A sport in the rehabilitation programme is an adjunct strategy to promote independence and community reintegration. Celebrating the 50 th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Institute, the Sunday Services : August 14, 2016 Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation organised a 6.00 pm : Scudder Auditorium Wheelchair Basketball match on 22 nd July, 2016, at the Dr. Sunny Philip : Hospital Chapel Basketball Court of the College Campus, alongside the cultural 6.30 pm Rev. Robin Phipon Lepcha programme, Pegasus. Dr. Mary Verghese, a graduate from CMC Vellore, sustained spinal cord injury in 1954 following an accident and thereafter was rehabilitated in Australia due to the lack of such facilities in India. Inspired by the need to make these services available in the country for people with disabilities, she underwent higher training in Rehabilitation Medicine from the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, New York. On returning, she founded the Rehabilitation Institute at Bagayam, Vellore, in 1966. The Wheelchair Basketball match was organised to improve awareness on abilities of patients with paraplegia due to spinal cord injury. There were 2 teams of 5 players each, all of whom were victims of spinal cord injury who underwent therapy at the Rehabilitation Institute to become independent in their activities of daily living. They were introduced to wheelchair sporting activities, which have been recently incorporated into the rehabilitation programme of the institute. Five of these players are part of the Tamil Nadu Wheelchair Basketball team and
