The layers within Nominated for an Emmy? Curating an exhibition?
With a surgeonâs precision, Nickolai Walko (BFA â14) presses down on his blade and carves, peeling away layers to reveal the muscle and bone below. Only Walko isnât a surgeon. The Sculpture + Extended Media alum uses wood, paint, masking tape and an X-Acto blade to create high-contrast, intricate and stylized depictions of human and animal anatomy. One piece, Steed, pictured here, won the Virginiaâs Finest Award this summer at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Artsâ Boardwalk Art Show. âI love doing human anatomy,â he says, âbecause no matter what we look like on the outside, thatâs what we all are underneath.â
