GODLINESS This week, it is time to break a bad habit or begin a good one. Try forgiveness in place of bitterness, praises in place of curses, and restraint in place of indulgence. Praying for fellow Christians around the world is one way of increasing our gratitude for the things we have. You can check your progress at the end of the week. Commit you intentions this week to God in prayer. Add godliness to perseverance (v. 6). The Greek word for godliness means “godly, pious, or devout.” Godliness cannot be manufactured. We cannot merely pretend to be godly. The quality of godliness comes from God himself. God must give that quality of life to us. We receive it as we die to self and live for God and as we allow the Spirit to live within us. The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) are attributes of the character of God. The more we are possessed by God, the more we will act like Him and the more His character will be revealed in our lives. Practicing godliness may seem an intimidating task, but Jesus called us to be perfect and mature because our Heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). Our job is to try to model God’s character albeit imperfectly. God’s grace covers our failures; we just need to keep trusting and trying.
