UNDER GRADUATE WORKS
Thesis Project - Expansion to the Arts University The oldest and most accredit ed academ ic Institute for the Arts, the University of Art in Tehran has been in desperate need of an expansion for many years. This discussion was a popular topic bet ween my t hesis professor and I, which prom pted m e to elect such a program for my thesis. B y dissecting the core elem ent of education a vector identifies the direction and pass age of trans ferring knowledge. Each V ector consists of a st arting point (the instructor), a receiving end (the student), and a path through which knowledge is transferred. This was achieved through incorporating a dynam ic circular path on the site containing the v arious departments as events of education. The next step was to identify what a functional education system should achieve. A combination of hardsc ape a nd landscape elem ents, serve as a guide through the educational journey. The path ramps up to a plateau seven m eters higher than its initial starting location where the library, the student c ritique hall and auditorium are situated. Therefore the solution lies in the event of prac tice and research. A m ulti-grid geometry established through a range of factors was im plem ented within the design of the traditional Iranian S unk en Garden which collectively res ulted in to a contemporary appearance. The academic departments while different essentially share sim ilar form s and proportions to demons trate unity within the Iranian identity. Each structure’s character is an illustration of the various majors it houses. The departm ents of Loom , Fabrics, and Carpet contain a common relationship as a sinew , which set forth the design program for this structure. Colored concrete slabs woven through the exterior structural colum ns with polycarbonate panels were used to simulate a mysterious illusion ordinarily em ployed in eastern cultures and further emphasis a similarity t o the composition of a sinew. Glass works, pottery and tile works departments are included within the second building where concrete was used as a pulp. W ith the inc orporation of an established multi grid, Iranian tile work along with layers of blistered curtain glass illus trate a w eightless appearance, and begin distorting traditional façade details. Interior circulation and energy flow determined t he placement of rusted steel and acid treated copper plates on the exterior façade of t he metal, wood, stone and leather works departm ent . Steel cables were woven together within the remaining spaces of the façade, which continued to the interior creating a uniformity derived from leather works. M aterials, form s and geometry were implemented to combine traditional with contem porary design in an effort to achieve a step towards modernity with respect t o Iranian heritage.

THE INCONGROUS FORMS AND MULTIPLE ONTOLOGIES: THIS PROJECT IS ABOUT DEPARTING FROM RECENT CHARACTERIZATIONS OF ARCHITECTURAL HETEROGENEITY IN THE SENSE OF USING INCONGROUS FORMS AND MUTLIPLE ONTOLOGIES, BY UTILIZING THE RECENTLY EVOLVED MODELING TECHNIQUES IN SOFTWARES SUCH AS AUTODESK MAYA, THE DEFINITION OF THE EDGE AND THE MEETING POINTS . THE EDGES FORM CUSPS, APPEARING AND DISAPEARING BENEATH SHELLS AND SURFACES; WHICH IN THIS PROJECT IS IDENTIFED IN THE MAIN VOLUME, THE SECOND ONTOLOGY IN THIS PROJECT IS THE GROUND OF THE SITE WHICH RISES FROM THE GROUND LEVEL TO FORM A PLYNTH UNDER WHICH THE PARK DEVELOPES AND FINALLY RISES TO INTERACT WITH THE MASS OF THE BUILDING AND TAKES ON THE RESPONSIBILTY OF INTRODUCING LIGHT WITHIN ITSLEF WHERE DEEMED NECESSARY.

THE STUDIO’S JOURNEY STARTED FROM INVESTIGATING SOME CERTAIN AESTHETICALLY AND ARCHITECTURAL QUALITATIVE VALUES WITHIN A SERIES OF 2-D DRAWINGS DERIVED FROM A DIGITAL SCRIPTING SOFTWARE. AFTER SOME MANUAL MODIFICATION IN THE SCRIPT, CERTAIN QUALITIES WERE ACHIEVED, THAT WERE BASED ON THE INITIAL DRAWING, NEXT STEP WAS TO TRANSIT THOSE DRAWINGS INTO A 2½-D SURFACE AND FROM THERE FORTH, INTO A PROJECT SCALE PROPOSAL ON A CORNER SITE LOCATED IN WEST HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA. WE TRIED MANY DIFFERENT APPROACHES INCLUDING WARPING THE 2½-D SURFACE AROUND THE PROGRAMMATIC GENERIC VOLUMES, BUT EVENTUALLY DECIDED IT BEST TO START APPLYING SOME CERTAIN FEATURES—SOME OF WHICH ARE AS FOLLOWS: SPECIFIC EDGE NETWORK SYSTEM, DEEP PLEATS, DE-LAMINATION, FACE TRANSITION, AND ETC . . .—FROM THE 2½-D SURFACE TO A PRIMITIVE SUCH AS A CUBE. AFTER SOME VERSIONS WE AGREED UPON MUTILATING ONLY A CORNER OR ONE SIDE OF THE CUBE RATHER THAN THE WHOLE OBJECT. IN ORDER TO CREATE AN OPEN PUBLIC PLAZA, WE DECIDED TO LIFT THE CUBE OFF THE RAISED GROUND CONDITION IN ORDER TO OPEN SPACE ON THE GROUND LEVEL. AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THIS MOVE OBJECT WOULD BARELY TOUCH THE GROUND; ONLY THROUGH SOME EDGES AND POINTS, WHICH ALONG THE CLOTH LIKE SURROUNDING EDGE NETWORK AND THE DEEP CAVERNS, RAZOR SHARP MEANDERING EDGES, NESTED HIERARCHIES WITHIN THE DOME LIKE NEGATIVE INFLATIONS IN THE BOTTOM SURFACE WOULD CREATE A MESMERIZING EFFECT AS ONE WOULD EXPERIENCE IN MAJOR MIDDLE EASTERN MOSQUES UNDER THEIR DOMES. IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE THE DESIRED EFFECT WE DECIDED TO REFLECT OUR INITIAL DRAWING FROM BOTTOM TO TOP OF THE BUILDING CONTRASTING THE VERY FORMATION OF THE OBJECT ITSELF.
UBIQUITOUS URBANISM THE PROJECT STARTED FROM A RESEARCH ON AN ARCHITECT WHICH HAD DONE AN URBANISTIC PROPOSAL AND EITHER IT HAD OR IT HAD NOT COME TO FRUITION. IN OUR CASE THE GIVEN ARCHITECT WAS YONA FRIEDMAN AN ARCHITECT THAT PROPOSED A MEGA-SUPER STRUCTURE THAT WOULD SPAN ACROSS THE GLOBE, IDEOLOGICALLY YONA HAD COMPLETE LIBERAL VIEWS ON POLITICS AND LIFE WHICH CONSEQUENTLY GOT REFLECTED ON HIS URBANISTIC PROPOSAL. HIS IDEA CONSISTED OF THIS SUPERSTRUCTURE SPANNING LITERALLY ACROSS THE GLOBE COVERING EVERYTHING MAN-MADE OR NATURAL. THIS STRUCTURE WAS ALL HE PROPOSED, AND LEFT THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE INDIVIDUAL BUILDINGS TO THE HABITANTS OF THE CITY. THERE WAS NO RULE OR ORDER PUT FORTH BY HIM REGARDING THE ARCHITECTURE THERE EXCEPT THE RULE OF LIGHT THAT NO THE BUILT BUILDINGS ON THE STRUCTURE WAS TO BLOCK NATURAL SUN LIGHT TO OTHER ONES IN THE SYSTEM. WE DERIVED OUR PROPOSAL BY EXTRACTING A CELLULAR MODULE FROM THAT CASE STUDY IN THE FORM OF A TRUNCATED OCTAHEDRON , DUE TO ITS CERTAIN MORPHOLOGIC AND ACCUMULATIVE, AND VISUAL QUALITIES. FOR INSTANCE THIS SHAPE CAN EASILY BE TESSELLATED IN VARIOUS WAYS, WHICH INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO BITRUNCATED CUBIC , CANTITRUNCATED CUBIC, AND TRUNCATED ALTERNATED CUBIC TESSELLATIONS. DEPENDING ON HOW YOU OBSERVE THE OBJECT IT CAN HAVE VERY DIFFERENT VISUAL AND AESTHETICAL QUALITIES, I.E. FROM THE FRONT IT CAN BE PERCEIVED AS AN OBJECT WITH PERFECT PROJECTIVE SYMMETRY . AFTER THIS WE DELVED INTO THE STATISTICAL RESEARCH OF THE CURRENT URBAN PROBLEMS WHICH WERE IDENTIFIED AS IN EXTREME CASES A SUPER HIGH DENSITY OF POPULATION PER SQ/KM SUCH AS MUMBAI IN INDIA WITH ALMOST 30.000 PER SQ/KM. WHICH NATURALLY SUB-CREATES ALL TYPES OF PROBLEMS RECURRENT FROM THE MAIN ISSUE. THE OTHER MAJOR ISSUE IN THE CITIES ACCORDING TO OUR OBSERVATION WAS THE TRANSPORTATION IDEA IN THE CITY WHICH IN THE CURRENT STATE IS ONLY ACTING ON THE CARTESIAN SCALE OF X,Y AND Z DIRECTIONS. IN OUR PROPOSAL’S TRANSPORTATION IS BREAKING THE BOUNDARIES OF THE OLD PARADIGM AND ITS LIMITATIONS AND UTILIZES ALL THE SPACE AVAILABLE TO ITS CONVENIENCE. THE MAIN CONSISTING LAYERS OF THE PROPOSED URBAN FABRIC WERE DEFINED AND INTRODUCED IN THE NEXT STEP. AMONG THE MAIN LAYERS RETAIL, WORK ENVIRONMENT AND RESIDENTIAL\RECREATION CAN BE MENTIONED. THE GENERAL FORMATION OF THE URBAN SPRAWL IS ESTABLISHED BY AND GENERATIVE CONCENTRIC FLOCKING SCRIPT, WHICH AS IT ROTATES DISTORTS AND WARPS OUR GEOMETRIC FORMATIONS WITH IT AS WELL. THIS EFFECT CREATES A SEMIOLOGIC AFFECT FOR THE MORE YOU MERGE TO THE CENTER THE MORE INCLINED THE BUILDINGS BECOME, IN ALL 3 AXIS. AS FOR THE MANNER THE CELLS ARE ARTICULATED THE MORE ONE TRAVELS FURTHER TOWARD THE DENSIFICATED AREAS, THE BLOCKS REGARDLESS OF THEIR PRAGMATIC NATURE BECOME CLUSTERED AND CREATE CLUSTER BLOCKS WHEREAS THE MORE FURTHER TOWARDS THE SUBURBS ONE FEELS THE IDENTITY OF THE TYPOLOGICAL UNITS TRANSFORMS FROM CLUSTER FORMATIONS TO MORE SINGULAR AND IN THE CASE OF CULTURAL TYPOLOGIES TO ICONIC FIGURES AND OBJECTS. TRANSPORT HAS BEEN DIVIDED INTO 3 CATEGORIES, THE FAST LANE FREEWAY WHICH ONLY CROSSES THROUGH THE CITY WITH LARGE CURVES APPROPRIATE FOR HIGH VELOCITY DRIVING, FROM WHICH SECONDARY SMALLER ROADS BRANCH OFF WHERE THEY TAKE THE DRIVERS INTO THE CITY AND FROM THAT A THIRD CATEGORY OF SMALL ALLY WAYS BRANCH OFF WHERE THEY LEAD TO THE INDIVIDUAL UNITS AND CLUSTERS.

THE PROJECT’S SITE USED TO HOUSE THE GAGOSIAN RESIDENCE/GALLERY WHICH IS LOCATED IN VENICE BEACH ON THE COAST OF CALIFORNIA..., PROGRAMMATICALLY IT IS CONSISTED OF GENERAL LIVING QUARTERS, SLEEPING QUARTERS, AND WORKING. IN ADDITION TO THESE COMMON SPACES WITHIN THE HOUSE, THE CLIENT HAS ASKED US TO INCLUDE A SMALL GALLERY SPACE FOR SHOWCASING ARTWORK. THE CLIENT FAMILY IS VERY ARTISTIC AND ART ORIENTED AND THE HOUSE WE WILL ATTEMPT TO CREATE FOR THEM WILL SHOW THAT SENSE OF ENTHUSIASM TOWARDS ARTISTIC INNOVATION AS WELL AS IT WILL BE PROGRAMMATICALLY PERFECTLY WELL FUNCTIONAL. THE BASIC IDEA FOR ORGANIZING THE SPACES WITHIN THE HOUSE COMES FROM THE LOCATION. THE FIRST IMPORTANT ASPECT ONE ENCOUNTERS WHILE DESIGNING FOR THIS SITE ARE THE VIEWS TO THE SITE AND FROM THE SITE TO THE SCENERY. THE CHALLENGE HOWEVER IN THIS MATTER ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF THE SITE[WHICH AT THE SAME TIME MAKE IT INTERESTING, AS THEY SAY “LIMITATIONS ARE THE CAUSE OF CREATIVITY”]. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE AFOREMENTIONED SPATIAL QUALITIES WE HAVE TO RISE IN HEIGHT, [THE LIMIT BEING 30’ HIGH], AS WELL AS IN ORDER TO FULFILL THE SPATIAL SIZE REQUIREMENTS IN THIS CASE WE NEED TO HAVE INTERLOCKING PIECES OF SPACES[WILL BE EXPLORED MORE IN THE DESIGN PHASE]. THE NEED OF “SPILLING” THE SPACES ONTO THE AIR BORDERS OF THE NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS MIGHT COME UP AS WELL. IN ESSENCE THERE ARE TWO SETS OF SECTIONAL RIBBONS THAT DEFINE THE OUTER EDGES AND BOUNDARIES OF THE HOUSE, AS WELL AS THE INTERIOR ORGANIZATION OF THE DIFFERENT ZONES WITHIN THE HOUSE. AN EFFORT WILL BE MADE TO INCORPORATE THE CIRCULATION LOGIC OF THIS PROJECT IN THE SECTIONAL MOVES AS WELL. SO AS TO IN A SENSE THE TWO MOVES WILL NAVIGATE THE OCCUPANTS WITHIN THE PREMISES. THE FIRST SET OUT OF THE TWO WILL AS IF ENGULF THE PROGRAMMATIC PLACE HOLDERS FROM THE STREET ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE SITE, WHERE AS THE OTHER ONE WILL PERFORM THE SAME MOVE FROM THE OCEAN PERPENDICULAR TO THE LENGTH OF THE SITE . THE FIRST WILL PROVIDE VIEWS FROM THE MAIN STREET TOWARDS THE BUILDING, WHERE AS THE SECOND ONE WILL TAKE CARE OF THE VIEWS FROM THE HOUSE TO THE BEACH FRONT. PROGRAMMATIC WISE THE HOUSE IS DIVIDED IN THREE MAJOR CORES, GROUND LEVEL IS DEDICATED TO THE GALLERY , AND THE OFFICE SPACE, AS WELL AS A 3 CAR GARAGE WHICH ALONG WITH THE FAMILY ENTRANCE IS ACCESSED FROM THE BACK ALLY. THE MIDDLE SECTION [THE FIRST FLOOR], IS DEDICATED TO THE SLEEPING QUARTERS OF THE FAMILY .THE TOP FLOOR IS WHERE MOST OF THE AWAKE TIME OF THE FAMILY IS SPENT AS WELL AS WHERE GUESTS WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF. IT WILL HOST SPACES SUCH AS THE GUEST ROOM, FAMILY LIVING ROOM, THE KITCHEN, A BAR, AND A ROOF GARDEN IS ALSO PROVIDED ON TOP OF THE MIDDLE FLOOR’S ROOF, FOR THE OPEN AIR RECREATIONAL PURPOSES OF THE FAMILY. AFTER A THOROUGH CONVERSATION WITH GREG OTTO, A STRUCTURAL CONSULTANT ENGINEER AT BUROHAPPOLD ENGINEERS, IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE CONCRETE RIBBONS WILL NOT BE LOAD BEARING ; FOR WHICH PROBLEM REGULAR GRID OF STRUCTURAL COLUMNS WERE SUGGESTED. ALSO FOR KEEPING AND ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETICAL VALUES AND MAINTAIN MATERIALISTIC CONTINUITY THROUGHOUT THE EXTERIOR, AND IN ORDER TO ENLIGHTEN THE LOAD OF THE STRUCTURE ITSELF, DESIGNING A MAINLY STEEL STRUCTURE WITH 6” PRECAST CONCRETE SLABS THAT WOULD BE MOUNTED ONTO THE STEEL FRAMING UNDERNEATH WERE SUGGESTED. IN ORDER TO SERVE THE ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETICAL VALUES AN EFFORT WILL BE MADE TO CONCEAL THE RISING STRUCTURAL COLUMNS WITHIN THE RIBBON STRUCTURE. TO CONCLUDE THE TEXT, WE GO BACK TO THE TOPIC ONCE AGAIN .ARCHITECTURALLY, THE MAIN CHALLENGE FOR THE DESIGNER ON THIS PROJECT IS WHETHER TO DESIGN A HOUSE OR HOME? FIRST EACH NEED TO BE BRIEFLY DEFINED, WHAT IS A HOUSE VERSUS A HOME? TO MY UNDERSTANDING, THE HOUSE IS WHERE THE ARCHITECT IS SOLELY DEDICATED TO DESIGN IN ORDER TO PUSH THE LIMITS OF THE DESIGN DISCIPLINE USING ALL AND EVERY AVAILABLE MEANS NECESSARY, WHICH RESULTS IN AN OBJECT. WHERE AS IN MY OPINION IT’S THE DUTY OF THE ARCHITECT IN MAKING THE PUSHING THE DESIGN LIMITS ITS PRIORITY AS MUCH AS CREATING THE NECESSARY EFFECTS FOR A HOME ATMOSPHERE. HOME IS CREATED BY MEMORIES AND THOUGHTS OF THE OCCUPANTS THAT FORM IN A GIVEN PLACE, THE ARCHITECT CANNOT DIRECTLY CREATE THIS EFFECT , BUT BY CREATING THE RIGHT ENCLOSURE TO RESIDE HE CAN PROVIDE THE FOUNDATION FOR THE OBJECT TO BECOME HOME. WHAT SEPARATES THIS PROJECT FROM THE AVERAGE RESIDENTIAL HOUSE IS THE CLIENT’S HIGH SENSE OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE HEART OF THE ACTION IN THE LA’S ART COMMUNITY FRONTIER.

SCI-ARC GRADUATE THESIS PROJECT- SUMMER 2013 DESIGN NARRATIVE DALE EMBRACES SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA'S FAMOUSLY WONDERFUL CLIMATE TO SERVE THE DIVERSE OUTDOOR LIFETYLES THE SUN HAS SPAWNED. AMONG THE HOUSE'S INNOVATIVE FEATURES IS IT'S UNPRECEDENTED FLEXIBILITY. DALE TAKES THE INDOOR/OUTDOOR CONNECTION FROM VISIBLE TO TANGIBLE, AND ALLOWS THE INHABITANTS TO CONFIGURE THE HOUSE TO FIT THEIR DAILY NEEDS WITH TWO MODULES THAT WORK TOGETHER AND INDIVIDUALLY. THESE MODULES JOIN FOR CLIMATE CONDITIONING AND SECURITY PURPOSES WHEN NEEDED BUT ARE DESIGNED TO SEPARATE IN ORDER TO INCREASE INHABITABLE AREA AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LANDSCAPE WHEN POSSIBLE. DALE IS AN ENERGY EFFICIENT NET-ZERO SOLAR POWERED HOME THAT WILL CHANGE THE WAY HOMEOWNERS INTERACT WITH THEIR ENVIRONMENT.

DALE'S MECAHNICAL SYSTEMS DESIGN IS SIMPLIFIED BY THE HOUSE'S UNIQUE SLIDING FEATURES. DESPITE HAVING A LARGE LIVING SPACE, THERE IS ONLY 600 SQ. FT OF CONDITIONED SPACE, ALLOWING THE USER TO OPERATE A SMALLER SYSTEM THAN WE WOULD HAVE NORMALLY. STRATEGIC TIMING OF HEATING AND COOLING OPERATIONS ALLOWS US TO IMPROVE THE HEAT PUMP HOT WATER'S PERFORMANCE BY TRAPPING HOT AIR IN THE PLENUM SPACE.
ONE OF THE UNIQUE CHALLENGES POSED BY THE MOVEMENT ARE THE ADDITIONAL POWER DRAWS CREATED BY MOTORS AND THE FACT THAT COMPONENTS ARE NOT FIXED, REQUIRING TECHNOLOGIES NOT COMMONLY FOUND IN THE RESIDENTIAL MARKET. OUR TEAM IS TRYING TO FIND THE SIMPLEST METHODS OF MAKING THESE CONNECTIONS WORK AND HAS PLACED COMPONENTS TO REDUCE WIRING RUNS.
DALE IS ALL ABOUT CONTROL AND SAFETY. A BACKGROUND SAFETY FEATURE PREVENTS MOVING MODULES FROM COLLIDING WITH OBJECTS OR PEOPLE. SMART USER INTERFACES FACILITATE OPERATION OF ELECTRONICS WHETHER THE HOUSE IS OPEN OR CLOSED.

THE CLIENT ASKED US TO DESIGN A DOUBLE SKIN FACADE, JUDGING BY THE LOCATION AND OF THE FINANCIAL STATE OF THE CLIENT , IT WAS DECIDED TO USE UNCOVENTIONAL GEOMETEREY AND MATERIALS.[A CURTAIN WALL AS FIRST AND WOVEN STEEL MESH AS SECONDARY LAYER] THE PROJECT WAS APPROVED BY THE CLIENT ,AND IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
