A Note from the National President Dear Members, The National committee met during July. We covered a variety of topics one being changes to our constitution. John has provided the proposed amendments in this issue of the AVN. Please take the time to review the recommended changes. These amendments will be voted on at the next National AGM. The Committee also discussed the possibility of selective advertising in the AGM. This advertising will be open to sponsors that can provide national coverage of products/services that are relevant to our club e.g. wiring harness providers, Motor re-conditioners, Historic vehicle insurers etc. This initiative will provide : Details of providers that will facilitate the restoration and maintenance of vehicles. Will also provide additional income to be used for member services. The committee will utilise opportunities to use this initiative without reducing the content of the magazine. Thankyou to Karon Whitfield for researching and preparation of information for suppliers/sponsors. If you want to obtain the ‘Supplier /Sponsor Information Pack’ for potential opportunities please contact Karon. The National Rally Survey results are in. Thank you to those that took the time to participate in the survey. In summary the results can be best summed up by one member’s comments: “I would prefer the AGM and National Rally to be held together, but I would like there to be flexibility in when the National Rally can be held - away from the hottest months. If changing the constitution to achieve this can’t be done, then separating the two events is my next option.” For those members wishing to view the full results. It can obtained from the Website - click on ‘Members Section’. You will be asked for a password which is vaux45 Regards

BRITISH CAR DAY GINGIN: The day wasn’t off to a good start with the weather forecast predicting showers. I am sure this put a lot of regular attendees off coming but we still had a pretty good turnout. Geraldine and Roly Miller left home at 4.30am to attend the and due to the weather spent quite a lot of time in their vehicle. They were spotted by the media and a photo appeared in The Northern Valley News.

Cars on display were Selkirk’s Bedford Camper, Linthorne’s Viva, Alison Cooper’s Ute, Ron Mallard’s Victor, Horley’s Ute, and Allatt’s and Miller’s J’s. Non-members who had a Vauxhall on display were Jason Ferris with a 50’s Velox (which previously belonged to Clive Morgan, and it was great to see the vehicle again after a long time), David & Beverley Antrill with a PADX Cresta and someone with a 1977 CF Bedford (didn’t find out who it was!). Also in attendance were Sue Churn and Kevin Clarke with their buses and in moderns were Terry Duke, Rene, Celine, Danique & Tristan Chaperon and Debra Selkirk & Steve Lemney. COUNTRY WEEKEND AWAY TO TOODYAY: Toodyay is only an hour away from Perth, even less for the Selkirk’s and Linthorne’s, so for them it was great to have a short trip to get to an event. They left on Friday afternoon and were settled in at the caravan park well and truly by evening. Both couples were tenting!! A nice park situated on the banks of the beautiful Avon River. Celine and Rene had already set up their camper when they arrived and grandson Tristan was cycling around the Caravan Park on his bicycle. Staying at the caravan park were those mentioned above as well as Laurie & Jo Lupton in their AVan, Debra, Jack & Steve in a camper, and Des & Tina shared a cabin with Dave & Sue Churn. At the second caravan park in town were Norm & Pam Johnson and Len & Joy Douglas. The following members stayed at a hotel in town – Alan Cheetham, Keith & Jill Cullimore, Clint & Merelyn Horley and Jack & Nadia Watson. Rob & Lucy Hore drove up on the Saturday after having dropped their granddaughter off at Gidgegannup and joined us for dinner at the hotel before driving back home. Rob was going to the Eagles game the next day so they couldn’t stay. On Sunday there were more day visitors who joined us – Ron Millard, Martin & Tina Brett and Eion & Pauline Allatt. Saturday night was a dinner at the Victoria Hotel and this turned out to be a great night. There were two large tables between everyone and there was lots of fun and laughter going on at both tables. The food was very good and the service excellent. Sunday saw everyone meet at local member Danny & Michelle Sims property. Danny had invited the club to look at his vehicles and he also had a large quantity of spare parts (many for Vauxhalls) which he had come by from an ex VOCA member. Jim, with the help of a few members went through lots of these. Danny donated these parts to the Club and Jim went back a few days later and picked them up. It was agreed at the next meeting that a donation be given to Danny for these parts which are now in a shed at Jim’s property in Gingin and are available for sale to any members. August

- Page 7

After the ladies had a look around Danny’s shed they sat outside in the sunshine underneath the trees and had a pleasant time talking and watching the sheep and Alpaca in the adjoining paddock. Sue, Merelyn, Tina and Hellen cut up rolls, onions etc and Danny cooked sausages on his barbecue for everyone. It was a very enjoyable morning. Most headed into the town for a look around before heading either home or back to their respective accommodation. Keith & Jill Cullimore joined Selkirk’s and their mob at the caravan park for a BBQ tea and there was a roaring fire going in an old truck rim, which Tristan & Jack were happy to keep fed with wood. Of course, marshmallows were toasted on the fire later in the night!! All in all, a very enjoyable weekend was had by those who attended. ANNUAL DINNER: The 2015 dinner was held at the Wing Bo Chinese Restaurant in Maylands. It was a very mixed banquet menu and a change from the usual quite formal annual birthday dinners. However, the venue was great - we had our own section - and the food was delicious (and plenty of it). Thanks to Donelle for the table decorations, they were lovely and if you wanted to you could purchase one of the gorgeous Buddha’s she had on each table. There was a good turnout (44 by my count) with both old and new members attending as well as 4 children. Mandy Cahill came along with Hellen & Jim and she enjoyed catching up with members who know her, also it was nice to see Sue White from Kalgoorlie attending. YORK MOTOR SHOW: The day didn’t start off too well as there was a very heavy fog and it could have been quite dangerous up in the hills. I usually like to travel early but because of the fog didn’t leave till 8.30am and still encountered some heavy fog in the dips on the road to York, but arrived safely. The weather must have discouraged quite a few because there didn’t seem to be as many cars on display this year. We had 5 cars - Kevin Clarke, Terry Duke and Brian Johnston (Collie) , each in their E Velox, Kevin Lupton in his Tourer ‘Elliott’ and Donelle Phillips in her Viva. Two other members Robert Ingley and Graeme Murray were spotted during the day. The weather didn’t deter the public, there was a good crowd, it was just a shame more members didn’t take advantage to represent the Club and have an enjoyable run in their beautiful Vauxhalls. Thanks to Donelle Phillips for this write-up. WESTERN AUSTRALIAN EVENTS see Page 15. -

Vauxhall Bedford Opel Owners International Rally May 2015 T

his years International Rally was held in glorious weather in the County of Cork, Ireland, There was barely a spot of rain on any day to spoil the fun.

T

he events, and possibly the weather, were capably organised by the VBOI Irish representative Bill Ryan. The weekend started on the Friday afternoon. After booking in to the Mallow Hibernian Hotel and Leisure Centre, attendees had the option of a short run to the Wildlife Park before we all met at the hotel bar in preparation for the welcome dinner. Rally attendees had travelled from England, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium and 4 members of VOCAustralia, joining a number of members from Ireland.

T

he largest group of cars were the 18 from England, followed by 13 cars from Holland. Cars in attendance included a 14/40, two 20/60s (one Holden bodied), DX, Js , Es, PAs, HAs, FC, FDs, FEs, Firenza, Manta and more recent Vauxhall models.

T

he following morning was the first of our full day touring itineries. Firstly it was a drive, lead by Bill Ryan in his FD Victor 3.3 police special in full Gardia livery, through Cork to Cobh (pronounced Cove) Harbour. This historic harbour was the last port for the Titanic’s maiden voyage. Cobh Harbour is the second largest deep water harbour in the world – second only to Sydney Harbour. It was also the point of emigration for many Irish migrants to Australia and the USA during the 19th century. Our visit to Cobh included a harbour cruise with a very informative commentary by the cruise ship captain.

A

fter lunch in Cobh we drove around the harbour foreshore till we reached Camden Fort on the western headland. This is an underground fort constructed in the 1840s to provide protection for the harbour and the British fleet. Bill had arranged for the Fort to be opened for a private guided tour of his guests. A pleasant drive in convoy through the countryside got us back to Mallow in time for dinner and our evening’ s entertainment. After dinner we enjoyed a display of Irish Dancers before the band August

arrived to get us on the dance floor till midnight. Special mention must be made of the dancing proess of both Bill Ryan and our own VOCA NSW member Brian Brenner, who tirelessly and professionally smoozed the ladies around the dance floor for several hours.

S

unday morning we cadged a ride with Mick and Beryl Johnson from the UK in their black 1954 Velox. We all left in convoy for a private visit to the Kilgarvan Motor Museum. This small family run museum contained an eclectic range of cars on display, including Rolls Royce, DKW, Auto Union, Steyer, Alvis and a one owner FB Victor Deluxe. Perhaps the most photographed exhibit was an early 1950’s “barn find” Buick 2 door. So rusty and decrepit that it would surely disintergrate if someone tried to retrieve it. We carried on to Kinmare for lunch, then toured along the lakes before returning via Killarney to our hotel base.

T

hat night we enjoyed another sumptuous 3 course dinner before our farewell speeches. This was a most enjoyable Rally with wonderful camarardrie among the delegates. They came from so many countries with a common interest in the products of Vauxhall Motors Luton. Many thanks Bill Ryan for the efforts you put in to making this such an interesting and fun Rally for those who attended.

I

reland is a great country for driving. There are many motorways with nowhere near the traffic volume that you find in the UK or other parts of Europe. The National Roads (highways) are generally pretty well kept as well. Motorway speed limit is 120kph. The rest of the Irish roads mostly have three speed limits – 100kph, 60kph and “Stuck behind a tractor”. Before we picked up our rental car we were told you can treat the speed limits either as a guide or a target!

Victoria & Tasmania PAST EVENTS: 14 JUNE – DONNYBROOK HOTEL – PUB RUN Yet again, we had a great ‘Pub run’ on a ‘sun drenched winter day’! Some of the participants joined with the Austin A 40 club members at Village Green car park and drove in convoy to Plenty Road, Mill Park which was our next assembly point (Bunnings Car Park). Many more members joined in, on the next phase of our journey to Woodstock. Known as Mini Mexico City, this is the most amazing place I`ve ever seen, with a heavy touch and influence of ‘Eldorado’ being blended into a re-designed Aussie landscape and I felt as if we were in the middle of America!. The creativity, craftsmanship and artistry involved, in the wooden buildings, other displays and structures were simply breath taking. We all had a good time there, followed by lunch at The Donnybrook Hotel. The food was great and let me express, once more, it was our privilege to have this event combined with the Austin A 40 club. We had 11 Austins, 11 Vauxhalls and 61 participants representing both clubs. Our thanks to Eddie and June Madden for all the effort taken, well done! Those in attendance were Bob and Joyce Brumby, PA, Hugh and Elaine Walker, Carlton, Kav and Dishni Fernando, E sedan, Eddie and June Madden, Viva, Andrew Yarnton, PA, Geoff and Shirley Wells, Cavalier, Chris and Helen Varty, Silent 80, Paul Calleja, L Caleche, Margaret and Ray Cripps, DX Roadster, Roger and Isabel Whitehand, L sedan, Roy Junghenn, Victor, John and Kate Harriman, Dianne and Andrew Johnson, Leigh and Karen Whitfield, Mary and Graham Griffiths, Glenn, Debbi and Lindsay Hubbard, Maree and Robert Berry were all in moderns.

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE NATIONAL CONSTITUTION OF THE VAUXHALL OWNERS CLUB OF AUSTRALIA INCORPORATED Dear Members, Your National Committee has had a number of meetings over the last 18 months during which we have discussed proposals to amend the Constitution. A number of amendments were put to members at the National Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Marion South Australia in January this year. The amendments were all presented as one proposal and, due to the contentious nature of one of the amendments, they were defeated. The Committee has now drafted a new set of amendments that will be presented to Members at the next National AGM. This will be held during the National Rally at Horsham Victoria in January 2016. The proposed amendments may be grouped as follows: • Minor changes to references of the Club being not for profit, and to co-operate and affiliate with other organisations and road users (Definitions and Objectives) • Introduce references to the Bedford marque as well as the Vauxhall marque (Objectives and Article #1) • Officially update our way of recording, communicating and banking by including reference to internet based transactions, records and correspondence (Article #4(c), Article #8 and Article#9) • Correct some incorrect dates in the current Constitution (Article #3(c) and Article #9(e)) • Tidy up the wording relating to the holding of the AGM in January (Article#4(b)) • Specify what constitutes a quorum for an AGM (Article #4(d) and (e)) • Include the position of Regalia Officer on the Committee of Management of the National Executive (Article #7(a)) • Set out the responsibilities of the Regalia Officer in the Constitution of the Club (Article #14) • Clarify the positions of the four members of the National Spares Committee (Article #12(e)) A motion to amend the Articles of the Constitution will be put to members at the AGM next January. John Reid National Secretary Vauxhall Owners Club of Australia Inc

Sadly NSW has recently lost long time member Billy Booth. Bill helped many of us with our restorations, he will be missed. Our thoughts are with his wife & family.

VALE MALCOLM PITCAIRN To all the Australian club members who had the fun of attending some of the many and various New Zealand car rallies over the years, some may have had the good fortune to meet and experience the hospitality of Carol and Malcolm Pitcairn from Christchurch. They were members of the New Zealand Vauxhall Club for many years and quite a few Aussies had car loans and been accommodated by the Pitcairns. It is with sadness that we have been informed by Carol, that Malcolm passed away on the 24th June, with his family by his side. He had on-going chest and lung problems and finally they took their toll. He was truly a very kind, helpful and generous man and ever the gentleman. It was a pleasure to have known him. Carol is doing okay and is fortunate to have their daughter and granddaughters nearby. We wish her all the best

Caboolture en route. Twenty-three Club and visitor vehicles, including five Vauxhalls, set off from Strathpine, travelling through picturesque regions of Kallangur and Petrie to our morning tea stop on the banks of Lake Kurwongbah. Awaiting our arrival were a further 17 vehicles and their owners from C.H.A.C.A. What a beautiful Park! And a popular spot judging by the vehicles parked along the Lake foreshore. The Rally organisers of both Clubs set alternate routes for their Club members to and from morning tea and we all met up once again at for lunch after

travelling through rural regions & passing some very impressive acreage properties on the northwest outskirts of Brisbane. We joined C.H.A.C.A. members for lunch at the Bunyaville Conservation Park, another popular lunch spot where large numbers of day-trippers were taking advantage of the beautiful weather & the facilities. The C.H.A.C.A. Club supplied a very enjoyable B.B.Q. lunch for all for a gold coin donation, an excellent idea & much appreciated. Vauxhall owners attending - Bob & Truus Perry, Martin & Nellie Schobbe, Campbell & Hannah Ritchie, Graham & Sharon Auld & new members Bill & Cecily Ridderhof who drove down from the Sunshine Coast to join us for the run. Thanks to organisers of both Clubs for their efforts, the rally routes we travelled were perfect for winter motoring, made all the more enjoyable in the company of like-minded folk! Sharon Auld. Cheers RACQ 2015 MOTORFEST, 12 JULY 2015. EAGLE FARM RACECOURSE. We intrepid club enthusiasts gathered together at the rear of Toombul Shopping Town, at an unGodly hour, willing to face whatever this day threw at us. Winter had arrived in Brisbane & as the wind howled around us I noticed our cars even seemed to be parked closer together – sensing the cold. I am sure that I was not the only one who struggled to get out of bed & make it just in time to drive off as a group to Eagle Farm. Just after 7.00a.m. we moved off in convoy to the back entrance where officials vetted us thoroughly before allowing us to proceed into the racecourse where we parked as a group in the display area at August

the rear of the members stand. Here we could relax & have morning tea & lunch. Our group comprised over 30 vehicles so we took up most of this covered area this year. We had cars from the Vauxhall Club & Leyland P76 Club in our flock this time, so there was plenty of chatter. After braving the gusting winds blowing through our shaded area we were eager to explore all the sunny areas where many other types of cars were displayed. It was obvious that vehicle numbers were down on last year’s display, but there were still in excess of 500 vehicles. I reckon the longest journey for the day was taken by V.O.C.A. member Helen O’Dempsey who drove down from Toowoomba in her Vauxhall Monaro & reached Toombul by 7.00am. At the end of proceedings, around 4.00pm, she then left to drive back home- to start work early next morning. The day’s “Hard Luck” story went to Bob & Truus who had, NOT one but, two cars fail to proceed that morning. As I mentioned above, at around 3.45pm or 4.00pm, we packed our possessions back into the vehicles & ushers guided us out via the back gate to travel homeward. This had been another enjoyable & interesting outing. We just had to keep out of the gusting winds that swept through the shaded areas & move around out in the sunlight as much as possible. HR Bob. Footnote: Thanks to B.N.A.A.A. member Bob Bannan who kindly wrote the report for this month. .V.O.C.A. Members in attendance included Ron & Joy Capil, Martin & Nellie Schobbe, Helen O’Dempsey & Graham & Sharon Auld. See back cover for photos .. ED.

NSW PAST EVENTS REPORT continued from Page # – COCKATOO ISLAND SUNDAY 31ST MAY What a wonderful way to start the day – with breakfast at Parramatta Lake. We all waddled away after our fill of, eggs, bacon & pancakes. We made our way to secure parking near the Rydalmere ferry wharf. The journey by ferry to Cockatoo Island is certainly a lovely way to travel especially when you take the extra-long scenic route via the Harbour Bridge & Circular Key. Cockatoo Island is one of Sydney’s hidden gems. It has a varied and interesting historic past from the penal settlement with convict built prison, through to the Ship Building Yards and the tunnels built during World War II. Cockatoo

Island also offers spectacular harbour views – We enjoyed the best views in Sydney from the steps of the sandstone Superintendent’s home. Cockatoo Island has also been the home to many a movie, we saw the exhibition from the props from the movie – ‘Unbroken’. Who would have thought they could recreate the prison & match brick walls using hessian with painted on brickwork? To watch the yachts sailing past so closely is also an enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. So if you are in Sydney & haven’t been to Cockatoo Island might I suggest you try & add it to your must do list.

National Rally 2016 – Victoria - update It is very pleasing to report that entry forms are starting to roll in now. If paying by cheque – please be sure to fill the cheque out correctly. If paying by EFT – again be sure to include your name in the Reference section so that we can readily identify you. We have been asked for some information regarding the planned visits so here is a short run-down on the Monday’s outing: • The Doll and Carriage Museum is one “not to be missed” – for the ladies – the doll collection is superb - and the carriage display will interest everyone. • Morning tea will be available for us here. • The Hall’s Gap Zoo is incredible – lots and lots of animals, birds etc. to see – and we will have our lunch stop here before heading back to Longerenong. All of this in a fully air conditioned coach makes for a very relaxing day’s outing. Tuesday’s outing will be in the next issue of VOCA Newsletter. If for some reason you have misplaced your entry form, it is available on the Vauxhall Owners website. For any further information please call –

Editor’s Ramblings

Hi Vauxhallers,

Here we are again - seems there has been a lot happening in the World of Vauxhall. This issue covers a lot of it, including the VBOA International Rally in Ireland, and before you have recovered from that, I have already received details regarding the next. If you are interested in participating the next VBOA International Meeting will take place in the UK - Yorkshire Dales over the weekend of May 20th 2016. Entries will be invited later in the year. The Yorkeshire Dales have previously hosted the Tour De France and the VBOA event will be based in the 3 star Mercure Leeds Parkway Hotel. I’m sure after reading John’s write up of this year’s event that you will be tempted to give the next some consideration. While talking Rallies, I have been asked about the progress of the Murray River Run. We are making good progress with the rough route now planned. We are aiming for a start date of 29 March, with those wishing to hike to the source (which may be a bit challenging) starting a little ahead of the rest. The tour will take in some beautiful scenery & will offer a relaxing break from the madness of daily life. There will be lot’s of variety on offer to allow you to do as much or as little as you choose. We plan to celebrate the conclusion of our tour aboard a cruise where the Murray meets the Sea on about the 18 April. More details & proper entries will be issued prior to year end. I was glancing through history pages recently when it came to notice that it has now been 101 years since the introduction of Electric Traffic Lights. It seems they have multiplied in that span of time. Is there anyone that can take the car for a spin without stopping at at least one of them? Anyway hope you enjoy this issue, a little late due to inclusion of lot’s of official business. Remember look at the Spares Sale items on the reverse of the Address Sheet. Till next time - Safe mtoring!

Carol Rickard

Cheers

Letter to the Editor Dear Carol, I have been meaning to write to congratulate the Committee on the decision to move the publication of the magazine to bi-monthly. I think this is so logical. Not only does it eliminate duplication but it allows the magazine to consolidate into a more substantial missive. I am a member of a number of clubs, not just car, and none produce a monthly magazine. I am sure also it must relieve the load on such worthy volunteers as yourself, hopefully encouraging you to continue offering your services. On another note, the “Flying Visit” interview of me in the last edition was something I plagiarised from another Car Club Magazine. To get the ball rolling, I simply answered the questions myself but I hope it emerges as a regular column. In the other car club, it is a most popular inclusion.

On to the next challenge,

John Maclurcan. Thanks John Moving to bi-monthly would certainly reduce the commitment needed to complete each publication as it will give additional research time for each issue. As I’m sure everyone is aware, I am not always lucky enough to have enough information supplied by the members each month to make the AVN an interesting and well rounded read, although, I hope I have made it a publication worth reading. Perhaps a permanent change to bi-monthly would also make the position of Editor an easier one to fill. Only time will tell. ED. August

Can you help? The late Hollywood TV producer Mike Frankovich had a 1962 Cresta Friary Estate Wagon (pictured) among his Super Cosmos car museum collection in Sun Valley, California. Mike passed away in 2007 and his collection was auctioned. I’m told some of his cars went to Australia. I’m curious to learn if any of the club members may know the present whereabouts of the Friary? Thank you,

Jim Marr
