JOURNALISTS

Welcome to issue 16 and our second edition of the year. We’re settling into spring as things are heating up on the calendar with a busy line up of events and an ever-expanding business.

In March we added two new shops to our growing collection of Vapouround Lounges – one in Draycott and another in Burton-Upon-Trent – bringing the fleet up to six.

This month we’re gearing up for what has become one of the industry’s most anticipated events, the Vaper Expo UK 2018, which takes place at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from Friday, May 4 - Sunday, May 6.

An integral part of the expo for us is the third annual Vapouround Awards, which will happen on the B2B day of the expo on Friday.

As the magazine has grown, so have the awards. Last year 450 people attended in celebration of the industry and its leading individuals and this year, we promise the event will be even bigger and better.

There’s another important aspect of the night and that’s charity. We will again be raising funds for a worthy cause at this year’s event.

To say we’re excited about this year’s expo doesn’t do it justice. Our muchloved casino will make a triumphant return as we’ve doubled it in size since October. We’ve even had the Vapouround Bus undergo a total revamp. All will be revealed as the bus will be in situ for the expo weekend so make sure to come and have a look. Keep an eye out for it on its country-wide travels this month – you can’t miss it!

Finally, on behalf of everyone at Vapouround I’d like to say thanks to those of you who voted in this year’s awards – both readers and industry professionals – you came out in your droves and we couldn’t do it without you.

SMOKING RATES AT HOSPITALS IN

IPSWICH AND COLCHESTER ARE WAY DOWN – ALL THANKS TO THE GROWING USE OF VAPING AREAS

Vaping is saving lives wherever it can be found, but despite never leaving the news cycle, we still haven’t seen vaping reach its full potential in a healthcare environment. This is especially perplexing in the UK, which stands as one of the more vape-friendly countries in the developed world, home to a competent and energised scene which has made big strides to promote the activity.

A wonderful development in the ongoing story of vaping in the UK comes to us courtesy of Ipswich and Colchester hospital sites, which have seen their smoking rates fall dramatically, aided by the introduction of some unique vaping-only sites.

This brilliant new development comes as the culmination of a long-term plan with some bumps in the road. The scheme was launched just over a year ago. On March 8 2017, the hospital group published a press release titled, “A breath of fresh air,” which introduced a smoking ban and laid out its plan for a change of attitudes about the activity.

It said, "We aim to promote and develop a culture between staff, patients and visitors in which smoking is seen as unacceptable and everyone respects this. Shifts in culture and behaviours can take time and will not be achieved simply by releasing policies and guidance. The required culture change will be achieved if everybody commits to tobacco-free becoming a reality and responds to situations when this does not happen as an opportunity to engage."

14 | VM16
NEWS

In an impressive practical step, the scheme also saw the replacement of all smoking points with vaping points.

“At Ipswich Hospital, Colchester General Hospital and Essex County Hospital smoking of tobacco products will not be allowed in the hospital or its grounds… Vaping, using e-cigarettes, will be allowed only in designated places in the hospital’s grounds.”

We’re four months into 2018 and already our calendars have been marked with some essential dates with National No Smoking Day on March 14 and World Health Day falling on April 7. It’s very encouraging to see the full one-two punch of smoking cessation at work, reducing combustible cigarette use and then replacing them with a viable, significantly less harmful alternative in a controlled environment which doesn’t clamp down on their use.

Officially, all the named sites had long ago gone smokefree, but Clare Edmondson, director of human resources at the hospital said this policy wasn’t being adequately enforced and made sure the necessary steps were taken to bring it to fruition. Now, over a year since its launch, after being met with the same uncertainty and hand-wringing that much pro-vaping initiatives face, the organisers can safely call it a success.

The merger of Colchester and Ipswich hospitals was announced last November. In this time, the newly merged entity has seen – according to Ms. Edmondson – a “huge reduction” in its smoking rates.

There are two encouraging paths this development can open-up for the vaping industry at large. The first is in recognising the power found in Public Health England’s evidence update, which is also covered in this issue. PHE’s update has reinforced the validity of the powerful “95% less harmful” statistic which has aided vape industry allies. The second is an encouraging display of positive results from pursuing closer ties between institutions of public health and the vape industry.

VAPERS SHARE THEIR STORIES ONLINE AND AT OUR VAPOUROUND STORES ON NATIONAL NO SMOKING DAY

The first National No Smoking Day took place on Ash Wednesday in 1984. At that time, around 40% of the population smoked. Since then, millions of successful quit attempts have been attributed to the campaign. In 2011 alone, 225,000 smokers in London and the south east managed to successfully quit smoking on No Smoking Day.

The UK’s smoking rate is at an all-time low of 15.8%. The only European country with a smaller proportion of daily smokers is Sweden, where tobacco consumers have largely switched to snus. While there are fewer smokers in the country than ever before, the fight to eradicate smoking is far from over. No Smoking Day continues to play a key role in raising awareness of the damage caused by cigarettes and the tobacco industry.

On March 14, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and northeastern tobacco-control program Fresh teamed up to promote No Smoking Day 2018. Former smokers were encouraged to share their quitting stories on social media with the #TellUsYourWay hashtag. Many people attributed their success to e-cigarettes and the support found in vape shops around the country.

These stories echoed the findings of a report published earlier this year, which found that vape shop staff provide effective behavioural support that has helped millions of smokers to quit. In response to the study, Martin Dockrell, tobacco control programme lead at PHE, said,

“Specialist vape shops have valuable expertise and product knowledge to offer smokers who want to quit with the help of an e-cigarette. We’ve seen some great examples of these retailers working in partnership with their local stop smoking service to offer smokers a wrap-around package, with tailored behavioural support and practical advice on choosing the right product and getting the best out of it.”

As an added incentive for people considering quitting on No Smoking Day, Vapouround’s lounges and stores offered smokers a free 10ml bottle of e-liquid with the purchase of any starter kit. Staff also handed out a NHS Smokefree informational wheel provided by Public Health England that broke down the savings and the health benefits quitting could have on their lives. Meanwhile, the social media team encouraged vapers to tag their smoking friends with a chance to win one of five starter kits and Lik salt-based nicotine e-liquids.

As many of the testimonies showed, there is no one-size-fitsall approach to successfully quitting smoking. Even those who have previously tried and failed to quit with e-cigarettes may have succeeded had they accessed the support available at vape lounges and stores. Without well-informed face-to-face advice, some vapers are at risk of slipping back into bad habits.

Carla is a regular customer at our flagship lounge in Derby city centre. She was in her 20s when she first started smoking.

NEWS

A video shared by Public Health England revealed that 58% of smokers attempted to quit cold-turkey, which is the least successful method. Instead, PHE recommends using e-cigarettes or traditional nicotinereplacement therapy such as patches and gum. The combination of smoking cessation aids and support from vape shops and stopsmoking services makes a successful quit attempt four times more likely.

As well as educating smokers on the resources available to them, some organisations used the opportunity to raise awareness of the wider harms associated with cigarette use. London Fire Brigade urged people to stop smoking and switch to vaping as figures revealed that 5,978 fires in London in the last five years were linked to smoking. E-cigarette-related fires are incredibly rare and easily avoidable. Dan Daly, assistant commissioner for fire safety at London Fire Brigade, said, “So many of these deaths and injuries could have been prevented either by stopping smoking or by switching to vaping. We would rather people didn’t smoke at all but if they do, vaping is a safer option. There is a common misconception that vapes are a fire risk, but the reality is they have caused a very small number of fires – normally because the device is broken or it’s being charged by a faulty charger. Smoking on the other hand is a killer.”

A lot has changed since the inaugural No Smoking Day 34 years ago, but cigarettes continue to account for around 96,000 deaths each year. Thanks to the likes of No Smoking Day, Stoptober and

I STARTED AS A WAY TO ALLEVIATE THE STRESS OF WORK. I TRIED TO QUIT A FEW TIMES AND MANAGED TO GO SMOKE-FREE FOR THREE MONTHS. BUT I WAS EVIL WITHOUT NICOTINE! THEN MY PARTNER GAVE UP TOBACCO AND STARTED VAPING. I DECIDED TO GIVE IT A TRY AND HAVEN’T LOOKED BACK SINCE.
thriving vaping industry, the scourge of smoking may soon be consigned to the past. VM16 | 19

TROUBLE ASIA IN THE LANGUAGE OF LAW

THE CRIMINALISATION OF VAPING IN SINGAPORE REVEALS HOW EASILY WORDS ARE TWISTED

Anti-tobacco legislation is hitting Asia hard and sadly, vape products have often been caught up in the fray. The latter end of 2017 and first few months of 2018 have seen an unpleasant mix of harsh crackdowns and restrictive legislation spreading throughout the continent.

As covered in our last issue, Taiwan is reaching the culmination of incremental legal reforms that could choke out its vape scene entirely – outlawing them without making explicit reference. In late January, a shocking development saw hundreds of independent vape shops throughout Malaysia raided by the police in an unannounced act of intimidation. This mirrored a similar operation which took place in 2015 and saw stocks of e-liquid containing nicotine seized.

Now the long arm of the law has effectively criminalised the Singaporean vape market, escalating a ban on the sale of vape products to the possession of products purchased before the ban.

Like many laws which have curbed the practice of vaping, it comes as an amendment to an existing law: in this case the Tobacco Act (TCASA). The previous version of the act prohibited the, “importation, distribution, sale or offer for sale” of vapour products. Now the Ministry of Health has upgraded the legislation to give no leeway to products purchased before its imposition, as the report encourages the public to, “discard any prohibited tobacco products that they currently have in their possession.”

Singapore’s crackdown has followed an all-too-familiar pattern of regulation failing to adequately distinguish between e-liquids and combustible tobacco. This move is also set apart by its linguistic tricks, which could provide a glimpse of how antivaping legislation will adapt in the future as business growth and favourable public opinion turns the tide.

Use of language in the form of false equivalence and innuendo has defined many an ill-conceived overreach, with

this faithfully following the pattern. The official press release from the Singaporean Ministry of Health has attempted to coin the phrase, “imitation tobacco products”, as a reference to every means of alternative nicotine delivery, from shisha to e-cigarettes.

“Examples of prohibited products under Section 15 of the TCASA include smokeless tobacco products, chewing tobacco and shisha.”

Regardless of your opinion on its justification, this is at least an example of consistent tobacco regulation. But the with Section 16, this performative gesture obsession reveals itself again: “…while Section 16 of the TCASA prohibits any device or article that resemble tobacco products. This includes vaporisers such as e-cigarettes, e-pipes, e-cigars and the like.”

The Singaporean Government have attempted to clarify their definition of “imitation tobacco” as being anything, “that resembles, or is designed to resemble, a tobacco product that is capable of being smoked; that may be used in such a way as to mimic the act of smoking; or the packaging of which resembles, or is designed to resemble, the packaging commonly associated with tobacco products.”

This is no light touch regulation with slap-on-the-wrist consequences either. Anyone caught in violation of the new law faces a fine, tourists included.

“Under the TCASA, any persons caught purchasing, in the possession of, or using emerging and imitation tobacco products, are liable for a fine not exceeding $2,000.” Offenders may also face up to a year in prison.

The minimum legal age for the consumption of tobacco is also going up from 18 to 19 in 2019, with plans to continue raising it by one year-per-year until 2021.

It’s grim news, but the fight is never over. Campaigners can begin by reclaiming the definitions of tobacco and vape products in clear, concise language.

Turmoil in Tennessee

padlocked in a sudden crackdown of products containing CBD. The venture was dubbed Operation Candy Crush and consisted of officers from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, Murfreesboro, Smyrna and La Vergne police departments. Officers working for the FBI, DEA and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) were also present, with all parties acting on a court order issued by Circuit Court Judge Royce Taylor. Controversy arose when it was revealed that these products were derived from hemp. Many products derived from hemp are legal for purchase and use in all 50 states. The subsequent press conference – held outside closed vape shop Vapesboro – descended into a farcical display and a perfect demonstration of what critics of excess vaping regulation have warned against. A flustered, visibly agitated group of police chiefs from the named departments took questions from bewildered reporters. Opening statements revealed that the initial evidence gathering efforts were prompted by concerns from local parents who worried that CBD-laced sweets – which it’s claimed

An attempted justification of these raids came via Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh, who described CBD as, “an illegal drug, a synthetic drug,” which is “a derivative of marijuana.” The police did not provide any evidence that children were purchasing CBD products in any capacity.

The highlight came when an attending journalist pointed out that none of the seized products contained Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) countering a claim from Smyrna chief Kevin Arnold that CBD is, “used to get high,” and can’t be consumed without a prescription.

When the reporter revealed that it is legal without prescription and asked if they were going to raid Walmart which also a stocks CBD next, Arnold said “yes,” and that he had no idea if the contraband contained THC.

This embarrassing misadventure did not go unchallenged after the conference, prompting a condemnatory response from numerous outlets, including an email written by the President of the Tennessee Hemp Industries Association, Joe Kirkpatrick, who opened with the following statement:

“Unless the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department and the Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and La Vergne

can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the CBD products were derived from a ‘marijuana’ source rather than an ‘industrial hemp’ source, they are in clear contravention of the law allowing the growth, processing, blending, and marketing of such products and the victims of this action should be entitled to petition for any economic and/or punitive damages applicable under the law.”

Kirkpatrick also reminded readers that both CBD isolate and full-spectrum extract are legal under Tennessee law. The legal backlash is ongoing and further developments are expected.

In addition to serving as an undeniable display of excessive policing sprouting from misinformation, this is being taken by vapers and advocates as an unnerving development and possible glimpse of what could happen next. Like vaping itself, CBD is slowly gaining mainstream acceptance as scaremongering stories about the substance are proved wrong and their benefits are proved right.

CHANGE IS IN THE AYR

Essentially the cigalike reimagined with some clever design innovations, AYR is a gateway vape device for smokers wanting a safer alternative to cigarettes that does more than just deliver nicotine.

AYR simulates the ritualistic smoking experience that many smokers are unwilling or unable to sacrifice. Users can choose whether to utilise the app or use AYR as a standalone device. The app tracks usage and liquid level and activates a discreet mode to enable stealth vaping.

With the product set to launch very soon, AYR Sales Director Martin Miller is eager to hear from talented people with industry experience and a passion for vaping.

“The vape channel plays a pivotal part in our channel strategy and I am hoping to find some exceptional talent who want to join me and the rest of the team in laying the foundations for this exciting business.”

Martin is currently on the lookout for sales and business development professionals to assist in the launch as well as an individual with a trade marketing background. There are also plenty of opportunities for recruitment elsewhere in the company.

He added, “There are quite a few hires going on in the other functional areas of the business, so I invite anyone to get in touch if they think they can add value. I am looking to attract the best and this will be reflected in the packages we offer.

“There’s a great buzz about the place, which you only really get when you’ve got a lot of ambitious people working on something they care about. There is definitely a culture of innovation and a total mixed-bag of skills and personalities.”

THE STARTUP BEHIND A REVOLUTIONARY NEW VAPE DEVICE IS LOOKING FOR PASSIONATE AND SKILLED PEOPLE IN THE VAPING INDUSTRY TO HELP BRING THE PRODUCT TO MARKET
NEWS

AYR offers a unique and vibrant working culture driven by hard-working professionals from a variety of creative and operational disciplines. It’s an exciting environment in which to work.

Martin is very keen to recruit from within the industry where an enthusiasm for vaping fuels continual innovation and creativity. Self-starters who can work independently in a fast-paced environment have the potential to thrive at AYR.

“Passion and huge amounts of energy and enthusiasm for the vape category are a must. This is a startup so they will be involved in making things happen and it will be very different from what they are currently used to,” said Martin.

The AYR device will be unveiled to the trade at the inaugural UKVIA Forum taking place on April 23 at the King’s Fund in London.

The forum will cover the many and varied issues pertinent to the vaping industry in 2018 and beyond, such as the policy and regulatory landscape, changes to the advertising of vape products, vaping and public health and the potential for the UK to set global industry standards.

Martin said, “The event is called Going for Growth and comes at an exciting time for the industry with Public Health England reinforcing its acknowledgement that vaping represents one of the best ways to quit smoking and therefore a positive public health opportunity. I am delighted to announce that we have agreed to be the

headline sponsor of this event and we will be unveiling our product to the trade at this event.”

There will be several high-profile speakers and panellists from the industry, government and public health, including Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) e-cigarette unit manager, Craig Copland, Sarah Jakes of the New Nicotine Alliance, independent consultant and vape advocate Clive Bates and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, Gareth Johnson MP. Martin will be speaking at the ‘Tomorrow’s World: Next Generation Vaping Innovations to Watch Out For’ talk.

The AYR vape device has been four years in the making. The recruitment drive presents a huge opportunity for talented individuals to help bring it to fruition and be part of a game-changing technological innovation.

“Now we have a fully-formed launch plan, it’s time to get the right people in place to make it happen. A lot of time and energy has gone into reaching this point and so now we need a team of experienced, hungry professionals to make our ambitious plan a reality.”

Private Members Bill seeks to exempt vaping products from TPD regulation in UK

A Conservative MP is spearheading a move to exempt vaping from the regulations imposed by the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD).

Christchurch MP Sir Christopher Chope has tabled a Private Member’s Bill to significantly relax UK vaping regulations and this is due to receive its second reading in the House of Commons on April 27.

The Electronic Cigarettes (Regulation) Bill seeks to exempt e-cigarettes from UK law derived from the TPD. If passed it would amend the existing legislation, The Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016, so that the advertising ban on vaping products would be lifted. It would also see the end of the 10ml bottle rule, the 2ml limit on tank sizes and existing restrictions on maximum nicotine strengths.

Regulations regarding labelling and packaging would also be lifted under Sir Christopher’s bill, which is proposed to come into effect on March 30 2019, the day after the UK is due to leave the European Union. The bill is unlikely to mean an end to all regulation in the UK as parliament would still have the power to

30 | VM16

replace the TPD requirements with rules of its own. If it becomes law, it would be known as the Electronic Cigarettes (Regulation) Act 2018.

There are several hurdles the bill has yet to get over before it could become law and there is no guarantee that it will ever make its way into the statute books. The bill, which is just two pages long, says it is designed to, “make provision for the regulation of the sale and use of electronic cigarettes; to exempt electronic cigarettes from UK law derived from the Tobacco Products Directive; and for connected purposes.”

The IBVTA described the bill as “a step in the right direction” but warned that Private Members’ Bills rarely became law and are often used as tools to promote debate.

It said on its website, “MPs do not usually draft Private Members’ Bills in an attempt at changing legislation, but in order to spur a debate on a topic which they are interested in.

Meanwhile the IBVTA recently met with the Public Health Minister Steve Brine MP to discuss vaping and the independent industry. It said,

VM16 | 31
In summary, we do not expect for this bill to be passed, [but] it is nevertheless an important step forward and another indication that politicians are taking vaping and the contribution and concerns of IBVTA members’ businesses seriously.
We continue to engage with politicians, locally, nationally and at EU level, in order for the independent vape industry’s concerns to be heard.

FIGHTING BACK

DANNY WANG OF THE TAIWAN VAPE ASSOCIATION TELLS US HOW TO RESIST ANTI-VAPING ACTION

In our last issue, we published Trouble in Asia, an article bringing you up to speed on the implications of Taiwan’s pharmaceutical affairs law and the existential threat it poses to the domestic vape industry.

The only major body resisting this change is the Taiwan Vape Association (TVA), which has been vocally campaigning against it in the hope of reaching a compromise with the government and buying the domestic scene more time to prepare for future attacks.

Unwelcome change can often come incrementally, in so many stages few notice until it may be too late. Taiwan’s ruling creeps the country toward what could be a killing blow – a sabotage potent enough to end the business without explicitly describing this as its mission.

Danny Wang is the founder and current general secretary of the TVA. He doesn’t mince his words when describing the situation. “In Taiwan, we are looking at a total ban on vaping,” he says. Those still working to prevent this have one remaining lifeline: compiling and presenting evidence to the country’s lawmakers.

According to Danny, nearly everything presented so far has been biased against vaping and provided almost exclusively by antivaping groups.

“We have to present the other side, ensure the lawmakers see the full range of studies and reports before making their final decision.”

The TVA have their work cut out for them, but the scope of this challenge hasn’t slowed them. Danny tells us that in addition to mobilising small and large business owners, the association has campaigned through giving talks, organising press conferences, handing out leaflets with the appropriate scientific literature and most importantly, translating the evidence into Mandarin.

Solidarity and support have become integral traits for those in the international vape trade, an entity often attacked from all sides by everything from

inaccurate reporting to misguided regulation. The situation in Taiwan, like so many others, is a cautionary example attracting some worried glances from overseas. Breaking the language barrier goes a long way in helping.

Danny says, “We trade and compile information with our allies, many of which are in countries facing a similar situation. These are organisations like the Hong Kong Vape Association. We also liaise with places like Malaysia and Shenzhen.”

We asked Danny how other allies and business owners could best lend support, besides the obvious channels of donating to causes and signing petitions. He says, “The best way to help us is to improve your home vape scene to set a good example; an example we can provide as evidence that vaping works and is safe.”

But, providing and presenting evidence won’t be the end of the struggle. The most significant obstacle will be breaking through the mythology built around vaping once the debate begins.

Danny tells us that the gateway theory – the idea that e-cigarettes encourage combustible smoking – is very popular in Taiwan.

“Not even the government’s own research supports such a thing. We don’t see it in any other country either. It’s based on recycled rumours and badly researched news stories. Compromise is achievable. There’s a possibility we’ll end up like Japan – with a heavily restricted nicotine market. Ideally, we want to keep both nicotine and non-nicotine liquids; it’s more likely we’ll get to keep the latter. But the ‘anti’ crowd isn’t budging. They want a total ban. There’s also no chance for CBD or TNC-containing products here.”

Losing nicotine is very far from an ideal state for Taiwanese e-cigarettes, undercutting their primary purpose of smoking cessation. However, it would buy the trade more time and more wiggle-room to continue negotiating.

A weakened vape trade is better than none and the fight is far from over.

TEETH

Teeth! You wouldn’t have much of a smile without them. And let’s not underrate the value of that smile!

It helps you present a positive, up-beat image to others; apparently it also makes you more attractive (assuming you have reasonably nice teeth) and even makes you and others feel happier! So, it’s not surprising that hanging on to your teeth and making them look as good as possible is pretty high up on the grooming agenda for most people.

Our teeth are always under attack from the various liquids and particles they come into contact with every day. Everything you put into your mouth potentially impacts the health and appearance of your teeth and gums. Too much sugar – not good – because it rots your teeth! Too much tea, coffee or red wine – not good either- because they can stain your teeth. Smoking is also known to have detrimental effects on teeth. Smokers get ‘stains’, turning teeth from a healthy-looking white to an unhealthy-looking yellow/brown colour. And although this staining is commonly referred to as nicotine staining, it is not caused by nicotine, but by the tar in smoke. That said, smokers switching to vaping are unlikely to be doing so, solely for their teeth. But vapers are still rightly concerned over the impact of vaping on teeth and oral health in general. After all, good oral health is about more than just teeth.

According to the NHS (UK National Health Service) and other groups, the state of your teeth affects your overall health, with gum disease linked to lots of health problems in other parts of the body. An unhealthy mouth can increase the risk of serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke and poorly controlled

diabetes. Taking care of oral health is a worthy goal in and of itself, therefore, but so too is understanding its importance and its connection to your overall health.

There hasn’t been a lot of research into the impact of vaping on teeth and oral health. But we, at British American Tobacco, and others are looking at the potential positive impact on oral health of switching cigarette consumers to e-cigarettes. The good news is that preliminary results suggest that vaping does not stain teeth like smoke does.

Smoking and those pearly whites!

The health risks of smoking are well-known. Smoking is linked to lung cancer, as well as heart and respiratory problems. Most people who smoke are aware of these risks. A lesser known side effect of smoking that doesn’t get as much attention is the toll it can take on your teeth. Tobacco smoke can damage teeth and the mouth in a number of different ways. Some of the substances in smoke impact the mouth’s ability to fight infection, making it harder to fight plaque and bacteria. This can cause a build-up of plaque on teeth, making them susceptible to decay. Particles in cigarette smoke can also rub against teeth, wearing away the protective enamel. This not only makes the teeth more vulnerable, it makes the enamel more transparent so that the darker dentin underneath can be seen, giving teeth a darker, less attractive appearance in general. Smokers are also up to six times more likely to develop gum disease..

Teeth – Our very own peacock’s tail!

Like a peacock’s tail, teeth in humans are used to judge attractiveness. A study by researchers at the Universities of Leeds and Central Lancashire showed that a white, evenly spaced set of teeth make people seem younger, healthier and more attractive. This is because like a peacock’s tail, good teeth are a sign of health and genetic quality.

Researchers took pictures of models before digitally changing the colour and spacing of their teeth. Three shades were used to colour the teeth – a yellowish brown, healthy white, and a dazzling white that can only be achieved by bleaching. The photos were then shown to 150 young men and women who were then asked how attractive they found the models.

Yellow teeth were unpopular, as were widely spaced teeth, according to the results, which was published in the journal PLoS ONE. The researchers say that teeth are used to judge age and fertility as well as providing clues to childhood illnesses, diet and some genetic disorders. The good news is that anyone with yellow teeth need not rush out to spend a fortune on whitening, as brilliant white smiles were judged to be no more attractive than a more natural shade of white.

Our Study

As part of our studies on oral health, scientists at British American Tobacco have studied discoloration in teeth. In this study, we assessed a prototype Vype e-cigarette and a tobacco heating product (glo) for tooth discoloration and compared the impact on teeth to that of cigarette smoke.

A puffing robot (Figure 1 A) was used to puff on the products to produce smoke and vapour. In each case, the smoke or vapour was collected onto a filter pad and then a solvent was used to extract the solid material from the filter pad. The impact of the extracted material (extract) on tooth discoloration was then tested using cows’ teeth.

Cows’ teeth are routinely used in laboratory experiments in lieu of human teeth. They are used for example to test oral hygiene products like toothpaste and mouthwash (“Bovine Teeth as a Substitute for Human Teeth in Dental Research: a review of literature”, Journal of Oral Science 2011, Vol 53, No 3, 273-282)

The teeth were first prepared by polishing them using fine sandpaper to create a surface more like that of human teeth. The teeth were then incubated at body temperature in human saliva to create an environment mimicking that in the human mouth. This incubation results in the creation of the so-called pellicle layer on the teeth. This is the smooth film you can feel on your teeth when you rub your tongue over them. It is basically the normal protein layer that forms on the teeth when certain molecules in saliva bond to the tooth enamel.

The teeth were then incubated in an oven at body temperature and exposed to the various extracts from the cigarette smoke or e-cig or THP vapour. Some teeth were also incubated in solvent with no extract at all to act as a control/blank.

After the first day, the teeth exposed to the smoke extract started to change colour and over the course of 14 days, these teeth got darker and darker in colour. Even with the naked eye, the color changes with the cigarette extract could be easily seen after 1 day. The exact colour change was also measured in the laboratory using a special camera that can detect tiny changes in hue. In contrast to teeth exposed to smoke extract, those exposed to extracts from the e-cigarette or THP products exhibited minimal change in colour, similar to untreated teeth (Figure 2).

These results were presented at the annual conference of the American Association for Dental Research in Florida, US, on 24th March. These results are very encouraging, but these experiments represent an extreme scenario – almost continuous exposure to a very concentrated extract for two weeks. However, future work will focus on developing tests that more accurately represent how teeth and the mouth are exposed to smoke and vapour when a consumer uses their product. This will allow comparisons of the impact of smoking versus vaping versus using a tobacco heated product in conditions that mimic real life use.

DIARY OF A VAPER

I bought my first packet of cigarettes when I was about 14. It was £1.43 for a 10-deck. I would dodge the bus fare every few days and then use the money to buy a pack.

This continued on-and-off until I was 17 when I smoked continuously, all day and every day.

I was your classic unrepentant smoker and never tried or even wanted to stop. I didn’t really see it as a problem. Obviously, I knew it wasn’t good for me but it never caused me any issues, so I didn’t really think about it.

My girlfriend started getting into vaping and mixing her own liquids. With all the materials to hand, it became easier for me to vape than go to the shop to pick up some tobacco. That’s where I find myself now.

Admittedly I still smoke tobacco occasionally, but now I mostly vape. I know stopping altogether would be the best thing to do health-wise, but I feel a lot better now than when I was a full-time smoker. Cutting down significantly has undoubtedly been good for me.

The varying flavours of e-liquids is a major advantage that vaping has over smoking. I’m not hugely fussy but tend to gravitate towards fruity flavours. As long as it’s

not something like ice cream or rice pudding, I’ll happily vape it. In the beginning I used 6mg of nicotine but over time I dropped to 3mg without noticing any difference. The main thing I like about vaping is the flexibility. That is why I don’t really understand the TPD. On the one hand we’re being told to switch to vaping because it’s healthier but then on the other hand there are all these pointless restrictions.

The 2ml tank size is just an inconvenience. It would be far better to have a bigger tank that you’d only need to fill once a day. I can’t help but think that the tobacco companies played a part in all of this. After all, vaping isn’t really in their best interests.

I’m now on my second mod, the Innokin SmartBox. It pulls just like a cigarette and is really satisfying to vape. There really is no reason not to try vaping. Clean nicotine without the harmful effects of tobacco – it’s a win-win.

“I made a few attempts to quit over the 20-plus years I smoked,” says Jason. “The last time I quit cold turkey and managed to stay cigarette-free for a few years. But then I started again and went on to smoke for a further six years.”

Jason’s story is a familiar one. All it took was one cigarette for him to fall back into the addiction. It was only through finding vaping that he was finally able quit smoking for good.

You might say that vaping found Jason, rather than the other way around. “A life insurance customer told me that he didn’t smoke but did use an e-cigarette. But as e-cigarettes are considered tobacco products he has to be classed as a smoker.”

After quizzing the customer about vaping, Jason picked up a basic starter kit from a local convenience store. He soon found himself spiralling down a vaping rabbit hole, watching YouTube videos and browsing Reddit for advice.

“None of the liquids I liked were available

nearby, so I asked the companies to send some to me to take into stores myself.”

One store owner introduced Jason to Zac of East Coast Vape Distribution and Zac suggested he have-a-go at selling their brands over-the-phone. Jason wasn’t interested. Instead he began helping vape shop owners obtain lower and more appropriate rates on their credit card processing fees.

“As I got more immersed in the scene I started to notice that no one was paying any attention to the South American market. Zac had ties to Colombia so in late 2016 we started to talk about putting an expo together.”

It took just 45 days to sell out the indoor space at the inaugural Vape South America in Medellin. They had to expand outside but that area quickly sold out too. While South America was still an emerging market, the growth potential was clear for all to see and many of those who came in 2017 have leapt at the chance to come back.

side of things. We’ll introduce local business owners to companies from the US and UK. They’ve followed the path that South American businesses are now on so will be able to offer plenty of invaluable advice.”

There is significant income disparity in South America so costs will need to be driven down if vaping is to flourish. While vaping companies are free to operate in Colombia, restrictions hamper the industry in three potentially huge markets: Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina. But Jason remains optimistic that the industry will continue to grow.

“There are vapers on the boundaries of all those countries who are doing business with one another so there’s a lot of potential there.”

For his part, Jason hopes to put on two or three expos a year, in Peru and Paraguay as well as in Colombia.

He says, “I love working with the young and enthusiastic people who make up the vibrant industry that helped me finally quit cigarettes for good.”

Public Health England release an update to their landmark 2015 study

Three years ago, Public Health England released a study that birthed one of the most oft-repeated statistics in vaping and vape-friendly circles: that when comparing effect on the body, e-cigarettes are at least 95% safer than combustibles. It’s a powerful number, and one that deserves its reverence and repetition, considering the obvious potential it presents for e-cigarettes as a harm reduction and smoking cessation tool, and how disconnected both public perception and policy are from the reality of vaping’s relative safety.

The paper was authored by several scholars who have since become prominent figures in the pro-vaping sphere, among them were Professor Ann McNeill of King’s College London and professor Peter Hajek from the London School of Medicine.

But scientific inquiry must never be a settled, static endeavour. We now have an evidence update; a review of the 2015 study, once again led by Ann McNeill, which has vindicated vaping’s undeniable place as the best harm-reduction alternative.

Professor John Newton, director for health Improvement at Public Health England, spoke emphatically of their renewed findings.

“Our new review reinforces the finding that vaping is a fraction of the risk of smoking, at least 95% less harmful and of negligible risk to bystanders.” Ever mindful of what this means for public health in the UK, Newton also reminded us that “every minute someone is admitted to hospital from smoking, with around 79,000 deaths a year in England alone” and added that it would be, “tragic if thousands of smokers who could quit with the help of an e-cigarette are being put off due to false fears about their safety.”

Duncan Selbie, chief executive at PHE wrote the foreword to the updated study, his statements taking on a similar tone, emphasising their usefulness in cessation and pushing for their greater support.

“In a nutshell, best estimates show e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful to your health than normal cigarettes, and when supported by a smoking cessation service, help most smokers to quit tobacco altogether.”

The update has been welcomed across the board as a boon to vaping’s mainstream clout. In a press release via their website, the IBVTA welcomed the new publication, with cvhairman Fraser Cropper taking aim at persistently inaccurate and negative news stories about vapour products and how they undercut harm reduction potential and squander smoke-free initiatives:

“The ability of vaping to transform the public health landscape is routinely undermined by the repetition of irresponsible reporting which ignores the relative risk of vaping and smoking. We welcome this updated evidence review from Public Health England which re-enforces the harm reduction potential and public health gains which can only be realised if smokers are given accurate information about vaping.”

True to their name, the IBVTA remain committed to ensuring this results in appropriate legislative reform, especially concerning the still controversial TPD.

“We especially welcome the report’s recommendation that further research should specifically assess the impact of the EU Tobacco Products Directive on consumers and the independent vape sector, free from any links to the tobacco industry, who introduced vaping to the UK and who continue to run the overwhelming majority of vape businesses in this country, as well as their customers.’’

Coming in at over 100 pages, the study is a hefty read and a peerless investigation into e-cigarette safety in a variety of situations. It begins with a helpful summation dividing the findings into eight key messages.

42 | VM16
FEATURE

Having the evidence on your side is one thing, turning it into practical action is another. The first key message outright recommends e-cigarettes to smokers who have found other methods of nicotine replacement ineffective. The subsequent findings not only present e-cigarettes as a relatively safe and effective tool but puts other fears to rest – such as claims they are undercutting the decline in smoking rates or acting as a gateway to cigarettes. Here is the full list, with some commentary.

1. Smokers who have tried other methods of quitting without success could be encouraged to try e-cigarettes (EC) to stop smoking and stop smoking services should support smokers using EC to quit by offering them behavioural support.

2. Encouraging smokers who cannot or do not want to stop smoking to switch to EC could help reduce smoking related disease, death and health inequalities.

3. There is no evidence that EC are undermining the long-term decline in cigarette smoking among adults and youth and may in fact be contributing to it. Despite some experimentation with EC among never smokers, EC are attracting very few people who have never smoked into regular EC use.

Recent studies support the Cochrane Review findings that EC can help people to quit smoking and reduce their cigarette consumption. There is also evidence that EC can encourage quitting or cigarette consumption reduction even among those not intending to quit or rejecting other support. More research is

When used as intended, EC pose no risk of nicotine poisoning to users, but e-liquids should be in childproof packaging. The accuracy of nicotine content labelling currently raises no major

Ann McNeill has weighed in on the issue of nicotine, saying, “People smoke for the nicotine, but contrary to what the vast majority believe, nicotine causes little if any of the harm.

The toxic smoke is the culprit and is the overwhelming cause of all the tobacco-related disease and death. There are now a greater variety of alternative ways of getting nicotine than ever before, including nicotine gum, nasal spray, lozenges and e-cigarettes.”

The study’s closing statements also reveal that “experienced vapers, using their own devices, however obtain much better

The sixth pointer is a clear indictment of alarmist press coverage concerning e-cigarettes, stating there has been an “overall shift towards the inaccurate perception of EC being as harmful as cigarettes over the last year in contrast to the current expert estimate that using EC is around 95% safer than smoking.”

Whilst protecting non-smoking children and ensuring the products on the market are as safe and effective as possible are clearly important goals, new regulations currently planned should also maximise the public health opportunities of EC.

Continued vigilance and research in this area are needed. The eighth and final summarised point reminds us that this is an evolving scientific venture and people on every side of the vaping issue must always be vigilant of new research and advances in

A final number to see us into the next phase of public health initiatives is the number 20,000. The gov.uk press release tells us that in this country, “e-cigarettes could be contributing to at least 20,000 successful new quits per year and possibly many more.”

The 113-page study can be read in full at gov.uk . The document thoroughly covers all methodologies used and their specific outcomes. It will no doubt carry significant weight in the vaping industry for some time.

STUDY REVEALS

the importance of vape shops and where we go next

VAPE SHOPS

A Cancer Research UK-funded study has displayed the essential role vape shops play in helping smokers make a more permanent change from smoking to e-cigarettes. The paper is titled, “A Qualitative Exploration of the Role of Vape Shop Environments in Supporting Smoking Abstinence.”

It comes to us via research conducted at the University of East Anglia and was headed by Dr Emma Ward, Senior Research Associate in Norwich Medical School and a member of the UEA Addiction Research group on smoking relapse prevention studies.

Forty people who had switched from smoking to vaping were interviewed for the study and quizzed about their experience of support via vape shops. Researchers also surveyed six vape shops throughout the country, closely monitoring interactions between staff and customers – be they curious smokers or vaping regulars trying to stay off the habit.

A summation of the results in the opening abstract described a positive correlation between a supportive environment and persistence in smoking cessation. “At an individual level, smoking abstinence was supported

through shop assistants’ attempts to understand customers’ smoking preferences in order to: (i) tailor advice about the most appropriate product; and (ii) offer an ongoing point of contact for practical help. At an interpersonal level, shops offered opportunity to socialise and reinforce a vaping identity…”

Like all valuable research, the piece also laid out where vape shops (and the general business and consumer culture) need improvement, citing certain atmospheres and practices which may be off-putting.

“…Although the environment was perceived as intimidating for some (e.g., new and female users)”

An additional bonus finding was also the revelation that shops are on the whole, law abiding and keeping to regulatory practice.

“At a structural level, shops ensured easy access to products perceived to be good value by customers and had adapted to legislative changes.”

The research team found advantages in logistics and efficiency for new and inexperienced vapers in acquiring the right liquids and getting their mods fully optimised. Before the expansion of vape shops, users had to rely solely on trial and

“ “

error, a risky method considering how addictive smoking is. The study was clear in its conclusion that, “shop assistants troubleshoot with customers if they had relapsed and try and find a solution, such as fixing their device or upping their nicotine strength.”

Dr Ward also saw the social and personal aspects of the vape shop culture as filling certain gaps left by quitting smoking. “Smokers are addicted to nicotine, but there are also lots of complex psychosocial behaviours associated with smoking.” This is helpfully laid out in an infographic which identifies the key elements of a ‘vaping identity’ as one formed in three environments at three levels: structural, interpersonal and personal, with their defining characteristics displayed. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen formal academic research conducted into this topic. In April 2015, noted vaping advocate Professor Riccardo Polosa, Director of the Institute for Internal and Emergency Medicine of the University of Catania in Italy, published the first venture; a prospective 12-month survey. Despite this foundational bedrock, research must always be updated. Fortunately, both studies have vindicated vape shops and found their inclusion and support important. Professor Polosa’s conclusion expressed confidence in the effectiveness of shops.

“Here we have shown for the first time that combining availability of appealing e-vapour products for smoking substitution with professional advice from vape shops staff it is possible to achieve high and stable success rates.”

But, as we’ve seen before, when it comes to progress and meaningful reform in smoking cessation and public health efforts, studies and evidence gathering are often just the beginning. These steps are essential, but the road to change involves gathering political clout and widespread support. As the story of the 2018 research spread, immediately following its publication on February 9, vape industry advocates and public health officials also stressed the importance of strengthening ties between vape shops and the public health

powers-that-be, with some stressing a potential collaboration with the NHS. The origin of this sentiment is found in the closing statements of the abstract, which states, “Health professionals could capitalise on this through partnerships working with shops, to ensure best outcomes for clients wanting to use e-cigarettes to quit smoking.”

The academic mind is a cautious one, ever mindful of the need for moderation, scepticism, patience and greater knowledge. In the study’s closing statements, the authors warn against generalisation and remind us that further investigation is needed. However they also tell us that “the advice witnessed as being given by shops mirrors advice given by experienced vapers in other research.”

Moving forward, this is a weighty endorsement for further collaboration between the healthcare establishment and vape trade, as well as another encouraging development for the trade’s allies and leaders. The IBVTA have been highly supportive. Ian Green, Owner of Southampton Vaping Centre and Chairman of the IBVTA’s Vendor Committee, contributed this statement:

“It is wonderful to see a study that recognises the positive impact vape shops are having on the public health landscape. Every day IBVTA members across the country are helping people switch from smoking to vaping. Indeed, as the study identifies, our businesses are on the frontline day in, day out and are the best solution for smokers and vapers.”

The study’s closing statement looks ahead to an escalation in this recent, promising alliance between public health services specialising in cessation, and the many vape shops in the country.

“Future research could consider evaluating joint working between Stop Smoking Services and vape shops to help smokers achieve and maintain smoking cessation.”

The text was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. You can access the study and infographics in full at mdpi.com.

Adact are now offering Vapouround readers the opportunity to ask questions about TPD regulations and compliance via a dedicated email address and we will print a selection of questions and answers in each issue of the magazine.

We put six questions to Adact’s team of safety and compliance experts for this issue…

50 | VM16
FEATURE

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ENTER THE VAPING INDUSTRY?

Our founder and Chief Regulatory Officer, Damien Bove, was initially involved in nicotine products pre-TPD for medical licencing, specifically e-cigarette projects. When TPD was announced, Damien identified that he could provide a cost-effective solution for the industry in registering products under TPD. This is the reason Adact are the single largest submitter in the industry. Managing Director Robert Sidebottom joined Adact in July 2017 as he could see the huge opportunities that the sector provided. Robert has the specific brief of driving the company forward in its ambition to provide a comprehensive compliance solution for the US vaping market while maintaining Adact as the most successful compliance agency in Europe. Damien, Robert and the Adact team are proud to serve the industry and provide productivity solutions such as TPD Expert (adactmedical.com/tpd) and the Adact PAP. You can read more about that on pages 50 - 51

WHAT REGULATIONS ARE SHORT-FILLS SUBJECT TO?

All zero-nicotine products fall out of the scope of TPD. However, these products are regulated under the General Products Safety Regulations 2005 (GPSR). Section five of the regulations is clear: no producer shall place or supply a product unless it is safe. There are several sections of the GPSR that give more detailed directions on how to ensure that products are safe. However, our advice is to use the TPD as a due diligence process to ensure that zero-nicotine products are safe for the consumer. Mark Oliver, Trading Standards Business Hub Manager, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Trading Standards says,

“Following the TPD as a due diligence process is a robust method to help ensure these products meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations.”

As a minimum you should test, analyse and produce safety data sheets using the same methodology as TPD. Adact provides a comprehensive testing solution for zero-nicotine products, when clients have their products tested and analysed with us. The products are also listed on Zero Expert (adactmedical.com/zne), a voluntary national notification database for all zero-nicotine products.

Q&A

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR REGULATING CBD E-LIQUIDS?

The responsibility for regulating CBD in e-liquid form currently falls with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency(MHRA), particularly with regards to medical claims. As a zero-nicotine product, CBD e-liquids are regulated under GPSR. The Cannabis Trades Association UK (CTA UK) are currently in early discussions with the MHRA regarding setting up an exclusive regulator for all CBD products.

Adact are one of two preferred testing organisations for the CTA UK and we strongly advise all companies involved in the manufacture, production and sale of CBD products to join the CTA UK, which can provide detailed assistance and advice regarding this gamechanging product.

WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE PROPOSAL TO EXEMPT VAPE PRODUCTS FROM THE TPD?

HOW

DO WE

GO ABOUT SUBMITTING E-LIQUIDS TO THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION?

There is a two-tier approach for products that were on the market in the US before August 2017. Small companies need to file their recipes with the FDA by November and large companies by May of this year. In theory, no new products were allowed onto the market after August 2017 without first going through a full PreMarket Tobacco Authorisation (PMTA) with the FDA. All products need to be processed by 2022. US-based companies will have already been required to list their product and register their premises with the FDA. Adact provide a comprehensive PMTA submission service. Please contact us directly for moe information.

The Private Member’s Bill second reading regarding exemption of vape products for TPD has been deferred to the end of April. The fact that the bill was seventh on the agenda in March indicates that it may have been used as a parliamentary tactic to jam up the legislative timetable.

If the bill achieves legislative success in the future then we would revert to the same position as pre-TPD, unless another proposal for regulation was implemented. Adact do not feel that this bill will achieve legislative success. It is however very useful to spark debate and raise the profile of specific issues such a zero-nicotine safety and TPD bottle size.

HOW WOULD BECOMING A MEMBER OF ADACT PAP BENEFIT OUR BUSINESS?

The primary benefit is that you must only deal with one trading standards body. This prevents confusion and red tape.

ADACT MEDICAL LAUNCH THE ADACT CO-ORDINATED PRIMARY AUTHORITY PARTNERSHIP

Adact Medical often receive calls from clients who have been challenged by regional trading standards bodies regarding their interpretation of the UK Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR) 2016.

Due to the regional structure of trading standards bodies across the UK the TRPR / TPD regulations are often interpreted differently, this results in confusion, stress and lost time to red tape for many manufacturers and retailers. Adact have entered into a government-sponsored partnership under the Regulatory Enforcement & Sanctions Act of 2008 with the Peterborough & Cambridgeshire County Council Trading Standards to form ‘The Adact Co-ordinated Primary Authority Partnership (Adact PAP)’. The scheme is designed for businesses who have a shared approach to compliance enabling them to gain the benefits of following agreed advice from a single regulatory authority.

With this new venture Adact have issued an open invitation to companies across the industry where Partnership members can deal exclusively with the Peterborough & Cambridgeshire County Council Trading Standards, regardless of where they are based in the country.

Greg Cox of vape company QCig said:

BUT WHAT EXACTLY DO PRIMARY AUTHORITIES ACCOMPLISH?

Primary authorities provide advice to businesses that other local enforcement officials must respect regarding compliance with the regulations. The Adact PAP can also produce an inspection plan for a business to improve the effectiveness of visits by local regulators and underpin better sharing of information.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

Members enrolled will receive access to relevant, authoritative advice tailored to their business needs. Members will also be able to recognise robust compliance arrangements, gain the ability to draw on an established and effective means of meeting business regulations and can gain confidence that they are protecting customers and securing growth.

“ “

It just makes perfect sense! As soon as I learned that Adact were setting up a partnership with Peterborough and Cambridge Trading Standards I signed up. I have wasted too much of my time dealing with different enforcement officers who all seem to interpret TPD in different ways.

When you register, then your entire UK businesses/retail outlets and entities – no matter where they are situated – will be covered by one single trading standards office (Peterborough & Cambridgeshire) which means no more regional confusion about the interpretation of regulations.

It also means that if any other local trading standards officers visit any of your outlets, you may inform them that you are part of the Adact PAP and refer them to Peterborough & Cambridgeshire Trading Standards, who will then deal directly with the regional trading standards body to resolve any issues. Enrolled businesses will receive a document confirming membership and a window sticker advertising that they are a member of the Adact PAP. Adact would also like would-be members to know that you don’t have to be based in the UK to be a recipient of this service.

54 | VM16
FEATURE

The fee for joining this group is £50 per annum per outlet – for example; business, retail premises etc. The fees cover administration of the group and pay for projects undertaken by the Adact PAP on behalf of the group. The Adact PAP will work closely with its members to address any highlighted issues, such as researching and developing a single labelling and packaging guideline. Peterborough & Cambridgeshire Trading Standards are available to members for individual projects and they will invoice them directly for work undertaken on a member’s behalf, such as liaising between a vape company and the Health & Safety Executive or other trading standards bodies regarding ongoing issues. This is invoiced £62.00 per hour.

ONE LAST WORD: SHORT-FILL COMPLIANCE AND THE ADACT PAP

Adact also laid out how they intend to use the Adact PAP to help vape companies navigate the issue of short-fill compliance: Trish Kingham, the Adact PAP Co-Ordinator said: “As UKVIA members, Adact are committed to the growth and promotion of the vaping industry and the continuous improvement of standards for consumer protection. Adact have commissioned the Adact PAP on behalf of the industry to produce clear guidelines regarding short-fill compliance in accordance with the General Products Safety Regulations (GPSR) and our trading standards officer is in contact with the MHRA. We look forward to sharing these guidelines once this critical work is complete.”

Adact urge you to join the Adact PAP in complete confidence that this small investment will benefit your business greatly.

DEBUNKing THE GATEWAY EFFECT

On January 23 2018, the United States National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) published their FDA-commissioned Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes report. The academy examined over 800 peer-reviewed studies investigating everything from the contents of e-cigarette vapour in the atmosphere to the risks of poor-quality batteries exploding.

While the report gained significant international attention, it mostly just reinforced what we already knew about vaping: e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than combustible cigarettes, offering smokers the opportunity to reduce their risk of developing a smoking-related illness.

But the press release also stated, “There is substantial evidence that e-cigarette use by youth and young adults increases their risk of ever using conventional cigarettes.”

It was this damning conclusion that the US media latched onto. And you can hardly blame them. As almost-daily news stories would attest, underage vaping in schools has become a serious problem in the past year. But one thing both sides of the debate agree on is that under-18s shouldn’t be vaping. What we need to be asking is what they are vaping, why they are vaping and will their vaping to lead to smoking?

Gateway models have been around since the 1950s, when drug enforcement authorities began warning people that marijuana use led to deadly heroin use, an idea that has long since been debunked. The term ‘gateway drug’ itself was popularised by Dr Robert L. DuPont, Jr’s book,

‘Getting Tough on Gateway Drugs: A Guide for the Family’, published in 1984. President Ronald Reagan had reignited the country’s ‘war on drugs’ first initiated by Richard Nixon in 1971.

DuPont opined that it was relatively unlikely for a young person who does not use marijuana to use other drugs. He did not suggest that marijuana is a ‘gateway’ to harder drugs. Statistics show that only a tiny minority of people who smoke marijuana go on to try harder drugs. But 34 years later, this cause-and-effect idea persists, though, ironically, it is nicotine that is now demonised while cannabis has become socially-acceptable and legal in an increasing number of states.

If vaping really does lead to smoking, then why does cigarette use continue to decline?
FEATURE

It’s a matter of causations vs correlation. The authors of these studies and countless others see similarities between two variables that lead them to conclude that young vapers will develop into smokers. Going by that logic, you could also say that playing with Lego or eating ice cream as a child will lead to a smoking habit later in life. But really the two are independent of each other. Surely, if vaping easily led to smoking, wouldn’t the number of vapers be going down and the number of smokers going up, or at least plateauing? Vapers would be slipping back into old habits all the time if vaping was a ‘gateway’. Smoking is a gateway to vaping, not visa versa.

Last year was the first year that vaping was included in the study, which revealed that students were more likely to vape ‘just flavouring’ than nicotine-containing e-liquid. If nicotine is removed from the equation, so is one of the key properties that makes cigarettes so appealing.

Teenagers should not be vaping. Full stop. But rather than ignoring the fact that some do or stoking unfounded fears about a reversal of decades of smoking decline, we should see it for what it is: experimentation. Few, if any, of those non-smokers who pick up an e-cigarette will develop a habit and fewer still will walk through the mythical gateway and become smokers.

In ‘Young People’s Use of E-Cigarettes across the United Kingdom: Findings from Five Surveys 2015–2017’, Lead author Linda Bauld, professor of health policy at the University of Stirling, said, “Recent studies have generated alarming headlines that e-cigarettes are leading to smoking. Our analysis of the latest surveys from all parts of the United Kingdom, involving thousands of teenagers, shows clearly that for those teens who don’t smoke, e-cig experimentation is simply not translating into regular use.”

In Monitoring the Future Survey: High School and Youth Trends, the National Institute on Drug Abuse in the US reported that student use of illicit drugs other than marijuana remained at its lowest level in the past 20 years.

VM16 | 61
E-cigarette use among teenagers appears to be lower in the UK, but there’s still plenty of research into the issue on this side of the Atlantic.

AUSTRALIA’S STRONG ANTI-NICOTINE STANCE IS DETERRING SMOKERS FROM TRYING TO QUIT

In December 2012, Australia became the first country in the world to enforce plain packaging on all tobacco products. The move was applauded by the World Health Organisation.

“The legislation sets a new global standard for the control of a product that accounts for nearly six million deaths each year,” said the Australian government at the time. It took over four years for the UK to follow Australia’s lead. All other developed nations still trail behind. Plain packaging is just one example of the country’s firm anti-smoking policy. On September 1 last year, tobacco excise on cigarettes rose

by 13% to 70 cents per stick, while excise on other tobacco products rose 17% from $771.60 to $901.39 per kilogram. The cost of cigarettes, the impact on smokers’ health and a general hostility towards tobacco have encouraged almost three million people in the UK to switch to a safer source of nicotine. But as nicotine itself is classed as a dangerous poison in Australia, smokers down under are deprived of what is unquestionably the most attractive smoking-cessation aid available today.

According to an analysis by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, between 2010 and 2013 the number of smokers

64 | VM16
FEATURE

in the country fell by 317,000. But between 2013 and 2016, the number increased by 21,100. Meanwhile in the UK, the smoking rate has dropped year-on-year since e-cigarettes were popularised in 2012.

In response to the findings, Alex Wodak, director of the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation, said: “Australia is doing everything right in terms of tobacco control, but one key difference with the UK and USA, where smoking rates have dropped, is our hostility to e-cigarettes.”

Vaping laws vary considerably by state with some such as Western Australia banning the sale of e-cigarettes altogether. Nicotine itself faces the biggest restrictions: in Queensland it is illegal to import nicotine, even for personal use, and it is illegal to use an e-cigarette that contains nicotine. Whereas in Victoria, importation of nicotine and use of nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are both legal.

Vapers can get around nicotine laws by importing from abroad or buying out-of-state. But one of the big selling points of e-cigarettes is their low cost and the ease with which devices and liquids can be obtained. Stubborn, older smokers would be far more inclined to try to quit tobacco if there was a realistic alternative that could find the same high street as they purchase combustible cigarettes.

There is a stark hypocrisy at play here – how can nicotine be illegal but nicotine-containing stop-smoking medications be available over-the-counter? And what about cigarettes themselves? It appears to be nothing more than a matter of ideology – a case of the government wanting to continue to punish smokers after they’ve stopped smoking. Now Australian vapers and industry experts are fighting back. In “Tobacco Harm Reduction: A Formula to Save 500,000 Australian Lives,” associate professor Colin Mendelsohn, tobacco treatment specialist at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of New South Wales, said: “Australia needs to establish a balanced regulatory framework now to allow legal access to nicotine containing e-cigarettes for adult smokers who are unable or unwilling to quit, while setting safety and quality standards and minimising risks to non-smokers, including youth.”

In October 2017, 70 academics, researchers and clinicians sent a letter to the National Health and Medical Research Council. Citing progressive polices in the EU, US, Canada and New Zealand, as well as the growing body of research supporting vaping, the signatories called on the organisation to develop evidence-based vaping guidelines.

“The latest NHMRC CEO statement on E-cigarettes was published on 3 April 2017. As a result of subsequent research and overseas experience, in our opinion it is not consistent with the totality of evidence, particularly important studies that have been published since it was completed.”

In a similar move to our own Vapouround Bus, Australian vapers have taken to their #vapeforceone bus to spread the message that vaping could save hundreds of thousands of Australian lives. The campaign is partly a reaction to comments by Health Minister Greg Hunt, who said in October that a lifting of the ban on e-cigarettes “[is] not going to happen

on my watch.”

Capital city Canberra was the first stop on the tour. Senator Cory Bernardi was on-board and explained to news.com.au his motivation for getting behind the campaign.

“The government’s position is illogical. Vaping is a much safer way for people to satisfy their nicotine addiction and cravings.” The bus will stop at over 30 destinations as it makes its way around the country convincing politicians to push for the legalisation of vaping. Meanwhile, organisations such as the Australian branch of the New Nicotine Alliance and vaping advocates like Clive Bates and professor Colin Mendelsohn continue to champion e-cigarettes with evidence-based arguments that are increasingly difficult for the government to ignore.

No one would argue that nicotine is completely harmless. But nor could that be said about caffeine or sugar. If Australia is to reclaim its status as world leaders in tobacco harm-reduction it must embrace the most successful harm-reduction method available and not penalise former smokers for using it.

Meet bord the company providing some of France’s finest flavours

or centuries, the port city of Bordeaux, France, has been synonymous with wine, art, culture and beauty. Thanks to a vaping boom, it can now add a special e-liquid market to that bounty. Such a place naturally provided endless inspiration to Oliver Medina, founder of BordO2 and Oliver has kindly told Vapouround the company’s story in full.

“It started in 2011 as an oxygen bar which also had e-cigarettes available for patrons to buy,” he says.

The business soon branched out, opening a total of six vape shops with 2012 being a big year for the company when it successfully manufactured its first recipes. As French vaping grew in popularity, Bordeaux became to perfect host city for a vape expo.

“Everything changed in 2014, after the first VAPEXPO in Bordeaux,” says Oliver. “It was our first vape show. We were the first company in France to use glass bottles with inspired visuals. There weren’t as many French brands as today on the market at the time, so we were able to establish ourselves as one of the top ten straight away.”

BordO2 is now a marvel in the French vaping world, taking off and growing with the tremendous speed often seen in those companies which capture the imagination of the public. Its juices can be found in over 200 shops around the country.

“A major moment for us was wholesaling in the UK for the first time. We were able to do this with the help of Vape Importers. Last year we entered a partnership with CRFT Labs in California and had our juices manufactured there, tailored for the US market.”

BordO2 have developed a solid ten flavours overall, which have been FDA-registered, though only five of them have been released – the rest eagerly awaited by their loyal followers and the vape market at large.

Like its namesake, BordO2 remains closely tied to good taste and distinctive flavour. The world of e-liquid flavours is an ocean of creative brilliance, often veering into the absurd, the abstract

and over-the-top when it comes to names or tastes. This is by no means a bad thing. Fantastical flavours and unexpected names have led to some wonderful marketing campaigns and memorable mascots, but some companies, such as this one, benefit from keeping things simple and accessible.

“The taste is what we claim it is,” says Oliver. “There are no differences between what you’ll read on the label and what you’ll taste when you vape it. If we claim it’s a strawberry cake flavour, we won’t rest until we’ve perfectly recreated the sensation.”

BordO2 accomplish this by involving every member of the 40-strong company in the crafting process, which is thorough, consisting of multiple trials before completion.

“We have our own factory, fully automated production lines and we work with many flavourists. Sometimes we’ll develop multiple versions of a single flavour, sometimes we’ll combine existing versions into the final product. We remind ourselves that here in Bordeaux, good produce and taste is important. We grew up surrounded by high standards of taste and marketing.”

As the vaping industry within France grew and evolved, so too did BordO2’s approach. For example, Oliver remembers a time in 2013 when most juices came in 10ml plastic bottles. BordO2 put out a range in 20ml glass bottles with unique shapes, a range with a presentation style described as, “much more fun and sexy” than most available products.

Never content with resting on their laurels, BordO2 are now pushing their latest project, the HOLD-UP range – four flavour concentrates which were released in January. The uniquely-named juices are, in Oliver’s words, “strong, a bit crazy, but classy; eager to break into the market.”

As the face of a global, cosmopolitan industry always mindful of its allies and partners, BordO2 would like to thank Vape Importers Limited, Vape Club and Vaporized.

BEHINDSTREETS

E-cigarettes could significantly improve the lives of the UK’s growing homeless population

Smoking rates are at an all-time low. As of 2016, 15.5% of adults in the UK smoked – down from 17.2% the previous year. For many of us, smoking has all but disappeared from our lives. The smokers crammed into shelters up and down the country seem to dwindle by the day.

However smoking rates among certain groups remain stubbornly high. More than 80% of prisoners in the UK smoke and more than half of people with serious mental illnesses smoke – almost three times the rest of the population.

There is another group that is significantly over-represented in the statistics – the homeless community. Homeless Link, who work directly with people who become homeless in England, put the current figure at a staggering 78%.

Many homeless people report being smokers before they ended up on the streets and the harsh realities of surviving without a home are far from conducive to smoking-cessation. 80% of homeless people self-reported mental health problems, and 45% were diagnosed – a figure twice that of the rest of the population.

The reasons why homeless people smoke are broad and complex. But on a simple level we know that smoking is harmful to physical and mental health and is likely to have a significant impact on rough-sleepers who are already exposed to myriad potential health problems.

A new Canadian study aims to find out whether e-cigarettes could be used to help homeless people stop smoking. Dr Smita Pakhalé, assistant professor at the University of Ottawa’s School of Epidemiology, Public Health and Preventative Medicine will conduct the investigation where 200 homeless people will be enrolled in a randomised controlled trial.

One group will receive traditional Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), such as nicotine patches, gum and inhalers. The other group will use e-cigarettes. All participants will have access to nursing and peer support.

“We’re trying to understand if e-cigarettes can be in our toolbox since they have some features that could be attractive: They can deliver calculated doses of nicotine in an inhaled fashion and secondly, they can give smokers that hand-to-mouth gesture that they crave” Dr. Pakhalé said.

A previous Ottawa public health study revealed that 96% of the homeless population smoked, compared to just 9% of the general population.

“It means the people who smoke today are mostly low-income, indigenous, homeless, poorly educated, marginalised,” Pakhalé said.

If successful, the study could provide a template for NHS stopsmoking services to build upon. However, in England in 2017, budgets for stop-smoking services were cut by 50%, following local authority funding cuts of 59% in 2016 and 39% in 2015, as revealed in Cancer Research UK and ASH’s ‘Feeling the Heat: The Decline of Stop Smoking Services in England’ report.

George Butterworth, Cancer Research UK’s senior policy manager, said:

“National decisions to cut public health funding are having an impact on the ground. A growing number of local areas no longer have treatment available for all smokers that meets the necessary standards.”

Research shows that around half of homeless smokers surveyed had been offered help to stop smoking but did not take up the offer.

72 | VM16
FEATURE

“All commissioned services allow for the provision of a structured evidence based four week quit attempt as part of the 12-week treatment programme that includes setting a quit date and support for behavioural change in conjunction with an electronic cigarette. E-cigarettes are not currently available on prescription but can be purchased by the client to support their quit attempt.”

Two years ago, British American Tobacco’s e-Voke device received approval to be prescribed on the NHS. Unfortunately, production costs and a shift in the market led BAT to scrap the product.

David O’Reilly, group scientific director at BAT, said: “We were never really interested in prescription products. At that time, the medicinal route was the only route to market, but smokers do not see themselves as patients.”

Being able to offer free or low-cost e-cigarettes to the homeless community does pose a significant opportunity for public health.

Linda Bauld, a professor of health policy at Stirling University, said: “I am disappointed not to see at least one type of electronic cigarette available on the NHS to help people quit smoking and which is significantly safer than cigarettes, available for a small prescription charge.”

Until then, the UK’s growing homeless population will have to rely on traditional NRT if they have any chance of quitting cigarettes for good. But maybe if Canada’s study proves that e-cigarettes are an effective tool in helping homeless people quit, our government will see that investment in the short-term can improve lives and reduce the burden on the NHS in years to come.

BHVape’s Johnnie Lovell’s YouTube reviews are racking up hits by the day

There’s barely a month to go before three of the biggest dates in the vaping calendar are finally upon us. Vaper Expo UK will see vapers and vape companies from all over the world descend on the NEC Birmingham for a weekend of juices, mods, builds and competitions.

On B2B day – Friday May 4 – the third annual Vapouround Awards will celebrate the products, companies and individuals that have helped propel vaping to dizzying new heights. Make sure you snap up a ticket before they’re all gone.

Co-hosting is none other than the barmy, bespectacled owner of Bournemouth’s BHVape, the irrepressible Mr Johnnie Lovell. Johnnie is a born entertainer with a huge passion for vaping and a daft sense of humour, so it will come as no surprise that he is more than happy to lark around in front of the camera.

Johnnie has teamed up with Vapouround to present e-liquid reviews on YouTube. He has made

six videos so far and we are pleased to say that the Johnnie you know and love comes through on-screen. ‘Madcap’ would probably be the best word to describe Johnnie’s presenting style and it’s only a matter of time before he reaches YouTube superstardom. Let’s hope he doesn’t forget his humble origins along the way!

After almost two weeks of trying, I finally managed to pin the man down to have a quick chat about the videos and get a glimpse at the goings-on behind the scenes.

“I’ve been off ill for the past 12 days so the videos have taken a backseat. Now the weather has improved –where did all that snow come from? – I’m feeling a lot better. I can’t wait to record some new ones.”

Where does he get all his crazy props from?

“Hahaha, you ain’t seen nothing yet. I’ve got bouncy balls, I’ve got a drum kit, I’ve got a saxophone. There’s an

interesting story to those mannequin hands. Let’s just say that no one wants to stumble upon what looks like a body when they’re putting the bins out.”

Keep an eye on our social media feeds and the BHVape YouTube channel for more from this vape industry frontman.

Vaper Expo UK takes place at the NEC on May 4 – 6.

PUTTING THE FEATURE

There was more to this performance than met the eye

I think I’ve developed something of a reputation for unearthing unusual stories since I started working at Vapouround in August 2017. The three-part streaming film ‘Vape Warz,’ the history of the squonk in our last issue and one or two ideas that didn’t make it past the pitching stage come to mind.

Believe it or not, I rarely have to go out of my way to find these stories as vaping attracts all sort of people from all walks of life, making it fertile ground for interesting stories.

The world of vape trickery is a thriving scene of its own, spread through social media, in vape shops and at expos thanks to the high in vegetable glycerin (high-VG) e-liquidss that make those crazy clouds possible. It was only a matter of time before vape tricks hit the big time.

It doesn’t get much bigger than Simon Cowell’s ‘Got Talent’ franchise famed for its star-making influence, dubiously emotional backstories and sheer competition-obliterating staying power.

Among the auditions at this year’s Pilipinas Got Talent – the Philippines’ equivalent of Britain’s Got Talent – was Joven Olvido an actor and comedian sidelining in vape trickery.

Having opened with a crowd-pleasing acting and comedy routine peppered with more than a little shameless flirting with judge Vice Ganda, it was time for some vape tricks.

He began by laying a canvas of vapour in the air before bursting through it like a butterfly emerging from a

chrysalis, a cheeky gun-finger aimed squarely at Ganda. Then, another thick cloud of vapour appeared, which he jerkily twisted and turned his way through as if sculpting it with his entire body.

Somehow, from that thick mist of vapour, a flawless brightwhite ring appeared. It was at this point that things started to look a little fishy but, hey, give him the benefit of the doubt. I’ve seen many a cloud-chaser do that before.

As the crowd began to piece together what they were seeing, Joven conjured up the centrepiece of the performance – a beautiful heart-shaped ring that hovered in front of hand.

Or at least that’s what he’d have us believe.

Joven then stepped it up a further gear, this time revealing a row of perfectly-formed rings of vapour. How did he do it? Look a tiny bit closer and you may see how. The incredible display was nothing but a façade – classic misdirection, humour and what appeared be a series of brilliant-white pipe cleaners fashioned into various shapes.

Suitably amused and confused, the judges had no choice but to give him a unanimous ‘yes’ and soon the 28-yearold tricycle driver was trending all over social media.

Even with the language barrier, it’s safe to say that the crowd enjoyed the comical performance. Vape tricks may not have technically made the big time but perhaps Joven Olvido has paved the way for a genuinely talented vaper to wow crowds on an international stage in years to come.

HEATED TOBACCO PRODUCTS WHERE DO YOU STAND?

A news story in our last edition which referenced a heated tobacco product proved the most controversial and talked about article we have ever carried.

Some people were very vocal in saying we should never mention heated tobacco while others said they wanted to know the facts about this alternative to smoking, so they could be better informed.

In the wake of this, we sought out several views on the subject to help get a better understanding of how the vaping industry, regulators and other interested bodies felt about the subject.

If you are reading this article, it is highly likely that you are a member of the vaping industry or somebody with an interest both in vaping and in helping educate smokers about ways they can quit traditional tobacco.

If a smoker asked you about heated tobacco products what would you tell them? If they asked you to help them understand the differences between heated tobacco products and vaping products would you be able to give them informed advice?

THIS ARTICLE SETS OUT TO SHOW WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THIS SUBJECT SO THAT YOU CAN BE BETTER INFORMED ON A CURRENT DEVELOPMENT IN THE WIDER ARENA OF PRODUCTS TO HELP OTHERS QUIT SMOKING.

As smoking rates continue to decline, new and innovative products will come onto the market and will continue to do so. Of all the products out there, we believe that e-cigarettes are by far the best alternative and increasingly more and more people are coming around to supporting this view too.

Most if not all Vapouround readers will be aware of the seminal Public Health England (PHE) cigarettes report of 2015 which concluded that, “e-cigarettes are around 95% safer than smoked tobacco and they can help smokers to quit.”

Recently PHE updated that report and you can read about that as it applies to e-cigarettes elsewhere in this issue.

Interestingly the new report specifically addresses heated tobacco products this time round. The 2015 publication was titled, “E-cigarettes: an evidence update,” whereas the new report is called “Evidence review of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products 2018.”

The report said: “Compared with cigarette smoke, heated tobacco

products are likely to expose users and bystanders to lower levels of particulate matter and harmful and potentially harmful compounds. The limited evidence on environmental emissions from use of heated tobacco products suggests that harmful exposure from heated tobacco products is higher than from e-cigarettes, but further evidence is needed to be able to compare products.”

PHE calls for more independent research into heated tobacco products and adds, “Different types of heated tobacco products will have different characteristics and effects, presenting a challenge for research. Research is needed on relative risks of heated tobacco products to users and those around them compared with cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Evidence is needed on appeal of heated tobacco products to smokers and nonsmokers, particularly among youth. Effects on smoking need to be researched, this includes whether they replace or complement cigarettes. Due to co-branding of some products with cigarettes and the more similar sensory profile, findings may be different than for e-cigarettes.”

The report concludes, “The available evidence suggests that heated tobacco products may be considerably less harmful than tobacco cigarettes and more harmful than e-cigarettes.”

It said it was “currently not clear” whether heated tobacco products provided any advantage as an additional potential harm reduction product and went on to say,

“Depending on emerging evidence on their relative risk compared to combustible tobacco and e-cigarettes, regulatory levers such as taxation and accessibility restrictions should be applied to favour the least harmful options alongside continued efforts to encourage and support complete cessation of tobacco use.”

The Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT) recently compared the health risks of heated tobacco products to conventional cigarettes.

It said that exposure to “compounds of concern” in using heat-not-burn tobacco products was reduced compared to that from conventional cigarette smoke and added, “It is likely that there is a reduction in overall risk to health for conventional smokers who switch to heat-not-burn tobacco products.”

80 | VM16 FEATURE

The COT report also reads, “There is a likely reduction in risk for smokers switching to heat-not-burn tobacco products, [but] a risk remains and it would be more beneficial for smokers to quit smoking entirely. A reduction in risk would be expected to be experienced by bystanders where smokers switch to heat-not-burn tobacco products. It is currently not possible to quantify this risk. Heat-not-burn tobacco products are new and there is insufficient data available to enable a full assessment.”

The COT concluded: “Overall…there are toxicological risks from novel heat-not-burn tobacco products though data on impacts to human health is very limited. Compared with the known risks from conventional cigarettes, they are probably less harmful. Even so, smokers would do better to quit entirely.”

Deborah Arnott, chief executive of the anti-smoking health charity Ash, endorsed the view that the healthiest option was to quit tobacco entirely. Quoted in The Guardian newspaper she said, “The COT review is welcome as an independent assessment of tobacco industry evidence on heat-not-burn products. COT concluded that while heat-not-burn products are lower risk than smoking they are not risk-free, so quitting tobacco use completely is still the healthiest option.”

PHE also responded to the COT report. Rosanna O’Connor, director of drugs, alcohol and tobacco said, “We welcome the committee’s report and agree that as yet there is not enough independent evidence on the risks…yet acknowledge that available evidence suggests they are less harmful than smoking but not risk free. Heat-not-burn tobacco products are not the same as e-cigarettes and we are pleased that the committee will soon be looking at e-cigarettes. There is a large amount of evidence that shows vaping is much less harmful than smoking – at least 95% – and we encourage smokers to try e-cigarettes as a way of stopping smoking. People who combine e-cigarettes with support from their local stop smoking service have some of the highest quit success rates.”

US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a March 15 statement that, “tackling tobacco use and cigarette smoking in particular,” was one of the most important actions he could take to advance public health.

His statement said, “Nicotine, while highly addictive, is delivered through products on a continuum of risk, and that in order to successfully address cigarette addiction, we must make it possible for current adult smokers who still seek nicotine to get it from alternative and less harmful sources. To that end, the agency’s regulation of both novel nicotine delivery products such as e-cigarettes and traditional tobacco products will encourage the innovation of less harmful products while still ensuring that all tobacco products are put through an appropriate series of regulatory gates to maximize any public health benefits and minimize their harms. This will be achieved through our ongoing regulatory work to develop several foundational rules, guidances, product standards and other regulations.”

Five days following that statement, that “ongoing work” brought about another press release. On March 20, as this issue was going to press, Dr Gottlieb announced the FDA will investigate the impact flavours have on smokers, while he also acknowledged the role flavours may be playing in encouraging smokers to transition to e-cigarettes.

He said, “I’ve talked to ex-smokers, who’ve told me that they quit cigarettes altogether and that they now vape … [they] told me it was the flavours that helped them make that transition.”

On this side of the Atlantic, novel tobacco products such as heated tobacco products are already being sold in UK vape shops and this trend looks set to continue.

Although Premier E-Cigs do not currently sell such products, owner Pete Savage, told Vapouround the conversation on heated tobacco must happen. “Heat-not-burn could be a way of reaching the most stubborn, addicted smokers who don’t want to switch straight away. It might even be an extra step in smoking cessation: smoking then heat-not-burn then vaping. We’ll have no choice but to talk about heat-not-burn in the coming years. However, we can’t make solid predictions now because there’s just not enough research yet.”

Those businesses who stock them say they are giving customers maximum choice to totally give up smoking traditional cigarettes while other vape shop owners, like The Puffin Hut owner Helen Seward, are less enthusiastic. Helen says while further research is essential, many vape shop owners don’t want an unwelcome comparison made between tobacco and vaping.

“Many in the vaping industry don’t know much about tobacco products in detail but we do know vapour products and we know how much time and effort has gone into making sure people know how different they are. We don’t want this hazy, unwelcome equivalence between tobacco and vaping being made. As a newer product, heat-not-burn hasn’t been subjected to the same scrutiny as e-liquids have. I haven’t seen much on these new products, but we know that some harm is caused and more testing needs to be done. ‘Better than combustible smoking’ isn’t a good enough standard by itself, now that we know how much better vaping is already.”

There are many vapers out there who are dual users and PHE is aware that more needs to be done to get these people totally off smoking.

The latest report said, “All smokers should be supported to stop smoking completely, including ‘dual users’ who smoke and use e-cigarettes. More research is needed into different patterns of e-cigarette use while smoking and their effect on subsequent smoking behaviour to understand how best to move dual users to stop smoking.”

It seems clear that the issue of novel tobacco and heated tobacco products will become increasingly prevalent in the whole arena of providing alternative nicotine delivery systems to smokers.

Whatever your personal views may be on this subject, it is a knowledge area about which you should be aware, especially when it comes to helping smokers make informed decisions to help them quit traditional cigarettes.

LET’S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!

The third annual Vapouround Awards will be the biggest and best yet

The Vapouround Awards have become one of the biggest events in the vaping industry calendar. Voting is now well underway, with vapers and industry professionals voting in their droves. As Vapouround Magazine has grown in stature, so the Awards has grown in prestige. Hundreds of products and individuals are eligible but only the very best will come away from the night with a gong.

This year sees a slew of new faces sponsoring the various categories. But there’ll also be plenty of familiar names returning for another year. Vampire Vape have had a significant presence at the Awards since the very beginning so we’re delighted that they are returning once more as this year’s Awards ceremony sponsors.

Few could have anticipated the massive growth the company would achieve in such a short space of time.

The past 12 months have seen unprecedented expansion, leading to the opening of a new 115,000 square feet site and the addition of 35 new employees.

It’s no wonder Vampire Vape have picked up so many awards themselves over the years and now with more competition than ever before, there’ll be plenty of smaller companies snapping at their heels hoping for a taste of their success.

The main event takes place on 4th of May – the end of B2B Day at May’s Vaper Expo UK. We at Vapouround take our industry very seriously, but we also like to enjoy ourselves. If you’re lucky enough to secure a place, you can expect to experience plenty of laughs as we celebrate the companies and individuals who’ve excelled in the industry over the past year.

The relaxed atmosphere makes the Awards ceremony the perfect occasion to network and build on fledgling business relationships.

As most attendees will have attended B2B Day, you can expect to bump into many friendly faces from the expo itself. Some would argue that we saw far more of Riot Squad’s Hamish Guerinni last year than we’d have liked to, but his antics certainly made the night an unforgettable one.

The ceremony has evolved considerably since its inception back in 2016. We were incredibly proud of our first event, and we’re sure all would agree that we managed to do an even better job the second time around. We are confident that this year’s awards will be better still, thanks to some exciting new additions and a focus on the smaller details.

Huge, high definition screens will display videos of our sponsors, adding to the slick presentation that makes the Vapouround Awards the ‘Oscars’ of the vape industry. It’s

only right that an event of this stature does justice to the industry that we are proud to celebrate.

Many of the features from the early days continue to shape the vape industry’s premier awards ceremony. We like to look after our guests first and foremost, so you can expect to be treated to a delicious and professionally-presented gala dinner.

We are delighted that Johnnie Lovell of BHVape and Ashley Hansen of Strawberry Queen will be hosting the awards again this year. The duo have great on-stage chemistry and a real passion for the vaping industry. Johnnie has been woven further into the fabric of Vapouround this year thanks to his YouTube juice review videos and we look forward to seeing some of that trademark cheeky presenting style in the flesh once again.

Magician Nick Einhorn will be returning for a third year by popular demand. If you haven’t been to the ceremony before, we promise that his magic skills will leave you spellbound. We also look forward to welcoming comedian Ian Irving. And if that wasn’t enough, the Glow Show will wow the crowd with their dazzling human light show.

Charity remains an important part of the Vapouround Awards ceremony. Last year’s event fell under the shadow of the tragic Manchester terrorist attack, where 22 people died and a further 512 people were injured by a bomb explosion at an Ariana Grande concert in the city. Attendees at the event put their hands in their pockets and raised over £4000 for the We Love Manchester Fund, set up by the British Red Cross and Manchester council.

This year’s charity is to be confirmed but we can say that the cause is one very close to our hearts here at Vapouround and we know our friends in the industry will dig deep and help out where they can.

If that hasn’t whet your appetite, head over to our YouTube channel where you’ll find highlights from last year’s ceremony and we’ll see you at the NEC on May 4.

INNOVATE TO THRIVE

The chances are if you’re a juice manufacturer of any size, you’ve already put blood, sweat, tears and countless hours into the development of your juice. With endless flavours of juice available to the consumer, it’s obviously important that you get the flavour just right.

THEN WHAT?

You’ve got your worthy juice flavours, now the real battle begins – introducing them to a crowded and competitive market.

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE SURE YOUR BRAND STANDS OUT FROM THE REST?

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE NOT LOST IN THE MIX?

The answer is simple. INNOVATE.

Last year, there were only 100,000 new vapers in the UK compared to 800,000 in 2014 (Action on Smoking and Health). You and your competitors are fighting over the same consumer pool, which has currently plateaued.

As a brand you need a solution that enables you to stand out, to attract not just current vapers but smokers looking for an alternative to cigarettes, something that enables you to target your brand to the independent retail sector – a brand that is cost-effective, ergonomic and innovative.

EASYSNAP IS THAT BRAND.

Easysnap is a revolutionary packaging and sampling solution for the vape industry, offering you a world of new possibilities.

INNOVATION

THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE

Public Health England and Cancer Research UK’s recent social media campaigns used video to great effect

There’s been a lot of debate in recent months about the impact social media may be having on our lives. Inspired in no small part by the US-based Center for Humane Technology – a group of concerned former Facebook and Google employees – social media users are beginning to take a step back and consider whether the benefits of sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram outweigh the potential detriment to the health of young, developing minds.

But as Nir Eyal, author of bestselling book, “Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products,” pointed out, we should keep concerns about social media in perspective and not make sweeping statements about it being wholly negative to individuals and wider society. People can choose whether or not they engage with social media and when it is used for good, it can be a significant force for change.

Chartbeat provides online businesses with real-time data that helps them understand web visitors and how they consume content. In 2016, the company analysed deep user behaviour across two billion web visits over the course of the month. They discovered that 55% of people spent less than 15 seconds actively on any given page.

98 | VM16
FEATURE

This presents vape industry campaigners and advocates with a problem. How can we hope to fight misinformation and convince detractors that vaping can help smokers when social media users only spend a couple of minutes or even a few seconds engaging with content? Sharing dense academic research and positive news stories will only get us so far. Campaigners are increasingly relying on video to appeal to consumers who may otherwise not engage with the issue.

As we have covered extensively in this edition of Vapouround, Public Health England published a comprehensive e-cigarette evidence review back in February. The review was overwhelmingly positive and the report and news stories relating to it were shared extensively across the major social media platforms.

As part of their campaign, PHE shared a two-and-a-half-minute animation which concisely explained what e-cigarettes are, how they are helping people and how they have contributed to a reduction in smoking. The animation was shared to their 145,000 Twitter followers, 26,000 Facebook followers and 2,000 Instagram followers. It was then retweeted and shared thousands more times, increasing awareness of the research and potentially encouraging smokers to attempt to quit with e-cigarettes.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to social media. Olapic’s Consumer Trust Survey found that 25% of millennials considered Instagram to be their favourite social media outlet, whereas 90% of baby boomers preferred Facebook. And while baby boomers liked to see a mixture of images and written content, 75% of millennials preferred images.

At the time of writing, there are 6,348,850 Instagram posts tagged with #vaping. But the vast majority of vaping Instagrammers share images for fellow vapers who are already engaged with the culture. There are handchecks, e-liquids, mods, coils and vaping memes. It’s the perfect platform for young vapers but these are not the people that Public Health England and Cancer Research UK need to target with their campaigns.

Video is undoubtedly the most attractive format for social media marketers. In fact, videos account for 74% of all online traffic. But all videos are not created equal, nor are all videos suitable for all platforms.

According to Digiday, 85% of Facebook video is watched without sound. Content creators have used this to their advantage by producing videos that feature text captions or narration. This is augmented with audio where users have sound turned on.

Cancer Research UK opted for this approach with their video, ‘The Top 3 Reasons Ex-Smokers Give for Using E-Cigarettes’. The video is only 28 seconds long, so it is easily digestible and very sharable. This makes social media users on the other side of the debate far more likely to listen to what the organisation has so say than if they were being asked to read an entirely textbased article.

There are also costs to consider. This is especially important where publicly-funded organisations like Public Health England are concerned. YouTube is generally cheaper than Facebook but campaigns on the platform may not reach as many people. It’s a matter of weighing the potential reach of each one against the costs incurred and then tailoring video appropriately.

2018 has been a massive year for vaping already, with more and more research and evidence supporting vaping as a safer alternative to smoking being published every month. But this information is useless unless it is delivered in an accessible format that smokers and vape-sceptics are willing to engage with. As PHE and Cancer Research UK have demonstrated, our detractors can be reached over social media - it just takes a little creativity.

CANNABIS TRADES ASSOCIATION

TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF

WORKING WITH ADACT MEDICAL AND THE MHRA TO DRAFT THE ‘CANNABIS PRODUCTS DIRECTIVE’

The December issue of Vapouround Magazine featured an article titled, ‘CBD E-liquid: Harnessing the Elephant in the Room.’ Cannabidiol (CBD) had long been a subject of intense debate, both at Vapouround and in the wider vaping industry. The negative connotations of cannabis and the complexity surrounding CBD advertising legislation meant we had to tread very carefully. The article went through several revisions before it went to press.

The crux of the issue is CBD’s medicinal status. CBD retailers and manufacturers without the requisite medical licence are not legally allowed to advertise the potential medicinal applications of their products. It is up to the customer to do their own research before purchasing CBD e-liquids, edibles, capsules and tinctures.

CBD has countless potential health benefits. It has been proven to be particularly successful as an anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant and anxiolytic, treating symptoms of epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, anxiety and schizophrenia. Vaping has the fastest absorption rate of all the CBD delivery systems, which helps explain the huge growth of the CBD e-liquid market over the past year.

Mike Harlington is chair of the Cannabis Trades Association UK (CTA UK). He is using his experience as a former licensed cannabis grower and researcher for the Home Office to work alongside the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to draft voluntary CBD regulations. Thanks to Mike and the CTA, the UK’s CBD industry has been allowed to flourish and has now grown from around £10m per year to around £30m. It is estimated there are 250,000 CBD users in the UK, some of whom have shared their stories in the national press.

“The MHRA recognises the CTA as a kind of ‘pseudo-regulator,” Mike explains. “They just let us get on with it. Of course, there is always going to be negative press when you have several organisations vying for legalisation, but most people come to us and see that we are a professional and passionate organisation, and the founders and I are committed to ensuring the longevity of the industry as a whole. We’re not a lobby organisation but a trade body working for the interests of the industry and the safety of the public.”

Health supplement retailer Holland & Barrett recently ran a TV advert promoting their CBD oil products. They reported a 37% increase in sales over a four-week period. But while the advert made no medicinal claims, the same could not be said of some of their online marketing. The CTA received complaints from members of the public and at the time of print was due to meet with Holland & Barrett to discuss how they could meet the requirements agreed by the CTA and MHRA.

The CTA maintains a database of certified companies. In order for products to be certified, they must meet the CTA’s high standards and be presented and marketed inline with the voluntary regulations.

“CBD e-liquid is now under control of the MHRA and Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). As long as manufacturers follow the spirit of the TPD, their products should be compliant. We are working to provide a framework to ensure that products are correctly described, tested and reported similar to TPD.”

104 | VM16 FEATURE

E-liquid manufacturers who weathered the TPD storm demonstrated a resilience that could see them succeed in the CBD industry. The current climate resembles the wild west in which vaping found itself before the TPD came into effect. And as more people try to take a slice of the pie, regulatory oversight is essential to ensure that only the best products make it to market.

The CTA has tested some products that turned out to be mostly sugar and contain barely any CBD. Even manufacturers whose hearts are in the right place may struggle to navigate the confusing world of cannabinoids, terpenes and isolates.

“Some CBD e-liquid manufacturers are very passionate, but they lack the professionalism and business sense required to succeed. We’ve found that the ones who went on to thrive in the industry were those who got in touch with us early in the process,” mike says.

The CTA is currently working with the MHRA and e-liquid compliance experts Adact Medical to draft their ‘CPD’ – Cannabis Products Directive. Once completed, the CPD will provide CBD e-liquid manufacturers with guidelines on how to label their juices. The organisation is also compiling a worldwide register of compliant companies.

“We’re hoping that CBD manufacturers will realise that if they’re making good products there’s no reason for them not to sign up. Compliance is the cornerstone of the industry and by working with us companies can gain entry to a market where those without knowledge often make serious mistakes.” The CTA already has over 150 members, including many e-liquid companies.

CBD has historically been met with scepticism from the vaping industry, but it seems that the tide is finally turning thanks to a number of high-profile stories in the media and the tireless work carried out by the CTA.

By working alongside the MHRA, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and TPD compliance experts Adact Medical, the CTA is helping to pave the way for e-liquid companies to capitalise on the CBD ‘green rush’. As with TPD, some companies will be left behind. Thanks to the CTA, only high-quality liquids from reputable companies will rise to the top.

VAPING PODCASTS

HOW THE SELF-PUBLISHING AUDIO PLATFORM HAS TAKEN ROOT IN THE VAPING COMMUNITY

2017 was the year of the podcast. The accessible yet powerful format has been at the cutting edge of independent media, flooding the internet with a swarm of new personalities with fresh, fascinating takes on countless topics. Every topic — no matter how niche or obscure — has its experts, its enthusiasts and its communities.

WHY PODCASTS?

The modern podcast is a democratised, self-starter friendly medium which works as a tool of self-promotion in the hands of ambitious people. It has naturally found a perfect match with the vape industry, which is overflowing with men and women who rose to the top from humble circumstances by mixing their own liquids or taking similar opportunities in a young, fast-growing business.

Key to the rise of the podcast has been its on-the-go versatility. Unlike video-based platforms such as YouTube, certain audio podcasts can be enjoyed everywhere once downloaded onto one’s phone or streamed through an app. Podcasts are favoured by the worker who faces a long commute or hours on their feet. They’ve joined the audiobook as something which can be played in the background during leisure activities for those with limited free time. As we’ve covered in previous issues, vaping is a highly mobile activity with the right equipment and can be done in any weather and almost any circumstances. Whether you’re indoors or out and about... why not increase your knowledge by listening to a show?

An ever-expanding bastion of creativity, unique twists and envelope pushing designs, there are almost as many topics in vaping as there are vapers these days. But, the vape industry (like all industry) doesn’t exist in a vacuum and contemporary podcasts are often compelled to touch on other topics which have a relevant effect on business practices and consumer satisfaction. Politically, many shows and hosts – particularly in America – have a libertarian-leaning bent, given the strained and rocky relationship between regulators and the vape trade. However, if that’s not your thing, there’s still plenty of variety on offer. Everyone in the online vape-sphere has more in common than we remember. All share a sincere and devoted love for vaping and a desire to see it reach its potential as a saving grace for public health.

110 | VM16
FEATURE

Vaping as a business and hobby frequently blurs lines and breaks down pop culture barriers. Vapouround have extensively chronicled and explored the deep versatility of this activity and the range of societies, side projects and subcultures it has.

The ongoing battle for the mainstream acceptance of vaping in media, politics and the public and private sectors is unfolding as a team effort comprising of discussion, debate, cooperation and collaboration between individuals and organisations. On podcast you’ll find just about everyone from the most colourful personalities to renowned public health experts and academics presenting the evidence on vaping and smoking cessation. One outstanding example is California-based Vape Radio, which describes itself as the, “voice of the vape space where you’ll hear from thought leaders and vapreneurs on the ever-evolving e-cig/ vaping industries.”

Described as the world’s largest online community for vapers, Vapers Place hosts VP Live, a call-in show for vapers around the world who can participate in discussions and interact with its hosts in real time.

For those of you who don’t want a general, jack of all trades vape podcast, there are shows for more tightly focused, specialised subjects. One of these is the Smoke Free Radio Network; which hosts The Smokers Show, an outlet for – you guessed it – smoking cessation, with a focus on marketing itself to an audience of smokers and new vapers who may not have kicked the habit yet.

SHOULD I START MY OWN?

If you’re passionate about podcasts and an avid vaper, why not start your own? The community always benefits when a new voice is added to the discussion and everyone’s experiences differ – be they your journey out of smoking, your personal methods for mod maintenance or your pointers for starting your own e-liquid line. Trade shows, conferences, charity events, giveaways, and online forums can now add podcasts to their number as an outlet for community building.

With vaping now a global phenomenon, vapers no longer rely as heavily as they used to on purchasing items locally. International purchases via online stores are the backbone of the trade in the 21st century and podcasts can provide an accessible, informative path to understanding how various vaping markets are doing in this complex world.

The new Draycott shop is the latest addition to the Vapouround lounge family

The Vapouround logo is one of the most recognisable in the business thanks to our growing presence at major vape events all around the world. Several of our staff even sport Vapouround tattoos, enabling them to help spread the word wherever they go, even off-the-clock.

Equally important to our international growth is Vapouround’s representation on the high street and nowhere are we more visible than in the English East Midlands. On March 3, while the country was in the grip of some of the coldest temperatures in recent memory, we opened a Vapouround shop in Draycott – a village six miles east of Derby, the city we proudly call home. The shop is almost equidistant between Derby and the town of Beeston in Nottingham, making it the ideal location for vapers in the surrounding villages who would rather not head into a city centre to pick up vape supplies. In order for vaping to help as many as possible, it must be both accessible and cost-effective and we are proud to say that our Vapouround lounges and shops tick both of those boxes.

While small, the new Draycott shop is fully equipped with the very best mods, liquids, coils and batteries money can buy from some of the biggest names in the business. But the shop is far more

than just a retailer. The close-knit team is incredibly passionate and well-informed, everyone takes their job very seriously. It wouldn’t be Vapouround if they didn’t also have a laugh and a smile along the way.

If you live in the surrounding area or are just passing by, come along to our Draycott store where you’ll find the best offers and friendliest service in the area. We guarantee you’ll leave with a smile on your face.

You’ll find it at 4A Market Street, Draycott, Derby DE72 3NB.

Burton-on-Track

The sixth Vapouround Lounge is open for business

The arrival of a new lounge is always a special occasion for Vapouround, so it was no surprise that so many of the team headed to Burton to celebrate the opening of our sixth lounge. Of course, the prospect of finger food and prosecco may have had something to do with it.

As each site opens, more vapers are welcomed into the Vapouround fold, including curious smokers keen to find out whether e-cigarettes live up to the growing hype.

The doors opened at 9am and we expected the first influx of customers to arrive mid-morning. But before the first hour had passed, Instagrammer and local lad @bigmanvapes came by to check out the new lounge and wish us well. It’s always great to see the thriving online vape community supporting their local high street vape shop. It’s vitally important that lounge staff are both passionate and knowledgeable about vaping, but I was impressed to see just how effortlessly Sean and Jane fielded the many questions thrown at them throughout the day. Sean is also pretty nifty at vape tricks. Every ten minutes or so he’d casually blow a chain of doughnut-like rings. With sweet vapour permeating the room, it’s no wonder the buffet didn’t last very long. As the afternoon rolled on, word got out that a good friend

of Vapouround was to make an appearance. I had not met Vapouround regular Darren Middleton before, but after his arrival I soon realised why he’d made such a positive impression on the team at our flagship lounge in Derby’s town centre.

“After falling ill and being unable to get around as much as before, I began to see less and less of my friends,” said Darren. “At first, vaping was just about quitting smoking. I had a basic cigalike which I’d fill with liquids from a local convenience store. But then I got involved in the vaping community and have since made some great friends. Visiting my friends at the Derby lounge and attending expos has given me a reason to get out-and-about. I also post online reviews and plan on doing more of these in the near future.”

Darren had more motivation than most to quit cigarettes as his doctor told him that smoking made his medical symptoms worse. Like the majority of medical professionals he’s encountered, his doctor was very supportive of his decision to switch to vaping. As the day drew to a close, I reflected on Darren’s story. For many people, vaping is about more than just quitting cigarettes. It’s about being part of a community. Now the vapers of Burton-uponTrent have a vibrant hub that brings them together.

PAIRING ALCOHOL WITH E-LIQUID FOR AN ENHANCED, FLAVOURSOME EXPERIENCE

For better or worse, smoking has long been associated with alcohol consumption and that drunken nicotine itch has lured many a former smoker to relapse late on a Friday night. Thanks to vaping (and especially vape-friendly bars, pubs and clubs) the prospect of falling off the wagon isn’t the danger it once was. Most committed vapers arm themselves with their mod before they leave the house and would no sooner be without it than they would be without their smartphone.

Both cigarettes and alcohol are social lubricants that work in tandem – alcohol relaxes and lowers inhibitions and nicotine works as a stimulant that cuts through some of alcohol’s sedative effects. But as cigar smokers and wine drinkers will attest, there’s something about the flavour of tobacco that enhances the drinki ng experience.

Now, with so many flavours beyond tobacco at our disposal, the doors have been opened for a wide spectrum of alcohol and e-liquid pairings. Here are some of our suggestions for you to try.

120 | VM16 FEATURE
'''

GLENFIDDICH 12-YEAR-OLD SINGLE MALT WHISKY + MANABUSH CHIRICAHUA SUN

Whisky and tobacco have a long association, conjuring up the image of moustachioed gentlemen in mahogany-furnished cigar bars. The tobacco itself is fairly subtle, with sweet and nutty overtones that complement the light Scotch flavour.

CORONA LAGER + VAPEMATE LIME ZINGER

A wedge of lime (or lemon) is almost always offered as a flavour-enhancer when you order Corona or other pale lagers as it gives them an added tarte sharpness. This vape pairing is best enjoyed under the glow of the warm evening sun.

CHENIN BLANC WHITE WINE + DINNER LADY LEMON TART

Sweet Chenin Blancs pair beautifully with lemon and dessert flavours. Dinner Lady’s Lemon Tart ticks both boxes. A dessert combination for the sweet-toothed vaper.

BAILEYS IRISH CREAM + VAPOUROUND TOFFACCINO

Whiskey and cream liqueur plus toffee, cappuccino and hazelnut. It’s a combination that pretty much sells itself, not to mention selling vaping to drinkers who only indulge on special occasions a few times a year.

+ RIOT SQUAD SMASHED APPLE PIE

The beer itself has that sweet, creamy taste that give these Belgian tipples their distinctive character. Beneath that you have the subtle sweetness of orange peel, beautifully synergising with the apple pie flavour of the e-liquid. A great dessert combination.

HENRY WESTONS VINTAGE CIDER + WFFL ALMOND & CARAMEL

Some would say that Starbucks have perfected the recipe with their Caramel Apple Spice but you could do a lot worse than trying this alcohol and e-liquid alternative. A comforting combination for indulgent nights at home.

GUINNESS + DR FOG’S SUPERNOVA

We’re in similar territory to the Baileys and Toffaccino mix here, but this time with added vanilla and the sweet, hoppy taste that Guinness is famed for.

PINO NOIR + RED VAPE HAVANO GOLD

Few former smokers need to be introduced to this combination. For some, red wine and cigarettes are almost inseparable at a certain time of the evening. This version allows you to indulge in plonk and tobacco without having to endure feelings of guilt the followin g morning.

CAPTAIN MORGAN ORIGINAL SPICED GOLDEN RUM + ZAP! JUICE VINTAGE COLA

Ice cold, neat Captain Morgan Spiced is a beautiful drink as it is, but throw some cola flavouring in there and you have a firm favourite that works just as well as a late-evening wind-down at home as a social lubricant for a night out. Rum and Coke without the sugar and caffeine.

Public

Health England’s latest landmark report makes it onto Talk Radio as part of a wider media presence for vaping

Public Health England’s latest evidence update has been everywhere, with the mainstream finally embracing a statistic often cited in vaping circles: that e-cigarettes are at least 95% safer than smoking. Advocates and promoters of the vaping industry have been taking advantage of this invaluable surge of momentum, seeing it as an opportunity to point out that now is the time for e-cigarettes to be pushed as the next great tool for smoking cessation. Increased taxation, public bans and other restrictions are doing their job and bringing smoking rates down, but for an addictive substance like nicotine, replacement and harm reduction remains both the quickest and most effective option.

We’ve seen vaping advance in official government press releases, on broadcast television, online and in various avenues of popular culture over recent months. We can now add talk radio to the growing list of frontiers where vaping has made its presence felt.

On February 6, the story was a feature of Eamonn Holmes’ show on talkRADIO. Holmes dedicated a segment to discussing how far the UK should go in its support for vaping, following PHE’s evidence update. Holmes’ summation of the story emphasised that the findings of King’s College London and Cancer Research UK imply that “vaping poses a fraction of the risk of smoking.”

Joining the show via phone was Doctor Alex Bobak, who was wholly supporting of PHE’s decision, describing it as “great news.” Vaping, according to Doctor Bobak, had managed to grab the attention of smokers in ways that other methods hadn’t, and their use represented a new stage in cessation. He described the developments as exciting.

The doctor also said that “It’s just a tragedy that 79,000 people die every year in the UK from smoking. It’s completely unnecessary. We’ve been doing all we can to try and get people to stop, but this (vaping) is something which really has caught

124 | VM16 FEATURE

smokers’ imaginations. The great thing is: it works and it is almost completely safe. You can’t call it 100% safe, but it’s at least twenty to thirty times safer than smoking.”

Dr Bobak also took irresponsible and inaccurate reporting to task in a powerful monologue and one of the high points of the show. Here it is in full.

“There is so much unbelievable misinformation about the safety of e-cigarettes out there,” he said. “It really is a fraction of the harm of smoking. Apart from the research – which has proved it – every time a smoker puffs a cigarette, they’re taking in 4,000 chemicals, 250 of which are toxic and 80 of which are carcinogenic. When you take in vapour, there’s no smoke at all, and the ingredients of it are a fraction of what you’d get from cigarettes and we know they’re safe. The only things we aren’t absolutely certain about are flavourings and colourings.

“But what we are absolutely sure of is that vaping, short term, is safe. My recommendation as a doctor is that you use e-cigarettes as a tool to stop smoking. That’s what millions of people are now doing around the world. It is a good time for people to stop. I urge people to use the support out there: the NHS is available to help you free of charge and highly-trained stop smoking people are going to help you and want to help you with e-cigarettes.”

No piece of media coverage on vaping is complete without some emphasis on the misgivings people have about them – at least for now. Holmes raised one of the more common concerns, one that has gained significant traction: the idea that it may be a gateway to smoking.

“I’m sure it’s not, quite the reverse,” said Dr Bobak. “The evidence is very clear: people who vape are the people who smoke, it’s not a gateway. We mustn’t be carried away with that argument. The opportunity to improve smoking cessation is there, let’s keep our eyes on the prize because it really is a huge one.”

Holmes’ co-hosts for the day were James Ball and Lianna Brinded, the latter of whom announced she had started her smoking cessation journey five weeks ago thanks to e-cigarettes.

“I’m one of those people that didn’t go for patches or chewing gum, I went for vaping. It has dramatically reduced the amount I’ve been smoking and I now feel it’s worked so well I barely even vape anymore.”

James Ball also spoke glowingly of effects e-cigarettes are having on his formerly smoking friends, claiming that a lot of them have really cut down their habit. “It’s quite heartening to see the NHS being pragmatic on this, backing something that looks much less harmful.”

This exchange marks a refreshing and encouraging change for vaping coverage in media, which for too long has centred around a mix consisting mainly of doomsday exaggeration and tabloid sermonising. Hearing an actual discussion with a hopeful tone should raise our hopes too. The vape industry is sometimes a place where you have to celebrate even the small victories; change is often incremental, testing the most patient of us. But Public Health England’s leap forward puts our message out in new ways every day.

A PUGILISTIC PARTNERSHIP

VAPOUROUND AND LIK SPONSOR ONE OF BRITISH BOXING’S RISING STARS

Burton-born super heavyweight Frazer Clarke has been turning heads – voluntarily or otherwise – since he started boxing at the age of 11. Now 24, with numerous championships under his belt – and more belts to come – he’s got his eyes on Olympic gold. As he fights his way through the world’s best amateur super heavyweights enroute to Tokyo, Frazer will be bearing some very special brand logos.

Vapouround and Lik Juice have become heavy hitters in their own corners of the vaping industry and are proud to be his sponsor. Helping others quit their worst habits and being an example of what one can achieve with a healthy lifestyle is Frazer’s mission. And like so many who achieve this, it didn’t start off easily for him.

“I started boxing because I was at that age where I was going to try everything and shy away from nothing. I did football, I did rugby, I wanted to find my sport, somewhere I’d belong. I boxed because I wanted to lose weight and toughen up. I had a knack for it and the rest is history. I was a big kid – a heavyweight (91 kilograms) by age 13. I can still remember every detail of my first fight. It was both the scariest and most rewarding moment of my life up until that point – it absolutely gripped me, and the sport of boxing hasn’t let go since.”

Even before he became such a respected name in British boxing, Frazer’s love for the sport kept him close to the spotlights. He spent some time working as a security guard at televised boxing matches whist racking up his own wins.

130 | VM16 FEATURE

Just as his calling seized him, Frazer has been grabbing titles and prizes left and right. Now heading into both the Olympics and 2018 Commonwealth Games, Frazer is already decorated. He won the Junior ABA title in 2008, the Three Nations Championship in 2009 and again in 2015, a Commonwealth bronze medal in 2010 and the England Boxing Elite Title in 2015.

As Frazer’s accomplishments stack up, his drive to succeed continues to escalate. Just last year he claimed a silver medal in the European championships as part of a record-setting Team GB, which walked out with more medals than ever in the competition’s near century-long history.

Frazer’s closeness to his fellow boxers has compelled him to make them his biggest inspirations and personal sporting heroes. It’s also helped him put his talents to good use in their training camps. He has been Anthony Joshua’s sparring partner for all 20 of the IBF Heavyweight Champion’s fights.

“AJ and I fought in the amateurs in 2009,” he says, taking a moment to reassert his admiration for the reigning champion.

His promise and special talent didn’t go unnoticed. Frazer now trains under Rob McCracken, MBE. The boxer-turned trainer is famous for tutoring the retired Carl Froch and current champ Joshua. Frazer already sits in august company, with many eager eyes watching.

The tale of the accomplished boxer rising from obscurity to the brightest stages on earth is a classic one, and many of these men and women never forget the places they came from, the people who made it possible and their own desire to give back and inspire that community. Frazer is comfortable and proud of his place as a role model because he appreciates how essential they were for him, and how that lofty position can enable him to help others in the same way. Already a champion of the old and the new, Frazer manages to combine the timeless wisdom of the true athlete with some special knowledge gleaned by an individual’s experience.

“I’d be nowhere without self-belief, every athlete has it. But even that needs company and support and community. Lots of people out there are motivated enough but they don’t have that special person who they can turn to. I was lucky enough to have people in my life who could help out when things were tough and believed even when I didn’t.”

Considering the thriving state of British boxing – mostly spurred by the well-handled careers of former Olympians such as Joshua, Frazer is optimistic about his future. He’s enjoyed a glittering amateur career, studded with championship prestige. When we asked which goals are keeping him in the hunt, he only had one, blunt answer.

“I want an Olympic gold medal. After that, regardless of the result, I’m turning pro and going as far as I can. I’ve already been through two Olympic cycles. I’ve lived and trained with some of the best in the world and can’t explain how much they’ve done for me and what they mean to me. I’m going to do them all proud.”

A man of so many achievements with so much to come, Frazer is a natural ally to a company like Lik or Vapouround.

“AS AN ATHLETE, I WANT TO ASSOCIATE WITH A GROWING BRAND. GROWING BRANDS ARE FILLED WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE HUNGRY AND DETERMINED, THEY WANT TO RISE HIGH AND BE THE BEST.”

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Since the launch of Vapouround in August 2015 our main goal has always been the same, to champion the vaping industry. It is a big responsibility and one we will never shy away from. Vaping is our passion and we let that passion come through in every page of our magazine, on our social media platforms and when we meet people at trade events across the globe. However, we don’t always get things right and in the last issue of our magazine we got it wrong.

We carried a news story which highlighted how tobacco giant Philip Morris had announced they were “trying to give up smoking” in the UK and were spending billions of pounds on alternative products such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products. This story was also carried by the international media and vaping publications both in the UK and abroad, so it was clearly a subject which had found its way onto the international news agenda.

We ran this story to inform our readers about an issue which would be of interest to them. For many it may not have been welcome news, but it is news none the less and we have a duty to inform. Our error was in the way the article was displayed. Many people felt that this was a paid advert and we can see how the layout and design of the article could have given this impression. We can also see how some of the content may have been misinterpreted. This was not an advert. Contrary to claims made by two vaping YouTubers, no money was paid for this article and we were not endorsing heated tobacco products. The editorial content of our magazine is separate from the advertising content and is never paid for. It was never our intention to offend our readers and we offer our sincere apologies for this error on our part. We are passionate

about getting smokers to quit and we strongly believe that the very best way to do this is by vaping. Let us be perfectly clear about this, vaping works. It has changed the lives of smokers all over the world and it will continue to do so. We are not suggesting for a moment and nor would we ever, that vapers should go back to smoking under any circumstances or switch to any tobacco product. We cannot be clearer about this. Vapouround was founded to support the vaping industry and it is an honour to do so. We are proud of our achievements and we are proud to have made so many friends within the global vaping industry and to have established close ties with vape businesses, advocates and industry leaders. We take our responsibility very seriously and when we get things wrong, we are always more than happy to hold our hands up. Contrary to what you may have seen or heard online, Vapouround received no payment from Phillip Morris for this news article and neither of the reviewers that you may have seen online made any attempt to verify or fact-check anything with us. We have supported the vaping industry from the beginning and will always continue to do so. We will always promote the antismoking message at every opportunity while continuing to celebrate and applaud the vaping community across all our platforms.

We will continue to work with advocacy groups and other influential organisations to support the vaping industry both at home and abroad. Sometimes we get things wrong, but we learn from our mistakes and are happy to take this opportunity to set the record straight. We are sorry if we let anyone down or disappointed our readers in any way. We always listen to feedback and are always prepared to hold our hands up when we make a mistake. Interestingly, not just for us but for the wider

134 | VM16 FEATURE

vaping community, this episode has opened various new debates that we feel cannot be ignored. As with any industry, it is important for people to feel that vaping can be trusted. It’s important that the industry meets the standards – many of them self-regulated – that are expected. In the case of some, though not all online reviewers, is this really

the YouTubecase?has, since its inception, given a wonderful platform to people who otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to express themselves so creatively, however this hasn’t always been without a cost. The downside of this is that people, including two reviewers who criticised the story we printed in the last issue, feel it is acceptable to create and stream content that contains absolutely no fact-checking whatsoever. Think about the consequences of that for a second. With absolutely no contact at any point to check the facts and no research undertaken, incorrect, ignorant and often slanderous information can be broadcast and presented as facts. If you’re going to watch a review then surely

there needs to be an element of trust in the reviewer. It’s obviously down to the individual but how do you trust an individual that is happy to either perpetuate, or worse, create a

lie? The reviewers who criticised Vapouround clearly had their own agendas. We carry an

unpaid news story and they can’t wait to rush

to their cameras and microphones to tell the

world how outraged they were. Yet when another vape magazine carried a paid advert

for the same product a short time later this

of importance. It was, to be honest, an eye-opener for us.

The sheer pettiness of the drama created by people simply for attention seeking and subscriber collecting was truly sad. Often the

drama was among themselves. Often it was aimed at companies within the very industry they claim to champion. It was always played

out in public. Does the vaping industry really need that? Does our industry, which has suffered almost constant attacks from outsiders from day one, really need a group of self-appointed keyboard warriors embarrassing it in such a

way? Of course it doesn’t. We will delve further into the online community in our June edition but for now let’s make one thing perfectly clear. Our apology is genuine, sincere and it stands –

two individuals? No – not at all.

was met with silence. The vaping industry works hard to avoid promoting vaping to people under 18. Do the reviewers do this? No. None of their videos carry any form of age restriction on

them.

As for the language contained in their broadcasts as a whole? Nobody at Vapouround would claim to be an angel when

it comes to bad language, but we remember what we are – advocates for the vaping industry. Evidently for the two reviewers’

TOBACCO PLUS EXPO 2018, LAS VEGAS. JANUARY 30 - FEB 1

Over the last year I’ve become somewhat of a veteran of vape expos both domestic and international. This however, was my first time at the Tobacco Plus Expo at the Las Vegas Convention Center and I have to say, this was like no expo I have ever attended.

I’m not going to lie, perhaps the bright lights and excitement of my first visit to Las Vegas got the better of me, as I certainly didn’t get the recommended eight hours sleep the night before. This is something I believe the organisers of the TPE most likely anticipated and I was thrilled to find that the tables in the food area had some rather potent complimentary grape-flavoured energy shots on them. I found this to be an absolute lifesaver when faced with a day of walking and talking.

The TPE showcases cigars, tobacco products, shisha, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) related products and of course vaping, so there was a very diverse range of companies and attendees at the show.

The different industries were separated into different zones, which made finding my way around extremely easy. As I walked about the event, my senses were jumping around between the scent of cigars, shisha, cannabis and vape and this was something I found quite unusual compared to the numerous events I have previously attended.

Being an ex-smoker who happily vapes, I was a little unsure about smelling the cigar and cigarette smoke, however, the organisers clearly knew what they were doing as the ventilation was spot

on. At no point did I feel like I was in an oversized airport smoking lounge but, thankfully, when I returned to my hotel room I could barely notice any smoke smell on my clothes.

It was nice to see a mixture of companies from around the world represented along with your staple American brands such as Charlie’s and Cuttwood. The ever-present Dinner Lady and BO were of course showing off their new products and it was good to see several new companies that I hadn’t seen before.

The atmosphere and general vibe of the show was great. The level of music wasn’t overbearing at all, which made doing business that much better.

For my first TPE I have to say I was very impressed, so much so that I have already started bugging my boss to book me in for the 2019 expo.

Las Vegas....I’ll be back!

After 17 hours of travelling and with two international plane journeys completed, I had hoped that the transition through Jakarta International Airport would be smooth and hassle free. It wasn’t.

We were travelling to the Indonesian Vape Expo 2018 and had three hours to change terminals for the short hop to Yogyakarta International Airport. However the airport signs were so confusing that they tended to lead you in a big circle back to where you started.

Our first big break was when a friendly airport employee pointed to the air-train shuttle station. However getting there involved pushing our way through a jam of two hundred people, all jostling for space to remove baggage from trolleys and get into waiting taxies or cars.

Once again signs, which could only have been designed to confuse, led us on a frustrating tour from one end of Terminal 2 to the other. When we finally checked in and passed through security, it was another 20-minute walk to our gate and we made our flight with just minutes to spare.

The following day, we found ourselves at a pre-show briefing and gala dinner hosted by expo organisers Invex International. Here, they explained the main features of the show in some detail and handed out passes. Luckily there were people on our table who kindly translated the main points into English for us.

The briefing was a nice touch, as were the shuttle buses which took us to and from the venue each day.

As for the show itself there are only three words to describe the experience. Loud. Loud. Loud.

If the annual convention of pneumatic drill manufacturers was being held next door, they would have complained about the noise. By the end of the first day I could hardly speak because I had shouted so much just to make myself heard. The most frequent comment I received from exhibitors was that the music was far too loud and I hope this is addressed for next year.

Don’t get me wrong, this was a good show and I really enjoyed it. It was a little more laid-back than many shows, organisers Invex International were super friendly (especially Amie and Inchan who worked really hard to ensure we were well looked after) and the exhibitors were very happy to chat to us.

Unlike many other shows which start busy and then empty out towards the end, this was the opposite. Crowds only really started to build up in the late afternoon and by 8pm it was really busy. The opening hours both days were 9am until 10pm so these were two very long but interesting days.

I was amazed at how many people wanted to take a selfie with me and my colleague Elise and we were always happy to oblige.

INDONESIAN VAPE EXPO 2018 - YOGYAKARTA - FEBRUARY 3 & 4
EVENTS

While we may have been on the other side of the world, the Vapouround brand was instantly recognised by many, which is always great to see.

During the two days there were half a dozen or so stilt-walking clowns walking around the venue. I’m not totally sure what the idea was here but it certainly added a touch of colour to the event. Main sponsors Chubby Gorilla must have been thrilled with their exposure. Not only was their huge stand right in the centre of the hall but their branding was absolutely everywhere both inside and outside the exhibition hall.

The most memorable part of the show for me was meeting the guys from Barista Brew Co. who proved so popular that their entire stock of e-liquid sold out part way through the first day. They had planned to bring much more juice with them but part of their supply got held up by customs, which is always a problem with international vape events.

Wes, Joe and the team are so passionate about the vape industry and they ensured that everyone who left their stand went away happy and with a smile on their face.

This show was a mix of local and national vape-related businesses with some big international names also in attendance.

It was billed as an ‘urban’ event rather than just a vape event and there was a section of the show devoted to selling ‘urban’ clothing and street wear including t-shirts, footwear and accessories. I felt that this idea worked very well indeed.

Food and drink can often be a little hit and miss at vape events but not at this show. There was a huge food court directly outside the venue where you could get a wide selection of tasty meals and snacks from dozens of catering trucks.

I enjoyed my first visit to Indonesia and it was great to experience the Indonesian vape scene first hand. I can’t wait to come back but I will be undoubtedly take ear protection with me next time.

ECC CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 9 - 11

It was therefore somewhat of a surprise when handed my list for the first six months of this year to find I’d be starting off with a visit to the Electronic Cigarette Convention (ECC) in Ontario, California.

It’s an event I’ve visited once before in December 2016 and I was interested to see how it had evolved. It was also a bonus to be able to head off to Heathrow for a transatlantic flight and a brief escape from the freezing British winter.

The ECC is a show that I’d previously not been known to entirely make my mind up about. I’m not sure if it was reports of the show before I’d visited, but in December 2016 I’d been expecting something almost mythically vast. Because of this hype I had left myself open to being underwhelmed and sure enough, this is how I felt even though it was a decent show. This time around I’d decided to lower my expectations to a more reasonable level to see where that led and my overall impressions were positive.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and salt-based nicotine certainly had a strong presence at the expo. It was nice to see a mix of industry stalwarts such as Buckshot Vapours and Cosmic Fog exhibiting alongside newer up and coming and exciting brands such as IVG. As we are all aware, the vaping industry in the USA has faced many

challenges over the years.

It was inspiring to meet people like Scott and Kevin from Puff Labs who seem to be not only facing the challenges with a great deal of enthusiasm but are producing some amazing juice at the same time.

It’s also fair to say that I came across something I’d never seen before – whether through my own naivety or lack of attention –and that was CBD for pets. I’m not entirely sure how that works. My own dog seems to labour under the impression that he’s a purebred wolf and has an uncanny ability to sense anything added to his food. I’m sure any attempt to modify it with CBD would leave that wolf gagging. Personally, I’m a great advocate of CBD for humans but the jury is out on pets.

My overall impressions of ECC, as I said before, were positive. Whether it was through my differing levels of expectations or simply because of the differences in the two shows, I felt that this was an improvement on my previous visit.

It’s back to Europe for a little while for me now but I’m sure I’ll be back at the ECC at some point – and I will certainly look forward to it.

FUSION VAPE EXPO - NOTTINGHAM - FEBRUARY 24

We proceeded to the venue with the expectation of a ram packed hall, on arrival we were greeted with a coffee and bacon cob (bun/ roll/bap) which is by far one of the best ways to start an event! The hall was filled with prospective vendors looking to sell some products and introduce their brands to a wider audience.

The event started at 12pm which made for a much more relaxed day for vendors and the public alike. This allowed time to set without having to rush for an early morning start so served to ensure the show stress levels were kept to a minimum.

Once setup the crowds started coming in and this show began to feel more like a community event with conversations between vendors and the public being a lot lengthier than what would usually be expected at an expo. Throughout the event we really enjoyed talking to members of the public about their vaping journey and what flavours and devices get them excited. Relaxed and informal are the words I would use to best describe the Fusion Vape Expo experience.

In conversation, vendors mentioned how they had done really well at the show and had a brilliant time. Based in Hucknall, Nottingham, Fusion Vape Expo brings the excitement of a large expo and their national and inter-national brands to the

East Midlands on a smaller and much more intimate scale. We spent much of the day talking with vendors and the public and while this sort of event isn’t necessarily aimed for networking, the nature of the venue (with vendors placed rather close together) makes for a good opportunity to network with those all around you and build up relationships in the process.

Throughout the day the public were introduced to a number of brands offering juice, mods and accessories. One popular stand was Ohm Boys’, they bought to the show one of their amazing flavours ‘Cosmic Coffee’ which was really fantastic. These guys have nailed the coffee flavour for sure.

Halfway through the event, Fusion started their crowd giveaway and raffle. The crowds gathered at the front of the hall where raffle numbers were shouted out along with freebies being thrown into the crowd. Some members of the crowd certainly walked away with a very reasonable amount of juices.

Overall the event was highly enjoyable. It’s great to see in the sub-urban areas of the country, an event to further the inclusivity of the vape industry and Vapouround will be looking forward to the next Fusion Vape Expo.

PURE VAPE 2018. MVG MUSEUM, MUNICH. MARCH 3 - 4

After cancelled trains and delayed flights caused by the “Beast from the East,” we finally made it to Munich’s very complicated airport.

After finding our way out to the snowy weather, we got a taxi to our hotel and just had time for a quick meal before bed.

It was an early start for us on Saturday as we set off for the show so that everything was ready in time for the 9am start for the expo. We had time to collect our badges and even had a quick wander around the venue before the doors opened and it looked like it was going to be a good event.

Pure Vape was held at the MVG Museum in Munich, a very original venue to hold a vape expo at and it certainly ensured that this stood out from other shows.

The booths were carefully placed in between old machinery that gave the whole thing a vintage touch. It was a two-day event, which was open for B2B in the mornings and consumers in the afternoons.

It was a small show but there were a few familiar faces, but mostly new, and most of them were from German companies. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of loud music on the B2B hours, which is something many other shows should also adopt in my view.

It was lovely to be able to talk to people without losing my voice after the first couple of hours and I was also surprised by the

lack of vape models and promo girls. I think I may have seen just one during the entire time I was there.

Throughout the show, there was always something happening on the stage including vape tricks performed by Zac and Isaac from VGOD, DJ guests and podium discussions with Dr Heino Stover and Dr Erich Russi. The show was very well organised and during the B2C hours the show was packed with enthusiastic vapers. Being in a foreign country, you always worry about the language barrier, but I’m ashamed to say I didn’t even have to try and speak my very bad German because everyone spoke perfect English.

We also made the most of the amazing food trucks that were strategically placed outside the venue. The burgers, Chinese food and vegetarian wraps all looked incredible and the only downside was they only accepted cash, so I missed out on the first day but came prepared on the second day.

This was a great vape show and despite it being a small, I would return if given the chance.

Opening the box, I thought Vaporesso had resent me the Revenger kit. But on closer inspection, this is the upgrade. Changes to the appearance are very minimal other than the function buttons on the front of the device which have been replaced with a touch screen.

Don’t worry. The device has an automated lock function to prevent unwanted alterations. All other aspects such as size and shape are exactly the same to its predecessor, which I’m happy about as the design of the revenger is very slick.

The design still features the in-mould labelling (IML) casing on the front, which is great for screen clarity but paired with the touch screen system it has some problems. Firstly, the screen is prone to smudges, which is a pain when you must touch it to use it. Secondly, in darker settings the touch screen indicators are barely visible.

Another big change that comes with the Revenger X is the vibration. Every touch of the screen comes with a subtle buzz like that of a phone. While this seems like an unnecessary addition, it works perfectly with the touch screen so there’s no second guessing on the amounts of presses you have done. This vibration is adjustable in an eight-tier setting.

Enough about looks, the Revenger has an upgrade. It now comes with the upgraded OMNI board 2.2, which sees certain imperfections that were found with the Revenger kit being patched. The screen layout and menu pre-set are still identical to the Revenger kit too, featuring all the same output modes which are great but extra system set menus.

The wattage power is responsive and heats up very close to the 220W without glitches. To get the most out of this, power tanks other than the NRG mini would need to be used. This is easily done due to the wide 28mm surface area around the 510 pin at the top.

Paired with the NRG mini tank, the kit provides impressive flavours with a variety of coils at disposal. The tank provides good vapour with only a slight resistance due to the long airflow vents on the base of the tank.

Overall the kit is excellent, although very similar to the Revenger kit. The improvements made are subtle but definitely important if you like to ramp up the wattage on the mod as there is now no delay from the chipset trying to catch up. I am personally impartial to the interface changes and the new touch screen – some prefer buttons, some like touch screens – that doesn’t

a brilliant

2.0.

BECOMING FULLY IMMERSIVE WITH ITS HIGH DEFINITION SCREEN.

Let me start by saying this is another beautiful design from SMOK. They have nailed this kit leaving behind the gimmicks and the awkward shapes.

The X-Priv is a palm-sized device with a whopping two-inch HD screen. This device comes in a gold finish with a black glass front. The battery plate houses two 18650 batteries and has a navy finish with a wire effect. This device boasts a 510 connector and a micro-USB port.

The button layout on the X-Priv is a new format. Placed in the bottom right corner on the front of the device are the +/- buttons and a lateral fire button which maximises the space for the large screen and makes the mod very comfortable in hand.

At first glance at the screen, the layout is already promising. Spacious, clear and the only shown elements are important for the user’s day-to-day vaping such as ohm reading, mode pre-set and a live battery feed. The screen has a very immersive glow and this follows on as you delve into the functions.

SMOK have further simplified the interface of the menu by cleaning up a lengthy process creating a simple multi-step system. The menu features a bottom bar for the main categories and this cycles automatically when sub category options are selected or skipped.

The main options for the device are variable wattage, which can ramp up an impressive 225W. It also comes in a memory mode for quick hardware switches and sudden temptations for a fuller puff. The device also features three temperature modes perfect for those custom builds or if you want to home in on the flavour of your chosen atomiser. There are Ti/Ni/Ss modes making the device very versatile. This device also has menu functions like the puff counter and a customisable colour scheme. These menus help to monitor your vaping and to customise your screen theme.

The X-Priv kit comes with the TFV12 Prince tank and they match beautifully, giving a strong vape with thick clouds. The tank has a huge variable wattage and comes with coils with a resistance of 0.12 or 0.4 ohms giving a versatility that will suit any wattage. Paired together the X-Priv kit delivers fantastic taste and good news if you’re a cloud chaser, the clouds are huge.

Overall, I would say this is the best device SMOK has manufactured since the Alien. Its simple interface and luxurious design makes it a perfect match for any advanced vaper or anyone looking to dive into advanced vaping.

REVIEW BY JAMES PARNELL
USABILITY DESIGN BUILD QUALITY 10/10 10/10 10/10 REVIEWS

Atop my mod is the beautiful new TFV12 Baby Prince Tank. On appearance it looks like the TFV12 Prince Tank has entered the shrinking device from Willy Wonka. The tank is much more than just a smaller version – it’s a combination of the prince and the ever popular TFV8 baby beast. It even takes the V8 coils.

The tank comes with a bulb glass that takes the 2ml tank to a 4.5ml, if you want to upgrade from the standard glass that is. The mod looks like a prince with all the royal engravings of its big brother and features the same patented locking system on its top fill design. The combination of size and coils are the only throwback to the baby beast but these are the elements that still to this day make it a good, reliable tank.

The V8 coils that come with the tank have also had an upgrade. One coil type is the V8 Baby T12 that illuminates when power travels through the coil, lighting the tank up while you vape. Another is the new V8 baby mesh coil which swaps wire coils for a mesh, in my opinion giving a more reliable and smooth vaping experience.

Vaping on this device is an amazing experience, the flavour is as rich as it is with the prince tank. The base of the tank has two wide airflow vents which massively improves the airflow providing huge clouds for such a small tank. With the coils provided in the box, the tank has a resistance of 0.4ohms with the Q4 coil right down to 0.15ohms from the mesh coil, but there are plenty of V8 coils that are between.

Overall, it’s a cracking little tank that’s perfect for a wide range of devices, although it may look strange on a larger device. The performance from the TFV12 baby prince is exceptional. If you’re a fan of the old TVF8 baby beast or the new TFV12 prince tank, get this tank, it’s bang in the middle!

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK...

I have here a Rev GTS mod. The device has a solid build, comprising a solid plastic frame with a metal trim and a magnetic battery case. The GTS has a great size and rounded corners for supreme in-hand comfort. The position of the fire button makes the mod efficient and ergonomic. The mod is also deep enough to house a variety of tank sizes, which is a bonus.

The outer design has a sports car appeal with a car pedal fire button and three menu buttons. The device takes two 18650 batteries and which sit in a snug-fit plastic battery housing. The look of the outer shell as a whole is clean and sporty.

When the screen is on the GTS has a HD screen with a cool variety of car dashboard themed layouts. The display is fresh and totally unique, featuring an innovative revometer style wattage and puff timer interface. This mod has so many fine details that rightfully earn the name Rev. This mod is most certainly a car enthusiast’s dream.

The interface is very straightforward with a listed menu. This menu is stacked with customisable options for the display and device settings such as display modes and time settings. The device also has a factory reset feature if you get in a pickle. The GTS output settings are VT modes (SS, Ti1, Ni200), which all have degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius option; there is also TCR memory mode for stocking up custom modes, and finally the trusty power/wattage mode. It also features a bypass mode and a handy customisable preheat mode which can help prevent dry burn.

The GTS is run on a Venom v1.1 chipset, which I hadn’t come across until now. It is a very responsive chipset that has an excellent reading. After using the mod extensively I could tell that it is one of the most reliable mods I have ever used. It is capable of firmware upgrades, which is nice in this ever-changing market. The chip can also support customised modes.

Overall, the vape production from a variety of tanks that I paired with this mod is excellent and the pull is uninterrupted. It gives you that glitch-free experience that we all want. It’s a simple device that is easy to understand and navigate. If you can, I advise you give one of these a go, you won’t regret it.

assembled in China. It contains many different features and is incredibly user friendly and easy to set up.

It’s a true convection vaporiser, meaning a better quality of vape as well as more thorough heating of the contents within the chamber. This does unfortunately take a bit of a toll on the battery life. The Crater 420 however utilises a USB port and can be charged quickly via any compatible outlet.

The device itself feels great to use. The top portion of the unit is attached to the bottom via magnets and easily detaches revealing the heating chamber, which is very generously sized. There’s a single button at the front of the bottom which is used to turn the device on or off in five clicks, or to change the heating temperature.

There are four different heat settings available to use on the Crater 420 depending on how warm you like your vaping experience. You can easily switch between them by clicking the button twice. There’s an LED above the chamber that changes colour depending which setting you’re on.

Speaking of temperature, my favourite feature of the Crater is how quickly the chamber heats up. Having used other vaporisers in the past that take minutes to heat up, the 420 manages to do so in an impressive 30 seconds. A real gamechanger for me personally.

The mouthpiece is well-designed, swivelling away from the device when you want to use it, and pushes back to be flush against the top of the device when not in use.

The Crater is a versatile device fit for dry herbs, waxes and oils – a real bonus for a small portable device like this.

In the box you also receive some spare mouthpieces, several tools for cleaning the chamber, spare screens and a couple of wax/oil buckets – everything you need to keep your Crater running for a good amount of time.

My personal experience with the Crater 420 was incredible. It’s so easy to use, easy to set up and vapes fantastically. I’m truly amazed with the amount of features Crater have managed to cram into a small, portable vaporiser

I honestly can’t recommend this device enough. It’s suitable for experienced vapers or anyone looking to get into the world of dry herb vaporisers. Absolute perfection, in my opinion.

TWO RDA’S, THREE POTENTIAL

FLAVOURS!

Looking at this device my immediate impression was how big it seemed. But after using the device for an hour, the size of the device becomes less important. This is rather aesthetically pleasing, housing dual 18650 batteries inside two tubes. The device looks like two glued mechanical tube mod. In-between the tubes the single colour screen and controls are housed. The feature of the device that stands out the most would certainly be the two build decks separated on-top, with separate juice tanks beneath.

Functionality wise, the device offers a lot of options with all the regular settings you would expect from a regulated device. However, this mod offers the added functionality of an extra deck. These have independent controls, making it easier to vape different sets of coils on each, in conjunction with the ability to choose to disable aside, to either extend your battery life in a power outage or to just make use of one side. The dual juice tanks for each independent side also adds options, enabling the user to use two juices at the same time for flavour mixing.

With built-in battery charging, independent wattage control and multiple temperature controls this device is much more user-friendly and could be a brilliant choice for a novice wanting a higher end cloud production machine.

Ergonomically this device has the appearance of an uncomfortable mod with the weight being quite heavy and overall size being large, however it seems to fit the hand reasonably well. The centre placed firing button is far easier to use than a tube mech mod with a push rod style firing mechanism. Although the device isn’t perfect in this area, it makes drastic improvements over similar devices.

Included in this kit is everything you need to get started minus the 18650 batteries. It comes with four coils (0.3ohms), 12 silicone rings, a wrench, eight screws, organic cotton and the all-important user manual.

This device offers a range of great features and an aesthetically impressive look. After regular use it’s clear this is an absolute cloud beast like a mechanical mod with all the advantages of a regulated device. The usability of the device makes it a good choice for any vaper looking for big clouds. This device would be perfect for any user from the novice vaper with a small understanding of building coils right up to the professionals. Tesla has really hit a home run on this one.

THE COLT MINI KIT IS HERE, AND IT LOOKS FANTASTIC!

The kit comes with the 80W colt mini and an H8 mini tank. The mod is built from a zinc alloy, so it is quite heavy for its small size. The device comes with a seven-colour finish on both mod and tank. The mod has a small screen with a compact layout. Each button on the colt is of a reasonable size and has a nice press. The mod has a maximum wattage of 80W, powered by a compact internal 2000mAh battery. This is charged via the micro-USB port on the right face. The kit looks very impressive with a gun grip feel from the markings on the sides of the mod and the 2ml tank on the top, both regimented in colour.

The H8 mini tank has a solid construct. The top fill design has a slideto-open top that reveals the drip hole. I like the design but due to the tank being small it can make it awkward to fill with larger bottles. The tank also features large airflow holes on the base making for optimum airflow, carrying the flavour better. The tank also has a wide-bore mouth tip to really get the most out of the flavour.

Paired together, the mod and the tank work beautifully giving a strong, steady power output and a consistent, great flavour. The performance of the device is controllable with the various output modes. This makes it a very durable kit. The taste modes on the mod are very helpful to reach full flavour potential of the juice, this also makes the mod more adaptable to other tanks that are capable of a higher instant wattage output, if you like to play with wattage ranges.

Overall the kit is smart and compact, perfect for travelling or day-today vaping. I am very impressed with the flavour output of this kit. The wattage output is impressive for the size, but although the device is small the in-hand, the comfort is nice and the button placements are ergonomic. The only thing I would improve on is the slide-to-open tank. I think the cap needs around 4mm extra to allow more room for bigger bottles to fill the tank.

JUICE REVIE W S

PASSION

This e-liquid has a sweet fruity scent with a hint of alcohol. It smells just like a fruit cocktail. On the inhale the vape gives a light fruity taste that comes with a smooth hit. The exhale develops a very tasty passionfruit taste. It develops an alcohollike edge which pushes this to taste just like a porn star martini. The flavour also develops a very light cooling which just adds that special touch.

The aftertaste has more of a liquorice taste which personally I am not keen on but I know many that would love it.

FEAR

Fear smells absolutely great. It has a mixed scent of grapefruit and lime.

On the inhale a sweet lime essence touches the tongue with a sweet throat hit that has a slight cooling agent in it.

The exhale begins with the light coolant undertone helping a sweet grapefruit ascend. This then takes a citrus turn and a lime flavour takes the limelight (excuse the pun). This flavour rollercoaster is assisted by a light absinth undertone. This is a really different vape and I would advise all to give it a try.

LOVE

This e-liquid has a light raspberry scent with a clear minty undertone.

On the inhale the vape produces a cold menthol and smooth hit. The cloud production on the mixed range is incredible. The raspberry flavour is the first to come through. It’s a rich flavour and carries a light undertone of mint leaves. This literally gives the experience of a mojito cocktail.

The exhale leave a sweet note on the tongue and a cold sensation in the throat. This is a very impressive vape and one perfect for the adventurous vaper.

WATERMELON RUSH

Watermelon Rush is a mouthwatering blend of sweet, juicy watermelon and ripe strawberries. The initial inhale is filled with the refreshing melon flavour we all know and love, and it’s soon joined by a sweet and superbly accurate strawberry that really ties the juice together, lifting it to another level of fruitiness.

There’s also an impressive amount of cloud on display with this juice as well, and I found it held up really nicely at high wattages, filling up rooms in seconds with a watermelon haze.

To sum up, Watermelon Rush is 100% a juice that I personally could vape all day, all month, all year.

VERDICT – STRAWBERRY LIMEADE

This juice has a very sweet limeade smell. There is a fruity edge but the lime scent is too overpowering to tell.

On inhale the hit is very cool and fairly smooth, there is a slight harsh edge but that just adds to the citrusy experience. It starts lightly with the lime and gives a tease of strawberry.

On the exhale the lime flavour strengthens and lasts to the absolute end. The strawberry is more of a subtle undertone that comes and goes throughout the vape. On occasion a slightly fizzy sensation is evident too. It’s a nice juice with a slight cold edge.

PATROL

Patrol definitely brings something unique to the table. I love coffee, and I love doughnuts. Turns out I love them together! The first thing to mention is that this juice smells amazing. I defy anyone with a sweet tooth to smell this liquid and not crave sugary things. Thankfully it tastes as good as it smells. Initially a strong yet sweet coffee flavour hugs your tastebuds, filling you with a warm and satisfying feeling, almost like you’re drinking it from a mug. Then you get the glazed donut....the sugary treat that is the perfect partner to the creamy coffee. I love Patrol, especially first thing in the morning with breakfast. I’m not sure if I’d want to vape it all day long, I prefer to savour it and keep it back for those moments when you need a little perk up from your vape. Pure satisfaction.

Scarlett Dream

A uniquely sweet strawberry flavour smacks you in the face as soon as you puff on this juice. It’s very quickly joined by a cooling undertone that I’ve come to expect and very much enjoy from Malaysian e-liquids. The strawberry flavour is absolutely bang on – ripe and sugary sweet fruit that’s ever so moreish. Scarlett Dream is without a doubt an all day vape for me, it’s got the perfect amount of ice in it that makes it ridiculously refreshing.

Avocado Dream

And now for something completely unique, an avocado-based juice. I suppose with the current popularity of avocado it was only a matter of time. I have to say, this combination of avocado, whipped cream and dark chocolate really works. The initial flavour is the rich dark chocolate, with the cream taking the edge off the bitterness. The aftertaste leaves you with a slight taste of the creamy avocado on your tongue. As bizarre as it sounds it’s an interesting mish-mash of flavours that is kind of addictive. I couldn’t stop going back to vape it repeatedly to try and pick out the avocado flavour. I must give this juice full marks for the originality of it alone. The fact that it tastes awesome is a definite bonus.

Purple Dream

Another refreshing, fruity juice on display here, Purple Dream is a grape flavour, once again featuring the classic Malaysian e-liquid iciness. The grape flavouring is delightfully sweet and fruity, more of an authentic flavour than I’m used to from similar flavours. Grape is one of those fruits that I think lends itself perfectly to a bit of coldness and once again, Dream Juice have delivered a refreshing juice that’s another all day vape contender. I still prefer the strawberry though!

Blue Raspberry

This e-liquid is a distinct and delicious blue raspberry which comes across as rather muted and plain. Despite this, I felt that the simple nature of this flavour added to the whole appeal of the juice itself. This is because the flavour is not overly strong nor overwhelming, but more calm and subdued, making it ideal for when you get sick and tired from vaping on a very potent flavour and fancy something a little more plain.

That said, there was still a pleasant and fruity element when vaping and the blue raspberry really showed itself right on the exhale. It was a good flavour but could come across as a little lacklustre for vapers who are die hard full flavour fans. Personally, I found that the mildness to this juice made it easier to vape as at no point did I feel like it got sickly.

Watermelon Gummy

As the name suggests, this flavour is highly reminiscent of a chewy watermelon candy complete with a sweet and sour twist. Even the scent of this e-liquid is very alluring. I am a big fan of watermelon flavours if they are done right and Emoji Liquids have most certainly got it bang on with this juice. There have been countless watermelon flavours that I have tried, with many being overly strong or artificial. Whilst this juice doesn’t taste identical to a real watermelon, it does taste like watermelon candy.

The inhale was a mostly sweet and soft touch of sugary watermelon and the exhale featured a more prominent sourness that rounded off the flavour perfectly. It was smooth and left a tantalising aroma in the room when I exhaled. Again, this juice was also very easy to vape and didn’t leave an unattractive aftertaste.

Peach Rings

The whole sub-genre of peach e-liquids is a very diverse and popular set of concoctions. There are peach yoghurt flavours, peach lemonade flavours, peaches and cream, basically any combination you could imagine. However, when I first tried this e-liquid, to say I was impressed would be an understatement. The flavour really reminded me of a Haribo peach ring candy. I could almost imagine that I was actually eating one. That is a sure sign that an e-liquid is very well made and is accurate to its description. This e-liquid was quite flavourful, it made my mouth water and was astoundingly realistic. My only slight drawback was a subtle bitter aftertaste, that soon went away as I got used to the flavour. Overall, this juice would have to be my favourite from this line due to its incredible likeness to Haribo peaches and the fact it was a very pleasant to vape.

R

The RETROSPEX juices are a great looking brand in the style of 3D glasses graphics. I wondered if the packaging was three dimensional when looking at it in the retro red and blue glasses. Great branding and great juice – I would suggest checking these guys out at your next expo or local shop.

This juice is a straight up cola. The scent is so strong that it is instantly recognisable, I hope the flavour is as powerful.

On the inhale, the taste of a light cola brushes the tongue, but wait, it has a twist. The cola flavour is one that mimics a quality red branded soft drink that we all know. The juice develops a cherry overtone that really perfects the cola. The cherry taste is sweet and fruity and blends perfectly with the sugary beverage flavour. It also carries a very light coolant, but this is almost unnoticed through a tank. Overall the taste is great and the flavour is bang on. The only change I would recommend for this juice is adding a fizzy sherbet sensation to really enforce a beverage characteristic.

L

This juice has a sweet fragrance that’s like a light and sweet strawberry candy with a cherry overtone. It’s very appealing. The first flavour that comes to the taste buds is a light powdery bubble gum. The flavour develops once the reasonably thick cloud is being exhaled. The juice develops a stronger cherry bubble gum taste. This develops a sweet banana flavour to finish the juice off. This juice gives that nostalgic feel of 90s pink bubble gum that blew the biggest bubbles. The aftertaste is long lasting and leaves a sweet moreish candy note on the tongue. Overall the juice is a great flavour and would probably be the first bubble gum vape that I could vape all day long. I would advise this juice for those of you who search for the good candy vapes. Bravo!

STRAWBERRY

This Hangsen juice simply labelled strawberry offers a basic flavour to those wanting decent cloud production from a 70/30 juice without the complex ingredients. The first impression from this juice is the scent, or rather the lack thereof. Offering little in the way of the strong scent of other juices you may believe this to be the same in the flavour profile. On the inhale the juice starts with the expected strawberry flavour backed with some sweetness. The strawberry at this point is soft and evenly split between a strawberry and the sweeter flavour behind. Moving onto the exhale, the juice strengthens in flavour. The exhale tastes much more like a strawberry sweet rather than a fresh strawberry. Post-vape there isn’t much in the way of an aftertaste making this juice nice for the casual vaper.

ICE MINT

The scent of this juice makes expectations clear, if the name hadn’t already. The only smell offered is a strong menthol, that begins to clear the airways as it hits. The inhale continues as expected with menthol, however at this point an undertone of sweetener becomes clear, like a breath mint. The exhale carries an extra flavour to the mix, adding a hint of spearmint which overall creates a minty hardboiled candy flavour. Post-vape the spearmint fades back out, leaving only the menthol and

FRUIT MIX

The name of this juice makes it easy to understand what flavour to expect. The scent of this juice offers more than others from the same manufacturer, however it still isn’t comparable to other juice makers. The scent’s strongest smell is a mix of strawberry, banana and green apple, all of very similar strengths. On the inhale this juice offers predominantly a banana and apple mix creating the base for the rest of this juice’s flavour. On the exhale, all the flavours begin to kick-in harder and with added fruits like green grape, pineapple and strawberry creating a sweet mix on the tongue. Post-vape the apple and banana linger for a short while creating a simple yet tasty juice.

BLUEBERRY

Another simple flavour from Hangsen. This juice offers a low in strength scent, like that of a packet of fresh, chilled blueberries. Although the scent may suggest a fresh fruit flavour, the inhale isn’t quite so. It starts off with the fresh blueberry flavour however a sweetness is added into the mix creating a flavour that closely resembles candy. This theme continues into the exhale where the sweetness surpasses the blueberry in strength. Post-vape the blueberry flavour remains while the sweetness disappears making this juice more pleasant to vape for longer.

HS MENTHOL SENSATION

This juice is a little different to that was expected. Starting with the scent. The juice offers a mix of spearmint and menthol, like mouthwash or toothpaste, however this theme doesn’t remain throughout. The inhale is where the spearmint begins, along with an undertone of menthol and sweetener. This flavour strongly resembles a popular strong mint sweet. Moving onto the exhale, the menthol kicksin harder above the spearmint changing the dynamic of the juice. A pleasant fresh clean minty flavour becomes obvious at this point. Post-vape all flavours diminish leaving behind a cool, clean sensation in the mouth, much like fresh breath.

R & B SLUSH

With the classic childhood flavour of mixed red and blue slushy, this juice was always going to bring a smile to my face. The sweet raspberry and blueberry flavours combine to give a syrupy fruit flavour that’s as nostalgic as it is addictive. As moreish as this liquid is I really couldn’t handle vaping it all day long. I found that I lost the flavour after a few hours of slush puffing and craved something a little more refreshing. It was time to try the next flavour…

GRAPE SLUSH

The classic purple soda sort of flavour, but in slushy form. If you like grape e-liquids, you’ll definitely enjoy this. It doesn’t really bring a lot else to the table but what it does, it does very well. I can’t help thinking that a little bit of menthol or koolada would really lift this juice up, but as a classic grape flavour I really can’t complain.

LIME SLUSH

This is a great contrast to the R&B. The citrus fruit on display here really shine, given its own slushy stage to perform on. It’s still a sweet juice, but the tartness helps it to be a lot more refreshing as well as giving it a longer lasting flavour, that coats the tongue and hangs around for hours after vaping. If you like a really strong, refreshing yet sweet citrus flavour, lime may be the slush for you.

SLOW BLOW

Slow Blow was the first e-liquid from Nasty Juice that I tried out. It was a real game changer as I had never experienced vaping with the iciness found with koolada e-liquids. At first taste I was won over. The sheer amount of flavour packed into this bottle was insane. You get the juiciest pineapple with layers of almost sour citrus, rounded off with a soft yet cool exhale.

Nasty Juice have been consistent when it comes to providing high quality amazing flavours and Slow Blow is no exception. The fizzy lime soda element is truly unique in the fact that it tastes very accurate. I have tried many other lime soda flavours. Slow Blow is yet another brilliant success for Nasty Juice and is a very well loved and respected flavour by many.

DEVILS TEETH

This liquid is a very enjoyable honeydew melon flavour, packed with sweet and juicy elements that were rather impressive. The melon comes across as being a melon candy due to its sweet almost bubblegum taste and it’s layered with a mildly noticeable mint. The honeydew is the more apparent on the inhale, but it still lingers as you begin to breathe out. I found that the mint became more prominent on exhaling. This doesn't take away from the melon and I appreciated this as the fruity side of this e-liquid is far superior to any other melon flavoured juice I have tried before. This e-liquid was exceedingly flavoursome. I feel Nasty Juice have come up with a real winner here when it comes to fruity and menthol e-liquids.

BAD BLOOD

The last e-liquid I am reviewing from Nasty Juice this time is Bad Blood, a delectable and superbly executed flavour. As I inhaled, a smooth and fruity wave of blackcurrant became more evident. It then morphed into a cool exhale creating a unique and enjoyable vape. It was bursting with refreshing fruitiness blended with a coldness that hit the back of my throat in a peculiar fashion.

It goes without saying that Bad Blood would be an ideal summertime vape due to its revitalising nature, but it is still pleasant all year round.

I found that the complexity found in all these e-liquids to be commendable and practically flawless.

Matata

You open the bottle and your mind thinks “Hmm grape.” Now in my opinion grape is a tricky flavour to get right. No one apart from the odd few have got it right. It’s either way too sweet or very sickly. So I wicked up my coil and dripped it right on there. Boy was I surprised! The awesome people at Twelve Monkeys, I don’t know how you’ve done it but you have surely smashed it. Finally, a grape flavour that’s not too sweet and not too sickly! To inhale it, it’s like the best grape I have ever tasted but wait there’s more, did I mention there’s apple too that was a perfect surprise; apple and grape. The exhale is an awesome sweet with a taste of sour apple and my god, it’s amazing the two flavours complement themselves perfectly to make one awesome e-juice. Like most of my reviews I’m using a mech mod with a dripper and the throat hit is perfect, just enough to satisfy my craving without overpowering the taste. If I’m completely honest, I’ve vape like half of this bottle whilst reviewing this juice because I loved it so much.

Mangabeys

First of all, the name catches my eye instantly; Mangabey. For those who are unfamiliar with this word, please allow me to enlighten you. Mangabey is a type of monkey from the tropic islands so without even opening the bottle, I knew it was going to be a tropical mix of some kind. My first thoughts were “Well that can’t be right.”

Usually, tropical mixes smell very sweet with some kind of banana but no I was wrong it was creamy mango and I was in love immediately. As soon as you vape this you get a very smooth creamy mango with a sweet pineapple taste that dances on the tip of your tongue.

The exhale is more sweet with the guava mixing in with the pineapple to make an awesome tropical vape that drifts your mind away to sunny beaches, palm trees and cheeky monkeys. But then my wick gets dry and I am back in my office and I can hear the rain pitter pattering on the window, so I sit back in my chair and drip some more and my mind wanders off to the tropical island.

This juice is amazingly smooth, creamy and sweet all at the same time, top marks once again Twelve Monkeys, sweet and creamy with a perfect amount of throat hit.

Kanzi

This juice Is a lovely mix of strawberry and watermelon that deserves much praise. The vape you inhale from this juice is just awesome! It’s very fruity and refreshing, the watermelon is predominant in there although with a perfect amount of strawberry mixed in on the inhale. The exhale, however, gives you an added fruit just a little touch of kiwi will leave your mouth watering and while your tonsils will still be buzzing from the strawberry it will leave you very satisfied. Yet again, I cannot think of a single reason why you should not buy this juice it is simply perfect in my eyes and with that being said, I will always carry a bottle in my personal stash since the throat hit is so smooth and a great flavour overall. Twelve monkeys have done it again and made a juice that is simply divine! Top marks guys, keep up the good work.

ROCK

It’s time for some seriously complex tobacco blends. Rock is also known as the Italian Blend and it’s a vapable representation of an Italian grown Kentucky tobacco used in cigars. Now, let me start by saying, I’m not a tobacco juice fan, but in many ways these juices by Black Note transcend the vape world and enter some serious tobacco simulation realms. There are so many things to say about Rock. It’s robust and strong, a real heavy tobacco blend, with the slightest of sweetness on the exhale. It’s also worth mentioning that Black Note naturally extract all their tobacco flavours, with no artificial additives of any sort.

If you’re a tobacco e-liquid purist I think you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t get a hold of Rock or any of the other blends from Black Note.

HOUSE

House is the oriental blend from Black Note. It’s a much lighter tobacco blend than Rock, containing a milder, Mediterranean-grown blend of leaves. The initial inhale gives you hints of spices and a little sweetness, with the exhale amping up the tobacco to create a rich and aromatic vape that I really enjoyed, despite my general dislike of tobacco juices. I’m proud to say that Black Note have converted me. Thanks to their care and attention to the tobacco leaves they work with, treating them for six weeks before they’re extracted and used to make these juices for real tobacco enthusiasts. Consider me all in!

REGGAE

The menthol blend. Featuring a base of Virginia tobacco and blended with a lot of mint and menthols for an ultracomplex flavour. The initial inhale is a strong menthol flavour, with hints of fresh peppermint and spearmint, while the exhale introduces the bright, light Virginia tobacco. Reggae is a very well-rounded tobacco menthol vape, which reminds me a lot of my smoking days. I must recommend all Black Notes tobacco elixirs to anyone having a hard time getting off cigarettes, because they produce a more realistic smoking experience than any e-liquids I’ve tried before.

Chococo Mint

Time for a richer, darker juice. Chococo Mint. What a gorgeous smelling juice this is, and the taste isn’t so bad either. Starting off with slightly sweetened dark chocolate, the initial vape is almost savoury, but it’s soon joined by a minty fresh core, giving you the classic chocolate mint combo. It’s such a well-known and widely loved blend that I couldn’t help but love it. This is not an all-day vape due to the chocolate aspect but when you need a bit of a treat Chococo Mint works wonders. I personally never vape it before 8pm.

Bongo Juice

A tropical mix containing more fruit than you can throw a cocktail umbrella at. There’s sweet mango, coconut, tangy pineapple, passion fruit, guava… A lot of fruit. It tastes like the old school tropical juice cartons you used to get in your lunchbox if you were lucky. It’s sweet, sour, moreish and very refreshing. It’s hard to pick out any of the individual flavours but they all play their part well and it’s certainly an overall taste that’s more than the sum of its parts.

Pearl Champagne

Everyone loves a glass of bubbly, right? But it’s expensive and goes to your head quick so I’m going to try vaping it. Pearl Champagne tastes damn close to the real thing. The only thing it’s missing are the bubbles. It’s a little sweeter than drinkable champagne but if you’re having a quiet one in and need to celebrate something, Pearl Champagne is a cheap and satisfying alternative to cracking open a bottle.

Bat juice

This juice has a sweet fruity scent, almost like a blackcurrant squash. Bat juice has a complex blend of sweet berries. This is very subtle on the inhale giving a blackcurrant and cranberry overtone. On the exhale the berry flavour intensifies and then finishes off nicely with a slight cooling on the throat and lungs. The hit of this e-liquid is very smooth and the vape as a whole is really good. The element I like most about this juice is that it is a sweet menthol. No harsh hits and no bitter aftertaste. This is an all round great fruity vape.

Exotic Tropic

The scent of this e-liquid is a fruity mixture. It smells very similar to tropical fruit juice but with an overtone of mango. On the inhale I was instantly hit with a tropical flavour. It has a overtone of mango to begin with. This then develops into a blend of mango, papaya, oranges and a hint of ripened kiwana (horned melon). That banana-esq note really finishes the fruity mixture to perfection. This is a sweet complex blend that is easier to get key tones like mango when vaped from a freshly-wicked coil. A very nice vape from start to finish. The smoothness is as impressive as the vapour production. I found that it works best at 65 watts. I really love this. Bravo Thor juice!

Flamingo

Sweetshop strawberry laces. That’s exactly what Flamingo has the fragrance of. This juice smells divine and I’m hoping it taste this good too. The juice tastes different to the sweet smell, although it is actually very similar. At first you receive the strawberry then it gains a slight peachy after tone and that is it from the start of the inhale to the exhale. When exhaled, the flavour escalates and an interesting creamy coconut undertone smoothes off the finishing flavour. This delightful taste lingers for a moment leaving you ready for another hit. Overall, this is a very interesting and pleasant vape, a unique all day vape for the strawberry lovers.

Poseidon

This e-liquid smells like the generic delicious smell of all vape lounges across the land. A carefully blended mixture of desserts and fruits entwining amongst the air. The e-liquid has a nice blueberry scent and a strong cake-like essence. When first inhaled I got a taste of rich chocolaty cheesecake. It is a very strong dessert taste with a hint of nuts. This gives an organic, luxurious edge to the e-liquid. When exhaling, the flavour progresses and a sweet blueberry flavour comes through, this blends perfectly with the initial cakey nut flavour and creates a sweet creamy peanut aftertaste. This juice is perfect for the vaper with a sweet tooth. It’s everything you would ask for if you went for a tasteful dessert.

When vaping through a dual coil RDA the flavours come through much stronger and the biscuity cheesecake flavour comes through more strongly. You can really taste a nutty

mixture. The e-liquid creates beautiful plumes of smoke with its 70vg 30pg blend. I would definitely recommend this to all of my dessert vaping friends, it’s delightful.

Ares

This one’s a real treat for the sweet tooth, a strawberry ice cream sundae. The creamy taste of vanilla bean ice cream fills your mouth on the initial inhale as the sweet, syrupy strawberry rushes in to lift the whole vape to another level of dessertiness. This liquid produces some seriously sweet and dense clouds, leaving the room smelling like an ice cream bar. What a treat!

Pegasus

This e-liquid has a vanilla, biscuit scent with a creamy undertone. This smells mouth watering. When first vaped the only taste I got was sugary vanilla. Then I went for a second hit. Upon inhaling there is a long lasting sugary pastry flavour, like a soft sponge or butter pudding.

Then this pastry flavour develops with a creamy vanilla flavour, this has the taste of custard that really complements its predecessor.

As a whole, the vape tastes like an authentic British pudding with custard. It is a pleasant vape but be wary that it is rather sweet so can be a bit too much after a while.

Perfect for the dessert lovers and sweet toothed enthusiasts!

Lemon Macaron

This juice has a pleasantly well-balanced set of flavours. Initially there is a dominant taste of lemon, however it was not sharp nor was it sour – rather a smooth, sweet and creamy one.

There is a soft undertone of a nutty meringue that brings a well-rounded flavour to the table. There is no nasty aftertaste like you sometimes find in many lemon-based flavours and this is a definite bonus. I particularly enjoyed the softness to the lemon. This juice was incredibly easy to vape and at no point did I find it to be sickly.

Cookie Da Bomb

Cookie Da Bomb is a warming, sweet cookie flavour. To me, it tasted strongly like a cinnamon oat biscuit. There is a fantastic depth to this juice and although it is not overly complicated, I can tell that there has been a lot of careful consideration when it comes to flavour components. As I inhaled, there was a slightly sweet taste of crumbly cookie. Upon exhaling, the notes of an almost soft cinnamon became more apparent. Again, like the Lemon Macaron, there was no funny aftertaste, nor was there any point at which I felt it was too sweet or not sweet enough. Cookie Da Bomb was a very palatable e-liquid and I could tell that a lot of work had been put in to create it.

I can say that this juice would be an ideal all-day vape, especially on a cold day when you are after a bit of a warming and tasty vaping experience.

Blueberry Lemonade

Immediately I noticed an extremely unique and tasty blast of a slightly sour yet enticing fruitiness. On inhaling, the main flavour is a revitalising and pleasant lemonade. There are soft but noticeable undertones of blueberry. I like how the sweet blueberry complements the sharp lemon, bonding together to create a super summertime vape. Exhaling, an icy coolness comes into play to really add an even more refreshing edge to this juice. It doesn’t taste of menthol, but rather a cold sensation on exhaling.

Thai Chai Boba

Following the other flavours in this line, Thai Chai Boba is also a cooling and fruity e-liquid designed to reinvigorate. From the second I dripped this juice on my coils, I picked up on an orangey citrus element that I could tell was intricately and expertly concocted.

As I continued to vape this e-liquid, I noticed a slight taste of sweet mango. As the names suggests, there is also an undertone of a vanilla chai, however it was overshadowed by the potency of the fruit and icy flavours.

This juice was also extremely easy to vape due to its carefully calculated ingredients, all of which were in the ideal ratios. They have really put lots of effort into creating such a delicious flavour and have not stopped until it was 100% right.

Horny on the Roxx

The second I opened this bottle I noticed a soft and sweet aroma of lychee. This was met with a subdued but still pleasant honeydew melon. Honeydew melons are a dime a dozen within the vaping industry at the moment and Horny on the Roxx is a perfect example of how great this flavour can be. I found a slightly creamy element to this juice when exhaling, but it was just barely noticeable. Following the other e-liquids in this line, there was again a touch of iciness to it. I particularly enjoyed the realistic and delicious lychee constituent and it was perfect as a first vape of the morning as it was so refreshing.

Bangkok Bandit

Bangkok Bandit is a low mint e-liquid meaning that there was just enough koolada to add a little bit of a cool edge, without it being too potent.

There are definite notes of tropical fruits like mango, papaya and melon. The mango was more noticeable on the inhale, whereas the papaya was carried through to the exhale. I found that the honeydew melon was a little muted however I didn’t feel like this affected the pleasant nature of this juice. The fact that this juice didn’t have copious amounts of iciness to it really made it perfect for me. It allowed the fruitier flavours to take centre stage and just quietly complemented them without being too overwhelming.

VM16 | 193

This juice carries a sweet strawberry note spiked with a hint of sourness. On the inhale, a subtle strawberry taste rises with a light hit. The exhale sees the flavour bursting out with a sweet smooth strawberry flavour. It’s not that of a fruit but more of a candy taste. It tastes just like a red Starburst!

The flavour lingers on the tongue long after vaping and due to it not being overly sweet this e-liquid is a definite all day vape.

BURST DUO – PEACH AND RASPBERRY

This juice has a very sweet peachy vibe that makes the mouth water. You can smell the freshness of the fruit. It’s such a vibrant scent. Straight off the bat is a punchy fresh peach flavour with a pleasant infusion of juicy raspberries. Right, when I say this is delicious you must take my word for it!

It’s the best peach vape I have tried to date. The raspberry takes it to a new level of fruity and gives the peach a twist that plain peach flavours lack.

SLAMMIN – PEACH

This has a deliciously sweet peach smell. It’s subtle but that makes it even more appealing.

On the inhale, the juice hits straight on the taste buds with a peachy sweetness. The flavour becomes a lot more eccentric on the exhale gaining a bolder profile. This e-liquid does exactly what it says on the tin – a good peach flavour. Although the juice is great, it could do with a hint of an additional flavour to allow the peach to pop more.

BURST BACCO – BOLD

Wow, this juice has an in your face earthy tobacco aroma. It has a light sweetness that complements the richness of the tobacco. On inhaling the flavour instantly greets you with a rich earthy note. This strengthens on the exhale incorporating a sweet tobacco taste. When the rich earthy flavour and tobacco collide, the outcome is bitter but nice.

I haven’t tried such a rich tobacco before, it mimics that of the finest Cuban cigar. A great flavour overall.

HONEY

A beautiful tasting and smelling concentrate that’s straight from the hive. This is such a versatile flavour it could be used in a plethora of different e-liquids, from desserts to fruit blends, or maybe even on its own.

RAINBOW CANDY

A fruity, candy flavour that’s full of lime, grape, strawberry and a million other different fruits with a classic candy hint that takes over the whole concentrate. I imagine you could make some seriously addictive juices filled with a sugar rush using this concentrate.

BLUEBERRY EXTRA

Blueberry Extra is a stronger, riper, sweeter version of the original concentrate. It’s a great flavour to use, perfect with pastries, doughnuts, creams, fruit blends, candies... The possibilities are endless.

SUGAR COOKIE V2

This is an essential concentrate when making cookie, or countless other dessert vapes. It tastes sweet and buttery, almost like a shortbread biscuit when vaped on its own, but it adds depth and complexity to almost any other dessert blend.

PINK LEMONADE

Fizzy tangy lemonade is mixed with sweet and slightly sour raspberries. A personal favourite of mine, an amazing flavour to use when you want to make a fruity, refreshing lemonade-based liquid. It works amazingly when used with other fruits as well like strawberry or peach. Mouth-watering stuff.

There are some very pricey mods out there, but some will make your eyes water

Smokers can save a significant amount of money by switching to vaping. Many former smokers only realise just how much money they’ve saved when the arrival of unexpected utility bills stops sending their blood-pressure into overdrive.

But for a certain type of person, vaping evolves into an expensive hobby. It’s in our hunter-gatherer nature to collect things but those things aren’t always essential to our survival. Royal family anniversary crockery and Beatles memorabilia fill up the shelves of obsessives the world over. But for an increasing number of vapers, it’s now mods that line their bookshelves.

Mods can get very expensive and equally flashy. Some, you may argue, are worth

It’s also a limited edition line of just 500, which is always a handy justification to hike up the price.

FEATURING STEVE MASSINGHAM AKA CRAFTY COILS

Hello and welcome to another Crafty Coils feature. This time I’m looking at coil polishing, so let’s dive in!

First off, it’s a very involved process. Yes, the results are beautiful, but it can take some time to get there. You will need sandpaper/polishing paper from 400 grit to 7,000 grit. The grit you start with depends on the wire you’re polishing. The lowest you’ll ever need is 400. I tend to increase in 500 grit increments throughout the process.

You’ll also need a core to wrap the coil around. It must be able to fit in the chuck of your drill. I use a 3mm diameter piece of steel rod I found on eBay for about £2.

An ultrasonic cleaner is, in my mind, essential for cleaning all the metal particles from your coils. I would advise against vaping polished coils that haven’t been through an ultrasonic cleaner. Lastly, you’ll need a drill.

STEP 1

You need to drill-wrap a coil. Put your core in the chuck of the drill, tuck the end of your wire in the gap and, while holding the other end, use the turning drill to wrap the coil. Do this leaving at least four wraps either side of what will be the body of the coil. Once this is done it should easily slide off the core. Snip the non-chuck end of the coil flush with the main coil, leaving no leg or protrusion. Then you’re ready to go.

STEP 2

The polishing begins.

PHASE 1: If you’re polishing 22 or 24 AWG, you’re going to want to start with a low grit, around 400. For 36 AWG, start at 1000. It’s all about removing material in an efficient way without causing damage to the coil. Twenty two up to about 26 can stand the lower grit as they have a lot of mass, but after that you need to start moderating your start point. Cut your sandpaper into strips about the

width of your coil and then pop the coil onto the drill, remembering to polish in the same direction as you wrapped the coil. Fold the sandpaper over the coil with the coil saddled in the fold, gently pull away from the coil with the two ends of the paper and start your drill.

The paper doesn’t need to touch the coil all the way around as it’s rotating in the little sandpaper sling you’ve made it. I tend to do four or five 20-second standings per grit with a five-minute go

in the ultrasonic cleaner in between each grit. Once you’ve worked up to about 2,500 grit, you’re moving into phase 2.

PHASE 2: This is less about removing metal and more about making the sanding marks on the coils smaller and smaller, which will slowly increase that mirror shine. Keep repeating the process all the way to 7,000 grit where you do the 7,000 twice — once with the paper dry and once with it damp.

NOTE: You should never take more than about 30% of your surface wire off as it will make the coil brittle. Now you need to sort out your legs.

Do this on your core. One side is easy as there is a nice long bit to get hold of. Just unwrap the four extra wraps you added that side and snip to give you your leg. The other side is a bit tougher. Work that end up without warping the coil until you can get a grip on it. Again, take off those extra wraps to form your leg.

THE FINAL CLEAN Scrub those shiny little devils as hard as you dare with a soft brush and some dish soap and water. Give them a good rinse and then pop them back into the ultrasonic cleaner for another 10 minutes.

That’s all, folks! In the next issue, I’ll be looking at alien coils....
