenwood where I noticed many buildings had been restored. I gave a big sigh of relief when I saw the restored hotel where I had reservations. I was staying at The Alluvian Hotel which was originally built in 1917 and was named the “Irving Hotel.” At the time it had the reputation of being one of the finest hotels in the state of Mississippi. It’s still one of the finest places I’ve visited. After stopping in front of the hotel, I got out and walked to the back of my car to get my bags when a very nice gentleman came from inside the hotel to offer his

assistance. As I accepted with great appreciation, I still had that feeling of stress and the question of am I going to get checked on time. After he started inside I realized I didn’t have my wallet in my purse. I again started panicking when he assured me I still had time and that he would get my things inside as I looked, and he would be more than glad to park my car inside their parking area. To my relief I found where I had laid my wallet. Once I entered the gorgeous lobby, I was welcomed by two smiling ladies standing behind the front desk. They let me know I was in good hands. The checkin went quickly and, with the assistance from the same gentleman, I was on my way to my room. After taking my things from the cart, I was shown were everything was located. As I sat in the chair collecting my thoughts, I heard a doorbell and, once I realized it was at my door, I opened the door. It was housekeeping asking if I would like my bed to be turned down for the night. I went back down to the lobby where I was greeted by Helen Gwin who is over marketing and at The Alluvian. She was able to give me a quick tour around before walking me across the street for the evening plans. I was about to attend a cooking class at the Viking Cooking School as this had been on my bucket list ever since I had learned about the school after an editorial that had ran many years ago in a local paper. One of the local ladies was a chef and instructor with them at the time. So, I started dreaming of the day I could attend one of their classes. Helen introduced me to the ladies at the counter of the retail store and to Mary Lee, one of the instructors for the night. As we were talking, I found out Mary Lee was from my hometown of Yazoo City.

The time had arrived for the class to begin and, as we walked into the large kitchen/classroom, I believed the excitement I felt was like a child on Christmas morning. I was walking into what many cooks dream of: preparing a meal on Viking appliances. As I stood around meeting others that were also taking the class with me, it was time to begin and we were introduced to the other instructor Kenny. There were 12 “students” and we divided into groups of four. On that night there was a ladies church group of four ladies from Arkansas. There was also a mother and daughter that was there for the daughter’s early birthday weekend. The mother, Melissa, is from Brookhaven and the daughter is from Baton Rouge and to round off their group was a sweet newlywed couple, Jessica and Mark from Tupelo. Mark and his family own a catering service. In my group there was a mother and her 13-year-old son, Brenton, and then Annette’s sister, Betty, from Carthage. Annette is the owner of a Southern Soul restaurant. As young as Brenton is, they were there for him just the same as he wants to start his own You Tube cooking program. As we began our class, “Southern Specialties” from the hit movie “The Help,” we were each given a Viking apron to wear and keep, a booklet with the recipes we were to prepare with a few extras that were pre-prepared and a couple of bonus recipes. On the menus were foods such as Southern Fried Chicken, Homemade Mac n’ Cheese, Slow Cooked Southern Greens, Skillet Cornbread, Shirley’s Feather Light Biscuits. Throughout the night we would gather around our workstations and provided instructions of proper

ways to prepare each dish with a few extra tips. After all our dishes were completed we all fixed our own plates and sat down at a long table to enjoy our work and enjoy friendly conversations about what we had just learned. After we had eaten and enjoyed our work, Mary Lee and Kenny started serving each person a slice of Minny’s Chocolate Pie (OH, I did inquire if an ingredient was omitted). Since I was enjoying the conversation with some of my classmates, it took me a moment to notice everyone except the lady to my right and myself had been served. Then to both of our surprise, Mary Lee and Kenny came back to the table with two slices of pie with each having a lit candle and everyone singing “Happy Birthday” to us. This just topped the night off since I was by myself. After the class, we were given the opportunity make purchases out of the retail store with a discount for attending the class. I certainly came home with a few kitchen toys. After the class and shopping, I returned back to my room where I enjoyed sitting back, relaxing, and thinking about what I just got to experience. This was one of the best birthdays I have had! The next morning, I got up and went up to “The Terrace Room” where a beautiful Southern Buffet Breakfast

myventuresouth.com Q 19

was found. Guests had the choice of eggs, bacon, sausage, grits,a frittata, biscuits, blueberry scones and fresh fruit. I’m here to tell you it was just as delicious as it looked. After enjoying my breakfast, I walked out onto the terrace and enjoyed the view that overlooked the street between the hotel and the cooking school. This was an addition to the hotel when it went through the restorations. After I checked out I had the pleasure of meeting Kimberly Gnemi, the general manager of the Viking Cooking School. As we were chatting, I asked Kimberly about the building that now houses the cooking school, the retail store and The Alluvain Spa. She told me it was once a J.C. Penny. As we continued talking I found out she is from Greenwood and started working with Viking right out of school. She mentioned she loves working with Viking and being able to stay in her hometown. Once we finished, I went up to the Spa and was given a short tour since most of the rooms were occupied with clients. I decided to treat myself with a manicure and pedicure. That was so relaxing as I sat there being pampered while enjoying a glass of coconut infused water. The Spa offers many different services such many different massage therapies for one person or couples. One can get a facial as well as a “cosmetic solution” by Mississippi make-up artist Amy Head. Amy also has her own cosmetic line that is offered for purchase. Guests – women or men - may like to choose other spa services or grooming. The atmosphere is so calming and peacefully you will not want to leave. As I was going back through the lobby, I met a couple from Hot Springs, Arkansas, relaxing before walking over to the cooking school for their class which was different than the one I had attended. As I continued to my car, I walked through the beautiful courtyard. I honestly hated to leave. I was able to return a few weeks later to spend the afternoon with Helen since she wasn’t able to give me the grand tour before. This was perfect since we were able to talk as she showed me around. She explained about the art work that is displayed throughout the hotel antd spa and how it’s all done by Mississippi artist. As we were touring the property, Helen also explained the name “Alluvian” came from the area’s alluvial soil that has been deposited by centuries of river floods. “As lore would have it, Tennessee Williams once referred to the people living on the land as ‘Alluvias.’” I could hear the enthusiasm in her voice, a sign of

someone happy and passionate about their job. She has worked for the complex a year, and she is from Greenwood. We continued our tour to the fitness center and then to The Terrance Room which is also serves as a Southern library and the complimentary breakfast area. There is a fireplace and sitting area where one can also choose from serval books, music and films that can be viewed on the television that’s over the mantel over the fireplace. Then we continued to one of the Terrance Suites. We went back down to the first floor and went through the lounge where on Thursday nights from 5 until 7:30 p.m. they offer happy hour. Also on the first floor is Giardina’s Restaurant. We continued over to the spa and this time I was able to investigate several of the rooms I wasn’t able to see the previous visit. The private couple’s suite has a fireplace, a river bath for two, duel tables and a custom double super shower. There’s also a room that offers the rain dance (Vichy Nirvana) where guests can get a sugar scrub and then raised off by a Vichy Shower followed by a hydrated sweet tea wrap and a Hungarian facial and body massages. The wonderful people and equally fantastic hotel, spa, cooking school and other facilities were simply amazing for my birthday.

owntown Laurel has had a major resurgence in the last 10 years with retail shops, restaurants, business firms, and family events. In March 2017, a new, unique business was added to the growing area. The Cotton Boll, located on Magnolia Street, is owned by Kelly and Zane Lambert, two transplants from Arkansas and Florida that ended up in Laurel approximately 30 years ago. “Zane is a pilot and came here to fly for Richard Headrick, owner of Headrick Sign Company,” says Kelly. “He then flew charter, and Sanderson Farms was the charter company’s biggest client. When Sanderson bought their own plane, they hired Zane to be their pilot. He’s been there ever since.” The Lamberts raised three children in Laurel: Calen, Hayden, and Madeleine. Now the children are grown. Calen is a captain in the U.S. Army serving stateside with a wife and two children; Hayden lives in Jackson and is a graphic artist; and Madeleine is a student at Jones College. Kelly wanted something to do now that her children were grown, and she had always loved retail after working in a big department store in college. “I saw the space being renovated in Downtown Laurel, and I realized I wanted to have a store there,” she says. “It was such a pretty building with beautiful floors. Some of the businesses in Downtown Laurel are so pretty. I knew someone would put a store there if I didn’t.” The Cotton Boll’s staple items include home décor and goods; leather goods; sleepwear; and children’s items. “We try not to carry anything other local stores sell. There may be some overlap, but we try to not let that happen.” One of the biggest selling items is Bridgewater Candles. The Cotton Boll is the only business in Jones County that carries the candles. “They sell like crazy, especially the Sweet Grace scent,” says Kelly.

Besides trying not to carry items other local stores have, Kelly considers three factors when choosing items for the store. “I want what we carry to be high quality. I always look at the price point, because I want people to be able to afford what we carry. And I ask myself if it’s something I would buy,” she said. Customers appreciate the thought she puts into what goes into the store. “One of my new favorite go-to shops in Downtown Laurel! This store is curated so well,” says a Facebook review from Amanda Meadows. Even shoppers from other parts of the continent are impressed. “I went back home to Canada with a bag full of goodies from this store!” says Tiffany Stone in a Facebook review. In addition to carrying the best of products, Kelly wants everyone that comes in to feel welcome. “I want all shoppers to feel like they are home,” she said. She and her four employees have received many complements on their customer service. “My husband and I visited this shop today, and while the inventory here is wonderful, the best part was visiting with the owner, Kelly, and her shopkeeper! We feel like we made new friends today,” says Jane Miller from Tennessee. “I LOVE the Cotton Boll! All of the employees are so kind and helpful,” says Kelly Rowell of Laurel. The Cotton Boll is located at 735 N. Magnolia Street in Suite B in Downtown Laurel. They are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. One can visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/shopthecottonboll.laurel or follow them on Instagram at thecottonboll.

RELAXING DAYS AT THE Story & photographs by Hilda Hellwig

ohn Schneider: actor, country singer, producer, and director; nine music albums; one greatest hits package; and 18 singles. Not to mention, he’s still known for his starring roll as Bo Duke on “The Dukes of Hazzard.” He currently plays a judge on “The Have and Have Nots,” and formerly played in “Smallville.” Now, add weekend retreat and studio owner to the list. A recent beautiful, bright, blue skies kind of day led to the Louisiana retreat. Driving along Interstate 55, there were questions of how relaxing of a visit it would be? How friendly would the staff be to guests? Driving to the gate at the front entrance of John Schneider Studios, there were butterflies, but all that changed when the newcomers were greeted by the bodyguard, Eddie, who directed the guests up to the main house, known as “The River House.” (THE RIVER HOUSE). It was here guests met Alicia, John’s producer, and then John himself. Both were so welcoming and friendly. Alicia made lunch as the group sat down to talk about the John Schneider Studios. If one is looking for a quite unique, but relaxing place to go, this is a must do! The Studio sits on 120 acres of which 58 acres is accessible. On the property are several lakes, the Tickfaw River, a swamp, a bamboo forest, two sound stages, wardrobe facilities, two editing studios, film sets (a bar set, a diner set, a motel set, and a barn where musicals and concerts are performed), a huge pool, a gym, three cabins which are called Itsy Bitsies (beautifully decorated with one bedroom, living room, kitchen, and dining room) with fire pits in the backyard to sit by at night and talk or maybe even make some s’mores. One has nature trails to explore or a group can play baseball on the baseball field, or one can relax and go fishing. The staff is absolutely wonderful! There were even hummingbirds gathering nectar from the flowers during the day! It’s the perfect

place for family reunions, weddings and is a photographer’s dream. The River House, built in 1910, has two bedrooms, a huge dining room and a theater/screening room with a popcorn machine, a parlor and a great big kitchen. One can rent the whole house or either one of the two bedrooms. There is a huge firepit in back surrounded by rocking chairs and a hammock to lounge. By the end of the year, they will complete two more cabin Itsy Bitsies on the property. When John is not on tour or recording, and if he is on his property, one will see him working or relaxing on the grounds. There are also campsites with limited dry camping, tent spaces and hook-ups. Guests will also enjoy the beautiful nighttime skies, complete with fireflies. John said the people of the Holden community and the State of Louisiana are happy and welcoming to the filmmakers. It is often very expensive to make movies, so when filmmakers come to John Schneider Studios, it is a one stop spot to film. Everything is there to help empower the independent filmmakers from a place to stay to all the equipment, and especially the scenery. The cost to make a movie or music video is not as expensive in a place such as this. In 2016, Holden was hit with “100-year floods.” John and the residents of Holden all worked together to help each other. John had a great deal of damage. The River House was under four feet of water and he lost a lot of memorabilia and equipment, especially everything his mom collected of her son’s career. But, these were only things and life does go on. Out of that turmoil, John came out a stronger person and put so much feeling into his songs, thus, came his CD “Ruffled Skirts” and the upcoming CD “The Odyssey,” a journey of 52 songs - one song, one video and one documentary per week. John Schneider has a busy life, but when he can find the time, he loves to play golf. He has not played in a long time since he has been on the road recording, promoting his songs and playing on “The Have and Have Nots.” John is a country guy all the way, and he loves life. He thinks alot like me about life. “Everyone should enjoy life, take one big bite and do not let someone else put their limitations on you. I was put here on earth to tell stories thru music and entertain,” he said.

28 Q Venture South Magazine

“I CANNOT WAIT TO GO BACK!”

His mentors were his mother, his dad, Denver Pyle from the “Dukes of Hazzard” and his music teacher. With all John has been through, he said he would not do anything differently because life is a learning experience. His greatest feelings come from watching the reaction on people’s faces to one of his films he has made. When people laugh, cry or gasp all at the right moments, he knows he has done a great job. Also, when he does appearances and the audience starts singing along to the lyrics from his “Odyssey” album, he said that it’s a great feeling to know his fans are familiar with his brand new songs. Next for John Schneider, he would like to fill 20,000 seat venues. John, the man I met will fill more seats than that! I am so excited for John Schneider and the direction that his career will be going in. There is nothing but great times ahead for John and Alicia. Thank you both for your hospitality. I cannot wait to go back!

TO MISSISSIPPI’S CRAFT BREWERIES Story & photographs by Sandra Buckley

ississippi is known the world over for its rich culture and hospitality. And now, the Magnolia State is also making its mark as a destination for visiting craft breweries. “It’s an extremely exciting time to be in the brewing industry in Mississippi,” says Matthew McLaughlin, president of the Mississippi Brewers Guild. “And, with the proliferation of different styles of beers and each brewery’s interpretation of those styles, it’s also a great time to be a craft beer enthusiast.” The Mississippi Brewers Guild, which is the state’s trade association that represents the licensed brewing industry, is actively working in support of these small businesses who are serving up more than a refreshing “cold one.”

36 Q Venture South Magazine

“Opening breweries has allowed for job growth and has boosted the local and state economy,” explains Matthew. “They also give restaurants and bars local products to sell. Plus, these brewers are actively and generously involved in their communities and help in philanthropic ways such as hosting or participating in fundraising opportunities for various local organizations.” “The craft beverage industry, likewise, counts on the support of Mississippians and out-of-state visitors to grow,” adds Charlene Williams, marketing coordinator for the Mississippi Brewers Guild. Thanks to the notable growth and success the state’s craft beverage industry is experiencing, it has positioned Mississippi as a budding travel destination for

craft beer enthusiasts from across the globe. “Mississippi breweries are a great reason for tourists to visit our state,” says Matthew. “It would be easy to spend two or three days travelling the state and visiting them.” In fact, it was only recently that patrons have been permitted to purchase drinks onsite at a brewery, which is now creating a tremendous new platform for tourism. The Mississippi Brewers Guild championed the passage of this legislation now allowing breweries to sell directly to the consumer from their taprooms. This not only opens up a new source of revenue for the breweries but this also provides consumers with the unique opportunity to engage onsite with the brewers. In addition to leading pro-business legislation, the Mississippi Brewers Guild also supports its members in a number of other ways, from holding statewide conferences to hosting craft beer dinners at local restaurants. “We have also planned our first festival, the Soggy Sweat Craft Beer and BBQ Festival, in Jackson this fall,” says Charlene. “And, this fall and into next year, we will be hosting Guild Nights at retail establishments and our member breweries across the state.” Spanning the state are devoted, talented brewers who invite locals and tourists to visit their breweries, enjoy a one-of-a-kind craft beer, and learn more about their brews and their journeys. “I am passionate about this industry because I see how much hard work, energy, time, and effort these business owners have put into their craft,” adds Charlene. “It is so important to continue to support them. These are hard-working Mississippians following their passions and who are bringing a product to our area that is no doubt on par with anything else in the national market.”

What’s on tap next for Mississippi’s craft beverage industry? “With the fast-paced growth of the smaller, micro-breweries and brewpubs, coupled with the manufacturing side of the industry supporting a shift from regionalization to hyper-localization,” adds Matthew, “I believe growth in Mississippi and the Southeastern United States will outpace other areas of the country.”
