LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I can’t believe I’m writing another one of these letters already…I feel like it was just yesterday that I was putting the final touches on the previous issue of the magazine.

Since then we’ve enjoyed the festivities of the holidays, had one-too-many drinks in honour of the new year and endured the blistering winter weather as we waited for the first glimpse of the spring sun.

But while many of us have enjoyed an end of the year break, the ever-growing vape industry never even showed a hint of slowing down.

A fact reflected by the content in this edition of Vapouround.

In this issue, we tell the story of an American student who was allegedly forced to remove her clothes – including her bra – as school staff searched her for a hidden vape.

To learn more on this, check out our story ‘A violation of civil rights’ in the news section.

We also looked at the latest ‘popcorn lung’ scare story being peddled online, highlighting the scepticism and outrage of industry advocates who asked... …‘how can you get popcorn lung from a product that doesn’t cause it?’.

For details on this hot topic situation, read our story ‘Same horror story, different day’ later in the magazine. What surprised me the most when

putting this edition together was just how ingrained in the public consciousness and current culture vaping has become.

This rings so true, that this issue is one of the most star-studded we’ve ever produced.

Just some of the famous faces to feature in this magazine are world class footballer Lionel Messi, pop sensation Doja Cat, veteran actor Jamie Lee Curtis and self-help superstar Dr Phil. But that’s enough from me. I don’t want to keep you from flipping through the pages of Vapouround and getting a taste of what’s going on in the industry. So go forth, enjoy and take in this collection of headline-grabbing stories and engaging features.

Thank you and happy reading.

A HOT BUTTON Issue

Pro-vaping advice from the London Fire Brigade has resurfaced online and is being shared by international harm reduction advocates.

The LFB’s ‘Caring for Smokers’ guidance details how cigarette use has long been a ‘top factor’ in fatal fires and that quitting or encouraging someone else to ditch the habit could save lives in ‘more ways than one’. The advice went onto confirm that vaping is less harmful than smoking and if you, or the person you care for, can’t stop smoking…‘reducing risks is the next best thing’.

Living in Northampton is the equivalent to smoking 189 cigarettes per year, found a new study. According to the shocking HouseFresh research, pollution in the East Midlands city is so rife that residents could be suffering the consequences of pseudo secondhand smoking. One British Heart Foundation study even linked Northampton’s poor air quality with one in every 20 deaths in the area. HouseFresh reports Nottingham and Bristol as the second and third worst places in the UK when it comes to pollution, with locals essentially smoking 181 and 163 cigarettes per year respectively.

Beloved artist Lana Del Rey was spotted casually vaping during a recent Instagram livestream while interacting with her adoring fans. The ‘Young and Beautiful’ singer was seen releasing a plume of vapour from behind a face mask while recording herself at night. This is far from the first time the star - best known for her melancholic and lamenting 1950s sound - has been associated with the reduced risk product. In fact, Del Rey’s love of vaping has even found its way into her music, with the singer puffing away in the background of her song ‘White Dress’.

The second installment of our wildly successful Middle East and North Africa awards is returning for 2023 and entries are now open! We will once again be jetting off to the opulent city of Dubai for a night of celebration and vaping delight, recognising the very best the MENA industry has to offer. And with awards available across 21 categories - including ‘Best Vape Retailer’ and ‘Industry Leader’ – there are plenty of chances to win.

G’DAY Vape

Australian musician Daniel Johns was spotted with a vape in hand as he exited a recent Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in Sydney. The front man for 90s rock band Silverchair was joined by his DJ girlfriend Lauren Mac at the Accor Stadium event and completed his causal outfit with what appears to be a green disposable. Johns has previously been photographed smoking so it’s positive to see the Aussie star with the reduced risk alternative instead.

A VOICE FOR THE Masses

After nearly two years of service, harm reduction hero Charles A. Gardner is departing from his leading role at INNCO. In a public announcement, the International Network of Nicotine Consumer Organizations commended its former executive director for being a ‘man of science’ and wished him well.

An Australian high school is facing the wrath of parents after it removed the majority of student toilets and cubicle doors to prevent teens from vaping and smoking. The move – which has been described as a ‘massive violation’ of human rights –even sparked an online petition, which has already gained more than 450 signatures. One horrified critic said the situation in Tasmania’s New Norfolk High School is ‘worse than prison’, while another called it ‘unacceptable’. According to the petition, the change means students are now forced to wait in lines for 30 minutes when they want to use the bathroom.

Oui SEE YOU VAPING

Many of Charles’ followers were shocked by the news, with one tweeting: “You’ve been the voice of so many…we fight on!” The vocal advocate responded to messages of support by joking that the rumours of his death have been ‘greatly exaggerated’, saying he was leaving with ‘great love and immense respect’ for INNCO.

WE WON’T SAND FOR Smoking!

Iconic coastal party spot Miami Beach has banned deadly cigarettes across public parks and beaches in a bold effort to protect the environment. However, reports suggest visitors are ignoring the new rules and are still using the area like a ‘giant ashtray’. In an interview with CBS4, Dave Doebler of Volunteercleanup. org said people are flouting the no-smoking policy, expressing his concern over ‘toxic cigarette waste’ and secondhand harms. Speaking a week after the ban came into play, Doebler said there were still thousands of littered cigarette butts in the area but hoped it would ‘reduce significantly’ over time.

Harm reduction advocates and experts were appalled when a doctor said vaping is worse than smoking in a recent Twitter post. In a controversial statement, Physician Gayle May said it can take just one use before e-cigarettes cause ‘permanent lung damage’. The former engineer then asked: “How can this be legal. Both are bad, but real cigarettes are better.” Critics came down hard on May’s claims –which were in response to a now deleted Tweet – pointing the doctor towards a wealth of evidence that vaping is less harmful than smoking. One commentor said: “This post is horribly destructive and uneducated.”

An image of French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne with an e-cigarette in hand has emerged on social media, earning the attention of global harm reduction advocates. One of the people to share the picture was Colin Mendelsohn, who said it was ‘great to see’ the

reduced risk alternative is helping the her ‘avoid an early death’. Twitter user Andrew Thompson also commented on the image, joking that the 61-year-old vaping politician embodied the ‘harmful effects of youth vaping’.

KEEP YOUR Cash!

Popular vape brand ELFBAR tried to donate thousands to the American Cancer Society, but the health body is rejecting the funds, according to new reports. Justifying its decision, the ACS said it won’t partner with or accept money from ‘tobacco companies’… which can be confusing when you consider the vapes ELFBAR sells don’t contain tobacco. The donations came as part of ELFBAR’s ‘Lighthouse Guardian Program’ which is intended to combat youth use. However, the ACS – which accepts funds from known antivape organisation Bloomberg Philanthropies – has ordered ELFBAR to stop suggesting they work together…even launching a cease and desist against the brand.

MEXI-NO TO SMOKING IN Public

Mexico has introduced a total ban on smoking across public spaces as part of a strict bevy of new regulations. Under the measures, which are considered to be some of the toughest in the world, lighting up is now prohibited in parks, beaches and hotels. This

builds on existing laws which ban smoking in places such as bars, public transport, workplaces and restaurants. The new regulations also mean the advertising and promotion of tobacco will be completely outlawed.

said single-use devices – which ASH says are the most popular amongst children - can be purchased for ‘under a fiver’. However, if a £4 tax is enforced, the cost of disposables would be at the same level as the ‘cheapest re-

usable’ vapes, making them less affordable for minors. ASH Chief Executive Deborah Arnott said: “In one simple step this would reduce both child vaping and the vast quantities of single use vapes being thrown into landfill.”

There’s no doubt that cigarettes are a bane on the environment and are still one of the most littered products in the world. It’s difficult to walk through a city centre or along a public beach without stepping through a graveyard of discarded cigarette butts…but Spanish policymakers think they might have a solution. Under new environmental regulations, tobacco

companies will now be charged to clean up smoking waste from the streets and beaches of the sunny European nation. The greenminded policy came as part of new laws also prohibiting the singleuse plastics that pose a threat to the planet.

THIS BELONG IN A Muse-ohm

An ancient crypt, believed to date back to the 14th century, has been discovered under a vape shop in Kent. Sam Jessop - store manager at the Evapo shop and accidental Indiana Jones - said he stumbled across the chamber while trying to take a gas reading in the basement. He said: “You would’ve thought

you’d just walked into a church… how could this possibly still have been here without anyone truly knowing the significance to the local community?” History buff Simon White said the ‘spooky and atmospheric’ crypt demonstrates that most of the area’s past is ‘buried under the streets’.

YOU CAN’T Vape HERE

Policymakers in Georgia are discussing a bill that would see vaping in enclosed public spaces treated as a misdemeanour. According to a report from Georgia Public Broadcasting, the bill is expected to match existing laws against smoking and could mean those charged might face fines between $100 and $500. Republican Senator Chuck Hufstetler suggested that vapes release aerosols that contain ‘ultra-fine particles’ and ‘low levels of toxins’ and that they pose ‘some health risk’ to bystanders. The UK’s National Health Service says the limited available evidence indicates ‘any risks from passive vaping is small relative to tobacco cigarettes’.

George Orwell’s ‘1984’ is upon us! This warning came from harm reduction advocates talking about the current state of tobacco control. The alarming caution came from Charles A. Gardner, who pointed out messaging around vaping emulates the ‘newspeak’ seen in Orwell’s sci-fi novel. He said: “In the field of tobacco control; a 50 percent drop in teen use is ‘epidemic’, companies that seek to kill cigarettes are ‘big tobacco’ and liquid aerosol (vapor) is ‘smoke’.” For those who don’t know, ‘newspeak’ is a language used by totalitarian powers that sees the meaning of words and terms inverted to influence the masses.

A OF CIVIL RIGHTS

Could the moral panic over vaping do more harm for children than good?

Words: Jordan Millar

violation

HEALS

A distraught mother has filed a federal lawsuit after her teenage daughter was allegedly strip-searched in the hunt for a vape pen.

According to the suit, the young girl was taken to the nurse’s office of her Ohio middle school and told to remove all clothes except her underwear…

…this included her bra.

Humiliated and scared, the eighth grader was reportedly then inspected by a nurse’s aide and wasn’t given the opportunity to leave or refuse.

The family’s lawyer – Jared Klebanow – claimed the school went too far and that forcing the middle schooler to be ‘all but naked in front of a stranger’ was a violation of her civil rights.

He said: “People say time heals all wounds, but it is important to remember that, almost always, a scar is left behind.

“Subjecting a teenage girl to a strip search over an object which posed no threat of violence to students or staff was unreasonable.”

Klebanow added that children and teenagers ‘do not leave their constitutional rights at the door’ when at school, stressing that this was an ‘embarrassing’ ordeal’ for someone to go through.

According to the lawsuit, the teenager – who attends Eastlake Middle School – was in possession of a vape when a friend asked her to store one in her locker earlier that day.

Trying to fit in, she ‘begrudgingly agreed’, but was honest about the interaction and

the location of the device when she was later confronted by the school’s principal.

The unnamed girl’s gym and hallway lockers were both searched, however, when the vape pen wasn’t found, more drastic measures were taken.

She was led to the nurse’s office by Principal Colleen Blaurock, who reportedly told untrained nurse’s aide Rosalyn Rubertino to conduct a body search.

And after she was given the all clear by the school’s nurse Megan Kuhlman – who wasn’t in the building - Rubertino told the young girl to strip down, allegedly ignoring her questions and concerns.

Once she’d conducted the initial search, the aide left the room to consult with the principal who was waiting outside the door.

But when the eighth grader asked if she could put her clothes back on, she was told ‘no’ and left standing alone and almost naked in the office.

Rubertino returned once again and shone a UV light in the girl’s eyes before finally telling her she could get dressed.

After all this, it was confirmed that the teen wasn’t in possession of a concealed vape…but she was still dealt a two-day suspension.

The family’s lawyer Klebanow highlighted that, while strip searches may be permissible where there could be a ‘severe threat of violence’, their use is not appropriate when looking for a vape.

He said: “Students and parents must be able to trust that public school districts and the adults working within those districts will do everything possible to protect the rights of our students.

“In this case, they failed.”

The ongoing lawsuit has been levied against principal Colleen Blaurock, nurse’s aide Rosalyn Rubertino, nurse Megan Kuhlman and the Willoughby Eastlake Schools Board of Education.

It claims there was a failure to train school staff, the intentional infliction of emotional distress and violations of the teen’s constitutional rights.

The alleged incident took place in September 2022 and the suit was filed in the following December. Defendants are yet to comment.

“PEOPLE SAY TIME
ALL WOUNDS, BUT IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT, ALMOST ALWAYS, A SCAR IS LEFT BEHIND.”
VM43 l 21

Unsurprisingly, news of the supposed strip search triggered a wave of outrage from critics.

People from within and outside the vape community came together in a melting pot of shock and disgust, taking to social media to share their fury.

Popular vape Youtuber Grimm Green was just one of many to raise their voices, even talking about the suit in a recent video.

He said the ‘ridiculous’ choice to strip search a child is symptomatic of the moral panic being pushed by groups like Parents Against Vaping and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

The industry celebrity went onto suggest these anti-vaping organisations are ‘just as culpable’ as the defendants and said, ‘I guess this is the America they want’.

But he wasn’t the only one to share his horror…here’s what just a few other people had to say.

· “I literally have no words…the country is just getting worse by the minute.”

· “This is horrendous. I don’t care what the issue is, traumatising a child in that way should never happen. PERIOD. “I hope this child is ok, has access to a counsellor and is HEAVILY compensated for this.”

· “This is getting way out of hand!”

· “Strip searching a young female is not only despicable, but its effects will also be a lifelong trauma. Completely unacceptable.

“Thank you PAVE and CTFK; by instilling moral panic in the public school system you have traumatised a teen…the very demographic you claim to be protecting.”

Disposable vapes?

SORRY, WE NO LONGER STOCK THOSE

Critics cry ‘hypocrisy’ as Waitrose bans singleuse vapes…but decides to keep deadly cigarettes on the shelves.

Words: Jordan Millar

28 l VM43

The leading chain cited public health and environmental concerns as motivation for the ban, saying it ‘couldn’t justify’ stocking the controversial smoking alternatives.

It also pointed to the alleged ‘popularity’ of disposables amongst non-smokers as further reason to keep them off the shelves.

In a statement announcing the move, Waitrose commercial director Charlotte Di Cello said the brand was ‘driven by doing the right thing’.

She said: “Selling single-use vapes is not something we could justify given the impact on both the environment and the health of young people.

“We had already decided it wasn’t right to stock the fashionable bright-coloured devices which are seeing massive growth.

“This is the final jigsaw piece in our clear decision not to be part of the single-use vaping market.”

While the disposable ban has earned the support of anti-vapers, green

warriors and some members of the harm reduction community, others have labelled it an exercise in ‘hypocrisy’.

Critics highlighted that the supermarket chain still openly sells deadly cigarettes, which are not only one of the biggest killers in the world but are also one of the most littered products on the planet.

Neil McLaren of Vaping.com said Waitrose should ‘stop carping on about vapes’ and turn its attention to their tobacco-laden counterparts instead.

He said: “The virtue signalling move reeks of hypocrisy…if they stop selling cigarettes, they can make a real difference to public health and the planet.

“ BUT IF ALL THEY WANT IS CHEAP HEADLINES, THEN WOKE COMMENTARY FROM THE PR DEPARTMENT SEEMS TO DO THE JOB. ”

In the wake of Waitrose’s ban, the vape community made it clear that it was aware of growing ecoconcerns and was taking active steps to address them.

John Dunne of the UK Vaping Industry Association seemed to be at the forefront of this green-thinking effort, saying he is working to find a solution that is ‘fit for purpose’.

The UKVIA director general said: “The industry recognises its responsibilities to the environment, but the recycling of vapes is not straightforward. “It needs collaboration between adult users, retailers, manufacturers, regulators and companies in the waste management sector.”

Dunne stressed that, by overcoming this challenge and minimising the eco-impact of vapes, they can be seen as a force for good… instead of as a scourge on the planet.

He added that he was in talks with various governmental bodies about the issue and was calling on the industry to innovate more easily recyclable products.

High-end retailer Waitrose was accused of chasing ‘cheap headlines’ after it became the first UK supermarket to delist disposable vapes from its stores.

THE DOCTOR IS IN… the doghouse

No amount of southern charm or moustachioed charisma could help Dr Phil win back vapers after he slammed the smoking alternative in a recent episode of his show.

32 l VM43

Beloved TV personality and trusted public figure Dr Phil has joined the chorus of ‘science deniers’ crying out over e-cigarettes.

The pseudo-shrink dedicated a recent episode of his self-titled talk show to the smoking alternative, broadcasting emotional warnings about an alarming ‘youth vaping crisis’.

He said teens everywhere were getting hooked on the reduced risk product, citing data that ‘2.55 million middle and high school students had vaped in the past 30 days’.

The charismatic TV host added that children ‘as young as 12’ were being enticed by fun and fruity flavours and that his audience would be ‘shocked’ by what was really inside e-cigarettes.

Dr Phil’s distressing claims were met with dropped jaws and a scattering of horrified gasps from his small studio audience… …but not everyone was as convinced by his stark message and ‘eloquent southern drawl’.

Leading US industry lobbyist group, the American Vapor Manufacturers, said Dr Phil’s televised attack on vaping was a

It suggested the ‘self-help grifter’ left out crucial facts and data when talking about the number of young American vapers, even going as far as to fact-check the ‘trainwreck’ video in a detailed Twitter thread. The group revealed the ‘2.55 million’ statistic came from the CDC’s 2022 National Youth Tobacco Use Survey…and that some important

The concerned parent tried to explain she started smoking at around her son’s age and used the cessation tool to ease off of cigarettes. But her story was met with disgust from Dr Phil, who loudly exclaimed ‘are you kidding me?’ and responded with an insensitive string of

Appalled, the AVM commented: “The positive aspect of the story that Dr Phil ignored is that Connor’s mum apparently quit a decades-long cigarette habit via vaping.

“Did this win her any sympathy…

‘Thank you for protecting your health for your children’s sake’, maybe?”

VM43 l 33

The vocal harm reduction organisation continued: “Of course not. All she got was a finger-wagging lecture for vaping.”

Later, the episode turned its focus to a 16-yearold girl who claimed vaping had made her cough up blood and suggested e-cigarettes can cause popcorn lung.

However, as the AVM rightly pointed out, there have been no confirmed cases of popcorn lung in vapers…a fact supported by leading independent group Cancer Research UK.

What was perhaps most alarming about the on-air vape bashing were the comments made by guest expert and pulmonologist Dr Cedric ‘Jamie’ Rutland.

As an official spokesperson for the American Lung Association, Rutland claimed it can take just one draw on a vape to cause lung damage.

He highlighted that black market products can contain a cocktail of unsavoury chemicals, but failed to mention that there’s no evidence of a death or serious injury caused by legal nicotine vaping.

Shockingly, Dr Rutland went onto speculate that, while he can’t say ‘vaping causes cancer right now’, he won’t be ‘surprised’ when that article comes out a decade from now.

The AVM said such a declaration was ‘irresponsible’ and asked why he decided to tell Dr Phil’s audience this, instead of the fact that vaping is 95 percent less harmful than

smoking.

It said: “This is pure fabrication that is driving adults back to cigarettes…the only study ever linking vaping to cancer in humans was recently retracted.

“Instead of unethically speculating about what we might know in 10 years, why didn’t you tell Dr Phil’s millions of viewers what we know today?”

The group suggested that the ‘disaster of an episode’ could have been saved if only Dr Phil had invited experts like Clive Bates or Charles A. Gardner onto the show.

Or perhaps, if he’d spoken to ‘any of the exsmokers who say vaping saved their lives’… and in all honesty, with an international community of 82 million, they’re not hard to come by.

The AVM ended it’s dismantling of Dr Phil’s ‘Flavour Chasing: The Teen Vaping Crisis’ with a simple question.

It asked: “How many smokers who could benefit from vaping will see this episode?

“And how many would have been inspired to quit cigarettes had they been given accurate information…we’ll never know.”

In the weeks after this episode aired, it was announced that the Dr Phil show would be coming to an end after more than two decades as the host wants to ‘pursue other projects’.

Republican politicians are facing heavy criticism after they rolled back a ban on smoking inside the Capitol building.

Words: Jordan Millar

40 l VM43

You are in the US House of Representatives.

Ahead you see several figures dotted around a table, they would be almost invisible if the smouldering cherries at the tips of their cigarettes weren’t illuminating through the smog.

Suddenly your nostrils fill with the scent of burning as plumes of smoke rush to the still open door and escape into the hallway behind you.

Despite watering eyes you can now make out the snappy suits of the tobacco-toting politicians before you; they are deep in discussion about the biggest issues facing the nation…only pausing to take a draw from their cigarettes.

Though this may sound like a scene pulled from a nineteen-something political drama, or a thrilling war-time documentary, many worry this could be a reality today.

longstanding ban on smoking in the Capitol Building after recently gaining control of the House of Representatives.

The prohibition was originally introduced by democrat Nancy Pelosi during her time as House Speaker and meant members were barred from lighting up an any areas except their offices.

However, the Republicans made the polorising decision to reverse the policy, meaning members of congress and staff are free to ‘puff away’ in the House side of the building.

Smoking is still banned in Senate areas.

The move triggered major criticism from political opponents and the public, who questioned why changing the rule seemed to take priority over a catalogue of more pressing issues.

They also highlighted that smoking in indoor public spaces is illegal across the rest of Washington DC, asking why its ‘one rule for them and another for everyone else’.

One Twitter user wrote: “We’ve seen thousands of ads telling people smoking is bad for you…now these Republicans are allowing people to smoke in the Capitol when it is forbidden anywhere else.

“Of course they have to do the opposite.”

Another said: “So Republicans voting to allow smoking in the US Capitol is going to solve inflation and the border issues…did I get that right?”

Following the decision, Texas Congressman Troy Nehls defended the freedom to smoke in a controversial appearance on Fox News.

With a pocket full of cigars on display, he told host and political commentator Tucker Carlson: “I don’t know what all the hoopla is about.”

“For two years I’ve been smoking cigars and no one complained about it, but now they want to come after us because we are in the majority.

“This is typical from the left; they want to infringe on our rights, they’re probably complaining about my aftershave or the colour of my tie, it doesn’t end.”

Amazingly, Carlson actually praised the congressman for standing up for ‘the most American of pleasures’ and said tobacco is the foundation on which the US was built.

The talk show host then ended the segment by saying: “If you were smoking weed or meth no one would say anything, what is it about tobacco that triggers them so profoundly?”

Nehls confidently responded ‘maybe they’ve never tried one’ before putting a cigar to his lips, pulling out his lighter and motioning to spark up on national TV.

This interview only added to the horror of critics, who were stunned at the pair’s apparent ignorance over the millions of deaths caused by smoking each year.

They detailed how the new policy could not only drive cigarette and cigar use but would also expose unwilling Capitol Building staff to the harmful effects of second hand smoke.

Commenting on Twitter, Dr Kathie Allen said: “Smoking at the Capitol is bad for everyone.

“When caring more about a personal freedom to inflict selfharm causes others to suffer…no one is free.”

Shockingly, vaping – which is proven to be 95 percent less harmful than cigarettes – is still banned in the Capitol Building, despite the change in smoking policy.

It is also frequently painted as a public health enemy in the US…even though it has been shown to help millions of people quit tobacco and change their lives for the better.

When caring more about a personal freedom to inflict self-harm causes others to suffer… no one is free.

DOOM AND Bloom(berg) Bloom(berg)

Under most circumstances, news of a $420 million contribution to help combat global tobacco use would be cause for celebration.

But when the organisation signing the dotted line just happens to belong to one of the most prolific anti-vaping zealots in the world…it’s no surprise that some are holding their applause.

The substantial investment came from nonother than Bloomberg Philanthropies, which was founded by harm reduction big bad and ex-New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

According to the non-profit, two thirds of the near half-a-billion total will go to ‘reducing tobacco use in low-and-middle income countries’, focusing on measures like smokefree zones and increased tax.

The remaining $140 million has been earmarked for curtailing youth e-cigarette use in the states…a move that would alarmingly include supporting anti-vaping measures like flavour bans.

Leading advocacy group, the World Vapers’ Alliance, said this latest funding effort from Bloomberg shows the billionaire is ‘doubling down’ on his crusade against the reduced risk alternative.

It said that the non-profit – and the

organisations it helps bankroll – have a history of ‘hostility’ against harm reduction and told people to ‘expect further antiscience misinformation campaigns’ moving forward.

WVA Director Michael Landl said: “The reality is that Bloomberg Philanthropies systematically ignores the wealth of evidence pointing to the benefits of vaping.

“Taking away less harmful alternatives from the most vulnerable, regardless of real-world outcomes, is outrageous…restricting or banning access to vaping will do nothing but cost lives.”

He added: “If Michael Bloomberg doesn’t change his approach soon, he will go down in history as the biggest stumbling block for ending smoking without realising it.”

Landl highlighted that the billionaire’s ‘network of charities and select groups’ already have ‘significant influence’ over world leaders, with his support guiding vape bans in Mexico and the Philippines.

However, it’s countries that ENDORSE the reduced risk product that see the greatest smoke-free success, with nations like the UK and New Zealand leading the fight against cigarettes.

The WVA boss said: “These countries do exactly the opposite of what Bloomberg wants and are on course to end smoking.

Alarm bells are ringing after non-profit Bloomberg Philanthropies committed nearly half-a-billion in additional funding to global ‘tobacco control’.

50 l VM43

“Vaping has already saved millions of lives and should be embraced instead of fought.

“But this announcement shows Michael Bloomberg is doubling down on his ideologically driven fight against harm reduction…ignoring all the accompanying negative consequences of his policies.”

Echoing Landl’s concern, a chorus of industry voices have called out Bloomberg’s blatant anti-vaping agenda.

In a recent blog, Jim McDonald of Vaping360 said ‘virtually every’ proposed US flavour ban over the past three years was funded as part of a $160 million anti-vape campaign from –you guessed it - Bloomberg.

He also highlighted that the billionaire has been known to make up ‘facts’ about smoking and vaping, going as far as to say nicotine lowers IQ test scores in teenagers. McDonald wrote: “Bloomberg Philanthropies carefully cherry-picks supporting evidence for its preferred authoritarian solutions to smoking disease and death.

“It regularly conflates the known deadly harms of smoking with the much more benign – and mostly speculative – risks of vaping to gain public support.”

He added: “Bloomberg and his allied organisations believe the only way to reduce adolescent vaping experimentation in the US is to ban flavoured products…even if prohibiting vapes sends millions back to combustible tobacco.”

Another group waving the red flag after Bloomberg’s announcement was outspoken lobbyist group, the American Vapor Manufacturers. The AVM highlighted that youth vaping in the US is already on the decline, having dropped by 50 percent since 2019.

It also pointed to evidence that teen smoking is continuing to ‘decline towards zero’ and that policies targeting the reduced risk alternative typically increase cigarette use. In a recent Twitter thread the group commented: “Critics have blasted Mike Bloomberg for his unethical anti-vaping activism.

How has he responded?

“By dumping an extra $420 million into nicotine prohibition…he is sacrificing the

lives of countless people on the altar of his megalomania.” The AVM continued: “We agree with Bloomberg on one point; the conversation about vaping is critical because ‘many lives are at stake’.

“We only wish Mike weren’t putting them at risk by trying to ban the most effective quit smoking tool ever devised.” The newly announced $420 million investment will be injected into the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use and brings the non-profit’s total tobacco control contributions since 2005 up to $1.58 billion.

If Michael Bloomberg doesn’t change his approach soon, he will go down in history as the biggest stumbling block for ending smoking.

TO ban OR NOT TOban? L L

Words: Oliver Smith

More than half of all Brits want the sale of cigarettes banned ‘immediately’ in the UK, according to an eye-opening new survey.

The shock study – commissioned by news outlet MailOnline – found 21 percent of respondents would ‘support’ a prohibition and a further 31 percent would ‘strongly’ back such a move.

Polling firm Redfield and Wilton Strategies, which conducted the research, revealed less than a quarter of people would stand against a ban.

The polorising data sparked major debate online, with some saying a block on cigarette sales could ease pressures on the NHS and improve public health.

However, others warned the move would be an insult to our right to choose, suggesting people should be free to indulge in bad behaviours.

Critics also predicted a ban wouldn’t stop smokers from using cigarettes and warned that it would instead guide them into the waiting hands of the black market.

54 l VM43
Is outlawing smoking a breach of our personal freedoms or a bold effort to protect public health…the nation doesn’t seem to agree.

One Twitter user said: “Personal responsibility and freedom are both human rights…we don’t live in a dictatorship.

“Ultimately, the NHS is a service; it is paid for by us to serve our needs and shouldn’t be used as an excuse to control us.”

Another added: “Banning things doesn’t make the issue –or even the thing – disappear.

“As we’ve seen with the failed ‘War on Drugs’, we not only fail to find a solution, but worsen the issue.”

Rebecca Jane of mental health group RJ8 spoke out in support of a cigarette sale prohibition, saying it’s ‘just one thing we could do to improve the health of the nation’.

In an appearance on GB News, she said: “For me, we should be looking to do whatever we can to minimalise something that contributes to 78,000 deaths per year.”

When asked where we draw the line on banning things that can be bad for us, Jane stressed that smoking has an impact the health of others and not just our own.

Amazingly, the MailOnline poll also found that 73 percent of Brits back legislation that phased out cigarettes overtime.

This would mirror controversial policy already being enforced in New Zealand as part of the island nation’s effort to become smoke-free.

Under the first-of-its-kind Kiwi regulation, the age to purchase cigarettes will increase every year until no one in the country can legally buy the deadly tobacco product.

Unlike an absolute ban, just 10 percent of survey respondents said they ‘opposed’ or ‘strongly opposed’ the progressive outlawing of cigarettes.

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting even confirmed the Labour party was planning on discussing a phasing out approach, saying that he was ‘genuinely curious’ about how the NZ policy works.

There is a clear and strong divide between those for and against a ban on cigarette sales, with many flocking to social media to make their voices heard.

Here’s what people on both sides of the argument had to say.

THE vape-th WONDER OF THE WORLD

It may not trade punches with giant lizards or go toe-to-toe with a roster of mythical beasties… but King Kong Vape Juice IS fighting to stay at the top of the industry.

Words: Emily Malia

Not unlike the silver screen ape of the same name, King Kong Vape Juice is a brand that prides itself on its determination, strength and ambition.

And, much like the titan, the company is dedicated to showing its worth at the top of the industry foodchain.

We recently caught up with the King Kong team,

who outlined the brand’s ethos and mission…as well as its goals moving forward.

IT’S BEEN SAID THAT 2023 WILL BE A DEFINING YEAR FOR THE VAPE INDUSTRY, WOULD YOU SAY THE SAME STATEMENT APPLIES TO KING KONG VAPE JUICE AS WELL?

“Absolutely; this year is shaping up to be a key for the sector and King Kong Vape Juice is no exception.

56 l VM43

“The brand is stocked in major countries around the globe including Australia, South Africa and Peru… our aim is now to conquer Europe and the rest of the world.

“We have been working tirelessly to create new, innovative products and are now in the process of developing a fresh line of Kong Go disposables and Kong Salts.

“We are confident that these new lines and flavours will help us solidify our position as a leader in the premium vape juice market.”

IT COULD BE ARGUED THAT YOUR BRANDING IS SOME OF THE MOST IDENTIFIABLE ON THE MARKET, WHAT WAS THE THOUGHT PROCESS BEHIND THIS?

“Our branding is one of the most important aspects of our business and we put a lot of thought and effort into ensuring it remains recognisable and memorable.

“The logo, for example, is designed to be bold and eye-catching, featuring an image of the iconic ape himself…but with a special twist.

“We also strive to use vibrant and bold colours across all of our packaging and marketing materials, ensuring that our brand stands out to adult smokers and vapers.”

YOU’VE WON A NUMBER OF VAPOUROUND AWARDS IN THE PAST – INCLUDING ‘BEST BRANDING AND MARKETING’ AND ‘BEST UP AND COMING BRAND’ – ARE YOU HOPING TO SECURE ANOTHER WIN THIS YEAR?

“We are incredibly proud of the awards we've won in the past and it's always an honour to be recognised by the industry.

Earning highly-sought-after titles at previous Vapouround Awards has been a huge achievement for us and it's a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team.

“While we can't say for certain if we'll be winning any awards this year, we're always working hard to create the best products possible and we'll definitely be putting our best foot forward.”

THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF WHISPERING ABOUT FLAVOUR BANS IN RECENT HISTORY, HOW WOULD YOU EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF VARIETY AND CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO E-LIQUIDS?

“We all have different preferences and limiting the options available to vapers and want-to-be exsmokers will only see to damage the industry and harm reduction efforts.

“We’ve seen a lot of reports showing that when flavours are taken away, people may revert to smoking…that’s something we don’t want to see!”

YOU’VE ALREADY COLLABORATED WITH OTHER BRANDS IN THE PAST ARE THERE ANY OTHER PARTNERSHIPS ON THE HORIZON?

“Collaborations are always exciting for us and we've had great success working with other brands in the past.

“Our previous partnership with PuffMi on the disposable e-cigarette was a great example of how two brands can come together to create something that excites the vaping community.

“We’re constantly collaborating with brands either by creating new products or with a neat giveaway!”

CAN KING KONG VAPE JUICE FANS EXPECT ANY MAJOR STEPS OR DEVELOPMENTS IN THE NEAR FUTURE… PERHAPS A NEW DROP OR CAMPAIGN?

“Our fans can definitely expect some major news in the near future.

“We're always working on new and exciting projects, including a new marketing campaign that will showcase our brand in a whole new light.

“We're also planning to launch new sections on our website that will improve the online shopping experience for all those stores and wholesalers out there.”

IN A REAL FIGHT BETWEEN THE GREEN LIZARD GOLIATH GODZILLA AND THE SO-CALLED ‘EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD’ KING KONG, WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD COME OUT ON TOP AND WHY?

“Dangerous question! What we can tell you is that King Kong Vape Juice stands for quality and excellence and we strive to be the best in the industry.

“Like King Kong, we are strong, fierce and determined to be the best in the market.

“And like the mountainous silver screen titan, we are always ready to take on any challenges that come our way. Godzilla better watch out!”

“LIKE KING KONG, WE ARE STRONG, FIERCE AND DETERMINED TO BE THE best IN THE MARKET.”

DON’T LET THE Irresponsible Minority DESTROY THE UK VAPING INDUSTRY

cigarettes than ever before. But even the first-hand accounts of former smokers, who say that vaping has given them their lives back, fails to curb enthusiasm to damage the sector.

And while we can’t silence the antivaping lobby, we absolutely must stop giving it ammunition to use against us.

I know how hard UKVIA members work to be ambassadors for vaping and to ensure the products they manufacture, distribute and sell are as risk-free as possible, fully comply with the law and are only aimed at adult smokers.

Let’s just focus on the issue of youth vaping, because unless we get this under control, then the current light touch regulation could be replaced with something very different indeed with detrimental effects on the entire industry.

A wide variety of flavours are vital to ensuring that former smokers don’t revert to cigarettes and - with scientific studies to back up this fact –this is an argument we can win. But if rogue players keep peddling products which look like children’s

One of the biggest ironies about the vape industry is that the more it is shown to do good, the more it is attacked and demonised. Even when a recent Office of National Statistics report revealed that vaping played a ‘major role’ in bringing UK smoking rates to their lowest levels since records began, the attacks didn’t die down…if anything they grew more intense.

The problem is that there is a lot of vaping misinformation out there and the main thrust of this is that vaping is supposedly a very bad thing indeed. You might have thought the fact that vaping is 20 times less harmful than smoking would make the critics think twice about their desire to attack the industry.

Especially when that same industry is helping more smokers give up

Our members represent all sectors of the industry and I know that they go to great lengths to ensure that vaping is seen in the best possible light so that it can fulfil its potential to help make Britain truly smoke-free. Rarely does the mainstream media report on all the good that vaping does, but as soon as one irresponsible company puts a foot wrong then the whole industry is demonised and brought into disrepute.

The UK has got one of the most pro-vaping regulatory regimes in the world and this has allowed the industry to flourish.

One need only look at the UKVIAcommissioned Economic Impact Report into the UK vaping industry to appreciate this, (see my column in the last issue of Vapouround Magazine for more details on this).

But we must not allow ourselves to fall into a false sense of security and think this will never change.

toys or feature colourful cartoon characters - and believe me, they are out there - then nobody will listen to the fact that vaping helps adult smokers quit.

The narrative will be that the industry deliberately targets kids and the emotional impact this has on parents,

As an industry we must redouble our efforts to stamp out youth vaping and make it abundantly clear that we will not tolerate those who target young people.
As regulators, politicians and special interest groups increasingly turn the spotlight on youth vaping, now is the time to clampdown on the minority who think they are above the law.
“ “ 60 l VM43

regulators and politicians could be enough to drown out any other argument about how good vaping is. And we don’t need a crystal ball to see how this could play out. All we need to do is look to America where the damage has already been done and the vape industry has been brought to its knees.

Youth vaping in America is at a threeyear low, but the media constantly reports that the US remains in the grip of a frightening youth vaping epidemic.

Politicians have discovered that they can boost their approval ratings by ramping up the fearmongering to further terrify already worried parents who believe what they see on the nightly news.

The same could happen here. Once a moral panic over youth vaping reaches a critical mass, even provaping politicians may fear they could lose the support of their electorate unless they oppose this life-saving technology.

In fact, it is already starting to happen.

The Scottish Green Party is asking retailers to treat sweet flavoured vapes just like cigarettes and hide them from public view over fears that they appeal to young people.

The party’s health spokesperson Gillian Mackay claims that the industry is deliberately targeting young people and is touting the idea that a vape flavour ban is needed to protect children from vaping.

The vast majority of manufacturers, suppliers, distributers and retailers go to huge lengths to ensure that vape products do not get into the hands of under 18s, but people will believe emotional propaganda like this, even where not a shred of evidence is offered.

As an industry we must redouble our efforts to stamp out youth vaping and make it abundantly clear that we will not tolerate those who target young people.

They have no place in our industry and we must be united in our opposition against this irresponsible minority.

Millions of dollars have been poured into the anti-vaping movement…but what else could that money have been used for?

64 l VM43

THE PUBLIC IMAGE OF VAPING HAS BEEN

ou might recognise this bold quote from a story featured in a previous issue of Vapouround Magazine.

The news piece looked at a shocking report which pulled back the curtain on the multi-million-dollar effort to decimate our industry and those who were funding it.

Published and created by the American Vapor Manufacturers, the eye-opening document found the anti-vaping machine was largely being bankrolled by just three organisations.

By analysing publicly-available financial records dating back to 2017, the AVM identified this trio of mega-donors as Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Between them, these groups are said to have forked out at least $282 million in ‘ulterior funding’ to drive the anti-vaping movement and influence a network of lobbyists, front groups, reporters and researchers.

But we’re not interested in looking at where this eyewatering amount of money came from or where it ended up…at least not in this feature.

Instead, we want to find out what pressing real-world crisis it could have helped address if it weren’t used

TYCOONS

to attack the most effective quit smoking tool ever devised.

Now, before we move any further, we should clarify that we aren’t saying these three organisations don’t do any good, philanthropic work.

The simple truth is that they do. Each of them has poured immeasurable funds and resources into serious issues in a commendable effort to ‘make a difference’.

Which is why it’s still so dumbfounding that they are willing to pour millions into global efforts to vilify vaping.

‘GRIPPED IN A STRANGLEHOLD BY POMPOUS

BUILDING AND OVERSEEING 35,000 CLEAN WATER WELLS FOR THOSE IN NEED

There’s no arguing that clean, safe drinking water should be available to everybody…but the sad truth is that it simply isn’t.

Non-profits like Water Wells for Africa are working to change that, helping to uplift rural African communities by providing ‘sustainable water sources’ to those in need.

According to the WWFA, it costs around $8,000 per well – based on their work in Malawi and Mozambique – though it can vary depending on factors like materials, labour wages and location.

But this sum doesn’t just go to building the well… in fact, the WWFA says it’s also used to form an overseeing committee and to provide ‘hygiene and sanitation training’ to the village.

Based on the non-profit’s $8,000 estimate, the money our trio of anti-vaping groups have forked out could be used to build an astounding 35,000 wells.

It can be easy to forget how lucky we are to have food in our cupboards and fridges, especially when you consider that there are countless people going hungry around the globe.

The Share the Meal app – which is an initiative of the United Nation’s World Food Programme – is on a bold mission to address this international food crisis.

Through donations and volunteer work, it provides aid to places like Yemen, Syria and Nigeria and has already provided more than 170 million ‘shared meals’.

Amazingly, the scheme can feed one child for one day with just $0.80…imagine what it could do with $282 million.

Well, we ran the numbers and it turns out a sum like that could keep 965,753 hungry children fed for a year. That’s around 352,500,000 days’ worth of food.

Share the Meal does take a percentage of donations for fundraising, marketing, running costs and payment fees; but even when that’s accounted for, there are still 598,767 kids being fed for 12 months.

66 l VM43

When those of us the UK suffer a bump, scratch, broken bone or any other number of issues, we can usually find help through the NHS.

And while there may be issues with our health service – and this isn’t certainly the platform to discuss those – there are some places in the world that just don’t have access to medical care.

This mean millions of children can unnecessarily die from preventable diseases like malaria, cholera and typhoid every year…a crisis UNICEF is trying to combat.

According to the charity, a £55 donation can be used to train a health worker so they can ‘provide children and their mothers with life-saving care’; this includes nutritional advice, supplements and mosquito nets.

If the $282 million forked out by our trio of antivaping big spenders were repurposed for this, there could be an additional 5.1 million health workers with the skills to help those in need.

35,250,000

HARMFUL ALTERNATIVE

Despite the growing vape industry and efforts from public health and harm reduction campaigners, there is still an estimated 1.1 billion smokers in the world.

That means an eighth of our global population is still – in some way – being subjected to the deadly health effects of cigarettes…before you even account for all those suffering through second-hand harms.

But what if the $282 million figure was used to introduce these smokers to vaping, what kind of difference might it make?

The average disposable can cost anywhere from $5 to 10; if we split the difference and say $8, that sum could be used to buy 35,250,000 smokers their first vape.

And while not all of them would necessarily take to it, if just ten percent decided to make the switch then there would still be more than 3.5 million people who move away from cigarettes.

The claws are out after Say So singer

Doja Cat – who publicly denounced vaping - was seen with a cigarette.

Words: Jordan Millar

International pop icon Doja Cat was spotted smoking on an Instagram livestream, just MONTHS after vowing to quit vaping.

The singer decided to ditch the reduced risk alternative last year, when a ‘nasty growth’ forced her to cancel a series of live performances. Devastated, Doja told fans

she needed urgent surgery to remove an abscess which had developed in her tonsils.

She assured her followers that the procedure was ‘routine’ but recovery could take a while...spelling doom for her upcoming festival run and tour with The Weeknd.

The Grammy-award-winning artist added: “I feel horrible

about this...I can’t wait to heal and get back to making music for y’all.”

Doja’s ‘bad news’ came last May, with the singer confirming she had a throat infection ahead of the 2022 Billboard Chart Awards. She was on antibiotics at the time but forgot to take them during the event, claiming

76 l VM43

that this – paired with a day of ‘drinking wine and vaping’ – triggered the abscess.

In a series of social media posts, the musician said she would be ‘quitting the vape for a bit’...much to the celebration of her followers and the antivaping community.

However, her recent livestream showed she could very well still be using much more dangerous cigarettes.

And what’s more, she lit-up while interacting online with her legions of dedicated and besotted fans.

When screenshots emerged of Doja’s ‘on air’ antics, a wave of people were quick to call her out. While some

Remember when some of the antivaping front groups praised her for quitting vaping?

But those remarks were countered by critics, who wrote comments like:

supporters suggested she was using herbal cigarettes, others urged her stop.

Commenters reaffirmed that vaping is intended to be a smoking cessation tool and that she'd had surgery just eight months ago. One Twitter user joked:

“Her throat doctor must be relieved she can smoke again.”

Another said: “Remember when some of the anti-vaping front groups praised her for quitting vaping?”

Alarmingly, some fans actually celebrated Doja for smoking, saying she looked ‘hot af’ with the cigarette in hand.

One of the most high-profile vape and sport collaborations has been renewed for a second term…making it one of the longest standing in history.

There were no doubt cheers from the vape community when top drawer football squad Paris Saint-Germain first announced it was partnering with e-cigarette brand Geekvape.

Such a collaboration between a sports club and a vape company was virtually unheard of at the time…especially one of this scale.

The sponsorship deal quickly proved successful and saw the two parties – each at the top of their respective worlds – join forces across campaigns and co-branded products.

It even saw Geekvape, a Chinese-born brand renowned for its hardware, release a series of

vape kits decorated with the PSG logo and colour scheme.

In fact, the first-of-its-kind team-up proved so beneficial that the pair has decided to renew its partnership – originally formed for the 2021/22 season – moving into this year.

This represents one of the longest ever working relationships between a sports club and vape company and is a testament to the industry’s growing public presence.

In a press release announcing the continued sponsorship, Geekvape said it hoped to piggyback on the ‘enormous popularity’ of football to spread the concept of health to fans around the world.

80 l VM43

The brand suggested its work with PSG –which is home to football legends like Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. – would also help elevate the vape sector.

Geekvape CEO, Allen Yang, said: “I am delighted that our partnership was so successful last year and it is an honour to carry on the spirit of healthy sport with Paris Saint-Germain.”

He added that the two groups share a focus on ‘excellence and elegance’ which will be reflected in their collaboration over a ‘new and exciting season’.

Yang said: “By forming alliances with one of the world’s most successful and greatest football clubs, we are expanding the scope of sports marketing and driving the vape industry towards new heights.”

Moving forward, Geekvape hopes it can build a strong collaboration with football fans and wants to use the extended PSG team-up to send an ‘important message to the world’.

Since Geekvape and PSG first joined forces in July of 2021, there has been increased cross-over between the worlds of vaping and sports.

One of the most high-profile examples of this is the UK brand Elux’s sponsorship of the recent Tyson Fury v Derek Chisora match-up.

WHAT’S YOUR PERS ALITY?Ohm

Between tricksters, social activists, juice lovers and more, there’s a range of different types of vapers…in this feature, we outline five of the most popular.

here’s no denying that the vape crowd is a diverse one…it only takes a visit to a trade expo or community forum to see that.

The industry is made up of people from all walks of life who are unified by the reduced risk smoking alternative and the public health power it presents.

Some of us are hobbyists - defined by our love of crafting coils and hardware - while others are

committed advocates, always ready to pick up a placard and lobby for the sector.

But with so many different kinds of vaper out there, it can be challenging to figure out which type best represents you.

In this feature, we breakdown five of the most common vaping personalities and highlight what makes each of them unique.

If you spend a lot of time perfecting your cloud-chasing skills or enjoy orchestrating swirling plumes of vapour with showy hand displays, then you may well be a vape trickster.

This personality type enjoys the lighter, fun side of the industry and

is certainly no stranger to a bit of competition…they may have even won a few.

For the vape trickster, blowing O’s and showing off their talents is an great way to express their love for the industry and for the smoking alternative.

Words: Emily Malia

Whether it’s researching new products or keeping up with all the latest developments in the sector, this personality type wants to…well, know it all.

They take pride in their rich understanding of the industry, eager to learn more and serve up a feast of facts and statistics.

But being a ‘know-it-all’ vaper is about more than just having an encyclopedic knowledge, it’s about using it to educate smokers on the reduced risk product and maybe even helping them quit cigarettes.

Disposables? pods? Not for this type of vaper.

Be it trying new flavours or experimenting with different brands, the juice collector is all about the e-liquid.

They most likely have a assortment of bottles at home that could put a small store to shame and love finding a new additions for their collection.

Signing petitions, sharing advocacy posts and attending peaceful demonstrations? All in a day’s work for the social activist vaper.

Despite helping people across the globe ditch deadly cigarettes, the reduce risk alternative is still facing misinformation and scare stories…

but this type of vaper wants to see change.

They focus on educating and lobbying, spreading the good word of harm reduction to decisionmakers and smokers in the tireless mission to uplift the industry.

From building coils to brewing their own e-liquid and building mods, the hobbyist vaper is deeply involved in the artistry of e-cigarettes.

In the early days of the industry, there was a wave of people who fell into this category, but as times have changed and solutions

like disposables have grown in popularity, the community has sadly dwindled.

But despite this, there is still a strong and dedicated group of die-hard hobbyists who continue the proud tradition and uphold this innovative side of the industry.

Words: Jordan Millar

Despite the support of Cancer Research UK and history itself the vape industry is still batting away concerns over popcorn lung.

This horrifying headline – and variations of it – have recently been circulating online, painting a terrifying picture of the most effective stop smoking tool ever devised.

But the shock story, which was picked up by mainstream news outlets like LADbible and the Daily Mail, has left sceptics asking the question…

“GIRL WHO FELL ASLEEP WITH VAPE CLAIMS SHE’S GOT ‘POPCORN LUNG’ AND COULD NEED AN OXYGEN TANK BY 30.”
86 l VM43

According to reports, Abby Flynn had been vaping for about a year and a half when she found herself struggling to breath and rushed to Milton Keynes University Hospital.

Flynn – who’s had asthma since childhood – said she’s never smoked before and started using disposables because they were ‘trendy’.

Apparently, the 20-year-old’s ‘addiction’ got so strong, that she was getting through one singleuse device every day and even developed an ‘attachment’ to her vape.

That is, until she found herself allegedly fighting for breath and suffering with a cough so ‘awful’ that she decided to take a trip to the walk-in centre.

Speaking of the ‘panicking’ ordeal, Flynn said: “It was really scary. Initially I didn’t know what was wrong…I knew I had asthma but it wasn’t really feeling like an asthma attack.”

The Buckinghamshire resident was then taken to resus, put on oxygen, given medication and subjected to an X-ray.

She claims doctors asked her if she used disposables and eventually diagnosed her with bronchiolitis obliterans; a condition more commonly known as ‘popcorn lung’.

They allegedly then told her she needed to quit vaping within the next 10 years otherwise she could end up needing an oxygen machine.

Flynn said: “I was quite shocked when they told me because all my friends vape – everyone from 18 to 25 – so for it to happen to me and not anyone else… I was a bit like ‘what?’.”

But it’s not just Flynn who was surprised, with a crowd of harm reduction advocates, vapers and exsmokers calling ‘BS’ on the diagnosis.

They highlighted that there have been no confirmed cases of popcorn lung linked with vaping and that e-cigarettes DO NOT cause the devastating condition…a fact that’s even supported by Cancer Research UK.

Critics said popcorn lung is actually caused by diacetyl; an additive that has been banned in the UK and is not found in legal products.

Responding to Flynn’s claims, leading economist Christopher Snowdon said: “Difficult to know who’s lying here but someone is. There is no evidence that vaping causes ‘popcorn lung’.”

Another critic suggested that the Milton Keynes University Hospital ‘should be investigated’ while others said the story was ‘rubbish’ and questioned why there were no quotes from the doctors who issued the diagnosis.

These sceptical comments were echoed by thousands of Twitter users, who took to the social platform to share their disbelief.

Advocates use a wide variety of methods to spread the message that vaping saves lives.

They speak at international conferences, write newspaper columns, articles and blogs and attend virtual events where they explain the tobacco harm reduction rationale.

Social media is another key weapon in the activism arsenal, with online platforms allowing them to help as many smokers as possible look beyond the propaganda and misinformation about vaping.

In this recurring feature, we shine a light on just some of the often-humorous, ever eyeopening posts and images that caught our attention on the digital advocacy front.

VM43 l 91

FLAVOURS matter!

It feels as though there has always been the threat of flavour bans looming over the industry.

And when the sector isn’t batting away laws that would strip the smorgasbord of taste options from the hands of vapers, it’s waiting for the next in a long line of politicians to make the suggestion.

But, as this graphic from the WVA demonstrates, flavours are critical for vapers and without them many ex-smokers would go back to deadly cigarettes or turn to the black market…

…more specifically, 50 percent of them would.

The World Vapers’ Alliance said this data seems ‘unknown’ to the policymakers who push for prohibition, asking how long they will continue to ‘ignore the evidence’.

Along with this eye-opening image, the group cited evidence that 20.9 percent of e-cigarette users prefer tobacco flavours, 22.5 percent opt for mint or menthol and a whopping 33.5 percent favour fruity options.

92 l VM43

IS THIS FALLING ON death ears?

How many times have you heard the words ‘yeah…vaping seems safer, but we don’t know the long term effects’. Lost count? We’re not surprised.

This seems to be a go to reply for every anti-vaper and harm reduction sceptic when asked about the overwhelming evidence supporting e-cigarettes as a reduced risk alternative.

But how long is enough before we can outright

confirm vaping is less harmful than smoking…how much more data do we need?

As drug law reform doctor Alex Wodak highlights in this post, there are millions of smoking-related deaths each year and deadly cigarettes remain one of the biggest killers in the world.

On the other hand, there is no confirmed evidence of serious injury or death caused by legal nicotine vaping…a fact this poignant newspaper comicesque picture perfectly illustrates.

VM43 l 93

AND THE LIST goes on...

This graphic – created by Edward Hubert - puts cigarettes and vaping side-by-side and outlines some of the potential risks associated with each.

Naturally, the smoking column dwarfed vaping, with its gruesome list of harms pouring down the page.

Just some of the health impacts included were COPD, stroke, bronchitis, infertility, a collection of various cancers and, of course, death. The list was shared in response to a statement from

the President of the Royal Australian College of GPs.

The statement read: “A Cancer Council Victoria report found almost 9 in 10 adults want government action to stop a new generation of Australians from becoming addicted to nicotine.

“It’s welcome news that so many people recognise the dangers of vaping, particularly for young people.”

Hubert highlighted that the College of GPs president ‘must not know’ nicotine is in cigarettes, adding ‘harms of nicotine addiction’ under the smoking column and as the ONLY entry in the vaping list.

THE END IS SURELYnigh?

Harm reduction powerhouse Charles

A. Gardner asked the FDA when it’s going to announce the US ‘teen nicotine vaping epidemic’ is over in a recent Twitter post.

He highlighted that current use has ‘dropped by 50 percent’ since 2019 and that daily use was now at less than three percent overall.

In fact, with the help of data from the CDC and the FDA, Gardner showed that US teen vaping is at lower levels NOW than in 2015…a time when it wasn’t referred to as an ‘epidemic’.

Interestingly, the infographic also shows that teen cigarette use has plummeted from 1.5 million to 0.3 million over the past eight years.

VM43 l 95

BETTER HEALTH… sounds about right!

Between scare stories, misleading headlines, propaganda and antivaping keyboard warriors, fighting for the reduced risk alternative can feel like an endless battle.

But when we see a post from Better Health NHS endorsing vaping as one of the most effective quitting tools available, it reminds us that we are truly making a difference.

This Twitter post addresses the ‘confusion’ and ‘misleading’ information that surrounds e-cigarettes, pointing people in the direction of balanced facts on vaping.

Harm reduction advocates, members of the vaping community and ex-smokers all celebrated Better Health’s statement, thanking the body for helping ‘spread the message’ and ‘sticking to the truth’.

What in the What in the

WORLD? WORLD?

As we finally shake off the winter chill and move towards the warmer seasons, we outline the vaping policies of some of the most popular tourist spots on the planet.

Words: Jordan Millar

VM43 l 99

Some nations are all for the reduced risk product, upholding it as a public health force for good and a key weapon in ending the smoking epidemic.

Others look to the industry as an ill-willed collective of moneyhungry entrepreneurs, dead set on hooking the masses with a sinister blend of deceptive marketing and promises of a ‘safer’ alternative.

Then there are those countries that are yet to take a position, teetering on the edge between progressive policy, heavy restrictions and outright bans.

With all this to consider, it can often feel like stepping into a new world of laws and legislation whenever you visit a different country.

And with organising plane tickets, squeezing into those old swimming trunks and all the other stress that goes into planning a holiday, thinking about whether or not you can vape is likely the last thing on your mind.

Luckily, we are here to help.

In this feature, we highlight which popular tourist destinations have an open-minded stance on the less harmful alternative…and which have implemented some sort of ban.

UnitedKingdom

There are no laws limiting where you can vape (though individual companies and businesses may have their own rules). E-cigarettes are available for purchase but those sold and used must meet legal standards.

Brazil

The use of vape devices in this South American tourism hotspot is legal, however, their sale, advertisement, distribution and importation is not. There are also bans against vaping in public transport and in public spaces.

France

This romantic tourist spot falls in line with the European Union’s Tobacco Products Directive when it comes to vapes. This means they are legal but must meet the correct specifications. The use of e-cigarettes is prohibited on public transport, as well as in open plan offices, schools and other educational institutes.

It’s safe to say there is no globally agreed stance on vaping.
100 l VM43

United States

It is legal to use and sell vape products in the US. However, those that haven’t been approved under the Post Market Tobacco Products Application are technically prohibited. Individual states and cities also impose their own policies on where you can and can’t vape.

Australia Japan

Vaping regulations in Australia could be described as volatile and have caused quite a stir in recent years. Nicotinecontaining vape products are completely prohibited, unless prescribed by a registered doctor. The penalties for possessing illegal vape goods can be quite severe, even leading to jail time and hefty fines. There are also varying laws on where you can and can’t use prescribed and zero-nic e-cigarettes.

While non-nicotine containing e-cigarettes are not regulated, there are restrictions against the sale of nicotine vape goods. This is because they are classified as medicinal products. Japanese vapers ARE permitted to import a limited supply of nicotine vape products…but this is for personal use.

Can AI be a tool in the fight to terminate - pun absoluetly intended - deadly cigarettes and help smokers kick the habit?

Words: Jordan Millar

In reality, artificial intelligence is still far from perfect and while it’s already capable of truly amazing feats, it doesn’t mean we’re heading for some I, Robot or Terminator-esque future.

At least, we hope not.

Intrigued by this trail-blazing and ever-developing tech, we looked at how AI-powered tools and software could be used to help bring an end to the deadly scourge of cigarettes.

And, with the help of ChatGPT – a pioneering system that’s been the subject of countless TikToks and Twitter posts – we think we found a way it can make a difference.

If you were to ask the more pessimistic amongst us, they would tell you it’s only a matter of time before machines steal our jobs, monopolise the arts and make people obsolete.

However, there are others who see AI as an opportunity, with a group armchair entrepreneurs and forwardthinking business types viewing it as the latest way to line their pockets.

We used the chatbot, which was developed by leading industry research firm OpenAI, to create motivational quotes for smokers hoping to quit.

We then handed these over to our ever-accommodating design team, who used the computer-generated phrases to develop a series of stop-smoking posters.

What follows is the final result.

Either there’s a galaxy-sized vaper puffing away on a supermassive strawberry disposable, or these stunning nebulas look an awful lot like e-cigarette vapour.

Words: Oliver Smith

For generations, humans have looked to the heavens and wondered what astronomical secrets might be hidden across the cosmos.

Could an intergalactic community of extra-terrestrial beings exist somewhere out between the stars…or perhaps even the building blocks for life itself?

It’s this curiosity that spurred the study of the universe, turned the ignition on space travel, put a

man on the moon and eventually led to the creation of the James Webb Space Telescope… …the largest and most powerful telescope ever constructed. This scientific feat has allowed researchers to peer further into space than ever before, creating a window to some of the oldest galaxies ever formed and witness the creation of new ones.

It has captured images of never-before-seen planets and impressive celestial bodies, painting the most detailed picture of the universe we as a

species have ever seen.

The telescope – which is as tall as a three-story building - is also hunting for signs of life and can pick-up infrared light that is invisible to the human eye.

When pictures of majestic nebulas and dust clouds taken by the super-advanced machine were released to the public, we couldn’t help thinking they resembled the swirling plooms that are often released by vapers.

A TASTE OF creativity

Have you ever fancied yourself an armchair flavour artiste? If so, vape start-up Dripper Labs might just be the service for you.

Words: Emily Malia

Whether you prefer a fruity blend or you’re more partial to a refreshing menthol hit, there’s no denying that flavours are the life blood of the industry.

Without them, we’d all be puffing away on tasteless e-liquids, staving off our cigarette cravings with the occasional hit of…well, nothing.

Luckily, there are brands dotted around the globe dedicated to mass-producing mass-appealing vape juices so we don’t have to suffer this flavourless reality.

But what if you wanted to craft your own e-liquids… is there a way to put yourself in the driver’s seat and become the master of your own figurative mixing bowl?

Well, ambitious start-up Dripper Labs wants to provide this very service to vapers with the help of a first-of-its-kind online platform.

The brand gives curious users access to 70 different ‘hand-crafted and refined’ ingredients that they can freely combine, blend and adjust to their preference. It then uses a ‘bespoke’ automated production line to bring these recipes to life before quickly shipping the unique juices out to their creators.

Speaking on Dripper Labs, co-founder Nick Shrubsall said: “It’s so cool seeing creators make their first sale, getting a hand-check on social media or getting a shout out from their favourite reviewer.”

The brand is also committed to building a strong network of creators, acting almost as a social media platform for its users.

Through the site you can engage with other Dripper Labs members, buy the juices of fellow ‘mixing masters’ and write honest reviews.

Since its launch, more than 1,300 people have signed up to the service and Dripper Labs is gearing up to grow the community even further.

Vapouround Magazine recently spoke with Nick Shrubsall to learn more about what the brand has to offer and where it fits in the ever-growing vape industry.

HERE’S WHAT HE HAD TO SAY

It’s not easy to sum up what Dripper Labs is doing; how would you best describe the brand?

“Dripper Labs gives everyone the ability to make flavours exactly the way they want them without the steep learning curves of traditional DIY. The only thing you need to know is what you like.

“As a brand, we are fast becoming known as a supplier of high quality, great value e-liquids and building a unique community where vapers come to fall in love with flavour again.”

One reason vaping is a successful cessation tool is because vapers can find the flavours that suit their individual tastes, is Dripper Labs an extension of this?

“I wouldn’t say it’s an extension, it’s a completely fresh approach to finding your flavours.

“Our focus is on putting vapers in control. That’s at the heart of what we are doing and has really resonated with our existing creators.

“One of the fundamental features of Dripper Labs is the ability to tweak your creations. If your first flavour isn’t perfect, you can easily adjust the levels to get them exactly how you want them.

“Ultimately, our goal is to reduce the number of bottles that end up in your ‘juice graveyard’ and minimise the money wasted on e-liquids that didn’t live up to your expectations.”

What benefits does being a ‘communitydriven’ brand bring to your users?

“Our marketplace gives everyone the chance to make their mark on the world of vaping.

“It’s about the fun of creating your product ranges and the kudos of releasing a hit flavour and making a name for yourself as a creator.

“What makes our community so exciting is that all of our customers get to be a part of our startup story. It’s been amazing to watch the platform grow and we love that it has such an awesome buzz about it.

“Whether you joined us from the beginning or just made your first flavour we always go the extra mile to show you how much we value you being a part of the community.”

Dripper Labs is a bit like a social network for ‘mixing masters’, would you say the platform is almost the Instagram of the vaping world?

“We don’t have any delusions of grandeur…we are no Instagram, but building on the already strong social side of Dripper Labs is definitely a priority this year. Watch this space!”

What do you have to say to all your supporters and to someone thinking of trying Dripper Labs out?

“To anyone thinking of trying it – just do it! Trust us – you won’t be disappointed.

“Years of work have gone into bringing this crazy idea to life so that real vapers like you could finally get your perfect all day vapes. It really is a whole new way to experience e-liquid.

“To all our amazing creators, loyal customers and supporters all I can say is thank you for being a part of the journey and for making the community what it is today.

“There is still have so much more to come so stick around and enjoy the show!”

Editor Jordan Millar said: “Even though the awards are hosted in the UK, they are – and always have been – a show of the best and brightest across the global vape community.

“We encourage anybody with a passion for the industry to get involved, whether that’s through nominations, entries or simply throwing on their finest dresswear and joining us in Birmingham.”

He added: “Pushing forth the sector and working to give the world’s billion plus smokers an avenue to quit can sometimes feel like an overwhelming mission.

ON THE BUS GO

As we round off the Winter tour of Project Vapouround, we look back at all the places our vape education hub on wheels recently visited.

Loughborough Town Centre JANUARY 6

Rotherham TOWN CENTRE JANUARY 11

Armed with an impassioned provaping message and stop smoking advice, the Project Vapouround team travelled to Loughborough.

It was a lively time to be in the town, with a cast of curious smokers stepping onboard to learn more about the bus and the smoking alternative.

Our team struck up conversations with the public and helped offer balanced information on the power of vaping as a reduced risk quitting tool.

As always, it was rewarding to have an opportunity to guide smokers away from the deadly tobacco product and onto their vaping journey.

Despite dreary weather, the atmosphere on the Project Vapouround bus was as bright and exciting as always.

Even as the rain fell, there was still a stream of people coming aboard to find out more about vaping as a smoking alternative.

It’s always great to meet new people who want to make the switch and our trip to Rotherham gave us the chance to spread the positive message of vaping to so many.

One of the day’s visitors told us she was concerned that e-cigarettes contained chemicals that could cause the dreaded popcorn lung after reading a Facebook post.

However, diacetyl – which causes the condition – is prohibited in the UK and isn’t present in legal vape products.

Our team was able to address these concerns and talk her through the positive side of vaping that is so often lost in a sea of misinformation and bad science.

With new peace of mind - and a Geekbar disposable in hand - her journey to a healthier lifestyle began.

Our time in Rotherham was a friendly reminder that we’re one step closer to achieving a smoke-free future, one town at a time.

Leicester City Centre JANUARY 23

NEWARK MARKET JANUARY 28

When the bus rolled into Leicester’s Jubilee Square on a dreary Monday morning, we were unsure what the day had in store for us.

Thankfully, it was a blinding success! Despite the bitter chill in the air, parents, elderly couples and commuters all made a visit to our eye-catching bus.

Throughout the day, we had plenty of discussions with those who were sceptical of e-cigarettes.

But after explaining the various laws in place to ensure vapes in the UK meet certain standards and guiding them towards various online resources – including the NHS - we were able to set the record straight.

All in a day’s work at Project Vapouround!

Newark’s cobbled streets were packed with people from a broad spectrum of backgrounds…the perfect place to inform wannabe ex-smokers about vaping.

Whether they were shopping their way through the sales or making their daily commute into work, visitors couldn’t help but stopping to take a look at our striking Project Vapouround bus.

And when they expressed interest to learn more, we explained all the benefits that come from trading cigarettes for vaping.

The team were pleased to have met so many open-minded people in Newark!

Chesterfield Town Centre FEBRUARY 3

Stoke-onTrent FEBRUARY 8

On a bright, sunny morning, Project Vapouround rolled into Chesterfield for a fun-filled day of vaping advocacy.

There wasn’t a dull moment during our short time spent at this stop, thanks to the crowd of inquisitive people drawn towards the bus.

A selection of visitors put their tastebuds to the test in our latest game, created in collaboration with Geekbar, ‘Guess The Flavour’.

Those who took part were in with a chance to win exclusive Geekbar X PSG merchandise along with a Geekbar disposable vape of their choice.

During our visit, we encountered a number of people whose opinion on vaping had been skewed by misinformation.

More recently, it seems there is an ever-growing library of misleading factoids or false warnings linked to vaping.

One of the many reasons why Project Vapouround exists is to provide smokers with balanced information on vaping, like the fact that it is at least 95 percent less harmful than cigarettes.

The winter weather was not kind on the Project Vapouround team as we made our way to Stoke-on-Trent…but the biting cold was not going to stop us from helping smokers.

With plenty of busy shoppers filling the city centre, the team were thankful to meet so many people interested in learning more about the less harmful alternative.

That morning, we met one sceptical man who had smoked for the majority of his adult life and had never even tried a vaping device.

He was doubtful to start with, but after explaining the facts he left the bus with his first ever vape in hand.

Later that day, the same visitor returned to thank us and said that he hadn’t touched a cigarette all day.

Geekvape E100I Kit

SPECIFICATIONS

Power Output - 5W-100W

Battery - Integrated 3,000mAh

Resistance Range - 0.1ohm - 3ohm

Charging - USB Type-C

The tank/pod (known as the ‘Eteno Pod’) was attached via magnets to the top of the device.

This meant there was absolutely no need to screw/unscrew the tank to secure it and I experienced no looseness or rattling when using this kit.

Filling the Eteno Pod was just about as simple as it gets, making use of a top fill system which reduced leakages.

The fill ports themselves were of a decent size, allowing room for most e-liquid bottle nibs and the Eteno Pod made use of Geekvape’s P Series coils.

The mesh coils meant high VG e-liquids were the ideal choice with this device which, alongside high(ish) wattages, delivered intense but smooth flavour and impressive vapour production.

Though the E100i worked best as a DTL device, the fully adjustable top airflow control allows users to choose a wide range of different inhale styles.

Words: Peach Atkinson

It’s pretty commonly understood that, when it comes to pure durability, build quality and rugged design, Geekvape’s devices stand at the top of the market.

The E100i continued this proud reputation and the mod itself was robust and chunky, boasting all the quintessential design features usually seen on products from this brand.

It had that familiar leather grip, was of a decent size and I found it very easy to operate the exterior buttons.

As a nice touch, there was also a manual sliding switch on the side of the device that allows the user to easily lock or unlock the machine…perfect for when you don’t want to accidentally press the fire button.

As expected, this kit was nice and heavy, something that further reinforced the robust and sturdy feel.

For all those clumsy vapers, the E100i kit is ‘Tri-Proof’ meaning it can sustain most drops/knocks/bumps, is dustproof andto some degree – is waterproof.

What made this kit a little different to others I’ve tried was the inclusion of a magnetic tank…this seems to be an emerging trend within the vape industry.

When it comes to wattage, the mod ranges between 5-100W and – when paired with the pre-installed coil – allows for a truly authentic sub ohm vaping experience.

The built in 3,000mAh battery managed to hold up rather well, however, I found pushing the wattage higher for long periods meant it struggled to keep up.

The E100i boasts a multitude of different modes, ranging from temperature control to a unique ‘Smart Mode’.

But for this testing period, I stuck with the bog standard ‘Power’ mode, as I felt that it still delivered the type of hit I was looking for.

All relevant information is clearly displayed on a 1.06” TFT colour screen, including modes, wattage, and battery life, making it easy for the user to know exactly what is going on.

As an overall experience, the E100i kit was simply flawless, it offered reliable performance, incredible craftsmanship and Geekvape’s signature durability.

this unique take featured a delightful twist of cranberry that made it stand out from the crowd. The way that the cranberry notes softly complemented the slightly more prominent and vibrant edges of grape was nothing short of perfect. Kudos to the mastermind behind this profoundly enjoyable flavour.

I’m not going to lie; I was very excited to give this one a go. In my years as a vaper I have seldom stumbled across a vanilla/cola flavour, so I didn’t quite know what to expect. The sweet, syrupy tones of cola were most noticeable at the beginning, boasting a certain spiciness that reminded me of root beer sodas. Joining this was the smooth and well balanced vanilla, which had a subtle softening effect

From the get-go, this flavour grabbed my attention with an instantly recognisable and floral hit of sweet lychee. Despite being less present in the blend, the notes of blueberry were still noticeable and extremely accurate to the real taste. I felt that both sides stayed separate rather than blending together, something that actually worked quite well in this case. To bridge the two main profiles, there was an intense iciness which gave a revitalising and bright feel to an already delicious flavour.

as a vaper. The banana flavouring used in this disposable was fantastically smooth with no harshness and I was a fan of the soothing sweetness on offer. When it comes to banana vapes, I feel like excessive amounts of cooling agent can drastically take away from the overall taste… but that was not an issue here. I found that the careful balance between sweetness and smoothness was well considered and the subtle touch of ice made for a refreshing yet calming vape.

Cran Grape

Grape flavours are near enough ‘a dime a dozen’ these days, especially when it comes to disposables. However,

Banana flavours are very enjoyable on their own, but even more so when combined with strawberries. The banana offered an unmatched, velvety smoothness that I, for one, very much appreciated. This was livened up the sweet and slightly tart notes of strawberry, which did well to balance out the whole flavour. These two sides definitely worked together and made for a very refreshing, but not too overwhelming, vaping experience.

Mystery Bubblegum

Bubblegum flavours are a firm favourite of mine and this one demonstrates just how well they can be executed. Evolving away from a standard ‘tutti fruitti’ flavour, the ‘mystery’ element to this disposable seemed to be a collection of ripe and tropical fruits. I think the thing I enjoyed most about this disposable was how strong the flavour was without it coming across as overly sweet.

I was pleasantly surprised when I found out I would be reviewing ZOVOO’s new VINCIBAR F600 disposables. After writing and working on multiple editorials for the VOOPOO and ZOVOO brands, I was intrigued to see what this new line had to offer.

For this review, I tried six flavours from the company’s new F600 roster, all of which were the type of refreshing and fruity numbers that so many vapers flock to. Here’s how they held up.

Blueberry Sour Raspberry

When tasting this disposable I had no idea what to expect, but I can tell you that I was sold after my first puff. It was such a morish flavour and the blueberry/raspberry combo really delivered an explosion of sour goodness…it is in the name after all.

I particularly liked the two tone colourway on this disposable as well, with the purple and salmon pink pairing making for a visually appealing device.

Strawberry Icecream

Initially I was a little sceptical with the idea of this flavour, thinking that it may be a little too sickly for me.

I’ve only ever really had bad experiences with ice-cream focussed e-liquids and this has definitely helped in

putting me off the idea.

However, this offering from ZOVOO really turned my opinion around, boasting a smooth and well balanced flavour that I was happy to come back to time and time again.

Grape Ice

Ah grape, a classic flavour…and one that I am almost instinctively drawn to.

This disposable exuded everything I love about the beloved taste profile, with every refreshing puff satisfying my overactive sweet tooth.

For a while, I thought this would be my standout favourite of the batch, but it was sadly knocked off the top spot by the next entry Strawberry Kiwi.

Strawberry Kiwi

Can I describe this flavour in one word? Easy…intense. This disposable delivered a tongue-tingling tropical punch that left my mouth watering and my desire for a perfect fruity flavour fulfilled.

I couldn’t get enough of the burst of summer fruits in my mouth and can say with absolute confidence that this is a flavour I will be going back to again.

Mango Ice

I’m sorry to say that mango flavours have never been a favourite of mine…the taste notes just don’t do it for me. That is, of course, until I tried this take from ZOVOO, which without a doubt has converted me.

With this VINCIBAR I got a great flavour and a great throat hit that came together to create a delightful vaping experience.

Blue Razz Lemonade

I was slightly apprehensive when first trying out the Blue Razz Lemonade as I have never been fully sold on the Blue Raspberry taste.

I know it’s probably one of the most popular flavours of all time and is beloved by vapers the world over…but I was just never part of that group.

However, this disposable was a completely different story. The addition of the lemonade elevated the blue razz tremendously and the slight tanginess really rounded off the flavour.

Grape Strawberry

Bursting with an intense, fruity flavour, this disposable blew me away with the very first puff.

As indicated by this range’s name, the Puffmi devices make use of mesh coils, ensuring the delivery of wellrounded flavours and a powerful throat hit.

This particular disposable focuses on a punchy tasting grape that was more reminiscent of a beverage than the actual fruit.

The flavour was topped off with a fizzy and somewhat sour dashing of strawberry, which came together with the grape elements in a truly vivacious blend.

Fizzy Cherry

This flavour balanced sweet cherry with one of the most intense and impressive showings of fizziness I have ever tried as a vaper.

I found that the cherry carried a sort of syrupy smoothness, reminding me of the luminous red pearls of goodness often found in exotic cocktails.

This, paired with a truly bubbly sourness, made for an interesting and well concocted vape.

There was also a presence of ice, allowing for a full appreciation of the relationship between sweet and fizzy.

Boasting a wide range of tastes, this disposable included a mixture of sweet, sour and cold.

The first thing I noticed was the crispy tartness offered by

the Fuji apple, which was bold and instantly recognisable. Following closely behind was a masterful representation of sweet melons and a refreshing hit of icy menthol.

Wonderfully uncomplicated, this flavour boasts all the hallmarks of a decent and refreshing cola vape.

To me, the notes of cola were extremely realistic and offered a similar deep and fruity taste as one of the world's most recognisable fizzy drinks.

To give the already vibrant notes of cola a bit of an extra kick, there was also a tsunami of biting iciness.

I found that the balance between the beverage element and the icy element was so precise, that it never became dull or sickly.

Saving the very best for last, Blue Razz Lemonade represented the height of all sugary and fruity flavours. You get the sweet, candy-inspired blue raspberry blended with a sharp, fizzy and downright vibrant undertone of citrus.

The way that the blue raspberry and lemonade interacted was beautiful and created an overall taste that was truly delicious.

My favourite thing though, would be the sharpness of citrus that carried throughout, as it was not unpleasantly artificial nor was it too harsh…spot on.

to indicate that perhaps it was time to change.

To fill the pods, you simply need to open a small rubber gasket on the side and squeeze your e-liquid bottle until it is full.

Another small feature I enjoyed was that the pods were very easy to see through, reducing any risks of overfilling.

Over the course of about a week or so, I did notice a small amount of condensation build up, but that was easily remedied by quickly wiping the base of the pod when refitting it to the top of the device.

The Sonder U works best with 50/50 VG/PG e-liquids due to their less pronounced viscosity…I personally went with a 50/50 20mg nicotine salt e-liquid.

With ease of use and practicality at its very core, the Sonder U was both easy-to-use and effective.

The device itself was small and unassuming, giving off an extremely uncomplicated vibe by doing away with display screens and fire buttons.

It’s clear that simplicity was key during the design process of the Sonder U…and I have to say, I was a big fan.

The lack of fire buttons means the device included a draw activation feature, allowing users to operate the vape with ease.

Not to mention the ideal shape and size of the Sonder U, with the lightweight, ergonomic proportions making it comfortable to hold and carry.

The device makes use of built-in coils, meaning once they are no longer usable, you have to dispose of the whole pod.

Luckily, the coil life on these pods was pretty standard and each lasted about a week of moderate to heavy usage.

And rather than having that usual strong burning taste, I found there was only a small level of flavour dissipation

Even with a high strength nicotine, the draw was incredibly smooth and the flavour produced was mellow and full bodied.

I would say that the type of inhale I got with this kit was a loose mouth-to-lung, so it worked wonders with the nicotine salts.

The 1,000mAh built-in battery held up remarkably well and I only had to charge it once during the day and once in the evening.

To charge, the Sonder U uses a USB-C port and was full and ready to go within about 25-30 minutes.

In terms of durability, this device is deceivingly sturdy and managed to withstand several accidental drops.

Overall, I was impressed with the Sonder U…especially its sheer simplicity and user friendly nature.

It delivered a reliable vaping experience and you could really tell that Geekvape has decided to focus on the important things with this device.

DIGIFLAVOR DROP RDA V2 Geekvape

SPECIFICATIONS

Height - 35.2mm

Diameter - 24mm

Airflow - Multi-air-inlet airflow adjustments

Deck - Dual-coil DIY deck

The deep juice well meant my wicking cotton stayed nice and saturated, with each re-drip lasting several deep pulls.

If there’s one thing I have to commend this piece of gear on it’s the airflow control…it was simply next level and is incredibly smooth when adjusting.

The seamless transition between tight and loose is ideal for all DTL vapers and it can be fine-tuned to specific preferences.

In terms of compatibility, the Drop V2 came installed with a gold plated 510 pin, allowing users to connect this RDA to a vast range of different mods.

It also included a separate BF 510 pin, meaning - once installed - vapers can use this RDA on a squonking set up.

Words: Peach Atkinson

Well…it’s certainly been a while since the last time I used an RDA, let alone reviewed one.

To this day, I believe the flavour and cloud production on a rebuildable is second to none.

And whether you’ve used RDAs before, or are completely new to them, this offering from Geekvape is an excellent choice.

The outside of the Drop V2 has the shape and size you’d typically expect, making use of a rather simple to look and design.

However, don’t let the subtle exterior fool you as the true wonder of the Drop V2 lies within.

Installing coils on this rebuildable atomiser was exceptionally easy, with its four sturdy posts featuring nice, chunky holes for your coils.

The deck also leaves a decent amount of room for your wicking cotton and used an 810 size drip tip to create plenty of space for airflow.

Another cool little addition in the box was the inclusion of four Ni80 Fused Clapton coils and four pieces of shoelace cotton.

Working best at slightly higher wattages - depending on which coils you use - I personally found the Drop V2 really brought out the sweet notes of the e-liquid.

As you can expect from an RDA, the vapour production here was also second to none.

All in all, the Drop V2 was a true all-rounder, being the perfect option for those vapers who want to dip their toes in the world of rebuildables.

· Exceptional vapour production

· Good airflow control

CBD Disposables

Words: Alex Shenker

For this review, I took a look at two delightful flavour offerings from MOODBAR – Pink Lemonade and Blue Razz Ice.

These flavours are available in two forms; the typical two percent nicotine option or with 120mg of CBD.

I had the pleasure of trying the CBD version for this review. If I’m honest, I’m not traditionally a CBD user, so it was interesting to take these for a spin and offer an amateur’s opinion on these disposables.

Pink Lemonade

As soon as I opened the box I could immediately smell the strong, zingy pink lemonade flavour and my mouth quickly started to water.

Just as you’d expect from a high quality disposable, this MOODBAR device provided a burst of flavour with every puff.

The sweet and tangy notes were perfectly balanced, creating a delicious and satisfying vape

experience. I definitely think the CBD gave a different feel to the nicotine hit I’m used to…it wasn’t too harsh, but I think any first time users should take things at their own pace.

Blue Razz Ice

This bar offered all the same qualities as the Pink Lemonade in terms of the CBD, but with a flavour beloved by so many…Blue Razz Ice.

The initial hit of sweet, syrupy blue raspberry was quickly joined by a cooling iciness, which added some much-welcome refreshment to the mix.

Once again the CBD gave a different feel to traditional nicotine, but I was more used to it at this point and enjoyed it quite a lot.

Overall, these disposables from MOODBAR were a tasty and convenient way to enjoy the benefits of CBD.

They provided a great way to try the cannabinoid for the first time and were super simple and easy

disposable. This offering from Vapes Bars combines ripe mangoes with juicy pineapple and tangy oranges to create a delicious and balanced taste profile. The inhale was sweet and fruity and the vapour production was smooth and consistent…a brilliant vaping experience allround.

Blackcurrant Mango

This disposable was defined by a delightful combination of sweet mango and tangy blackcurrant flavours. From the very first puff, I was treated to a burst of juicy mango that was perfectly complemented by the tartness of the blackcurrant. The flavour was perfectly mixed and wasn’t too overpowering, making it an excellent choice for those who enjoy fruit-flavoured vapes.

Blueberry Pomegranate

Pomegranate is one of those more obscure flavours that seems to be popping up more often these days. The inhale was filled with juicy blueberries that were perfectly complemented by the tartness of the pomegranate on the exhale. The flavour profile was a well-balanced mix, with neither of the fruits overpowering the other. Overall, it’s an extremely well crafted flavour that I could easily see myself going back to again and again.

Words: Alex Shenker

Fresh Mint

If you’re a fan of refreshing minty flavours, then the Fresh Mint from Vapes Bars is a great option for you. The first thing I noticed when I took a puff was the cool, crisp mint taste which made the vape smooth and fullbodied. Sometimes, you just need a break from all the fruity flavours out there – something to reset your palate and revitalise your tastebuds - and this may well be the perfect vape for that.

Caribbean Crush

Tropical. Refreshing. These are just two words that describe the delightful flavour on display in this

From the first puff, I was treated to a sweet and juicy watermelon flavour that was perfectly complemented by a cool menthol finish. The combination of sweet and refreshing flavours created a truly satisfying taste that was just so moreish. I really have to compliment Vapes Bars on its choice of concentrates for the watermelon flavour because it tasted extremely authentic with no artificial or harsh notes whatsoever.

This delicious vape paired the sweetness of cola with a refreshing icy hit to create a dynamic and delectable vape experience. The inhale was filled with rich cola flavour that was expertly partnered with a cool menthol exhale. Cola and ice really are the perfect duo and this is one of those vapes that gets the balance between the two just right. This disposable was probably my favourite out of this fantastic range and I can definitely see myself using this one again.

Rampage - Campfire S’mores

This flavour is a rarity and I was pleasantly surprised at just how well this complex e-liquid came across. The primary taste was sweet notes of fluffy and creamy melted marshmallows which went down a treat…I imagine this would be a hit with dessert fans. I didn’t notice a huge amount of chocolate flavouring in this e-liquid, but it did have a smooth and well-rounded biscuit element which largely completed the s’more profile.

Krypto Cherry

Boasting a diverse selection of fruity, aromatic, cold and creamy tastes, this Krypto Cherry flavour truly left me in awe. The vivacious blend of grapes offered a mouth-watering level of sweetness and tart that dominated the inhale. This was followed by a bright punch of cherry. Now, I’m not usually a big fan of liquorice, but its presence here really balanced out the whole flavour to create an impressive and unique e-liquid.

Super Blue Senses

Delightful and easy to enjoy, this e-liquid combined berries with a soft, sweet undertone of yoghurt. The blueberry and

blue raspberry flavours in this juice were sharp and strongly contrasted its yoghurt pairing. As the most complex of this collection of flavours – in my opinion - I thoroughly enjoyed the alternative taste profile the Super Blue Senses liquid offered.

Super Mango Lime

This is brilliant tropical flavour offered a blend of exotic fruit notes and smooth, creamy yoghurt. As suggested by the name, juicy mango was the primary flavour here, driving the taste of the whole e-liquid and giving off a refreshing cocktail vibe. This offering from King Kong Vape Juice also featured an ever so slight touch of banana and a zingy addition of lime.

Power Pear

The notes of pear on display here were sweet and intensely juicy, coming together with the crisp green apple in perfect flavourful harmony. Once again, the fruit notes were smoothed out by a creamy base of yoghurt…and it worked brilliantly. What I really enjoyed about this particular flavour was the way that sweet and sour interacted and worked together to create an incredibly one of a kind e-liquid.
