A sport in the rehabilitation programme is an adjunct strategy to promote independence and community reintegration. Celebrating the 50 th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Institute, the Sunday Services : August 14, 2016 Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation organised a 6.00 pm : Scudder Auditorium Wheelchair Basketball match on 22 nd July, 2016, at the Dr. Sunny Philip : Hospital Chapel Basketball Court of the College Campus, alongside the cultural 6.30 pm Rev. Robin Phipon Lepcha programme, Pegasus.

Dr. Mary Verghese, a graduate from CMC Vellore, sustained spinal cord injury in 1954 following an accident and thereafter was rehabilitated in Australia due to the lack of such facilities in India.

Inspired by the need to make these services available in the country for people with disabilities, she underwent higher training in Rehabilitation Medicine from the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, New York. On returning, she founded the Rehabilitation Institute at Bagayam, Vellore, in 1966.

The Wheelchair Basketball match was organised to improve awareness on abilities of patients with paraplegia due to spinal cord injury. There were 2 teams of 5 players each, all of whom were victims of spinal cord injury who underwent therapy at the Rehabilitation Institute to become independent in their activities of daily living. They were introduced to wheelchair sporting activities, which have been recently incorporated into the rehabilitation programme of the institute. Milestones: Paediatrics Establishment Expands The newly constructed Paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU), renovated PICU and Q6 East Isolation ward were dedicated by Rev. Dr. T. Arul Dhas, Chaplain, on 6th July, 2016 and inaugurated by Dr. M. C. Mathew, Chairman, CMC Vellore Association, in the presence of Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Associate Director, Dr. C. E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Sanjeeth Peter, Vice Chairman, CMC Vellore Association, Dr. Indira Agarwal, Head, Paediatrics, Dr. Sundari Edwin, former Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Reju Thomas, Ag. Head, Paediatric Surgery, Mrs. Florence, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, Mrs. Ruma Nayak, Head, Paediatric Nursing and Dr. Prabhakar Moses, former Head, Paediatrics.

At the ceremony held in commemoration of these recently furbished facilities, Dr. Ebor Jacob, Professor, PICU referred to the Paediatric HDU (medical and surgical) as a long-felt need of the Department of Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery. He acknowledged the support of the administration, the PICU team, all Paediatric Units and Engineering Departments and their role in efficiently seeing this project to completion.

There are now 13 Paediatric HDU beds, which include 6 beds exclusively for Paediatric surgical patients. All these beds are fitted with provision for mechanical ventilation and haemodynamic monitoring, boosting the total strength of Paediatric Critical Care beds (including PICU beds) to 24.

Q6 East Isolation ward now has 14 beds installed for enteric and respiratory isolation separately. Two of these isolation beds are also equipped for mechanical ventilation.

Hepatology observes World Hepatitis Day The Department of Hepatology conducted a Hepatitis Virus Awareness programme on the occasion of World Hepatitis Day – 28th July. A Hepatitis Education Module was displayed on all OPD screens from 21st to 28th July, 2016, following which outpatients and by-standers were encouraged to take part in a quiz based on it. This drew 4255 participants who actively came forward to complete the quiz. The winners were presented certificates by Dr. Rohith Amrithanand, Deputy Medical Superintendent (OPD Service).

World Hepatitis Day was thus duly honoured in CMC by the combined efforts of personnel from OPD services, Liver Nursing and Telephone Exchange.

Gynaecologic Oncology initiates Home Visits The Department of Gynaecologic Oncology has begun a new initiative of visiting patients who live nearby, following their cancer treatment.

Ms. Kala, the social worker, plans and contacts patients who live in and around Vellore and Chittoor. A team from the department, comprising consultants / fellows have made 6 such trips. More visits are planned to be organised every fortnight. It is hoped that these home visits allow psychosocial assessments, encourage the family and ensure follow-up care for patients.

Retirement Mr. Maria Lazar, Hospital Attendant Gr. I, Geriatrics Medicine, became a part of CMC on 9th July, 1984 and after service of 31 years, retired on 1st March, 2016. His two sons, Mr. Anthony Rajkumar and Mr. Pradeep Premkumar are Hospital Attendants in Laundry and ‘A’ Block respectively; he has a daughter as well.

The CMC community extends its thanks to him for his years of service to the institution and wishes him well as he enters a blessed retirement.

Sponsorship for Staff Children - MBBS Admissions 2016-2017 Applications are invited from staff for sponsorship of their children for admission to the MBBS course in the Christian Medical College, Vellore for the Academic Year 2016 – 2017 only if you have not applied for the same earlier. Forms will be available in the Directorate from 4th August, 2016 onwards. Please produce your ID Card at the time of receiving the application.

A. Eligibility: (Cl.Min.No.5188-11-79; 7449:6:93 & 9282:1-2003) 1. Only children of confirmed C.M.C staff members who: (a) have put in 10 years of continuous service including period of probation and are currently in service in any capacity in the Institution as on 30th June of the year under consideration; (OR) (b) have retired after at least 15 years of continuous service in the Institution, or have taken voluntary retirement after 25 years of continuous service; (OR) (c) have been discharged from service on medical grounds after at least 15 years of continuous service; (OR) (d) have died during service after at least 10 years of continuous service in this Institution are eligible to apply for sponsorship.

2. Legally adopted children of staff members whose adoption was finalised at least five years before the date of application are also eligible for sponsorship, subject to the above criteria.

3. Regarding a confirmed staff member who died during service to the institution and whose spouse has been given a job in CMC in place of the deceased staff member, dependent children of the deceased staff member will be eligible for CMC sponsorship if the cumulative years of service of the deceased staff member and his/her spouse (including probation and confirmed periods) exceeds 10 years; in case the child applying for sponsorship was legally adopted by the deceased staff member, the adoption of the child should have been finalised: (a) prior to the death of the deceased staff member, and (b) atleast five years before the date of application for sponsorship B. Conditions for sponsorship of staff children (Cl. Min.5759:3-84) (a) Only one child from a family can be admitted in a year to any single course. (b) Children from the same family can, however, be admitted to different courses in the same year. (c) Sponsorship is allowed from only one sponsoring body, so children applying for C.M.C. sponsorship cannot also be sponsored by one of the supporting Churches of the Council. (d) Where there is more than one sponsorship obtained, the one received first which satisfies the criteria will be accepted. (e) No withdrawal of first received valid sponsorship is allowed.

Staff children, even with CMC sponsorship, must still meet the minimum academic qualifications for the courses for which they are applying. Staff are urged to check the prospectus to ensure the eligibility of their children for the MBBS course before submitting their applications.
