42 interest minimizes maintenance and irrigation needs. Red Maples shade the driveway and ‘Little Gem’ Magnolia and Serviceberry trees complement numerous native oaks, dogwoods and sourwood trees that were preserved on the lot. Encore Azaleas, Mt. Airy Dwarf Fothergilla, and fern varieties help to restore the site’s native understory. Hardscape and landscape elements complement the home’s architectural features.

guest parking and serves as a threshold to the home’s more private spaces. Permeable pavers are used in parking areas to filter contaminants and reduce run-off.

45 A stepping stone path leads the pedestrian 46 from the private parking court, between the

primary residence and carriage house and into the rear garden spaces where it provides an irregular edge between drought tolerant lawn areas and native groundcover beds. 47 A potted herb garden in gravel paving takes advantage of the minimal sunlight that the rear yard receives.

• •

48 A rain barrel captures rainwater from the

carriage house to supply water to a potting area under the carriage house’s rear arbor. A compost area further supports the home’s kitchen garden.

home’s rain garden where runoff from the rear yard’s limited lawn areas can be filtered. The rain garden is home to Virginia Sweetspire, Iris and other native plants that provide seasonal interest while tolerating saturated soils.

50 The stepping stone path meanders around the 51 site’s preserved signature oak tree to provide

access to the lawn and master bedroom before terminating at a spacious outdoor room.

52 The paver patio provides seating around a large

outdoor fireplace.

53 A circular turfgrass area surrounded by a

low hedge provides a visual terminus from the stepping stone path and serves as an overflow area for larger events.

54 A water feature generates soft noise to

complete this outdoor experience. The fireplace and outdoor patio placement serves to provide a strong visual and physical connection between the home’s interior and exterior spaces.

55 A gracious composite deck and outdoor

kitchen adjacent to the screened porch is an extension of the home’s interior living space and is programmed for additional outdoor seating and dining.
