LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Next month will see the start of Spring, a time of rebirth and renewal, but it will also mark a full year of coronavirus-related restrictions and lockdowns. If you look at the mainstream media, coronavirus seems to be the only story in town, but it is not the greatest threat out there when it comes to our industry.

As we highlight in this issue, we continue to be plagued by flavour bans, overzealous restrictions and ever-increasing taxes. These are all factors that could decimate our industry. Politicians, particularly in the US, have fallen into the same patterns of coming up with laws – almost always to protect public health – while ignoring the simple fact that they can have the opposite effect.

What do politicians think will happen when vapers no longer have access to e-cigarettes?

Does it ever actually occur to them that very many will be forced to return to smoking? So, by all means, regulate the vaping industry proportionately and sensibly but don’t enact measures which lead to more people dying. That is madness. Thankfully there are determined and committed advocacy groups the world over who continue to fight for a more common-sense approach. It is always great to see the work they continue to do and I am pleased to feature stories about some of these organisations in this issue. I am ever the optimist and sincerely hope that this is the year that normality begins to return to the world.

While it is still very sad that brick-and-mortar stores remain closed in the UK (and around the world), it is great that business owners are doing everything they can to support their customers, for example by investing more in online services and providing help and advice via the internet.

Finally, we are all looking forward to our third edition of the award-winning Vape Live and CBD Live virtual expos, hosted by VOXPO. These will take place between April 28-30 from 10am to 6pm Central European time – so see you there!

SHORTFILLS

Three pages filled with short vape-related stories and research making news from around the world.

WORDS OF WARNING

Changing the health warnings on e-liquids could lead to a third more smokers switching to vaping, according to new research. Professor Janet Hoek from New Zealand’s University of Otago, said statements like, ‘If you are a smoker, vaping reduces harms to your health’ and ‘If you are a smoker, vaping reduces your risk of lung disease’ were particularly effective. She said: “If policy-makers want to encourage the uptake of electronic nicotine delivery systems among smokers, yet deter it among others, a targeted messaging strategy could be more effective.

COULD EMOTIONS HELP SMOKERS QUIT?

Understanding the complex emotions of smokers and vapers may hold the key in creating more effective programs to help people quit. Statistical scientist Professor Runze Li said he was looking for the elusive unknown factor which determines smoking dependence. Li, from Pennsylvania State University, said: “The goal of my research is to understand how emotions are associated with, or can cause, smoking relapse. “The challenge of designing smoking cessation programs is not determining if emotions play a role, but in determining just which emotions spark smoking dependency.”

BANNED IN MILAN

In an effort to improve Milan’s air quality, lawmakers have banned smoking in parks, stadiums and other outdoor public places. The new rules will force smokers to be at least 10 metres away from other people when using cigarettes, however, vapers are exempt from the restrictions.

The law is the first of its kind in the country, with Mayor Guiseppe Sala planning to ban smoking in all open-

air spaces by 2025. Those who break the new restrictions face up to €240 (£214) in fines.

BAT’S CBD LAUNCH

British American Tobacco has piloted a new CBD vaping device the VUSE CBD Zone, ahead of a possible national roll out later this year. The device is initially being sold in convenience stores in Manchester and is part of the company’s goal of launching products “beyond nicotine.” BAT UK & Ireland general manager Fredrik Svensson, said: “CBD vaping is a new category for us, and we will be using this pilot launch to gain key learnings about consumer and retailer experiences.” VUSE CBD Zone comes in 50mg and 100mg strengths in mint, mango, and berry flavours.

EQUAL RIGHTS PLEDGE

The Canadian Vape Association says it will challenge any regulation that prevents vapers from accessing harm reduction products. It wants national and local governments to accept that the liberties of vapers and nonsmokers are equal, stressing that “vaping policy must respect the rights of all citizens as the lives of adult smokers quite literally depend on it.” The move comes as it was revealed that flavour bans and nicotine strength restrictions could breach the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

YES WE CANN

The Cannabis Council of Canada (C3) has partnered with a selection of leading cannabis companies in a collaborative effort to introduce a nationwide vape recycling scheme. The program is set to hit over 200 retailers across British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario and will help consumers dispose of their hardware in a safe, conscious way. C3 President George Smitherman said: “This initiative signals an important step in developing shared solutions so that the industry can meet stewardship responsibilities on a collective basis.”

A MILLION TIMES NO

Plans to ban flavoured e-liquid in California have been put on hold following a submission for a referendum signed by more than a million signatories. The law, approved last year by the California Legislature, is now suspended until late 2022 when voters will decide whether to repeal the ban. The petition to hold a referendum was submitted by the California Coalition for Fairness.See feature “A sad state of affairs - US flavour ban round up.”

SMOORE GOOD NEWS

When a long-established client of heating technology vape brand FEELM asked a seemingly simple question, it set off a complex chain of events both in China and overseas. Flavour experts and scientists were part of a 700-strong team perfecting the optimal flavours that FEELM’s trademark ceramic coils could bring out in its closed pod devices. CEO Frank Han said that one question had driven the company’s ethos to get the taste of its products exactly right. And the question? “Could FEELM ceramic coils bring back the taste of California strawberry at 6am with flavoured e-liquid?”

FEELM’s parent company Smoore has become the first in the Chinese atomisation industry to be granted a prestigious AEO Advanced Certificate. The accreditation is highly exclusive, with just 0.22 percent of registered Chinese enterprises holding certification. Among other benefits, it will allow 30 percent faster customs clearance times on international shipping, thereby hugely reducing the logistics costs. The certificate acts as a “VIP Pass” for international distributors and the Chinese government has already established mutual AEO agreements with over 40 countries, with a further 20 in development.

HOLD THE TAXES

Policymakers in Montana have passed a bill to stop local governments from regulating e-cigarettes without state approval. The legislation – to prevent vaping products from being taxed and restricted as cigarettes – is now awaiting approval from state officials. Despite a promised opposition from tobacco control groups, supporters expect the policy to be approved.

V – AI – PERS

Scientists are developing the “Level” system, an onboard AI device that precisely monitors the vaping habits of users. It will incorporate data found during a study into the psychology and behaviours of dual users. Lead researcher Dr Emma Ward, from the University of East Anglia, highlighted that the study could give smokers and vapers a greater insight into their nicotine cravings.

She said: “The new technology we’re using is more reliable and sophisticated than the puff counters which come integrated in many e-cigarettes… it records the puff topography to build a personalized profile of the user’s vaping patterns.”

A Foundation for a Smoke-Free World employee was fired for raising concerns about its ties to Big Tobacco and practices including the promotion of teen vaping, a lawsuit alleges.

Former director of digital and social media, Lourdes Liz, claims she was sidelined and eventually fired. The Foundation is yet to file a formal response but said that it ‘intends to deny the material allegations and defend against it vigorously.’

The foundation has the financial backing of Philip Morris International but maintains that it is independent and committed to ‘ending the world’s billion smokers’ addiction to cigarettes.’

MAY 12-14 FOR TPE21

Following “an exceptional year of uncertainty due to COVID-19” this year’s Tobacco, Vapor, and Alternative Industries trade show (TPE21) is moving to May 12-14, 2021.

The Tobacco Plus Expo will still be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, on the same show floor with the same exhibitors.

Ben Stimpson, Managing Director of Tobacco Media Group, said: “The warmer weather of May gives us more options to safely execute the business and networking aspects of the show. We feel confident that this new timing has everyone’s best interests in mind.”

A fast food fan has created a Big Mac-flavoured e-liquid to help see him through lockdown. Dave Sykes spent months crafting the McDonald’s-inspired juice after struggling to get hold of his favourite takeaway. Sykes said: “I’d been thinking of quitting smoking and the start of lockdown felt like the right time. That was fine but what wasn’t OK was that I could no longer get a McDonald’s. But after perfecting my secret recipe this is the next best thing.” The software developer is considering KFC as his next meaty vape endeavour.

WILL VAPING BE AN INNOCENT CASUALTY IN THE WAR AGAINST CANCER?

The European Commission has launched its landmark ‘Beating Cancer Plan’, despite an overwhelming backlash from vapers and consumer advocacy groups.

Lawmakers want to increase taxes for ‘novel tobacco products,’ including e-cigarettes, as well as impose a broad-reaching flavour ban.

The proposed measures have infuriated vapers throughout the EU, with advocates saying they could “undermine the public health potential of vaping.”

John Dunne, director general of the UKVIA, said: “We are seriously concerned by reports that the European Commission is considering such regressive action.

“While we completely support efforts to combat the scourge of cancer in our society, the creation of artificial barriers to harm-reduction products is clearly counterproductive.

“Adult smokers must be empowered to make positive change, rather than being discouraged.”

Dunne points to evidence from Cancer Research UK confirming the harm reduction of vaping when compared to combustible cigarettes. It also highlights the efficacy of e-cigarettes as a cessation tool.

New regulations posed by the European Commission’s ‘Beating Cancer Plan’ have spurred outrage amongst EU vapers.

“It is vital that the UK now take advantage of the legislative and regulatory independence afforded by Brexit, to safeguard this country’s proportionate, evidence-based approach to vaping.”

While supporters of the controversial plan claim it’s an ambitious step towards beating cancer, tobacco harm reduction groups have dubbed it a failure to smokers.

Commenting on the launch, Director of the World Vapers’ Alliance (WVA) Michael Landl, said: “This plan shows that the European Commission is allowing ideology to get in the way of science.

“Smoking and vaping are not the same and the Commission knows this. However, they are neglecting their duty to pursue policies in the best interests of all EU citizens.”

Landl stressed that, by treating the risks of smoking and vaping as equal, policymakers were preventing thousands of people from switching to a safer alternative.

The European Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (ETHRA) – who represent millions of vapers across Europe – have written to MEPs

to express their anger and frustration at the proposed changes.

ETHRA said: “The Plan fails to recognise the interaction between smoking and vaping and is naïve about the perverse consequence of the regulatory interventions proposed.

“As ex-smokers, we are painfully aware how difficult it can be to quit smoking, and many of us could only quit using safer nicotine products after other methods had failed us. “If these Cancer Plan proposals were already in force, there is no doubt that many of us would still be smoking today.” They continued: “We are losing confidence in the European Commission as an objective and evidence-based institution.

“It appears to be adopting simplistic and emotive talking-points rather than putting the health and welfare of Europeans first.”

The commission presented its ‘Beating Cancer’ plan to the European Parliament on February 4 –World Cancer Day – in an exchange of opinions, wherein EU officials offered their own views and suggestions on the proposal.

UP IN SMOKE

Stress and uncertainty caused by the global coronavirus pandemic has stopped smokers around the world giving up, in a trend which has worried health chiefs.

For the last decade cigarette sales have dropped as more and more smokers switch the deadly habit for reduced risk alternatives such as vaping.

However, 2020 saw the end of the ten-year downward trend as cigarette sales remained flat instead of falling.

The data from tobacco giant Altria Group suggested that smokers lit up more during the lockdown and vapers or dual users returned to smoking.

The stress caused by the lockdown, with many people losing their jobs or facing an uncertain future, is one of the factors behind the figures.

Also, the failure of the UK government to exempt vape shops from the lockdown, as regularly highlighted by the UKVIA, made it harder for vapers to stock up.

The upturn in smoking is particularly worrying as doctors warn that COVID patients who also smoke are at a greater risk of becoming seriously ill if they contract the virus.

Altria said the fact that people had more free time at home, drank more alcohol and had more available cash because most recreation and entertainment venues were closed, were all behind the trend

reversal. It added that due to the ongoing uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, they were not in a position to predict what the industry’s 2021 sales may be.

A spokeswoman for the US Food and Drug Administration said pandemic stress was also to blame.

She told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that stress caused by a whole range of factors including job losses and the mental toll of lockdowns was also a likely explanation as to why fewer smokers quit last year.

“COVID-19 has created a drastic change in daily life, including increased stress and anxiety, that may contribute to a smaller-thanexpected reduction in cigarette sales,” she said.

One US smoker told the WSJ that he was lighting up more while working at home during the pandemic. He said: “I can’t take 10 breaks a day at the office but at home I can have a cigarette whenever I want.”

The findings have also alarmed health officials, with the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) stressing that current and former cigarette smokers have an increased risk of ‘severe illness’ from COVID-19.

Professor of Molecular Medicine Ian Hall said: “The most likely explanation for smoking being a risk factor for COVID-19, is that

Patrick Griffin and Jordan Millar
NEWS

people who smoke are more likely to develop chronic lung and cardiovascular diseases.

Vaping organisations hope the smoking sales figures are a one-off anomaly and that cigarette sales will once again decline this year.

World Vapers’ Alliance Director Michael Landl said that lawmakers also had an important role to play in helping smokers quit.

He said: “Vaping is less harmful than smoking and can help smokers to quit and former smokers to stay away from the deadly habit.

“That is why new regulations should be led by science and real-life experience, instead of ideology.

“Lawmakers around the globe must actively encourage smokers to switch to e-cigarettes and ensure accessibility and affordability, otherwise the goal of improving public health can’t be achieved.

“Now 2021 must become the year of vaping instead of smoking.”

Meanwhile in America, some states are putting smokers in the priority groups to receive the COVID-19 vaccine because of the potential extra risks they face.

Smokers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Mississippi and Alabama can all receive priority COVID vaccines as they are regarded to be in ‘highrisk’ medical groups.

Google urged to resist calls to remove all vape-related apps from its Play Store

Potentially lifesaving vape apps could disappear overnight from Google, if anti-vaping groups get their way.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is spearheading a call for Google to shut down dozens of vape-themed apps that it opposes. In an open letter, a number of signatories from 62 countries, all opposed to vaping and smoking, say: “We urge Google to immediately remove and adopt a policy to prohibit applications that encourage the purchase or consumption of smoking and vaping products in the Google Play Store.

“Time is truly of the essence to protect the next generation from the global tobacco epidemic and we urge you to act immediately.”

However, 35 pro-vaping groups have penned their own letter urging Google to keep the apps online, arguing that they are vital to help former smokers stay off cigarettes.

The organisations, which represent millions of vapers worldwide, say many of the apps in question allow smokers to access the information they need online to ensure that they have the best chance of quitting cigarettes for good.

Apple and Amazon are among other companies who have implemented similar bans, with around 200 vape-related apps disappearing from the Apple Store in November 2019.

The letter said that many of the apps that the Tobacco-Free Kids group wanted to be banned were specifically designed to “help and guide those who wish to find a less risky alternative to smoking.” It also called upon Google to “follow the science” when deciding how to act.

Francisco Ordonez, President of Latin American consumer group, ARDT Iberoamérica and signatory of the letter, said:

“Vaping is less harmful than smoking and an effective smoking cessation method. People need to be able to access accurate information about vaping and get help to quit smoking.

“Reducing access to reliable information for smokers will mean that fewer people try to switch to less harmful alternatives. Nobody can want this. Google needs to resist these misinformed and populist demands.”

The signatories point out that many of the apps that the anti-vapers want banned were designed by enthusiastic ex-smokers and small to medium-sized businesses specifically “to help and guide those who wish to find a less risky alternative to smoking.”

Michael Landl, Director of the World Vapers’ Alliance, one of the 35 organisations behind the call, said: “Google already showed its ability to protect kids from accessing content not suitable for minors.

“It is clear that they have the technical ability to protect children without depriving adults of information. For the good of public health and consumer freedom this anti-vaping crusade needs to stop. The health and wellbeing of millions of people around the world depends on it.”

It also highlighted that vaping was 95 percent less harmful than smoking, stressing that many governmental agencies already encouraged smokers to switch.

The letter went on: “Vaping saves lives and has been a lifeline for more than 68 million people around the world who have struggled to quit smoking. For them and millions of others who are considering quitting smoking, access to information is crucial.

“We do not represent industries; we are only concerned about access to a life-saving alternative to smoking for adult consumers.

“Policies promoting vaping have arguably achieved more in a short period of time than what lawmakers tried to accomplish for years: fewer people smoking cigarettes.

“Therefore, we urge you to continue your fight against smoking, but also to recognise the advantages of vaping and to not follow unscientific demands urging to ban apps that provide information and support regarding vaping on your platforms.”

RLX Tech valued at $35 billion after successful New York Stock Exchange launch sees share price double in value

Chinese e-cigarette company RLX Technology saw its share price leap by 145 percent on its first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange. It sold its shares at $12 each in the US IPO – higher than the target price range of $810 – as demand for the start-up was high. On its first full day of trading, it opened at $22.34 – 86 percent higher than the initial IPO price – reflecting many analysts views that vape industry is in a strong position with the potential for huge growth.

At the closing bell the share price had leapt to $29 per share to give it a market capitalisation of more than $35 billion.

RLX Technology is the company behind the hugely popular RELX brand which invests heavily in state-of-the-art technology to produce devices and flavours that adult vapers enjoy.

The Beijing-based vape company has become China’s largest e-cigarette maker after being founded in 2018 and has marketed its devices both in China and worldwide.

It had earlier planned to make the IPO on the Hong Kong exchange but opted to switch to the US after deciding it was a better fit. The move follows the July 2020 Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing of Shenzhen-based Smoore International, whose brands include Vaporesso, FEELM and CCELL.

Smoore became the first e-cigarette company to be listed on the Hong Kong exchange and these listings show that there is considerable confidence in the vape sector as more and more smokers around the world quit cigarettes.

According to data compiled by Bloomberg US Exchanges, just under $15 billion was raised by Chinese IPOs on American

exchanges last year, making it the second highest amount on record.

According to its prospectus, RLX has a 62.6 percent share of the Chinese market for closed pod devices in terms of retail sales. It works with 110 authorized distributors to supply its products to over 5,000 RELX branded partner stores, and over 100,000 other retail outlets nationwide, covering over 250 cities domestically.

RLX made $400 million in sales for the 12 months ended September 30, 2020 and almost doubled its revenue in the first nine months of 2020 to $324 million, with net income of $16 million.

DON’T LET LOCKDOWN SQUANDER HARM-REDUCTION GAINS

UKVIA urges policymakers to maintain click-and-collect services at specialist Scottish vape stores.

onsumer advocacy group UKVIA has called for Scotland to maintain click-and-collect services at vape shops following the announcement of the latest national lockdown.

The call comes after Scottish smoking rates rose for the first time in seven years, with more than a quarter of smokers reporting an increased habit since the first lockdown in March.

The spike came after lawmakers closed specialist vaping retailers across the UK, deeming them ‘non-essential’ businesses.

UKVIA director general John Dunne said: “All the nations of the UK must reconsider how they support the vaping industry and the public during lockdown.

“Squandering the potential of modern, harm-reduction tools is a disaster for public health.”

Dunne has since written to policymakers, urging them to protect click-and-collect services amidst the latest stretch of the pandemic. However, this isn’t the first time the group has asked the UK government to reconsider its position on vaping.

After the first lockdown, Dunne highlighted the critical role specialist stores play in reducing smoking uptake but was met with a limited response by MPs.

He said: “This could be dangerous from a public health perspective and could heighten the risk of exposure of tobacco smoke to bystanders during the crisis.

“This could also place a further burden on an already overstretched health system.”

Despite goals outlined by the Scottish government, Cancer Research UK has stressed Scotland is on track to miss its smoke-free target by 16 years.

In response, vaping retailers are taking action, pleading with local government to allow brick-and-mortar stores to continue supporting adult smokers.

“Years of hard work in reducing smoking rates in Scotland are on the verge of being wasted if we fail to act by not providing the tools people need to stop this deadly habit,” said Doug Mutter, manufacturing and compliance director at VPZ.

“Specialist vaping stores have done a fantastic job in adapting safely to trying times, so the suspension of click-and-collect is a huge blow.

“We must be allowed to properly support those seeking advice and guidance on harm-reduction alternatives.”

Congress has passed a shipping bill that could mean the end for small vaping retailers across the country

Furious e-cigarette advocates, retailers and customers have reacted with anger at America’s controversial new “vape mail ban” for its devastating impact on the industry.

The bill was introduced to prevent young people from buying vaping products online, but advocates worry it will have a damaging effect on smaller retailers.

It prevents sellers from shipping goods through the US Postal Service (USPS), forcing all nicotine and cannabis vaping deliveries to come to halt.

Additionally, retailers must comply with the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act (PACT), which outlines stringent rules for the delivery of vaping products through private shipping companies.

American Vaping Association President, George Conley said: “If the increase in shipping costs wasn’t enough, the bill also imposes huge paperwork burdens on small retailers and backs it up with threats of imprisonment.

“This is not a law designed to regulate the mail-order sale of vaping products to adults; it’s an attempt to eliminate it.”

Among the many requirements imposed by the bill, online retailers must now verify the age of customers through a

commercial database, as well as provide a detailed monthly report of transactions for all the states they ship to. With the US Postal Service now off-limits, online retailers will be forced to turn to private couriers to deliver their products. However, companies such as FedEx and UPS have already announced plans to stop shipping vaping goods early this year.

Consumer advocacy group CASAA pointed out that many independent postal companies typically outsource deliveries to the USPS – especially in areas they deem ‘dangerous.’

It said that many consumers living in those areas typically also didn’t have access to brick-and-mortar stores and therefore would not be able to purchase vaping products at all.

A CASAA spokesperson said: “The supporters of this bill argue that preventing the shipment of vapor products will prevent teens from getting their hands on them and reduce youth usage.

“Meanwhile, cigarettes will remain the most visible and widely accessible tobacco product in the history of the world.”

Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé accused of “endangering public health” to support tighter vaping restrictions.

The government of Quebec has been accused of “misrepresenting” the lung illness outbreak EVALI in order to justify its “harmful” new e-cigarette proposals.

The Canadian Vaping Association (CVA) has accused health minister Christian Dubé of disregarding clear scientific evidence and says the proposals could push vapers back to smoking.

“While nicotine vaping was not the cause of the EVALI outbreak, it should serve as a warning of the dangers of the blackmarket,” said CVA Director Executive Darryl Tempest.

“Minister Dubé’s proposed policy will not only force thousands of Quebecois back to smoking but will expand the black-market.”

Experts have raised concerns that heavy regulations could lead to higher rates of illicit trade. Unlike registered vaping companies, black-market sellers are not subject to consumer protection laws, which could put vapers in harm’s way.

“Should this policy be implemented, Minister Dubé must acknowledge that he will be responsible for endangering public health,” said Tempest.

The policy features several steps drafted to minimise vaping uptake amongst Quebec’s youth, the most troubling of which being a complete ban on flavoured e-liquids with the exception of tobacco.

Dubé insists the strategy is in the best interest of public health, claiming that flavoured e-liquids are the main driver for

underage vaping.

He said: “With the growing popularity of vaporization products, especially among young people, it becomes imperative to act to prevent a new generation from becoming addicted to nicotine.”

However, the misconception that flavoured e-liquids encourage youth vaping has been largely discredited.

According to a 2019 CDC report, less than 30 percent of young people took up vaping as a direct result of flavoured e-liquids. Instead, many blamed natural curiosity for their current habit.

Additionally, a Yale research study revealed that “adults who began vaping non-tobacco-flavoured e-cigarettes were more likely to quit smoking,” indicating that Dubé’s proposal could pose a serious threat to adult smokers.

The researchers highlighted that “while proposed flavour bans are well-intentioned, they have disastrous outcomes.

“Legislation on vaping flavours must take the facts of smoking cessation and harm reduction into account, and we urge legislators against the widespread implementation of such bans.”

SIGN OF THE TIMES

Now in California, your neighbours could take you to court for the ‘crime’ of vaping at home

At least 60 local governments across California have embraced bans or restrictions against the sale of e-cigarettes.

With more stringent regulations on the horizon, it seems this could be a sign of things to come for American vapers.

The latest of these changes took place in Concord CA, where city officials approved legislation to ban the use of e-cigarettes in residential homes.

Although this is far from the first attempt to pass a residential vaping ban, Concord’s success hints at tougher landscape ahead for vapers.

The ban came into effect on January 1 and will prevent residents of multi-dwelling units – including apartment buildings, care facilities, mobile home parks and duplexes - from smoking and vaping within the property.

The new law leaves vapers with little choice in where they can use their devices as it also extends to decks, balconies and other “exclusive-use enclosed areas.”

City officials have pointed to the supposed “danger” that secondhand vaping can pose to neighbours as justification for the ban, despite scientific evidence largely discrediting this claim.

A similar move to impose a residential vaping ban in San Francisco in order to combat second-hand smoke in multi-unit apartment buildings has been put on hold amid fears it could be harmful to long-term renters.

In a 2018 evidence review by Public Health England (PHE), it was

revealed that “there have been no identified health risks of passive vaping to the health of bystanders.”

While violators of the proposed San Francisco ban would have been hit with a $1,000 fine, a provision was included to prevent landlords from harassing and evicting tenants.

Meanwhile, Concord’s policy subjects apartment dwellers caught breaching the city ban to potential civil lawsuits from both landlords and neighbours.

“If this approach also makes e-cigarettes less easily accessible, less palatable or acceptable… then it causes harm by perpetuating smoking.”

Critics of the ban have highlighted that, while it’s not unreasonable for people to want a smoke and vape-free living environment, it would be more beneficial for property owners to decide their own lease conditions.

As the Royal College of Physicians argued in their report on tobacco harm reduction – excessive measures against vaping can be unintentionally harmful.

“If this approach also makes e-cigarettes less easily accessible, less palatable or acceptable…then it causes harm by perpetuating smoking.”

TAKING THE LEAD

UKVIA Director General John Dunne advises the UK parliament ahead of an upcoming international summit.

UK officials have called on UKVIA Director General John Dunne to share his expertise ahead of an international summit discussing vaping and tobacco harm reduction.

The UK parliamentary vaping group will use Dunne’s testimony as guidance during a World Health Organization (WHO) consultation later this year.

The meeting will have a significant impact on the future of the global industry, with advocates hoping the UK’s liberal approach to vaping will be reflected by international policymakers.

During a COVID-safe evidence session with MPs, Dunne said: “The UK has a huge duty of care to take a positive stance and challenge interpretations…Britain’s newly independent status really gives us an opportunity to lead this on the world stage.”

The government-led vaping group, directed by Mark Pawsey MP, plans to defend the country’s current policies and is keen to advertise the successes of the UK’s progressive attitude.

Dunne – along with Clive Bates of The counterfactual and other expert witnesses – emphasised the value of e-cigarettes and vaping products as harm reduction tools, highlighting the potential benefit they could provide to public health.

Also present at the session were Professor Gerry Stimson of Knowledge-Action-Change (KAC) and Adam Smith Institute Head of Programmes, Daniel Pryor.

Following the session, Dunne said: “I was happy to accept the

invitation, because the UKVIA believe we have an incredible opportunity to spread the word – that innovative, appropriatelyregulated vaping industries save lives.

“Post-Brexit Britain is newly independent, which means we can drive this positive message home like never before.

“We can be rightly proud of the UK’s record on harm reduction, but we must not be complacent. Regressive, prohibition-style strategies are alive and well internationally, and we must not let them undo all that has been achieved here.”

He stressed the need for UK lawmakers to maintain a ‘robust, evidence-based’ mindset, highlighting the need for us to “defend the gains we have made domestically, empower positive change internationally and confirm Britain’s role as a world leader in harm reduction.”

VAPING ENTREPRENEUR WITH DON THOMPSON, THE ZEN VAPER

42 VM32
FEATURE

The vape industry is full of humble beginnings and rising stars, but there’s no story quite like that of Don Thompson, Founder and CEO of The Zen Vaper.

Don’s curiosity for vaping came after a chance encounter on a college campus. An aspiring audio engineer at the time, he was struck by a cloud of strawberry-scented e-liquid.

A friend educated him about vaping and Don quickly realised it could help his then partner quit smoking.

To support her, Don also took up vaping, buying himself a device and starting his ‘quest’ to find the ultimate Strawberry Cream juice.

It was here that Don noticed the lack of quality e-liquids on the market so he set out to make his own and this led to the creation of The Zen Vaper.

As Don began the long and time-consuming process of perfecting the exact flavours an endless ritual of repeated cycles of ‘vaping and tasting’ began.

“Some friends said: ‘Man if these things that you’re giving us are your mistakes, you need to start selling whatever you’re keeping, because this stuff is lovely…it’s sublime.”

So, at the ‘gentle insistence’ of his family, Don founded The Zen Vaper in July 2016 – just eight days before FDA regulations hit.

Despite the onslaught of policies and paperwork, Don remained steadfast in his newfound mission to help smokers kick their cigarette habit. He had previously lost both his parents to smokingrelated lung cancer, with his mother tragically passing away just three months before the birth of her youngest grandson.

After that it became a personal vendetta for Don, to honour his parents. “I had this idea that I wanted to be there for a person the day they actually decided to quit,” he said. “That’s the kind of thing that wakes me up in the morning, the kind of thing that makes 14hour days okay.” Don’s role in the vaping industry extends far beyond selling e-liquid. He contributes heavily to tobacco harm reduction groups and visits local policymakers to educate them on the benefits of e-cigarettes and steer them away from misleading, anti-vape propaganda. “I literally almost went out of business twice because the media started to vilify vaping…which is akin to vilifying the needle for a heroin addiction,” he said. “I understand that this kind of thing is going on all over the country, but we’re not in a reactive mode, we should all be in an educational mode.” Unfortunately, The Zen Vaper was not immune to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, with the brand struggling its way through national lockdowns and widespread store closures. He said: “I saw myself digging into my cash reserves and thinking: “Okay, what do I sell next in order to pay the bills?

“But I decided, almost out of stubbornness: “No, I’m passionate about this, I’m not in this to simply make money, I’m in it to help people quit and live better lives.” Eventually, the industry began to ‘find its footing’ again and despite the pitfalls of 2020, The Zen Vaper successfully launched in Canada and, once they pass the TPD process, the UK and EU markets are next. While Don realises that the continued growth of The Zen Vaper leads to positive change for smokers, he also maintains that he wants to stick to his roots and stay small enough that he still wakes up every day eager to get to work.

“It’s not necessarily about having a lot of employees and becoming a corporation. It’s about being able to connect with people, whether they are shop owners, sales staff, or just regular retail customers,” he said. “I live a simple life; I don’t have a lot of stuff. My car is 10 years old, I have very basic furniture, I don’t live a lavish lifestyle, but that’s my choice. For me, it’s to live simply and live honestly.”

DIARY OF A VAPER:

Words: Caroline Barry

I started smoking because I was always the designated driver. I didn’t drink, but I would take my mates out, so it was a way to feel included.

I was a bit naive thinking that I could take it or leave it whenever I wanted, but by then it had snowballed from a social activity to a full-time habit.

It was a chance encounter with a work colleague that led to me taking up vaping. I had started a new job and was working with a guy who had quit smoking using e-cigarettes. He showed me the website where he got all his stuff and what mods, tanks and e-liquids were. He even taught me about nicotine levels.

Because I was smoker, he suggested I start with a higher nicotine concentration before dropping down. My first device was a Hells Gate Mini mech mod.

I didn’t have a preconception of what vaping was when I started because it was all such an unknown back then. This would have been around 2015. I got into cloud chasing and all that stuff as I’m a bit of a geek so the technical side like coil building appealed to me.

It wasn’t as easy to get information and learn the language back then, which meant I had to do a lot of research and learn what I could from my friend.

I didn’t know any of it when I started, so I would look at what Americans were doing and went into different vape shops.

There also weren’t a lot of YouTubers and online personalities, but I did watch RipTrippers for product reviews.

When I get really into something, I will research it as much as possible, but I was worried that some of the sites weren’t safe or legitimate – it was hard to tell sometimes.

I can get socially anxious, so I needed time to build myself up before going into physical shops and asking for advice.

We all know the risks of smoking - both to health and finances - but with vaping I smell better, I can taste things properly and my dental health is much better.

Vaping changed my life.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS

Prohibition continues to break new ground in the vaping and CBD industries, despite the pitfalls of 2020 and continued national lockdowns.

From humble beginnings back in 2012, to domineering the e-liquid market, family-led Prohibition has become a widelyrecognised name amongst vapers. After a somewhat ‘eventful’ 2020, we caught up with Billy and the team to hear how they plan to take the brand to new heights.

As a brand that continues to innovate and move forwards, what can consumers expect from Prohibition in 2021?

Innovation, it’s always been the foundation for Prohibition and 2021 will be no different. We actively made the decision to use the change in pace across the world to develop new products with exciting USPs. We’ve also been working closely with our brand partners on flavour development and marketing, in order to release new and exciting products for consumers all over the globe. Keep an eye on those store shelves!

How would you describe the current state of the UK vape market? I think it’s fair to say the vape industry has been struck by the burden of the pandemic in similar ways to other industries.

With the closing of retailers across the country, COVID-19 has encouraged creativity in many areas of our industry. We’ve seen an increase in online sales and with the support of our global distribution partners, we’ve been able to solidify healthy growth – which is something we feel very lucky to report.

With the public’s support in following the government guidelines, we’re confident that once stores begin to reopen, we’ll see a steady return to the buoyant market we have seen in the past.

As an industry what do you think we could collectively do to help smokers switch to vaping?

Educating people and highlighting the benefits of making the switch to a healthier alternative is at the heart of what we do.

Smoking traditional cigarettes has been proven to heighten risks associated with COVID-19. Now more than ever, people should

consider the switch and it’s important that vape companies actively broadcast this message. Reputable stores are run by passionate vapers, who are usually more than happy to offer guidance and support when it comes to choosing the correct products.Transparency in products is also a fundamental requirement. Consumers deserve to know that the product they’re buying is fit for purpose. Mandatory testing of all Prohibition products by our in-house state-of-the-art science facilities, is a key measure implemented to safeguard our consumers.

Previously you said you weren’t heavily affected by COVID-19, with the national lockdowns continuing, does this still stand?

Prohibition operates in the heart of Kent, one of the worst hit areas in the country. But our team has remained vigilant, working round the clock inside a building that’s been split in half, mitigating crosscontamination and risk. We’ve been on a mission to maintain functionality and ensure we deliver products to our brands and retail partners in the safest ways possible. I’m happy to report, that although it has been tough at times, we have been able to deliver on all levels, with minimal disruption.

Finally, is there anything you would like to say to your dedicated Prohibition customers?

Absolutely! We’d like to extend huge thanks to each and every one of you. Without the hard work and dedication of the brand owners we work with, we just wouldn’t be able to report increased growth year-on-year. We’re also incredibly grateful and humbled by our direct consumers. We promise to keep innovating and pushing boundaries in both quality and taste.

PHILIPPINES FUNDING UNDER FIRE

Bloomberg Philanthropies may have tried to influence vaping policy, critics say.

FEATURE

Anti-vaping organisation Bloomberg Philanthropies has been attempting to influence the Philippines’ tobacco control policy, according to public health experts.

University of Ottawa Centre for Health Law and Policy advisory committee chair Prof. David Sweanor said it happened when the body released funds to the country’s Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).

He said the funding could take away the FDA’s impartiality when implementing guidelines on vaping and heated tobacco products (HTPs).

Sweanor said: “It is essential that regulatory bodies have the trust of the public. Accepting foreign funding from sources with a vested interest in compromising the FDA’s independence can rapidly destroy that trust.

“In this case, the money ultimately comes from a US entity with an abstinence-only agenda on low-risk alternatives to cigarettes.”

In December 2020, Representatives Deogracias Victor Savellano and Estrellita Suansing called for a Congressional probe into the FDA’s ‘questionable’ acceptance of private foreign funding.

The inquiry seeks to address whether Bloomberg pressed for specific policies against the vape industry in disregard of the welfare of consumers.

Former Action on Health (ASH) director, Clive Bates, said: “Governments and their agencies should not take money from Bloomberg’s foundation or the worldwide complex of organizations that it funds. “The duty of the Philippines FDA is to look after the welfare of Filipinos, not to take instructions from foreign advocacy

operations.” Bates said that Bloomberg is using his wealth and influence to promote his anti-vaping agenda and a ‘quit or die’ approach to tobacco control despite having very little public health experience. Meanwhile, Michelle Minton of the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), said that several US philanthropists have dedicated huge resources to influencing the policy decisions of other countries.

Minton said it was ‘disturbing’ that these individuals disregarded the needs and interests of local populations when ‘imposing their moral agenda’ in countries where smoking cessation options were limited.

She said: “American lobby groups continue to pressure authorities in those nations to ban the lower risk nicotine, denying people the choice to switch to products that could spare them from the death and disease caused by smoking.

“That’s not charity. It is colonialism and a monstrous violation of human rights.” Since 2006, Michael Bloomberg has donated more than $1 billion to support initiatives that reduce tobacco use in low and middle-income countries. The Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use is implemented through partner organisations, including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and Tobacco-Free Kids Action Fund, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation and the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 2007, the University of Bath Tobacco Control Research Group received $20 million from Bloomberg Philanthropies to launch a global tobacco industry watchdog.

Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products (STOP) is ‘designed to understand, expose and counter the industry’s influence on key public health policies.’

SOME QUICK FACTS TO WIN OVER THE VAPE SCEPTICS

There’s a hell of a lot of vaping misinformation out there and the same myths crop up time and time again and refuse to go away.

Thankfully, the UK is well ahead of the rest of the world in endorsing vaping as a less harmful alternative to smoking. We have the UK’s world-beating research to thank for that.

Here, we’ve collected some key studies that debunk the myths around vaping in one handy guide. Next time someone attacks your lifestyle choice or you are answering questions from a curious smoker, give them this to read!

52 VM32
FEATURE

FICTION ‘VAPING IS THE SAME AS SMOKING’

This myth is probably the easiest one to debunk.

Vaping is lacking two key components that make smoking so harmful. One, tobacco, and two, combustion.

E-cigarettes heat a solution containing nicotine, flavourings and carriers vegetable glycerine (VG) and propylene glycol (PG).

Cancer Research UK advice states: “The evidence so far indicates that e-cigarettes are far less harmful than smoking as they don’t contain tobacco or involve combustion. There is no smoke, tar or carbon monoxide, and studies looking at key toxicants have generally found much lower levels than in cigarettes.

“They do contain nicotine, which is addictive, but isn’t responsible for the major health harms from smoking.

FICTION

‘VAPING DOESN’T HELP YOU QUIT SMOKING’

This claim is often made by public health figures in the US, which remains notoriously sceptical of vaping despite the evidence coming from the UK.

However, countless studies have shown that not only does vaping help you quit smoking – it is better than other quit methods.

A 2019 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that vaping was twice as successful at stopping people smoking than nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

A UCL study published the same year concluded that e-cigarettes help up to 70,000 smokers in England quit each year.

This is another narrative popular in the US, where a debate around a ‘teen vaping epidemic’ has been raging for three years now.

But is there such an epidemic in the UK?

Not according to a recent review of UK studies which concluded: “Surveys across the UK show a consistent pattern: most e-cigarette experimentation does not turn into regular use, and levels of regular use in young people who have never smoked remain very low.”

This belief stems from a spate of lung injuries in the US dubbed ‘EVALI’ by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A total of 68 people died between August and December 2019, which led to regulators around the world cracking down on e-cigarettes.

However, the CDC has since acknowledged that illicit cannabis vaping products were to blame – not regulated nicotine e-liquids. The liquids in question contained vitamin E acetate, which is prohibited as an e-liquid additive in the UK.

The CDC says: “Vitamin E acetate is strongly linked to the EVALI outbreak. It has been found in product samples tested by FDA and state laboratories and in patient lung fluid samples tested by CDC from geographically diverse states.

“Vitamin E acetate has not been found in the lung fluid of people that do not have EVALI.”

GOVERNMENT CONSIDERS MAJOR TRPR SHAKE-UP

The Department of Health and Social Care has launched a public consultation into the country’s vaping regulations

The laws governing the manufacture and sale of vape products in the EU have been controversial since the beginning. To vape sceptics, as nicotine products that loosely simulate smoking, they should have been treated much like cigarettes. But to vape advocates, the TPD was too strict, with provisions that could deter smokers from switching.

But as a so-called youth vaping epidemic unfolded in the US, people on both sides now agree that the UK’s interpretation of the TPD, the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR) got the balance about right…yet there is always room for improvement. Now, with Brexit finally behind us, the British government is drawing up a new Tobacco Control Plan and has launched a consultation to get the public’s view on the past five years of the TRPR with a view to drawing up a new framework. UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) director-general, John Dunne, welcomed the consultation announcement. Dunne stressed the key role vaping plays in public health and helping the government meet its smoke-free 2013 goal. He said: “As an industry, the vaping community has done much to provide vital information and alternatives to smokers for many years, but there is only so much we can do in the confines of current EU regulations.

“With the support of all stakeholders, including Government and regulators, the potential improvements to public health can increase tremendously.”

The consultation document suggests that the government is committed to developing a framework that encourages smokers to switch to e-cigarettes which are ‘far less harmful to health than smoking, and can help people stop smoking,’

especially combined with the support of stop smoking services.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) cites the recent Cochrane review, which found that e-cigarettes were more effective than nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and a report showing that vaping contributed to 70,000 additional quits per year in England alone.

But the consultation may prove far from a home run in the current climate. European nations are beginning to crack down heavily on the flavoured e-liquids that make vaping such an attractive, and successful, alternative to combustible tobacco.

Even if the UK does not take the lead of its European neighbours, its commitment to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) could leave it in a tricky position. The WHO remains highly sceptical of the potential for vaping to reduce tobacco-related harms, instead continuing to back pharmaceutical initiatives like patches and gum.

The health body’s stance is frequently challenged by public health figures in the UK. In response to a Q&A published on the WHO website in 2020, Prof Peter Hajek, Director of the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), said:

“The WHO has a history of anti-vaping activism that is damaging their reputation. This document is particularly malign.

“Practically all the factual statements in it are wrong.” Still, even if the government faces pressure from the WHO to tighten the rules, the UK’s recent record on tobacco control will be difficult to ignore.

Smoking prevalence dropped to an all-time low of 14.1 percent in 2019 as e-cigarette use rose beyond the three million mark. Make sure you have your say on the Gov.UK website before 11:59pm on March 19, 2021.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION AGAINST FLAVOUR BANS

Dutch vapers take to the streets and lobby politicians in an overwhelming show of opposition against a controversial flavour ban proposal

Dutch vapers, along with the World Vapers’ Alliance, have taken to the streets of The Hague in a peaceful – and COVID-safe – protest against a proposal to ban flavoured e-liquids.

The group illuminated buildings of the Dutch political capital with a lightshow, expressing their disappointment with lawmakers for considering such a ‘misguided’ policy.

The slogan ‘Save Flavours, Save Lives’ was at the core of the movement, with critics of the ban highlighting that it could have a severe impact on public health. The protest coincided with an online forum around the proposal, with World Vapers’ Alliance Director Michael Landl calling the installation an “incredible public consultation response.”

Policymakers are now being urged to reconsider the needs of the local vaping community and “drop this ridiculous legislation.”

If passed, the ban would see all e-liquid flavours – excluding tobacco – removed from the market, while cigarettes would remain on sale until 2024.

The proposal comes after health minister Paul Blokhuis set out to reduce youth uptake of vaping, citing ‘exotic’ e-liquids as a driving force for young vapers.

He said: “It remains unacceptable that 20,000 people in our country die every year from the effects of smoking and about 75 children start smoking every day.

“The new insights confirm that the smoke-free generation that is arriving must also be an e-cigarette-free generation.

“There is no room for e-cigarettes with all kinds of tempting flavours.” However, the flavoured e-liquid ban has seen the highest percentage of negative responses recorded on a Dutch public health consultation.

60 VM32
FEATURE

At the time of writing, over 800 public submissions have been recorded on the official government website, 98 percent of which were against the controversial ban.

Consumers and advocacy groups have urged lawmakers to look to the science, accusing the motion as being fuelled by ‘crooked reasoning and factual inaccuracies.’

Clive Bates, from The counterfactual, tweeted: “European vapers should be on red-alert. The bollocks-driven American moral panic is heading to a government near you.”

Advocacy groups are also taking a stand against the flavour ban, encouraging consumers to continue challenging potentially harmful government legislation.

“I am delighted to see common sense and logic prevail. When 98 percent of submissions are against the flavour ban, this sends a crystal-clear message to the government: it is time to scrap this terrible idea and move on,” said Landl.

“Out of respect for citizens and on the basis of scientific evidence, dropping the flavour ban is the only possible way forward. Anything else would be a disgrace.”

Landl highlighted that the flavour ban could put nearly 260,000 vapers at risk of returning to combustible cigarettes, with 3.1 percent of Dutch adults relying on vaping as a smoking cessation tool.

He added: “The second extension of the consultation shows that the whole process was flawed from the get-go, and that grassroots pressure from vapers can change policies.

“This is encouraging, but the fight isn’t over. We need to keep the pressure up to make sure lawmakers won’t push the ban through at a later stage.”

Meanwhile, restrictions banning the display of tobacco products in Netherland’s supermarkets have now been extended to include e-cigarettes.

Originally introduced in July 2020, the ban was updated on January 1 and now prohibits the advertisement of nicotine and non-nicotine containing vaping products.

The ban, imposed by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, applies to all online stores and retail outlets but specialist vape and tobacco stores can apply for an exemption.

CANADA’S NIC ‘N’ TEEN PROBLEM

anada gets a lot of column inches in these pages with good reason. By the time the pitching phase for each new edition of Vapouround comes along, it seems there’s yet another new vape regulation proposed at the provincial or federal level.

This time around it’s Health Canada that is proposing a 20mg/ml cap on nicotine content for e-liquids, much like restrictions already in place in British Columbia and Nova Scotia and tabled for Quebec.

The government’s regulatory impact analysis says: “The proposed limit of 20 mg/ml is expected to reduce the appeal of vaping products to youth and potentially reduce the likelihood that youth will experiment with or continue to use these products, which may also lead them to tobacco use.

“It would apply to all vaping products regardless of the type of nicotine, including those in salt form.”

Manufacturers caught flouting the law could face a fine of £50,000 if caught selling or stocking prohibited liquids by government inspectors. The public consultation ends on March 4.

The Canadian government faces having to maintain a familiar, but difficult, balancing act. The Tobacco and Vaping Products Act (TVPA) was enacted in 2018 with the aim of ensuring adult smokers had access to reduced risk products while minimising youth appeal and access.

But in the years since, increased youth use mirroring that of the US in previous years has made it harder for vaping advocates to extol the adult harm reduction benefits.

According to David Hammond, professor

in the School of Public Health at the University of Waterloo, 11 percent of Canadian high school students reported vaping in 2019.

Hammond said: "We have also seen an increase in the number of youths who report indicators of dependence in the last two years."

The Canadian Vaping Association (CVA) has suggested an alternative approach which would minimise youth use while maintaining adult access.

The organisation would see high nicotine products restricted to adult-only vape shops. This would ensure that young people were not subjected to ads for the kinds of high salt nicotine products implicated in America’s so-called youth vaping epidemic.

The CVA also noted that despite the 20mg cap, Action on Smoking and Health research found that 60,000 former

smokers in the UK relied on e-liquids stronger than 20mg. Making it harder to access these liquids could hinder Canada in achieving its five percent smoking rate by 2035.

Darryl Tempest, executive director of the CVA, said: “It is without question that Canada must act to restrict nicotine concentrations to protect youth, but it should not be an all-or-nothing approach.

Ontario has restricted high nicotine products to age-restricted environments, effectively eliminating all retail access points for youth. This policy has proven effective in mitigating youth use while balancing the needs of adult smokers.

The CVA encourages the Government of Canada to adopt this policy federally.” But if the Canadian Cancer Society has its way, Canada may soon see an ‘all-or-nothing approach’ when it comes to vaping.

The foundation has backed the proposed nicotine cap, saying that ‘a multi-faceted approach is needed to reduce youth vaping.’

Senior policy analyst Rob Cunningham said: “We applaud these regulations and support the federal government moving as soon as possible to implement them and to adopt other measures, including a comprehensive ban on flavours and a tax on e-cigarettes.”

Canada may soon find itself in a familiar situation to the US. Its neighbour’s industry regulator has also publicly encouraged smokers to switch to vaping as a less harmful alternative while, at the same time, making it more and more difficult for the industry to flourish.

US TAX HIKE CONTINUES

In spite of pleas from vaping advocates, US policymakers made resolutions to introduce further taxes on e-cigarettes.

Despite continued warnings from vape advocacy groups, policymakers across the globe are still campaigning for increased tax excise on e-cigarettes.

Lawmakers are being urged to follow the guidance of scientific evidence, rather than equating vaping with the dangers of smoking tobacco.

Following a recent consultation on the Tobacco Excise Directive, the European Commission expressed its intention to tax vaping products at a similar rate to cigarettes.

World Vapers’ Alliance (WVA) Director Michael Landl criticised the strategy, highlighting the impact on adult smokers and the lowincome population as points of concern.

He said: “Making vaping less appealing to smokers by higher prices will discourage current smokers from switching to less harmful alternatives.”

It appears Landl doesn’t stand alone, with 84 percent of associations and citizens that responded to the consultation acknowledging the potential harm that a tax structure like this could pose.

“I am delighted by the overwhelming number of responses in favour of vaping to this consultation. It shows that many people know the potential for harm reduction of vaping,” said Landl. “What policymakers need to understand is that tax hikes on vaping will lead to people switching back to smoking, an outcome absolutely nobody wishes for.

Oregon

A series of vaping and cigarette tax increases are set to roll out in 2021 after the state voted to introduce taxes on e-cigarettes for the first time. The motion will align Oregon more closely with Washington and California with regards to cigarette taxation, with packs seeing a $2 - $2.50 increase while vaping products will be taxed at 65 percent of their wholesale purchase price, a change that has raised alarm with local vendors.

Maryland

Lawmakers in Baltimore want to introduce a 30 percent excise tax on the distribution of all electronic smoking devices. While supporters of the bill claim it could have significant health benefits for the city, critics have stressed that it could have the opposite effect.

“Taxing vapor products like combustible cigarettes…is a move in the wrong direction,” said Consumer Advocates for Smoke Free Alternatives Association CEO, Alex Clark.

“Increasing the cost of these products is likely to discourage people from switching to a smoke free alternative.”

The legislation has been submitted to the Taxation, Finance and Economic Development Committee for consideration.

Alaska

Despite backlash from the local vaping community, Anchorage, Alaska, has passed a bill to tax e-cigarettes to the same tax rates as tobacco products.

The legislation came into effect on January 1 and will tax vaping products at 55 percent of their wholesale value.

While city officials claim the bill will combat ‘teen vaping trends’, local vendors say the move will be is ‘problematic’ for adult smokers.

Colorado

Colorado voters passed a new bill that will incrementally raise the tax on vaping products over the next seven years. In the first state vape tax in Colorado, the measure creates a rolling tax on e-cigarettes that runs parallel to the state’s existing rates for tobacco products.

“If we want to reduce smoking-induced

burdens on public health, access and affordability to vaping products need to be guaranteed.”

Unfortunately, the US has taken a leading role in the fight against vaping, with several states and cities introducing controversial new taxes this year.

Here are some of the latest bills and proposals to hit American vapers.

Coming into effect in 2021 at 30 percent of the manufacturer’s list price (MLP), the tax will increase to 62 percent by July 2027. Online purchases made to out-of-state retailers will also be subject to the tax rates outlined in the bill.

Georgia

Georgia imposed a new excise tax on vaping products from January 1, to tax single-use devices and open systems at seven percent of the wholesale cost. Closed systems will be taxed at five cents per millilitre under the measure. State representative Bonnie Rich said: “The tax attempted to mirror, as closely as possible, the cigarette excise tax that we already have.”

A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS

Vape taxes and flavour bans are two of the most highly controversial topics in the industry, especially as they become ever more popular with regulators and lawmakers.

The previous feature in this edition looked at vape taxes and here we spotlight some of the latest developments in the state of play of flavour bans in the US.

When either of these measures are put forward, regulators almost always say that they are acting in order to protect children from the horrors of vaping and seem to ignore all the evidence that supports the contention that vaping is not a gateway into tobacco.

As flavour bans spread across the US, we look at the states which have already passed laws and taxes.

What is beyond debate though, is that punitive taxes and banning flavours both have the effect of preventing smokers from switching to vapers and encouraging vapers or dual users to revert to smoking.

Here is a look at some of the flavour bans which are currently in existence in the USA.

68 VM32
FEATURE

Massachusetts

Massachusetts imposed a tax and flavour ban in December 2019 with the introduction of a law which also allowed police to seize vehicles in which they found untaxed vaping products.

Vapers can only obtain flavoured e-liquids by visiting a small number of special smoking bars but it is far from ideal to help smokers quit by making them visit stores where cigarettes are sold.

The ban also sparked a rise in black market vape products with the associated health and safety risks that this brings.

World Vapers’ Alliance Director Michael Landl said: “After the flavour ban was implemented, cigarette sales in the region increased, which makes it clear that flavour bans lead to more people going back to smoking. It is clear that the Massachusetts flavour ban has failed and even does harm to public health. If we want to reduce smoking-induced burdens, the ban needs to be reconsidered immediately.”

New Jersey

The New Jersey bill came into effect in 2020. It prohibits the sale and distribution of e-cigarettes having a “distinguishable flavour, taste or aroma.” There are also large fines for those who are a caught with $250 for a first offence. This rises to $500 for a second offence and then $1000 per incident.

Rui Alves from Ironbound Vapes changed from a vape store to a newsagents after the ban meant demand dropped. Rui said: “Most, if not all, of my former customers have gone back to cigarettes and I ended up selling whatever inventory I had left to the few remaining customers I did retain. It’s sad and tragic that the government decided to ban flavours limiting them to only tobacco and menthol. This decision caused thousands of not millions in the state to revert back to smoking.”

New York

New York introduced a flavour ban in 2020 citing a rise in the numbers of underage vaping as the reason. The ban covers all flavoured cigarettes and liquids apart from tobacco. It makes New York the largest state to ban flavours.

We spoke to vape store owner Lane Shannon about his decision to carry on selling vapes at his store. “The ban is catastrophic to the entire industry.” Lane says. “The reaction was a mixture between fear and anger. This is a life-saving technology and it was a consumer driven answer to a problem that the government couldn’t solve.

Now the government wants to regulate the solution but they are still allowing cigarettes to be sold. We are not going to allow the less harmful alternative to be taken away from consumers who choose not to smoke.”

Rhode Island

Rhode Island was the third state to ban flavoured vaping products in 2020.

Governor Gina Raimondo introduced legislation, H7171 which includes an 80 percent wholesale tax on e-liquids and a 35 mg/ml cap on nicotine content.

The new rule includes a licensing scheme for stores and requires newly licensed businesses to “self-certify…that none of the electronic nicotine-delivery system products they sell, or offer for sale, or possess with intent to sell or offer for sale to consumers in Rhode Island are flavoured electronic nicotine-delivery system products.”

California

Towards the end of 2020, California passed bill SB 793 which would have brought in a ban on flavours, small cigars and menthol cigarettes. It would not make it a crime to own flavoured vaping products but store owners would be fined for selling them. It also places mail order restrictions too.

A campaign against the ban gained more than 623,000 signatures which has delayed implementation of the measure. The state must now verify that the signatures are legitimate, and if found to be valid, voters will be asked to decide whether the ban should become law in November 2022.

BATTLE FOR HEARTS AND MINDS

Vaping advocates in uphill battle to convince South African regulators they are part of the solution and not the problem

Words: Gordon Stribling

FEATURE

The battle for fair vaping regulations unites advocacy groups around the world. At the centre is the key distinction between tobacco, which kills an estimated seven million people a year, and nicotine vape products, which are part of the solution.

The Vapour Products Association of South Africa (VPASA) is fighting this battle on the front lines. Founded in 2017, the organisation is trying to work with the government to ensure that new tobacco regulations ensure smokers have access to lower risk alternatives.

VPASA CEO, Asanda Gcoyi, explains:

“The proposed new regulation was taking the previous regulation on tobacco and just adding a part on vaping. Obviously that was not going to work because you can’t just regulate vaping the same way as tobacco.

“We were told last year that they are fast-tracking the bill, which obviously, we are fighting.”

South Africa’s industry is still in its infancy, with 350,000 vapers verses eight million smokers. It is predominantly made up of small businesses operating from brick-and-mortar stores, but vape products are also sold in petrol stations and pharmacies.

VPASA estimates that South Africa had 4,000 vape-related jobs before the coronavirus pandemic, with the industry valued at more than one billion Rand (£49 million), growing five percent year-on-year. But then the country introduced a ban on all tobacco and vape sales during lockdown, hitting the industry hard and undoing much of the good faith that VPASA has worked so hard to build.

Gcoyi said that prior to the ban the government had started to recognise that there was a difference between smoking and vaping but then moved backwards. He said: “Fast forward two months, they said, ‘You know what, if we ban tobacco, we ban all related products’ and, of course ‘related products’ includes vaping so that was very bad on many fronts.”

Of course, the tobacco ban did not mean people stopped smoking. Cigarettes remained widely available, with many smuggled in from neighbouring Zimbabwe while harmful counterfeits packed with what looked like chipboard were seized by police.

Vaping products were much harder to come by, which left thousands of nicotine consumers little choice but to return to smoking.

“But most worrying for us was the loss of jobs. From the 4,000 jobs that we had, 20 percent of those were lost permanently during that five months of lockdown, which is huge, not just for the industry but also for the country.

“South Africa has one of the largest unemployment rates in the world and we are pushing the small business element, because that’s our one and only hope in terms of creating jobs. So to kill that element at the same time that the narrative changed was a double-blow.”

Gcoyi is confident that the industry will succeed in bringing vapers back. The real challenge is to reverse the damage caused by media misrepresentation so that more smokers feel comfortable to make the switch. VPASA has conducted educational webinars and Q&A sessions to educate the media and the public and really go back to basics.

Beyond that, VPASA is determined to maintain lines of communication to ensure that the new regulations are the best they can be for vapers and speculative smokers alike.

“What we’ve seen, even during lockdown, is that the walls have come down. Regulators are taking our calls now. There are a lot of elements in the current bill that we are not happy with. But again, as with any negotiations and advocacy work, there’s going to be a give and take. “Places like the UK provide a really compelling case to say it can be done. I really am optimistic and my optimism is premised entirely on the lines of engagement that have been open, which is always a good step forward.”

LOCK DOWN, SMOKE UP?

America’s cigarette sales rise is the product of ongoing anti-vaping hostility.

Words: Gordon Stribling

FEATURE

Most of us will surely have picked up some less-than-positive behaviours during the pandemic. Endless Uber Eats, drunken midweek Zoom get-togethers and a cancelled gym membership will all have had a devastating impact on our health that will take more than the occasional dip into the fruit bowl to undo.

But the rise in tobacco sales could be more devastating yet, and it’s been a long time coming.

A 2020 Euromonitor survey found that 73 percent of Americans believed vaping to be as harmful as smoking or worse. This comes after a three-year youth vaping epidemic narrative, largely pinned on JUUL which continues to be dogged by claims of targeting its products at teens and enticing them with flavours. JUUL vehemently denies both claims.

Marlboro-maker Altria has a 35 percent share of JUUL, snapped up at the vape giant’s 2018 peak, as well as a number of other interests outside of traditional tobacco products, including nicotine patches and its flagship IQOS heat-not-burn device.

But Altria’s initial $12.8 billion investment is now worth just $1.6 billion, reflecting a rapidly diminishing trust among the public over the safety of vaping, as well as reduced access to JUUL’s once-varied flavour line-up.

While Altria’s tobacco sales increased by less than one percent, any increase is alarming in the midst of a virus that can have such a devastating effect on the respiratory system.

The effects of the coronavirus can linger for months, with some individuals suffering from fatigue and breathlessness long after a positive diagnosis.

The US vaping market has been hit hard by increased taxes, flavour bans and confusion about the relative risks of smoking and vaping.

Conflicting stories about the impact of smoking, vaping and nicotine in general on COVID-19 have no doubt added to the uncertainty.

Since May last year, a number of studies have shown that smokers are less likely to develop COVID-19. But experts agree that smokers often suffer much more severe symptoms than non-smokers.

A recent study by Kings College London (KCL) found that smoking doubles the risk of developing severe coronavirus and needing hospitalisation.

In one Dutch case reported in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, both lungs of a 38-year-old woman collapsed more than a month after her first symptoms. The researchers cannot be certain that COVID-19 was the cause, but she presented with no other risk factors.

They were also 14 percent more likely to suffer the three main COVID-19 symptoms: persistent cough, fever and shortness of breath.

Much of the current research focuses on the smoking behaviours of hospitalised patients rather than vaping.

However, Public Health England (PHE) maintains that nicotine consumers would likely be much better off continuing to vape than reverting back to tobacco during the pandemic.

Public Health England guidance states: “There is very little evidence on vaping and COVID-19 and it is unknown whether vaping makes you more susceptible to severe disease if you become infected. If it does, the risk is likely to be much less than if you smoke.”

FACT CHECK

Did a study show that vapers are 17 percent more likely to transmit COVID?

The teen vaping ‘epidemic.’ EVALI. The gateway effect. Panic about vaping is as much of a mainstay in the modern media cycle as the culture wars and life hacks.

In this climate, it didn’t take long for fears about vaping spreading COVID-19 to begin circulating. And on February 7, a new study on the transmission of the virus hit the headlines that seemed to prove what many had thought all along.

Take this example from The Telegraph: “Vapers with COVID-19 are up to 20% more likely to transmit it than infected non-smok ers, study finds.”

Or this from Mail Online: “Vapers up to 17% more likely to spread coronavirus because it gets blown around when they breathe out.”

78 VM32

The only problem is that the findings of the study were not accurately summed up by these headlines.

The study used a mathematical model to calculate the risk of aerial transmission of COVID-19 and other pathogens through droplets exhaled in e-cigarette vapour.

The researchers said that 90 percent of vapers use low-powered devices such as pods and AIOs. If a user of a low-power de vice with COVID was to vape in an indoor setting, the model showed an increased risk of transmitting the coronavirus of just one percent more than simply breathing.

For the minority of high-intensity cloud-chasers using high powered mods, the risk increased by 5-17 percent.

Both the Mail and The Telegraph focused on this minority of users, without clarifying that the figure only related to a small sub set of users, while The Telegraph’s cited 20 percent risk increase did not even appear in the paper.

Study author Roberto Sussman tweeted: “Sloppy journalism spreads contagion pan ic thru infrequent “big clouds” when 90% of UK vapers use low powered devices (risk = 1%). No mention that contagion risk is 44% for speaking 6 minutes in 1 hour.”

The study concluded that vaping would “add only a minuscule additional risk” where people were breathing and talking in social ly-shared indoor spaces without wearing face coverings.

It said: “As far as protection against the vi rus is concerned, vaping in a home scenario or in social spaces does not require extra interventions besides those already recom mended for the general population.”

It’s also worth noting that the risk of trans mission can be further mitigated by con siderate vaping practices that most vapers and vape shops have been following for a year.

Avoiding blowing clouds in confined spaces around others is just a matter of politeness, pandemic or not.

The best thing vapers can do is to continue to vape responsibly and call out misinfor mation, whatever the sources.

E-cigarettes present a huge opportunity to reduce tobacco harm as we continue to fight this deadly pandemic. Let’s not allow the lies and half-truths get in the way.

VM32 79

FLAVOURS REALLY DO MATTER

Huge new Europe-wide survey says smokers rely on a variety of flavours to help them quit tobacco.

80 VM32

Vaping plays a key role in helping smokers quit, according to a new European survey of almost 30,000 people across 27 countries.

According to the Eurobarometer survey on attitudes towards tobacco and e-cigarettes, 57 percent of smokers used e-cigarettes to kick the habit.

Perception of harm was also a key factor, with 37 percent reporting that they were encouraged to switch to e-cigarettes because they believed vaping was less harmful.

Flavours were also shown to be a major factor in helping smokers quit tobacco and stay off cigarettes with one in five vapers saying they preferred flavours other than tobacco.

In terms of popularity, fruit flavours came out on top, with 48 percent of adults saying they preferred these.

One in five surveyed preferred candy flavours such as chocolate or vanilla while more exotic e-liquids including champagne and whisky were at the bottom of the popularity table.

Despite an increase in menthol bans - such as the one introduced in the UK in 2020 - there has been an eight percent increase in the use of menthol e-cigarettes since the 2017 survey.

When it came to age, the older respondents were more likely to prefer tobacco flavoured e-cigarettes while the youngest preferred fruit and menthol flavours.

Michael Landl, director of the World Vapers’ Alliance, tweeted: “Most adult vapers are using flavours: Banning flavours would ruin the experience and send many back to smoking. What we need is choice and variety!

“It is clear that the EU Commission needs to take their own research into account and #BackVapingBeatCancer. Proposals for higher taxes and flavour bans need to be dropped. Anything else would

be a disgrace.”

Other key facts from the survey included:

- 31 percent of smokers were able to quit due to the use of e-cigarettes and another 27 percent reduced the amount they smoked - double the numbers from three years ago.

- Almost nine out of ten (87 percent) of current smokers said they started with cigarettes, with only a mere two percent reporting that they tried vaping before they began smoking.

- Of those who had switched to vaping, some liked that you could vape where smoking was not allowed while others said they were encouraged by vaping friends.

- Less than one in ten said they were attracted to e-cigarettes for their ‘cool’ factor.

Greece topped the European league table of smokers with more than four out of ten people (42 percent) still hooked on cigarettes.

Bulgaria came in second with 38 percent and Croatia was third with 36 percent according to the survey which took place online between August 3 and September 19 last year and asked 28,229 people across 27 countries for their views on smoking and vaping. When it comes to smoking rates, Sweden recorded the lowest in Europe at seven percent and their use of snus – a reduced risk oral tobacco product - will have played a large part in that number.

In all but seven of the countries included, one in five people are smokers despite attempts to reduce these numbers with a series of campaigns and other measures. Since a similar survey was conducted in 2017 there was only a two percent decrease in the numbers of people who were recorded as ‘current smokers.’

The most frequently given reason for smokers starting vaping was to stop tobacco consumption.

YOU DON’T KNOW NICOTINE

Aaron Biebert’s new documentary is out now but whose side is it really on?

You Don’t Know Nicotine is Aaron Biebert’s second documentary on the subjects of smoking and vaping. The first, A Billion Lives, focused on smoking but this one puts nicotine itself under the spotlight and focuses on how it is costing us thousands of lives. The film challenges our assumptions that nicotine is bad per se by showing how little we actually know about the tobacco plant, it’s uses and the actual scientific benefits to it.

We are very seldom told that nicotine could potentially help with precursors to Alzheimer’s disease or those with mild memory loss. We are not encouraged to think of nicotine as a positive thing or something that can be taken as a medication or involved in medical studies.

Vaping is mentioned in the film from the outset with references to the ‘teen epidemic’ that dominated headlines last year but takes the view that despite the negative headlines, vaping is not the enemy. On teen vaping, Swedish psychologist Karl Fagerstrom says it has proved to be an enduring topic because people get emotional when talking about kids.

He said: “I’m afraid that there are people that find it so hard to see only one kid getting addicted to nicotine, so therefore they would deny e-cigarettes being on the market.

“On the other hand, you have thousands and maybe millions of adult smokers who are not close to dying yet, are aged 20 or 30 and could benefit from e-cigarettes.

“How many saved lives do you need to measure up to one addicted kid? This is more emotional than mathematic or scientific. It’s a superficial argument when you don’t see the whole spectrum of the problem.”

Biebert says we need to get more serious about how we consume nicotine and urges smokers to seriously consider harm reduction

alternatives such as snus and vaping. The team visited Sweden to discuss snus, where one-in-five young men use it as a smoking alternative.

It is a welcome relief to see a film balance the debate about vaping. Biebert does give some air time to the usual suspects when it comes to anti-vaping sentiment or lobbying. Although Stanton Glantz may not be too happy with his portrayal, the film introduces him as a ‘recognised leader’ and he is the first anti-tobacco voice to feature. While the film mentions his publications and qualifications, it fails to mention that Glantz has had papers withdrawn last year but it does get a subtle hint in that Glantz’s anti-tobacco theories may be viewed as outdated.

Glantz criticizes the UK’s Royal College of Physicians, which has

82 VM32
FEATURE

repeatedly stated that it believes while vaping is not totally risk-free, it is far less harmful than smoking tobacco.

At one point he says: “I don’t know if you know the whole science fiction movie, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, where people’s bodies got taken over by aliens. That’s how I look at England and e-cigarettes.”

The film plays a clip of Professor David Abrams, co-director of the Tobacco Research Lab, and someone who has dedicated his life to studying how to help smokers quit and stop teens from starting in the first place.

Abrams says: “It’s very hard to change one’s mind, when for 30 or 40 years, we’ve believed one set of facts and pride yourself in having made recommendations based on that and then you begin to see a big change.”

Although Abrams was originally anti-vaping, he has in recent years switched sides after coming to view vaping as a harm reduction alternative.

The scientific facts are presented alongside personal experience from vapers. YouTubers GrimmGreen and Matt Kelly tell their stories about how vaping helped them quit smoking.

Kelly told how he quit cigarettes after developing mouth cancer from smoking but returned to cigarettes after recovering from surgery. He later started vaping and credits this for helping him stay off cigarettes for seven years.

The film details funding provided to anti-tobacco groups such as Tobacco-Free Kids. Aaron points out that a percentage of their funding comes from politician Michael Bloomberg. “Bloomberg has donated over a billion dollars to anti-nicotine efforts. He also funds activities at the World Health Organization (WHO) which bans the media from their meetings about nicotine and applauds nations that prohibit safer nicotine products while keeping cigarettes on the shelves.”

Aaron also drew attention to Bloomberg’s potential ties to a new e-cigarette called Hale which is currently seeking approval from the US Food and Drug Administration although it is unclear what involvement he has had to the Hale device.

Overall, “You Don’t Know Nicotine” is on the side of the science which clearly shows vaping to be a less harmful alternative to cigarettes. It considers the arguments from both sides but supports access, education and transparency around nicotine. It also highlights that we need to get serious about what we don’t know nicotine otherwise we will fail to defeat smoking.

Few things are as emotional as nicotine.
In the four years since our last movie about smoking, things have gotten even more serious.

VAPE WITH PRIDE

While smoking rates appear to be on the decline, one group that has recorded higher than normal figures is the LGBT+ community.

It is estimated that around seven in ten LGBT+ people smoke, so what can be done to reduce these rates?

A three-year study of just under 8,000 adult smokers revealed that those who came out as bisexual were twice as likely in comparison to heterosexual participants to start smoking. It found that coming out as lesbian, gay or another non-straight identity did not mean a person was more likely to smoke.

Its authors say that it is less to do with a particular sexual identity but more to do with identifying, ‘critical periods of vulnerability’ such as the stress of coming out, entering the LGBT+ scene or dealing with stigma.

“This approach revealed disparities that would have otherwise been missed if we measured identity at one time point, or grouped all LGBT+ identities together,” said study leader Alyssa Harlow of Boston University.

The report suggested that future research should address the reasons why changing sexual identity is closely linked to smoking in order to tailor better smoking prevention programs for this community.

While bisexual rates are higher than any other part of the LGBT+ flag, there are also high numbers of gay or lesbian smokers too.

limited edition rainbow collections, the more the community have pushed back angrily. In response to this there are now alternative pride parades where advertising is banned completely. How can the idea of tobacco harm reduction be introduced into the community in a respectful way that still creates impact?

Former smoker Lucy, who turned to vaping to quit, said: “The vape community is huge these days and I think there’s not enough straightforward information from vape companies about switching from cigarettes to vaping.

“The nerdy side of vaping with mech mods, coil builds and RDAs really helped me focus on getting away from cigarettes and made me feel part of something. I think wanting that feeling of inclusion as an outsider made the vape community more attractive to me as an LGBT+ geek.

“The vape industry needs to get to Pride events, demonstrate that vaping isn’t intimidating and say to LGBT+ smokers “Hey, there’s outsiders here too - come and join us”. Maybe drop-in sessions on coil building or introductions to that side of it could be really beneficial.”

Rebecca, a drag queen from Leeds, says that drag performers, who are huge part of the gay scene, often feel added pressure from

performing. “Among us drag queens there is definitely a pressure when it comes to performing. Going outside can be a relief for that as well as smoking. It’s a social event.”

“It has a lot to do with stress and the need for a release,” she adds. “I think a lot of us have got issues with substance abuse, or problems with addiction in general. I think that comes from the way we are treated which increases the stress in our lives.”

She highlights that LGBT+ venues being nightlifefocused creates an issue. “The first time I went out I was so nervous and I was just chain smoking. I think a lot of LGBT+ people smoke because of that emphasis on nightlife. The smoking goes hand in hand and there needs to be more spaces that aren’t nightlife orientated.”

Lucy suggests that representation is key. “I’m apparently still a rarity in that I’m an LGBT female who built coils and did the whole Ohm’s law, cloud chaser stuff,” she says. “I still don’t see many people like me represented by vape companies, and I think that further adverts or spokespeople who identified as LGBT+ could trigger that subconscious thought of “Hey, they are a bit like me, let me check that out” and maybe drop the cigarettes for vaping.”

SMOKING SAILORS ARE TOLD: “PACKET IN”

Smoking aboard ships and submarines was banned this year and the Royal Navy says vaping will be outlawed next year.

Tobacco products are now prohibited on board Royal Navy vessels in an effort to make the British military smoke-free by 2022. While the first step of the plan only applies to chewing tobacco and combustible products, it will soon extend to less harmful alternatives such as e-cigarettes.

In addition to ships and submarines, the ban will also affect designated military sites, with commanding officers being responsible for enforcing the ban on visitors, civil servants and contractors alongside active servicepeople.

The policy also outlines that tobacco use is prohibited on vessels that are moored or out of service.

A spokesperson for the Royal Navy said: “Defence has committed to going smoke-free by the end of 2022 to enhance the health and wellbeing of our personnel.

“It is well known that smoking has a long-term negative effect on life expectancy, as well as short-term effects on health, significantly contributing to low aerobic fitness, flexibility, strength and musculoskeletal injury.”

Sites will offer dedicated areas for vapers, but officials stress this is a short-term measure to help smokers quit and they will eventually be removed.

The Royal Navy is keen to limit smoking-related illnesses and deaths amongst personnel, however they don’t currently monitor the

number of active smokers in service.

Under the new policy, recruits will be encouraged to quit smoking before enlisting, with recruitment documents highlighting that “smokers tend to be less physically fit and are more likely to suffer injuries and illness.”

There will also be an increase in education for active service people, with a heavy focus on tobacco harm reduction and safer alternatives to cigarettes.

“Anti-smoking campaigns ensure a coherent message around the benefits of not smoking on a personal and professional level,” said the spokesperson.

“Defence Medical Services will play a key role by ensuring that quality smoking cessation services continue to be available to Armed Forces personnel.”

Due to Government restraints and a potential conflict of interest, there are no plans to provide servicepeople with free or discounted vape devices, stressed the spokesperson.

“As a Government department we cannot be seen favouring any brands, therefore we are unable to work with individual companies unless contracted to do so.”

Anyone caught breaching the new restrictions could face severe penalties said the spokesperson, “Initially service and civilian personnel will be educated regarding the new policy and be given the

92 VM32

opportunity to extinguish or remove tobacco products.

“However, continued breaking of the new policy may result in a breach of local standing orders and could lead to disciplinary action through already established disciplinary processes.”

The Royal Navy – along with other military branches – has often been associated with smoking, a stereotype that grew from the distribution of duty-free cigarettes.

Up until 1991 active sailors were entitled to 300 cigarettes per month and could take up to 200 on leave in a scheme which became known amongst sailors as ‘fag stamps’.

Retired sailors recalled trading cigarettes or giving them away to family members in online Navy forums. However, not all of them approved of the ‘harmful’ smoking culture.

Ex-Navy Chief Admiral Lord West said: “Sailors used to leave at 40 and be dead by 50 because they were so hard-living.

“If you smoke 600 cigarettes a month and drink half a bottle of rum every three days, what do you expect?”

When diesel-powered submarines would dive for long periods, cigarettes were prohibited but occasionally, commanding officers would allow a ‘one all round’ so everyone could light up.

In comparison, the US Navy banned e-cigarettes in 2017 amid fears over battery safety in confined environments such as submarines and naval aircraft.

WHAT DOES JOE BIDEN’S ELECTION MEAN FOR VAPING?

The President has promised to ‘follow the science’.

Both Biden and vice president Kamala Harris have expressed their intention to ‘follow the science’ when enacting policy. This is theoretically good news for vaping which has, time and time again, been proven to be a less harmful alternative to smoking.

But US studies are often interpreted differently to those in the UK, one example being the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH). The findings from this research have been used to justify flavour bans on the back of a ‘youth vaping epidemic’ which most experts in the UK consider to be overblown.

It’s also important to mention that Biden will have benefitted from the funding of staunch anti-tobacco and vaping crusader, Michael Bloomberg.

American Vaping Association president Greg Conley previously told ECigIntelligence: “In the transactional nature of politics, one

way to thank a billionaire who hates vaping is to allow or encourage CTP [the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products] to take negative actions on vaping products.”

America’s vaping policy could be heavily informed by health secretary nominee, Xavier Becerra who was a surprising choice to run the US Health and Human Services (HHS) department.

Becerra, who would be America’s first Latino health secretary if confirmed, has very little in the way of healthcare experience, but as California’s Attorney General he expressed strong views about tobacco and vaping.

In December he defended California’s state-wide flavour ban following the filing of a referendum to have it overturned.

“Postponing enforcement of SB 793 would only serve to put our children’s health and safety at further risk. Tobacco companies

94 VM32
FEATURE

have tried and failed to bring this sort of case before and we believe they will fail again. We look forward to defending this important law in court.”

Becerra also led California’s 2019 lawsuit against Juul Labs, which alleged that the vape giant was marketing its products to underage users.

He said at the time: “We’ve worked too hard, committed our hardearned money for too long combatting harmful tobacco use to stand idly by as we now lose Californians to vaping and nicotine addiction.”

The health secretary also led a coalition of 43 attorneys general calling for video streaming services such as Netflix to restrict ‘tobacco’ imagery in streamed content.

Anti-tobacco and vaping organisations, such as Truth Initiative and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, believe that exposure to smoking and vaping imagery increase the likelihood of viewers, especially teens, taking up the habit.

IMPORT BAN CLOSES AUS NIC LOOPHOLE

Prescription now the only route for Australian vapers.

Australia’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic is the envy of much of the western world. There are under 29,000 cases at the time of writing and 909 deaths.

Compare that to the UK’s 4 million cases and 117,000 deaths and its clear to see that Australia’s strict lockdown, mass testing, border closures and sophisticated contract tracing have paid off.

But while Australia’s pandemic response is a lesson in world-leading public health, the same cannot be said of its approach to vaping.

From October 1, Australian vapers will require a doctor’s prescription in order to import nicotine e-liquid. Nicotine liquids are already illegal to purchase without a valid prescription in most of the country, but vapers have got around the law by purchasing from other countries.

Aussie’s half a million vapers will have no choice but to go via the pharmacy prescription route but

doctors remain reluctant to prescribe. The Therapeutic Goods Agency said in a statement: “Individuals attempting to import commercial quantities of nicotine e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine may be subject to importation and seizure of products and potential fines under existing regulation.”

Vapers will still be able to import vape devices from abroad after 28 Coalition MPs and senators signed a letter opposing the import ban.

Liberal senator, Hollie Hughes, said: “After the TGA and Hunt announcements, it’s clear they’ve listened, reversed position on the regulation, and that’s no longer on the table.

“We’ve gone from an attempt to restrict vaping to what is fundamentally the status quo [on personal importation] with a step to legalisation through a national prescription scheme.”

Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Agency (TGA) believes that there is only ‘limited’ evidence that

96 VM32
“This decision is a major missed health opportunity.”

vaping helps smokers quit and no evidence that vaping was less harmful than smoking.

The health ministry is also concerned about young people taking up vaping and smoking.

However, UK health and anti-smoking groups such as Public Health England (PHE) and Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) acknowledge that vaping is less harmful than smoking and can help smokers quit tobacco.

Brett Barclay of the Australasian Association of Convenience Stores (AACS) said that the TGA’s ruling showed how out-of-step Australia is with vaping.

He said: “Progressive nations around the world have regulated the legal sale of these products and are enjoying the health and economic benefits.

“This decision is a major missed health opportunity. People looking for a safer alternative to smoking should be able to purchase safer products through responsible retailing channels. Instead, Australians are prevented from conveniently accessing such products.”

Australia has some of the most prohibitive anti-smoking policies in the world, including some of the highest tobacco taxes.

A pack of 20 cigarettes now costs an average of £19 following a 12.5 percent hike in September last year. However, the country remains very hostile towards vaping, which it has historically tied to Big Tobacco, rather than considering it an industry disruptor.

Along with the vaping curbs, health minister Greg Hunt revealed that the government would outlay at least AUS$1million on a stop smoking campaign, as well as develop a nationwide smoking cessation plan from April this year.

NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK

How do you sort out the wheat from the chaff when searching the internet for valuable vape-related content?

FEATURE

The internet is full of information on just about any subject you may care to choose and vaping is no exception. A search for ‘vaping information’ brings up 31 million hits, ‘vape facts’ will give you 35 million results and ‘vaping help’ fetches 67 million returns.

However, just because something is posted online does not necessarily mean that it is either accurate or helpful. Just cast your minds back to the recent American EVALI lung injury moral panic, which began in 2019 and was hardly out of the news last year, for the perfect example of disinformation about vaping.

Even though the cause of the EVALI lung injuries and deaths was traced back to the addition of vitamin E acetate in illegal THC vape products, the wider vape community has been tarred with the EVALI brush.

The many special interest groups which exist to discredit e-cigarettes still point to this as ‘evidence’ that vaping is harmful and potentially deadly. Furthermore, these anti-vape advocates are more than happy to allow people to continue smoking, despite the fact that tobacco kills eight million people per year.

There can be no better way of getting the very best vaping information than visiting your local specialist vape store (if you are lucky enough to have one), although at the time of writing they have all been closed here in the UK as we enter our third national lockdown due to the coronavirus crisis.

Where face-to-face interaction is not possible, the internet can be a useful source of information - if you know where to look. In recent months, many of the big vaping companies have devoted a lot of resources into their online presence, which has created a useful source of information.

Naturally the vapouround.co.uk website is a great resource for you too. Not only will you be able to access back issues of Vapouround Magazine on our website, but our blog is full of valuable and unbiased information.

Now British and American Tobacco (BAT) has launched its own digital vaping platform – VapeExplained.com – which promises to give accurate answers to the industry’s most pressing questions.

The site aims to help adult smokers and vapers avoid false, skewed and biased data by providing a one-stop hub of

Smokers

relevant information.

A company spokesperson said: “To find answers about vaping, smokers and vapers are increasingly turning to the internet. In 2020, there were more than 700,000 monthly internet searches for questions about vaping in the US and UK alone. Of these, approximately 70,000 searches specifically ask about the dangers of vaping.

“The site launches at a time when smokers and vapers face increasing challenges to find clear and balanced information regarding vaping.”

VapeExplained.com monitors online trends and consumer-driven search terms to identify the most popular queries related to vaping.

It then employs the expertise of over 1,500 scientists and engineers, as well as the organisation’s own experiences within the international vaping sector, to offer reliable, fact-based guidance.

BAT remains steadfast in its position on smoking, stressing that “combustible cigarettes pose serious health risks.”

Instead, the group encourages nonsmokers to avoid starting and smokers to switch to “scientifically substantiated, reduced-risk alternatives.”

Chief Marketing Officer Kingsley Wheaton said: “BAT is committed to building A Better Tomorrow by reducing the health impact of our business. To achieve this ambition, we must ensure adult consumers have access to the facts about the potentially reduced-risk alternatives available to them.”

The site is live in the UK and the USA and will roll-out to other countries in 2021.

and vapers face increasing challenges to find clear and balanced information regarding vaping.

‘Incomprehensible and deadly’

Members of the vaping industry in the Netherlands have voiced concern at the legislative bid to ban non-tobacco flavours in e-cigarettes from the start of next year. Some have accused the Dutch government of proposing counterproductive and dangerous regulations for tobacco-alternative products.

A public consultation by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport asked target groups what they thought of the draft regulation, who they thought would be most affected by it, and how new regulations would affect the industry.

Most objections to the proposal came from vape-store owners across the country, who believe e-cigarettes are an effective tool for quitting smoking.

“As a vaper and vape store owner, I don’t think the plan to ban flavours is very smart,” said one shop owner in North Brabant.

Another store owner in the same province described the threat of a flavour ban as “incomprehensible” and said: “My customers benefit from all flavours except tobacco. Not being reminded of tobacco flavour has helped many people switch from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes.”

A third said: “Many of my customers have already indicated that if their flavour is no longer available, they will revert to normal cigarettes. Therefore, I expect this restriction to be a deadly choice.”

Most industry players who responded to the consultation, which closed last week, also warned about the negative financial impact and the inevitable emergence of an unregulated black market from which vapers will try to get their preferred products.

Jan Hein Van Erp, an e-liquid producer and wholesaler in the town of Rosmalen, said: “People will not accept it and will buy liquids online or from abroad.”

The Dutch trade association Esigbond recently delivered a 19,000-signature petition to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of parliament, in The Hague, against the adopting of any e-cigarette flavour ban.

About ECigIntelligence

It seems unlikely, however, that the call from the industry to change the approach to this new regulation will in any way alter the direction the government has taken on e-cigarettes.

There is sufficient political support both within the Tweede Kamer and outside it to maintain a hard line towards tobacco-alternative products.

Health minister Paul Blokhuis has outlined in a general administrative order, or AMvB, how the Dutch Tobacco Act (Tabaks- en rookwarenbesluit) will be amended to ban all undesirable additives in vaping products and strictly regulate their appearance.

“Many have already indicated that if their flavour is no longer available, they will revert to normal cigarettes…I expect this restriction to be a deadly choice.”

“The fact that e-cigarettes are less devastating to people’s health than normal cigarettes does not make these products any less lethal themselves,” Micha Stubenitsky of the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) told ECigIntelligence. “Attractive flavours are cynically used to target vulnerable young people and make e-cigarettes into gateway products.”

A recent research paper from the Trimbos Institute – an independent body focusing on mental health and addictions – said public health is best served by prohibiting all flavouring for e-cigarettes, with the exception of tobacco flavour.

What This Means: The recent collapse of the Dutch coalition government is unlikely to change the legislative path towards the ban on non-tobacco flavours for e-cigarettes. It remains to be seen, however, if a new government following the general election on 17th March will keep it as a top priority in the public health agenda.

Although the bill was expected to become law in the first months of 2021, the current pandemic has delayed the planned implementation date of the new rules to 1st January 2022.

MUSHROOM CLOUDS TO HELP SMOKERS QUIT?

Vaping psilocybin, the hallucinogen in magic mushrooms, could be a potential game-changer to help smokers stop…but the technology is not quite there yet.

Words: Caroline Barry

One thing is certain about the vape industry and that is its ability to adapt and change.

With devices so readily available and a greater public awareness of the sector, vaping has helped many millions of people to quit smoking.

Now could vaping be about to enter a whole new arena to help even more smokers quit?

Psilocybin, the hallucinogenic substance found in magic mushrooms, has recently been used to treat depression and mental health disorders. The US Food and Drug Administration has labelled it a ‘breakthrough drug’ for its power to combat depression.

A study from John Hopkins University tested the effect of psilocybin on smoking cessation. Researchers treated 15 smokers who consumed on average 19 cigarettes per day for 31 years. They found that psilocybin therapy had an 80 percent abstinence rate over six months in comparison to just 35 percent for the pharmaceutical option, Champix. Since then, more work has been done in this field and it looks likely that should this novel approach to smoking cessation be rolled out, then vaping would be the delivery system of choice.

The Conscious Fund invests in early stage ventures in psychedelic medicines across the globe. Founding partner, Henry Sant-Cassia is very optimistic about the huge potential in this field but says there are major differences between regular e-cigarettes and vaping psilocybin.

Henry said: “The most important thing to understand is the difference in potency between (regular) vaping and psilocybin. It’s the difference between low alcohol beer and pure ethanol in terms of strength.

“With mushrooms, you have to get a prescription and take it to the clinics that are just starting up. What isn’t likely to happen is that you can pop to a shop and buy your magic mushroom vape.”

Henry says the USA and Canada are likely to be the first major markets for this prospective new industry, but believes that it has worldwide potential as a new smoking cessation tool.

Oregon has already legalised psilocybin therapy, giving it the opportunity to regulate and commercialise therapy programs and create licensed facilities.

He added: “Vaping offers benefits over other delivery methods when it comes to developing a psilocybin treatment, as it allows it to get into the bloodstream quicker and bypasses some of the digestive processes that weaken the drugs.

“It is quite conceivable that vaping will be a delivery mechanism in the future. There are already a lot of companies working on this. “Vaping is the optimum way of ingesting this drug. It also offers advantages for dosage control. I think that what will happen is that we will get a vape-based delivery mechanism that digitally controls the dose because we need to get it right.

“You are so far ahead of the curve even covering this for the vaping market. A lot of what we are talking about now, you will start to see in two to three years’ time. The psychedelics market will be huge and most professional investors are saying that it will eventually be bigger than the cannabis industry globally. It will be in the region of a trillion dollars.”

HOW FAKE PRODUCTS CAUSE GENUINE CONCERNS

As counterfeit vaping products continue to pour into the market, it becomes increasingly vital for consumers to authenticate their devices.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but when it comes to e-cigarettes, counterfeit goods could spell serious trouble for users.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, in conjunction with the FDA, recently seized a shipment of fake vaping products at the Fort Worth Airport in Dallas.

Over 33,000 items valued at $720,000 were seized upon arrival from China, all of which were en route to various Texas counties.

The shipments included vaping goods that resembled Puff Bar products, a brand that has already received calls from the FDA to remove its flavoured disposable e-cigarettes from the market.

In a continued effort to intercept fake and potentially harmful e-cigarettes, customs officers and FDA agents have come together to sniff out goods that don’t meet US safety regulations.

“Many counterfeit, unapproved or unauthorized products are likely produced in unregulated facilities with unverified ingredients, posing a serious health concern to consumers,” said CBP Port Director Timothy Lemaux.

106 VM32
FEATURE

As a general rule, counterfeit products fall outside of consumer protection laws, with US Customs and Border Protection identifying upwards of 93,000 e-cigarettes that failed to meet federal regulations in 2020 alone.

“This seizure makes clear to tobacco product manufacturers, retailers and importers that the FDA is keeping a close watch on the marketplace and will hold accountable those companies that violate tobacco laws and regulations,” said director of the FDA’s Centre for Tobacco Products, Mitch Zeller, J.D.

Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of border patrol officers, the market for these fake products continues to grow. Deceptive sellers prey on the trust of unsuspecting vapers, peddling fake versions of well-known hardware in an illegal and dangerous practice.

“Protecting American consumers from illicit and especially harmful tobacco products, such as counterfeit…e-cigarettes, is of utmost importance,” said FDA Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs, Judy McMeekin.

Speaking in 2019, former acting FDA Commissioner Norman Sharpless insisted that officials don’t target individual vapers. However, he warned that if “someone is manufacturing or distributing illicit, adulterated vaping products that caused illness and death for personal profit, we would consider that to be a criminal act.”

Authenticating your hardware

Clones of trusted hardware and e-cigarettes now litter the market and though they look near identical, they rarely achieve the same standards as authentic brands.

To combat this, a growing number of reputable companies have introduced advanced security tactics to ensure their products aren’t tampered with or fully replicated.

One of the most popular strategies used by legitimate vaping brands is to assign each device a unique authentication code.

These codes are typically situated on the reverse of the packaging, safely tucked away behind a ‘scratch and check’ label.

Once revealed, they can be entered onto the respective website, informing users if the product is genuine.

What to do if you come across counterfeit goods

If you believe you’ve purchased counterfeit hardware in good faith, your first port of call should always be the product manufacturer –this rings especially true if it was bought online.

Typically, the place of purchase will be able to provide evidence that your hardware is legitimate.

Additionally, alerting companies to illicit activity that directly impacts their brand, allows them to warn other buyers, as well as introduce further preventative measures.

Regulations surrounding the purchase of counterfeit goods can be confusing – especially if they were bought from an online retailer - so familiarising yourself with local laws will give you a better understanding of your position.

In some cases, you may be able to get a refund for fake goods, however, misleading sellers aren’t usually willing to part with their ill-gotten cash.

VM32 107
“We will continue to take every opportunity to work with our partners at the FDA to intercept and seize products that threaten US consumers.”
“We will continue to investigate and remove from the marketplace products that pose a particular danger to the public health.”
“Many counterfeit, unapproved or unauthorized products are likely produced in unregulated facilities with unverified ingredients, posing a serious health concern to consumers.”

WHO TOLD: “STOP PEDDLING LIES”

Consumer Advocacy Groups are calling for the World Health Organization to follow the science and stop “lying” about the link between vaping and COVID.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is under fire after being accused of peddling a ‘dangerous lie’ about the link between COVID-19 and vaping. Advocates have once again expressed disappointment with the WHO following the latest in a long line of anti-vaping ‘propaganda’. Some groups are claiming the organization is deliberately preventing millions of smokers from accessing reduced harm alternatives “in its quest to rid the world of smoking.”

In a 103-page white paper, The Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) said: “The vaping/COVID link is the latest dangerous lie being spread by the WHO as part of its anti-smoking agenda.”

The plea comes after the WHO ignored the results of several international studies, instead opting to support the notion that vaping can lead to higher infection rates for COVID-19.

CAPHRA Executive Coordinator Nancy Loucas said: “For years, the WHO has created a steady stream of anti-vaping claims, which has had dire consequences for adult smokers looking to quit. “By going down this route, the WHO has chosen

to support deadly cigarette consumption over a healthier alternative and forced vaping into the waiting hands of the black market.”

Loucas stressed that the misinformation presented by the WHO guides government legislation, resulting in policymakers imposing draconian bans and restrictions on vapers.

Contrary to the WHO’s allegations, global medical research has revealed no connection between vaping and a higher likelihood of contracting the virus. CAPHRA have identified a number of key observations from studies around the world that dispute the WHO’s claims, including a low percentage of COVID-19 patients who also smoke.

Independent researchers have labelled the link between COVID-19 and vaping as inconclusive, calling for more studies to investigate the validity of the theory.

The WHO’s own findings also fail to establish a relationship between the two, with its ‘Smoking and COVID-19’ report – which reviewed over 30 studies – uncovering no evidence to support the position.

The report said: “There are currently no peerreviewed studies that have evaluated the risk of

108 VM32

FEATURE

infection among smokers. This research question requires welldesigned population-based studies that control for age and relevant underlying risk factors.

“There is no evidence about the relationship between e-cigarette use and COVID-19.”

CAPHRA maintains that, while there continues to be disagreement when interpreting the science, its “impossible to state the role of nicotine one way or the other.”

The group criticises the WHO’s decision to disregard their own science and continue spreading the message that “e-cigarette use may increase the risk of infection” across its online materials and medical briefs.

“If the World Health Organization and governments globally can be so reliant on the science around COVID-19, why won’t they take the same approach to the smoking pandemic that kills someone every 10 seconds?” CAPHRA asked in a press release.

“The response to COVID has been firmly rooted in science, however, there is a disconnect between the science and the regulatory frameworks being applied to the concept of Tobacco Harm Reduction. “This is to the detriment of the health and rights of not only smokers and consumers, but also of society as a whole, who

are being negatively impacted by the disconnect between science and policy.” *The Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) is “an alliance between tobacco harm reduction advocates and their respective organisations.” It aims to educate adult smokers about safer alternatives to cigarettes, as well as protect the rights of vapers to access cessation tools.

THE COST OF QUITTING

Ireland wants to encourage smokers to quit but stubbornly refuses to endorse vaping.

When we talk about money and smoking, it’s often in relation to the cost of cigarettes and how much we can save by giving up.

We seldom discuss the cost of quitting smoking in terms of devices, patches or pills but the upfront costs of quitting can be a factor in a person’s decision to stop.

Vaping is one of the more cost-effective ways of reducing nicotine intake or quitting and with devices on sale for as little as £20, upfront costs are not prohibitive.

Both the UK and Ireland offer similar ranges of stop-smoking alternatives but there are significant variations in cost.

For those looking to try the pharmaceutical route, the leading brand is Champix – prescription-only tablets, which would cost £27.45 for a three-box course of treatment on the NHS.

However, in Ireland there is no standard fee for the medication, meaning the price can vary dramatically depending on what you need and where you are.

When Vapouround phoned pharmacies in Ireland we were offered a three-box course of treatment for €300 (£266) in Dublin, €255 (£226) in Galway and £150 in Belfast. In addition, there is a €50-60 (£44-53) charge to visit a GP in Ireland.

When we queried the price, the pharmacists assured us that the cost made sense in relation to how much we would save by quitting smoking. Not one mentioned other options or vaping when we expressed concern about the upfront costs.

It’s not just the financial concerns facing smokers, but Champix has also been linked to depression and anxiety in the past although there are studies that contradict this.

110 VM32
FEATURE

Anne Marie Kiely from Cork, was prescribed Champix in 2006 and paid €450 (£400) for a course of treatment.

She said: “It was a huge amount to pay but against the overall price of cigarettes it seemed worth it at the time.

“Before I started the tablets, I was in good health physically and mentally. By the time I sought medical advice to come off them, I had lost three stone, my appetite was gone and I had to be prescribed anti-depressants and sleeping tablets.

“There was no such thing as vaping at the time, only the mini inhalers which were useless. I stayed off cigarettes for six months with Champix, but I couldn’t finish the prescription.

“I was exhausted, nauseous, depressed and anti-social. I almost lost my job because of them.”

Ireland has set the goal of reducing the amount of smokers to five percent by 2025 as part of the Tobacco Free Ireland Initiative. One in five Irish adults smoke daily and half of all Irish smokers will die from a tobacco-related disease.

Despite the government’s ambitions to drastically reduce smoking numbers, the Health Service Executive does not endorse vaping as an alternative to tobacco.

The HSE.ie website says: “E-cigarettes are still fairly new, so we don’t yet know how safe they are or if they help people stop smoking. Because of this, we don’t recommend e-cigarettes to help you quit smoking. We recommend using stop smoking medicines like nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and Champix.”

Dr Máirín Ryan from the Health Information and Quality Authority said: “Smoking is a major public health problem in Ireland. One in five deaths each year is due to tobacco smoke. There are approximately 820,000 smokers in Ireland, with half making at least one quit attempt each year. Yearly expenditure on smoking cessation activity is estimated to be over €40 million.”

Irish Vape Vendors Association spokesperson Declan Connolly says that IVVA were “disappointed that Department of Health in Ireland does not yet recommend vaping as a quit smoking tool, despite the fact that vaping is the most popular quit smoking method in Ireland and is provided at no additional cost to the state.”

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STOP SMOKING?

and how can VAPING help you stay SMOKE-FREE?

Around 14 percent of adults in the UK are unable or unwilling to stop smoking despite the well-known health risks. Tobacco is directly linked to 78,000 deaths each year from a number of severe illnesses including lung cancer and heart disease. Quitting smoking is tough and, for some people, it may feel that stopping is futile as the damage is already done. But you might be surprised at just how quickly your body will start feeling the benefits after you stop smoking.

One Day:

Two Days:

One of the first things you may consciously notice is the return of your sense of taste and smell. Food will start to taste more vivid as your taste buds are reawakened. Meanwhile, carbon monoxide will be eliminated and your lungs will begin to clear of mucus.

Your pulse rate will return to normal within just 20 minutes, according to NHS Smokefree. After 8 hours, oxygen levels will start to recover as carbon monoxide levels plummet.

1-3 Months:

Your lungs will begin to heal, improving their capacity by up to 10 percent and further reducing coughing and shortness of breath. Your circulation will also have improved considerably by now.

Three Days:

By this point, you may start to find that your breathing improves and your energy levels increase. Your nicotine levels will also be depleted, which can lead to nicotine withdrawal symptoms such as moodiness and irritability. This is why many people prefer to stop smoking with the aid of a vape. E-cigarettes allow you to gradually reduce your nicotine intake over time.

114 VM32
FEATURE

15 Years:

Your risk of a heart attack will be the same as someone who has never smoked tobacco.

One Year:

Your risk of heart disease will now roughly half that of a current smoker. The risk will continue to decline past this point.

10 Years:

Your risk of developing lung cancer drops to half that of a current smoker.

Where does vaping fit into all this?

If you want to stop smoking, there are plenty of options out there, from nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to hypnotherapy.

However, a number of recent studies have shown that e-cigarettes are much more successful than traditional NRT and keeping people from smoking, especially when used in conjunction with behavioural support.

A 2019 Queen Mary University (QMU) study found that smokers are twice as likely to successfully quit with e-cigarettes than with nicotine patches or gum.

The randomised controlled trial was the first of its kind to compare traditional nicotinereplacement therapy (NRT) with e-cigarettes, which are not licensed medicines.

All participants were also given behavioural support. By the end of the year, 18 percent of the e-cigarette users had successfully quit smoking, compared to 10 percent of the NRT group.

Also in 2019, a cross-sectional survey of almost 20,000 quit attempts revealed that vapers were 95 percent more likely to successfully quit smoking than those who went cold-turkey. Traditional nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT) such as patches and gums had a quit rate of just 34 percent.

NRT was only successful when prescribed, reinforcing the importance of stop-smoking support for this quit method. No wonder they are the most popular smokingcessation aid in the UK.

VM32 115

THE CONTINUUM OF RISK

Where does vaping fit in nicotine’s scale of harm?

The concept of harm reduction is well established in science and public health. It is built on the understanding that people will seek pleasure and engage in risky behaviour to experience it. Condoms lower the risk of infection and unwanted pregnancy while methadone allows opiate addicts to consume a drug that alleviates heroin withdrawal symptoms without having to use needles or engage with the black market.

However, tobacco harm reduction remains something of a taboo concept, thanks, in no small part, to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) refusal to engage with the ‘tobacco industry.’ This includes small, independent vape businesses that do not promote tobacco in any form.

In a guidance article issued in February 2020, the organisation wrote: “Nicotine is highly addictive and found in most e-cigarettes. Both tobacco products and e-cigarettes pose risks to health and the safest approach is not to consume either.”

However, nicotine sources exist on what the 2018 Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction report calls the ‘Continuum of Risk’. By considering the risks and potential benefits of different nicotine sources, consumers can make an informed decision about which could be the best one for them.

CIGARETTES

Cigarettes are by far the most harmful widely-available nicotine source, accounting for 78,000 UK deaths each year, according to NHS statistics. Cigarette-smoking causes cancer, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung disease and diabetes.

Cigarette smoke also presents a significant risk to others, particularly children. People who regularly breathe in others’ smoke are much more likely than non-smokers to develop the above health conditions. In the US, smoking accounts for more deaths every year than HIV, illegal drugs, alcohol, vehicle injuries and firearms combined, according to the CDC.

NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (NRT)

NRT is considered the least harmful way to consume nicotine. Nicotine patches, gums and sprays are a pharmaceutical treatment to help people quit smoking, rather than a lifestyle choice like e-cigarettes are for many people.

Different NRT products work in different ways. Patches slowly release some nicotine into the bloodstream, with some worn all the

116 VM32
FEATURE

time and others only at night. Sprays and gums take effect much more quickly so can be used to respond to cravings as they arrive. Many people use a combination or NRT products which they can cycle as required

Some people experience side effects with NRT. Patches can cause skin irritation while nasal sprays can irritate the nose, throat and eyes and many smokers report that NRT products are not effective to successfully get them to quit smoking.

E-CIGARETTES

While e-cigarettes are not a pharmaceutical product like NRT, they do work in much the same way for many people.

The variation in e-liquid nicotine levels allows users to gradually reduce their nicotine intake over time, which can help mitigate the withdrawal effect smokers often experience when going ‘cold turkey.’

A 2019 University College London (UCL) study found that e-cigarettes are three times more effective than NRTs at helping adults quit smoking.

Some vapers use e-cigarettes as a replacement for combustible tobacco, rather than a way to quit using nicotine altogether.

Public Health England, the Royal College of Physicians and Cancer

Research UK all back vaping as a less harmful alternative to smoking. Unlike tobacco smoke, e-cigarette vapor presents a minimal risk to bystanders, according to the latest evidence review from Public Health England. However, people with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma may be more susceptible to irritants in e-cigarette vapour than other people.

We also do not know what risk vape clouds present to bystanders in the COVID era. However, the risk is likely far lower than tobacco smoke which can increase the severity of COVID symptoms. Vapers can further mitigate the risk by vaping considerately.

TO CONCLUDE...

Whether you want to stop using nicotine altogether or switch to a less harmful product, there are many products out there that could be the answer. Each comes with its pros and cons. However, with its relative safety profile and demonstrable effectiveness at keeping people off cigarettes, vaping offers the most rounded solution.

VM32 117

SO YOU WANT TO SWITCH TO VAPING. WHAT NOW?

WE SET YOU ON THE PATH TO A SMOKE-FREE FUTURE

We have endured lockdowns of one form or another for about a year now and this has been difficult for us all. During this time many smokers took the opportunity to switch to vaping but many more are still apprehensive to take that first step. This guide was written to provide smokers with the information they need to make the switch?

118 VM32 I QUIT SMOKING WITH VAPE
FEATURE

There are three main sources for vape products: online stores, convenience stores/supermarkets and vape shops. Online stores offer the pros and cons you would normally associate with online shopping.

Pro: there is a huge range of products available at competitive prices. Con: You don’t get the personal touch of the in-store experience. When it comes to vaping, this can be crucial.

However, many online shops offer great customer service. A good online vape shop will have the expertise to help you find the best device for you.

Convenience stores and supermarkets provide an increasingly wide variety of vapes, e-liquids and peripheries at competitive prices. However, with a few exceptions, staff are rarely trained on how to advise customers on the most suitable products.

Vape shops are by far your best option. There’s a huge variety of products, from basic pod systems to more advanced devices and a massive selection of e-liquids to choose from. But the best thing about vape shops is the expertise. Many vape shop staff are former smokers with the experience to guide you on your journey to a smokefree life.

Starter kits come in many shapes and sizes these days. And your choice of device will depend on a number of factors, from price to availability to ease of use. However, a good place to start is with a pod system or all-in-one (AIO). Pod systems are simple, lightweight devices that contain either pre-filled or refillable e-liquid cartridges. With these vapes, there’s no need to worry about replacing the tank or battery and they are incredibly easy to use.

All-in-one (AIO) devices offer a little more flexibility than pods as you can use replacement coils (the heating element in a vape) rather than a disposable pod, should you so wish. You can also adjust the power output of the device to tailor to your vaping and flavour preferences.

Whether you use a cartridge-based pod device or an AIO, you’ll need the right e-liquid for the job.

Your first consideration should be nicotine. If you’re a heavy smoker, you will want a higher nicotine content to ensure than the transition to vaping is as smooth as possible. E-liquids are capped at 20mg/ml in the UK so many heavy smokers will start at the maximum level and then reduce their nicotine content over time.

Regulated e-liquids use two carriers, the first being propylene glycol (PG). PG is less viscous than VG and is often sought after for its ‘throat hit’. This is one aspect that smokers often neglect when they switch.

Vegetable glycerin (VG) is sweeter and thicker than PG and is also significantly smoother. One major downside of VG is that it tends to batter your coils, so that’s something to think about if cost is an issue.

Thankfully, many e-liquids are available in PG/VG ratios that give you the best of both worlds.

Freebase nicotine is the ‘default’ nicotine found in both e-liquids and cigarettes. It is extracted directly from the tobacco plant and can also be found in nicotinereplacement products, such as gums and patches.

Salt nicotine is the same as freebase nicotine but also includes benzoic acid. This addition makes salt nicotine e-liquid a much smoother vape, allowing you to consume higher nicotine e-liquids without a harsh throat hit.

So that’s the basics covered. If you have any questions let us know. Or, better still, pop into your local vape shop and ask a member of staff.

VAPING CAN IMPROVE HEALTH OF HOMELESS SMOKERS

A recent Irish study illuminates how free vaping products can have a positive impact on the health of homeless smokers.

When it comes to tobacco harm reduction, the homeless community is typically thrown on the back burner, resulting in alarmingly high smoking rates.

A recent Irish study examined the effect that access to free vaping products could have on homeless smokers.

Study organiser Florian Scheibein is well qualified in this area and has helped shape harm reduction policies with the Simon Community homeless charity.

Florian, who is also a Board Member of the Network of Early Career Professionals in Addiction, spoke to Vapouround about his work. He said: “We wanted a full spectrum, broad approach and one of the nurses mentioned tobacco in terms of a smoking ban. I thought a ban might be too extreme, but it made me think about tobacco harm reduction.”

When it comes to discussing tobacco harm reduction for this group, Florian highlights that health may not be a primary concern in light of the struggle for shelter or survival.

“For people who experience homelessness, health may not be the top priority, as you are dealing with trying to find a home, trying to survive, your

120 VM32

environment may be extremely stressful and walking around the place can be boring. “Then people often think, why focus on smoking when they are using heroin? Why not leave people to enjoy their cigarettes? Do we have to take everything away from them?

“A lot of these people do want to quit smoking but don’t have the support to do it.”

Florian said he would love to see vape shops try to figure out better ways of making the equipment more available, as this was such an important issue.

After consulting with the New Nicotine Alliance (NNA), Florian partnered with Tom Russell of UK vape store, Refill Station.

Alongside providing kits to the study at a reduced cost, Russell also offered his advice, discussing which models had the best user-interface and longest battery-life. They eventually settled on the Endure T22e, due in part to its inclusion on other drug use and harm reduction studies.

“If there are benefits from those studies then they could be combined together and the evidencebase could be strengthened,” said Florian.

The subjects were monitored for three months after receiving their vapes, with Florian recording a positive uptake amongst users.

He said: “A lot of people really appreciated the chance and their health improved considerably. However, there were some issues around stressful environments, including hospitalisation or deaths of partners.

“But a lot of people did really well on it.” Florian highlighted several ways that vape stores can support the homeless community, stressing that “there is a demand…on approaching the services directly and saying you would like to contribute.

“Could you have a discount, or a way for people to read more about it themselves?”

“Most services want to help their people, but tobacco harm reduction is not a top priority.”

Also in this issue, we investigate how the cost of Champix in Ireland can create a barrier for adult smokers looking to quit. This problem is only amplified for homeless people, who often struggle to maintain the costs of safer alternatives.

THEY’RE DEADLY SERIOUS ABOUT THIS

UKIP Wales wants to turn the clock back to when smoking was still legal in pubs

It’s strange to recall just how different life was before the smoking ban of 2007. Which is perhaps why it’s so jarring to see people smoking on screen in TV shows set in the smoke-cloaked past. Walk into a pub on any given evening and you’d be hit with a wall of smoke that would follow you back out the door and stick to you like an ashy shower curtain.

But now, UKIP Wales wants to bring that all back in the name of personal freedom.

UKIP Wales leader, Neil Hamilton, said: “UKIP believes in freedom of choice. Freedom not to drink in smoke-filled rooms but also freedom to smoke if others are not inconvenienced. That’s the free society we believe Wales should strive to be.

“Individuals should decide for themselves what risks they run in life - whether smoking, free-fall parachute jumping, or being bored to death by a Mark Drakeford speech.”

Hamilton made the comments in the run-up to the Welsh general election due to be held on May 6, Covid-permitting.

So what exactly is UKIP proposing?

Pubs would be allowed to create designated ‘smoking rooms’. These were a common sight in workplaces prior to the smoking ban, with branded ashtrays on tables between the yellow-tinged walls.

122 VM32
FEATURE

Landlords would have the freedom to declare their pub ‘all smoking’ if unable to accommodate a smoking room.

Proponents of reversing the smoking ban often cite the decline in pubs. However, increased duty on beer, the economic crash of 2008 and the growth of e-cigarettes will have all played their part.

Pubs have had to adapt by offering food and coffee, which many would argue has made them more welcoming than they were prior to the ban.

But while the smoking ban may have played a part in declining pub numbers, experts believe that it has had a positive impact on the nation’s health.

Hazel Cheeseman, director of policy at Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) said: “Directly after the legislation, more people were trying to quit smoking, and more people succeeded because it’s much easier to avoid those situations.”

British Medical Journal (BMJ) research estimates that there were 1,200 fewer hospital admissions from heart attacks the year after the ban thanks to improved air quality and fewer smokers.

In Scotland, hospital admissions from children with Asthma decreased by 18 percent per year in the three years after the ban after having increased by five percent per annum in previous years.

While it’s unlikely that UKIP’s proposal will go down well with voters, it could kickstart a long-overdue debate about vaping in pubs.

E-cigarettes are not covered by the smoking ban but many pubs ban them anyway.

Allowing people to vape discreetly would mean customers would spend more time in the pub and would not look intimidating gathered together in the entrance.

Landlords will need to make pubs as accommodating as possible if they are to survive when lockdown is finally lifted. But vapers will have to champion the cause and be considerate if vaping is to be part of the solution.

VAPING ASSOCIATION REQUESTS WITHDRAWAL OF ‘FLAWED’ E-CIGARETTE STUDY

An Italian vaping association, ANPVU, disputes two e-liquid studies presented at an online conference for respiratory health.

A vaping consumer group in Italy, the National Association for United Vapers (ANPVU) is calling for the withdrawal of a study by Duke’s Research Centre on the grounds that it is flawed and shows bias.

The two studies conducted by Duke and Yale University have claimed that flavours combine with solvents in e-cigarettes to produce toxic chemicals which lead to respiratory and cardiovascular problems. The results of the studies were presented

at the European Respiratory Society International Congress (ERS) which, due to COVID-19, took place online late last year.

Italy’s national vapers association, Associazione Nazionale per i Vapers Uniti (ANPVU) has highlighted the potential conflict of interest as Duke’s Research Centre is funded by tobacco multinationals and has a long-standing history of association with tobacco. They are arguing that the studies should be withdrawn as a result of this.

124 VM32
FEATURE

Duke’s University is a private research university located in Durham, North Carolina, in the US. They accepted multi-million dollar funding from Philip Morris in 2008 to establish the Duke Centre for Nicotine and Smoking Cessation Research, now the Duke Centre for Smoking Cessation. The company emphasises it does not have any control or influence in conducting research or publication. The university further acknowledges the funding on its website and it in journal papers.

Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, pharmacology and cancer biology at Duke University, Sven-Eric Jordt said: “Our co-author and analytical chemist Dr. Hanno Erythropel and colleagues at Yale University found new chemicals in e-liquids and revealed that they are formed when components are mixed by manufacturers. We became concerned about the high levels of these new compounds that had not been studied in the past and decided to conduct toxicological tests.”

The studies looked at how flavour compounds mix with the main solvents in e-cigarettes and what happens when the cells that line the bronchi were exposed to chemicals in flavours such as propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) which are the main solvents in e-cigarette liquids.

Jordt continued: “We consistently observed that the new chemicals formed from the flavours and e-liquid solvents were more toxic than either of their parent compounds.”

President of the ANPVU, Carmine Canino responded: “There are too many errors and manipulations in the scientific article reported by some Italian newspapers that reveal prejudice towards the electronic cigarette.

“The attention to consumer protection is such that just a few months ago, ETHRA and ANPVU were called upon to participate in the revision of the existing TPD directive in light of the latest scientific discoveries.”

While the papers have not been withdrawn, a spokesperson at ERS pointed out that the researchers declared a conflict of interest ahead of presenting the papers.

The spokesperson said: “The abstracts have not been withdrawn. ERS discussed the points raised by ANPVU with the authors of the abstracts and is satisfied with their responses. In addition, both authors completed and signed conflict of interest declarations when submitting their abstracts as is normal with any abstract submitted to the congress.”

VM - ISSUE 321202

As the second edition to the Smok Morph collection, the Morph 2 offers users a sturdy, robust solution to their vaping hardware needs.

The device is tactile, built for functionality, but infused with strong visual appeal. It comes in eight different colours, each fitting to a different aesthetic. Our review unit was a very business-like dark blue and black but other options include brown and gold, prism rainbow and a really eye-catching red and white. There is also a black carbon fibre version which is my personal favourite just on looks alone.

The device has a zinc alloy exterior and fine leather finish which grants the Morph 2 a much-desired comfortable and ergonomic feel.

However, what really sets this device apart from its predecessor is power. It can deliver variable wattage up to 230W and is powered by dual 18650 batteries.

The Morph 2 kit is bundled with a TFV-Mini V2 tank, which was previously included in the R-Kiss kit. It has the standard 510 connection and is crafted from premium stainless steel. Additionally, the TFV-Mini V2 has three airflow channels at the base of the tank, allowing users to select the airflow best suited to them.

Monitoring your airflow with this device is key, as I found that when set fully open, the large volume of air tends to dilute and compromise the e-liquid flavour.

You don’t really want to go anywhere past half-way open on this one if you appreciate bursting e-liquid flavours, but for those who like billowing clouds then the loss of flavour may be an acceptable compromise.

Users are also provided with a full temperature control mode that ranges between 200°F-600°F /100°C-315°C for a more customisable experience.

The Morph 2 is a very thirsty beast indeed and I was a little surprised at how quickly the coils drink juice. My bottle soon became an essential day-to-day item and I found myself almost constantly topping up my supply of e-liquid. This is especially important with the 2ml tank sizes in the UK and the EU, which means you really don’t want to leave the house with your e-liquid bottle with you.

- Dimensions – 47.5*31.7*88mm

- E-liquid capacity – 2ml (EU edition)

- Power output – 230W maximum

- Charging - Type C USB

- Weight – 133.5g

SMOK –MORPH 2 KIT SPECIFICATIONS:

One design aspect which really appealed to me was the lockable top-fill tank which requires a button on the side to be pushed before it can be opened. This eliminates the headache of your tank sliding open and filling your pockets with unwanted juice.

User interface is a key factor in making the SMOK Morph collection one to watch. The 0.96-inch display – which is powered by the same IQ-S chip as the original Morph - offers users all the information they could need, making it easy for even novices to understand.

To switch it on or off simply hit the fire button five times in rapid succession and hold the fire button down to use.

I also liked the protection feature, where there is an automatic cut out if the vaping time exceeds eight seconds. Other features include atomizer detection, low-battery warning and even password protection.

In terms of battery life, I found that when vaping at 80W, the Morph 2 provided day-long action. And when it came time to replenish the batteries, the charging time is fast thanks to the Type C USB port.

Included in the box is the TFV-Mini V2 tank, with a preinstalled S1 0.15Ohm single mesh coil, an A1 0.2Ohm dual coil, Type C USB cable and a user manual.

All in all, its a decent offering from SMOK, sturdy, reliable and more power than you’ll ever need, but with peace of mind that it will last most vapers a full day of vaping.

VAPORESSO FORZ TX80

Upon first inspection, the Vaporesso Forz TX80 boasts a similar aesthetic to other mods available on the market.

It seems this type of design has grown more popular in recent history, with a number of brands now incorporating the look into their own devices.

But the question is, how does the Vaporesso Forz TX80 stack up against the competition?

Above all else, the TX80 is a refined piece. Flaunting a robust, well-structured exterior, with precise contours granting the device an extra dimension of style.

It features a convenient, ergonomic design, complete with resilient rubber casing and premium leather grip.

The blend of durable materials means you can be sure the TX80 can take a few heavy hits and remain relatively unscathed.

Additionally, as per its IP67 rating, the device is dust and water-resistant. To test this, I left mine submerged in water for 20 minutes and it suffered no operational damage.

To further aid the water and dust resistance, the charge port is protected by a rubber plug that sits discreetly on the side of the device.

The fire button aligns with the 0.69-inch display, ideally positioned for hassle-free use.

Unfortunately, I found the battery cover thread awkward to screw on and off, but after a little effort I managed to fix the submarine-like hatch back into place.

However, the extra labour when opening the battery slot doesn’t go unrewarded, as it’s the high level of resistance offered by the screw-top design that keeps the device seaworthy…I mean secure.

The tank included in the kit is the Forz 25, which has a standard 510 connection and uses revolutionary new GTR coils. It also features a pre-installed 0.15-Ohm mesh coil (rated 60-80 watts) and a spare 0.4-Ohm mesh coil (rated 40-60 watts).

This allows a strong cloud production from the TX80, while also maintaining a high level of flavour. I found the results are best when the airflow is opened to around halfway.

I was also hugely impressed with the GTR coils, as the 0.15-

SPECIFICATIONS:

- E-liquid capacity – 2ml

- Power output – 80 watts maximum

- Charging – USB Type-C

Ohm coil I have been using for over a week is still performing as though it were day one.

The Forz 25 tank itself is encased in the soft rubber exterior, providing excellent protection for the glass and withstanding drops that would leave other devices shattered and broken.

Rather than feeling clumsy and awkward, my device feels safe, something they achieved without sacrificing the visual appeal of the device.

The top is a screw design which is easy to remove and replace. Plus, I’ve not had any instances of leakage so far, which is all too rare with tanks.

The Forz TX80 is jam-packed with features, including their new F(t) mode which can adjust your output whilst you’re vaping. Not to mention the usual Smart TC, DIY Mode, Pulse Mode, Power Eco, Voltage Mode, Temperature Control and Super Player Mode.

All in all, the Vaporesso Forz TX80 is a well-structured and intuitive device, giving you everything you would expect from such a staple of the industry.

With its tough rubber exterior finish, you won’t be getting any scratches or blemishes and with the same design concept on the Forz 25 tank, you can happily leave the spare glass packed away in the box.

VAPORESSO LUXE PM40

The Luxe PM40 is the latest pod system from Vaporesso. At first glance, you can’t help but be reminded of the excellent Smok Nord 2, so how does this measure up?

First of all, the build quality is superb. The blend of plastic panels with a zinc-alloy frame gives the device a lightweight, comfortable feel.

However, what’s most impressive is that this is done without sacrificing durability. When I was using the Luxe PM40 I always felt confident that it could survive a few falls.

The Luxe PM40 has very simple functions, with the whole system being controlled by the fire button – making it perfect for a novice vaper who doesn’t really need much in the way of complexity.

The black and white display screen is 0.69-inches, which is clear and easy to read and it’s powered by a built-in 1800 mAh battery – not too bad for a device of this size.

But the fast-charging USB-C port and high-quality charge cable included in the kit were the standout features of the PM40. I found it took as little as an hour to fully charge the device, which is a far cry from some other products on the market.

I have been vaping at around 15-18w and at this level the PM40 would easily last me a full day as my main vape. You can also pass through vape on this whilst charging, so you’ll rarely be caught without a battery.

As the name suggests, a maximum output of 40w is plenty powerful enough for this type of pod system, with a minimum of 5w. This power range works perfectly for both MTL and DL vaping and it’s all powered by the AXON chipset.

The real kicker for me with the Luxe PM40 is the presence of an external airflow control. The rear of the device has a sliding airflow adjuster.

All the way to the left and you can get a relatively tight, yet pretty decent MTL draw and all the way to the right and you

SPECIFICATIONS:

- Charging Type-C, 5V/Maximum 2A

- Battery capacity 1800mAh

can get a nice DL vape.

The Luxe PM40 also features ‘Turbo Boost Tech’ which maintains a constant output wattage, preventing the draw from getting weak. I found that was consistent until the battery dropped to around 10 to 15 percent.

The GTX coils provided offer great flavour and sufficient vapour production.

Supplied in the box are two coils, a GTX-2 0.6Ω mesh coil and a GTX-2 0.8Ω mesh coil, both of which offer great flavour and sufficient vapour production.

They also provide you with two cartridges, so you can carry a spare around with you and switch between flavours at will. The cartridge itself has a handy, clear appearance, making it easy to see how much juice you have left, even when it’s fitted and in use.

Refilling the mouthpiece is hugely convenient, as it simply snaps off the top and has a press-fill hole for liquid and can then snap back on.

Overall, I think Vaporesso have smashed it with the Luxe PM40. As mentioned at the start, it draws huge similarities to the Smok Nord 2, which is a fantastic device to be compared to, but with the addition of the adjustable airflow, Vaporesso has taken this device to the next level.

A TRULY SWAG POD MOD SWAG PX80 AXON Chip & External 18650 Battery Embedded IML Screen Quad Leakage Protection Adjustable Rotating Airflow GTX Platform Replaceable Coil Without Emptying POD

There are so many AIO’s out there, that when a new device is released, I am about as excited as a child unwrapping yet another a pair of socks on Christmas morning.

The Hita Ink is no unwanted Christmas present though and I found myself genuinely excited by this device.

It offers a 40 watt maximum output, 1500mAh internal battery, the option of an RBA deck and probably the best designs featured on a vape device in well…ever.

After having tried and loved Asvape’s first AIO venture, the original Hita device, I had high hopes and even higher expectations for this bigger and better sequel and I have not been disappointed. Put it this way it is now on my checklist of “must have” items including car keys and wallet whenever I leave the house.

The battery life breezes a full day’s worth of heavy vaping with no issues at all, and with the USB Type C charging, it is back to full power in just 90 minutes. I was highly impressed by the stock coils provided with this device. These are, by far, some of the best mesh coils on the market today. Flavour is perfect and they last longer than nearly any other coil I have tried recently. Included with the device are 1.0 Ohm and 0.3 Ohm coils and both stood the test of a chain vaper. Match that against the Reebox chip that sits inside this puppy and its just the perfect partnership.

The tanks themselves are also some of my favorite on the market, with easy to install coils and a nice, simple refilling design that doesn’t infuriate you to open when you have next to no fingernails. They have interchangeable 510 drip tips, lovely plug-and-play, no-fuss magnetic connection and they are tinted yellow... you just don’t get a cooler look than that. The only criticism I have, and it’s a small one, is that the air flow design sometimes can get covered up depending on how you hold the mod, especially if you have large hands.

ASVAPE HITA INK SPECIFICATIONS:

The device is incredibly simple to use, with all the standard features we have come to expect, including a puff counter and draw timer, which join the usual suspects on the beautiful OLED display that is clearly visible in all lighting situations. This is all paired with a stealthy and satisfying fire button and plus and minus buttons, to make it a joy to use.

We can’t talk about the Hita Ink without mentioning the unique - and completely badass - artwork based on ancient Chinese mythology that’s brandished across the device. There are four designs to choose from, as well as a stealthy plain black version. These are so good that I want to collect them all. If you are interested in learning more you can visit their website and get some background about each individual design.

Features like this this really make this device stand out and shine amongst a mundane sea of devices that all seem to merge together these days.

In conclusion I think this is the best AIO on the market and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you’ve been thinking about getting a new goto device

ELEGANCE POWER STEALTH

www.ukvapourbrands.co.uk

From first glance the VOOM Pro starter kit is reminiscent of cutting-edge Apple-like tech, with both the main device and included charging case sporting a sleek, contoured design. Even the packaging carried that high-end aesthetic, using a simple white and gold colour palette to decorate the durable, secure cardboard casing – this is a detail I really appreciate as it shows the brand cares about every aspect of the products it sells. Unlike some other products on the market, the VOOM Pro device and charger case are nicely sized, using an ergonomic design to fit perfectly in the palm of your hand. However, don’t be fooled by the delicate body of the device, as its crafted with highly-resistant, long-lasting materials – perfect for those clumsier users. This device is a closed pod system and is compatible with a wide range of flavoured pods. Some of the flavours included are: Ice Watermelon, Shisha Double Apple and Ice Strawberry. It also uses the convenient ‘click & go’ style approach, allowing you pop in the flavour pods and get straight to vaping - which makes the kit a great option for novice vapers who don’t know there way around a device. For those more experienced users, there are also refillable pods available, so you can continue vaping your favourite e-liquids. For me, being able to use my own e-liquids alongside the ones provided was a real bonus. It can often feel like the flexibility of pod systems is limited, however, the VOOM Pro has blown that myth out of the water. They are also fitted with an innovative VOOM tech ceramic coil, allowing you to truly enjoy the bold and full

Plus, for that extra piece of mind, the convenient case allows you to fully recharge your device in just 45-minutes, with one charge lasting an estimated three days (or one day of heavy usage). The charge-on-the-go style case features a 1200mAh battery, which can support up to four full-charges of the device. I fell in love with the VOOM Pro from the moment I first used it, a fondness that has only grown over the time. Even after heavy daily use, my device is still alive and kicking, far outliving some of the other pod systems I’ve tried. It draws wonderfully and I would recommend it to anyone making the move across from cigarettes. Even hardened mouth-to-lung vapers should be able to mix this in with their usual roster of products. The slightly metallic, smooth matte finish made it easy to fit in with my aesthetic, until it almost became an accessory as well as a high-end, smoking cessation tool. The whole experience for me was positive and I highly recommend it – I will certainly be keeping one of these handy in the future.

Dragon Fruit Whipped

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Dragon fruit has always been a favoured flavour of mine, so when this landed on my desk I was really excited to try this attempt from the guys at Komodo Vape.

The initial smell and taste of the liquid is rich and fruity with a creamy aftertaste, so this was a great start.

The vape is smooth and flavourful, with a beautiful fusion of fruit and cream. The fruity elements (also contains guava) are not overly sweet on the inhale, but carry a good strong hit of dragon fruit and a hint of the guava, which is finished off with a lovely subtle creamy exhale.

For me this is a great dragon fruit flavour which works really well with the cream. A must try for lovers of creamy fruit vapes.

Vanilla Blood Orange

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

As with the previous flavour, blood orange has been a favourite vape of mine for a long time, normally a sickly sweet flavour, but there’s just something about it that I love.

As soon as the lid comes off the bottle, you can smell the sweet sweet orange aroma with a big smack of creamy vanilla...not being too long after Christmas, this reminded me straight away of my overindulgence in a popular branded tub of chocolates, specifically my favourite ones, the orange creams. The vape is smooth, creamy and extremely rich, with a heavy hit of vanilla, but that all works really well for me.

This is unlikely to be an all-day vape for many people as a result of the richness, but it 100 percent delivers what it says on the bottle.

Blue Raspberry Prowl

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Blue Raspberry is a staple e-liquid, with most vapers having a favourite variation on the classic blend.

It’s generally fruity, fresh and bursting with flavour, however, Blue Raspberry Prowl just doesn’t quite hit the mark for me. It smells fantastic, but I think it’s just a little muted for my taste.

The level of sweetness is well balanced and the hit it’s nice and smooth, it just needs a few more drops of flavouring to really take it over the edge and make the blue raspberry pop.

Cactus Berry

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Cactus flavours aren’t normally a go to for me, as I’ve always found the idea of cactus as an e-liquid a bit strange…until now. I loved this flavour from the first taste to the last. Just the right level of sweetness and strength, plus a beautifully smooth exhale made it an absolute pleasure to vape.

What really carried this over the line for me was the fruity addition, with the strong hit of ripened berries providing just pure satisfaction.

I don’t think I could identify the taste of cactus, but I would have no trouble sniffing this one out.

Honeydewcumber

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

As soon as I opened this liquid, I was punched in nostrils with the scent of honeydew melon, which left me a little apprehensive to give it a try.

I’ve never really been a fan of honeydew, so subjectively, this flavour was always going to sit closer to the bottom of my list. Despite my personal preferences, the nostrils of people sat around me soon perked up when I gave this a hit.

I’m afraid this one isn’t for me, however, fans of honeydew are sure to enjoy this liquid.

Bomba Juice – Trident

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Much like the ancient weapon of Poseidon himself, this e-liquid was nothing short of a three-pronged flavour sensation for my tastebuds.

For me, the succulent pineapple led the charge, but was quickly followed by ripe mango and juicy berries to create a flawless blend of fruity goodness.

I have to say that the Trident e-liquid provides the best of both worlds, seamlessly combining sweet and tangy, subtle and fruity, refreshing and tantalising.

If bursting tropical flavour is your thing - and if not, why not?you should definitely consider adding this mouth-watering juice to your roster of e-liquids.

Bomba Juice – Hydra

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Taking inspiration from the immortal and iconic flavour of Vimto, the Bomba Juice Hydra flavour is one for the ages. This juice offers a nice sweet, fruity burst on the inhale and a cool menthol chill on the exhale, making for a refreshingly smooth day-to-day liquid.

Most importantly though, it provides a massive hit of nostalgia, taking me back to childhood memories of sneaking into the kitchen to help myself to a glass of my favourite drink. This juice will leave your thirst quenched and your taste buds tingling. Plus, the long-lasting aftertaste will keep you completely satisfied for much longer than your average flavour.

Bomba Juice – Zeus

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

The Bomba Juice Zeus flavour was definitely the standout blend for me. Afterall, it’s only fitting that one named after the king of gods would take the top spot.

I enjoy a good dessert blend, especially during these colder months and this juice has not failed to deliver.

The creamy custard flavourings, topped with sticky-sweet syrup and a subtle hint of pastry, come together to give me all the winter comfort I need.

All the sweetness hits you on the inhale, with the exhale providing the soft pastry and creamy base.

An absolute little banger of a juice, I think I will need a few more bottles to keep me going until summer.

Bomba Juice – Medusa

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Much like the Greek myths say, Medusa will stop you in your tracks. The only difference being that, rather than turn you into stone, she hits you with incredible flavour instead. This sweet grape vape is very similar to some of the old school grape juices, but the crisp, green apple flavour is much stronger with this one.

Sweet and refreshing, the dark grape flavours and touch of tang cut through a bland flavourless morning to transport you back to the summertime.

After every inhale of this juice, I felt like I was cruising down the seafront, blasting good music and taking in the sun.

Bomba Juice – Kraken

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Drippin Junkies truly did ‘Release the Kraken’ in this e-liquid, with the huge watermelon and pear flavour notes being reminiscent of the legendary seaborne beast.

Inspired by the flavours of Cyprus, this juice offers a beautifullycrafted watermelon and pear blend, satisfying my sweet tooth and whetting my appetite for something fruitier.

From the moment I cracked open the cap I knew I was in for a real treat, as the rest of the room came to a halt to take in the gorgeous smell.

I think I’ll have to keep this one safely tucked away.

Zombie Vapes - Mr Blue

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

The Mr Blue juice recipe is the Zombie Vapes equivalent to KFC’s eleven herbs and spices – super secret and unbelievably delicious. The juice has a flawless dark fruits infusion, utilising the flavour notes from a host of mixed berries to create the ultimate e-liquid for sweet-toothed vapers.

Not to mention the refreshing icy menthol blast on the exhale, which never fails to cleanse my palate and stimulate the tastebuds. Although there are similar blends available on the market, nothing I’ve tried holds a candle to this masterfully crafted, satisfying juice.

Zombie Vapes - Unicorn Blood

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Zombie Vape’s hugely popular Unicorn Blood juice is truly a magical concoction of mixed berries.

For me, the strawberry flavouring really stood above the rest, providing a rich and ripe base for the other taste notes to complement. But it was the background hints of red berry that took this e-liquid to the next level, as they brought an additional sweetness to the table that would have otherwise been lost.

I don’t often say this, but I could vape this all day long.

Zombie Vapes - Blood Sucker

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Sugary-sweet on the inhale and a subtle chill on the exhale, the Zombie Vapes Blood Sucker juice is a delightful cherry blend.

Offering all the classic tones of red berries, this e-liquid provides a lightly spiced flavour-base – reminiscent of those hardboiled Cherry Drops sweets.

I couldn’t help but be reminded of visits to my grandparents’ house, where I would be guaranteed a handful of sugary treats (and the occasional handful of change).

Overall, this juice has a very basic profile, striking the perfect balance between fruity goodness and a menthol kick.

Zombie Vapes - Zombie Blood

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

This e-liquid offers an unusual, but surprisingly pleasant, mix of flavours with blueberry at the core and pomegranate and aniseed added in for good measure. The thick, aromatic taste of aniseed pairs perfectly with its fruity counterparts, setting this juice apart from anything I’ve tried before. Plus, the addition of the pomegranate gives it a much-needed sweet and fruity kick.

If aniseed is your go to flavour, then this is head and shoulders above most other vape juices available on the market.

Zombie Vapes – Virus

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Don’t be scared away by the name, this is the good kind of virus, not the kind that keeps you trapped indoors. Another arctic blast style flavour from the team at Zombie Vapes, the Virus juice is a refreshingly cool combination of juicy lime and plump raspberries. The slight candy-like taste to this juice is really appealing to me, as I’ve always preferred e-liquids that can satisfy my sweet tooth. But to contrast this, the exhale is almost pure fruit. I will be keeping a bottle of this around, just in case I get a craving for something sugary.

Zombie Vapes – Antidote

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

If I could sum this juice up in one phrase, it’d be: ‘Nice and Icy’. So, if you like them cold this is the e-liquid for you.

A refreshing blast of sweet blueberries is a welcome change from the usual roster of taste notes and the sharp cut of fresh limes really make this a juice to get your hands on.

It seems the minds at Zombie Vapes have captured the essence of a summer day, bringing together subtle and sweet to recreate your favourite sun-kissed memories. This really is the ‘Antidote’ to those familiar winter blues.

Ice Menthol

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

If you’re searching for an e-liquid to wake you up and get you energised, look no further than Vaponaire’s Ice Menthol. This is an e-liquid for those who want to shake off the dust, limber up and prepare for the day because the invigorating and refreshing chill of this juice is sure to get you going.

Plus, it gives your system a cool icy menthol blast, cleansing your palate and helping you focus on the task at hand – perfect for when you want to take your vaping back to basics.

I’ll be sure to keep a few of these in reserves for those slowstarting Monday mornings..

Japonism – A1 Passion Fruit

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

If the lockdowns have taught me anything, it’s how much I love unwinding on a lounger with a soft ocean breeze and cocktails on tap. But with international flights out of the question, I’ve had to find other ways to enjoy the sun.

This e-liquid transports me to a sun-drenched beach almost instantly, with the juicy passion fruit flavour quenching my thirst and leaving my tastebuds singing with fruity joy.

I’ll be sure to get my hands on another few bottles of this ‘slice of paradise’ and I recommend you do too.

Chestnut Cake

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Made for all you cake lovers, there’s nothing quite like this indulgent chestnut delight. For me, it felt like I was sitting in a quaint bistro, coffee in hand, enjoying a mid-spring breeze and good company.

The creamy notes of this juice carry through the scent, with the earthy aroma of chestnut being infused in every cloud.

I couldn’t recommend this one enough to people who favour dessert-based e-liquids, as the savoury notes make for a lovely cakey treat. I’ll have three more slices please.

Sweet Pear

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

I’ve heard that Japanese pears are the sweetest in the world and if this little number is anything to go by, then I’d say that I onehundred percent agree.

In contrast to their western counterparts, Asian pears are ripened fully on the tree, allowing them to retain that sweet, tarty flavour and apple-like crispiness.

That same crisp texture carries through into this e-liquid, with every inhale offering full, bold flavour. Plus, the succulent juiciness of the fruit doesn’t get lost in transit.

All in all, this mouth-watering, subtle juice is a must try for vapers with an oriental palate.

Japonism – A2 Cool Lime

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Don’t let the name deceive you, this juice isn’t icy and isn’t topped up with any mint flavourings. Instead, it’s perfectly crafted to give you that refreshing lime-infused taste.

Cool citrus juices have always been an awkward one for me – sort of a love them or hate them situation – but with the Japonism

Cool Lime e-liquid, I was in heaven.

Subtly sweet and certainly not too sour, this juice will rehydrate you, replenishing your palate and leaving you wanting more.

Shock – Rainbow Sweets

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

Are you someone who can never decide which flavour to have? If so, this Juice N Power shortfill has got you covered.

When they brewed the Shock Rainbow Sweets e-liquid no palate went untouched, with a huge concoction of fruity flavours being thrown into the mix.

At first, I was worried the expansive blend of flavours would be overbearing. But to my surprise, they all come together to give this liquid a strong candy vibe.

Sugary and sublime on the inhale – and with hints of strawberry, orange and a host of fruity goodness - it shocked my tastebuds back to life.

Tropical Fruit

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

The Juice N Power Tropical Fruit shortfill transports me to a sunsoaked Caribbean beach. Visions of me, laying back, cocktail in hand and ocean straight-ahead hit me every time I take a hit of this flavour. It offers an elegantly balanced combination of tropical fruits, none of which are overshadowed by the others. Instead, the blend of exotic flavours come together to create a sweet and ripe-tasting inhale. As far as tropical fruit juices go, this one takes the biscuit, providing all the vibes of summer that make cold, winter days just that bit more pleasant.

Middle East Sour Cherry

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

It’s not often you come across a cherry flavoured e-liquid that isn’t saturated with menthol, but Juice N Power’s Middle East Sour Cherry juice is an exception to the status quo.

The pure, exotic cherry flavour – with a touch of added spice to shake things up - is consistently sweet from the first inhale to the last exhale, a rare find in fruity liquids.

As a fresh take on the classic berry flavour, this nifty little shortfill is ideal for fruit lovers who are looking for a refreshing day-to-day liquid.

Watermelon Candy Gummies

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

As a huge fan of anything and everything melon, my mouth was watering before I even opened the cap. I had massive expectations for this liquid and once again Juice N Power delivered. The succulent, juicy, ripe watermelon mixes seamlessly the with sweet, sugary, gummies – which is possibly a match made in heaven.

It’s much more subtle than I anticipated, but that isn’t cause for complaint. In fact, the focus on refining the sugary sensation added an extra dimension to this already top-notch flavour. Very different from your run of the mill melon vapes, the Watermelon Candy Gummies juice provides a full and authentic flavour, keeping any tangy fruit-lover satisfied all day long.

Strawberry and Lemonade Berry

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

I think Juice N Power hit the nail on the head with this flavour. Afterall, who isn’t tempted by a nice refreshing glass of pink lemonade? As a vape juice the Strawberry and Lemonade Berry ticks every box for me, with the fusion of ripened strawberries and zesty lemonade coming together to provide and smooth and cool throat hit. Oftentimes, a flavour combination as complex as this can fall apart and one ingredient overpowers the rest, but time and time again Juice N Power seem to find the perfect blend. I will definitely be stocking up on this one.

Vimtonic

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

This bittersweet blend of berries makes for a near-perfect replica of the classic UK beverage, giving me flashbacks to a time when I would raid the cupboards late at night for a fruity treat.

I say ‘near-perfect’ because Juice N Power’s rendition of the iconic flavour is slightly fruitier than the original. As someone who enjoys the flavour of dark fruits and knows what makes a good fruit vape, you’ll hear no complaints from me about this particular flavour profile.

With the Vimtonic shortfill, you’ll get a gorgeous blend of familiar taste notes, delightfully reminiscent of your favourite berry beverage.

Major Flavour Reloaded – Berriez

VG/PG Ratio: 70/30

If you have an insatiable sweet-tooth and an eye for all things berry, then this member of the Major Flavour Reloaded line is the one for you.

Brimming with fruity goodness and sugary tang, the Berriez flavour throws me back to a time of summer vaping, with no worries and certainly no lockdown.

The assortment of syrupy strawberry and blueberry bonbons gives the liquid a soft hit and a smooth exhale.

Plus, the mouth-watering blend makes it perfect for day-long vaping, putting a smile on my face, even on those long-haul commutes and drab Monday mornings.

Major Flavour Salt Nic – Chapple

VG/PG Ratio: 50/50

The iconic taste of the Major Flavour Chapple e-liquid isn’t lost on this handy little salt-nic, which came as a pleasant surprise to me when I first took my first taste.

All the core flavour profiles are combined in perfect harmony, with the sour cherry blending seamlessly with the subtle hints of juicy red apple to form the ideal day-to-day juice.

Smooth on the inhale, soft on the exhale and flavoursome throughout, the Major Flavour Chapple is a flawless combination of sweet and sour that teases the tastebuds and leaves your mouth watering.

Major Flavour Salt Nic - Beetle Juice

Fruit salads are one of my all-time favourite sweets, which is why the Major Flavour Beetle Juice holds such a special place in my collection of liquids.

From the moment I took my first inhale, I was swept back to an easier time, when I would run to the local store, change in hand, to pick up a bag of treats.

Not only does the Beetle Juice salt deliver of the nostalgic sugary, sweet flavour of fruit salads, but it also packs a seriously fruity punch on the inhale.

When I was using this, I truly felt like a kid let loose in a candy store.

Major Flavour Salt Nic – Tropic Ice

VG/PG Ratio: 50/50

This beverage-based juice is reminiscent of a tropical punch drink, with a cool refreshing, icy twist to boot.

The second I tasted it, I felt like I was unwinding on a sun lounger, sipping on a Pina Colada and taking in some rays.

The icy-blast chaser reaches your tastebuds at just the right moment, giving your palate a much-needed refresher.

With hints of pineapple and peach, the Major Flavour Tropic Ice salt-nic is perfect for summer-loving vapers who are in desperate need of some serious TIC (Time in the Sun).

Major Flavour Salt Nic – Blue Fusion

VG/PG Ratio: 50/50

Packed with a bursting blueberry and raspberry combination, the Major Flavour Blue Fusion salt-nic is a must have in every vaper’s arsenal of e-liquids.

I wasn’t prepared for the sheer fruity sweetness of this salt when I first cracked open the cap, but was soon enjoying wave after wave of limitless berry-goodness.

The high-quality ingredients used are really what make this flavour stand out above the rest, with the succulent dark fruit refreshing my palate for much longer than your run of the mill salt.

The label really doesn’t lie when it says ‘major’ flavour.

Major Flavour Salt Nic – Peach Berry

VG/PG Ratio: 50/50

Take the plumpest, juiciest strawberries and the most fragrant, ripe peach you can find, mix them up, add a dash of salt nicotine and you’ve got yourself the Major Flavour Peach Berry salt-nic. This is a choice flavour for any fruity connoisseur looking to expand their taste-horizon and take a leap into more adventurous salts.

However, what really took this one to the next level for me was the subtlety of the flavour. People can often get the sweetness of peach wrong, but this blend isn’t too potent or hollow, hitting me right on every inhale.

Strawberry Laces

As a youngster my go to sweet was exclusively strawberry laces. Now every time I see this flavour profile in an e-liquid, it instantly takes me back to simpler times and fond memories of days gone by. I have to say that Zeus have hit that proverbial nostalgic nail on the head with this recipe. The sweet strawberry is mouthwatering on both the inhale and exhale with the addition of addictive sugary undertones.

This is a perfect all day vape and with it being a 30ml bottle of concentrate (mixed at 15 percent recommended on the bottle so no need to bust out the old abacus to calculate,) I can mix up 200ml of this nectar. This makes me happy because it hits the spot time and time again.

Lemon Tart

There are few pleasures in this world that make you truly appreciate the little things such as rainy Sundays, a good strong stilton, fresh bedding and lemon tart flavored e-liquid. So it’s safe to say that I’ve tried a lot of them and I am somewhat of a connoisseur when it comes to the lemon tart flavour profile. After mixing and steeping for a few days, I sat down to drip and I must say I was not disappointed. This gives a perfect sweet lemon on the inhale, and combined with buttery crumbly biscuit undertones mixed with a rich creamy meringue, it is another winner for me. This is the perfect afternoon vape when paired with a cuppa.

Blackcurrant and Orange

As a keen fisherman, I’m no stranger to the expression hook, line and sinker, and this is exactly how I felt about this offering from the e-juice gods at Zeus. This is a flavour mix that you don’t come across everyday, but I think people have been missing a trick! The sweet orange complements the deep blackcurrant perfectly and adds a simple, yet dynamic, vape that keep you wanting more and conjures up summer vibes that seem like a far-off distant memory in this day and age.

Wild Berry Menthol

Wild berry is an iconic flavour which seems to have gone the same way of that classic word “haberdashery” – once on everyone’s lips but now hardly ever spoken about very much.

However it is time that we give the mixed berry menthol flavour e-liquids the recognition they deserve. Why are we not still talking about how good they are is beyond me. It is a bold, moreish classic profile and I am pleased to see it in this line up.

Zeus has found a perfect balance with their menthol and ice juices in this DIY offering. When mixed at the recommended level they gift you the perfect burst of full-bodied flavour you would come to expect from these guys. Here the medley of berries is sweet with an undertone of tartness that hits the satisfaction buzzer in my brain. For a DIY concentrate range I am really blown away again with Zeus and way they take bold, simple flavour profiles to that almost GOAT level. For any vaper looking to get into mixing their own e-liquid, this range is a must for the home vape lab.

Blue Raspberry Ice

When it comes to trying blue raspberry e-liquids I am reminded of the classic Clint Eastwood line in the 1971 box office smash hit Dirty Harry and ask myself: “Do I feel lucky?” I ask myself this because this flavour is very common, but is not always done well. However I can report that in this case I was indeed lucky. I think you can tell a lot about a juice company by their take on this classic and Zeus haven’t disappointed here. This e-liquid hits you with a big bold blue raspberry flavour accompanied by an icy chill which is both satisfying and refreshing. A sure-fire home run in my book.

Lulo and Citrus

VG/PG Ratio: 50/50

This nic-salt takes inspiration from the lulo fruit, a Southern American citrus delight, which provides rich, sweet tang to an already flavoursome e-liquid.

By utilizing a blend of tropical fruits, it offers sharp and zingy notes, perfect for those who have a penchant for something more exotic. The tart-like flavour provides a fresh and succulent inhale, with the bold citrus taste staying strong throughout.

If they were trying to replicate the feeling of relaxing on a sunsoaked, white-sand beach, then they hit the nail on the head with this one. All I can say after vaping this is goodbye winter and roll-on summer.

Strawberry and Curuba

VG/PG Ratio: 50/50

By George I think they’ve got it! The Just Juice team have created yet another fantastic blend of two perfectly balanced flavours. Strictly speaking the Curuba fruit is a berry, but in terms of this nic-salt, it is a delightful source of tang and sweetness. Mixing in strawberry was a genius move, as the ripe and familiar flavour really levels this juice out and gives it a smooth, fruity inhale. The Strawberry and Curuba blend is definitely one to try, as they have created a truly unique flavour. These guys may well be the exotic fruit masters.

Guanabana & Lime on Ice

VG/PG Ratio: 50/50

Step into a world of sun, sea and relaxation with this little banger from the Exotic Fruits range. I was unsure about this one at first, as banana is such a hard flavour to perfect – often tasting chalky and bland. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this one, with the Just Juice team once again producing a knockout blend.

When you add pineapple and cream to the mix, it creates the perfect balance with the banana-base and takes this e-liquid to another level. The real highlight for me was the hint of lime, which blasted my tastebuds with citrusy-goodness and left my mouth watering.

Cherimoya, Grapefruit and Berries

VG/PG Ratio: 50/50

Known as the custard apple, the Cherimoya is a creamy, yet refreshing fruit and that really comes across in this juice. Throw that in the blender with grapefruit and a bunch of sweet berries and you have possibly got one of the sweetest, creamiest, juiciest e-liquids I’ve ever had the pleasure of vaping. This nicsalt has painstakingly cultivated a series of rare and exotic tastes to create an intoxicatingly unusual flavour combination. I will definitely be coming back to this one when I want to shake up my roster of e-liquids.
