Hello and welcome to the forty seventh issue of Vapouround Magazine. When I cast my eyes over a few of the featured headlines, it really is a challenge for me to stay positive… constantly surrounded by misinforming articles and pushed narratives across social media. Whether it is through targeted adverts online, swathes of propaganda or distorted public perceptions, they continue to disparage the good that vaping has done for millions of smokers worldwide. However, our global community is a resilient one, never backing down from a fight, it continues to shout out loud the colossal public health benefits these products have. With Totally Wicked along up with its long-standing partner St Helens Saints teaming up with local councils to help educate residents on how to

properly disposable of them. Not to mention two Manchester-based firms that have collaborated together to make the worlds first racing car made entirely from e-waste. There have also been some big shake ups in the vaping community, with the Middle East’s ANDS welcoming Mary Carmen Ordóñez as its new European MD. We were lucky enough to sit down and discuss how her legal background will be a huge benefit for navigating ANDS in the new European market. There is no telling what the final few months of the year hold for vaping, however, I am interested to see how the industry will combat, adapt and grow from the many challenges surrounding them. Thank you for you continued support.

SHORTFILLS Vapouround Journalists select their top picks of short vape-related stories and research making news around the world.

THE OL’ Razzle Dazzle

Inventor of the first commercially successful modernday e-cigarette – Hon Lik – celebrates turning 72 on September 26th. Back in 2003, following the death of his father due to smoking induced lung cancer, the Chinese pharmacist designed and created a safer alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes. In 2004, e-cigarettes hit the market for the first time through the Chinese company Ruyan, which Hon worked for, and in 2007 the device entered the US market. In the years since Lik’s device was released, vaping tools have continued to evolve as more and more research and funds enter the industry.

IT'S A No FROM US Following mounting pressure from critics and the public, the UK government has responded to critics over the possibility of making vapes prescription only. It comes after MP’s called for heavier restrictions on e-cigarette packaging and marketing in a bid to deter children from taking up the habit. In a written statement, Neil O’Brien of the Department of Health and Social Care said: “The government is not currently considering making vaping products prescription-only.” A spokesperson for public health charity ASH said: “It is not in the interest of public health for vapes to be less accessible to smokers than the much more harmful product: tobacco.”

The latest viral offering from the popular social media app, TikTok, comes from the likes of chaotic Irish Rap Duo ‘Versatile’, with their recently released single ‘Blue Razz’. Originally from Ringsend in Dublin, Versatile consist of Casey ‘Casper’ Walsh and Alex Sheehan – rapping under the stage name Eskimo Supreme. Named after the often referred to ‘fan-favourite’ vape flavour ‘Blue Razz’, the song has quickly circulated on social media, gaining traction far and wide, even amongst the most unsuspecting of listeners. The single has already made its way onto the Independent Singles rundown, debuting at number 16 alongside an impressive 336k views on YouTube.

THE More YOU KNOW The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have supplied a grant of $3.9 million to allow researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center to evaluate the differing effects of e-cigarette flavours. The study will be coled by Theodore Wagener alongside Tracy Smith and will be the first analysis to provide definitive information about whether different vape flavours help adult smokers quit. They aim to measure cigarette cravings, symptoms, dependence and smoking patterns in up to 1500 cigarette users across the U.S in the hopes of providing counterweight to current FDA regulations.

LYING THROUGH HIS Teeth

The list of unusual vaping side effects continues to grow - with most of the fake news emerging from social media and spreading across our timelines. ‘Vape Tongue’ is the latest fear mongering tactic circulating TikTok with Dr Stewart Beggs acting as the preacher for this ‘loss of taste’ reaction, inducing non-evidence-based misinformation. Dr Beggs – a cosmetic dentist based in Chelsea, London– has taken to his online audience to warn that vaping is ‘really, really, really not good for your health’. With no evidence, he continued to say: “This is really on the rise because of the popularity of these disposable vapes, which have all these ridiculous flavours.”

Viewer Discretion IS Advised

Patrick Gower, host of ‘Paddy Gower Has Issues’ and renowned journalist, has a new documentary titled ‘On Vaping’ airing on Channel Three and ThreeNow across New Zealand. The show claims to delve into the latest scientific “evidence” surrounding vaping and has warned viewers via Twitter that the content will not only blow minds, but supposedly ‘scare people’. Responses to an advertisement posted by Patrick Gower have claimed that attempts to scaremonger viewers is “not responsible journalism” and that causing a needless moral panic will accomplish nothing but the spread of false information.

A Sour Taste A new anti-vaping campaign targeting young Queenslanders has surfaced as the first step of a $1.3 million public health scheme launched in August. The ‘There’s Nothing Sweet About Vapes’ crusade has apparently been co-designed with the assistance of 50 youths from the area and is directed at 12-17-year-olds via social media. However, with misinformation comes pushback and the vaping community has not disappointed as hundreds of users take to Twitter to set the record straight. One user wrote: “When you tell kids things that aren’t true, they’ll reasonably ignore you when you tell them things that are true.”

EVERYBODY NEEDS RAMSAY ST GOOD

Neighbours

Esteemed Neighbours star, Jodi Gordon, was seen sporting a vape when meeting up with celebrity makeup artist Max May after recently celebrating a milestone of one-year sobriety. After undergoing ‘immersion therapy’ at a rehabilitation clinic, Jodi is now committed to leading a healthy lifestyle in preparation for her big TV comeback in the newly rebooted season of Neighbours. With the reboot returning to screens this autumn, it’s good to see the TV star using vapes as a healthier and safer alternative before going back on camera.

Saving THE NATION A recent study conducted by researchers at Brunel University London found that between 2019 and 2021, 13.6 percent of adults in the UK smoked. Based on these numbers, they calculated that if half of that percentage had switched to vaping, it could have translated to saving the NHS over £518 million - due to smoking related illnesses. This was determined by looking at data where smoking was a cause of death alongside the ward costs per day and the risk of developing cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Professor Francesco Moscone said: “Such illnesses put significant burdens on the NHS, which we know is already under increasing pressure.”

AGAINST

All Odds In response to the Dutch government’s goal to stop the sale of tobacco in supermarkets by 2024, retailer Albert Heijn announced they will no longer sell derived products, including e-cigarettes, after January. The sales at gas stations will be retained until 2030, despite statistics showing that supermarkets account for half of all tobacco sales in the Netherlands. In the face of adversity - and to keep the sale of tobacco derived products alive -Albert Heijn has elected to accelerate their plan to sell in partnership with BP gas stations.

IT’S Rude To Stare Following a public consultation launch to reduce smoking in Hong Kong, Lo Chung-Mau - the territory’s health minister - has pitched a truly bizarre suggestion... to stare at smokers. This recommendation, although an unusual one, is hoped to reduce the number of

smokers lighting up in public spaces - even if it is just from being made to feel uncomfortable. Professor Lo said: “When the members of the public see people smoking in non-smoking areas, even if no law enforcement officers can show up immediately, we can stare at the smokers.” Statutory no-smoking areas in Hong Kong hold up to HK$1,500 (£147) of penalties for breaches.

SUNAK SUPPORTS

Anti -Smoking Policies In a bid to be smoke free by 2030, the government launched a pioneering ‘swap to stop’ scheme to encourage one million smokers to make the allimportant switch. When British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was recently questioned at Westminster on how the NHS could be relieved of its ever-growing pressures, he put anti-smoking policies at the centre of his response. Sunak said: “There is such persuasive evidence from that program and the schemes that we have done on a smaller scale.” By linking the programme to a wider public health approach, Sunak is suggesting that vaping is the answer to saving our NHS, a fact that advocates have been relaying for years.

BID Farewell Moving forward, all vaping devices across New Zealand will need to have removable or replaceable batteries - meaning that foolproof disposable vapes will be banned. Is this a step backwards for the vaping industry? The new laws were announced during a press conference by Dr Ayesha Verrall, the Minister of Health. She said: “Vaping has played

18 l VM47

an important role in the record reduction of New Zealander’s smoking over the last few years. “We’re creating a future where tobacco products are no longer addictive, appealing or as readily available, and the same needs to apply to vaping.”

LEAVE No Trace With Australia currently leading the way with all things anti-vaping, it comes as no surprise that scientists in Queensland have set out to find even more strange ways to deter the public. Their current project involves testing impounded vapes for the radioactive component polonium-210 – the same poison Russia used to assassinate Litvinenko in 2006. Radiation chemist Sarah Mullins said: “Smoking two packs of cigarettes has approximately the same radiation exposure as one chest X-ray.” Polonium-210 does occur naturally in cigarette tobacco however, there has been no detection of this deadly radioisotope in vaping devices.

CLEARING Out High street giant Superdrug has announced plans to stop selling disposable vapes in all its UK and Ireland stores following calls from the Government to implement a potential ban. Brands such as Vuse Go and Flavaah Bars will no longer be sold by the franchise, which hopes to have stocks

of the devices completely cleared by the end of the year. An average of 1,300 units of single-use vapes are said to be sold per week across the country through direct purchases in store. Superdrug said it will continue to provide ‘the best choice’ for shoppers who want alternatives to cigarettes.

Russain TO STOP

OUT WITH THE OLD…

ILLEGAL VAPES

From September, Russia will be registering for production licenses for tobacco and nicotine-containing products as well as tax increases, flavour restrictions and minimum price limits. This license is expected to help reduce the illegal production of cigarettes, e-cigarettes and any other nicotine related products. The registration – signed on July 13 – will be created on the platform ‘GosTech’, which will include easy access information on issued, cancelled and revoked licenses. However, the plans for change don’t stop there…from March 2024 there will be a new full-accounting and regulation of vapes from manufacturing to distribution and retail.

A STEP Too Far Truth Initiative – a leading antismoking non-profit – has released an 18-page report outlining plans as to why the government should ban all tobacco and nicotine products, including tobacco harm reduction tools such as vapes. Of course, this report hasn’t gone unnoticed in the vaping community with many advocates and medical professionals speaking up about the harm this could create. K. Michael Cummings – a veteran tobacco-control expert and professor at the Medical University of South Carolina said: “The end game should be reducing premature deaths from tobacco, not the eradication of nicotine, which is not going to happen and is a misguided policy.”

Vape Moss

From the moment she appeared in our magazines, Kate Moss – the girl next door turned supermodel – has always been famed for carrying her trusty cigarettes everywhere she went. Some of her most iconic photographs, whether it’s editorial shoots or candid party pics, made the model notorious for her relationship with tobacco. However, on a recent afternoon stroll in London, the star was spotted holding a trusted cherry peach flavoured disposable vape, whilst walking alongside her daughter Lila. Now at age 49 and after over 30 years of smoking, here’s to hoping that Moss has stubbed the cigarettes out and is on track to become the ‘greatest vaper of all time’.

Previous Health Minister for France, Francois Braun, held a radical stance against vaping, a habit he deemed to be ‘extremely dangerous for the youth.’ Now, a shakeup has appointed Aurelien Rousseau as the new Minister… could this be a turning point for vaping policies in the country? With Rousseau’s close relationship to the Prime Minister - a known vaping advocate - it stirs questions about the potential softer shift in the government’s approach to e-cigarettes. However, there are controversies surrounding Rousseau as his wife acts as the deputy director of France’s National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM), suggesting a potential conflict of interest.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has launched a new campaign aimed at cracking down on rogue vape sales as well as supporting responsible retailers. A newly published Challenege25 will be handed out as part of an informative campaign to help retailers spot illicit vapes and challenge customers appearing to be underage. Details for noticing dodgy devices include: the number of puffs, the warning label, the manufacturer details and any other signs that look out of place. The ACS chief executive James Lowman said: “We are sending a clear message that having a robust Challenge25 policy is the best way for retailers and their colleagues to eliminate sales to underage customers.”

PREVENTION

Over CURE New vital reports stress the urgency of saving the lives of smokers, with stepby-step recommendations on how best to act in a public health crisis. Words: Grace Lynk

VM47 l 23

ction on Smoking and Heal th (ASH) have had their latest fact sheet printed in a recent Planetofthevapes Issue, summarising their f indings on e-cigarette usage amid adul ts in the UK. The data reveals behaviours, preferences, and estimates, including a statistic stating that as of this year, the population of e-cigarette users in the UK alone will be almost 5 million. According to their findings, the scale of people using vapes is at an all-time high of 9.1 percent, with over half the vaping population having used the tools to quit smoking. Although 4.7 million people are currently vaping in the UK, ASH reports that 1.7 million, equating to 37 percent, are still using traditional tobacco in addition to e-cigarettes. The biggest takeaway from the survey were the identified reasons as to why so many current smokers haven’t made the switch, with twenty percent saying they wouldn’t want to replace one addiction with another. Other reasons consisted of thirteen percent of the smoking population not believing that e-cigarettes would help them quit, and 8.4 percent being too uninformed about the safety of vapes. The report authors said: “There is an opportunity to make significant improvements to the health of our nation in just five to ten years, benefitting millions of people, society, our economy and health systems.” They continued with: “Our high level of premature, often avoidable ill health, damages lives, our society, localities, and our economy. Without resolute action it will get worse.” “We must act so that lives are not degraded, and to sustain our health services and labour supply.” 24 l VM47

A new report led by public services expert Lord Filkin, and flanked by the King’s Fund think tank, highlights suggestions that aim to do exactly that, including the prescription of vapes. The report states that a commitment to spend on preventative measures should be affordable, suggesting that 10p out of every £1 of the NHS budget would be enough to improve the nation’s health. Prescribing vaping devices to smokers would cut down cigarette consumption by three million people, though the report has warned that a clamp down on marketing and sales should accompany this. The experts narrowed down the public health priorities to nine areas with specific intervention suggestions for each area, including smoking, air quality, early detection of illness, and health inequalities. Of all these priority areas, the report acknowledges that more funding would be needed specifically to reduce the number of smokers in the UK, but suggests that the cost could be subsidised by the tobacco industry. Filkin’s report put forward the argument that the poor health of the nation currently costs the government up to £16bn a year, and so following their propositions would not only save lives, but money.

WE MUST ACT SO THAT LIVES ARE NOT DEGRADED, AND TO SUSTAIN OUR HEALTH SERVICES AND LABOUR SUPPLY.

MESSAGE RECEIVED

A new study – led by the London South Bank University (LSBU) – has delved into the success that text messages and advice on vape flavours could have on those trying to make the all-important switch. The team behind the ground-breaking research consisted of professors and medical doctors from various universities including University College London and the University of East Anglia.

28 l VM47

minutes of waking up. Researchers tested five remote interventions to help people quit, including advice comprising of tailored device selection, e-liquid nicotine strength and tailored e-liquid flavours, with brief information on relative harms and text message support. Offering the different groups various interventions whether including all methods, some, or none – permitted information in order to determine which combination was the most effective. Of the five interventions, the SMS and flavour advice approaches quickly proved to be the most effectual in aiding those trying to make the switch. Lynne Dawkins, a professor of nicotine and tobacco studies at LSBU was trusted to steer the study. She said:

Through social media, the researchers recruited 1,214 eligible participants, all of whom smoked heavily and were interested in trying to quit by using vapes.

“The simplicity of tailored support through flavour advice and supportive messages could have a huge impact in helping people lead smoke-free lives.”

The study participants were ‘highly nicotine dependant’ and on average, smoked 18 cigarettes a day – with 90 percent saying they would smoke within the first 30

The first phase of the SMS study involved contacting vapers and seeking their help in carefully crafting encouraging text messages to be sent to current smokers as incentive to quit.

“”

THE SIMPLICITY OF TAILORED SUPPORT THROUGH FLAVOUR ADVICE AND SUPPORTIVE MESSAGES COULD HAVE A HUGE IMPACT IN HELPING PEOPLE LEAD SMOKE-FREE LIVES.

The second step targeted 202 current smokers and asked them to rate the messages from the first phase in an online survey. Texts were ranked based on several categories, including whether they were interesting, inoffensive, positive or enthusiastic. Those ranking highest for understandability, clarity, and believability were then passed on to a group of vapers to begin formulating a final set of messages. During the third and last phase, the team behind the study sent the messages to 603 smokers as part of a randomised optimisation trial. After three months, the study concluded that a quarter of those who participated had quit, and a further 13 percent had reduced their cigarette consumption by more than half. Those who received help in choosing a vape flavour alongside supportive messages were 55 percent more likely to give up in three months than those who did not receive these services. According to the researchers, ‘70 percent of the participants who received the text messages found them useful.’

Interestingly, less than a third of the smokers in the study ‘wanted something that tasted like tobacco’, further demonstrating the importance of flavour options for adults trying to make the switch. Banning non-tobacco flavours would entail vapes losing their primary purpose of distracting and discouraging smokers from the taste of cigarettes, with many smokers in the study not wanting the reminder. After analysing the responses, a significant association was found between the simple text messages and quitting rates, demonstrating the effectiveness of the study. The authors of the study said: “Text messages are effective smoking cessation interventions. However, there is little research on text message interventions for people who smoke and wish to quit by switching to vaping.” Professor Dawkins also said: “We encourage researchers to use the present mobile phone text message programme and adapt it to target populations and relevant contexts; for instance, by considering the use of disposable vapes.”

Holding Our Breaths Advocates and brands across the UK are anxiously awaiting the results of an unprecedented disposable vape ban. Words: Emily Malia 32 l VM47

“WHERE BANS GO INTO EFFECT, SMOKING RISES. THE MISSION IS STOP SMOKING FIRST.” he worst may be just about to happen to current and ex-smokers across the UK as the threat of a disposable vape ban is looming. With deadly cigarettes still available behind counters, littering the floors of our public spaces and the tobacco industry continuing to make millions, it seems policy makers are oblivious to the much bigger issue at hand. The Daily Telegraph reported that the government is gearing up to ban single use vapes, after a series of calls from councils and campaigners to make the sales illegal on both health and environmental grounds. The Local Government Association (LGA) representing councils across the UK have jumped on the band wagon

claiming that it is ‘crucial’ a ban comes into force rapidly. Disposable devices have been a blessing for those wanting an easy access tool to make the switch from cigarettes, its accessibility and affordability allowed it to be the gateway device for smokers. Especially with smokers of the older generations, who may not have the knowledge or confidence to go straight into using an open pod system. The industry has adapted to ensure there are numerous ways to correctly dispose of the singleuse e-cigarettes through recycling schemes and packaging changes in order to reduce its environmental impact. Vapers are outraged by the possibility of a ban and so the community took to Twitter to contribute their thoughts on the matter. One user said: “I think the reduced amount of litter and plastic is great, but I also think if people want them, they’ll get them. “Realistically they’ll just be sold the same way cannabis is sold, by ‘some dodgy guy on the street’.” It’s undeniable that countries who embraced harm reduction products through sensible regulation can drastically reduce not only smoking, but death rates entirely. Another vaper added: “Facts: where bans go into effect, smoking rises. The mission is stop smoking first. Cigarettes will remain freely available. That’s what kills. “I can’t think of an easier way than to keep vapes on the market. Look at the stats…vapers and former smokers, get healthy.” Many experienced vapers have concerns about the remaining methods available for smokers to curb their cigarette addiction if vaping devices are removed from store shelves. Worrying whether the ban of fool-proof vapes will only take them back to square one with conventional cigarettes. An online advocate wrote: “Banning disposables is a bad idea, I know several ex-smokers who would not use anything else and would likely return to smoking. “It’s far better to encourage vendors to offer a recycling collection of old disposables.”

CLEANING UP THE COMMUNITY Words: Oliver Smith

Following countless concerns of fires and litter from plastic and e-waste, Totally Wicked and their local councils have teamed up for a new recycling scheme.

36 l VM47

Rugby league’s own St Helens Saints have announced a new partnership scheme with club sponsor Totally Wicked. Working alongside St Helens Council and Liverpool City Region (LCR) Strategic Waste Partnership to help deliver a public message concerning the safe disposal of e-cigarettes.

With Councillor Andy Bowden, Environmental Services & Climate Change at St Helens Borough Council, said: “We ask anyone who uses vaping products to dispose of them in a responsible and safe way using either local store takeback recycling service or take them to their local Household Waste Recycling Centre.

This vape recycling scheme is the first of its kind nationwide and will allow vapers the opportunity to drop off their used disposables in any Totally Wicked store across the UK.

This helps to keep our Town, clean and safe for all residents.”

Totally Wicked has been sponsoring the club for around ten years, with the stadium renamed the ‘Totally Wicked Stadium’ during the 2022 season. Marcus Saxton, chief executive of Totally Wicked and chairman of the Independent British Vape Trade Association, said: “As a responsible vaping brand, we recognise that it’s not enough to simply sell high-quality vaping products. “We must also take responsibility for the environmental impact of those products and work to minimise it as much as possible. “By providing a comprehensive recycling program for vapes, we’re taking concrete steps to reduce waste and promote sustainability within the vaping industry.” The focus of the message will be on the safe recycling of disposables, making unnecessary plastic waste a thing of the past in the Northwest area. With the public being properly informed on the correct disposal of vaping products, to look after the environment and prevent any dangers caused by possible fires. Rosie Barker, LCR Strategic Waste Partnership, Resources & Waste Partnership Manager, said: “Batteries are a hazard to our workers, our community and our environment. “If batteries, or electricals containing batteries, end up inside bins or waste collection lorries with other materials then they are crushed in the waste and recycling process. “This increases the chances that they could be punctured and self-combust, setting fire to dry and flammable waste and household recycling around them.” In total there are over 150 Totally Wicked stores nationwide, all of which offer recycling bins for you to drop off when you next pick up. However, if there is no store near where you live, Totally Wicked, St Helens Council and the LCR all urge individuals to find their closest Household Waste Recycling Centre and dispose of the devices correctly. GOING THE

Extra Mile This vape store chain is taking extra steps across the country to aid people in quitting cigarettes. Words: Emily Malia

40 l VM47

How can vape stores do more to ensure they’re having a positive impact on our communities, whilst helping people to make the switch? With concerns of child vaping rising, and illicit devices making their way into the UK, this vape store chain is taking a more ethical approach to selling e-cigarettes. Evapo is leading the way for vape stores when it comes to tackling underage vaping, and is committed to making the experience of switching a simple and safe one for its customers. The store owner, Andrej Kuttuf said: “As a company, we are totally committed to ending sales of vapes to anyone under 18. “And all our stores operate a policy where staff will ask for proof of age if someone looks under 25. I have lobbied parliament on this. “We want all vape retailers to be properly regulated, which will lead to much tougher sanctions for anyone caught selling products illegally.” However, their mission to create a positive impact on the vaping community doesn’t stop there, as Evapo is also dedicated to arming its customers with the best advice they can get. Most of its staff are qualified NHS stop-smoking advisors in order to ensure they can provide the most informative service whilst remaining friendly, non-judgmental, and encouraging to smokers.

WE WANT ALL VAPE RETAILERS TO BE PROPERLY REGULATED, WHICH WILL LEAD TO MUCH TOUGHER SANCTIONS FOR ANYONE CAUGHT SELLING PRODUCTS ILLEGALLY. Their role is to use their skills to support and motivate those setting out on their quitting journeys, and with their specialist training, they hope to increase visitors’ chances of quitting for good. Alongside their efforts to create an encouraging, childfree space, the store owner is keen to have a positive impact on the environment, offering a recycling service inside for the correct disposal of single-use vapes. Its store blog states: “As veterans of the vaping industry, we have made it a priority to ensure that environmental sustainability is a consideration in everything that we do… “With the hope that we can set an example for the rest of the industry to follow. “In a bid to do our bit in preventing waste plastic from reaching our oceans, and to help ensure as much of it is recycled and reused as possible, we have collaborated with CleanHub. “We have committed to recovering 12.5 tonnes of plastic waste and are already 12 percent towards our goal with 1.6 tonnes recovered so far!” The chain – with over 40 stores - recently hit the papers with its latest store opening as it expands its mission to the South West, over in Exeter. Let’s hope Evapo’s extra steps to help smokers quit becomes the new normal for all vape stores as it continues to set a great example for both the industry and new communities. VM47 l 41

With new and exciting technologies on the horizon, Innokin are on a mission to enhance the vaping experience by making it more personal than ever. Words: Hannah Rhodes 44 l VM47

ith Innokin’s products sold in over 80 countries, how has branching out into different markets changed the company’s business strategy and marketing? “Over the years we have learned that each region has unique tastes and challenges. “While one market may favour compact pod systems, other markets may prefer traditional penstyle devices, or even larger advanced mods. “Our strategy is to work closely with local distributors, retailers, consumers and designers to get a sense of market trends and then tailor our product development process accordingly. “For example, we are currently consulting with a Korean designer to help localise products for that region. “We try to remain agile so we can serve markets with their preferred products, while maintaining our focus on supporting existing products for years after their original release. “Doing this makes sure the entire supply chain remains confident that their favoured products will not become obsolete.” Out of all the ranges Innokin supplies to consumers, which products have stood out in terms of reliability and popularity? “First is the Endura series, which launched more than eight years ago. It’s still fully supported, with the latest iterations including the T18 X and T22 Pro. “The Endura series offers new vapers simple, reliable and affordable devices that are precisely tuned to emulate the experience of smoking. “The Prism coil series used by these devices is stocked at almost every specialist vape shop in the world, which makes them highly accessible. “Another best-selling line is the much broader Z-coil series of devices – ranging from entry-level devices like the Go Z, all the way up to our most advanced premium kits like the Coolfire Z60. “This line offers customers the ability to experiment with different styles of vaping, from low-wattage MTL, up to medium-wattage RDL. “The latest addition to our offerings is the Klypse line – designed to be convenient, user-friendly and affordable, giving customers a low-cost entry point to the Innokin family of products.

“With modern pocket-friendly designs and a range of refillable and pre-filled pod options, the Klypse line is fully cross-compatible.” Innokin has a plethora of innovative designs and technologies from the Z-Coil to water-based vaping – why is it important for vapers to have a variety to choose from? “Every transitioning smoker has a different story and will require slightly different attributes from their vaping device to have a great experience. “We developed water-based vaping in partnership with Aquios Labs to solve an all-too-common pain point with traditional vaping products. “Many first-time vapers find vaping to be harsh – water-based vaping solves this issue with smoother vapour, faster nicotine delivery and reduced dehydration. “We believe offering variety and presenting it in a simple way allows our customers to easily find a satisfying vaping experience. “Ultimately, if a vaping experience does not satisfy a transitioning smoker, they are more likely to return to combustible tobacco and we do everything we can to avoid this by providing a truly personalised experience.” One of Innokin’s latest technological launches – conductive ceramic coils – ensures to ‘produce purer flavour’, what makes this possible? “Our latest breakthrough, MeFree, is the world’s first metal-free conductive ceramic coil. “Ceramic coils have been an important part of vaping technology for several years, particularly in the closed/pre-filled pod category. “But these ceramic coils are utilizing ceramic only as wicking material to bring e-liquid to the heating elements, which are metal fixed to the ceramic to generate heat. “Due to the nature of metal, it’s incredibly hard to control the temperature of all parts of that heating element, which leads to inconsistent performance and the potential for overheating, including hot spots. “MeFree blends non-metallic components with ceramic. This results in stable resistance, uniform heating, and the elimination of any chance of heavy metals being released from the coil. “Conductive ceramic coils maintain their integrity when exposed to flavourings, unlike metal heating elements, which can lead to impure taste due to the high reactivity of flavourings with metals. “Our testing shows that MeFree produces purer vapour, much greater stability, even heating and a VM47 l 45

larger surface area. “This results in a more flavourful and pleasant vaping experience for customers. MeFree’s innovation has already been recognised at the Global Tobacco & Nicotine Forum (GTNF) with the ‘Golden Leaf Award for Innovation. Can Innokin consumers expect any new and exciting projects in the near future? “This is a truly exciting time for Innokin, several of our projects have come to fruition around the same time, and this means lots of new products! “First is MeFree, which we discussed in the previous question. Customers can expect to see MeFree implemented into several new products soon. Second is Electronic-cigarette Balance System Technology (EBST). EBST is a totally new coil design that allows for faster wicking, constant saturation of the coil, greater coil longevity and enhanced flavour. This is achieved with an innovative new design that provides an independent air exchange pathway within the coil as well as a multi-layered wicking design. Customers can also expect to experience EBST coil technology in a wide range of products.

The UKVIA also welcomes the government’s announcement to strengthen enforcement activity by investing £30M to allow Border Force, Trading Standards and HMRC to ‘tackle the import of illicit tobacco and vaping products at the border’ – another initiative the UKVIA has urged the government to introduce for years now. We also want on the spot fines of £10,000 for those selling vapes to children or illicit or illegal products to people of any age and a vape licensing scheme to fund the ongoing enforcement activity is needed to ensure that retailers remain on the right side of the law.

UKVIA FORUM Words: John Dunne, Director General, UKVIA

s I write this column, I am heading back from the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester where there had been intense media speculation about vaping and trains in the run up to the event. Rumours that the Prime Minister would axe the northern leg of the HS2 high-speed rail line turned out to be true. However, speculation that he would also use his Conference address to announce a ban on single-use (disposable) vapes were (as my sources confidently predicted) totally false.

The issues arising from the Prime Minister’s Conference address, and more, will be discussed at our annual Forum which takes place on Friday November 10 at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in London. We have an amazing lineup of speakers and the Forum is followed by our annual Industry Recognition Awards which, this year, has 16 categories (up from 10 last year) and a 16-strong independent judging panel. The Forum is one of the key events in the UK’s vaping calendar and attracts delegates from a wide cross section of industries. For example, last year there were senior executives from the vaping industry together with MPs, government advisors, public health professionals, regulators, enforcement organisations, think tanks, researchers, product and service providers and the investment community. There are currently a limited number of tickets available for both the Forum and the Awards Dinner and you can book tickets via our website at https://www.ukvia.co.uk/forum2023/

Rishi Sunak did take the opportunity to propose a New Zealand-style plan to create a ‘smokefree generation’ by ending cigarette sales to those born on or after January 1, 2029.

I would also like to thank our Headline Sponsor Chubby Gorilla, together with all of our sponsors and event partners for their support in helping us make the Forum and Awards Dinner the industry event of the year.

VAPING CONSULTATION

GLOBAL VAPE ALLIANCE

The PM also announced a consultation on restricting disposable vapes and regulating both flavours and packaging to reduce youth uptake.

And finally, I am delighted that the UKVIA is part of the new Global Vape Alliance which has been set up to effect responsible and positive change on a global scale.

The UKVIA has long called for the MHRA to be able to examine product design and packaging as part of the approvals process, so this is a step in the right direction. We are very concerned about talk of restricting flavours as a wide range of flavours are vital to give vapers the variety they need to prevent them returning to cigarettes.

The Global Vape Alliance brings together four major international vaping bodies: the Electronic Cigarette Industry Committee of the China Electronics Chamber of Commerce (ECCC), the US Vapor Technology Association (VTA), the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) and the Independent European Vape Alliance (IEVA). “THERE’S SO MUCH STUFF THAT PEOPLE CLASS AS RUBBISH, WHEN ACTUALLY YOU’VE GOT THESE BEAUTIFUL PRECIOUS MATERIALS THAT YOU CAN CREATE SOMETHING OUT OF AGAIN.” The environmental impact of e-waste has been raising red flags across the globe for decades and with time running out, multidisciplinary creative studio Lazerian have stepped up to the mark. Born from the mind of Liam Hopkins, Lazerian specialises in artwork that facilitates in-depth conversations about current hot topics and spots opportunities to challenge the norm whilst also problem solving. The Manchester based company recently made a pitstop at Envision Racing, where they joined forces to create an unexpected, yet welcomed, landmark for both teams - sparking some much-needed attention on the issue. The challenge was daring, yet simple: to construct a full-scale Gen3 race car using only electrical waste that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. Made entirely from everyday devices such as radios, mobile phones and disposable vapes, the operational ‘Recover E’ is quite a sight to behold. Lazerian hopes to encourage a future where ‘discarded electronic

52 l VM47

waste finds new life as the beating heart of cutting-edge mobility’ with this revolutionary invention. Liam Hopkins said: “The amount of electronic waste that we produce is just staggering. We're on track for 75 million tons annually… people just don't know what to do with it. “There’s so much stuff that people class as rubbish, when actually you've got these beautiful precious materials that you can create something out of again.” With enough e-waste to transform into a race car, Liam Hopkins turned to The Engineering Initiative Society based at The University of Manchester for help. Having recently launched an exciting new ‘Vape Bin’ project of their own, Tami Coker – the president of the society – happily donated hundreds of disposables to the cause.

Flashforward to inside the workshop, and Liam had begun the painstaking process of dismantling and unveiling the intricate world of wires and batteries that lay hidden inside of single- use vapes. These once discarded pieces of ‘trash’ were now united for the project, creating the perfect harmony between technology and sustainability - a figurehead for the rest of the industry. Lazerian’s ‘Recover E’ project only just scratches the surface for the potential impact that environmental projects could have when dealing with these issues on a bigger scale. Unfortunately, it seems that regardless of the benefits vapes have on public health, advocates in favour of the cessation tool see no end in sight for the battle against misinformation.

The founder of Lazerian said: “There's all this talk about people trying to ban them… but that's not always an answer… you solve a problem rather than creating a problem.”

“This doesn’t diminish the carbon footprint created when manufacturing these products, it’s not going to solve anything, it's just masking a problem.”

Disposable bins, collection campaigns and providing more indepth recycling information are just a handful of current actions being taken, aimed at attacking this fastevolving environmental problem.

“For me, the design of these things is so important: use the right materials and make it more accessible for people to take it apart.”

However, the question remains… should more be done to address the root of the problem, specifically from a vape design standpoint? Hopkins continued: “So many companies now design something, and then see the sustainability side as a marketing aspect, or ‘oh we'll plant a tree’..

Regardless of these forward-thinking efforts, the gap in the market is still a large one to fill, which can ultimately tarnish the reputation that vaping has for its numerous health benefits. Creations such as the ‘Recover E' are imperative in refuelling the fight for sustainability through collaborations and efforts between unlikely allies.

YOU

African’t

VAPE HERE The proposed tobacco bill in South Africa has encouraged a wave of backlash, with many citizens concerned about prohibition, price increases, and even imprisonment. Words: Grace Lynk 56 l VM47

“IF YOU SELL TOBACCO, VAPES OR RELATED PRODUCTS VIA COURIER AND DELIVERY, YOU CAN BE JAILED FOR 15 YEARS? DOES THAT SOUND FAIR?” new bill in South Africa, titled the Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill, will see massive changes implemented across the country, including laws impacting those who vape. Prohibitions and regulations will mean that any tobacco or vape products will no longer be displayed in retail settings, with speciality tobacco stores also included in this rule. The newly tabled tobacco bill will also anticipate a huge increase on the price of cigarettes and nicotine-substitute solutions, essentially raising the cost of nicotine in general. The bad news doesn’t stop there, with a new sin tax, or a tax on ‘harmful’ commodities, being employed in June, resulting in all nicotine products being included in the tax net. Obviously, as is the way of vaping advocates passionate enough to defend the cessation products, there has been a wave of backlash targeted at the government for even suggesting prohibition. Following a portfolio committee briefing on the bill, members of the public have expressed concerns about the damaging consequences of lumping electronic delivery systems in with traditional tobacco.

These individuals are not the only people affronted by the bill, with a survey comprising input from tobacconists and small businesses across South Africa revealing an overwhelming opposition to the changes. The survey, which included 1769 stores with a collective 3194 employees, found that 98 percent of respondents from small operations around the country disagree heavily with the display ban. With almost 100 percent of all those asked in opposition, it comes as no surprise that three-quarters of respondents are anxious that the bill will criminalise hard-working and legal businesses. Alex Jacovides of brand distributor Clippa Sales said: “Bans do not work. Government should have learnt this hard lesson during the COVID-19 tobacco ban, but obviously it did not.” Although the bill will likely amount in prohibition, the main concern for many is the severe penalties for potential defiance, with a proposed punishment of ten year’s imprisonment. This sentencing is not even exclusive to outrageous cases, with South Africans at risk of going to prison for so much as displaying a single packet of cigarettes over the counter. Naturally, those with even a scrap of empathy, are appalled by this news, with many flocking to social media to express just how inhumane this punishment is for such a small ‘crime’. One Twitter user said: “If you sell tobacco, vapes or related products via courier and delivery, you can be jailed for 15 years? Does that sound fair?” Another user said: “This has to be some kind of joke. I just came across the new tobacco bill that they want to pass in our country. Surely we have more serious crimes?”

Tshepo Ranko, a vaping advocate on Twitter, said: “I understand that the government is looking to curb smoking, but this Tobacco Bill doesn’t make sense. “They’re extending these restrictions to hookahs and vaping. #StopTheTobaccoBill, because there’s absolutely NO WAY!” In support of this sentiment, Dr. Kgosi Letlape has said: “ The government must understand that it is unethical to withhold information on tobacco harm reduction products from smokers that can reduce the damage wreaked by cigarettes.” Letlapes’ main worry as the president of the African Harm Reduction Alliance is that the Bill seeks to ostracise nicotine users, including vapers who have chosen a much safter alternative over cigarettes.

QLabs is on a mission to provide both fellow vapers and those beginning their quitting journey with high impact products and flavours.

Words: Hannah Rhodes

60 l VM47

What does QLabs excel in? What is setting it apart from the rest of its competitors? “Our approach is more than just business, it’s a finely crafted art. “We recognise the intimacy of understanding what equips us to deliver exceptional quality, consistently. “Alongside the ability to delve deep into the heart of the market, we are able to embrace nuances of our customers and passionately engage with our products. “We’re cultivating experiences of the highest calibre and actually producing what customers want and need.”

When creating a new flavour for your QSalt range, describe the planning that goes into the development before it is ready for sale? “Our main aim is to ensure our customers don’t return to smoking, so their needs and wants are a priority to create products which give them the highest sucess rate of quitting as possible. “We researched what customers are interested in to begin selecting a device to model these flavours around, this way ensuring satisfaction when using the QOne device. “Whilst taking inspiration from other industries and nature itself, we started to blend these indulgent flavours. “With a few secret touches, what we resulted in was the ‘Unreal Flavour’, simultaneously providing vapers with extended coil life without them losing sweetness. “Once we’re happy with a flavour, we move onto finetuning and testing by a panel. Finally upon being tweaked to the finest level, we achieve the perfect balance. “Ensuring we’re creating healthier habits, we offer the QSalts in five, ten and twenty milligram variants, thus benefiting consumers’ nicotine control and cravings, whilst simultaneously experiencing that intense flavour.”

‘Experience unreal flavour’ is at the forefront of the QSalt range. Why are your flavours so crucial to your identity? “We take inspiration from not only leading and popular flavours, but from anything around us.

“The flavours are crucial as they were designed around what vapers need, such as secret touches to extend coil life rather than ruin them. “Our QSalts range provides that intense flavour of a disposable but with five times more e-liquid. “Not only is this going to save customers money, but it also eradicates some of the issues with disposables - for example, environmental impact.”

The QONE was designed to elevate and provide a user-friendly vaping experience, how so? “The QOne was designed with convenience of mind, allowing our customers to spend less time fiddling around with often chunky devices. “Although it is constructed out of metal, the device only weighs 48 grams, making ‘clunkiness’ a thing of the past with the QOne. “Whether they’re drawn to devices which are draw activated or button firing, the QOne has both functionalities for all vaping wants and needs, including a magnetic pod connection. “Boasting a powerful, colour-coded LED 1000mAh battery and a quick charge function, users can simply plug in their QOne device for an hour or so and they’ve got all the power they need. “Offering a three-mode adjustable airflow, consumers are also provided with the tailored experience they need. Available in 0.6Ohm, 0.8Ohm and 1.2Ohm, the QOne Pods are suitable for all and are easy to refill. “Furthermore, for those new to the QOne device, we provide a link to a set up video to make switching to our device just that bit easier.”

What has been one of the standout moments for QOne and QSalts in the industry? “There’s been a few moments for us that we would class as being monumental during our QOne and QSalts launches. “Our QOne devices sold out during the first week of their release and we’ve also just launched the second wave of our QSalts flavours, “We’ve also just released two brand new colourways for the QOne devices – including Black/Red and Aqua/Silver. “Alongside this, we have received an overwhelming amount of support and amazing reviews since the launch.”

VM47 l 69 INNOVATION IN VAPING

VA P E The disturbing designs on cigarette packets have failed time and time again to deter smokers, which begs the question… could a packaging revamp help break the cycle? Words: Emily Malia he UK introduced standardised cigarette packaging back in 2016 in an attempt to stop the glitzy branding from appealing to minors, all while providing matter of fact information for those addicted. As a result, the harsh reality of ‘smoking kills’ or ‘smoking clogs your arteries’ - and other scaremongering facts – are printed on every cigarette packet in the country alongside grotesque pictures. These images showcase the horrors that smoking can have on your body, but is yet to prove useful in deterring smokers from reaching for their next pack, day in day out.

70 l VM47

In the wake of Canada’s new design launch of labelling each individual cigarette with warnings, Vapouround considered what alternative words could give smokers further guidance and support as opposed to fear inducing tactics. It aims to help those addicted to consider a cessation tool that will help them say goodbye to tobacco for good, as opposed to expecting people to go cold turkey without a quitting tool. With millions of people still smoking in the UK, both industries need to join forces to reimagine what current cigarette brands are displaying, and how we can deter adults from reaching for them.

PULLING OUT THE

The Department of Health and Social Care are back and better than ever, providing solutions and quitting advice to current smokers through the awaited return of Stoptober. Words: Grace Lynk 72 l VM47

Well, it’s good news for tobacco users tired of chattering teeth and numb f ingers as the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) announced the return of Stoptober this year. The national campaign was launched in 2012 to support smokers on their quitting journeys, providing evidence that smokers are f ive times more likely to quit if they make it to 28 days smoke-f ree. The DHSC elaborated: “Since its inception, Stoptober has successfully helped 2.5 million smokers to make a quit attempt and has become a well-recognised annual event in the public health calendar.” The biggest driving force in helping people quit comes in the form of an e-cigarette, with the yearly event actively encouraging smokers to make the switch to vaping. This sentiment has been carried over the course of the campaign’s history, especially this year following the government funded ‘Swap to Stop’ campaign launched in the UK. Scientif ic information and research-based evidence are offered by the health service for any smokers who have accepted misinformation or have an overall lack of knowledge on vaping. The campaign states: “We are developing some new assets, including a leaflet, poster and social media posts which provide facts about vaping and how swapping to a vape can help you quit smoking.” The myth busting websites are easily accessible to anybody who has internet, with websites such as ‘The Better Health Quit Smoking’ and the ‘NHS Quit Smoking’ app ready to download. The f ree instalment allows people to track their quitting progress, monitor how much money has been saved f rom not spending on cigarettes and providing daily support to anybody struggling. Better Health Quit Smoking have also dedicated a segment of their website to tips on how to switch to vaping, stressing the importance of talking to others who have already made the life-saving adjustment. Other bits of advice involve choosing the right e-cigarette kit, using a vape as regularly as necessary in individual cases and applying

WHILE SMOKING RATES HAVE DECLINED IN RECENT YEARS, OVER FIVE MILLION PEOPLE IN ENGLAND STILL SMOKE AND IT REMAINS THE SINGLE BIGGEST CAUSE OF PREVENTABLE ILLNESS AND DEATH. nicotine patches for extra support along the way.

Of course, the campaign is taking precautions, rolling out a simultaneous scheme aimed at school children to double down on the well-known, but regularly ignored fact that vaping is intended for adults. These provisions aim to protect children, while not discouraging smokers f rom making a decision that could impact their health for the better over the course of their lives. The DHSC said: “While smoking rates have declined in recent years, over f ive million people in England still smoke and it remains the single biggest cause of preventable illness and death.” “We aim to launch Stoptober around the September 20 to give smokers time to prepare for their quit attempt f rom October 1.” It comes as no surprise that Stoptober is so successful when, on a yearly basis, smokers are welcomed by a community of millions, all of whom exist as proof that quitting is possible.

RECY CLER OF THE DAY

“WE ARE THE ONLY VENDOR LOCALLY THAT OFFERS THIS PROGRAM CURRENTLY, A FACT WE ARE VERY PROUD OF.” 76 l VM47

WITH DISPOSABLE BANS EMERGING, THIS FLORIDA STORE IS COMMITTED TO DOING THEIR BIT TO RECYCLE, ONE VAPE AT A TIME - DAY IN DAY OUT! Words: Emily Malia s the conversation around the industry’s impact on the environment is ever-growing, with disposable bans looming and the littering of single use vapes, it’s important to look at ways to prevent further waste.

Whether it’s internal batteries or single use vapes, E-Cig Source welcomes fellow vapers to drop off as many recyclable items as they wish, in order to encourage users to dispose of their devices correctly. In an attempt to incentivise its customers to recycle their devices, the store set up a helpful scheme that goes beyond just collecting used vapes. Customers bring their devices into store and receive a special token worth one dollar that they can chose to spend or save up and use in a lump sum. Peggy Whitmore, Owner of E-Cig Source said: “We are the only vendor locally that offers this program currently, a fact we are very proud of. “Recycling is a process we do daily…multiple times a day actually!” However, it was their social media posts that caught Vapouround’s eye, seeing their ‘recycler of the day’ photographs of those visiting the store to do their part. She said: “The recycler of the day program is newer. We encourage our customers to get their recycling from anywhere. We have no restrictions with regards to where they come from. “Some customers will get them from the beach or the ground when they’re out and some have even started putting buckets up at their place of employment.” It was clear this had a large effect on their local vaping community when one vaper brought in an impressive 206 disposable vapes, all at once. Making them, the recycler of the day!

One store has dedicated it’s time to changing the narrative of the vaping community, and proving that if recycled efficiently, disposable vapes can still play a vital role for ex-smokers.

E-Cig Source have made it their mission to provide DeLand, Florida with a tobacco free zone that provides both resources and education surrounding making the switch to a less harmful alternative.

It did not take E-cig Source long to recognise the effect that single-use vapes were having during their rise in recent years and with that, the scheme was born.

With numerous negative stories surfacing online about vape waste, it’s refreshing to see a store celebrating its own - and its vapers - hard work to reduce litter.

From afar, it’s obvious that this business is keen to invent new ways to involve its shoppers into their own vaping community.

As the details of ‘recycler of the day’ are still evolving, we can expect to see more posts highlighting these proud customers, committed to the cause.

In their virtual store tour, a collage of papers stating how long vapers smoked for and what helped them quit covers the wall, as well as having ‘E-cig Source’ branded merchandise available to buy. The DeLand store has altered its priorities alongside with the rise in disposables and decided to focus on providing customers with a go-to drop off point. VM47 l 77

hether it’s working alongside other companies to fight state bans, accepting speaking opportunities to inform the public or providing state representatives with information, this advocate is doing all she can.

Allivapes’ is a recognisable name across the online vaping community and familiar face from the Wednesday Night Live Show but, who is the woman behind the advocacy? At just 15 year’s old, Allison Boughner began recreationally smoking and started trying to kick the habit throughout her 20’s, constantly going back and forth with the idea. It wasn’t until she reached 30, that it was time to face the music when Alli – now a mother of one – was diagnosed with a blood clot in her leg. 78 l VM47

Reflecting on that time, she said: “Most 30-yearolds do not suffer from DVT and knowing my life choice of continuing to smoke. “Even after I quit through my whole pregnancy, it was something I could no longer ignore. I took hematologist’s advice, tried patches, gum and even prescription drugs to help me quit for good.” Of course, these trials of countless alternatives didn’t work and after some tough life changes, including a drastic move to South Carolina, Alli gave up on trying to quit smoking.

A health scare turned into a decision that changed the course of this vaping advocate’s life forever, it seems vaping helped her so that she could help others.

from public health across the U.S.

I THINK WE HAVE SOME TRYING TIMES AHEAD OF US BUT IN THE END I HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT SCIENCE WILL WIN.

Alli explained: “I couldn’t believe this powerful technology that finally got me off cigarettes - when all other options failed – was being portrayed in such a negative way. She said: “Somehow the stress of life made me forget that lesson I learned a year prior, lying in a hospital bed.” The advocate was faced with more issues when she learned that cigarettes were a hell of a lot cheaper in her new state and so inevitably, she smoked more. The intrigue strook when her bosses began to sell e-cigarettes to aid in kicking the bad habit and so she was handed a disposable tank with 18mg. Allison explained: “I was blown away; right then without realising it, I was done with cigarettes… “A few days into my vaping journey my battery died at the bar and as I went outside to light up, I took one puff and was disgusted by the taste.” That was it - she never smoked again. For Allison, it truly was that easy, which was shocking for her, considering her struggles to quit in the past.

“We owe it to every single smoker to speak out against health misinformation; they deserve accurate and positive information on the health benefits of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool.” Now, Allison Boughner is the Vice President of South Carolina Vapor Association and podcast co-host, where they talk about advocacy and current issues along with her work on local bills with the SCVA. Alongside this work, she writes blog posts for the World Vaper’s Alliance, keeping people up to date with current issues in order to get as many people involved as possible. Despite all of the effort Alli puts into her advocacy, like most people, there are the personal stories that stick with her the longest and mean the most. According to her, in a community full of helpful

people there are ‘standout moments all of the time’ but a certain memory always resurfaces as a defining moment. One day, when a customer came in on suggestion of her doctor – as her smoking habit was harming her health – Allison assisted her in switching to a device and flavour she loved. The advocate stated: “She came in from her most recent appointment and around the corner with tears in her eyes, hugged me and thanked me for saving her life. “It turns out her results changed dramatically for the better. I will never forget that experience and how it made me feel like I was helping people.” This interaction still fuels Alli today and for every single person she reaches that decides to give making the switch a try, makes it all worth it. She said: “In a perfect world, public health will admit that vaping truly is safer, and they will start to approve products that adults depend on. “I think we have some trying times ahead of us but in the end I have to believe that science will win.”

As she set out on her own vaping journey, Allison soon discovered that there was more to the community than she initially imagined and the more Ali learned, the more passionate she became. The desire to involve herself in advocacy for vaping stemmed from the misinformation coming VM47 l 79

AK82 COILS Here we highlight some of the stars of Instagram who are using the social media platform to create original art with a vaping twist.

Interview by: Hannah Rhodes Name: Adolph Kordahy Location: Saudi Arabia Instagram page: @ak82.coils VM47 l 81

How long have you been vaping for and how did you start? “I started vaping back in 2015, with an ego style pen mod, which quickly escalated to variable mods and tanks within a month or two. “Then I kind of lost track of things and went through almost all variants and styles of mods, RDAs, RTAs and so on.”

How did your coil building journey begin? “Well, I began exploring the world of coils in early 2016 as I was fed up with the inconsistences with OCC coils back then. “In the beginning, as most people within this industry, I started off creating simple round builds. “Since my knowledge of building coils was very limited, I researched into

tutorials on how to build specific RTAS and RDAS. “The biggest turning point was when I stumbled across Squidoodes’ YouTube page and his tutorials on exotic builds – I was instantly hooked! “The idea of crafting and manipulating the wires into different shapes and combinations was very intriguing to me.”

Have you encountered any challenges during your time creating coil art? “My main challenge is getting and buying my wires as the best brands for wires are based in the US, and because my orders are large, shipping can be extremely costly.”

Is there anything in particular that motivates or inspires your work? “What keeps me in coil building is the fact that when I sit at my station and start spinning, I completely forget everything going on around me. “I’m able to completely relax for a couple of hours and think of nothing but the wire in front of me…I go into an almost mediative state of mind. “Another part that keeps me so motivated to continue building, is seeing my coils both online and in

82 l VM47

store within retailers across the world. “Since joining the community, I have been welcomed by people from all walks of life and now have friends and acquaintances from many different countries who all share the same passion.”

Do you only build coils for yourself as a hobby or for others too? “At first, it was something I did for myself. But after having a few close friends around me that vaped, I started building personalised coils for them. “They were the ones that pushed me into developing a brand and style and ultimately starting to sell commercially.”

Are you currently working on anything new at the moment? “I am! I’m currently working on two projects:

“My own E-juice line, which if all goes well, should be ready for distribution by the end of this year. Secondly, I’m very excited to reveal that I am in the process of planning to open a physical vape shop cafe in the Philippines. “My main goal for the shop is for it to be a gathering place for vapers to connect as well as an opportunity to introduce current smokers to a less harmful alternative. “The shop is an amazing foundation to physically interact with likeminded people and help them in finding a style that suits their individual needs. “For me, this next step would aid me in expanding my reach within the industry and gain more independence… hopefully this adventure will also one day evolve into a family business.”

ALL RAVING NO VAPING Make sure to read the small print on the line-ups of the UK’s favourite festivals, as it is highly likely that ‘disposable vapes’ will no longer be headlining. Words: Grace Lynk

VM47 l 85

Come rain or shine, it feels as though nothing can dampen that palpable excitement each year when festival season rolls around… unless your disposable vape is conf iscated upon entry that is. Unfortunately for many people embarking on their intimidating quitting journey, several big festivals have elected to ban single-use vapes in order to reduce the non-recyclable waste left behind annually. Although a good step for decreasing environmental pollution, it will leave many festival goers relying on their devices high, dry, and desperate for a f ruity nicotine hit when awaiting their favourite artists. Glastonbury was the f irst big-name festival to add disposables to a list of prohibited items this year, alongside knives, gazebos, and non-biodegradable body glitter – an eclectic range to say the least. With over 200,000 revellers in attendance at the festival in late June, and with disposables being small enough to hide, it’s hard to imagine how such a drastic change was effectively enforced. Alas, the Glastonbury Instagram page says: “In a determined drive to reduce

86 l VM47

non-recyclable waste and promote more sustainable alternatives, the sale of singleuse vapes will be banned on site.” Although a challenging amendment to impose, imagining the rolling f ields of Glastonbury unaffected by a sea of rainbow disposables has been a welcome change to many people attending. One grateful user took to Instagram to say: “So so glad to see disposable vapes are not going to be sold on site! Well done Glastonbury.” This sentiment has not been shared among attendees of other festivals, with many people holding tickets to Reading and Leeds responding negatively to the festival following in Glastonbury’s footsteps. Instagram users have jumped at the opportunity to accuse Reading and Leeds of hypocrisy, reminding the festival in the comment section that e-cigarette stalls once sold products at the event. Also, back in 2021, ‘Made in Leeds’ partnered with NZO vape, advertising an exclusive offer on disposable vapes as encouragement for people to stock up in time for Leeds Festival. The advertisement stated, ‘Get Festival Ready with this pocket f riendly device to take with you on the go!’, with directions labelled clearly as to where festival goers could f ind the offer. Although ref illable vapes are still permitted, responses on social media have been adverse, with one user saying: “Sorry, but why are they coming out with all these ridiculous restrictions at the last minute?” Other festival goers see the new regulation as more than a restriction, with one concerned user saying: “All this is going to do is make vapes a black-market product inside the festivals.”

ALL THIS IS GOING TO DO IS MAKE VAPES A BLACKMARKET PRODUCT INSIDE THE FESTIVALS

The underlying theme of these changes at Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds is sustainability, with the dominant aim being to prevent further pollution and potential hazards at waste centres around the UK. Countrywide schemes are also underway, with many organisations across Wales and Ireland urging for a ban on disposables to be implemented at festivals and other organised pop-up events. Keep Wales Tidy (KWT), an environmental charity in Wales, would welcome a ban in light of many local authorities across the country calling for prohibition on all disposable products by 2024. Owen Derbyshire, Chief Executive of KWT, said: “One thing I’d really welcome is if organisations and festivals consider banning single-use vapes”…an opinion shared by the Irish Government. The sale of vapes and other tobacco inhalants will be banned at music festivals in Ireland under the government’s new law to clamp down on the rising popularity of disposables among teenagers. With sustainability at the foref ront of these bans, it might be hard for some vapers to wrap their heads around why alternative recycling options aren’t being offered, such as vape bins on site. But following a recent e-cigarette spiking incident at the Isle of Wight Festival, it is becoming increasingly obvious that a greener future for the planet is not the sole reason behind the bans. However, despite festival season drawing to a close, it’s best to stay vigilant and look out for new rules, of which there will likely be an influx following the trendsetting bans this year.

Following Ordóñez’s appointment, Vapouround asked how has it been settling into the ANDS culture, and as Managing Director for Europe, what are the top priorities right now? “Well, there is a unique opportunity in the UK, for a company like ANDS, it is a large market, but also a market where regulation is actually friendly towards the achievement of these smokeless objectives through vaping. “So that is an opportunity that we want to capitalise on, as well as fuelling the growth of a company who wants to take a share of the illegal market, helping the UK and the rest of Europe achieve their smokeless targets but doing so in a responsible and compliant way. “This is a company that’s here to stay in the long term. And in the long run sustainability depends on your ability to be compliant, act responsibly and meet standards, both from society and from regulators.” Environmental obligations, product quality and preventing youth access are all very much key focus points for the industry right now. Ordóñez delved into how her extensive legal background could help ANDS maintain its already compliant and responsible approach.

Vapouround asked the new European MD if there were

96 l VM47

any plans to launch more environmentally conscious products down the line? Or perhaps to improve the recyclability of the SLIX further? “SLIX are already highly recyclable and reusable…so we meet both standards in a significant way. “But we do plan to extend the line of SLIX products we have on the roster, with a number of initiatives to increase the recyclability and reusability. “ANDS are developing new versions of SLIX that we plan to bring into the UK market as soon as possible, with hopes to go from our current 99.2 percent as close to 100 percent as the team can. “Maybe the hopes of 100 percent might not be achievable in the short term…but that’s our objective.” The SLIX range has already seen great success in UK, partnering with supermarket giants Morrisons in over 1,500 stores. When asked about the positives of this new move, Ordóñez said: “Being present in supermarkets such as Morrison’s gives us the opportunity to reach a much wider audience of adult smokers. “As well as also giving us the ability to provide more information about our recycling programme to these adult users. “The clearer you can communicate to people on how to achieve and contribute to recycling objectives, the better off we will be.” Vapouround then asked about the key challenges of this market and on how ANDS fits into the existing European, and

specifically, the UK sectors, Ordonez stated: “The environmental challenge, is certainly very important and needs to be tackled. “There is no single answer for the youth access issue… everybody needs to play a role in enforcement. “There is no point in having regulation, which does not get enforced, but you also need awareness from retailers, along with a commitment from them too. “Only those that are willing to invest in compliance and invest in environmentally friendly solutions will remain in the market.” In recent months, ANDS has also seen great success in the largely untapped travel retail arena. Vapouorund asked how ANDS plan on capitalising on this multi-billion-pound market further and how the greater availability of vaping products in duty-free will benefit smokers.

capable of capitalising on the fabulous success that the team in the Middle East have had. “And with travellers spending time in airports and addressing their needs, we can hopefully replicate those successful strategies for duty free in Europe.” Finally, it is a critical time for the vaping sector…especially in the UK. Vapouround asked Ordóñez what she thinks the industry could and should look like in the years to come. “Well, first and foremost, I think the vape industry should be an industry that can develop with the consumer in mind, providing alternatives to get people off and away from smoking. “The vape industry needs to be a very transparent industry that provides credible and nonmisleading information to consumers.”

The European MD said: “Being stocked in duty free gives us the opportunity to spread awareness about ANDS products with a type of audience that normally has the interest, the time and the ability to both purchase them and then talk about them elsewhere. “It gives you visibility across borders, which is very important at this moment in time, as there is no industry that wants to focus on one single market. “ANDS doesn’t want to focus in a single market, we are charging forward with our EU expansion. “So, the fact that we’re present in duty free just makes us more visible across different countries VM47 l 97

CANCER SURVIVORS CAMPAIGNING FOR CHANGE

Is enough being done to tackle the impact that smoking has on the UK’s public health? Two women are campaigning on behalf of all those suffering at the hands of cigarettes. Words: Emily Malia 98 l VM47

he clock is ticking… and time is running out as we reach four years since the government committed to making England ‘smokefree’ by 2030. Despite tobacco being the biggest cause of cancer in the UK, half of adults in the Northeast don’t think enough is being done to help kick the bad habit. Representatives from the area - including cancer survivors Sue Mountain and Cathy Hunt - attended the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health to mark the importance of four years passing. From starring in ‘Smoking Survivors’ and TV advertisements to campaigning in Westminster, these two women are overcoming obstacles and winning battles to secure a future without cigarettes. Sue Mountain, who began smoking as a child and has been diagnosed with smoking related cancer three times since 2012, has been pleading with the Government to take further action.

WHY AREN’T WE DOING MORE TO STOP PEOPLE DYING? ITS TIME TOBACCO COMPANIES WERE MADE TO PAY FOR MORE SUPPORT FOR SMOKERS… the ASH Smokefree GB survey and Fresh with its intent to ‘make smoking history’ proves that knowledge is power, and that this power can be taken to parliament. The survey revealed that for Northeast adults, 79 percent support a levy or fee on tobacco companies, along with 69 percent supporting the idea of raising the age of sale to 21. These are numbers that simply cannot be ignored, and so these brave women are supporting calls for greater investment in public education campaigns and a levy on tobacco companies. Conservative Party Councillor, mother of two and cancer survivor Cathy Hunt, said: “Too many people are becoming ill and dying from smoking.

She said: “You lie to yourself and say you love smoking, but you need the cigarette – that’s the addiction. Over the years I think I probably spent over £100,000 on cigarettes.

“Tobacco companies lied to people about low tars, and they lured more women into smoking through glossy marketing and slims, which has resulted in more lung cancer and COPD.

“I could have bought half a house with that or seen the world instead of getting cancer.”

“And people like me, who might have quit are instead getting cancer. They wanted us to keep smoking and those diseases are still being seen in our hospital wards today.”

It’s evident that action on smoking isn’t just needed, but necessary, and as the pressure on our NHS, economy and local communities amplify, these women, alongside organisations like Fresh and ASH, continue to campaign. Passionate about the cause, Sue explained further: “Tobacco has killed nearly eight million people in the UK in the last 50 years. “Why do we tolerate this? Why aren’t we doing more to stop people dying? It’s time tobacco companies were made to pay for more support for smokers and awareness campaigns encouraging people to stop.” The combination of information provided by

The deadly cigarette use has nearly halved since 2005 in the Northeast, but that is solely down to the efforts of its local authorities trying to push for a bigger chance. Decade after decade, the NHS have been treating smoking-related diseases, but it’s time that we support smokers in quitting, and prevent people from picking up the habit in the first place. We can only hope that by sharing their stories and championing the advocacy work, that the government will wake up and take action in achieving a smokefree future for the next generation.

MARKEATON PARK FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL AUGUST 12-13

WARWICKSHIRE PRIDE AUGUST 19

Staying close to home, Project Vapouround travelled to Markeaton Park for a weekend full of tasty food and electric entertainment.

The sun shone down on Project Vapouround as we rolled into Warwickshire Pride to celebrate love in all forms at the one-day festival.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a true British summer without downpours to kickstart the weekend, but this didn’t deter travellers f rom all corners of Derby to join in the festivities.

The seven-hour event was a showcase of love and incredible talent, kicking off with a parade through Royal Leamington Spa and f inishing at the Pump Room Gardens, our location for the day.

One individual was surprised to learn that as a current smoker, he could in fact get his vapes provided by the NHS as part of their new ‘Swap to Stop’ scheme. Leaving Markeaton behind, we felt proud of the work and knowledge we had provided following another successful weekend of spreading smoking cessation awareness.

One man visited Project Vapouround in hopes of making the big switch. He was ready to stop smoking after 20 years, but just didn’t know where to start. He had tried other avenues, but every time he hit a hurdle, he would end up with a packet of cigarettes in his hand regardless. We supplied him with leaflets, resources and a new vape device of his own to help him start his journey to the f inish line.

CROOKED HOUSE ON THE HILL AUGUST 27

LEICESTER PRIDE

The Project Vapouround Team were delighted to see a bright day ahead, with speakers already blaring as we arrived at the Crooked House Festival in Lichf ield.

Our very f irst event for Project Vapouround was Leicester Pride, so we were delighted to be back again for our one-year anniversary…and what a day it was!

With a makeshift beach to one side of us and a circus-esque tent on the other, a steady stream of festivalgoers clad in glitter and neon leotards began flocking to the bus.

Thousands of LGBTQ+ supporters of all ages descended on Abbey Park for an incredible day of celebration in the sun.

One woman, who had been smoking for 40 years, tried her very f irst vape and ended up leaving with several devices after an informative conversation regarding the benef its of the cessation tools.

As the sun started to set, and the temperature dropped cold, it was time to bid farewell to the distant sounds of drunken laughter and the steady thrum of pulsing music.

SEPTEMBER 2

The Project Vapouround bus became a hub for vapers of all levels - and curious smokers looking to make the switch - to chill out and get their questions answered by our team.

One individual was struggling to f ind the right e-liquid after making the move away f rom disposables and onto an open pod system.

We introduced her to nicotine salts and then gave her some samples to try out, which she was very thankful for.

SHIPLEY COUNTRY PARK FOOD FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 3

DERBY PRIDE

Our return to Shipley Country Park Food Festival was one of blue skies and rays of sunshine.

We were delighted to attend Derby Pride for this year’s LGBTQ+ celebration, offering the attendees a smoke-f ree alternative with Project Vapouround.

Surrounded by amazing, independent food and drink stalls, it didn’t take long for crowds to enter the park and begin a day of enjoying the muchneeded British summer heat. One attendee approached us, interested to learn more about vaping in the hopes of helping a fellow family member to quit smoking. After supplying her with one of our ‘Vaping 101’ booklets, which contained all the key information and support to kickstart their journey, she left feeling positive and better equipped. Following a wonderful day spent outside in the sun, it was time to return home and bid our goodbyes to Shipley.

SEPTEMBER 9

Despite the scorching weather on the hottest day of the year, thousands of people showed up in their vibrant outf its, undeterred by the extreme heat. We were lucky enough to have the best spot at Markeaton Park - it was perfect for catching all the performances on stage whilst staying cool in the shade. We chatted with several individuals who were trying to quit smoking and move towards vaping, and we were happy to offer them resources and guidance to help them on their quit-smoking journey.

With three-days in Las Vegas ahead of us, the Vapouround team were beyond excited for the Alternative Products Expo. Hosted a mere five minutes from the famous Las Vegas strip, it came as no surprise that the community at the event shared the same electric energy. Featuring some of the biggest vape brands from across the world, there was a plethora of many different consumers that attended to bear witness to the many latest technological wonders the industry had to offer. Daddy’s Vapor and Crystal Pro were just a select few

of the big names amongst the exhibitors posted at the event, it was also a pleasure catching up with some familiar faces during our stay overseas. In true Las Vegas fashion, the convention centre was adorned by multiple poker tables and slot machines amongst the many eye-catching stalls. When the days came to an end, the fun didn’t stop there….with the strip just a stone’s throw away, consumers and exhibitors alike found themselves exploring the bustling atmosphere outside of the expo. All in all, our time in Las Vegas was a huge triumph and everyone we met was incredibly welcoming and friendly and the team at Vapouround look forward to future opportunities from across the pond.

INTERTABAC, GERMANY SEPTEMBER 14-16 Words: Sidney De Silva

The next expo in the industry’s calendar was InterTabac, hosted at the Messe Dortmund in Germany, where the world’s leading retailers, manufacturers and industry representatives could all be found under one roof. Germany was such a beautiful country to visit – from the fast-approaching autumnal weather, to the easy to speak to locals. The three-day event was packed full of fun and exciting stalls from across the globe, with their main mission of showcasing the best the vaping industry has to offer. On the first day of the expo, we were hit by a mixture

118 l VM47

of consumers, all of whom shared a common passion surrounding the globally popular smoking cessation tool. Come day two and three, the turnout was overwhelming as we tried to meander through the event to our stall. We were fortunate enough to speak to a number of exhibitors and consumers, who were all interested to find out more on Vapouround and our message. The expo itself was a huge success for the community as it was quite possibly the biggest and busiest expo the industry had hosted to date. As the long weekend drew to a close, we ticked off yet another successful expo for Vapouround.

ELF BA R

ELF BAR 600V2

DISPOSABLES Specifications: E-liquid Capacity: 2ml Nicotine Strength: 20mg Salt Nicotine Puff Amount: 600 puffs Rinbo Cloudd Strikingly similar in taste, this flavour from industry leader Elf Bar, carries a wealth of fruity, rainbow candy inspired notes. Bursting at the seams with sugary delight, it’s easy to pick up on that unmistakably nostalgic taste of colourful candy. Washing over your tastebuds comes a blend of sweetness that is then offset by an intense sourness that will literally make your mouth water after every puff. The classic harmony between sweet and sour that the iconic rainbow candy is known for is perfectly replicated now in vape form. With minimal amounts of iciness, you can still enjoy an unequivocally fruity flavour. Mojito A fanciful fusion of flavours, this disposable aims to replicate the instantly recognisable taste of a timeless cocktail. Tantalising notes of lime bring a sort of delightful effervescence to the table, giving a solid podium for the icier mint elements to protrude from. The unique synergy between fruitiness and coldness helps design the ultimate mojito flavour, that will leave you wanting more. To me, the true beauty of this flavour lies in just how well it exudes realism, and the masterfully crafted combination makes for a refreshing vaping experience. Blueberry Kiwi Blissfully simple, the two constituents in this disposable continue to pave a path of striking flavour and unmatched elegance. Aromatic in taste, the notes of blueberry offer vapers a chance to admire a blend of tartness and softness simultaneously. In order to further elevate the punchy feel of this

disposable, Elf Bar have opted for a wide reaching hit of super sour (but mind blowingly vivacious) kiwi fruit. This remarkably effective combination gives both elements a chance to play off one another and therefore thrive, all whilst you sit there and enjoy puff after puff. Lemon Lime With an incredible balance of tangy lemon and zesty lime, this insanely effective fusion is a true testament to the alliance between these two citrus powerhouses.

The combination of slushy-like watermelon meets the strong strokes of bubblegum in a true cacophony of flavours, complementing one another in the most intricate fashion. This idea to combine the two was obviously a good choice, and the proportions were ideal. It is safe to say I thoroughly enjoyed this disposable and the low amount of ice in this case made it even more delicious.

Elf Bar have done what they do best, by amplifying the bold citrus profiles with a subtle hint of icy freshness, boosting the bright feel of this device. A fruit/ice combo is a match made in heaven in my opinion, and this disposable boasts impactful, long lasting flavour with enjoyment at every turn. Thanks to the mesh coils used in this line of products from Elf Bar, you can expect to have this full on flavour last the entirety of this disposables lifespan. Apple Watermelon A combination not often seen in the vape world, this was a first for me. I’ve tried plenty of apple flavours, and probably even more watermelon ones, but this pairing is new. As I initially expected, the apple presents itself as a tart green apple, rather sour in taste. This is soon balanced by a much softer, but equally as enjoyable, watermelon. To me, the introduction of the straightforward watermelon gave a really effective calming touch to the notes of apple, whilst still offering up a sweet, realistic flavour. As with many of the disposables in this review, there was a slight indication of iciness, and this just elevated the fresh feeling brought by the other elements. Watermelon BG Doing it’s rounds right now, bubblegum flavours are my personal ‘go to’ when it comes to choosing a flavour. They offer vibrancy, nostalgia and have an unequivocally iconic and sweet taste. Elf Bar’s decision to add a punchy edge of watermelon was a stroke of pure genius. VM47 l 125

LO ST MA RY

LOST MARY BM600S

DISPOSABLES Specifications

With their wildly effective and bold profiles, the lemon and lime are boosted somewhat by a subtle iciness, increasing the fresh feel of this disposable.

Straw Golden Pina Gearing up for a fantastically exotic flavour experience, this offering from renowned disposable vaping pioneers Lost Mary will knock your socks off.

Pina Kiwi Lemonade Among the more distinctive flavours to grace my palate recently, the incredible smorgasbord of exhilaratingly exotic, bright and satisfying tastes hits you square in the face on the very first draw.

E-liquid Capacity: 2ml Nicotine Strength: 20mg Salt Nicotine Puff Amount: 600 puffs

Enjoy strong, sweet and devilishly well-rounded tropical tastes, ranging from soft, juicy and mellow strawberry all the way to a burst of vibrant, zesty pineapple. To harmonize and soothe the intensity of these bold flavours, a creamy undercurrent of coconut gently envelops them, granting each note equal space to flourish. Remarkably devoid of excessive cooling agents, this flavour remains incredibly refreshing. Lemon Lime Arguably one of the more popular flavour profiles on the vaping market recently, I eagerly anticipated Lost Mary’s take on this beloved classic and to see how they would put their spin on a well-admired staple. Reminding me somewhat of a lemonade beverage, this flavour even included an effervescence that lit up the overall refreshing nature of this disposable. With an exquisite balance of sharp lemon and tongue-tingling, tantalising lime, it’s easy to appreciate this combination. Often lemon and lime go hand in hand and Lost Mary have concocted the perfect ratio between the two.

126 l VM47

Bringing an uplifting punch of pineapple, sharp kiwi and fizzy lemonade, the complex and clearly well thought out selection of flavours is both powerful and gregarious. To mellow out these intensely strong elements comes a soothing, subtle but omnipresent undertone of coconut. The amalgamation of all these strikingly authentic fruity notes culminates in a genuinely tropical taste…a perfect twist on a timeless cocktail for those who appreciate the extraordinary. Berry Combos Incredibly complex and meticulously created, this iteration of Lost Mary boasts the sweetness of ripe strawberries, the tenderness of fresh raspberries and the tanginess of tart blackberries - all vying for your attention simultaneously. To add a further edge of intricacy, you will likely notice a subtle blend of summer fruits at its core, rounding up the brighter, more auspicious flavours. With just a touch of chill, many will relish the strong taste and refreshing feel of this disposable, day in and day out, with no flavour dissipation over time.

BOU SOFT B4500

DISPOSABLES

Specifications Puff Count: 4500 puffs Liquid: 12 ml Nic Content: 0% Coil: Mesh Coil, 1.2 ohm Charging Method: Type C Passionfruit Mango Ice This flavour offers a bright selection of fruity tastes and combines the tropical sweetness of mango with the exotic and tangy edge of passionfruit. With a fairly sharp hit of ice, this cooling undertone provides a refreshing, cold sensation when you inhale. The classic combination of fruit and cooling is super popular, and this disposable displays a perfect rendition of how well it can be achieved. This disposable brought together a truly enjoyable blend of flavours, and the end result is a beautifully complex, fruity, and refreshing vaping experience that will be loved by many. Strawberry Watermelon Ice Bringing a wealth of fruitiness to the table, this beautiful blend of flavours not only impresses but also delivers a satisfyingly smooth hit. Encompassing the iconic richness of strawberry and pairing it with a strong, sweet watermelon that is devilishly decadent, you can expect a boisterous, intense, and moreish taste. The fact that this disposable includes a powerful minty undertone simply boosts the refreshing feel that this disposable offers. I found that the interaction between the fruity notes and the cooling agent worked well against each other, in the fact that the iciness brought a vivacious feel to the already bright, fruity elements. Blueberry Raspberry Ice A flavourful combination often found in disposable vapes, this profile seamlessly blends the tangy but softly sweet notes of blueberries with mellow, earthy raspberries. The addition of ice accurately indicates a strong, cooling element that provides a chilling sensation when vaping. This fantastic combination results in a fruity, refreshing, and boldly icy flavour that will appeal to die hard icy fans, who can also appreciate the full-on fruitiness.

VM47 l 127

Although not a flavour I would typically opt for, I really enjoyed the intensity of this disposable and its capacity to impress.

Encompassing these two elements is a refreshing and tangy twist of lemon. The decision to include a powerful citrus edge brought a revitalising feel to the overall flavour, giving it a truly enjoyable vibe.

Kiwi Passionfruit Guava Ice Delightful and exotic, this flavour profile is an unequivocal leader in the world of disposables. This rendition combines the zesty and rather tangy essence of kiwi with the tropical sweetness of passionfruit, which is then compiled with a punchy and exotic guava. With a cool, minty undertone, this disposable delivers a refreshing and icy kick with each puff. The expertly concocted combination of these three fruity flavours creates a harmoniously executed set of modalities, ranging from the tartness of kiwi to the sweetness of guava to the punchiness of passionfruit. Adding to the already bright set of fruity notes, the soothing, cooling sensation gave this disposable a complexity that makes this a compelling choice for any vaper who enjoys an invigorating vaping experience. Pomegranate Juice Blackcurrant Lemon An exciting fusion of unique, fruity flavours, this disposable is as refreshing as it is different. Marrying a set of intense flavours, including pomegranate, blackcurrant, and lemon, this disposable is guaranteed to amaze. Pomegranate brings about a touch of tartness, while notes of blackcurrant add depth, sweetness, and a sense of realism.

Vapers who can appreciate complexity and vibrancy will find that this flavour ticks all of the boxes, and then some. Strawberry Ice Blissfully simple but elegantly executed, this disposable offers an utterly delightful vaping experience. Enlisting the bright, sweet, and rather relaxed vibe of candied strawberries, their notes are quite mellow in comparison to the arctic iciness. Super well known in the vape industry, strawberry ice flavours can vary greatly in how well they are constructed as well as how enjoyable they can appear to some. I would have to say that this is a wonderful example to start on, and even with its simple nature, it doesn’t feel boring or repetitive. As with many in this line of disposables, vapers of fruity and/ or cold flavours will also relish the taste of this intensely wellcrafted portrayal. Peach Pineapple Lime Another distinctive interpretation of a not often seen collection of flavours, Peach Pineapple Lime is a vibrant and tropical experience from the get-go. This enticing blend combines the sweet, juicy notes of ripe Georgia peaches with the tangy, tropical edge of pineapples. The choice to include notes of zesty lime simply enhances the overall profile, adding a refreshing and tart twist to the table. I found that vaping this flavour was like a tropical vacation for my tastebuds, and the succulent sweetness of peaches, the tropical punch of pineapples, and the zesty kick of lime created a perfectly balanced and enlightening vaping experience. Double Apple Ice Captivating from the start, this flavour, loved by the masses, delivers an iconic, crisp, and perfectly proportioned blend of two popular apple varieties. As indicated by this disposable’s name, there is a hefty chunk of cooling agent wedged in, giving a refreshing base layer. Vaping ‘Double Apple Ice’ is realistic in the sense that it is like biting in to a combination of sweet, juicy red apples while simultaneously enjoying a tart, crisp Granny Smith green apple. These already bright and summery notes are then

revitalised even further by a burst of intense iciness, giving the overall flavour a vibrant and moreish kick. Mountain Spring Mint Ice Boasting an incredibly invigorating set of flavour ingredients and a brilliantly refreshing experience, Mountain Spring Mint Ice brings a wonderful iciness to the table. Initially providing a bright and bold burst of sinus tingling menthol, you can already begin to appreciate the depth of this flavour. Following on from the intensity provided by the traditional menthol taste comes a touch of sharp, cool sweetness delivered by peppermint—not unlike a peppermint candy cane. Introducing a mild, equally as sweet and slightly herbal edge comes a smidge of spearmint that perfectly complements the more powerful notes. Rounding up this incredibly cold blend of tastes comes a soothing undertone of cooling agent, creating the ideal vape for any mint or menthol fan. Strawberry Kiwi Ice A mouth-watering blend delivering a cacophony of flavours and sensations, this disposable carefully combines the succulent sweetness of strawberries with the tropical allure of kiwi fruit. The addition of ice provides a refreshing icy element, guaranteed to create an exhilarating experience with every exhale. ‘Strawberry Kiwi Ice’ perfectly encapsulates the essence of a chilled fruit medley, recreating the ideal balance between sweet and sour with the invigorating sensation of frosty mint. Because of this, I feel that this flavour will be a clear choice for those who crave cold, fruity delights, with no chances of getting overwhelmed by the powerful elements in this disposable. Watermelon Ice A simple but tropical concoction, this disposable captures the very essence of a summertime treat. Imagining biting in to a crisp, juicy watermelon slice, they have perfectly replicated the realistic feel of this flavour. The watermelon flavouring used in this disposable is succulent, ripe, and juicy, and it has blown me away at how similar it tastes to the real thing. The initial burst of sweet watermelon is immediately followed by a chilly, rejuvenating sensation that leaves you wanting more. To me, it kind of came across as a cold, icy, and freshly blended watermelon juice, instantly transporting me to a faraway beach somewhere in the tropics.

This nostalgic feel really brought this flavour to life, and I’m sure others will agree. Blackberry Ice A wonderfully tantalising fusion of sweet and tart notes, complemented by an icy sensation, this disposable brings a rather simple set of flavours together in perfect fashion… picking the very best notes on which to focus. Immediately, your attention will be drawn to the rich, natural sweetness of ripe blackberries, bursting with flavour and life. This is then followed by a bracing twist of ice, giving a cool and icy exhale. This disposable was a seamlessly balanced blend of fruity sweetness and invigorating coldness, making it an excellent choice for those who seek simplicity and vibrancy. Grape Ice Beautifully balancing the natural sweetness of candied grapes with a refreshing chill, it’s easy to see that this flavour will be a hit. Bursting with candy-like vibes, the sugary feel of the grape closely replicates that of grape bubble gum. Capturing that iconic taste, this disposable then elevates the level of refreshment by adding a hefty dose of iciness, introducing a frosty, minty undertone. Although quite often seen within the industry, this profile has been executed flawlessly in this case and is one of the better renditions I’ve tried. Being a delightful combination of bright fruitiness and invigorating coolness, it will be a popular choice for vapers who relish the sweet and punchy taste of grapes with a crisp, icy twist.
