York Region’s charitable organizations aren’t being stuck up when they refuse the donation of certain items. Each organization that accepts donations, from Vaughan to Georgina, have policies surrounding acceptable items. While donors might feel slighted by these organizations refusing donations of certain things, there are reasons behind the rules. "Some people donate items because they love them and want that item to be continued to be loved," Rose of Sharon’s development director Rachel Agnoluzzi said. The organization that supports young mothers across the region primarily relies on monetary donations to improve lives going forward, however, it does l See THERE, page 11

Virginia Fiore is a cancer survivor who is walking in the The Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefitting the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre on Sept. 9.

Vaughan woman overcomes health, life challenges TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com When Vaughan’s Virginia Fiore is on the Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre this Saturday, she’ll surely be thinking of her own three-decade healthcare journey. It’s been quite a rollercoaster ride for the 48-yearold mother of two, who was diagnosed with Hodgkins disease at age 17 and breast

cancer two years ago. In between, Fiore has had a tubal pregnancy, two children, a 100-pound weight gain and weight loss, arthritis in her right hip, hip replacement at the age of 33 and her thyroid removed four years ago. As noted, it’s been quite a ride. But the spunky Fiore is not easily deterred. However, when her husband left her two years ago, she admits she was suicidal. "I was so depressed, but I

Carmen Angilletta photo

Carmen Angilletta, 53, who works in Woodbridge, was incensed last week when he was driving along Hwy. 7 near Martin Grove Road and saw workers cutting the boulevard grass before picking up the litter. The result was far more litter created than before the grass was cut. vices for the Region of York said: "We appreciate the resident raising his concerns. The process in situations like this is for crews to pick up litter on site before cutting the grass. Crews were dispatched yesterday, Aug. 28, to pick up the litter

on site before cutting the grassy area and were out again today, Aug. 29, as well." "Residents can visit York.ca/appcentre to download our York Region mobile app to report any problems they see on regional roads."

woke up one day and decided it was time to help. If I can help one person, just one, it will mean so much to me," said Fiore. She’s proud that after being told when she got her hip replacement 15 years ago that she might only be able walk with a limp, that she now plays soccer in a league with her 20-year-old daughter. "I don’t even look my age. I’ve kept myself looking good, too," she said proudly.

A York Region official says a citizen was right to complain about shoddy grass-cutting in Woodbridge that left more garbage after the job than before. And, based on the citizen’s complaint, the region sent staff out to clean up the mess they’d left behind and promised to pick up garbage before cutting in future - just as the citizen had said they should. Carmen Angilletta, 53, who works in Woodbridge, couldn’t believe it when he saw a works crew out cutting the grass last week along Hwy. 7 near Martin Grove Road. Angilletta said it’s a "pet peeve" of his when workers don’t pick up garbage before they cut. And he said when he drove by, the "amount of garbage just blew my mind. I couldn’t take it. They were cutting the grass before picking up the garbage. They were cutting everything, plastic bottles, typical highway type garbage. "If we throw out one piece of garbage and create 10 by cutting it, we’re all screwed, we’re all going to be living in garbage," he said. Angilletta sent pictures into the City of Vaughan, but since Hwy. 7 is a regional road, his complaint was passed on to the Region of York for processing. A response on the issue confirming that Angilletta was right when he said the garbage should be picked up before workers cut came from a York Region official on Tuesday. EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

Motorists must focus on stopping distracted driving It shouldn’t have to be re-stated at this point and yet here it is: distracted driving is dangerous and unacceptable. How dangerous? Well, according to the Ontario Provincial Police, distracted driving is responsible for more collisions on the roads it patrols than speeding and impaired-related crashes combined. Numbers don’t lie and the OPP’s statistics are troubling to be sure. Its figures say that driver distraction has been the cause of 6,360 collisions on the roads it patrols since Jan. 1, while speeding and driver impairment were responsible for 4,700 and 1,158 crashes, respectively. Forty-seven people have died so far this year as a result of a distracted driver, up from 39 at this time last year, the OPP says. What’s more, distracted driving has claimed more lives on OPP-patrolled roads than speeding and impaired for the past eight years except for 2012. "Our collision data is compelling evidence that drivers who text, talk on their cellphone or are distracted in some other way, take a tremendous toll on the safety of those who share the road with them," OPP commissioner Vince Hawkes said in a statement. "Public complacency about inattentive driving can be just as dangerous as the behaviour itself. Until drivers, passengers and the general public take a firm stand against this road safety issue, these tragedies are expected to continue in large numbers on our roads.’’ Distracted driving remains an issue on the roadways patrolled by area police as well. Just last week, York Regional Police issued a news release noting that 25 motorists had been charged with impaired, while 82 others had been cited for distracted driving. The release isn’t unique as YRP charges scores of people with distracted driving every week. The penalties for being caught driving while distracted are steep, with fines ranging from $490 to $1,000 and three demerit points, and yet still not enough to discourage people from doing so. Of course, beyond a fine or a trip to a courthouse, a distracted driver could also have to live with severely injuring or killing someone. This week marks the start of a new school year and that means more children out and about on our streets. As such, we should all ensure we devote our attention solely to the task of driving whenever we’re behind the wheel. One injury or death resulting from distracted driving is too many. Let’s focus on reversing this trend.

Number of dump trucks raises safety concerns It seems every week there is a report about an accident involving a dump truck causing death or serious injury on Hwy. 27 or Hwy. 9. I am convinced that the data would show that on a per capita basis, they have a disproportionate number of accidents compared to other vehicles on the road. The number of dump trucks on these roads has exploded in recent years and there have been tragic consequences. Can someone please point this out to the Minister of Transportation and do something about it? Like, get them off two lane highways. Angela Rose, Schomberg

Be mindful of meanings behind symbols Re: Display of Confederate flag at Sutton Fair sparks criticism, Aug. 23 I am totally in agreement with the sentiments expressed by Nelson Mahmoudi in the front page story of Thursday, Aug. 24, of the Georgina Advocate. All Canadians should follow rule of law RE: LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Letter offered plenty of propaganda, Aug. 3 Since letter writer Wendy King ask us to read all about the Khadr story, perhaps she should read the story of Fred McKay, whose son Kevin was killed by an IED while on patrol in Afghanistan. (Toronto Sun, Aug. 5) He believes, as I and many

more Canadians do, that Khadr should have been tired as a traitor. McKay, whose family received $90,000 from the government, not that he argues that amount. His objective is to have parliament ask Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to have Khadr tried for treason, since he is seen on video building IEDs while being a Canadian citizen. Trudeau has not responded. Too busy with photo ops, I guess. John King, Newmarket

While these textiles can’t be resold in the store, funds are generated by selling them to cloth graders who turn them into rags, sell to buyers who make upholstery stuffing and carpet padding. Every effort is made to recycle non-sellable items with eco-friendly suppliers. Most of the time electronics need to be in working order to be donated.

l Continued from page 1

have Roseys Closet for gently used donations. Often people try to donate car seats, cribs and more with the best of intentions but with those items come liability because the safety standards of such items change so often, according to Agnoluzzi. Those who wish to donate items should check online or call the organization before doing so because any items left on the front stoop cost money and resources to dispose of. Salvation Army Thrift Stores accept donations daily through the Donor Welcome Centres. Donations are reviewed on site and while some get a second chance in the store, some do not, according to a Salvation Army spokesperson. Items the stores cannot accept include used mattresses, box springs, carpets, hazardous materials

Other charities shy away from accepting large furniture due to the risks associated with volunteers or employees moving the heavy items and they are difficult for people to fit into their vehicles. Items that cannot be resold, reused or recycled cost the charity funds to dispose of, which defeats the purpose of collecting donations.

| Vaughan Citizen | Thursday, September 7, 2017

There are reasons behind refusals of donations

Advice for those looking to donate

Mike Barrett/Metroland

Salvation Army Thrift Store employee Carlos Silvera (left) and store manager Matthew Brown are usually kept busy with donations regularly arriving at the Newmarket store. Thrift shops across York Region aren’t snubbing donations when they refuse certain items. Certain policies and logistics make it impossible for some organizations to accept certain items due to health regulations and safety concerns. like paint, propane tanks, barbecues, infant gear like car seats, cribs and strollers, tires and auto parts due to health and safety regulations. Many children’s items such as car seats,

have an expiry date and sometimes cribs and strollers are subject to recalls due to safety concerns. Used mattresses are a breeding ground for mould, bacteria and unwanted

guests such as bedbugs and dust mites, all of which can lead to a variety of health issues. The stores also receive clothing that is torn, stained and overly worn often.

Sort through donations carefully and if you are unsure if an item is acceptable, contact the charity you are looking to donate it to. Don’t head to the landfill immediately after an item is refused for donation as there are plenty of options when it comes to recycling or donating: • The Ontario SPCA accept donations of blankets, towels and unwearable textiles. • York Region municipalities are partnering with organizations like Diabetes Canada to operate a textile recycling program. • York Region waste depots accept electronics to recycle. • JRCC Furniture Depot in Vaughan collects housewares, indoor furniture, medical/home-care supplies and equipment. • Visit York.ca for a handy list of organizations you can donate to, location and what items they accept. • Try using resale apps to find a home for the item, you never know what people are looking for. • Dispose of hazardous materials in the proper manner at one of the many depots across York Region.

By Sam Potter IF YOU suffer from low back pain and sciatica, you are one of over 2 million adults in Canada with this often crippling spinal condition.

Shooting, stabbing and burning pains from the low back, sometimes with additional pain through the buttocks and down the legs are all symptoms of a pinched nerve often called “sciatica”. In severe cases, it can lead to muscle wasting, numbness and constant tingling down to the tip of the toes. Left untreated, the intense pain can rapidly wear you down and drain the joy out of life. That is, until now... Recent advances in the treatment of sciatica and lower back pain have led to the development and huge success of Non-Surgical Re-Constructive Spinal Care. The excellent results of chiropractic treatment have been published in major medical journals. With success rates as high as 90% some back surgeons and medical doctors are recommending their patients try this treatment first before having back surgery. In Vaughan, you can try NonSurgical Re-Constructive Spinal Care at Atlantis Chiropractic – the office of low back pain and sciatica relief Chiropractor Dr. Birk D.C. Dr. Birk and his team of fully trained

Amazing relief for back pain and sciatica spinal care professionals have helped over 1,000 patients find relief from their agonising back pain and sciatica. According to Dr. Birk, “We use a combination of ultra-advanced technology, for precisely diagnosing the cause of your low back pain and sciatica; and a unique program for reconstructing the damaged area causing the pain; this means long-term results for most people.” The treatment is non-surgical, safe and easy. Patient Mathew B. from Woodbridge says, “My back pain was unbearable but the worst thing was the searing burning pain I felt in my buttock and leg. I couldn’t work or do anything useful and the drugs my MD prescribed hardly did anything. My wife insisted I respond to one of these articles, I thought it would be a total waste of time, but I’m so glad she kept on at me. Thank god I called your number, I’m 95% better in just a couple of weeks.” Your invitation for a comprehensive consultation and examination to pinpoint the cause of your low back pain and sciatica... Vaughan Citizen has teamed up with the spine therapy Chiropractor at

Atlantis Chiropractic, to help readers find relief from their persistent back and sciatica pain All you have to do to receive a thorough diagnostic examination with the advanced technology and a comprehensive easy to understand report on your state of health is call 905-264-9355. Mention this article (CODE: LOW9355) and Dr. Birk will happily reduce his usual consultation fee of $267 to just $43. But hurry, due to obvious reasons – this is a time limited offer – with only 100 reader consultations available at this exclusively discounted rate. My advice, don’t suffer a moment longer... Find out if Non-Surgical ReConstructive Spinal Care can help you, book a consultation with Dr. Birk and his team now by calling 905-264-9355, they are waiting to take your call today. They actually treat the cause of your health problem, not just your symptoms. That’s why hundreds of grateful patients tell them “Chiropractic gave me back my life!” Over the years, they’ve treated thousands of patients with back problems and sciatica. The vast

majority of them have enjoyed superior, lasting relief. In fact, many who’ve suffered and have tried other remedies have told them chiropractic gave them back their lives! Call them now and get a full and thorough examination to pinpoint the cause of your problem for just $43, the normal cost of such an exam is $267 so you will save $224! Don’t suffer from the pain and immobility any longer. Discover the natural treatment that can eliminate the cause of your problem and give you the safe, lasting relief you deserve. Call them now on 905-264-9355 and cut out or tear off this valuable article now and take it to your appointment. You’ll be entitled to a comprehensive examination to diagnose the cause of your problem – and you’ll be on your way to safe, lasting relief! Don’t delay your important diagnosis and treatment another moment! You can even call on the weekend and leave a message on their answer machine to secure your spot as they promise to return all calls; and during the week they are very busy, so if they don’t pick up straight away do leave a message.

Sciatica Relief Chiropractor and Published Author Dr. Birk D.C., says: In 15 years of practice, I’ve never seen a treatment as effective as NonSurgical Re-Constructive Spinal Care for patients with sciatica or lower back pain. For obvious reasons they can’t help everyone at this reduced price, so please call soon to secure your special opportunity. Call 905-264-9355 NOW and leave a message if it’s the weekend or the line is busy - they promise they will get back to you as soon as they can. College teachers will vote on whether or not to strike on Sept. 14. The Ontario Public Service Employees Union has asked the Ontario Labour Relations Board to schedule a strike vote for faculty at Ontario public colleges. The OPSEU bargaining team is still at the bargaining table with college management, having just completed a nine-day stretch, but there is only one thing the two sides can agree on, according to the chair of the college academic bargaining team, JP Hornick. "It is quite clear that we have very different visions for the system," she said. "We have put forward a number of proposals that would further support the success of students, but management feels the system is working and nothing needs to change." Hornick points out 80 per cent of teaching hours are done by contract workers who have to reapply for their jobs every four months, the definition of a counsellor needs to be updated to reflect the support of student mental health and more academic freedom needs to be given to faculty so they are involved in decision making. "This year marks 50 years of college in Ontario and we think it’s a great time to reflect and make adjustments for the next 50 years," she added. The current contract expires at the end of September.
