Less female directors, more stories about women

Women in Venice 78. More than ever. Even if, at first sight, figures describe a step back. The Artistic Director Alberto Barbera underlined that the decrease of female directors in this 78th edition (eight last year, five this year) is due to a “residual decrease in the total percentage of the selected movies” and it could be a “random fluctuation” that also “confirms, as we already thought, that the long period of productive slowdown impacted more on the female side of the cinematic industry”. In short terms, Covid penalized the most vulnerable parts. What matters are key roles. The jury of the official competition includes Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, Virginie Efira, Cynthia Erivo, Sarah Gadon. There are many female characters and stories told in original, problematic and imaginative ways. This year’s program is rich and diverse, thanks to the imagination of directors of both sexes. Starting from the opening film Madres paralelas. Pedro Almodovar describes the cohabitation and the mutual understanding of Janis (Penélope Cruz) and Ana (Milena Smit), both facing an unexpecting pregnancy. Ana Lily Amirpour’s Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon is a fantasy epic about a young woman with paranormal skills (Kate Hudson) who escaped from a mental institution. L’événement by Audrey Diwan tells the story of Anne (Anamaria Vartolomei), who decides to fight the law to have an abortion when was still an illegal practice in France . Maggie Gyllenhaal’s first feature The Lost Daughter is based upon the novel by Elena Ferrante and tells the story of Leda, a middle-aged who enjoys the taste of freedom during a holiday on the Italian seaside. Among the great coming back directors, there’s Pablo Larraín with Spencer, the story of Lady D played by Kristen Stewart embodies the iconic princess when she decided to split from the royal family. Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog is based on the novel by Thomas Savage. The New Zealand director paints a fresco of machismo and abuse starting from the despotic farmer Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch). Barbera highlighted the importance of two movies. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel is set in the Medieval age and tells the chronicle of a trial for rape from three different points of view: the husband, the woman and the rapist. The other one is Les choses humaines directed by Yvan Attal and based upon the novel by French writer Karine Tuil. Alexandre is the son of a rich and respectable family. He’s been accused of rape and his case becomes the eye of a legal and mediatic storm. The story rotates around the crucial topic of these trials: the despicable hypothesis that the victim could be consenting. The feeling is that in this year’s Venice Film Festival women have been multiplied because of the urgency of passion, confrontation, issues that only women can manage with their sharp and charming strength. n

Un film sull’elaborazione di un lutto indicibile, l’amicizia tra donne come solido sostegno da cui ripartire e il realismo magico a catalizzare le emozioni che altrimenti finirebbero per sopraffare i protagonisti. Piedra Noche segue Sina nel viaggio sulla costa per accompagnare la sua amica Greta e sostenerla nella vendita della casa estiva. Proprio in quel mare, meno di un anno prima, Greta ha perso l’unico figlio e ora ha bisogno del suo aiuto. Mentre stanno preparando tutto e si preparano a consegnare la chiave, Bruno, il marito di Greta, sostiene di aver visto qualcosa che confermerebbe le voci della gente del posto sull’apparizione di una strana creatura. Attraverso la figura di Sina, testimone che ci percepisce e ci racconta, il film parla della devozione e della convivenza e accettazione delle credenze e convinzioni dell’altro, nella tenerezza di un patto per superare il dolore.

«Ricordo quando da bambina mio padre mi portava a nuoto alla grotta di Polifemo. E mi raccontava di Ulisse, che, tanti anni fa, aveva attraversato come noi questi mari». Con queste parole di Giovanna Taviani, figlia d’arte di Vittorio Taviani, si apre il viaggio del doc Cùntami, in anteprima alle Notti Veneziane. Su un furgone rosso carico di pupi, la regista percorre la Sicilia dei nuovi narratori orali, sulle orme del cuntista e puparo Mimmo Cuticchio, “guida” del percorso. «Questo film», afferma Giovanna Taviani, «è prima di tutto un mio cunto di gioia e di dolore, dedicato alla mia infanzia e alla mia memoria». Dove «ciascun protagonista rivive in modo intimo e sperimentale il mito».

L’ERA LIZZANI NELLE FOTO DI ANTONIETTA DE LILLO

Che gran regalo ci ha fatto Antonietta De Lillo, riaprendo le porte del suo archivio e recuperando una serie di scatti fotografici realizzati poco più che ventenne, come fotoreporter, alla Mostra di Venezia negli anni 1981-1982, tempi in cui il cinema celebrava al Lido grandissimi cineasti e si preparava alle sue future significative mutazioni. E non sarà stato un caso che nel 1992 la regista volle dedicare un videoritratto proprio ad Angelo Novi, un fotografo del nostro cinema, che ebbe il privilegio di lavorare sui set di Pasolini, Rossellini, Leone e Bertolucci. In questo documentario, tramite Novi, ci racconta che una «bella fotografia» non è mai «quando il fatto è già compiuto», ma «immediatamente prima o dopo di questo». I ritratti più emozionanti sono quelli in cui il soggetto fotografato abbandona la «rigidità» della postura consapevole e si concede al ritrattista senza il timore di proporsi in maniera iper-controllata e con la forzatura di un sorriso, lasciando il proprio pensiero fluire libero e alla mercé del suo interlocutore. È una questione di fiducia reciproca, di un rapporto simbiotico che si pone come basilare. I ritratti di questa bellissima Mostra fotografica denotano un’eleganza non costruita, raggiunta da Antonietta De Lillo tramite un taglio preciso dell’inquadratura, a volte un ambiente insolito (Nanni Moretti fotografato in una stanza da bagno o Robert Altman in una camera da letto), uno sguardo inequivocabilmente pensante o di dolce sfida, motivi tutti di attrazione nel quale riunire gli elementi di senso. Forse è vero che le immagini devono - come ogni cosa, come ogni seme, come ogni essere vivente – morire per “essere”, che devono cristallizzarsi per essere ricordate. Questa Mostra sembra proprio confermarlo.
