Vaughan’s mayor is asking residents "not live in fear,” after three people were killed and seven shot in four separate incidents, including Laquan Lyew, 26 of Ajax, who was shot five times in his car in the early morning hours. Lyew tried to drive away, but crashed his BMW into a pole near Jane Street and died on the way to hospital from gunshot wounds. Mila Barberi was killed and Robin Banks was injured in separate shootings.

Mayor urges calm after 3 dead, 7 shot TIM KELLY tkelly@yrmg.com Vaughan’s mayor is asking that residents "not live in fear," despite a three-week swirl of violence that has left three people dead and seven shot in four sep-

arate incidents. The wave of bloodshed in Vaughan culminated in a bulletfilled weekend that saw a man gunned down hit-man-style Friday night in Woodbridge, followed by a shooting at a Steeles Avenue-Weston Road area hook-

hah lounge that left three people wounded, including an Aurora woman and two Toronto men. On Saturday, in between the shootings, Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua called for calmer heads to prevail. He said residents, "should not

Headstones mark fallen soldiers at the Cabaret Rouge British Cemetery near Arras. The Canadian victory at Vimy Ridge was part of the larger battle of Arras.

Private Robert Buckles was born in 1897 in Long Branch, near Etobicoke. He was the youngest of four brothers, had brown hair and blue eyes, and enlisted in 1916 in Toronto. He served with the 38th Battalion Canadian Infantry. His family lived in Newmarket and ran a general store in Long Branch. The 19-year-old farmhand was instantly killed by enemy shell fire during the attack on Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917.

Vimy Ridge battle took its toll on York AMANDA PERSICO apersico@yrmg.com This year, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge April 9 to 12, 1917, a defining moment in Cana-

Private Frederick Leo Jennings was born in Stouffville in 1892 and served with the 3rd Battalion Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action on April 9, 1917 during the attack on Farbus Wood, a side battle taking place at the same time to capture the woods and secure Arras about four kilometres south of Vimy Ridge. The five-foot-10-inch baggage man with blue eyes enlisted in December 1915 in Toronto - 18 months after his marriage to Lillian Fern Jennings. Private Edgar Albert Bowes was born in 1887 in Concord. He served with the 13th Battalion Canadian Infantry.

dian history. Enemy forces captured the ridge early in the war and previous allied assaults were unsuccessful. Canadian forces moved to the front lines in late 1916 and spent the winter

strengthening communication lines, mining an intricate network of tunnels laced with explosives, and training rigorously in model trench systems and in mock ridge formations. For the first time, the

Canadian Corps divisions fought side-by-side as one united front. Part of the heavily-defended ridge was captured by noon on April 9. Days later, German forces retreated and the Battle of

Vimy Ridge was over. About 100,000 Canadian soldiers fought at Vimy Ridge, resulting in more than 10,000 casualties and close to 3,600 dead, including these eight men from York.

The 28-year-old farmer enlisted in March 1916 and was killed in action at Vimy Ridge 13 months later on April 9, 1917. According to census records, his family moved from Concord to Richmond Hill between 1911 and 1921. The 29-year-old with grey eyes and black hair is buried at the Vimy Memorial in France. Private Frederick Alfred Lake, served with the Royal Canadian Regiment and transferred to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was 37 years old when he was hit in the lung and killed by an enemy bullet while proceeding in

the attack at Vimy Ridge. The five-foot-nine-inch mechanical engineer with dark brown hair, brown eyes and a dark completion enlisted in Vancouver on July 8, 1916. He was born in Scott Township, which is now part of Uxbridge, and lived in Sutton West. Private Herbert Melville Beamish was born in Newmarket in 1894 and served with the 18th Battalion Canadian Infantry. The 21-year-old machinist with hazel eyes and brown hair enlisted in June 1915 in Niagara. The five-foot-eight-inch soldier was killed in action at Vimy Ridge April 12, 1917 - the last day of

the battle - at the age of 23 years old. He is commemorated at the Mount Pleasant cemetery in Toronto. Corporal Albert Edward Usherwood, born in Newmarket in 1896, served with the 2nd Regiment Canadian Mounted Rifles. He enlisted at the age of 19 in Alberta in February 1915. According to his military attestation papers, the 18-year-old horseman had a fair complexion with grey eyes and light brown hair. Usherwood was killed in action at Vimy Ridge, April 9, 1917. "Being with the battalion and

seeing a good deal of him, I am able to tell you that Bert was regarded as one of the bravest noncommissioned officers we had. He was a good, steady lad." wrote Chaplin Hon. Major Thomas Augustine Wilson to Usherwood’s mother, Mary. Private Earnest Barber was born in Kent, England in 1887 and died April 10, 1917. He served with the 2nd Regiment Canadian Mounted Rifles. The five-foot-five-inch tanner with blue eyes and brown hair enlisted in Toronto in 1915. He went missing after action and was reported dead April 10, 1917. Barber and his wife, Florence, lived in Newmarket.

Private Caldwell Eugene Brown, born in Aurora in 1892, served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. The five-foot-five-inch journalist with the Newmarket Era had grey eyes and light brown hair, and had enlisted in Toronto in December 1915, a month shy of his 24th birthday. Brown, then 25, was reported wounded and missing during the battle of Vimy Ridge. He was later reported killed in action on April 9, 1917. He was in a dugout trench that was blown by enemy shell fire, killing him instantly. His parents, Byron and Elizabeth, lived on Niagara Street in Newmarket.

THE ART OF ORCHIDS:

City of Vaughan photo

Lt. Addison Alexander Mackenzie on horseback at the start of the First World War.

If you spend time in and around southern York Region, you’re probably familiar with Major Mackenzie Drive, but many people don’t know that road is named after a Canadian war hero who was gravely wounded during the Battle of Vimy Ridge 100 years ago. Addison Alexander "Lex" Mackenzie was born and raised on his family’s farm in Woodbridge along with his four siblings. He decided to pursue a military career joining the Governor General’s Body Guards in 1904 as a private. Mackenzie rose through the ranks first becoming a squadron sergeant-major then a lieutenant in 1912. At the beginning of the First World War, he was transferred to France where he served with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles. He was quickly promoted to captain as a result of his pre-war militia experience. In 1916, Mackenzie led his troops in a daring, daylight reconnaissance mission before launching an assault on the German army at Regina Trench during the Battle of the Somme, one of the war’s bloodiest battles. Mackenzie was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry. He was promoted to major and led the 4th company at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. During the fierce fighting, Mackenzie was severely wounded by shrapnel from an artillery shell, but continued to serve in the army’s training system until the end of the war. Though Mackenzie survived, his younger brother, Donald Ross, was killed in 1918 in France. Upon returning home, Mackenzie settled on the family homestead in Woodbridge and took up farming. A few years later, he became immersed in municipal politics, serving azs a Village of Woodbridge councillor from 1922 to 1926 and as reeve from 1927 to 1935. In 1945, Mackenzie jumped to provincial politics, serving as a Progressive Conservative MLA representing York North until 1967, when he retired at age 82. Mackenzie died May 13, 1970 and is buried at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery on Pine Valley Drive, just north of Major Mackenzie Drive. Also named in his honour are Alexander Mackenzie High School in Richmond Hill, Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and the Royal Canadian Legion Mackenzie Branch 414 in Woodbridge.

They’re called all-candidates debates for a reason

The Vaughan Citizen, published every Thursday, is a division of the Metroland Media Group Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Torstar Corporation. The Metroland family of newspapers is comprised of more than 100 community publications across Ontario.

During an election, it’s not always an easy task for voters to get a handle on who’s running and what they stand for. Busy schedules mean it can be challenging for candidates to connect with citizens at the doorstep, and pamphlets seldom offer more than a selection of partyapproved talking points. Given that, all-candidates events are an important part of the process as they allow voters to not only hear their would-be representatives discuss important issues but ask questions as well. Well, that’s how it’s supposed to work. More and more, all-candidates debates are looking like some-candidates debates. Take for example, what was intended to be an allcandidates debate for the Markham-Thornhill byelection that took place March 30. Rather than learning more about all seven individuals vying to replace longtime Liberal MP John McCallum, who was named ambassador to China earlier this year, those who attended the event heard from just four candidates. Despite organizer John Richardson sending out invitations to the candidates on March 21, neither Liberal candidate Mary Ng nor Conservative candidate Ragavan Paranchothy took part. Paranchothy chalked up his inability to attend to a scheduling conflict, while Ng’s campaign claimed it received the invite too late and that she had a series of roundtables and meetings with residents with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Libertarian Party candidate Brendan Thomas Reilly also didn’t make it. Residents who came to the event couldn’t help but feel slighted. "I feel personally quite insulted," said one attendee in the audience of about 20. "This is an all-candidates debate and I’m not going to get information from some of the candidates." While that’s hardly a big turnout, who knows if the numbers might have been higher if all the candidates had been present. Similarly, we can’t know for certain what, if any, effect the no-shows had on the ballots cast in Monday’s byelection, but it would have been nice to know that voters in the riding had at least a single chance to hear and potentially interact with all of those running before going to the polls. A healthy democracy involves the people, and allcandidates meetings and other such events are an important part of the process. When candidates opt not to participate or otherwise fail to make themselves available to those they wish to represent, it can only serve to breed cynicism and apathy among the electorate.

Story raises questions about police, justice system Re: Family spends thousands, 3 years battling police assault allegations, March 2. The story with the bloodied faces of an elderly father and son shocked many us because it came very close to another Sammy Yatim incident. It raises troubling questions about police training and use of force, and the (in)justice system. Officers arrive in force to a resident’s house regarding a tip from someone about erratic driving. The 67-year-old father tells them his son was tired from working late. Although police "ob-

The officer’s feeling this is "the scariest night of his life" (who can refute this?) ran after the son, and after the melee the father and son are handcuffed, tasered, left with broken ribs and orbital bone etc., and beaten red/ blue in the face. There is no search warrant, no drug/alcohol test done. What was the purpose of the police visit? Police video/audio cameras are off. Why? The victim’s phone,

which was recording all this, was found in the toilet. Subsequently one officer pleads guilty to assault and is put on probation, community service etc. while the others apparently did nothing wrong, heard nothing, saw nothing. But the hapless father and son are charged with assault. Who assaulted who? The family is nearly financially ruined, not to mention the hell they must have gone through in defending the assault charges for 3.5 years. This was an open-andshut case from the beginning, but dragged on only to have the charges

dropped after a 20-day trial. Justice delayed, justice denied. The delaying behaviour of lawyers and judges responsible is exactly the "cultural complacency" blasted by the Supreme Court last July when it set time limits for cases. This case negates 10,000 heroic acts the police/ Crown probably have done because a simple misunderstanding escalated to such a continuing tragic situation for a family that could easily be any one of us. Praise the family’s courage and wish them justice, and praise the Liberal for the coverage. Looking forward to future reports and lessons learned. Jim Katsios Thornhill

Food industry veteran pens book for budding entrepreneurs ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Bruno Codispoti is a seasoned veteran of the food industry, having spent two decades battling to secure prime shelf space in grocery stores and the LCBO. Now, the Vaughan resident is sharing lessons learned from his sweet victories and sour defeats in a new book dubbed Food Fight Inc. Codispoti started writing about five years ago to chronicle the myriad products he and his brother/ business partner, Dave, have launched together. "At some point I said: ’I think this would be really helpful for startup entrepreneurs, especially food entrepreneurs," the 44year-old father-of-three said. "As you sit down with these would-be entrepreneurs, there’s a lot of patterns; the questions are all similar. You also start to realize there are certain roads that lead to failure and certain strategies and roads that will keep you going. So I wrote it to give startup entrepreneurs a leg up." Codispoti’s career began at Beta Brands, which

had the rights to brands such as LifeSavers. Then, he jumped to food industry giant The Quaker Oats Company. Following that, he started his own firm, BrandFusion, which has enjoyed successes from the launch of Kernels Popcorn Shakers in grocery stores to the creation of Crazy Uncle Hard Root Beer, last summer’s hottest seller at the LCBO. In Food Fight, Codispoti shares the knowledge he’s gleaned from those tasty triumphs as well as from the times his bread failed to rise. For instance, there was his overzealous attempt to team up with former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar to create a high-end margarita mix, or his failed pitch to partner with superstar chef Jamie Oliver. Written in a conversational style with a dash of salty language sprinkled in, the 227-page book makes for a fairly quick read. Many of the chapters feature a section called Let it Simmer, where Codispoti dices the key lessons into easy-to-chew morsels. The book serves up a lot of the ingredients needed to

succeed, but there’s one piece of advice Codispoti hopes his readers digest. "I think the fundamental lesson in the book - I express it a few different ways - is that the fight in Food Fight refers to the fact that it’s a battle of repetition. Even if you strike out 20 times, you’ve got to keep on swinging because it might be that 21st swing that connects," he said. Codispoti also paints a pretty clear picture of the man behind the book, especially his passion for music, which is proudly displayed on the book’s website, where you’ll find a link to a song he wrote to promote it. "After someone reads it, I want them to say: ’I want to sit down for a beer with this guy. This guy seems like a very approachable, down-to-earth guy’," he explained. Food Fight Inc. only came out April 1, but early reaction has been positive. "People are pleasantly surprised because they think they’re going to be getting a very structured business book, but it’s a very entertaining read." To find out more, visit www.foodfightinc.ca.

Lt.-Col. Sandi Banerjee of The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada holds wooden poppies that 11 students headed for Vimy Ridge in France made and sold to help raise funds to assist veterans dealing with mental illness and the families of fallen soldiers. Their students’ efforts raised $1,200 for the cause.

Residents mark Vimy anniversary with journey to battle site SIMONE JOSEPH sjoseph@yrmg.com Lieutenant-Colonel Sandi Banerjee has been to Vimy Ridge many times. He knows well the history and significzance of this French landmark. But when he visits this month, his trip will be special. This time, the Thornhill resident takes the journey alongside his wife, son, daughter and 10 Thornlea Secondary School students as well as staff. This time, it will be the 100th anniversary of the battle, the commemoration of a historic win for Canada. Banerjee has high hopes for the Thornlea students journeying to France. "I hope they get the same sense of pride I did my first time there," he said. "I hope they get a sense of national accomplishment. This effort was the whole of Canada . It was the first time every regiment was there." The attack on Vimy Ridge, an attack on the Germans in northern France, began on April 9, 1917. It was a costly victory, which left 3,598 Canadians dead. But the Canadian success would later be called a defining moment for Canada. The Vimy Memorial was unveiled in 1936. It reminds visitors of the 11,285 Canadian soldiers killed in France who have no known graves. The Thornlea students will visit the Vimy Region, including of course the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, which pays tribute to more than 10,000 soldiers killed or wounded in battle. The students will join fellow Canadians for the 100th anniversary ceremonies of Canada’s victory in Vimy Ridge.

The students will also be taking a detour to an elementary school in Anisy, France. The high school students will witness a road dedication. The people of Anisy are naming a road after Clarke Lawson, a soldier from Toronto killed in World War Two. Grade 11 student Reannah Ennis is one of the Thornlea students participating in the trip. Asked which aspect of the battle of Vimy Ridge she found most interesting, she responds with two interesting aspects: "All three (Canadian) regiments were battling together. Canadians came up with the battle plan." Gordon Izumi, head of the history department at Thornlea S.S., sees this trip as a way of making history real for his students. "There’s no replacement for experiential learning," he said. "It’s the best kind of learning". Izumi is glad the students will be surrounded by people with a connection to Vimy. "When you are there with the veterans and the families of people who died, it makes it more real. It makes history come alive," he said. In preparation for the trip, the Thornlea students made more than 100 wooden poppies and sold donors the right to have dedications written on the poppies. Students raised $1,200 and will be leaving the poppies on soldiers’ graves. The $1,200 will go towards taking care of soldiers’ families while the soldiers work overseas. On the cusp of his journey, Banerjee reveals how important it is to visit the famous battleground of Vimy Ridge. "I’ve often thought Vimy is one of those places every Canadian should go to once in their life."

Flowers marked the spot Sunday where Domenic Triumbari, 55, was shot and killed Friday night outside Club Cosenza in Woodbridge.

Bloodshed in Vaughan culminated in a bullet-filled weekend l Continued from front

city was still among the safest in Canada. On March 23, Laquan Lyew, 26 of Ajax, was shot five times in his car in the early morning hours on Hwy. 7 at Interchange Way. Lyew tried to drive away, but crashed his BMW into a pole near Jane Street and died on the way to hospital from gunshot wounds. And on March 14, 28year-old Mila Barberi was shot by a masked man as she waited to meet a friend who was also shot in the parking lot of a Vaughan company. Police have sent out a video in the Barberi killing. Police are still looking for the culprits in the Lyew and Barberi killings and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. This past Sunday, a lone bouquet of flowers was all that marked the spot

where 55-year-old Domenic Triumbari was killed on Friday night outside Club Cosenza social club. The dramatic hit was partially caught on video that police have released publicly in their effort to have witnesses come forward. Triumbari was killed steps away from Club Cosenza and police were quickly convinced the killing was a targeted one. Early Monday morning at Club Cameo on Steeles Avenue near Weston Road, violence broke out at the hookah lounge as the crowd of more than 150 was roiled by gunfire. In the end, three people were left wounded by gunshot fire, with police now on the hunt for two suspects. One of the men who was shot, Toronto rapper Robin Banks, 22, has been upgraded to stable condition

in hospital. Police have released images of two men wanted in the shooting. Rushawn Anderson, 19, of Toronto turned himself in Tuesday, but police are still looking for Nicholas Rhoden, 26, of Toronto, for attempted murder. York police also released details on what they say is the vehicle suspects were driving, a black, fourdoor 2013 Honda Accord with tinted windows with the licence plate BZMX845 "These men are both considered armed and dangerous," York police said of the suspects. "If you spot them or the vehicle, do not approach; call 9-1-1 immediately." Anyone with information is asked to contact the Homicide Unit at 1-866-8765423, ext. 7865 or homicide@yrp.ca or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS.

22 CELEBRITY

Enrico Colantoni to be honoured at film festival ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com

Enrico Colantoni

A celebrated Canadian actor, who hails from York Region, is being honoured at this year’s Vaughan International Film Festival. Nobleton’s Enrico Colantoni will be presented with the 2017 Independent Leader Award during the fifth annual celebration of

short films, which runs May 15 to May 18. Colantoni is best known for his roles in Flashpoint, Galaxy Quest, Just Shoot Me and Veronica Mars. The 54-year-old Toronto-born actor is the first Canadian screen star to land the award, launched three years ago to recognize strong supporters of independent film.

The two previous honourees were American. Character actor Michael Madsen, of Reservoir Dogs fame, garnered the inaugural award in 2015, while 90s film star William "Billy" Baldwin took home the award last year. As always, this year’s festival features two days of film screenings, an industry seminar day and an awards ceremony to close

things out. Those attending the seminar day will get a chance to pitch a script to producer, director and actress Amy Jo Johnson, best known for her roles in Power Rangers, Felicity and Flashpoint. That event takes place Tuesday, May 16 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Aloft Vaughan Mills Hotel, 151 Bass Pro Mills Dr. To find out more, visit www.vaughanfilmfestival.com.

McMichael’s new executive director takes helm ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com The McMichael gallery’s new top boss has arrived. Ian Dejardin, a 61-yearold art historian, officially

took the reins at the Kleinburg gallery April 3. He comes to Canada after 12 years at the helm of the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, England where, among other things,

he launched the much-lauded Painting Canada: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven exhibition.Dejardin succeeds Nathalie Mercure who took on the role of interim executive director

role in September 2015 following the departure of Victoria Dickenson who stepped down after serving in the role from 2011 to 2015. Dickenson was hired several months after Thomas Smart abruptly resigned in July 2010, following what many in the art world deemed a highly successful tenure that had greatly improved the gallery’s reputation.
