Bazen öğlen yemek saatinde hastaneden veya aynı eyalette bulunan Yale Üniversitesinden gelen hocaların sunum yaptığı konferanslara katılıyorum. Bulunduğum klinik, Norwalk şehrindeki maddi imkânları sınırlı olan hastalara uygun fiyatlarla hizmet veren bir klinik. Poliklinik hizmeti çerçevesinde sabah üç hasta, akşam üç hasta görüyorum, tedavilerini yazıyorum, konsültasyon gerekiyorsa onu öneriyorum. Hastanede de iki farklı staj alanımız var; biri yoğun bakım biri de normal hasta katı. İlk senem olduğu için hasta katına en erken ben gidiyorum, tüm hastaları tek tek görüyorum, beni endişelendiren bir şey varsa kıdemlim olan kişi geldiğinde hastanın durumunu onunla tartışıyorum. Daha sonra test sonuçları, laboratuvar testleri, kan tahlilleri gelmeye başlıyor sisteme. Bütün vakaların üzerinden tek tek geçiyoruz. O günkü planı tartışıyoruz. Sorumlu bir hocamız geliyor, bütün hastaları hocaya anlatıyorum ve hepsi hakkında ayrı ayrı rapor yazıyorum. Anlayacağınız epey yoğun geçiyor gün. Henüz beş ay oldu uzmanlık eğitimine başlayalı. Bu sene böyle geçecek. İşimden arta kalan zaman çok az olsa da hobilerimi ihmal etmemeye çalışıyorum. Piyano çalıyorum ve o nedenle eve bir klavye almayı düşünüyorum. Ayrıca buradaki arkadaşlarımın önerisiyle kapalı alanda duvar tırmanışı yapmaya başladım. Koç Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesindeki eğitiminiz nasıl geçti? Liseyi, tıp fakültesine gitmek isteyen büyük bir grup ile birlikte Galatasaray Listesinde okudum. Hepimiz Koç’u istiyorduk. Ailemle Koç Üniversitesinin tanıtım gününe gittiğimde o kadar çok etkilendim ki “Tıp fakültesi olmasa da olur, ben burada okumak istiyorum.” demiştim. Ortamdan, öğrencilerin enerjisinden, Şevket Ruacan’ın (o zamanki kurucu dekanımız) konuşmasından çok etkilenmiştim. Tıp okumak zaten zorlu bir süreç; altı sene sürüyor. Ayrıca birçok tıp fakültesi üniversiteden kopuk;

at the hospital or the ICU. Winter is especially busy and patient traffic is high. I am always in contact with patients, and my work is therefore quite intensely practice-based. Sometimes I attend conferences during lunch-hour to listen to presentation by physicians from the hospital or visiting lecturers from Yale University, which is in the same state. The outpatient clinic provides low-cost medical services to low-income residents of the city of Norwalk. When I am on duty at the clinic, I get to examine three patients each in the morning and in the afternoon; I prescribe their treatments and call in further consultation, if required. At the hospital there are two types of internships, one in the ICU, the other on the inpatient hospital floor. Because I’m the intern this year, I will be the first to arrive at the hospital to do patient rounds, and if there is any cause for concern, I will take this up with the chief resident. Later on, test results, lab reports and blood screens will start coming in. We discuss every patient individually and decide on our course of action for that day. When the attending physician arrives I give him an update on each patient and write up their
