LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
The vaping industry has seen some huge successes over the past few months, with Public Health England’s seventh review marking another victory for harm reduction.
Time and again the science has reinforced vaping as a successful quitting tool, and yet, news of this ground-breaking study barely made the headlines in the mainstream media.
Instead we were treated to an unfounded scare story in The Sun and Daily Mail that suggested that the open vape systems, much loved by vapers the world over, were under threat in the UK. They are not.
It is misinformation and sensationalism in the media that leaves smokers cautious about making the switch to less harmful alternatives, for fear they would be putting themselves more at risk instead of improving their health. This is one of the reasons why vaping rates have levelled off in the UK and, unless urgent action is taken to educate smokers that there are better nicotine alternatives available to them, smokers will still die needlessly early. Thankfully, the UK government has a golden-opportunity to act now and it is one which must not be squandered.
As we report in this issue, the ongoing review of the UK’s Tobacco and Related Products Regulations allows us to set our own path on vaping policy for the first time since Brexit.
The UKVIA has put together a comprehensive series of reforms it would like the government to adopt – reforms which would ensure the UK remains the world leader when it comes to tobacco harm reduction and which will surely save lives.
It is also great to see UK vape stores back open again and giving a much-needed service to communities across the country. With the enormous success of the government’s COVID vaccination program –43 million doses have been administered at time of writing – I hope we can now have some certainty that vape stores will not have to endure any more disruptive stop-start cycles caused by lockdowns.
Finally, our most recent VOXPO Vape Live event coincides with global VApril festivities, making this a month where the industry can really come together to celebrate the live-saving technology of e-cigarettes.

SHORTFILLS
Three pages filled with short vape-related stories and research making news from around the world.
WHO POLICY ‘DEFIES ALL LOGIC’
World Health Organization proposals to outlaw open vape devices could put millions of vapers at risk by forcing them back to cigarettes, say critics. Nancy Loucas, from Asia Pacific pro-vape body CAPHRA, said the move ‘defies all logic’ but was consistent with the WHO’s longstanding antivape agenda. She said: “If countries adopt the ban on opensystem vapes, years of hard work by ex-smokers, as well as good public policy, will be rendered meaningless.”

SMOKE-FREE WORLD
Smoking may be a thing of the past after new data suggests cigarettes could be obsolete within a generation. Experts predict that, if people continue to switch to less harmful alternatives such as vaping, many countries could be smoke-free by 2050. Analyst Owen Bennett said: “With regulators and tobacco ambitions increasingly aligned…no smokers within a generation could become a reality. “If smoke-free is to happen, it is only achieved with the support of reduced risk products.”
SERIAL KILLINGS, SNAKES AND CIGARETTES
Hit BBC drama ‘The Serpent’ sparked outrage amongst anti-tobacco groups after being accused of ‘promoting chain smoking’. The show, which recounts the crimes of serial killer Charles Sobhraj, saw 220 cigarettes smoked in just eight episodes – one every two minutes. Jenna Coleman - who plays Sobhraj’s girlfriend - was the biggest culprit, lightingup 47 times. Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) chief executive Deborah Arnott said: “Exposure to images of smoking makes it harder to quit…whether the smokers are heroes or villains doesn’t make a difference.”
CHINESE VAPE THREAT
The Chinese vape industry is under threat after the government plans to regulate it the same way as traditional cigarettes. The move would treat vape businesses as tobacco companies, potentially halting the rapid growth of the sector. Manufacturers may also need special selling permits and could face increased taxation under the proposed changes. Experts say that while they ‘applaud’ the regulation of the vaping industry, they’re ‘baffled’ that the government has prioritised this over crucial measures against cigarettes.
FOLLOW THE UK
Malaysian policymakers are being urged to develop progressive regulations following new evidence in favour of e-cigarettes. The call comes after the latest Public Health England report identified vaping as the most popular and successful quitting aid for UK smokers. Syed Azaudin Syed Ahmad, Malaysian Vaping Chamber of Commerce president, said: “Malaysia must acknowledge the growing evidence that shows vaping is an effective quitting tool.
“The industry has significant potential that can be unlocked with practical and comprehensive regulation.”
EVERY VAPE YOU TAKE (I’LL BE WATCHING YOU)
TAXED INTO OBLIVION?
Vapers in West Virginia could see a 50ml bottle of e-liquid taxed at $50, in a move which could price vape products out of the market.
Lawmakers want to increase the tax burden from 7.5 cents to $1 per millilitre –a hike of more than 1,200 percent – and, if approved, could come into effect in July. Critics say there is no justification in taxing vape products more harshly than tobacco products – such a high effective tax rate does not even apply to cigarettes in New York City or Chicago.
ENGLAND’S £40 BILLION MISS
England will miss its “smoke-free by 2030” target by at least 21 years, costing the NHS an additional £40 billion, suggests new data.
The Vape Club research found that 97 percent of the country will fail to meet projections, with only four counties achieving the goal.
Dan Merchant, Vape Club owner, said: “To have a chance of meeting the government target, it’s important that smokers are correctly advised about the available routes to quitting, including the huge harm reduction benefits of vaping.”
KEEP IT RATIONAL
A Thai man could be charged for breaching consumer protection laws after allegedly selling illegal reduced risk alternatives such as e-cigarettes and other vaping products.
Banglamung police conducted a sting operation involving multiple officers, who seized six devices and 33 bottles of e-liquid from the market store owner. Advocacy groups continue to lobby against Thailand’s strict anti-vaping laws, but the ban on harm reduction remains firmly in place, with officials claiming it as an effort to ‘protect public health.’
SUN, SEA, SAND BUT NO SMOKING
Smoking will be banned at four of Barcelona’s most popular beaches in a bid to promote a ‘healthier, smoke-free city.’ It will run from May to September and, if successful, could be made permanent and extended to the city’s other six beaches as well as parks and bus stops next year. The restriction aims to improve Barcelona’s air quality and protect public health. Officials say it is not designed to punish smokers and won’t result in a direct fine for non-compliance.
Vapers have criticised Health Canada over plans to impose a 20mg nicotine cap on e-cigarettes. Consumer group Rights4Vapers submitted 2,000 letters calling for ‘a rational and pragmatic’ approach to improving public health. A Rights4Vapers spokesperson said: “Nicotine caps may not seem like a big deal, but they are to vapers.
“We’re calling on Health Canada to include the voice of Canadian vapers in this and any future regulatory process.”
KEEP YOUR MITTS OFF OUR FLAVOURS
Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney is once again campaigning to remove flavoured e-liquids from store shelves across the USA. The call came during the confirmation hearing of Surgeon General nominee, Vivek Murthy, with Romney citing alleged youth uptake as reason for the move. The Republican Senator previously introduced legislation to ban flavoured vape products from sale in 2019, but the bill failed to gain enough support and was dropped.
GLOWS BOTH WAYS
Innokin says it has invented the world’s first vapourizer to use alternating current to “extend coil lifespan and enhance flavour.” It says the revolutionary “fourth generation vape technology” found in the Innokin Sensis gives users more control over device settings and enhances e-liquid quality. Earlier generations of vaporizers all used direct current to power coils in a single direction while AC mode sends electricity through the coil in both directions. The company said it was “looking forward to discovering the full potential of this exciting new technology.”
FEASIBLE AND HIGHLY EFFECTIVE
Vaping high-strength nicotine could be crucial in helping smokers with schizophrenia quit, according to new research. “Smoking is the primary cause of the 15-25 years mortality gap between users of mental health services and the general population,” said Riccardo Polosa, one of the lead researchers. “This study demonstrates that switching to highstrength nicotine e-cigarettes is a feasible, highly effective smoking cessation method for smokers who have schizophrenia.”
EX-SMOKERS ‘AT RISK’
CANADA: Prince Edward Island (PEI) policymakers have implemented a ‘harmful’ flavour ban, ignoring both the science and warnings from advocacy groups. The ban, which began in March, was criticised for forcing vapers back to cigarettes and putting a strain on public health.
Darryl Tempest, Canadian Vape Association (CVA) Executive Director said: “PEI has effectively put 90 percent of ex-smokers at risk of returning to tobacco… the CVA is deeply saddened by the ban on flavoured vape products.”
PROTECT OUR VAPE SHOP OWNERS
New Zealand policymakers are being urged to reconsider proposed regulations amid safety fears for Kiwi vape retailers. Nancy Loucas of the Aotearoa Vapers Community Advocacy (AVCA) highlighted that there is already a scourge of smash-and-grab burglaries effecting the industry. She stressed that limiting the sale of flavours to specialist stores could put a bigger target on e-liquids, with the proposed bill making vaping products “more expensive and increasingly sought after by criminals.”

UKVIA lobbies government to implement comprehensive changes to TRPR as first test of its post-Brexit independence
Words:The British government is being urged to move quickly to protect the UK’s billionpound vaping industry by introducing bespoke legislation to help smokers quit.
A review of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR) is currently underway, which could reshape the country’s approach to harm reduction.
The UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) says this brings an ideal opportunity for a post-Brexit Britain to “demonstrate its legislative independence outside of the EU.”
It said: “The review of the TRPR should be used to further accelerate the potential role of vaping as an effective way of reducing smoking rates and improving public health.”
Patrick Griffin and Jordan Millar
In its comprehensive ‘Blueprint for Better Regulation’ report, the UKVIA calls for:
• Government-approved, expert health claims on products, to encourage smokers to switch; greater opportunities to engage with smokers, as current restrictions deter those who may otherwise switch;
• expanding existing regulations to cover non-nicotine e-liquids and
• product size changes to reduce plastic waste.
UKVIA Director General John Dunne said: “The rest of the world is looking to the UK for guidance and to lead by example.”
Andrej Kuttruf, CEO of vape retailer EVAPO, said: “More than 45 percent of the population still thinks vaping is equally or more harmful than smoking, but under
EU regulations we can’t communicate the health benefits of vaping to smokers.”
The UKVIA said its proposed changes would also help the government meet its ‘smoke-free 2030’ target.
It highlighted the damaging effect of negative information about vaping, calling
for “largescale public health campaigns” to encourage smokers to switch.
Dunne said: “A first step in challenging misinformation, should begin with the government, public health experts and the industry agreeing a set of approved switching messages and health claims.”
The UKVIA also wants enhanced training for health care professionals so that they could better communicate the relative harm reduction benefits of vaping to adult smokers.
Pro-switching messaging on cigarette packets and “a more ambitious Governmentled communications campaign” to explain the potential harm reduction of switching to vaping are also high on the UKVIA’s reform wish list.
It wants the government to close an existing loophole so that all e-liquids, including those that don’t contain nicotine, are covered by the TRPR.
“Regulating all e-liquids in this way will ensure that manufacturers are deterred from adding unregulated ingredients into their e-liquids and that consumers are better protected,” said the vape trade body.
The UKVIA argued that the current 10ml bottle size should be scrapped in favour of proportionate nicotine concentration in larger bottles that aligns with TRPR regulations.
The vape trade body also called for the 2ml tank limit to be increased to a maximum of
5ml. It also wants regulations to ensure that e-cigarette branding and packaging doesn’t inadvertently appeal to non-smokers or young people.
However, the association argued flavours were vital in helping smokers quit, urging the government to ensure that adult smokers have access to a range of flavours.
John Dunne said: “Just because someone is of a more advanced age doesn’t mean that we don’t like flavours. Having an array of flavours is one of the things that helps ensure that vapers don’t go back to smoking.”
The UKVIA also wants future regulations to prevent vape companies from using “youth-appealing branding, as well as egregious youth-appealing flavour names and descriptors.”
It added: “The UKVIA takes its role in this effort seriously and continues to
develop further guidance to reinforce our commitment to creating a responsible industry which is effective in supporting adults in their smoke-free journey.”
It also wants online vape retailers to be allowed to offer product promotions on their websites, or via email with customers, allowing the UK vaping industry to adapt to changing circumstances and consumer habits.
“Online vape retailers must be able to not only highlight the latest evidence to adult smokers, but to also work with them in assessing their vaping needs to ensure a successful switching attempt.
“Allowing responsible retailers and manufacturers to promote their products and services as well as highlighting the health and cost benefits of making the switch to e-cigarettes, could be critical to the category’s overall impact in reducing smoking prevalence.”
“The rest of the world is looking to the UK for guidance and to lead by example.”
VAPING ‘CRUCIAL’ TO HELP SMOKERS QUIT
Combining vaping products with stop smoking service support should be available to all people who want to quit smoking, says Public Health England report.
Words: Patrick GriffinNicotine vaping products could have a “crucial role” in reducing smoking’s massive adverse health impact, according to the latest Public Health England e-cigarette report.
While smoking remains the single biggest risk factor for death and years lived in ill-health in England, the report pointed to an obvious solution for many. It said: “Alternative nicotine delivery devices, such as nicotine vaping products, could play a crucial role in reducing the enormous health burden caused by cigarette smoking.”
The government wants to see the end of smoking in England by 2030 with smokers “quitting or moving to reduced risk nicotine delivery systems, such as vaping products.”
However, if the goal is to be achieved, the report said more resources would be needed to help smokers quit and possibly new laws requiring tobacco manufacturers to finance a ‘Smokefree
2030 Fund’.
Vaping among young people
The report said: “Vaping and smoking prevalence among young people in England both appear to have stayed the same in recent years and should continue to be closely monitored.
“Enforcement of age of sale regulations for vaping (and smoking) needs to be improved.
“Misperceptions of the relative harms of smoking and vaping should be addressed.
“More research is needed on the addictiveness of different types and strengths of nicotine vaping products among young people and the extent to which they are using illegal products.”
Vaping among adults
Smoking among adults in England continues to fall and there is an estimated six to seven million smokers in the country compared to 2.7 million adult vapers.
The most common reasons for vaping
were to: quit (29.7 percent), stay off (19.4 percent) or reduce (11.2 percent) smoking tobacco.
Most vapers (around 75 percent) used tank models while fruit (31.6 percent), tobacco (25.2 percent) and menthol/ mint (20 percent) were the most popular flavours used.
The report said: “The proportion of long-term vapers is increasing over time and further research into this group is needed. All smokers should be supported to stop smoking completely, including dual users.
“A greater emphasis needs to be placed on how best to communicate evidence of relative harm to smokers so that they can consider all the options available to them to quit smoking completely.”
Effect of vaping on smoking cessation and reduction
The report showed that nationally representative survey data had found that:
Using a vaping product is the most
popular aid used by people trying to quit smoking.
Vaping is positively associated with quitting smoking successfully. In 2017, over 50,000 smokers stopped smoking with a vaping product who would otherwise have carried on smoking.
The extensive use of vaping products in quit attempts compared with licensed medication suggests vaping products may reach more people who smoke and
so have more impact.
The report said: “Compared to the 2018 review, there is stronger evidence in this year’s report that nicotine vaping products are effective for smoking cessation and reduction.
“Combining vaping products (the most popular source of support used by people making a quit attempt in the general population), with stop smoking service support (the most effective type
of support), should be an option available to all people who want to quit smoking.
“Local authorities should continue to fund and provide stop smoking services and all stop smoking services should have a consistent approach to using vaping products.
“Further research is needed into the barriers and enablers to using vaping products as part of a supported quit attempt in stop smoking services.”
Greater emphasis is needed to communicate evidence of relative harm to smokers so that they can consider all options available to quit smoking completely.

EU chiefs urged to revise its new cancer plan to reflect the role vaping can play in saving lives
Words: Patrick GriffinThe European Union has been accused of having “a religious antipathy towards anything that resembles smoking” and should do more to encourage vaping instead.
US-based health care policy expert Jeffrey A. Singer says the EU should promote vaping to smokers as part of its ambitions new plan for cancer prevention, treatment and care.
The new EU cancer strategy recognises that
smoking is the main risk factor for cancer death in Europe but fails to recognise the important role that vaping can play in saving lives.
Mr Singer said: “If they’re really interested in reducing cancer in Europe, then they should take a page out of what Public Health England has done, and actually promote vaping as a means of getting off tobacco smoking because they seem to be too heavily focused on nicotine.
“The cause of cancer from smoking comes
from the carcinogens in tobacco smoke and not from the nicotine it contains.”
Referring to the EU’s approach, the Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute think tank in Washington, DC, added: “This is almost a religious antipathy towards anything that resembles smoking when we should be focusing on the harmful effects of smoking instead.
“This is ironic as Europe is so far ahead of the United States when it comes to appreciating harm reduction for a lot of other illicit substances including opioids and cocaine.
“The EU gets harm reduction much better than they do in the US and yet, in this one area, they have this blind spot.”
He was speaking at a webinar organised by European Students for Liberty called ‘Vaping: Escaping Paternalistic Doctrine’ alongside UKVIA director general John Dunne and World Vapers’ Alliance director Michael Landl.
Webinar host Liza Katsiashvili said vaping was one of several industries which could face “severe restrictions” under the European Commission’s plan.
John Dunne said vape regulations should not be so broad that they restrict freedoms
of choice of consulting adults.
He said: “Overall, I’m in favour of a cancer plan. I lost both of my parents to cancer, so I have first-hand knowledge.
“But if you look at it from the vaping perspective, vaping is not smoking, there is no combustion going on with vaping at all but what this European Commission has basically done is ignored science.
“They have gotten totally on the moralistic antinicotine perspective.
Taxation of vaping products will drive the cost up and make it less accessible to smokers looking to make a better choice in their lives.”
He described flavour bans as a “huge, huge mistake” adding: “Flavours encourage smokers to make a choice to disassociate themselves from tobacco and the tobacco taste.
“They are also crucial in keeping them from switching back to tobacco. If you are limited to tobacco e-liquid flavours, vapours will quickly get bored with that, so there’s
a good chance they could revert back and that’s totally opposite to what vaping is trying to do.”
Michael Landl said the EU was in complete denial about the harm-reduction concept by making the mistake of equating smoking with vaping. He said: “As it stands this version of the EU cancer plan will not be helpful in the fight against cancer. The main problem is that the concept of harm reduction is completely missing.
“We all know that this very old zero tolerance approach is not very successful. This plan has idealised goals for a tobacco-free world instead of practical solutions to the problem.”
John Dunne said it was a “skewed public health message” where governments sought to raise vape taxes to replace the funds they were losing from tobacco revenue.
He said the lower cost of vaping compared to smoking was one of the main factors for
smokers to switch, while Michael Landl said such policies disproportionately impacted low-income groups as they tended to have the highest smoking rates.
Mr Singer, who is also a medical doctor, accused many politicians of having “an emotional antipathy towards anything that resembles smoking.”
He said raising taxes only encouraged a vaping black market adding: “If I was a smuggler of vaping equipment, I would definitely lobby for the tax to go up because this would help my business.”
“If they’re really interested in reducing cancer in Europe, then they should take a page out of what Public Health England has done, and actually promote vaping.”

This product may contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance.SERIOUSLY… WHO FALLS FOR THIS NONSENSE?
While reports that e-cigarettes are under threat in the UK have been dismissed, harm reduction advocates have highlighted the dated vaping policies of the WHO.
Words: Jordan MillarWe are happy to make one thing crystal clear to the UK’s 3.2 million vapers…the government is not about to ban e-cigarettes. Despite totally unfounded scare stories in the national press, the government has no plans to remove the most popular vaping products on the market from sale.
The Sun on Sunday recently reported that ‘millions of Brits face e-cigarettes being outlawed’ if the government acts on the recommendations of a World Health Organization (WHO) report.
The article claimed that the WHO was campaigning for UK policymakers to ban open vape systems, amid potential safety fears.
This was immediately criticised by vape advocacy groups, who dismissed the ‘alarming and misleading’ article as fake news.
The Independent British Vape Trade Association (IBVTA) was first to the punch, expressing its disappointment with the Sun’s unverified claims.
It said: “The Sun newspaper published an extremely misleading article about vaping which has since been picked up by the Daily Mail and some other news outlets.
“It would be highly unlikely that the Government would pivot from their current supportive position on the basis of advice from the WHO.
“This story appears to be a non-story… misleading at best and an outright case of ‘fake news’ at worst.”
What’s perhaps most shocking is that it would’ve taken The Sun just one phone call to obtain the government’s official position.
But that would have meant the entire ‘exclusive’ story would have fallen apart at the seams.
When asked if they planned to outlaw open vape devices – which are used by almost 80 percent of UK vapers – the Department of Health replied: “We have no plans to ban e-cigarettes or vaping. “Smoking is still the leading preventable
cause of premature death and disease –killing almost 75,000 people in England in 2019.
“The best thing a smoker can do is to stop smoking altogether and evidence shows vaping is one of the most effective ways of getting people to do just that, helping around 50,000 people to quit the habit a year.”
So, while there is no truth in the report that UK vapers will see their open systems banned, the WHO is not totally off the hook (see following article) and is known for its longstanding anti-vaping stance.
The WHO has an extensive and public history of ignoring the science when it comes to e-cigarettes, which has put it at odds with the vaping industry time and time again.
In fact, if it continues to play fast and loose with its treatment of less harmful alternatives, advocates warn the WHO risks being labelled “an enemy of harm reduction.”
John Dunne, Director General of the UKVIA, said: “While the WHO is scheduled to hold a crucial summit on vaping in November, it continues to find itself at odds with health and industry advocates.
“Certain WHO positions are now so out of date, and so thoroughly refuted by the experts, that they may as well be saying the earth is flat.”
Dunne highlighted the organisation’s claims that there is ‘little evidence’ to prove vaping helps people quit smoking, despite new research from Public Health England (PHE) proving otherwise.
In its 2021 review, PHE found that e-cigarettes were both the most popular, and one of the most successful quitting methods amongst UK smokers.
“For the WHO to hold such contrary views is either bad science or bad faith,” said Dunne.
He continued: “Vaping’s success as an industry, and its potential for public health improvements, is built on empowering personal choice.
“Different systems, styles and flavours give consumers the options they need to leave combustible cigarettes behind.
“I would urge the WHO to engage with vapers, to hear their stories and discover the life-changing decisions they’ve made in their lives. Prohibition is simply not the answer.”
Certain WHO positions are now so out of date, and so thoroughly refuted by the experts, that they may as well be saying the earth is flat.
OPEN SYSTEMS ARE UNDER ATTACK…
Words: Patrick GriffinThe World Health Organization report which sparked the Sun’s “Vaping to be BANNED in UK” story, is an attack on open systems and makes worrying reading for vapers.
It calls for bans on:
• all activities related to the commercial marketing of electronic nicotine delivery systems…including in social media and through organisations funded by and associated with the tobacco industry and electronic nicotine delivery systems and • electronic non-nicotine delivery systems over which the user can control device features and liquid ingredients (that is, open systems)
While the UK supports using e-cigarettes (whether closed or open systems) to help smokers quit, there are many governments which take the opposite view.
The WHO can be highly influential when lawmakers develop vaping policy, with around 40 countries imposing vaping restrictions or outright bans.
The World Vapers’ Alliance said the WHO’s stance offered “a slew of options that have nothing to do with improving public health or helping people quit smoking.”
Its director, Michael Landl, told Vapouround: “These recommendations are nothing less than an attack on vapers, and unfortunately also on public health.
“Open systems have allowed millions to quit. A proposal to ban them would be irresponsible and would drive a lot of consumers back to cigarettes.
“To recommend countries prohibit proper communication about risks of different products is equally absurd. Vaping is less harmful than smoking, smokers have the right to know this and public authorities have a responsibility to communicate it.”
Landl also wrote to the WHO’s Executive Board, expressing his organisation’s concerns at its recommendations.
He wrote: “Scientific evidence and real-life experience from millions of vapers worldwide clearly shows that vaping is a highly successful cessation instrument for many people.
“The UK is considered one of the most liberal countries when it comes to vaping.
“It is estimated that 196 million adults in 60 countries could switch from smoking to less harmful vaping if a similar approach towards vaping would be implemented in these countries.”
…but UK vapers have nothing to fear, as our government is having none of it.
“ “
VAPEFRIENDLY EUROPE: THE END?
EU
Words: Patrick GriffinForthcoming revisions of the EU’s Tobacco Products and Tobacco Taxation directives, could deal a double blow of misery for Europe’s vapers.
Regulators could use the shake up to impose new vape taxes and toughen up the existing regulations as part of the new EU Beating Cancer Plan.
Critics say the logic is flawed because the plan fails to differentiate between cigarettes and new-generation nicotine products such as vaping.
It is feared that instead of protecting the health of European smokers – one of the key groups targeted in the EU initiative – it will actually lead to more deaths by encouraging vapers to return to smoking.
European Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, explained the approach at a webinar entitled: “Ending Tobacco epidemic – an essential step for beating cancer.”
She said: “Our understanding of how tobacco smoke damages our health has never been greater.
“Yet smoking rates in the EU remain high, at around 25 percent and now, new products like electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco products and nicotine pouches are entering the market.”
She said Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan proposed “bold and ambitious actions on prevention” through reducing tobacco use to achieve a smoke-free generation in Europe by 2040.
The health commissioner added: “To meet this target, this means enforcing EU tobacco legislation more strictly and helping it keep pace with new developments so that it can address the endless flow
of new products entering the market.
“We will start by reviewing the Tobacco Products Directive to make product regulation stricter, the Tobacco Taxation Directive to increase tobacco taxes and the rules on cross-border tobacco purchases.”
She said the proposals also included updating the Council Recommendation on Smoke-Free Environments to emerging products, such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products and creating more smoke-free environments.
The commissioner went on: “We must focus on vaccination, environmental and behavioural risk factors, including tobacco use.
“Over a quarter of all cancers are attributed to tobacco use. With no tobacco use, nine out ten cases of lung cancer could be avoided.”
lawmakers want to impose stricter regulation and higher taxes on reduced-risk nicotine products

WANT TO QUIT SMOKING…?
Words:New research from King’s College London outlines the ‘clear benefits’ of daily e-cigarette use, highlighting the efficacy of refillable systems as cessation tools.
The study, funded by Cancer Research UK, compared data from a survey of almost 1,200 people, including smokers, vapers and exsmokers who had quit within the last year.
It found that, when used daily, refillable e-cigarettes were up to five times more likely to help people stop smoking than going cold turkey. It also showed that people who used disposable cartridges to kick the habit could increase their chances of success threefold.
Lead author Dr Máirtín McDermott said: “These findings are in line with previous research, showing that e-cigarettes are a more effective aid for quitting than nicotine replacement therapy and prescribed medication.”
He stressed the importance of frequency, pointing out that consistency plays a key role in any quitting attempt.
Despite continued evidence indicating the harm reduction benefits of e-cigarettes, the number of smokers taking up vaping has begun to plateau.
This is often attributed to negative coverage in the mainstream media and the “anti-vaping” stance of bodies including the World Health Organization (WHO), which has been accused of ‘disregarding
the science’ in its advice about e-cigarettes.
As a result, tobacco smoking still remains the leading preventable cause of death and serious illness, killing an estimated 75,000 Brits in 2019 alone.
Dr Leonie Brose of King’s College London said: “Despite the World Health Organization’s cautious stance on e-cigarettes, studies like ours show they are one of the most effective quitting aids available.
“The WHO is especially concerned about refillable e-cigarettes, as these could allow the user to add harmful substances or higher levels of nicotine.
“However, we’ve shown that refillable types, in particular, are a very effective quitting aid when used daily, and this evidence should be factored into any future guidance around their use.”
Despite the WHO’s cautious stance on e-cigarettes, studies like ours show they are one of the most effective quitting aids available.
…try using refillable vape systems instead - scientists say this method is up to five times more successful than other quitting tools.

Words: Jordan Millar
When you’ve gotta vape, you’ve gotta vape.
It’s easy to get caught out having a crafty vape at work, especially when you’ve still got an hour left on the clock and you’re craving something sweeter than the office coffee.
Fox News host Sean Hannity recently fell victim to this innocent mistake. However, he did it while live on air with millions of viewers watching.
As the show returned from a commercial break, he could be seen lost in thought with a small pod device in his mouth. Hannity continued to vape until an offscreen colleague whispered “Sean, Sean,” and the penny finally dropped. He quickly whisked the device from his lips before regaining his composure to usher in the next segment where he greeted viewers with a sheepish “uh oh.”
Fans of the show quickly took to social media, sharing their thoughts about his onair blunder:
“I’ve always called him a boomer’s newscaster. Might have to eat my words. Guy’s a legend now.”
“I definitely did not have ‘Sean Hannity blowing Juul clouds on air’ on my 2021 BINGO card”
“Sean Hannity sucking on his Juul like it’s an 1870’s pipe lololol”

The Young Turks - a progressive YouTube news show - jokingly dubbed Hannity ‘Darth Vaper’ in their follow up commentary, with host Cenk Uygar saying he might prefer Sean’s ‘break’ persona to his on-air personality.
Uygar said: “Of course, what America really wants to know is; what is he vaping?”
This isn’t the first time the right-wing TV personality has been caught out on-air, as footage of him smoking during the video segment of an episode surfaced online in 2017.
When reminded of his previous slip up, Hannity laughed it off, telling his colleague Laura Ingraham: “Enjoy it, everybody, at my expense…I have a good sense of humour.”

DEMOCRATS PUSH FOR OUTRIGHT FLAVOUR BAN
America’s vape market has become increasingly restrictive in the past two years
Words: Gordon StriblingDemocratic lawmakers in the US have written to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to urge the regulator to remove all flavoured vape products from the market. The 43 House Democrats sent the letter to Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock on March 23.
The agency is reviewing thousands of Premarket Tobacco Product Applications (PMTAs) from companies seeking authority to market their products in the States.
The letter, drafted by state representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Florida) and Diana DeGette (Colorado) said: “Flavoured e-cigarettes are putting a new generation of kids at risk of nicotine addiction and the serious health harms that result from tobacco use.”
The lawmakers are also calling for the current exemption for menthol and disposable products to be removed, which would leave only tobacco-flavoured products on the market.
Disposables like the Puff Bar have got around the pod flavour ban and are often advertised as containing synthetically-derived nicotine. The signatories also want to prohibit marketing that appeals to minors. They wrote: “Today, e-cigarette use by youth remains at what FDA calls ‘epidemic proportions’ and e-cigarettes have been the
most commonly used tobacco products among youth since 2014 – and flavours are a key reason why. “
We strongly recommend that the FDA’s premarket review process requires manufacturers to provide convincing evidence that their products do not increase youth use of nicotine and tobacco in ways that increase the risk of abuse and addiction among youth.” America’s vape market has become increasingly restrictive in the past two years, with city, state and federal regulators battling to control a ‘youth vaping epidemic.’ Data from the 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey found that youth use of any tobacco product is in decline after a rise in e-cigarette use in previous years.
“E-cigarettes have been the most commonly used tobacco products among youth since 2014 – and flavours are a key reason why.”

VAPE SALES BOOST BAT PROFITS
Vaping products expected to contribute to BAT’s profits for the first time this year, with the tobacco giant turning its focus to harm reduction.
Words: Jordan MillarBritish American Tobacco (BAT) is expecting to see vaping products contribute to profits for the first time this year, following an uptake in users switching to e-cigarettes.
The company has been increasingly focused on its “new categories” products, investing in its flagship Vype and Vuse brands to cater to the growing demand for safer alternatives.
Sales from new categories products rose by 15 percent in 2020 placing their annual value at £1.4 billion. BAT now has 13.5 million consumers of its non-combustible products, an increase of three million in a year.
Chief executive Jack Bowles said: “We have a clear purpose to reduce the harm footprint of our business and we are uniquely positioned to encourage the switch to reduced risk products.”
The company aims to see revenue from “new categories” products steadily rise to £5 billion by 2025.
Although only a small share of the tobacco giant’s overall revenue –which exceeded £25 billion last year – the company has highlighted the accelerating growth as a signifier
“ “
for its continued focus on harm reduction.
Chief marketing officer Kingsley
Wheaton said: “We’re very excited about the future of BAT and have set out a purpose-driven strategy to deliver a better tomorrow. “We had a great performance to that regard in 2020, seeing genuine and real momentum in consumer adoption of our new categories products.”
He added: “For me, this is a story of moving from tobacco to technology and transforming the business.”
BAT has also outlined ambitious plans to boost the number of people using its non-combustible products, with hopes to reach 50 million consumers by 2030.
“Our purpose is to encourage consumers to move from the combustible products, which cause the harm, to tobacco and nicotine alternatives,” said Wheaton. “That’s at the heart of our better tomorrow and transformation story.”
We have a clear purpose to reduce the harm footprint of our business and we are uniquely positioned to encourage the switch to reduced risk products.
VAPING ENTREPRENEUR WITH PAUL CURTIS, ZEUS JUICE
Zeus is a staple of the vaping industry, growing from a Birmingham kitchen to a globally recognised brand, but what goes on behind the scenes of this e-liquid titan?
Words: Jordan MillarAfter his wife was tragically diagnosed with cancer, Zeus Juice founder Paul Curtis decided it was high time to stop smoking.
He soon turned to vaping, where he discovered a gap in the market for strong, high-quality flavours.
Establishing his business in 2014, Paul’s endless pursuit of perfection skyrocketed the brand to the very top of the industry.
Following a series of massive successes, we caught up with Paul to see how he’s found the rapid growth of the brand, and what’s in store for the near future.
Behind all the corporate and financial rewards, what do you take away from your role within the vape industry?
The most important thing to me is helping people make the switch; converting from smoking to vaping is the reason Zeus Juice was created.
Of course, the business successes are fantastic, but knowing that Zeus has helped people improve their health and lifestyle is most important.
I have always been the kind of guy to shy away from the limelight, so I get a little embarrassed when people greet me and praise me for my juices, but I can be proud of what I have achieved.
Clearly the Zeus brand takes a page from Greek mythology, what spurred this love of myths and legends, and how has it influenced the brand?
I have always enjoyed watching films, my favourites were those based on Greek mythology: Clash of the Titans, Jason and the Argonauts, Sinbad.
My earliest efforts on brand design were pretty poor, but I had strong ideas which have now been brilliantly realised with the help of our graphic designer Tom Cato.
Influences from Greek mythology can be found in different elements of our branding from the labels, to names, to the artwork we have in the office.
Last year was filled with successes for you, how did you weather the COVID storm and come out stronger than before?
Working in the e-liquid industry, I’m sure we can agree that adapting to change comes naturally.
In terms of COVID, safety has been the top priority for us. As well as providing PPE and sanitising products across our sites, we have invested in COVID tests to provide all on-site staff with peace of mind.
Business wise, we have been quick in acting and always prepared. No one outside of Zeus knows this, but our Proper Vape and BOLT releases were actually swapped at the last minute, it felt right to launch the value range at the time when everyone wanted to save money for Christmas.
Now, with BOLT launching as lockdown lifts, the range’s colourful and summer-like presence also feels perfect.
With the review of TRPR fast approaching, which policies would you like to see change for the betterment of the UK vaping industry?
I have always believed that the vaping industry needs regulations to keep people safe, but I believe that some need alteration.
Bottle size for instance, 10ml is too small a limit, you can buy a litre of bleach which is far more dangerous.
It is sad that vaping comes under arguably more scrutiny than cigarettes, which are more harmful in the long term according to the NHS.
From a kitchen table in Birmingham to an award-winning, industry leading brand, how have you found the rapid growth of Zeus?
Once I created this monster brand, we grew by word of mouth…very quickly.
I don’t pretend to be a master businessman and the growth had many teething problems, but that’s because I wasn’t prepared for how fast it would take off.
Looking back, I don’t feel it worked out all too bad though. Now we have Tim Allinson on board and a better structure to take us forward to the next level.
Last year you launched the first line of Zeus apparel, is this a turning point for the brand or will e-liquid always be your top priority?
E-liquid is the top priority for us. Apparel is an exciting new project that followed our Best Branding and Marketing award win.
We are lucky to have such a talented, creative design team, so it only made sense to give our designs another outlet with which to wow people.
Business successes are fantastic but knowing that Zeus has helped people improve their health and lifestyle is most important.

DIARY OF A VAPER
I started smoking when I worked in pubs as a way to get more breaks during my 12-hour days. As well as their lunch hour, smokers were allowed extra breaks throughout the day to light-up.
At first, I asked a friend to buy me a packet of Marlboro so I could pretend to smoke, but by the time I was 21, I was smoking a pack every two days.
I’m really into my fitness and would regularly go rowing and visit the gym, but I continued to smoke until a friend gave me one of the old cigarette-style vapes which came in a box that looked like Marlboro Reds.
I realised I could feel a lot better and go out running without getting out of breath every five minutes and I don’t think I smoked again after that.
Within weeks I could breathe better, my sleep and fitness had improved and I got my sense of taste and smell back. I rediscovered new layers of flavour to food and I didn’t get as many colds as I did when I smoked.
I also took up kickboxing, which eventually led to an interest in CBD vaping. A lot of the MMA fighters and pro-athletes use it to help with
injury recovery and pain relief. When I first began vaping, it was completely new. I had no real ideas about it before I started and there wasn’t really a vaping industry or culture at the time.
In the early days of lockdown, when things were stressful and it felt like the sky was falling in, I did pick up some cigarettes again, but I’ve basically stopped that now as I think the worst is over and done with.
Vaping was a really great bridge for me to stop smoking and I don’t think I would have successfully quit without it.
I couldn’t have continued smoking long-term, there were too many health risks and it was limiting what I could do with my life. Vaping gave me a way out and took all that away.
“Vaping was a really great bridge for me to stop smoking and
I don’t think I would have successfully quit without it.”Featuring Alex Brown, 28, from Nottingham.
VAPING DEMYSTIFIED
Brilliant documentary by Yorkshire Cancer Research was released on No Smoking Day.
Words: Gordon StriblingIn Issue 32, we introduced our new Mythbusters series, where we confront a myth or misleading piece of information working its way through the media. Between these two issues it was No Smoking Day. This is, of course, a huge day in the vaping calendar as vapers around the country champion the solution that helped them quit. It is also the day when charities encour age smokers to consider a smoke-free life, including Yorkshire Cancer Research which released its own myth-busting documentary, ‘Vaping Demystified’.
The documentary features many of the great and good from the UK’s public health and tobacco harm reduction communities.
Familiar faces include Hazel Cheeseman of ASH, Dr Sharon Cox of UCL’s Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group and Martin Dockrell, tobacco control lead at Public Health England. The documentary surveyed 100 people from Yorkshire about vaping, with the results showing why a video like this is needed in 2021.
It found:
• Fifty six of those questioned believed vaping was less harmful than smoking
• Forty people had heard or read worrying things about vaping
• Only a third thought vaping should be pro moted for stopping smoking
• Two-thirds thought that there wasn’t enough available evidence for smokers to make the decision to switch while
• Ninety people said that the risks of vaping were ‘unclear’ to the public.
After a brief history of the e-cigarette, the documentary explored why so many people in the UK remain sceptical about vaping despite the overwhelming evidence that e-cigarettes are less harmful than tobacco and help smokers quit.
Natasha Loder, Health Policy Editor at The Economist, gave her perspective on the role the media plays in perpetuating vaping myths. Counterfactual’s Clive Bates argued that the media whipping up vaping hyste ria can be linked to a broader anti-nicotine agenda that can even be found in science journals. The media section features PHE’s brilliant demonstration comparing the effects of smoking and vaping on the lungs. The video was released at the height of the 2019 lung illness outbreak dubbed ‘EVALI’ by the CDC. Dr Cox explains that the cases
continue to be linked to nicotine e-cigarettes, with the Economist’s Loder noting that this continues to be reported as a vaping story, rather than a cannabis one despite the CDC acknowledging that the outbreak was largely linked to illicit THC products.
In one highlight of the documentary, the narrator asked whether smokers were a ‘casualty of a clash between morals and money’.
This section looked at the ongoing conflict between billionaire anti-vaping philanthro pist Michael Bloomberg, harm reduction advocates, the tobacco control community, the World Health Organization and Philip Morris International’s (PMI) controversial Foundation for a Smoke-Free World. US poli tics have undoubtedly had a huge impact on vaping in the UK, but there has been no youth vaping issue here, nor any cases of ‘EVALI’. Bates believes that the scientific community understands this which is why the UK is a world-leader in championing vaping.
Wrapping up, the experts explored what role vaping can play in helping England go smoke-free by 2030.
Vaping Demystified provided a damning expose of the misleading narratives around vaping in the UK while championing the e-cigarette’s potential for saving the lives of seven million people who continue to smoke.
This looks set to join Canadian director Aaron Biebert’s ‘A Billion Lives’ and ‘You Don’t Know Nicotine’ on the essential watchlist for vapers and sceptics alike.
PHE: VAPING IS MORE THAN NRT PROMISES
Latest PHE report once again backs vaping over patches and gum
Words: Gordon StriblingE-cigarettes are both the most popular and the most successful stop-smoking aid in England. That was the takeaway from Public Health England’s seventh vaping report, which reviewed the evidence supporting vaping for smoking cessation as well as youth use statistics and data on people’s perception of risk.
The report, carried out by researchers at King’s College London (KCL), found that: – in 2020, nicotine e-cigarettes were the most popular stop smoking aid (27.2 percent), compared to 18 percent for nicotine replacement therapy and 4.4 percent for prescription medication, – it is estimated that in 2017, more than 50,000 smokers successfully quit with the aid of an e-cigarette who would have not otherwise done so and
– using an e-cigarette in conjunction with local stop smoking services support demonstrated success rates of between 59.7 percent and 74 percent in 2019 and 2020.
Professor John Newton, Director of Health Improvement at PHE, said: “Smoking is still the leading preventable cause of premature death and disease – killing almost 75,000 people in England in 2019. The best
thing that a smoker can do is to stop smoking completely and the evidence shows that vaping is one of the most effective cessation aids available, helping around 50,000 smokers quit a year.”
The findings received support from health charities Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), both of which back vaping from a cautious perspective.
ASH chief executive Deborah Arnott said that more should be done to encourage smokers to switch if we are to achieve a smoke-free nation by 2030
Michelle Mitchell, Cancer Research UK’s Chief Executive, said:
“E-cigarettes are a still relatively new product –they aren’t risk-free as we don’t yet know their long-term impact. We strongly discourage people who haven’t smoked from using them, particularly young people.
“But research so far shows that vaping is less harmful than smoking tobacco and, as this report emphasises, can help people to stop smoking. The long-term effects of e-cigarettes are unknown, but the long-term harms of tobacco are indisputable. “Support from stop smoking services remain
the most effective way to help people quit for good. Services can help people find the tool that works for them, e-cigarette or otherwise, and give them the best chance of reducing their risk from tobacco.”
The report provides further evidence to support the UK government’s position that vaping is less harmful than smoking and can help smokers quit.
In 2020, the Cochrane Review evaluated 50 international studies involving 12,430 adult smokers.
The review found evidence that nicotine e-cigarettes were probably better at keeping former smokers tobacco-free for six months vs NRT (three studies; 1,498 people);
Nicotine e-cigarettes may help more people stop smoking than no support or behavioural support only (four studies; 2,312 people).
The authors concluded: “Nicotine e-cigarettes probably do help people to stop smoking for at least six months. They probably work better than nicotine replacement therapy and nicotine free e-cigarettes.
“They may work better than no support, or behavioural support alone, and they may not be associated with serious unwanted effects.”
The evidence shows that vaping is one of the most effective cessation aids available, helping around 50,000 smokers quit a year

PHE REPORT SHOWS VAPING PLATEAU
Experts warn that smokers are being put off by ‘unfounded safety fears’
Words: Gordon StriblingWhat is concerning is that smokers, particularly those from disadvantaged groups, incorrectly and increasingly believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking.
Public Health England’s (PHE) seventh e-cigarette report has been met with resounding industry support, but it is not all good news.
The huge positive is that vaping continues to be proven the most effective stop smoking aid around today. However, there is nothing positive about the fact that vaping levels have plateaued and misperceptions about the relative risks of vaping and smoking are a key reason for this.
Professor John Newton, Director of Health Improvement at PHE, said: “The best thing that a smoker can do is to stop smoking completely and the evidence shows that vaping is one of the most effective quit aids available,
helping around 50,000 smokers quit a year.
“Thousands more could have quit except for unfounded safety fears about e-cigarettes. The evidence has been clear for some time that, while not riskfree, vaping is far less harmful than smoking.”
In 2020, 38 percent of smokers believed that vaping was as harmful as smoking while 15 percent believed it was more so. This is despite the UK government and health charities continuing to assert that vaping is at least 95 percent less harmful than smoking.
Most experts on either side of the Atlantic
agree that vaping is much less harmful than smoking. But perceptions have shifted more and more to the negative in recent years after events in the US like the THC lung illness outbreak and the spike in teen use of vape products have painted the e-cigarette as a dangerous lifestyle product rather than a reduced risk alternative to tobacco.
Around 78,000 people die from tobaccorelated diseases each year in the UK alone.
Ann McNeill, Professor of Tobacco Addiction at King’s College London and lead author of the report, said: “What is concerning is that smokers, particularly those from disadvantaged groups, incorrectly and increasingly
believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking. This is not true and means fewer smokers try vaping.
“The goal for 2030 is to be smoke free in England. The development of a new Tobacco Control Plan and this year’s review of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 is an opportunity to ensure that the regulations around vaping are appropriate.
“The regulations are also hoped to help smokers to quit, while not attracting people who have never smoked.”
The report found that around six percent of England’s adult population (2.7 million people) vape, which is largely unchanged from 2019’s report. Meanwhile, smoking
prevalence continues to fall and varies between 13.8 percent and 16 percent across different surveys.
The vaping community is overwhelming populated by current and former smokers, with less than one percent of vapers having never smoked. Meanwhile, dual use continues to decline, suggesting that more and more vapers are successfully switching once they find the right product for them.
PHE has commissioned a full e-cigarette safety review which is set for publication in 2022. King’s College London will work alongside a team of researchers from across the UK and US to create a broad and balanced overview of the available evidence.
BLUEPRINT FOR BETTER REGULATION: WHY THE GOVERNMENT MUST LISTEN
The UKVIA has laid out its recommendations ahead of the upcoming TRPR review, but
As we report in our news section, the UKVIA has put forward its ‘Blueprint for Better Regulation’, a comprehensive list of changes to the country’s vaping policies. The report covers everything from bottle sizes to tackling misinformation and coincides with a crucial review of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR). In this feature, we explore the reasons behind the recommendations and whether the government is willing to listen and seize the opportunity to be a world leader in harm reduction.
Words: Jordan Millar and Patrick GriffinAfter news broke of the EU’s controversial ‘Beating Cancer Plan’, the European vape industry reacted in outrage, deeming the regulations ‘excessive’ and ‘dangerous.’ In response, the UKVIA advised the government to ignore ideology and instead follow an evidencebased, scientific approach to vaping legislation. John Dunne, director general of the UKVIA said: “The government has claimed that postBrexit regulatory independence will mean a new, and better, way of doing things. Now is the time for this pledge to become a reality.” He continued: “I think there is a huge opportunity for the UK to score that first Brexit goal by reviewing the TRPR and forging its own course…perhaps away from what the EU is proposing.”
In a recent press conference, Dunne told Vapouround that the UK maintains a progressive viewpoint on vaping, with Public Health England (PHE) coming under ‘constant attack’ for its assurance that e-cigarettes are 95 percent less harmful. He said: “There’s many out there who think that’s the wrong view. But PHE have consistently, year after year, reviewed all of the available evidence and come to the same conclusion. –They’re quite happy to stand their ground and I think the UK government is too.”
The question now on everyone’s mind is…will policymakers listen to the recommendations and work alongside the industry to improve
the question is…will policymakers listen?
the lives of adult smokers.
The ‘Blueprint for Better Regulation’ has already won the favour of numerous politicians and health officials, who have praised the report for offering substantiated changes to existing policies.
Former Labour MP Sir Kevin Barron said: “The ongoing consultation on TRPR is an ideal opportunity to highlight how less harmful products have improved public health.
“The current lowest recorded smoking rates have been achieved by numerous avenues including switching from tobacco to less harmful products.
“The opportunity to bring in legislation to further encourage the move should not be missed.”
Also in support is Former Health Minister Sir Norman Lamb who said: “The TRPR review offers a great opportunity to improve public health across the UK by tackling misinformation about vaping.
“It also presents an opportunity for the industry to build on the evidence-based approach, which the Government has consistently taken on vaping products.”
Dunne believes the government will remain steadfast in its mission to reduce the number of adult smokers, highlighting that, as an industry, we’ve become a crucial tool for policymakers.
He stressed that a lack of expert knowledge can lead to ineffective regulations, as not all politicians may understand the ramifications of restrictions such as flavour bans and tax hikes.
However, after years of collaboration and education, the UK government has come to understand the significance of vaping and its role in harm reduction.
“They understand that vaping is a cornerstone of success when it comes to the smoke-free Britain goals,” said Dunne.
“I think the world is looking at them and they understand that…there is a real passion
around vaping and pushing that positive health message that I don’t see dissipating.”
The UKVIA is now calling for industry leaders and local businesses to speak up and urge policymakers to adopt the changes laid out in the report.
Andrej Kuttruf, CEO of vape retailer EVAPO, said the UKVIA had “worked diligently” on the blueprint and said he hoped the UK government would come up with improved regulations to promote vaping and save more smokers’ lives.
PERFECT TIMING
Vape shops emerge from lockdown in time for VApril
Words : Gordon StriblingVape shops around the UK have reopened their doors just in time for the fourth annual VApril event.
The campaign, led by the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA), aims to educate smokers on the benefits of making the switch to the less-harmful alternative.
Last year’s campaign took place exclusively online due to lockdown restrictions. But with lockdown measures eased on April 12, this year it has been held in vape shops, too.
John Dunne, Director General of the UKVIA, said:
“The closure of retail outlets has been especially difficult for some users of vaping products who have struggled to get hold of equipment and advice that they needed and who might well have returned to smoking over the past few months.
“I am so pleased that the wider vape retail sector in England and Wales is now able to reopen its shop doors on April 12 and begin trading again.”
VApril launched online with a webinar featuring guests APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) for Vaping Chair Mark Pawsey MP, Global Legal and Regulatory Strategist at Andina Gold Corp Patricia Kovacevic and former Director of Action on Smoking and Health Clive Bates.
The VApril website also features the Switch on to Vaping Plan to help
smokers make the successful switch to the UK’s leading smoking-cessation method.
UKVIA members expressed their joy at finally being able to reopen their stores after the lengthy lockdown.
VPZ director Doug Mutter said that he was already seeing demand from smokers in the run up to the campaign.
He said: “It has been over a year now that smokers have been struggling with getting expert advice and the selection of products they need from specialist retailers.
“Vaping retailers have been the last remaining service where people can get help and advice on how best to quit smoking, so we are fully expecting a very busy couple of months.
“We are fully committed to achieving a tobacco-free country by 2030 and, with our expert staff now able to reopen the stores, we are ready to help any smoker make the switch.”
Mutter’s sentiments were echoed by Oxford Vapours managing director, Dan Greenall. Greenall expressed the key role bricks and mortar stores play in helping smokers find the right alternatives and eventually switching for good.
Greenall said: “Vaping is personal and guidance is essential to ensure a successful switch attempt. Education through brick and mortar retail is the best way to help people looking to make a switch to the less harmful alternative.
“This couldn’t have come at a better time for smokers looking to quit with the UKVIA recently launching VApril 2021 – a dedicated educational campaign to help inform adult smokers of the options available to them and to support those wanting to switch on to vaping.
“Now we can reopen our stores we are truly able help people make the switch and support the Government’s efforts for a smoke-free England by 2030.”
“With our expert staff now able to reopen the stores, we are ready to help any smoker make the switch.”

LET’S GET TOUGH ON ‘ANTI-VAPING’ WHO
UK could drastically cut its funding to the global health body unless it changes its ‘agenda-driven’ approach to reduced harm products.
Words : Jordan MillarUnless the World Health Organization (WHO) changes its “antagonistic approach” to vaping, it could face severe funding cuts from the UK.
A recent report from the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Vaping (APPG) has demanded a “fundamental change in mindset” from the WHO. It said: “If they continue to pursue an agenda-driven approach to ban reduced harm products, then the UK should consider dramatically scaling back our funding.”
Their report is the culmination of a four-month investigation into the WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) which was sparked by the organisation’s continued pursuit and support of vape bans. It also comes at a time when the UK is actually in a position to make its feelings known about the
WHO’s seemingly relentless anti-vaping stance. In previous years, the UK was forced to comply with the views of the European Union with regards to vaping.
However, the APPG say a post-Brexit Britain could not only “forge its own path in terms of legislation for reduced risk products”, but also cement itself as “a leader in pragmatic and effective health regulation.”
To that end, it calls on policymakers to leverage their newfound independence and “assert their national sovereignty” if the WHO refuses to accept its responsibility to promote harm reduction.
The report comes ahead of the ninth annual Conference of Parties (COP9), which will discuss the future of e-cigarettes and could shape the way many countries around the world approach vaping regulation.
Other key recommendations from the report include:
• Restricting any decision to ban vaping and other reduced risk alternatives to smoking.
• Establish a Working Group to look at the science and evidence for new and emerging products.
• Send experts and consumers to sit alongside Department of Health officials at the COP-9 summit.
• Ensuring openness and transparency instead of secretive decision making.
The UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) has offered its support to the APPG, applauding it for standing up to the WHO and challenging it to change its approach to harm reduction. John Dunne, Director General of
the UKVIA, said: “It is crucial that the vaping sector, and former smokers turned vapers, speak with one voice to put pressure on the WHO to change its ways.
“As the body which is meant to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable, it has a moral responsibility to do the right thing.”
Dunne highlights that e-cigarettes are only a fraction as harmful as smoking, pointing to the millions of UK vapers who’ve experienced ‘positive life changing benefits’ after making the switch. Mark Pawsey, Chair of the APPG for Vaping, said: “There is no doubt that the WHO has developed a negative stance in relation to vaping over recent years.
“We wanted to evaluate whether it remained fit for purpose in an evolved landscape where new technology has enabled new harm reduction strategies. At the COP9, the UK has a unique opportunity to champion its
progressive, successful and evidence-based, domestic policies on the global stage.”
He continued: “We are a world leader in tobacco harm reduction, and we call on the Government to defend the UK approach, challenge the WHO to stub out their ban on vaping, and help return the FCTC to its founding pillar of harm reduction.”
“As the body which is meant to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable, it has a moral responsibility to do the right thing.”
LESS THAN MARVEL-OUS
Ridicule at FDA and Marvel collaboration which portrays teen vapers as green-eyed zombies ‘possessed’ by nicotine
Words: Gordon StriblingThere’s an eerie green mist turning kids into zombies. No, it’s not the latest mustsee Netflix horror flick, it’s something far more terrifying – the ‘Mind Control Menace’ of teen vaping.
The FDA’s Real Cost Initiative began in 2016 as a way to steer teens from smoking. The new 16-page comic book, made in collaboration with Marvel Comics, follows in the recent vein of taking aim at nicotine vaping rather than tobacco or the black market THC products that sparked the EVALI outbreak.
Nicotine addiction forms the core of the campaign, with teens unable to control their actions as green vapour tentacles wrap around them. It’s reminiscent of the 2018 campaign which depicted vaping as a parasite boring into the brains of unsuspecting teens as the ‘teen vaping epidemic’ ravaged America.
Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Entertainment, said of the new collaboration: “Marvel stories have always reflected the world around us, which allows us to find meaningful ways to reach fans of every age.
“As a brand, we recognise the impact of the FDA’s mission to combat nicotine and the effect it can have on youth, and we are honoured to contribute to such an important campaign to raise awareness about the addictive nature of vaping.” The comic met with ridicule from the
tobacco harm reduction community, with some prominent figures drawing parallels with the scare tactics of 1936 propaganda film Reefer Madness and Nancy Reagan’s 1980s ‘Just Say No’ anti-drugs messaging.
Alex Wodak, director of the Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association said the new Marvel campaign sought to demonise vaping in the same way that Refer Madness demonised cannabis.
believe we are witnessing a supposedly scientific organisation going all-in on moral panic activism with homage to Reefer Madness.
“They seem to be promoting some weird sort of ‘demonic possession’ model of addiction … It would be a laughable attempt to spread alarm, but I am pretty certain it will fall flat among those at risk just because it has no contact points with reality.”
The FDA responded to the criticism levelled in an article by Filter. The organisation said that many teens who experiment with vaping are unaware of the risks and do not realise that nicotine can be present in e-cigarettes.
The spokesperson said: “The FDA carefully selected Disney and Marvel to partner with and to co-develop the comic book.
“Comic books are highly effective ways to engage with this audience. On average, teens are 251 percent more likely to have read a comic book two-to-three times a month in the past year.”
He said: “Without having to be told explicitly researchers and influential organisations realise what side their bread is buttered on and spring into action.”
Clive Bates of Counterfactual and former director of Action on Smoking and Health agreed, saying: “I cannot
According to the most recent National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), 1.8 million fewer teens were classed as current e-cigarette users in 2020 than in 2019.
However, youth use of disposable products not affected by the pod flavour ban surged by more than 25 percent, the survey revealed.
I cannot believe a supposedly scientific organisation is going all-in on moral panic activism…promoting some weird sort of ‘demonic possession’ model of addiction.

EURO MPS DON’T KNOW VAPING
Shocking lack of vape knowledge amongst some European politicians exposed in new study.
Words: Jordan MillarA ground-breaking new survey has revealed that a high proportion of euro MPs have “no knowledge” about vaping and other new nicotine products.
The MEPs, from all member states and political parties, were contacted about the survey, but only five percent replied.
The independent study - conducted by ECigIntelligence, alongside its sister company TobaccoIntelligenceuncovered the attitudes of the euro MPs towards e-cigarettes and other nicotinecontaining products.
It comes ahead of MEPs finalising the European Commission’s Beating Cancer Plan, which was criticised earlier this year for ‘allowing ideology to get in the way of science.’
Michael Landl, Director of the World Vapers’ Alliance (WVA) said: “The parliament is yet to publish their version and we call on all MEPs to take heed of the failures in the Commission’s plan. “We hope that they will treat vaping correctly and embrace it as the cessation tool that it is…we do not need another healthcare catastrophe…”
Despite the best efforts of advocacy groups like the WVA and the UKVIA, a large number of policymakers are
still misinformed about the benefits of vaping.
Although the survey found that a majority of MEPs believed new nicotine products were likely to help existing smokers quit, it also highlighted a number of alarming findings including:
· A high proportion of MEPs have no knowledge about new nicotine products.
· MEPs predominantly think that vaping is safer than smoking, but up to one in five thinks that some new nicotine products can be as risky as smoking.
· MEPs without knowledge of the
products often think that nicotine pouches are safer than smoking but tend to believe vaping is at least equally dangerous.
While a disappointing number of politicians responded to the study and those without knowledge of vaping displayed concerning views on its harm reduction benefits, it’s not all doom and gloom.
The data also showed some positive trends amongst MEPs who had a deeper understanding of the industry, hinting at a brighter future for vaping in Europe’s revised ‘Beating Cancer Plan.’

THE RISE OF COUNTERFEIT VAPES
Words: Jordan MillarIn 2020 alone, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intercepted over 26,500 vape shipments, valued at almost $1.3 billion, that failed to meet federal standards and copyright laws.
While genuine brands offer adult smokers the chance to improve their health, a scourge of counterfeit sellers are putting consumers’ lives on the line to make a quick buck.
Flavour bans and endless tax hikes only worsen the problem say experts, with more and more vapers being forced into the waiting hands of the black market.
Nancy Loucas of the Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) said: “Banning any product is not the answer, nor is applying blanket cigarette rules to all emerging products.
“Bans encourage the black market and don’t allow for proper consumer protection.”
Clive Bates, Director of The counterfactual, also commented on the relationship between overbearing prohibition and increased illegal trade,
stressing that black market behaviour is ‘unintended and unwelcome.’
He said: “The fact that no one imposing these bans has taken this into account is the same kind of dumb failure that has led us into the war on drugs.”
The US, in particular, has seen a spike in illicit products, with widespread antivape policy encouraging people to turn to underground sellers or return to more harmful tobacco cigarettes.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers recently seized a shipment of illegal vape products at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.
Over 77,000 vape pens, worth an estimated $1.55 million, were in transit from Shenzhen, China, to a distribution company in Georgia.
The devices featured imagery from popular TV show ‘Rick and Morty’, but after consulting Warner Bros. Entertainment INC, it was revealed the products were fake.
Shane Campbell, port director for
Are flavour bans and stringent regulations fuelling the vaping black market? And what does that mean for vapers and business owners?
As the vape industry has sky-rocketed over the last few years, so too has the market for illegal and dangerous counterfeit products.
Chicago, said: “Often CBP seizes vape pens because they violate FDA guidelines, but these parcels violate copyright laws, which adds to the complexity of the case.
“Counterfeit products are unsafe for consumers, harm the economy, damage the revenue and image of the companies and could cost American jobs.”
Meanwhile, police in Los Angeles have seized upwards of 660,000 counterfeit products during the raid of a downtown warehouse.
Amongst the fake merchandise were counterfeit vaping products from several well-known brands, as well as imitation video games and clothing.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed the items would have been worth a total of $7.1 million if genuine.
“Counterfeit products may be hazardous to your health,” said an LAPD press release.
“Manufacturers of counterfeit products
are not beholden to the same rigorous materials and testing standards.
“In order to prevent risk, only buy from authorised vendors or manufacturers, and do your due diligence when researching the names, places and origins of your vape product suppliers.”
But it’s not just consumers who fall victim to misleading sellers, as blackmarket businesses also kill the success of legitimate brands.
Despite complying with constantly shifting regulations and ensuring all their products meet safety standards, if a genuine brand is targeted by counterfeiters, it can cause severe problems.
UK based Komodo Vape recently called on the support of Amazon to eliminate fake products and launched a legal campaign to stop competitors stealing its branding.

THE RHODE TO BETTER REGULATION
Politicians rarely like U-turns, but when local vapers spoke out against a new flavour ban, Rhode Island state representartive Julie Casimiro changed her stance on the issue.
Words: Caroline BarryRhode Island politician Julie Casimiro was once an outspoken critic of e-cigarettes.
Concerned about media reports of EVALI deaths and the teen vaping ‘epidemic’ sweeping across America, she called for tough action from policymakers.
She voted for flavour bans, believing she was doing the right thing to protect the health of the citizens she represented.
But then, in a surprising twist…she had a change of heart.
Casimiro, who has served as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives since 2017, was moved by the impassioned pleas of local vapers.
They told her how e-cigarettes were the only thing that had helped them quit and explained how a range of flavours kept them from returning to harmful combustible cigarettes.
She said: “When all of the hospitalisations and deaths started occurring, I immediately asked for a ban on flavoured vaping products.
“But I was soon bombarded with emails, phone calls and social media posts from people who use vaping to quit smoking.
“So, I sat down with shop owners and experts in the field who quickly changed my mind.”
She also spent some time visiting local stores to observe customer habits, and soon discovered the crucial role that flavours play in helping adult smokers quit.
Julie highlighted that Rhode Island is already seeing the negative effects of the ban, similar to that of Massachusetts, which suffered a surge in black market activity and a loss in tax revenue after its prohibition of e-cigarettes.
“I’ve heard stories of people who are making their own flavoured
products in their basement and that’s not okay,” said Casimiro.
“When vaping first started, there were no regulations in place…and the knee-jerk reaction of politicians has been to ban flavours.”
Julie, alongside a lobbyist for the Vaping Technology Association, is now standing against the ban, launching her own bill that would impose more stringent regulations on the industry, but allow the sale of vital vaping products.
“The main differences between the new bill and the old one are that flavours would be allowed, but the purchasing age would be raised to 21,” said Casimiro.
“It would also regulate ingredients and nicotine potency.”
She continued: “The next stage is to get the bill out of committee and onto the house floor for a vote.
“It’s not going to be easy; I know a couple of people in the chamber will just say no and argue that we have to keep the kids safe…but what about the adults?”
For a policymaker to change their perspective after hearing the pleas of vapers is rare, especially in an age of ideology-driven regulations and baseless restrictions.
But the question now is how do we keep this momentum going?
Julie stressed that it’s about being vocal, highlighting that vapers can enact change in their own state, but they need to ask for it.
“We had a tremendous amount of people sign up with verbal testimony when the bill was heard in the house,” she said.
“Even if I hear from 10 or 20 people on one bill, that’s a lot and it gets my attention.
“It’s important for vapers to advocate for themselves. They can’t just sit back and hope for the best, they need to get out there and lobby.”

ZOOMING INTO TROUBLE
It all started with the best of intentions. Zoom meetings at the start of lockdown 1.0 meant work clothes on, make-up done and animals banished from our makeshift offices. However as we now settle into the tail end of lockdown 3.0, things have become less boardroom ready and more bedroom chic. As our homemade offices become long term options, do normal rules apply?
Many companies do not allow vaping in the workplace and send vapers outside with the smokers, but as we now host and attend meetings from our own homes is it acceptable to vape over Zoom? Sadbh is a University Research Manager in York. Prior to the lockdown, she vaped outside but never hid it from her colleagues. She said: “Most people would’ve seen me vaping on my lunch breaks or outside the office. I generally try to be fairly discreet, but that’s just out of politeness, not because I’m hiding it.” Now that she is working from home things are a little different. She said: “Firstly I am vaping a lot more, because I’m using my vape throughout the day rather than stepping out for breaks. “I haven’t had a conversation about what would be appropriate, I’ve just tried to use my judgment - if I want to vape during a meeting I’ll turn my camera and mic off briefly, then back on again after a few minutes.
Words: Caroline Barry“If anyone asks I’ll usually say I’m having Wi-Fi issues! I think I’ve possibly got a little too relaxed about it to be honest; I’ll happily vape openly on calls with colleagues I know as friends, though I’ll try to mute myself when doing so or it sounds like Darth Vader is
After a year of working from home we ask whether it is acceptable to vape while on a Zoom call with colleagues or clients.
on the call.” In a recent survey of 1,600 full time workers published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, a fifth reported vaping at work.
Employment law specialist Alex Faulkner says employers can ask employees not to vape when taking part in remote online meetings but the request must be reasonable.
He said: “If your employer wants you to stop vaping on camera, politeness may compel you to stop, or your employer could issue a reasonable management instruction to do so. This instruction carries the weight of disciplinary action if not complied with but must be reasonable given the circumstances. This means that your employer must have a good reason, which they may struggle to apply consistently.”
He said the change to remote working during the lockdown had brought up new dilemmas when it came to working etiquette. “Vaping may be unpleasant or unprofessional on Zoom calls but arguably so is wearing a dressing gown or slurping
your tea loudly.” Will an employer issue a warning to the tea slurpers? It may prove tricky for your boss to show a good reason why one is ok but the other isn’t.”
It’s not just vaping at home where an employer could take offence at, but smoking also, especially if your job is in the public eye.
In July 2020, a county councellor in Cambridge was criticised for smoking on a Zoom call from her home. Liberal Democrat Barbara Ashwood apologised after conservative councillor Steve Count posted a screenshot on Twitter and wrote: “I can’t believe what I’m seeing. We have a responsibility for public health!”
While this is an extreme example, it could be that a reaction to vaping comes down to luck. So just how bothered are non-vapers about this issue? Tom, an online lecturer, said he would not ask students to stop vaping but worried that it may be a sign of lack of concentration. He said: “I’d just feel like the other person was distracted or not engaged as much. I don’t think I would
have a problem with it realistically. I have tutorials with students so it’s whatever makes them comfortable. If we were having a staff meeting or doing presentations then it would be a little inappropriate, as it’s the kind of thing you wouldn’t do in real life in a meeting.”
So while most people don’t seem to object to a discrete vape on a Zoom call, it may be polite to ask first so as not to cause offence. Most non-vapers seem to be amused by it and @Abby_spinach posted a particularly amusing anecdote on Twitter. She wrote: “Feel connected on a psychic level to my coworker who does every Zoom meeting from her bed while vaping dramatically.”
“I’ll happily vape openly on calls with colleagues I know as friends, though I’ll try to mute myself when doing so or it sounds like Darth Vader is on the call.”
THE VAPING MONOLOGUES
In celebration of International Women’s Day, we speak to women involved in the vape industry.
Words: Caroline BarryWomen make up a huge percentage of the vaping community. In the US in 2018, it was estimated that 60 percent of women have tried vaping compared to 45 percent of men.
The industry has come a long way since it began, but is it really any better for females in the boardroom? We speak to women in different areas of the industry to hear their journeys and how their experiences differ from their male counterparts.
The Director: Emma Logan, Managing Director from JAC Vapour.
After working in marketing for 15 years, Emma was on the hunt for something more exciting, that’s when she discovered the vaping industry, where she’s spent the last nine years.
She was looking for the massive potential of a brandnew sector and JAC Vapour offered that, so she took a risk and joined the company.
“There are challenges to being female in the industry in that there is a high male bias at senior levels, but I have never had a problem making myself heard,” she said.
“The female voice is important in product development and my perspective can be different to the men.”
Emma highlighted that there is a wealth of opportunities for women in the vaping industry, with designers, web developers, chemists and more, all being able to find a place within the fast-moving sector.
The E-liquid Expert: Sadia R Tanvir Navaab, Co-founder of Avent Garde
Sadia co-founded Avent Garde in 2014, after tiring of the endless stream of sub-par, artificial-tasting e-liquids available on the market.
After months of experimenting and mixing the best ingredients she could find, she started to receive repeat orders from her family and friends, and her journey into vaping began. “I feel the industry is a lot more inclusive now than when we started,” said Sadia.
“You find fewer scantily-clad females being used as marketing tools at exhibitions and for advertising now than when it started, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.”
She underlined the stereotypical, style-over-substance, pink and rose gold products as a persistent problem, calling for vape manufacturers to cater to women’s needs instead of sticking to outdated clichés.
“Unfortunately, there will always be challenges for women in such a male-dominated industry. Our voices have to be that little bit louder to be heard.
“It is all too common for men to assume your lack of knowledge and it can be very patronising…you feel the need to constantly justify yourself.”
Sadia outlined a number of strategies to make the industry more inclusive and encourage women to make the switch to reduced risk alternatives.
These include, avoiding provocative e-liquid names and suggestive bottle designs, as well as not objectifying women in marketing materials.
She said: “We always try to employ more woman in our Vape Bar so that first time female vapers can feel confident walking in and asking for advice.”
The CBD Vape CEO: Kymberly Byrnes CEO of TribeTokes
Kymberly Byrnes discovered vaping back in 2015 and was drawn in by its functionality and ease of consumption.
She said: “As an entrepreneur, I knew this was not a trend, but a new wave of opportunity.
“I met my business partner Degelis Tufts in 2017. She had developed a plan to make clean CBD vapes with no chemicals and brought me onboard as a co-founder.”
The pair knew they had their work cut out for them, with the ‘old school male mentality’ of the industry being one of the biggest obstacles to overcome.
“All we could do was keep creating quality products and stand behind our brand. We came out ahead and started this year on a high note.”
She continued: “Vape brands can get more women involved by hiring them, supporting them and taking the initiative to target different female demographics.”

THE WEALTHY ALTERNATIVE
Words: Gordon StriblingSwitching to vaping benefits not just the health of smokers but their finances, too. And for one lucky 63-year-old, picking up that first vape proved to be instantly lifechanging.
Over the Easter weekend, Southampton meat delivery van driver John McFadden became one of several new lottery millionaires when he popped into a shop to by a vape to help him quit smoking.
McFadden said: “I knew I had to do something about my smoking. With the change from buying the vape, I bought a scratchcard and took it home.
“When I started scratching it off, it said £50,000 under the first number and I thought ‘Whoopee!’. I carried on and just kept seeing more and more £50,000s. I thought it was a lot but didn’t know what to believe.”
McFadden was understandably ‘stunned’ and ‘could not believe it was real’, so he called Camelot to check his ticket. The games company confirmed that he was indeed a winner…and that the card actually scooped the maximum £1M jackpot prize.
McFadden now plans to use his winnings to move closer to his children and grandchildren.
He said: “After my divorce, my children moved to Weymouth so now they and my grandkids all live there. I see them as much as I can but am often away driving the van.
“Having a base close to them will mean I can see them all so much more. Hopefully, the bar and hot tub I plan to have in my new back garden will also mean more fun family time.
“I’m not planning to give up work – I’m nowhere near retirement age. But I do work long hours so cutting back a bit will help me to spend more time with my family.”
The delivery driver has already treated himself to a new Skoda Kamiq to celebrate the win and is making plans to holiday across Asia.
While switching to vaping may not have such an instant and dramatic benefit to your finances as Mr McFadden’s, there’s little doubt that it will help.
A recent Scottish Grocers’ Federation roundtable event saw experts and stakeholders debate vaping and discuss the role it could play in Scotland reaching its smoke-free 2034 target.
Mark Oates, director of consumer advocacy group WeVape explained just how beneficial vaping can be on smokers’ pockets.
He said: “I think vaping works because it’s not top-down policy.
“The price is a major point. Smoking is incredibly expensive. It causes massive inequality.
“I’ve been doing some work on the effect that smoking cost has on inequality in the UK, both health and on financials,
and vaping can put £2,000 to £3,000 a year into some of the poorest people in the UK’s pockets.”
There are a few things you can do to maximise your saving when you switch to an e-cigarette.
Firstly, it’s always a good idea to invest
in a quality device from the get-go. This may mean a higher initial outlay but it will pay off in the long term. You can pick up a decent vape for under £20.
You should also make sure that you prime and regularly clean your coils which will keep them going for longer.
I knew I had to do something about my smoking. With the change from buying the vape, I bought a scratchcard and took it home.
BACK IN BUSINESS
The industry celebrates the long overdue return of vape shops
Words: Gordon StriblingThe COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world as we know it and now, more than a year later, we are just beginning to get back on our feet. The UK vape industry has been particularly hit with shops being classed as ‘non-essential’ and ordered to shut their doors.
The closures angered the industry because of the crucial services they provide in helping smokers quit and remain off harmful cigarettes.
Vape businesses across the country have had to adapt to survive, taking to the online marketplace or adopting click-and-collect services to stay afloat during the public health crisis. We spoke to brands across the UK, the EU and US to find out how they weathered the past 12 months and to hear their hopes for the industry moving forward.
lowering or offsetting rates,” he said.
“As a matter of fact, he insisted on increasing the rent, which meant that we were fast in hot water.”
The family got their heads together to work out how they could keep the operation going. They decided to get rid of the shop and move into a business unit with a warehouse where they set up an ISO 7 clean room to house automatic bottle filling, capping and labelling facilities.
“We did have a small lab at the back of the shop but realised that it’s time to diversify and truly go online only,” Steve said.
Komodo Vape has spent the months since developing its new LOUT brand, now available from the distributor Vape Supplier.
Steve said: “I would like to thank our customers for all the support and we look forward to working with them all to develop new exciting flavours and brands to market.”
A year ago, family-run Komodo Vape had a bricks-and-mortar store on a busy Cardiff high street. When the shutdown hit, founder Steve Hoskins had to re-evaluate the operation as the shop’s landlord refused to help, despite the financial hit they would inevitably take. “We suffered hugely, with our landlord not allowing us any leeway by
Flexibility has been essential to survival over the past year, with businesses of all sizes looking for new ways to support their customers unable to visit vape shops in person.
Firehouse Vape opened a new shop three weeks before the December 28 lockdown, so adopted Click and Collect and local
delivery supported by expert advice and customer care from its passionate staff.
The team is now geared up for vape shops to once again take their place as the entry point to vaping for millions of smokers.
Sales Director Amanda Egan told Vapouround: “We are looking forward to having increased footfall on the high street once more.
“We have a range of special offers back to the doorstep and a robust COVID policy to ensure they have a safe shopping experience.”
the day and we want to provide support where we can, so we are launching the EL-Science £250,000 industry support package. Scan the QR code on the front of the magazine for more info.”
Florian Vogal of German brand Barehead E-Liquids is hugely thankful to have been able to continue working over the past year with relatively few changes to the company’s day-to-day operations.
Sales shifted more online and they were able to experience monthly growth. But Florian is excited about the long-awaited return of physical vape shops which continue to play a huge role in helping smokers quit.
He said: “For so many people, this is where the information comes from and the initial consultation is key in regards to effectively switching to e-cigarette products. Now is the time to give back and support offline retailers as much as we can to help them back on their feet to continuously do the awesome work they’re doing.
“We’ve been working behind the scenes for the last couple of months to think of new ways to really help support vape shops, which we’re going to tackle and roll out soon.”
Florian is also calling on vapers to do the same.
“Support your local vape shop! We have all been affected in one way or another during this period - some more than others. That’s why we need to stand together and give back where we can. Much love to anyone who has supported BAREHEAD during this time!”
How have you found the past 12 months and how has King Kong Vape Juice adapted?
King Kong Vape Juice launched in January 2020 and the pandemic soon hit us with forecasted sales dropping by large numbers, however, we overcame this and won two awards, sold thousands of bottles online and diversified into selling PPE and hand sanitisers.
Kong Worldwide is now one of the fastest growing PPE providers together with their premium juices.
How do you feel about vape shops re-opening?
Vape retailers and wholesalers are our biggest clients and we thank Prime Minister Boris Johnson for opening them back up.
Is there anything you would like to say to your customers?
We would like to say thank you for all your continued support throughout the pandemic and we hope you continue loving our flavours.
Shaun Wedgwood is technical director of EL-Science. The e-liquid manufacturing and analysis service saw a shift in demand for its services and from customers in 17 Phoenix Vapers stores.
Shaun said: “We saw a significant drop off in TPD work but an equally significant rise in Product Risk Assessment inquiries which mirrored what we were seeing in our stores.
“Customers were commenting that they liked that we had them available in store, in a similar way to when the damaging USA media stories were circulating in 2019. There is certainly a correlation from the consumer when health is at the forefront of people’s minds.
“I think, and hope that going forward the world in general takes stock and better prepares for these “black swan” events and maybe focuses on what’s truly important rather than focusing on our differences.”
For the industry, that means focusing on making safe products for health-conscious consumers, which Shaun believes will encourage more smokers to switch.
He said: “We really believe that the industry overall is saving lives by
The Zen Vaper CEO and founder Don Thompson is in good spirits.
“I got a chance to write the largest cheque I’ve ever written in my entire life, to pay for an order that I’m shipping out to a big distributor. It made me smile because I actually have the money in the bank to cash it.
“We’re taking a couple more steps towards becoming that big boy e-liquid maker that I dreamed about being a couple of years ago.”
Things were not looking quite so hopeful a year ago. The global industry was still reeling from the EVALI outbreak and talk of a federal flavour ban had buyers running scared. Then, word got out about ‘this COVID-19 thing.’
“Little did we know, the pandemic would affect the entire world,” Don said.
“I came back from a show the weekend before the USA shutdown. I was planning on leaving the following weekend to go to Singapore for my first international show.
“I was going to go on a nine country, four continent tour to expand my business globally. And then it was like somebody pulled the plug.”
The next few months were a rollercoaster of lockdowns and cautious re-openings. And by June when vape shops were beginning to open up again, Don had no one to make his e-liquid. He closed his lab with maybe $200 in his account.
“I would have joined the other folks who went out of business because the pandemic shut down all of my end users. My retail was going good, but vape shops in the UK were shut down for four months and then they opened up and then closed again.
“The buyers for the vape shops didn’t know what to do, they don’t
know if they should even be buying stuff, so it was quite the calamity.”
With America and the UK’s vaccination programmes well underway, things are starting to look up for the industry on both sides of the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Don has received an acceptance letter from the FDA allowing him to continue selling e-liquid at home.
But with travel corridors opening up, Don plans to make up for lost time, starting with the UK and then moving across Europe to attend shows as they happen and then into the Middle East via MEVS in Dubai. The goal is to be ‘everywhere’ in Europe by the end of the year, Southeast Asia by mid-2022 and then Australia and New Zealand after that.
“I want to be able to conquer these markets one at a time while we’re able to get out travelling.
“Countries are lifting the two-week quarantine restrictions and so we’re literally buying a one way ticket for the day after Labour Day. I sold my car, I’m selling everything in my apartment.
“My wife and I are going to become digital nomads.
“My aim is to walk on the top 10 beaches in the world during 2022 and attend all the international shows as they pop up, because there are going to be great shows in Barcelona, Germany, the Netherlands… I want to go to them all.”
Vapers across the globe recognise USA-based Innevape for countless reasons, whether it’s the brand’s community values, its renowned flagship Heisenberg* e-liquid, or co-founder Jeff Connell’s mind-blowing musical prowess.
After its conception in 2013, Innevape quickly shot to stardom, with the charming and down-to-earth attitude of its founders winning the hearts of fans the world over.
As a widely recognised, international brand, its products are now sold in over 30 countries, a far cry from its humble beginnings as a brickand-mortar store in Florida.
Aside from premium e-liquids, Innevape also contributes to the industry through its activism and advocacy.
With a wave of questionable vaping policies and potentially harmful regulations sweeping across the states, Innevape has leveraged its position as a leading brand to encourage vapers to fight for their rights.
Fortunately, despite the pitfalls of the pandemic, Innevape marches on as strong as ever, continuing on the endless journey towards bigger and better things.
In honour of its innovation and exceptional contributions to the vaping sector, Innevape became the first inductee into the Vapouround Hall of Fame in the 2020 Vapouround Awards.

ODB Wraps is an award-winning UK-based brand, wielding years of industry experience and an ever-present need for innovation to deliver unrivalled products to consumers.
Despite a tough 12 months for founder and CEO Chris Streeter, with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) in his wrist impacting his design work, the brand has had a ‘crazy’ year.
He said: “I’ve worked with massive names in the industry and branched out into South Africa to start my own company there, which has just expanded exponentially.
“But my shop’s taken a massive hit, so it’s ups and downs.”
As a devastating result of the pandemic, a lot of ODB’s neighbouring stores have faced closure. However, ODB has managed to stay afloat during these uncertain COVID times.
“I think we were quite lucky, I had just won an award for South England Vape Shop of the Year, so a lot of people have been coming in to check out the store.
“They like the whole family vibe. I’ve got Star Wars all over the walls, as well as pictures that my daughter made…people really jumped into that family feel.
“These are hard times for our industry right now, but we are a very big community and if everyone helps each other then we will get through this.”
“We’re taking a couple more steps towards becoming that big boy e-liquid maker that I dreamed about being a couple of years ago.”
A TASTE OF FREEDOM
What does a post-lockdown Britain mean for vapers?
Words: Gordon StriblingThe UK may finally be reopening for good after a year of intermittent lockdowns. As we begin to get back to normal, one slow step at a time, the vaping community hopes the past 12 months of shop closures are coming to an end. While there are no guarantees, as with all things COVID, we take a look at what vapers can look forward to if all goes to plan.
VAPE SHOPS REOPEN
The British government has come under fire from the industry for not classifying vape shops as essential businesses. Vape products may be more widely available in supermarkets and convenience stores than ever before, but only specialist shops can provide the expertise smokers need on their journey to a smoke-free life. Sadly, not all vape shops will have survived the past year, but many adapted to lockdown and will return stronger than ever. Now is your chance to repay the retailers and individuals who supported you through lockdown.
OUTDOOR SERVICE IN PUBS AND RESTAURANTS
I’m sure we aren’t the only ones who’ve been gasping for a ‘proper’ pint these long months. Well, now we can have one, outdoors and weather-permitting of course. There’s nothing quite like a pint and a vape in the open air, especially when catching up with friends and family after all this time. But it’s never been more important to practice considerate vaping.
Remember that people around you may still be feeling nervous – vaccine or not – so consider leaving the highpowered mods at home and keep it stealthy. You won’t impress anybody with large billowing clouds of vapour right now.
It’s likely that vapers will be relegated to smoking areas, especially in beer gardens and other outdoor public places.
This is a long-standing issue and people are unlikely to be any more tolerant of errant vapour than they were prepandemic.
DOMESTIC HOLIDAYS
Itching to get away to sunnier climes? Well, don’t reach for the sunblock just yet because international travel is still a no-no. But you can finally travel outside your local area for a much-needed getaway (if you can afford the inevitable mark-up that is).
It may have been that long since you went any more than a mile from your house that you could have forgotten about the importance of being vape-prepared when you travel.
Remember: Mod, e-liquid, charger/batteries and spares of everything! You’ll likely struggle to find that niche strawberry and lime crème brûlée juice in the wilds of Scotland.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
With any luck, we will see even more restrictions lifted from May, with pubs and restaurants allowed to open up indoor seating areas once again. As long as the infections rates remain low, we are promised the return of cinemas, nights at hotels and even international travel. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end and we can look forward to vape stores being allowed to remain open without restrictions.
It is vital that our industry is allowed to do what it does best…provide an alternative to cigarettes to as many adult smokers as possible. And while nights out at the pub and foreign holidays are great, the real prize will be won once the vape shops face no more arbitrary shutdowns.
DENMARK’S RASHER REGS
Did the government supress a report that could have saved the industry?
Words: Gordon StriblingOne of the things that makes vaping so attractive is the huge array of flavours. This is one of the few indisputable facts that both the pro and anti-vaping camps agree on.
It’s whether this abundance of e-liquid is attracting nonsmokers, particularly children, to nicotine that remains a source of contention the world over.
On April 1, Denmark became the latest EU nation to crack down on vaping by introducing a US-style ban on the manufacture of most flavoured e-liquids. Retailers have a year to clear their shelves of all but tobacco and menthol. The Danish government says that the initiative has been introduced to ‘reduce the number of smokers, particularly for fewer young people to start smoking or become addicted to other nicotine products.’
The new smoking regulations also:
Require plain packaging for all e-liquid and mods
• Require that vaping products are hidden from view in shops
• Prohibit products from being displayed on websites: only names, ingredient lists and prices are permitted
• Ban all discounts and promotions
Prohibit customer comments and recommendations on sales websites
The legislation was drafted after an alarming 2018 report showed that Denmark’s smoking rate had increased for the first time in 20 years. The European Tobacco Harm Reduction Association (ETHRA) and Danish consumer group DADAFO wrote to the health ministry in August 2020, stating: “The Bill will increase smoking by making safer nicotine products less accessible, more expensive, and less
appealing to adult smokers. “We urge you to consider the welfare and health of Denmark’s adult smokers and to listen to the experiences of consumers.”
But health minister Magnus Heunicke was unmoved. And in December, DADAFO declared the end of vaping in Denmark, posting a ‘here lies vaping’ tombstone on its website and social media accounts. The story may have ended there, were it not for a shocking revelation earlier this year.
In February, Danish media reported the health ministry received that year’s version of the smoking report in November 2019. The new report showed that the 2018 smoking increase had reversed and fewer people aged 15-29 were smoking daily.
The report was finished just as the parties were negotiating the new smoking regulations. But the health board had not told minister Heunicke of the findings, so negotiations continued on the understanding that young people’s smoking was up, not down.
Liselott Blixt of Dansk Folkeparti (Danish People’s Party) said: “We were not told that the figures now showed something completely different than what we had gone into the negotiations with.”
A majority in the Folketing (Danish parliament) accepted the action plan against children and young people’s smoking. Unaware of the new statistics, the new regulations were written into law. Lars Boje Mathiesen, health spokesperson of the Nye Borgerlige (New Right) party, said: “We have a long tradition in Denmark that we can rely on the information we receive from the agencies. But now it basically shakes whether the National Board of Health is really neutral.”

SPANNING THE SPECTRUM
Words : Gordon StriblingIt’s close to 18 months since Vapouround met Michael Lovedale at the Next Generation Delivery Conference. In the pre-pandemic world of endless expos and risk-free handshakes, the Exhale Technologies founder was playing his cards very close to his chest about a mysterious product he had developed. “It’s been a long journey. I had everything set up to go when I spoke to you and it was due to launch. And then the goings on in the US caused a bit of investor freak out and, as a result, everything was delayed quite considerably,” Michael said. “But we’re up and running. We are in some vape stores as of today, which is nice. It’s kicked off pretty well.” The product in question is WholeNic: a new range of ‘full spectrum nicotine’ e-liquids that Michael hopes could help millions of dual users switch for good and convert countless more vapers along the way. You may be familiar with full spectrum CBD e-liquids which contain other cannabinoids and terpenes, collectively creating what is known as the ‘entourage effect.’ The WholeNic concept is the same. “Vaping got rid of my nicotine cravings.
But I was getting really angry and really miserable. And when I got really stressed out, I’d have a fag. This seems to be pretty common. If you look at people who vape, nearly half of them still smoke. “Half of vapers are getting something from cigarettes that vaping isn’t doing for them.” Cigarette smoke is, of course, notoriously harmful, which is the main driver for millions of people switching to vaping. But combustible tobacco also has ingredients that make it pleasant to smoke and hard to quit. So, what Michael wanted to do was replicate the alkaloid profiles of the post popular tobacco products in a non-combustible e-liquid to create all the satisfaction but none of the harms of smoking. “We’ve got something that feels just like a cigarette. It has the same calming effects and, me personally, I feel other benefits too that I don’t get from vaping regular nicotine e-liquids. Vaping has had an incredible year, but the vape market is declining, and more and more people are starting smoking. And these people aren’t being addressed from a public health point of view. That’s an enormous
WholeNic aims to win over smokers and dual users with a potentially game-changing innovation
“We are upgrading that basic technology to make it more effective for smokers who have been completely missed.”
number of people being missed.” The last e-liquid innovation to get a long-lasting foothold was nicotine salts and WholeNic’s salt liquids feel like a natural fit for new vapers or dual users looking to switch for good.
Michael’s team opted not to use benzoic acid or salicylic acid in WholeNic’s salts, instead developing a proprietary formulation that ‘hits incredibly hard and fast’. “We’ve done that because of the 20 milligramme nicotine limit. We wanted something that would hit almost like a Juul as much as possible. And I really feel we have accomplished that. The salts also contain the exact same WholeNic formulation of full spectrum minor alkaloids in the same proportion as a cigarette.” The huge popularity and high smoking quit rate of vaping has made e-liquid a natural entry point for WholeNic. But Michael and the team
are also in talks with pouch manufacturers along with some other secret projects that they are not yet ready to reveal. Eventually, WholeNic could be used in a ‘full spectrum’ of reduced-risk nicotine products to help as many smokers quit as possible.
In the meantime, Michael is keen to get vaping back to its roots.
“E-cigarettes were invented to get smokers off smoking and offer something less harmful.
“The hobbyist market is great, but somewhere along the line, the market stopped catering for smokers. And as a result, we’re seeing shop sales and online sales falling.
“It’s not about being cool or offering the latest new flavour. The one constant has been nicotine. We’re just upgrading that basic technology to make it more effective for smokers who have been completely missed.”
VAPERS SPEAK OUT AGAINST BLOOMBERG’S ASIAN CRUSADE
Advocacy groups say blanket ban proposals are ‘ill-conceived and prejudicial’
Words: Gordon StriblingAmerican readers will be familiar with Michael Bloomberg’s anti-vaping crusade.
The billionaire has used his considerable influence and financial clout to lobby for flavour bans and he also funds a number of anti-vaping NGOs, including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK).
But Bloomberg’s reach stretches well beyond America’s shores.
In 2020, Bloomberg-funded International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) called for vaping to be banned in all low and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Now, after a political storm in the Philippines that saw The Union accused of meddling in international affairs, vapers are fighting back.
Nancy Loucas, executive co-ordinator of the Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA), said: “The recommendation by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease for a blanket ban on electronic nicotine delivery systems is ill-conceived, prejudicial to LMIC consumers and detrimental to public health.”
CAPHRA and the International Network of
Nicotine Consumer Organisations (INNCO) argue that banning vaping will hinder, not help, efforts to eliminate tobacco use in the region.
INNCO gave ten reasons why vaping products should not be banned outright and argued that bans were an ‘overly simplistic solution to a complex issue.’
Its president Samrat Chowdhery dismissed The Union’s claims that LMICs do not have the capacity to regulate themselves as “patronising” and added: “As the world is moving toward equality and parity, here comes a well-funded organisation that says, while it’s OK in the west, people in the developing nations should not have access to these products.”
INNCO believes that smokers should have the right to choose how they quit and that vaping could contribute to the aims of global tobacco control, as the World Health Organization acknowledges the role harm reduction can play in reducing tobacco use.
It said: “By removing reduced harm alternatives from the market — while leaving the significantly more dangerous cigarettes available—countries would remove this right from the individual.”
Earlier this year, The Union was accused of trying to influence the Philippines’ tobacco
control policy when it released funds to the country’s Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).
University of Ottawa Centre for Health Law and Policy advisory committee chair Professor David Sweanor said that the funding could take away the FDA’s impartiality when implementing guidelines on vaping and heated tobacco products.
Sweanor said: “It is essential that regulatory bodies have the trust of the public. Accepting foreign funding from sources with a vested interest in compromising the FDA’s independence can rapidly destroy that trust.
“In this case, the money ultimately comes from a US entity with an abstinenceonly agenda on low-risk alternatives to cigarettes.”
In March, the FDA admitted receiving donations from the anti-vaping NGO in order to hire employees to draft new regulations banning vape products in the country.
FDA director General Rolando Enrique Domingo admitted that the department had applied for funding from The Union but maintained that it remained objective and would listen to all stakeholders when drawing up vaping regulations.
“It is essential that regulatory bodies have the trust of the public.”
PROTECTING BRAND IDENTITY
After combatting a series of counterfeiting attempts with the help of Amazon, Komodo Vape turns its attention to developing new and exciting products.
Words: Jordan MillarFor Steve and the rest of the team, being the biggest and the loudest isn’t the driving force behind their success…being authentic is.
The 35-year-old father-of-two said: “I know a lot of companies will claim they’re family run just because they want to put that on their marketing material…but we’re genuinely family.
“We don’t want to the biggest company around…we are a mom-andpop store and proud of that fact.”
Recently, Steve noticed a group of opportunistic counterfeiters looking to siphon off his hard-earned success and clone his brands. But he was quick to take action, rallying a crack team of third-party trademark attorneys to help defend his intellectual property.
“Since launching the brand we've come across a number of different companies that have tried to counterfeit us, either by cloning the liquid, using similar designs or blatantly copying the products,” said Steve.
“They probably saw us as low hanging fruit, that we’re a small company and wouldn’t fight back, but we’re not afraid to protect our brand.”
As the founder of a family-run vape business in South Wales, Steve Hoskins knows a thing or two about innovating new products and serving the needs of a loyal customer base.
Komodo Vape operates out of a small unit in a Newport industrial estate, just 12 miles outside Cardiff. Boasting eight different lines, with a ninth on the way, it currently has more brands than it does employees.
Since its conception to now, Komodo Vape has become a staple of the industry, leveraging hard work, research and endless development to continue improving.
Even during his interview Steve was making himself busy, packing orders and preparing to ship them to consumers.
Not only is it home to Jungle Juice and the award-winning Cider Farms, but Komodo Vape also produces brands such as Celestial Vape, DRYP and Market Fruits.
Despite being forced to fork out five to six thousand pounds a month in fees, Steve insisted the damage caused by the counterfeiters “justified the cost of the legal route.”
He continued: “We spend an absolute fortune on the illustrations, with each privately commissioned design costing between three and four thousand pounds.
“To have that ripped off is devasting. Brands need to spend their own money on artists and be a bit more creative, not just jump on someone else’s ideas.
To combat the problem, Steve turned to Amazon Transparency, an app that allocates a unique verification code to legitimate products.
In essence, this prevents counterfeit products from making it to the delivery trucks, with a series of scanners picking out the real from the fake.
Even if some clones slip through the cracks and into the hands of
the end user, the app allows them to confirm the authenticity of their purchase, stifling the efforts of copycats and minimising the problem.
With the counterfeiters now far in the rear-view mirror, Komodo Vape continues to march forwards, recently launching its muchanticipated LOUT range.
Steve said: “The message I want to get across is that we found solution and have resolved the issue.
“We’ve always maintained that customers can approach me about problems like this. It doesn’t matter what my position is in the company, I will always be on the front lines.”
The message I want to get across is that we found a solution and have resolved the issue.

ON THE LEVEL
Tech company VAIPIO has developed LEVEL, a revolutionary onboard computer that can track your vaping habits and help smokers quit.
Words : Caroline BarryVaping technology is constantly evolving, with companies across the globe developing new and innovative ways to help smokers quit through the power of e-cigarettes. Dosage monitors, in particular, have recently gained traction in the research sector, and are now preparing to launch on the consumer market.
Not only will these devices allow people to track their nicotine consumption, but they could also give users a better understanding of when and why they pick up their vape.
Forward-thinking tech company VAIPIO is leading the charge when it comes to commercially available dosage monitors, having already developed LEVEL, a userfriendly smart device that learns your vaping habits and predicts when your next nicotine-craving will strike.
VAIPIO CEO, Yazan Sboul, explained that the device uses a basic traffic light system to help vapers stay in control of their nicotine consumption. He said: “It’s really intuitive and simple…
there is a green light when you reduce your dosage, which will turn blue when you’re at your normal level and red if you exceed it. All you need to do is avoid red, because that indicates that you are increasing your daily dose.” Yazan highlighted that you can puff at a green or blue level to your heart’s content, as this will eventually lead to a gradual drop in daily nicotine consumption.
The LEVEL system is also paired with a mobile app, allowing vapers to track their progress and measure multiple factors including number of puffs, time between uses and power per inhalation.
The app also gives you a more detailed breakdown of the information provided by the light system, showing you how your greens weigh up against your blues and reds.
“You can check your progress at any time of the day, but the idea is that we don’t tell people to stop vaping, just show them they’ve had enough,” said Yazan.
“It’s matching against your level, not telling you what you should or shouldn’t be doing…that’s why it’s called LEVEL.” He continued: “With normal cigarettes, you
never really know how much you’ve smoked, but with this you’ll know exactly how much.
“For example, if you go out partying and vaping all night, then the next morning when you wake up with a headache, you can tap it and see how you’ve done.”
The idea of dosage monitors isn’t exclusive to vaping companies, with the cannabis industry also developing smart devices to track user habits. Mark Wagner, co-founder of the world’s first smart cannabis device Mode, said: “I came from the e-cigarette space and I’ve used vapes to shift away from tobacco before quitting completely.
“We would love to offer this as an opportunity for people to be able to either quit or keep track of how much they are consuming through vapour…devices like this could definitely work with nicotine.”
Mark underlines dosage monitors as a crucial part of the industry moving forward, stressing that having an understanding of how much you’re consuming lets you establish your limits and know when you’re ‘overdoing it.’
He said: “With e-cigarettes, most people don’t know the volume of e-liquid they’re consuming…but if you want to quit you have to dial it back.
“We’ve seen a number of people say they’re excited about this technology, as they feel it will help them get back on track.”

While YouTube may be losing ground to TikTok, it’s still the original and best place to find vaping video content.
Words: Caroline BarryYouTube is the go-to place for videos showing vape tricks and reviews. It’s a great source of beginner to expert knowledge for all vapers.
Here we list some channels which are worth checking out…
@Vaportrailchannel
Tony began his YouTube channel after taking up vaping to quit smoking. A smoker since fifth grade, he switched to vaping and discovered YouTube when he started looking for more information.
The videos that he found were lower quality with lots of swearing so he decided to make his own. He feels his proudest moment is helping other smokers to quit. “What fills me with the most joy is hearing one of our community say, your channel is what helped me get off of the cigarettes, and you are accurate with your reviews, so they trust me. The fact that people hold me in high regard, or that I’ve been able to help them…that means the world to me.”
@Grimmgreen
One of the most respected vapers on YouTube, his channel has a strong 391k following. Nick is also a well-known advocate for vaping, most recently appearing in the documentary, ‘You Don’t Know Nicotine’ to discuss his journey in quitting smoking.
“When I started in 2009, there were few channels talking about vaping,” he said. “I quit almost right away and I wanted to tell other people about it. For a while, I was doing a show called THE 510 REPORT that was intended to be a short, weekly advocacy video. Danielle Jones and I did a two video series called “Vaping’s biggest enemy” and I’m probably most proud of that video.”
He adds. “My most popular video is a random review for the Vapour Giant mech. I did a simple build video in 2016,
that went crazy. People still watch it for building roundwire builds.”
@Vapingbogan
Australian channel, The Vaping Bogan offers comprehensive reviews of mods, e-liquids and beers. Sam Parsons pairs his favourite beers with e-liquids while offering his advice on new devices. Despite having over 170k subscribers, he never took starting a channel seriously. “I started the channel as a joke, I thought it would be funny to make a vape review being super ‘bogan and ocker.’ [Australian slang for uncultured.] “My proudest moment has been when I raised over $10,000 for an Australian vape advocacy campaign.
He added: “My most popular videos are nothing special, I just got lucky on the YouTube algorithm with those although hitting half a million views on my VGOD Elite mech review was cool. I take the most pride in my travel vlogs when I visit vape expos overseas. It will be nice when we can do that again.”
@Vapingwiththesis
Nas is not only a vaping connoisseur but a hip-hop artist too. He joined YouTube in 2013 before going on to build an audience of 30k subscribers. Minnesotabased Nas runs YouTube live chats where he is joined by his wife Mandy to talk about reviews, news and vaping. An average video on his channel can get up to 1.7k views. He has combined the reviews with lively content, giveaways and countdowns of his favourite vaping products.
He said: “The core reason I’ve done this as long as I have is to help people switch from cigarettes to vaping. A potential life-saving decision. The fact that it’s turned into a job is a huge bonus.”
@AmbitionZvapeR
Derek Keefe aka AmbitionZ VapeR started his channel to give others information on switching from cigarettes to vaping. His channel has an impressive 800 videos to do just that. He said: “I wanted to help others find more information and make
the switch. My proudest moment was finding out I was actually helping others to find their ideal products which helped them to switch. My most popular video was a crazy fun mod I made that got 2.4 million views. My favourite video was the Geekvape Aegis mod because I got to swim with it, smash it and try to break it. It was so fun making that video.”
@Pbusardo
Phil Busardo boasts an impressive 129k subscribers to this YouTube channel which he describes as ‘honest, raw and fun’ vaping reviews. His viewers clearly agree with him as his videos have had over 25 million views.
Phil started vaping in 2009 after looking for a way to quit smoking. Two years later, he started doing vape reviews on YouTube. The channel expanded into a solid social media following and vaping news website.
“My vape reviews started as emails to friends when I found good products I liked. Back then, there were very few vape shops that you couldn’t go in and hold the products in your hands. It was my goal to provide as much information as I could to allow the consumer to make an educated decision as to where they spent their money. I wanted to do that through opinion but also, my engineer background to show, describe and validate what the product was actually doing.”
The core reason I’ve done this as long as I have is to help people switch from cigarettes to vaping. The fact that it’s turned into a job is a huge bonus
JUMPING ON THE BANS-WAGON
Lawmakers across the US continue their war on vaping, with proposals for new bans, sales restrictions and many other barriers for smokers wishing to switch.
Words: Caroline Barryespite endless pleas from vapers and warnings from the scientific community, policymakers across the US continue to impose stringent and baseless flavour bans. Here are some of the states which are currently proposing new measures.
MARYLAND
Maryland officials are campaigning for two new bills that would heavily limit the sale and availability of vaping products. Not only would electronic ID be required to enter specialist stores, but online and remote sales would be completely banned under the proposed regulations.
Alex Clark, CEO of Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association (CASAA) said: “The bills in Maryland are just a few examples of legislation proposing to take low-risk alternatives away from adult consumers.
“Just like bills in several other states, if passed, Maryland residents would be limited to purchasing tobacco flavoured products only, regardless of whether they are combustible or not.”
He added: “In some cases, sales of vapour products in flavours other than tobacco will be restricted to adult-only establishments, like a vape shop with a policy in place prohibiting anyone under the age of 21 from entering. “Meanwhile, combustible cigarettes will still be allowed for sale in convenience stores and gas stations, relatively free from competition by safer alternatives on neighbouring shelves.”
VERMONT
Vermont is once again considering a wide-reaching ban on vaping and tobacco products.
The bills, which were proposed pre-pandemic but were soon halted by lockdown, would prohibit the sale of flavoured vape devices, e-liquids and combustible cigarettes. They would also eliminate the existing penalty for the possession of e-cigarettes and nicotine products, instead expanding current policies for the seizure and destruction of illegal tobacco products to include vape devices and e-liquids. A number of senators have already offered their support to the ban, falsely citing increased youth uptake as reason to pass the bill ‘as quickly as possible.’ Menthol cigarettes were originally exempt from the proposed legislation but have now
been included in the updated version.
FLORIDA
Policymakers in Florida are considering new vaping regulations after recommendations to outright ban flavoured products were vetoed last year. While the original bill gained the support of anti-vape groups, it was critised and ultimately curbed for being too restrictive.
The latest proposals aim to:
• Raise the minimum buying age to 21
• Prevent any vape retailers from setting up shop within 1,000-feet of a school Impose mandatory age checking for any online purchases
• Make active military personnel of any age exempt from the minimum buying age Vape shop owners across the state would also need to get a special selling license, however, they would not be required to pay the application fee.
KANSAS
First put forward in 2020 before losing the support of its sponsor, Kansas’ flavour ban
could gain traction once again at some point this year. If passed, it would ban the sale of all flavours, as well as raise the minimum purchasing age to 21 and prohibit the use of e-cigarettes in smoke-free areas. There’s also the chance of additional amendments being added to the bill in the event that it resurfaces. CASAA is encouraging Kansasbased vapers to reach out to lawmakers and urge them to oppose the ban, should it reappear.
NEW HAMPSHIRE
New Hampshire policymakers have already proposed a bill that blocks the sale of all vape flavours, excluding menthol and tobacco.
Projections suggest that a ban in New Hampshire could also impact vapers in Massachusetts, who place orders from across the border to avoid their own regulations and access reduced risk alternatives.
A prohibition on flavoured products could also impact state revenue, with local vapers ordering products online or travelling to other states to buy their e-liquids.
OUT OF HARM’S WAY
While smoking rates remain high among those with behavioural health issues, a new study examines how vaping could help reduce these numbers.
Words: Caroline BarryWhile smoking rates are generally on the decline, there are some communities where the figures remain stubbornly high.
In the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in four adults have some form of a behavioural health issue, and that they consume almost 40 percent of all cigarettes smoked.
The Tobacco Harm Reduction Research Project (THRRP), currently underway in San Francisco, examines how e-cigarettes along with patches, lozenges and snus could be used to reduce these numbers.
It allows participants to choose their quitting aid (including e-cigarettes and medications such as Champix or snus), combining this with education and counselling sessions.
Project leader Kevin McGirr, a clinical professor at the University of California’s School of Nursing, has vast experience treating patients with behavioural health or substance issues.
He said: “I wondered if we shouldn’t be applying harm reduction to those individuals given that they were not lining up in any significant way for smoking cessation programmes.
“Despite the fact that San Francisco has been a leader in harm reduction approaches, there has been a weird antagonism to e-cigarettes. “There was a lot of hysteria which evolved from young people using JUUL. As a result, the local board of supervisors legislated that electronic devices could not be sold or purchased in the city. While it’s illegal to buy or sell them, it’s okay to use them. This means you have to leave the city to purchase them.” The researchers used
NJOY e-cigarettes in the study because the company was an independent manufacturer with no links to big tobacco and its closed pod systems are both easy to use and difficult to tamper with.
Professor McGirr added: “We wanted to stay away from any products that might require more cognitive focus and manual dexterity when putting your device together. It also needed to be very difficult to manipulate the product to add crack or marijuana.”
Many participants in the study said they were happy to be able to get e-cigarettes to help them quit smoking and vaping is the most popular choice of quitting aid. However, many are wary of e-cigarettes because of the huge amount of negative media coverage about vaping in the USA.
The professor said: “While e-cigarettes are the most popular option, some people don’t want them because they have heard bad things or can’t get over the cough at the beginning, but they are in the minority. People, when they try it for the first time, are finding it satisfying.”
He believes that smoking rates are so high in the community because of a number of
important factors including stress and social issues. “This is a very stressed population both psychologically and socially where many people also have very unstructured lives with a lot of time to fill. Smoking gives them something to do or look forward to.”
He said many patients on anti-psychotic or anti depressant medications use nicotine to counteract the sedating effect of these treatments.
The biggest issue for the researchers is what to do once the
six month study ends as the San Francisco vape ban means participants will struggle to access supplies afterwards. Professor McGirr said he believed that the vaping industry should combine a balance of
medical and recreational factors. He said: “I think that vaping should be subsidised for people who have been long term smokers and clients who have public health issues.
“In the US, if people are on methadone then they get it for free. The government sees the wisdom in providing it for individuals as a strategy to reduce harm.”
“I think that vaping should be subsidised for people who have been long term smokers and clients who have public health issues.”
OBJECTION!
Words:Canadian vape shop owner William MacEachern wants his day in court. After watching Nova Scotia’s overbearing and damaging regulations drive a growing number of vapers back to cigarettes, MacEachern decided to take matters into his own hands.
The co-owner of Dartmouth-based Cloud Factory Vape Shop filed for an injunction against the province’s latest vaping restrictions, leading the legal campaign ‘not out of choice, but out of necessity.’
When the injunction was thrown out, without so much as a formal hearing, he decided to act.
He said: “I couldn’t just sit by and watch our industry slowly die off while people just seemed to accept it, so I had to grab the reins and take action.”
Nova Scotia recently became the first Canadian province to ban the sale of flavoured e-liquids, introducing a tax increase on all vaping products shortly thereafter.
However, critics argue that the regulations, which are set to combat Canada’s ‘youth vaping epidemic’, fail to consider the science.
A Yale study has revealed that the use of flavoured products doesn’t increase the likelihood of youth vaping uptake. It also highlighted that adults who use flavoured e-liquids “were more likely to subsequently quit” than those who don’t.
Consumer advocacy groups, alongside the local vaping community, were quick to support the injunction, pointing out that smokers could struggle to switch under the new restrictions.
The Canadian Vape Association (CVA) in particular has offered its full support, arguing that the regulations are a clear violation of the rights and liberties of vapers.
It said: “By viewing nicotine addiction as a choice, smokers are dehumanised and left behind by poor policy.
“Governments must acknowledge that in Canada all citizens are equal under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Vaping policy must respect the rights
heard you, we don’t need to hear it again.’ “What kind of democracy won’t even let you say your piece?”
But just as quickly as he was knocked down, MacEachern was back up again, and is now taking the issue directly to court so the arguments can be heard in public.
“We are going to trial…but it will take around nine-months…it’s disgusting that we have to wait so long,” he said.
MacEachern has called on the support of ‘as many wholesalers and distributors as would answer the phone’, urging them to put their money where their mouth is and help fund the legal battle.
He has even launched a GoFundMe page – Save Vaping in Nova Scotia –which has quickly gained traction and is closing in on its $130,000 target.
“There are big donations coming from these huge companies, but there’s also a lot of people reaching into their own pockets and contributing 50 or 100 bucks.
of all citizens as the lives of adult smokers quite literally depend on it.”
Despite tireless efforts, the campaign was brought to a grinding halt, with Justice Denise Boudreau denying the request for an injunction.
In response, MacEachern said: “We fought tooth and nail to stop these regulations, so it was a slap in the face to be shut down so quickly.
'Nothing we said was taken into consideration, never mind taken seriously…they told us: ‘We’ve already
“It’s not like with corporations who could just write it off, they are making a personal sacrifice which was amazing to see.”
MacEachern is also encouraging advocates to pick up their placards, dust of their megaphones and take to the streets in peaceful protest.
His last rally saw upwards of 100 Nova Scotians venture out into sub-zero temperatures to voice their concerns over the controversial regulations.
MacEachern and his supporters hope the litigation will enable adult smokers to use vaping as a stepping stone to complete nicotine independence.
By viewing nicotine addiction as a choice, smokers are dehumanised and left behind by poor policy.
At the end of his tether, a Canadian vape shop owner launches a legal campaign against Nova Scotia’s stringent regulations.

PREVIEW:
WORLD VAPE DAY IS ON MAY 30, 2021
Vapers encouraged to #GoTheExtraMile for World Vape Day as celebrations set to take place online for the second year running.
Words: Caroline BarryIt’s hard to believe it’s been an entire year since the last World Vape Day. Celebrations are taking place online again this year due to COVID-19 but there are still plenty of events planned.
The aim of World Vape Day (WVD) is to raise awareness of e-cigarettes as a harm reduction tool for smokers. It also provides information for anyone thinking about switching to vaping and campaigns on behalf of countries that are experiencing harsh bans or restrictions. It falls on May 30 which is the day before World No Tobacco Day.
The theme for 2021 is ‘Go The Extra Mile’ which will encourage vapers to go that little bit further to support and promote vaping. It will also be used as a hashtag to collect stories and showcase events on the day. Events will be streamed through the World Vape Day social
media sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
Throughout the month of May, organisers are planning a ‘World Vape Run’ as a prelude to the day which will give vapers the chance to be creative and show their fitness. At the end of the run, vapers can post and share their running time to social media under the #RunVaperRun and #WorldVapeDay.
Michael Landl, the director of the World Vapers’ Alliance (WVA) said: “On World Vape day we’re gathering vapers from around the world to celebrate this amazing innovation that changed our lives for the better.
“We’re doing it under the motto ‘Go The
Extra Mile’ because I can’t think of a single person who took up vaping who didn’t benefit from it, go further and improve their lives in the process.”
He added: “There will always be hurdles on the long path to defending and promoting vaping, but we should never forget that it is always worth going the extra mile for vaping — for us and public health in general.
“During World Vape Day, vapers will hear great success stories from our partners around the world and catch up with top figures in the vaping community.”
This year Vapouround Magazine is teaming up with the WVA as an official media partner for World Vape Day.
“During World Vape Day, vapers will hear great success stories from around the world and catch up with top figures in the vaping community.”
We will be covering the event in our magazine and online as well as raising awareness of the day on our social media platforms.
Vapouround Editor Patrick Griffin said: “We are delighted to be a part of this year’s World Vape Day, working alongside the WVA to spread the message that vaping can save lives on the biggest day of the vaping world.
“Now is the time for vapers to stand up and share their experiences, because without them, smoking could continue to put an unnecessary strain on public health.”
He continued: “With all the hostile media stories and misinformation surrounding the industry, it’s great to see the community come together and ‘go the extra mile’ to celebrate the devices that continue to change lives for the better.”
A program of talks, panel discussions and vaping shows will take place throughout the day with online events taking place in Europe, the USA, Canada and beyond.
The program put together by the World Vapers’ Alliance will be streamed on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and, at the time of writing, the lineup looked like this:
ANXIOUS TIMES FOR SMOKERS
Words : Caroline BarryData from two surveys has shown that people who live with mental health conditions are more likely to smoke than those who do not.
The data, which was recorded in 2019 and 2020, shows the effect of COVID-19 on the smoking rates of this particular group.
Some of the mental health conditions included in the surveys were recorded as low life satisfaction, unhappiness, poor self-worth and high anxiety.
Smoking prevalence in 2019 was recorded as 30 percent among those who identified as having low life-satisfaction and low self-worth. A quarter of current smokers reported low happiness, with 18 percent of those suffering from high anxiety.
In comparison, the smoking rates of those without a mental health condition was recorded at just 13 percent.

health and smoking rates. The numbers of those living with mental health conditions increased in 2020 as the UK went into lockdown. The numbers of smokers who recorded having high anxiety doubled.
Almost a quarter of smokers in England reported having higher levels of anxiety in 2019 before the pandemic which is estimated to be 1.6 million people. In the last year, 38 percent of smokers recorded high anxiety which increased to 2.4 million people.
A further 21 percent of smokers reported unhappiness and 17 percent said they had lower life satisfaction. There was no change in the smoking rates of those without mental health issues.
The reports also gave an insight into which areas of the UK have higher smoking rates among those who recorded low wellbeing. The North East, North West, East Midlands and East of England had the highest anxiety rates with 40 percent of smokers. When it
came to happiness, 20 percent of smokers across the majority of regions said they had low happiness. Both surveys were conducted by The Office for National Statistics (ONS) which surveys 320,000 households per year. The Annual Population (APS) and The Opinions and Lifestyle Survey (OPN) data is collected through a questionnaire or telephone call.
Similar findings have been reported by previous surveys. A report by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) from 2019 revealed that higher smoking rates remain the single largest cause of the estimated 10-to-20-year reduced life expectancy for people with mental health conditions.
Another from the Royal College of Physicians showed that those who smoke more than 15 cigarettes per day were more likely to develop a mental health issue. It is estimated that 40 percent of all cigarettes smoked in England are by people with a mental health condition.

STOP
THIS MADNESS!
Words: Jordan MillarThousands of Kiwi vapers have rallied against wide-reaching regulations proposed by New Zealand health officials.
If passed, the draft policies would apply more stringent restrictions on the display and advertisement of e-cigarettes, as well as the manufacturers and retailers of vaping products.
The most alarming of these new regulations are plans to restrict the sale of flavoured e-liquids to designated vaping shops, limiting other sellers to mint, menthol and tobacco.
The proposal has sparked outrage amongst advocacy groups, with critics stressing it could deter smokers from making the switch and potentially damage public health.
This rings especially true for people in rural areas with no access to specialist brick-and-mortar vape retailers.
Johnathan Devery, co-owner of VAPO and Alt New Zealand,
said: “Our collective goal is to convert smokers to harm-reduced alternatives.
“In order to achieve this, vaping products must be given an equal or more advantaged playing field.”
He continued: “We don’t support the flavour limits for general retailers, as flavours are key in getting adult smokers to successfully quit.”
Under the proposal, vape manufacturers would also be required to implement a 50mg/ml nicotine cap and display health warnings on the packaging of nicotine-containing products.
A recent consultation on the draft policies has received over 2,500 submissions, more than half of which came from general retailers.
This corresponds with another petition from the Aotearoa Vapers Community Advocacy (AVCA) group, which received over 17,300
Furious Kiwis demand that controversial proposals for tough new vape laws are scrapped.
signatures in support of access to flavoured vape products. Co-director of the AVCA, Nancy Loucas, said: “Petitions and submissions are great democratic tools, but the problem is that the Ministry of Health made up its mind months ago, despite insisting that, in this process, ‘every voice counts’.
Nancy highlighted that the ministry recommended a start date for the flavour restrictions prior to reading the public submissions, stressing that now is the time for ‘pro-public health politicians’ to intervene.
“The good news is it’s not over yet. In assessing the public submissions, the Ministry could recommend changes and, importantly, Cabinet gets to approve the final proposals,” said Nancy.
“Public health entities, including Hāpai Te Hauora and ASH, strongly support flavours, choices, and options for smokers desperate to quit cigarettes.
“These organisations and the 20,000 Kiwis who have signed or submitted in support of vaping, can’t all be wrong!”
Nancy is now urging officials to reconsider the proposed regulations, underlining that if they come into effect, smoking rates could spike and ambitions for a smoke-free nation would falter.
She said: “Democracy has spoken. It’s time for a re-think from our politicians. Thankfully that opportunity is coming to Cabinet within the next three months.”
Meanwhile New Zealand looks set to miss its Smokefree 2025 target, as the smoking rates continue to remain stubbornly high. While the numbers are declining, they would have to drop twice as fast as they are now for the goal to be achieved.
New Zealand has an estimated 535,000 adult smokers – around 13 percent of the population – and tobacco remains a key factor for health inequalities with 31 percent of Māori and 22 percent of Pasifika currently smoking.
These organisations and the 20,000 Kiwis who have signed or submitted in support of vaping can’t all be wrong!

MEET THE TEAM
When investing in a new e-liquid or device, our reviews are a must-see, so it is little wonder that this is one of the most popular sections of the magazine. Our reviewing team are all passionate vapers and amazing advocates for our industry. Here they tell Vapouround’s Caroline Barry what makes them tick.
ALEX SHENKER
Bournemouth
Alex turned to vaping in order to quit smoking eight years ago and now man ages BH Vape in Bournemouth. So what does the man who works in a vape shop with access to everything actually use?
“In the past year, I’ve been using the VooPoo Drag X which has been brilliant as it is a great little device.” When it comes to reviews, he is looking forward to trying absolutely everything. “E-liquid wise, I have never been able to find a favourite as I like a bit of everything.
I’m not fussy at all when it comes to it, which will come in handy with reviews.” Alex credits vaping with changing his life from improving his health to giving him a new career. “I have found a career in vaping which has been really great. I also think that when it comes to my health, it’s been a big bonus. I am diabetic so I was suffering as a smoker but I’ve been a lot better since I started vaping.
“I’ve met a lot of people and made friends through the vaping community too. It’s been really life changing for me.”
He is looking forward to giving his honest opinion and reviewing the latest innovative products which is something he sees a lot of in the store. So what changes has he seen in recent months? “There has been quite a lot of innovation in charging technology lately. We are getting in some new Geek Vape mods that have 2500 milliamp hour battery which is quite a large internal battery.
They charge up in just 15 minutes which is going to make things so much more convenient for people. Vaping has come a long way in the past few years.”
He adds: “I’m looking for things that are innovative but I will try anything that comes through. I’m absolutely down to try new technology or new e-liquids. If it’s the next big thing then I want to review it.”
PEACH ATKINSON
She feels vaping has made a big difference to not just her health but her social life too. “Vaping made a difference to my life in every way imaginable. It has made me feel physically better as I don’t get so out of breath and I’m not coughing as much.
Peach currently works in the industry and has been a vaper for years. She made the switch to vaping after she became interested in stopping smoking.
“I started smoking when I was about 18 years old and was a smoker for about five years until my doctor suggested that I switch to vaping instead. I have never looked back since then.”
“All of those things go hand in hand with quitting smoking. Vaping has opened up many doors for me even socially. I have met people through it including people all over the world. My mum is American so every time we go out there, I visit the vape shops and it’s opened up a lot of friendships for me, which is great.” As most vapers do, over the years, she started to amass a collection of devices. “The one I use most is the Lost Vape Orion Plus, it’s a little pod system. In terms of liquids then I have
been absolutely stuck on Innevape’s Carousel.”
Peach is looking forward to providing information for new vapers through her reviews. “I enjoy writing but then, another massive reason is that if someone picks up the magazine and reads a review, they may choose that device or e-liquid. If it helps just one person quit or cut down on cigarettes then to me, this is a nice feeling.”
She understands how complicated the vape world can be for new vapers looking to potentially quit. “It’s incredibly daunting. In my case, when I left that doctor’s appointment and went to a vape shop, I didn’t realise the masses of different devices, combinations and everything. It can be very overwhelming.”
PAUL JOHNSON
Derby
Paul is the owner of Derby vape store Del Boys and has a lot of experience to draw on when it comes to reviews. He said: “I started vaping to gain experience so I could get my advice right for customers. I’m proud that the store is still going strong after eight years.
“When we first started, we were really a smoking cessation sort of shop rather
than vaping store. Back then it was low power devices, disposables and stock from Chinese or Italian e-liquid companies. “There were not many UKbased e-liquid companies around at that time. Certainly no companies like Dinner Lady or Riot Squad. As the vaping industry grew, our shop grew with it.” He said his biggest challenge will be finding an e-liquid flavour that is new to him. “The problem is that everything has been done so it’s going to be interesting to get something completely new and unique. We’ve had coffee flavours and Mello Buddha had a green tea with honey e-liquid, so over the years I’ve tried a lot of different flavours. I’m struggling to find something I haven’t tried.” Paul also has experience with designing e-liquids and the science
behind it. “I went over to Capella in New Jersey and spent a week in their laboratories designing a range of flavour profiles for a brand. There is a lot of science that goes on behind the actual flavouring for something like a blueberry. I never understood how someone could like blueberry from one brand but not another but Capella told me they have 17 different blueberry variants which range from fresh, sour or sweet.”
“Probably my favourite e-liquid was Cafe Racer Croissant which was a tobacco flavour. They were very good flavours which I think are still going. I spent many hours driving from Vegas to California vaping that the whole way. It was a really nice e-liquid and probably my favourite of all time.”
MILLY DRODECKA
Milly started vaping four years ago after her smoker friends began making the switch. “I noticed a lot of people had started vaping and I found it fascinating so I wanted to give it a go. That’s how it started as flavours help you to quench the thirst for nicotine.”
She noticed vaping helped her friends to quit smoking and cut down on cigarettes. Milly started sharing information with her family in an effort to get them to quit smoking. However it wasn’t easy as the media misreporting about the dangers of vaping had already started in Poland.
“A lot of people in my family smoked so I wanted to show them this. It was hard to explain to them because all of a sudden, people were saying bad things about it. Even my father had started vaping but then just stopped.”
Milly knows what she likes when it comes to flavours. “I love fruit flavours at the moment. My favourites are Blue Burst and Purple Burst from Riot Squad but I’m not really keen on tobacco or dessert flavours. They are nice but not for vaping all day.”
She loves the sense of community that vaping has brought to her life.
“I find it interesting that vaping has brought people together into such a big community where we can support each other. I have met lots of great people through my vaping journey, by going to expos and on social media. I love to listen to people’s transition stories about how they quit smoking.”
Milly says she often feels like an ambassador for vaping as she offers a lot of advice for people confused about starting. “The other week, I helped a friend’s partner stop smoking. She had been using a low quality vape but wasn’t enjoying it. So I found her something better and now she loves vaping and says she isn’t going to smoke anymore.”

VAPORESSO SWAG PX80
When you buy a Vaporesso product, even before you have taken it out of the box, you are anticipating something great.
You automatically expect it to deliver the best performance, flavour excellence and the best build quality in the game of mass manufactured mods. And in the case of the Swag PX80, this device does not let you down.
Right out the box, I was impressed with the design of the device. It fits well in the hand, with a great leather grip built into the side that sits comfortably against your palm. The little touches like this really make Vaporesso stand out from the crowd.
One of my favorite features from the hardware giant’s latest offering is the stealth screen incorporated into the carbon fiber-like side of the mod. I was initially confused as to where the screen was and almost thought it didn’t have one at first.
It was only when I loaded a fresh 18650 battery that it revealed itself from its disguised location. I’m not going to lie, I was probably a little bit more excited with this than I should have been. But it’s the little things in life isn’t it! This is one of the best screen designs on any mod I’ve ever seen and I couldn’t help showing it off to everyone I saw. The LED screen is clear, well laid out and visible in all lighting situations that life throws at you.
The tank is, as most are these days, a magnetized design with great secure magnets that you aren’t afraid might come loose in your pocket or bag. The coils are easy to install, with Vaperesso’s locking and unlocking drip tip feature. At first I was skeptical of this but, I must say, it’s a great design and works really well. I enjoyed brilliant flavour from the stock coils which provided great vapor production.
I am the same as a lot of vapers these days and mainly use pod systems and AIO’s combined with higher strength nic salts. So it’s been quite refreshing to revert back to a sub-Ohm device with some lower nicotine freebase and chuck some moderate clouds and have a great flavour experience at the same time.
I don’t think you could really ask for more from a sub-Ohm device, it not only does the job but it does it flawlessly. From battery life to the power output, from flavour accurateness to the satisfying click of the fire and wattage buttons there is no complaint from me.
It really is a joy to use this device and I would recommend it to novice and experienced vapers alike. It has definitely proved itself to me and made it to the exclusive daily mod selection that sits proudly on my desk.
SMOK ACRO KIT
Words: Alex ShenkerIn the wide and varied world of pod systems, we vapers have a very difficult decision when it comes to picking our next device. I’m pleased to say that the Smok Acro Kit is here to help make that decision a bit easier.
There are so many features packed into this small, sleek beauty of a device. First and most importantly for me is the addition of variable wattage and a small screen, something so often missing on smaller pod systems. You also get two different firing methods, traditional button fire or an auto draw. USB Type C charging, adjustable airflow and the 1000mAh internal battery gives you plenty of vaping time throughout the day. The sheer amount of bang you get for your buck with the Smok Acro is incredible.
The Acro is primarily a MTL device, the pods feature a 0.8Ohm coil that is run at a suggested 12-15 Watts. I found 14 Watts to be the sweet spot for me. One slight downside is that the coils cannot be changed on these pods, this mainly comes down to personal preference and it does make sense in this case as it keeps the size of the pods and the overall device down to a minimum. That being said, the coils last a good amount of time so it really is only a minor grumble. The pods are super easy to fill, there’s a small rubber stopper on the side of the pod that gives you access to a small filling hole. I definitely recommend using 50/50 juices with these pods as I think it would be pretty difficult to get thicker juices in there due to the size of the pod and the fill port. The pods have a capacity of 2ml.
Airflow adjustment is handled by a small slider on the back of the device just underneath the pod. It gives you three options that for me range from an extremely tight MTL vape when completely closed off, to a restricted DTL when fully open. I personally liked it halfway open, for a tight but not completely restricted draw.
I am extremely impressed with the flavour I have been getting out of these tiny pods, having tried several juices, they handle everything from

fruits to desserts and menthols with no issues. Vapour production is what you would expect from a MTL device of this size, a decent amount but not for the cloud chasers out there.
The Acro is extremely user-friendly, I would be happy recommending this to brand new vapers due to its ease of use. Operation is as simple as five clicks of the button to turn the device on and off. Three clicks will switch between the button draw and auto draw modes. I personally prefer the button draw because that’s just what I’m used to after so many years of vaping, however the auto draw works well and I can see it being a popular feature. A quick click of the up and down buttons will lock the wattage on the device, and that’s everything. Nice and simple.
Build quality seems to be really impressive. Although the Acro is extremely lightweight it feels very sturdy thanks to its metal body.
The pod is attached via magnets and I’ve had no issues with the pod being loose or falling out at all. I’m also very pleased to say I’ve experienced no leaking at all with the Smok Acro. Always a massive bonus.
In summary I’ve really enjoyed my time with the Smok Acro. It’s a great size that’s super portable, packed full of features, brilliant flavours, long lasting battery and coils. It’s a device that I would happily use again and again.

JOYETECH EVIO C
Words: Alex ShenkerIf there’s one thing I’ve found when trying and reviewing vapes, it is that sometimes simplicity is key.
When you unbox the Joyetech EVIO C kit you’ll find the device itself, one pod, two coils and a USB Type C cable. And you’ll think to yourself, hmm simple! Let me tell you, in the case of the EVIO C kit, simple is absolutely best, everything with this vape just works.
The design of the EVIO C is fairly minimalistic, but it looks sleek and it’s very nice to hold, very smooth with rounded edges. There’s one button on the front of the device and that’s it! Five clicks turn the device on and another five turn it off again. Easy.
The push fit pods seem to hold very securely in the vape, no wobble at all, and the coils push into the bottom of the pod. Standard stuff for pod systems but very straight forward and it works.
The coils are 0.8Ohm and it’s impressive that Joyetech has managed to get a mesh coil into such a small, narrow enclosure.
One thing to note about the EVIO C is that there is no airflow control on the device, instead the pods have two airflow options, and depending on which way round you sit the pod into the battery you will get a different draw. The more closed of the two holes gives a very satisfying MTL draw, absolutely perfect; however if you want a little more air, just flip the pod around and the other airflow is a slightly less restrictive MTL draw. More airflow options would have been nice, but it certainly goes with the theme of simple that runs all the way through this device.
To fill the pods, you simply pull the pod out and find the bung on the side, the fill hole is amply sized and you shouldn’t have any issues filling the pod with most juice bottles on the market. My only grumble here is the dark colour of the pod can sometimes make it difficult to see how much juice is in there and I managed to overfill it a couple of times. I’d recommend holding the pod up to the light frequently to check how full it is when filling.
Operation of the Joyetech EVIO C couldn’t be easier. There are no
screens or other buttons here, just press and puff. The button has a small coloured LED behind it that will alert you to the remaining level of the battery. You don’t even have to use the button to vape in this case, due to the auto-draw function - the choice is yours. I personally prefer to use the fire button but both options work perfectly.
The battery is a modest 800mAh but I had no issues getting a whole day out of it and it charges up super quick thanks to the 2 Amp charging. I really wish more vapes made use of this feature as it’s really convenient.
Performance is where this device really shines. The flavour and quality of vape is outstanding. I threw as many different juices as I could through the pods and it just worked perfectly with everything. Due to this being a fairly low-powered MTL device it definitely works best with 50/50 e-liquids, however I did try some 70/30 and on the less restrictive airflow and it worked fine. The EVIO C is at its best for me on the tightest draw, with some 10mg salt nicotine. It’s an absolute joy to vape, outstanding flavour, MTL heaven.
In summary, the Joyetech EVIO C is the perfect MTL pod device for new and experienced vapers alike. It’s probably not going to win any awards for its looks but this is a victory for substance over style.
PROS CONS
- The perfect MTL draw
- 2 Amp charging
- Incredible flavour
- The colour of the pod can make it a little tricky to see juice level.

E-liquid capacity: 2ml Dimensions: 22 x 45mm Weight out the box: 42g Single coil build Top fill system 510 drip tip
Today I’m taking a look at Aspire’s latest addition to their tank range, the Neeko RTA.
The one I have is in black but it’s also available in stainless steel and gunmetal. So, what’s in the box?
• 2ml RTA with full glass tube
• Spare glass with 2/3 metal top
• Seal kit with deck screws & screwdriver
• Five replacement airflow jets
• Longer drip tip
In the hand, the Neeko feels very well made with screw threads and seals feeling smooth and tight. Unscrewing the base from the chimney reveals a postless design build deck with top coil mounting flat head screws, dual wicking points and the bottom air jet mounted in the centre.
I noticed tightening the screws after fitting a 0.4Ohm coil can knock the coil off centre, so it’s best to use a pair of tweezers to hold it in place.
Filling is done via the top, a quick ¼ turn and the top is off and the fill hole is revealed. To refit the top, align the locking point, push and twist. - this feels very smooth and secure. Now to give it a blast. A good direct draw, but far too easy for my liking, I prefer a more restrictive draw. Now ordinarily a quick twist of the airflow ring and we are good, but with the Neeko using air jets at the bottom and the top I will need to change them. This is not a problem as there is an array of different sized jets in the box ranging from 0.8 – 2.5mm. The 2mm is pre-installed, so the 1.5mm would be my choice. A quick twist and the top is off, the jet simply pulls out and the replacement fitted. Now for the bottom jet, this is sited underneath the coil in the centre of the build deck! Things are going to get messy. Having tried to change the jet with the coil still in place I decided it would be less hassle removing the coil completely. Once removed and
new jet fitted we are good to go. The 1.5mm jet is more to my liking and giving good flavour and dense vape. I would suggest trying the airflow jets before doing your build, it may not be exact but will give a good idea. After using the Neeko for a couple of days I had no leaks or issues.
After my success with the 0.4Ohm 1.5mm jet direct vape build I thought I would try the other jets as a MTL vape. A change to a 1.2Ohm coil and the 0.8mm jet was made and a nic salt juice was added. This resulted in a superb MTL vape, with excellent flavour and great throat hit. After experimenting further with the 1mm and 1.2mm jets I settled on the 0.8mm as my favourite MTL and the 1.5mm jet for direct vaping. There is also a 2.5mm set of jets which I didn’t try as the 2mm was too loose for me anyhow. Overall the Neeko is a good RTA, boasting an excellent build quality and a handy spares package. The only downside for me was the jetting system, as I vape different juices and change the airflow dependant on the e-liquid. But if you like a really loose draw on your vape then the 2mm or 2.5mm will be for you. As a MTL tank, once you have your preferred jets in place it’s a great piece of kit.
PROS CONS
- Overall build quality, spares package.
- Jet airflow system (if you like to adjust on the fly)

FIRST UNION PURLAVA
Upon first glance, the Purlava from First Union looks like a very basic, classic pod system, in this day and age possibly something not to get too excited about. However, when you look beneath its minimalist surface you find some interesting and surprising features.
The device is incredibly lightweight, but still manages to feel high quality with a clean, sleek metallic finish that really complements the simple shape design they have gone for with this device.
Down the sides you have two pinhole airflow outlets that, coupled with the shape of the pod’s mouthpiece, give you a really nice tight, yet smooth draw - perfect for that MTL fix.
The only advice I would have for the pod itself is that it could possibly do with some stronger magnets to keep it in place, as the ones on the device were slightly lacking.
The battery life on this pod system was another plus in my book, not only do you get rapid charge, but I found that a full charge would happily last me the majority of the day (even with heavy usage). For such a small battery, you can’t really ask for a better charging experience and battery life.
First Union have used their new generation ceramic technology with this device, a system which boasts ultra-high 1,200 degree temperature firing, 100 million evenly distributed microspores, 2.4 times e-liquid supply area and an e-liquid transfer speed increase of 17 percent.
The ceramic body uses natural food-grade ceramic raw materials, and the ceramic body and atomized aerosol have passed strict
safety certification.
While these statistics may sound impressive, the average consumer (myself included) doesn’t really care too much about the specifications listed on the back of the box; they just want to know what it vapes like and if the flavour is good.
While the overall vape experience with the coil and pod system is good, I feel the quality of the juice supplied with this device did not hit the mark. If it had come with pods containing really premium e-liquid I think the whole experience would have been great.
The strawberry flavour was my favourite but it just isn’t premium enough. Possibly providing refillable pods could be a good option for this device going forward, allowing the consumer to have a decent vape experience with a juice of their choice.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a straightforward, classiclydesigned pod system that will last you the day on a single charge then - with the right e liquid inside - this is a very good option.

ASPIRE RHEA
Since its inception, Aspire has continued to release consistently highquality devices. These range from simple pen types, all the way up to mods such as the 200W Rhea, of which I am reviewing today. The Rhea, a chunky and robust-looking mod, has an industrial feel to it. The colour is mainly matte black, with rubberised edges and faux suede leather accents on the sides and to the rear.
Bearing this in mind, Aspire has intended to create a shock-proof exterior to withstand even the clumsiest of folk. Batteries are inserted into the base of the mod, with a lockable hinged door that also indicates the correct orientation of the battery cells.
The front of this mod features a discreet, yet durable, fire button, a ‘-’ and ‘+’ button and a button labelled ‘M’ for Mode. The full-colour TFT screen measures 0.96” and I found that the clarity of numbers, letters and symbols were surprisingly crisp and easy to read – even without my glasses! The screen displays a collection of information including vaping stats, a puff counter and a dual battery indicator. Below the buttons and screen, there is a USB Type C port, designed to support super-fast 2A charging, although I always suggest charging batteries externally where possible.
The user interface is what you’d expect from Aspire. It allows vapers to adjust wattage and/or voltage. The Rhea also features temperature control vaping as well as a Bypass mode. I found that using the Bypass mode really enhanced the way I vaped and the hit was intense and fulfilling.
A few subtle touches, such as a choice of colour themes, brightness adjustments and a puff counter made this mod even more enjoyable to use.
The time it took from pressing the fire button to the coils heating up was instantaneous and I felt that the button itself was exceptionally responsive.
The Rhea has a 510 connection that supports most types of atomisers up to a 28mm diameter. The different mode capabilities are what made the Rhea stand out for me. Bypass vaping is my preferred
method and I would especially recommend it for RDA/RTA/RDTA users.
Sure it’s a little chunky, but this mod can also be an ideal choice for sub ohm users who covet a long-lasting battery life and a reliable high wattage performance. It can be easily paired up with many of the top tanks that are currently on the market. You can really push them to their limits, receiving the ultimate vaping experience.
Although I’ve never used it that high, the wattage range on this mod goes all the way up to 200W, placing it on the upper end of the spectrum when compared to other dual battery devices. When using a sub ohm tank, I stuck around the 60 Watt mark even though my coils were recommended up to 80 Watts. I still had great flavour and clouds, and the batteries lasted almost two whole days of consistent vaping.
Due to its easy to operate nature, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to vapers of all levels, even newcomers looking to venture into the world of sub ohm vaping.
The Rhea runs an innovative ASP chipset that not only supports a host of intelligent adjustment features, but also enlists several safety precautions such as short circuit protection, low voltage protection and overheat protection to name a few, ensuring a safe and hasslefree way to vape.
All in all, I was very impressed with the Aspire Rhea. It offered a careful blend of functionality and design that caters for a plethora of vapers. The assortment of modes makes for a tailored vaping experience, whatever your preference when it comes to power settings. This mod felt sturdy and robust to hold, though it felt solid enough to break a bone should you be so unlucky enough to drop it on your toe!

ASPIRE POCKEX KIT
When it comes to simple to use kits, there are few better options than the Aspire PockeX. It has gained notoriety, especially amongst new vapers, due to its hassle-free operation and its ability to offer both MTL (Mouth to Lung) and RDL (Restricted Direct Lung) styles of vaping. The exterior is sleek and unassuming and comes in a variety of metallic colours. It lacks a display screen and in terms of buttons, this device has just one – the fire button. I feel that this greatly adds to the straightforward nature of the PockeX and bypasses the daunting feeling that new vapers may experience when it comes to devices that have several modes or have adjustable features. This device’s compact stature and rounded, cylindrical shape means that it is a perfect fit for even the smallest of pockets. In spite of its small size, the PockeX has a hefty, substantial feel that just oozes quality. I really admire that Aspire has kept it simple and have avoided over-complication. The PockeX features a built-in, rechargeable 1500mAh battery. Some vapers may think that it seems a tad on the small side, but it has lasted me about a day of moderate usage. This kit allows for pass through vaping, so you can vape it whilst it is on charge. The PockeX is easily connected to a power source via Micro USB and takes roughly 60-90 minutes to fully charge. Battery level is indicated by LED lights on the fire button and you can tell when it’s running low by the colour of the light – flashing orange means it is time to plug it in to a suitable USB charger and a steady green means it is fully charged. One of the most defining aspects of the PockeX is it’s ability to offer vapers a chance to enjoy both MTL and RDL vaping. One of the key factors behind this is the choice of coils in the kit. There are two variations, a 0.6Ohm and a 1.2Ohm, both of which fit snugly into the unscrewable top cap. Using the 0.6Ohm coil and a high VG e-liquid, I have enjoyed full on flavour and surprisingly decent vapour production. Comparatively, the 1.2Ohm coil worked fantastic alongside 20mg nicotine salts and still retained a good level of flavour. Coil longevity is impressive and I have heard reports of them lasting
well over a month - obviously depending on usage. Filling the Aspire PockeX is possibly the easiest method I have come across in my six years of vaping. It simply involves unscrewing the top part of the device and filling liquid halfway up the glass (there is a miniscule line indicating the maximum fill level). There are no rubber gaskets, tiny fill holes or having to clumsily disassemble the device in order to fill it up – another great feature for new vapers especially. This device does not feature an adjustable airflow control, and therefore it can be a little restrictive if you are planning to vape direct to lung. However I found that it is at a level that is rather ambiguous and can accommodate both an MTL or RDL inhale.
It is very clear to see that Aspire had simplicity and ease of use in mind when designing the PockeX. Not only is it straightforward to operate, but battery life is adequate and cost wise it is difficult to beat. It truly is an all-rounder and I found that it can be a great option for all, even seasoned vapers who want an inexpensive, easy to use and discreet device for on the go.
PROS CONS
- A very versatile device for all levels of vapers
- Good coil longevity
- Inexpensive
- I’d like to see some sort of adjustable airflow option

Right out of the box, I was obsessed with this disposable. The minimalist, ergonomic look is great for all-day discreet vaping, and the sleek body fit perfectly in my hand.
If there’s one thing I love about this device, it’s the Frunk-y design, with the eye-catching box and the popping colours drawing me in. Not to mention the 90’s-esque aesthetic, which threw me back to my youth and reminded me of summers filled with good music and company.
This is one of the longer-lasting disposables I have tried, with its 2ml tank being capable of providing up to 600 puffs. There is also a 4.5ml version available with as many as 1,200 puffs, but you do have to sacrifice a little bit of the subtlety for size.
The drip tip was very comfortable, and the draw was flawless, if you pair that with the smooth throat hit then you’ve got the ultimate disposable vaping experience.
All in all, this is a great out and about device, with the 400mAh battery typically outlasting the tank – a must in any disposable vape.
This device should be a staple in any vaper’s arsenal of products, whether you’re a newcomer to e-cigarettes, or a veteran user.
The Frunk Bar comes in five delicious flavours, including Iced Mango, Berry Mixer, Strawberry Nana, Frozen Grape and Banana Breeze.
Iced Mango
This flavour is the ultimate blend of mango and ice, with the succulent fruity base being complemented by a frosty kick.
Every draw of this juice threw me back to days on the beach, lounging in the sun and sipping something stronger.
Any hardcore mango-lover will not be disappointed with this, a refreshing flavour if ever there was one.
Berry Mixer
This juice is a dark fruits delight, blending the flavour notes from a number of different berries to create a standout, showstopping flavour.
I am a particular fan of the raspberry and blueberry undertones, which combine into one of the most lip-smacking flavour profiles I’ve ever tasted.
Strawberry Nana
This juice had my mouth watering before I’d even opened the box, with a mist of creamy, banana aroma tickling my tastebuds and drawing me in.
The subtle banana balanced perfectly with the plump, ripe strawberries, creating a flavour that I could truly vape all day long.
Frozen Grape
This has always been a hard flavour to get right, and can often be very hit and miss, but Frunk Bar Frozen Grape definitely delivered. That classic grape soda taste paired with an icy blast work together brilliantly, and I will be sure to pick up a few more of these for my weekends in the sun.
Banana Freeze
All I can say is wow, this flavour is like someone created the best banana split and condensed it down into a vape.
Super icy and chock-full of banana goodness, this juice is a lovely, refreshing dessert-based liquid that will certainly have you coming back for more.
The Beco Bar ULTD XL is a simple to use, convenient disposable, perfect for both novice and veteran vapers alike.
Boasting a 400mAh built-in battery, this device is designed for stamina, with the battery outlasting the juice by a long way.
The device itself is cased in a hard plastic packaging module, which can be opened up to reveal a visually impressive disposable.
Not only was this nice to hold, with the ergonomic body allowing it to sit effortlessly in my palm, but it is also very discreet and inconspicuous.
For me, this is one of the best mouth-to-lung disposables available on the market, with the tight draw and silky throat hit making for the ideal vaping experience.
With a 2ml tank and as many as 550 puffs per device, the Beco Bar ULTD XL packs a big punch, satisfying my nicotine cravings and keeping me smiling the whole day through.
What’s perhaps most impressive about this disposable is the wide range of premium flavours on offer, meaning there is something for everyone, no matter their palate.
Alongside the device itself, I am reviewing six mouth-watering flavours, including Getsome Grape, Raspberry Twist, Pomberry Plunge, Apple Blow, Slushberry and Menthol Blast.
Getsome Grape
There’s nothing better than the delicious taste of an all-American grape soda, and this flavour has managed to capture the fruity bubbly delight perfectly.
The fizzy soda notes mix perfectly with the bittersweet grape to create the ultimate homage to that popular US classic.
Raspberry Twist
This rich, punchy flavour blends the taste of tarty raspberry and notes of tea to create an all-round brilliant e-liquid.
The inhale on this was particularly pleasant, leaving me feeling refreshed and thoroughly satisfied.
The perfect fruity treat for anyone with an insatiable sweet tooth.

Pomberry Plunge
This Pomberry Plunge Beco Bar calls on the immense flavour of strawberries, mangosteen and melon, for an unparalleled explosion of fruity goodness.
The succulent taste and smooth throat hit pair together brilliantly, making this an all day vape like no other.
Apple Blow
Apple is never an easy one to get right, with liquids often becoming dull and mundane, or unbearably sour.
However, the Apple Blow Beco Bar hits the nail on the head, drawing on sweet and refreshing flavour notes to produce a candy-like exhale. It is up there with some of the best apple flavourings I’ve ever tried.
Slushberry
This juice was the ultimate throw back, reminding me of my childhood, drinking slush puppies in the park with friends on a red-hot summer afternoon. I kept coming back to this sweet blueberry flavour time and time again, with the tangy notes keeping my nicotine cravings at bay.
Menthol Blast
This juice is perfect for those times when you are looking for something simple and refreshing to vape.
The icy, menthol inhale from this e-liquid felt like I was breathing in an arctic cold front, rejuvenating my senses and energising my palate. New vapers, in particular, may find this a really enjoyable alternative to cigarettes. A winner in my book.
DINNER LADY – DISPOSABLE VAPE PEN
Dinner Lady has always been the epitome of quality and innovation, a fact that isn’t lost on their newly released disposable vape pen. Flaunting a host of premium materials and an expansive roster of mouth-watering e-liquid flavours, there’s no doubt that it’s one of the best disposables currently on the market.
After copious amounts of research and development, the Dinner Lady team improved both the battery and the coil, optimising the pen for the ultimate vaping experience. It now has a 350mAh grade A Li-ion battery and a 1.6Ohm atomiser, alongside a proprietary cotton blend wick for flawless flavour delivery.
The device also boasts revolutionary fibreglass fireproofing and a stainless-steel body capable of withstanding upwards of 9kg of pressure with ease. Unfortunately, for me, the biggest flaw in the product itself was in the otherwise wonderfully designed packaging. As somebody who struggles with identifying colours, I found it hard to differentiate between a few of the boxes and subsequent devices.
The Banana Ice, Lemon Tart, Lemon Sherbets Ice and Citrus Ice are all very similar colours, which made it near impossible for me to tell the difference between them.
More so, the sleek and modern look of the pens didn’t allow for any labelling, so I could have very easily reached for a taste of citrus, only to be surprised with a hit of banana. However, this is an easy fix and didn’t greatly impact my experience with these devices.
Available in 13 flavours, each one combined with a 20mg salt nicotine base and offering users up to 400 puffs, this disposable is the perfect choice no matter what your palate.
Lemon Tart
There’s no denying that Dinner Lady’s award-winning masterpiece,
PROS

- Discreet body

Lemon Tart, is one of the best flavours available.
The sweet lemon meringue and butter biscuit crust blend together perfectly in zesty harmony, with the last taste being just as flavourful as the first.
Banana Ice
I’m not normally one for banana flavoured e-liquids, it’s a challenging blend to get right and most brands struggle to do so.
The same can’t be said for this flavour, which felt more like sipping a refreshing banana milkshake on a hot summer’s day than taking a vape on a Monday morning in the office.
All in all, a subtle and satisfying banana cream combination.
Mango Ice
A mango-lover’s dream, this cool flavour is a fruit blend bursting with rich, tarty notes and is ideal for those days in the sun.
Each exhale of this juice is accompanied by a wave of icy, sugary goodness, quenching your thirst for something sweeter.
Fruit Mix
This is perfectly balanced, with notes of grape, berry and citrus all coming together to create a barrage of exciting flavours. There is a danger with complex profiles that some elements can get lost in the mix…but not here. This is just sublime.
Strawberry Macaroon
A phenomenal dessert flavour that, for me, comes in close second to the acclaimed Lemon Tart liquid.
Dinner Lady’s Strawberry Macaroon is a sweet and moreish mix, with the ripe flavour of strawberries acting as the foundations on which the juice can thrive.
Bubble-gum Ice
This juice is 100 percent, unadulterated bubble-gum, just the way I like it.
Every inhale of this flavour cast me back to my youth, raiding the sweetshop and walking home with pockets – and cheeks – full to the brim with bubble-gum candy.
This will definitely be a flavour that I will come back to time and time again.

Words: Peach AtkinsonWhen it comes to squonk mods, practicality and portability are a given. They offer vapers a chance to retain the flavour and the clouds of an RDA, with the added benefit of not having to re-drip every five to 10 puffs.
They come in many forms, and the one I am reviewing today is a fully mechanical, single 18650 variation.
Mechanical mods require knowledge about building coils and battery safety, so make sure you look into this if you are new to them.
The Vandy Vape that we all know and love has paired up with El Mono Vapeador to create this stunningly stylish squonker, designed with advanced vapers in mind.
A tiny, pocket-sized kit, the Requiem looks and feels the part. With straight edges, a matte black exterior and gold accents, this kit sets out to impress.
Build quality is on point. Everything is crafted to precision: both the doors and the interior components all fit snug with no loose connections or rattling.
The fire button is very responsive and has a satisfyingly ‘clicky’ sound when using it. To avoid accidental firing, there is a locking mechanism inside the device that can swivel and therefore block the connection needed to initiate vaping.
The weight of this kit, even before inserting the battery, is impressive. Its shape is rather boxy and features sharp edges that give the Requiem a robust feel and strong sense of careful quality.
The Requiem takes a single 18650 battery. Due to the fact that this kit is a mechanical mod, there is no display showing battery life/wattage/ voltage etc. I found that a freshly charged battery lasted me about a day of regular vaping when using a single 0.28Ohm coil.
This kit includes the super-simple Requiem RDA and comes with two different top caps, one black and the other a transparent amber colour. It also contains a choice of beauty rings that add to the stylish nature of this device, again in similar colours to the top caps.
come loose throughout the day.
In terms of size, the RDA is rather petite and requires just a single coil to get it going.
I found the deck incredibly easy to build on and wicking was equally straightforward. I felt that the 510 drip tips offered a slightly tighter draw when compared to typical RDAs that require 810 drip tipstherefore increasing the flavour production whilst also creating a warm inhale. The flavour on this RDA was second to none. It seemed to really accentuate dessert flavours, and also managed to convey sour flavours incredibly well too. This RDA works best with high VG e-liquid, as thinner eliquid can make it prone to leaking.
When pressing the squonk bottle, the liquid is evenly distributed over the cotton and the coil, and only requires a light push to fill it to a satisfactory level. This kit includes a choice of two different coloured squonk bottles, both made with high grade silicone. One of the most interesting features of the squonk bottles themselves would be the three methods of refilling them. Anyone who has used squonkers before will most likely have encountered difficulty when trying to top them up. However the bottles in this kit can be filled in a few ways. Firstly, by removing the top, squeezing down the middle, then replacing the top. Secondly, you can insert the nib of an e-liquid dropper straight in to the tube that feeds into the bottle itself. The third way (and my favourite way) simply involves opening a rubber gasket near to the top of the silicone bottle and filling via the hole –super simple and no mess.
Overall, this kit was very well presented and had a completely ‘next level’ build quality with an unbelievable hold. I really was in awe of the elegant, yet simple, look of this device.
The RDA was a doddle to build on. Flavour was perfectly presented and the narrow airflow and 510 drip tip further exaggerated the warm inhale – something that is a definite plus for me.
All in all, a great option for mech users, and certainly one of the best squonkers I have been lucky enough to try. - Exquisite build quality
This RDA comes with a bottom feed squonk pin already installed, ready to go but you can also fit a regular 510 pin if you are planning on using this RDA on a standard device. The Requiem RDA sits well on the mod and the top cap was rather difficult to open, meaning it won’t
-
- The RDA is so easy to build on
- I loved the choice of refilling options
JUICE N POWER
Strike
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
The taste of sweet melon dominates this juice, being the first thing to hit you before a wave of sweet berries sweeps in and livens things up. The two flavours blend together perfectly on the inhale, creating a mouth-watering harmony between sweet and subtle. While I’m not the biggest melon lover, this truly had my taste buds singing, especially on the exhale. Every time I took a hit of this juice, a mist of fruity pleasure swept across the office and turned my colleagues green with envy.
Honey Dew and Berry Kiwi Mint
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
I was cautiously optimistic when I first saw this e-liquid, as I love all the flavours individually, but wasn’t sure how they could be successfully mixed together. The second I opened the bottle all my doubts melted away and were quickly replaced with a sweet, tempting aroma, gently urging me to take this juice for a spin. The bold melon acted as a catalyst, allowing the ripe berry and tangy kiwi to blend with the fresh mint. I couldn’t help but be reminded of a tropical mojito when I was vaping this cheeky little number.
Cola Passion Fruit Guava
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
Cola has always been a temperamental flavour, with most brands struggling to hit the nail on the head and master the blend. But the same can’t be said for Juice N Power, who have captured everything I love about that fizzy cola taste and bottled it up with a refreshing passion fruit chaser. This is truly a well-balanced, delightfully moreish e-liquid, with sweet guava being thrown into the mix to tip it over the edge and create an instant favourite. I’ll be sure to grab a few bottles of this for those COVID-safe trips to the beer garden.
Red Apple Slices
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
Sometimes it’s good to go back to basics, strip away all the complicated flavour combinations and enjoy something more on the simpler side. This e-liquid gently mixes the classic sweet and sour of red apple, offering a subtle candy-like edge on every exhale. If you looked up ‘refreshing’ in the dictionary, there should be a picture of this Juice N Power masterpiece underneath, as it immediately quenched my cravings and left me feeling satisfied. You’d be lucky to pick this up if you ever go bobbing for a new apple e-liquid.
Surge
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
The description on the bottle says, ‘Mango Medley’, but it should say ‘Mango Explosion’. Before I’d even taken my first taste, I could smell a gorgeous blend of plump mangoes and sweet peaches, brewing together in a perfect nectar which was just waiting to be vaped. Juice N Power truly outdid itself with this liquid, with every hit feeling like I was biting down on a piece of fruit picked straight from the tree. All in all, a welcome change from the typical, run-of-the-mill flavours.
ZEUS JUICE (BOLT RANGE)
Banana Custard
VG/PG ratio: 70/30
Well here’s a juice that takes me way back to my childhood. Is there anything better than bananas and custard? Not for me! Zeus has done a great job here, recreating a brilliant dessert. The custard tastes sweet and creamy, with a silky-smooth hit from the ripe banana flavour melding perfectly with the vanilla notes in the custard. I just can’t help but smile when I’m vaping this e-liquid. It’s so rare to find a banana-based juice that actually tastes like real banana, and the fact that it’s mixed with custard is a real treat. Zeus has knocked it out of the park with this one.
Bubbly Blackcurrant
VG/PG ratio: 70/30
I’m an absolute fruit fiend when it comes to e-liquids, so I was really looking forward to trying this one, and it doesn’t disappoint. I’m not the biggest fan of blackcurrant on its own, but for this juice Zeus has created a really tasty blend of orange zest and fizzy lemon that complement the strong berry flavour. This is a classic sweet and sour combo with the subtle citrus notes taking the edge off of the syrupy sweet blackcurrant. The sharp and fizzy lemonade dances on your tastebuds rounding out a masterfully blended fruit cocktail that’s seriously addictive. I could really see Bubbly Blackcurrant becoming a mainstay in my juice collection.
Cherry Cola
VG/PG ratio: 70/30
Zeus brings us another classic flavour combination with Cherry Cola, one of my favourite drinks to have as a treat. I’m also a bit of a cola connoisseur so my expectations were high. Thankfully Zeus has once again delivered, it’s a delicious classic cola flavour that’s steering the ship, helped along by a sweet, dark cherry that’s the perfect accompaniment. The fizziness featured in this juice makes it feel like you really are drinking a refreshing glass of cherry cola on a warm summer’s day. It’s seriously sweet but doesn’t become at all overpowering thanks to how utterly refreshing it is. I really couldn’t put this juice down once I started, so my only issue is that I vaped it too quickly.
Strawberry Shortcake
VG/PG ratio: 70/30
Okay, those of you like me with a sweet tooth listen up because you really need to try this juice. Strawberry Shortcake is a delightful dessert blend. The initial and most powerful element is the fresh, ripe strawberry flavour which is light and sweet and the perfect vessel for what’s to come. The strawberry is quickly flanked by a light freshly baked cake flavour and thick heavy cream. Wow! The three aspects all merge into a delicious strawberry shortcake that’s bound to put a smile on your face and it all just tastes so fresh and authentic. My only issue was that I felt like I needed to eat a ton of cake and strawberries afterwards.
White Chocolate Mocha
VG/PG ratio: 70/30
I, like so many others on this planet, am mostly comprised of coffee, and I’ll get it wherever I can, including in my vape. I’ve tried so many different coffee e-liquids over the years and I think they can be a bit hit or miss, so I commend Zeus for creating a really tasty juice here. Upon my first inhale my mouth was filled with a rich, creamy coffee. The flavour is spot on and really does taste like a smooth mocha made with high quality beans. It was quickly joined by a subtle, yet familiar, hint of white chocolate which is such a warm and comforting flavour. I’m really impressed because I find white chocolate to be a difficult flavour to portray in the vape world and Zeus has used it with masterful subtlety that really complements the coffee flavour without taking away from it. If only it had caffeine in it as well!
Mango Lychee Menthol
VG/PG ratio: 70/30
With Summer right around the corner, I find myself craving a nice fruity juice. There’s just something about sitting in the garden with some drinks and a vape. Zeus has absolutely got my back here with Mango Lychee Menthol. I love mango e-liquids and that’s the dominant flavour here. It is sweet and exotic tasting, the perfect base for the tropical taste of lychee. I know it’s a bit of a divisive flavour, but I particularly enjoy lychee and it works nicely with the mango to whisk your tastebuds to a tropical paradise. As lovely as this juice is on its own, the menthol elevates it to a new level, giving it an ultrarefreshing edge where each chilled exhale left me feeling like I’m sat on an island somewhere sipping an ice-cold fruit cocktail. This could well be my juice of the summer!
A3 – CHERRY COLA
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
I’ve always been a fan of cherry cola, not just as an e-liquid, but in sweets, drinks and even air fresheners. So when I cracked open a bottle of this juice and was hit with that familiar aroma, my mouth started watering immediately. It’s fair to say this didn’t disappoint, with the smooth notes of vintage cola hitting you on the inhale, and the deep, ripe cherry giving you a wonderful aftertaste. Japonism Cherry Cola has definitely found a place in my regular roster of e-liquids.
A4 – GINGER TEA
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
This juice is simple yet effective, packing a serious herbal punch, strong notes of ginger and an all-round relaxing aroma. The subtle spicy flavour of this e-liquid is perfect for those stressful days, when you just want to sooth your senses and clear your mind. This is a great way to enjoy some vaping self-care on the go and avoid those over complicated flavours. A definite mainstay juice for any herbal fan.
B1 – RICH MILK & AZUKI ICE CREAM
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
I was cautious about this juice at first, with the combination of unique flavours providing a series of taste sensations I’d never experienced before. Although a slow starter for me, this liquid soon found its way into my heart, the creamy vanilla notes and savoury undertone coming together to create an extremely smooth throat hit. Japonism Rich Milk and Azuki Ice Cream is certainly an acquired taste, not for everyone, but definitely worth a go.
B2 - LEMON GINGER
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
A refreshing, zesty lemon and ginger blend, this juice is the perfect choice for those evenings in the beer garden. The tangy citrus flavour hits you on the inhale and is quickly followed by a wave of fiery ginger on the exhale.
This juice has a very subtle sweetness, making it the ideal all day vape for those who prefer a little bit of sugar with their spice.
B4 – ICE MANGO
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
Sometimes simplicity is key, especially when it comes to e-liquids. Too often can brands get caught up combining every flavour under the sun into one perfect blend, so it’s nice to be able to vape something that doesn’t bombard my tastebuds. There are strong notes of plump mango on the inhale and a refreshing icy blast on the exhale, making for a smooth and satisfying draw. The perfect juice for lazy days lounging in the sun.
B3 – GREEN TEA AND HONEY
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
The green tea in this juice can be described in one word…beautiful. As I was vaping it I could almost pick up a tropical flavour, most likely because the honey was mixed in with it so well. I’m not usually one for honey in my e-liquids, but these two elements blended together so flawlessly, it really had my tastebuds tingling and my palate begging for more. I will definitely be coming back to this juice very soon.
JUICE SAUZ – SALT
Glacier
VG/PG Ratio: 50/50
Vaping Juice Sauz’s Glacier liquid was like sitting on the edge of a cool artic cliff, with a refreshingly chilly ice-blast tantalising and energising my tastebuds.
This super cold, extra minty juice is great for when you want to give yourself a refresher and awaken your senses. I usually turn to this liquid on those long Mondays in the office, giving myself a frosty post-lunch wake-up call. It also makes a great palate cleanser, allowing you a break between all the other flavours you might be vaping and taking things back to basics.
Vanilla Lemonade
VG/PG Ratio: 50/50
Vanilla Lemonade is a classic cream soda concoction that reminds me of summer days, lounging out under the sun with the sound of the sea in the background. This subtle little fizzy treat is a must in any vaper’s collection of e-liquids, with the tarty vanilla balancing perfectly with the bubbly lemonade. This is the perfect juice for soft drink lovers who need to satisfy their cravings and keep that sweet tooth happy.
Blue Raspberry
VG/PG Ratio: 50/50
No roster of flavours would be complete without blue raspberry, it’s almost like having a Sunday roast without that all-important gravy. Despite being a quintessential juice, this particular blend has set itself apart from the competition, offering a slight fizz and wave after wave of ripe raspberry delight. Blue Raspberry is, without a doubt, a banger on all levels, with the cool throat hit and subtle notes making it lovely to vape.
Gold Rush
VG/PG Ratio: 50/50
Tobacco e-liquids are great for newly recruited vapers looking to move away from cigarettes, with the rich, earthy tones making for a perfect alternative to traditional smoking.
This aromatic, smoky blend was surprisingly smooth, almost sweet, providing a light draw and flawless exhale every time.
Whether you’re a purist or a novice vaper, it’s always good to have a few bottles of this on hand.
Cherry Cola
VG/PG Ratio: 50/50
Cherry cola is one of those flavours that so many brands struggle to get right. Too much cherry and you lose that necessary fizz, but too much cola and it can fall flat. But this e-liquid sits perfectly on that fine line, reminding me of an upmarket, classic cherry cola. The depth of flavour on offer made me feel as though I was sipping straight from the bottle, and the tantalising smell had my mouth watering. This is truly a standout liquid for me, and I will definitely be getting my hands on a few more bottles.
Mango Passion
VG/PG Ratio: 50/50
For this particular batch of reviews I must say that Mango Passion was a particular favourite of mine. Juicy is an understatement, as every inhale brought with it notes of sweetness, topped off with a refreshing tart edge. This cheeky little liquid cast me back to warmer summer days, out in the garden with good music and better drinks. The flavour strikes a great balance and is one I’ll be coming back to when the sun decides to make an appearance.
King Kong Vape Juice
KIKONGA Ratio VG/PG: 70/30
Words: Paul JohnsonFirst off, I don’t read the flavour profile on the label. I think if an e-liquid is any good I should be able to tell what the flavour is, or at least have a good idea without reading the label. I go to my ever faithful Cleito Pro, new coil fitted and filled with KIKONGA. First draw gives a warm rich lime meringue flavour,
then a creamy biscuit comes through leaving a refreshing citrus taste in the mouth. This is one of those flavours I could vape all day long.
A switch to my dripper and even more flavour is released, again thick, creamy lime and biscuit, even the aroma smells good, this really is a nice juice. After now reading the label, Key Lime Pie is the flavour profile and it doesn’t disappoint.
Having used all my review bottle I would say it’s a comfortable all day vape, not too sweet, but rich and refreshing. One to try if you like your dessert flavours, you won’t be disappointed. Available in 50ml shortfill.
Liquid Nation
HEIZENDEATH
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
Liquid Nation has put its own twist on a traditional and well-loved e-liquid flavour by infusing it with a barrage of bursting berry flavour.
The cool aniseed on the inhale is quickly followed by a myriad of subtle, juicy mixed berry goodness, maximising the menthol hit and leaving you with a great aftertaste.
Heizendeath would be the perfect choice for any vaper, whether new or seasoned, with the easy-tovape juice which gives a new take on an old classic.
Ultimate E-liquid – Heroes
CAPTAIN COSMIC
VG/PG Ratio: 70/30
There’s nothing better than opening a seemingly normal mango e-liquid and being hit with wave after wave of irresistible fruity goodness…that was my experience with this e-liquid.
Before I’d so much as tasted it, I could already smell that it was much more than a basic, lacklustre juice.
This tropical banger vaped like a dream, smooth flavours and a ripe, refreshing undertone. Not to mention the notes of pineapple and guava present throughout. I guess they called this Captain Cosmic because of the astronomical flavour.
