LETTER

FROM THE EDITOR

Hello and welcome to another great issue of Vapouround Magazine.

We have had another action-packed couple of months with Poland, Paris, and North Carolina being just a few of the places we have visited.

At VapEvent Paris we launched our first ever Vapouround e-liquid ‘Berry Ice.’

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in our new juice line and for all those who have given us feedback and helped with the launch.

A second new flavour ‘Toffacino’ is being launched at ‘Vaper Expo UK 2016The Return’ which is just around the corner so come along and be amongst the first to try this for yourself.

We are working on the official Vaper Expo show guide right now and there is so much going on that you will really not want to miss out on this amazing event.

Instead of taking a stand at the Expo, we are bringing our colourful double-decker Vapouround Bus along as our stand and we would love to see you on board during the show. You simply won’t be able to miss us. This is one of the first of many outings for the Vapouround Bus so come and check us out.

We are also gearing up for the second Vapouround Awards extravaganza next year and will be holding a series of ‘mini awards’ features in the magazine between now and then. Mini awards winners get their juice automatically entered into the main Awards ceremony and you can read more about that in this magazine.

We have also teamed up with Premium Labs who are sponsoring the launch of our exclusive and newest Top Mod-el competition and you can also read about that in this issue.

Finally for now, we have also partnered up with 2017 IECIE Shenzhen eCig Expo and, in another first, we will be bringing out a special show guide for that event which will be in Chinese and English.

So enjoy what we have put together for your enjoyment in this issue and keep doing what you are doing to make this wonderful industry so great, interesting and vibrant.

Universal vaping standards are vital to protect consumers and promote international trade

The lack of universal standards in the global vaping industry are having a serious effect on innovation and impacting on harm reduction measures according to an industry expert.

Marina Trani, Head of R&D at British American Tobacco subsidiary Nicoventures, said it was vital that globally agreed standards were established for the good of the industry and for the protection of consumers.

She is highly critical of the current piecemeal approach to regulation which sees vastly different regulatory standards in different parts of the world and says we are still along way off from global harmonisation.

Ms Trani said regulation should be tough enough to ensure that the public could be confident about the vaping products on the market but not so harsh as to stifle innovation, global trade and the development of the industry.

She was highly critical that there were vastly different regulatory standards in two of the world’s huge global vaping markets, the USA and Europe, and said it was smaller companies which were hit hardest by this approach.

“Different rules in different jurisdictions make it overly burdensome and expensive, especially for smaller companies,” she said, adding: “It stifles growth and innovation, which in turn could stifle the potential these products have for reducing the harm of smoking.”

The expert said the EU and the US were “worlds apart” in terms of e-cigarette regulation which made it overly burdensome for companies trying to conduct business both the US and Europe.

For example the draft US regulations will require pre-approval before any change is made to a vaping product while the EU Tobacco Products Directive requires a less restrictive six month prior notification (rather than approval) for ‘substantial modification’ to the same product.

Ms Trani added: “Regulation is both necessary in the industry and should be welcomed but it makes no sense for the rules to be so widely different in different jurisdictions.

We need rules which are not overly burdensome, which set standards to protect consumers, increase understanding of next generation products, and which are clear and harmonized globally while not inhibiting innovation.

“Sadly we are a very long way from this ideal right now but we need to push towards the same global standards throughout the industry so that it does eventually happen.

“We need standards for consumer protection and consumer satisfaction but the regulatory framework needs to be as simple as possible to promote innovation.

“However in my experience, standards are never as simple as they could be and we currently have a huge patchwork of different standards around the world which does not help matters at all.

“Right now we are at the start of the regulatory journey and I think we are headed for a really messy time before things begin to get better and sadly, global regulation is a process which tends to happen at glacial speed.”

Ms Trani said when it came to e-cigarattes and vaping products, consumer safety was the top priority but that did not mean that regulations had to be so complicated, fragmented and burdensome that it prevented businesses from operating efficiently.

British American Tobacco was the first tobacco company to launch an e-cigarette in 2013 and has been proactive in both developing the first voluntary product standard with the British Standards Institute (BSI), advocating for more harmonised standards and is currently actively contributing to the European.

Could e-cigarettes stop your cravings for sweets and chocolate?

Many smokers report that one of the unwanted side-effects of giving up smoking is that they put on weight.

It is easy to see why this might happen because people turn to sweets or snacks to put into their mouths instead of a cigarette.

In addition, nicotine is an appetite suppressant so when you quit smoking then you feel more hungry than you did before.

But what happens when people decide to substitute smoking for vaping?

Well e-liguids can still contain nicotine (although not all do) so you are still getting your nicotine hit but without all the nasty side-effects of inhaling tobacco smoke.

The often-quoted statistic that vaping is around 95 per cent less harmful than smoking reflects the really nasty and harmful chemicals and other compounds found in tobacco smoke. As nothing is burned in an e-cigarette these highly toxic compounds are not present at all.

So ex-smokers who have taken up vaping may find that they don’t get so much of a craving for sweets and snacks as those who decided to quit smoking by, for example, going cold-turkey. Also vaping mimics smoking to the extent that you are inhaling on a device in much the same way as you would inhale on a cigarette. However you are inhaling vaporised liquid rather than inhaling the products of combustion, but the process is much the same.

Because of this, there has been much discussion on social media sites that a lot of ex-smokers who have turned to vaping find that they do not put on

any weight at all because they are not reaching for the snacks at all.

Some ex-smokers have actually reported that they lost weight since switching from smoking but I am not expecting to see e-cigarettes being marketed as a weight loss tool any time soon.

Regular vapers will know that some of the most popular flavours of e-liquid are candies, sweets and desserts.

Could it be that vapers with a sweet tooth find that their caramel, chocolate custard or donut vapes satisfy their cravings for sweet things?

I don’t think there have been any scientific studies done on the subject, at least not yet, but the answer seems to be that it is at least a possibility.

Some vapers who favour the really sweet e-liquids have said the sweetness of the vape product is all they need and they snack on candy and cakes less as a result.

However others say the taste of the vape makes them sometimes want to eat a nice custard donut or chocolate bar so the answer is far from clear.

One vaper posted on Reddit earlier this year: “Whenever I get a craving for something sweet, I just vape instead of eating a sleeve of Oreos,” and many other vapers reported having similar feelings themselves.

A controlled scientific study on this issue would be really

interesting indeed. In fact the more research into vaping the better, as it can lead to the general public being more aware of the huge differences between smoking and vaping.

It is still disturbing that so many people think that when it comes to effects on one’s health, that smoking and vaping are about equally as bad.

I suppose the tendency for regulators to lump smoking and vaping together does not help but that is a debate for another time.

Finally if you do come across any research on the effects vaping and weight loss or cravings for sweet things then let us know. Also feel free to share your stories with us via our social media pages - facebook.com/Vapouround/ - or Twitter @vapouround.

Why do teens vape?

Well for many its all about the flavour

If you listen to the horror stories about young people and vaping then you could be forgiven for thinking that vaping will be responsible for a new nicotine addiction epidemic among teenagers.

In America the FDA has already classified vaping products as “electronic nicotine delivery systems” but this is far from accurate.

As we all know, e-liquid may contain nicotine or it may contain none at all. Clearly the apparatus used for inhaling the vapour of a liquid which contains no nicotine could not sensibly be described as an ‘electronic nicotine delivery system.’

Traditionally, public health groups have been alarmed at the rising rates of vaping among teenagers. For example in 2014 the president of the American Lung Association said:

“E-cigarette use among youth will begin kids on a lifelong addiction to nicotine and tobacco products.”

However a new study into what attracts young people to vaping has found that it is not necessarily nicotine at all. In fact a lot of young people care only about the flavour of the vapour and choose cool flavours with absolutely no nicotine at all.

Research from the University of Michigan examined what substances were vaped by US youth and looked at youngsters from eighth, tenth and 12th grade who used e-cigarettes.

Among students who had ever used a vaporiser, 65–66% last used ‘just flavouring’ in 12th, in 10th and in 8th grade, more than all other responses combined.

The study concluded: “These results challenge the common assumption that all vaporiser users inhale nicotine and suggest the importance of developing different rationales for the regulation of vaporiser devices as compared to the regulation of substances marketed for vaporiser use.”

In all three grades, the percentage using ‘just flavouring’ was above 57% for males, females, African- Americans, Hispanics, Whites, and students both with and without a parent with a college degree.

Nicotine use came in a distant second, at about 20% in 12th and 10th grade and 13% in 8th grade.

Taking into account youth who vaped nicotine at last use increases national estimates of tobacco/nicotine prevalence in the past 30 days by 24 – 38% above and beyond cigarette smoking, which is substantial but far less than estimates that assume all vaporiser users inhale nicotine.

The researchers said that the results of the study: call into question the designation of vaporisers and e-cigarettes as ENDS ( ‘Electronic Nicotine Delivery System’ ), suggest that the recent rise in adolescent vaporiser use does not necessarily indicate a nicotine epidemic, and indicate that vaporiser users can be candidates for primary prevention programmes.

They added: “The use of vaporisers such as e-cigarettes by adolescents has grown exponentially in recent years, but little is known about what substances they are vaping.

“Using a nationally representative sample of adolescents we find that most of them (about 60%) report that they vaped ‘just flavouring’ at last use. Less than a quarter reported vaping nicotine at last use.

“These results challenge the common assumption that most youth use vaporisers to vape nicotine.”

E-cigarettes may have helped around 18,000 people in England to give up smoking in 2015, according to new research published in the British Medical Journal.

The use of e-cigarettes is indeed very popular, with an estimated 2.8 million vapers in the UK alone.

The study which was funded by Cancer Research UK was published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Researchers from University College London (UCL) say the rise of e-cigarettes has helped thousands to give up regular cigarettes across the nation –and is associated with a higher rate of successful quit attempts by smokers.

Robert West, co-author of the study and Professor of Health Psychology at UCL, stated: “We estimate for every 10,000 people who used an e-cigarette to quit, approximately 580 would have quit who wouldn’t have quit otherwise.

“The increased prevalence of e-cigarettes in England does not appear to have been associated with a

detectable change in attempts to stop smoking…however, the increase in e-cigarette use has been associated with an increase in success of quit attempts.”

Prof Robert West concluded: “England is sometimes singled out as being too positive in its attitude to e-cigarettes. This data suggests that our relatively liberal regulation of e-cigarettes is probably justified.”

“This significant yearon-year fall indicates that something in UK tobacco control policy is working, and successful quitting through substitution with e-cigarettes is one likely major contributor.”

Prof Linda Bauld, of Cancer Research UK, said: “The British public have voted with their feet and are choosing to use e-cigarettes. This is a positive choice, and we should promote it.”

Writing in the BMJ, John Britton, director of the UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies at the University of

Nottingham, said the findings suggested e-cigarette use could contribute to falling smoking rates.

He said: “This significant year-on-year fall indicates that something in UK tobacco control policy is working, and successful quitting through substitution with e-cigarettes is one likely major contributor.”

Alison Cox, director of prevention at Cancer Research UK, said: “E-cigarettes can play a role in helping people quit smoking and the evidence so far shows e-cigarettes are much safer than tobacco. This study shows the positive impact they’ve had on helping people give up the deadly addiction.

“We’ll continue to fund research into e-cigarettes to build our understanding, and encourage people to combine the most popular method with the most effective -- Stop Smoking Services. But this study reassures us of the promise these products have.”

* Tobacco kills more than 100,000 people a year in the UK and is still the number one preventable cause of cancer.

SMOKING RATES IN ENGLAND AT ALL TIME LOW AS FEWER ADULTS THAN EVER BEFORE LIGHT UP

Fewer than 17 per cent of the population are smokers according to Public Health England. Smoking rates across England are now at the lowest levels since records began with only 16.9 per cent of the population now lighting up, according to health officials.

Public Health England (PHE) released the figured as it launched its annual Stoptober campaign to encourage the nation’s remaining smokers to quit for the month of October.

The idea behind quitting for a month is not just a gimmick as PHE say studies show that if people can give up for 28 days then they are more likely to stop smoking for good.

Last year, out of the 2.5 million smokers who made a quit attempt, 500,000 people (20%) were successful; the highest recorded success rate and up from just 13.6% 6 years ago. This increase in successful stop smoking attempts reflects the high number of people using quitting aids. In 2015, just over a million people (1,027,000) used an e-cigarette in a quit attempt while around 700,000 used a licensed nicotine replacement product such as patches or gum. In addition, over 350,000 people

used their local stop smoking service in 2015 to 2016.

Alongside this, according to the latest data from Nielsen, the number of cigarettes sold in England and Wales has dropped by 20% in the last 2 years. The smoking rate in England has also fallen to below 17% for the first time.

The biggest decreases in smoking over the last four years can be seen in the South West (18.7% to 15.5%), the North East (22% to 18.7%) and Yorkshire and Humber (21.9% to 18.6%).

This increase in successful stop smoking attempts reflects the high number of people using quitting aids. In 2015, just over a million people (1,027,000) used an e-cigarette in a quit attempt while around 700,000 used a licensed nicotine replacement product such as patches or gum.

Dr Gina Radford, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, said:

“While we know that quitting smoking is not easy, this Stoptober is a perfect time to try again. The best thing a smoker can do for their health is to stop smoking. There is more help and

support available now than ever before. The introduction of standardised packs removes the glamorous branding and brings health warnings to the fore and e-cigarettes, which many smokers find helpful for quitting, are now regulated to assure their safety and quality.”

Professor Kevin Fenton, National Director of Health and Wellbeing for PHE said:

“While it is amazing that there are over twice as many ex-smokers as current smokers in England there are still over 7 million people regularly lighting up.

“Alongside unhealthy diet, smoking is the biggest cause of preventable early death in England, accounting for over 78,000 deaths a year. Quitters will soon see they have reduced blood pressure, easier breathing and better circulation. Stopping smoking is the best thing a smoker can do to improve their health.” Stoptober is back for a fifth year, having driven almost a million quit attempts to date. It starts on the 1 October and is based on research that by the time you have quit for 28 days you are 5 times more likely to stop for good.

For more information, search ‘Stoptober’ online and choose the package of support that will help you quit for good.

WILL FRAMEWORK CONVENTION ON TOBACCO CONTROL’S GOVERNING BODY HELP OR HINDER

VAPING

INDUSTRY

AT NOVEMBER’S COP7 MEETING?

IF THE LAST ONE WAS ANYTHING TO GO BY, WE CAN EXPECT E-CIGARETTES AND ENDS (ELECTRONIC NICOTINE DELIVERY DEVICES) TO BE TOP OF THE AGENDA AT THE NEXT CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES (COP) IN INDIA IN NOVEMBER.

The COP is the ‘bi-annual meeting of the signatories of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), the first international treaty negotiated under the auspices of the World Health Organisation (WHO). The COP is the governing body of the FCTC and can make amendments to the convention as they see fit. However, it’s not easy, as the COP is made up of representatives of the nearly two hundred countries that have signed up to the convention. What the COP recommends is very important, because it provides guidance to countries around the world looking to regulate tobacco products. You could argue that the only similarity between e-cigarettes and real cigarettes is the word ‘cigarette’. And the FCTC was established before e-cigarettes were even on the radar. But this didn’t stop e-cigarettes being very much on the radar at the last COP in Russia in 2014. Things did not go smoothly. Before the meeting even got underway, there was reaction to a leaked document

that revealed the WHO’s view that e-cigarettes were a ‘threat to public health’ and their intention to classify them as tobacco products. Clearly, at that point, the WHO saw e-cigarettes very much as part of the problem rather than a solution. The backlash to this document, however, meant that e-cigarettes and ENDS were at that time not deemed tobacco products. It was decided that a group of independent scientific experts would be convened to provide an expert report on ENDS in advance of the next COP – this one! But the proceedings of the independent scientific group were totally unclear, including the composition of the group. To date, the report has not been made public and it remains to be seen what the WHO and COP will do about ENDS. This is not the first time that the WHO has been less than transparent on the issue of tobacco control. At the last COP, members of the public and journalists were ejected from the public gallery and so were unable to observe or report on plenary sessions that are meant to be public. Michiel Reerink, JTI’s Global Regulatory Strategy VicePresident, was quoted this year as saying that nobody would argue against the need for tobacco to be appropriately regulated, but that there was a right way and a wrong way of achieving that.

‘Excluding the public and the media from debates amounts to censorship, and is unacceptable from a publiclyfunded organization,’ he said.

‘This begs the question: what does the WHO have to hide?’

COP6 – THAT LETTER!

The COP and the FCTC were all over the news before their last get together in October 2014. The reason – a letter to Margaret Chan, Director General of the WHO. In May of that year, 53 scientists from 15 countries got together to put pen to paper to protest the WHO’s plans for e-cigarettes and ENDS. The interest was such that there was media coverage everywhere from the US, across Europe, Australia, Africa, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, India… the list goes on. Clearly, there is a lot of interest in the WHO’s plans for e-cigarettes and this will no doubt be the case again this time around.

In this letter, the scientists argued that by classifying e-cigarettes as tobacco, the WHO risked missing an opportunity to drastically reduce smoking and the illness and death associated with it. They said that e-cigarettes and other reduced risk products could play a significant role in meeting the 2025 UN

NEWS 32 ISSUE 07 VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE

objectives to reduce non-communicable diseases. ‘E-cigarettes and other safer nicotine products are part of the solution, not part of the problem,’ they said. Why does it matter if e-cigarettes are treated the same way as tobacco products? It matters a lot because it would mean higher taxes, no advertising, large health warnings etc, all of which are intended to reduce attractiveness, acceptability and accessibility. It would stifle the incentive to innovate and could see technological advances in what is currently a rapidly growing category come to grinding halt. Behind Closed Doors

Contributing to the debate at COP or even listening to the debate is easier said than done. As already mentioned, the public and media were not allowed to observe discussions on e-cigarettes or indeed much of the proceedings at the last COP.

And what about vapers? Where do they fit in this debate? There are already millions of vapers in the UK alone. Martin Cullip, spokesperson for Freedom to Vape argues that they must be allowed into the debate. He says: ‘It would appear incongruous that there is no facility whereby the FCTC would allow representation by any of the 2.8 million vapers that Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) have identified as existing in the UK to contribute to the debate in India.’

That the public and media were excluded from FCTC COP proceedings is completely at odds with the proceedings

of other UN meetings. Take for example, the Sustainable Innovation Forum (COP21) on climate change in Paris this year. There were 3,000 accredited journalists. Political and business leaders participated, there was live streaming and the event was sponsored by business.

Take also the last COP (2015) of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC). Nearly 2000 NGOs were granted observer status of which 41% were environmental NGOs, 14% were business NGOs and 25% were ‘research and independent’ NGOs. There were 479 NGO observers at the FCCC COP- 6.

Contrast this with only 26 NGOs being granted observer status for FCTC COP6. None of these were business NGOs and so business did not have a voice. And neither did vapers!

The media were also conspicuous by their absence. Drew Johnson of the Washington Times said of his experience:

“I joined dozens of other members of the media from around the globe in Moscow last October to cover a tobacco-control meeting held by the U.N.’s public health arm, the World Health Organization (WHO). Journalists were told the conference would be open to the media – as it should have been, since the body was discussing matters of public health, international business regulations and global tax law at great expense to the global taxpayers who helped to fund the event

Moments before discussions concerning a controversial proposed international tobacco tax began, however, journalists – including me – were threatened and physically removed from a meeting room so we could not report on the proceedings. The next day, the WHO banned journalists from the conference completely. Discussions proceeded in secret, behind closed doors, with no oversight and no accountability.”

He also said:

‘While a core function of the U.N. is to promote and protect press freedom worldwide, the United Nations is one of the most serious threats to a free press in the world today. The organization blacklists journalists, bans reporters from its events and tries to silence the media, all while urging countries throughout the world to embrace freedom of the press.Simply put, the U.N. is despicably hypocritical on the issue of press freedom.’

But Cullip is hopeful that vapers, at least those in the UK, can depend on representation by ASH. He says: ‘ASH will be present at COP7 and have often emphasised that they are supportive of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool; vaping consumers will hope that they make this support visible with the backing of the UK’s Department of Health representatives who should be heeding the advice of their own public health institutions.’

COP7 - THE CONSUMER AND E-CIGS

So what would be a good outcome of this upcoming COP for e-cigs and ENDS, the consumer and the industry?

Well for a start, e-cigarettes and ENDS should not be banned. Lets face it, e-cigarettes are here to stay anyway. The EU has regulated them, the US FDA is regulating them and the Australian and New Zealand governments are now looking at them. The Australian government has announced a consultation following a petition by NNAAustralia (New Nicotine Alliance) to allow nicotine for e-cigarette use (currently it is on the poisons list). And in New Zealand, the government has agreed in principle that nicotine should be legally available for use in e-cigarettes.

In the UK, Public Health England, the government’s main public health agency, published a report saying that e-cigarettes are at least 95% less harmful than cigarettes. And the UK Royal College of Physicians (RCP) argued that ‘e-cigarettes should be promoted widely as a substitute for smoking.’ Their report also concluded that e-cigarettes are likely to be beneficial to UK public health and that smokers should be reassured and encouraged to use them and the public can be reassured that e-cigarettes are much safer than smoking.

The WHO is, therefore, unlikely to call for a ban, and everyone agrees that e-cigarettes should be regulated. But regulation should be proportionate. Proportionate regulation would, for example, facilitate and not overly restrict, access and availability, appeal (such as choice of flavor), ability to communicate about the products and appropriate public place vaping.

The RCP also argue for proportionate regulation. Their report said that regulation should not be allowed to inhibit innovation and the use of these products by smokers. A regulatory strategy should take a balanced approach in seeking to ensure product safety and enable and encourage

smokers to use the product instead of tobacco…’

But proportionate regulation doesn’t mean no regulation To allay concerns of regulators and consumers, the WHO has a unique opportunity to call for product safety and quality standards. There is already a growing body of work with national standards bodies such as the UK BSI and the French AFNOR standards on ENDS that can be used as the basis of national standards in other countries. The European standards body, CEN is also actively working to create European standards that could underpin EU regulations. These working groups also include members of the WHO’s TobLabNet, and should be entrusted with forming the basis of any new regulatory frameworks around the world.

THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS SAYS:

• E-cigarettes are not a gateway to smoking – in the UK, use of e-cigarettes is limited almost entirely to those who are already using, or have used, tobacco.

• E-cigarettes do not result in normalisation of smoking – there is no evidence that either nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or e-cigarette use has resulted in renormalisation of smoking. None of these products has to date attracted significant use among adult never-smokers, or demonstrated evidence of significant gateway progression into smoking among young people.

• E-cigarettes and quitting smoking - among smokers, e-cigarette use is likely to lead to quit attempts that would not otherwise have happened, and in a proportion of these to successful cessation. In this way, e-cigarettes can act as a gateway from smoking.

• E-cigarettes and long-term harm - the possibility of some harm from long-term e-cigarette use cannot be dismissed due to inhalation of the ingredients other than nicotine, but is likely to be very small, and substantially smaller than that arising from tobacco smoking. With appropriate

product standards to minimise exposure to the other ingredients, it should be possible to reduce risks of physical health still further. Although it is not possible to estimate the long-term health risks associated with e-cigarettes precisely, the available data suggest that they are unlikely to exceed 5% of those associated with smoked tobacco products, and may well be substantially lower than this figure.

FOR THE LAST TIME

OF TELLING YOU… VAPING IS NOT THE SAME AS SMOKING

surveys found.

SPACES ON HEALTH GROUNDS.

We know smoking is bad for the smoker and for those around them who are forced to inhale second-hand tobacco smoke.

Studies have shown that among the general public there is still a lot of confusion about whether vaping is really smoking but in a more modern context. Vapers, on the other hand, are totally clear on the matter and will soon put friends, family members or colleagues right if they were asked: “Hey how long have you been smoking on that thing?”

The answer is always the same: “Vaping is not the same as smoking. It is not smoking.”

So it should come as little surprise to find that a US study has found that the majority of e-cigarette users have vaped in a smoke-free environment and most don’t view use of the devices as harmful to themselves or others.

Nearly three quarters of users opposed banning e-cigarette use in public spaces that are designated as non-smoking, and younger users are most likely to consider all spaces acceptable for vaping,

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, e-cigarette use is on the rise in the US and around 4% of adults currently use the devices, Most states have banned tobacco smoking in public areas and workplaces, but most do not have any laws with regard to the use of e-cigarettes.

A new study from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine found that: 60% of e-cigarette users said they had vaped in an area where smoking was banned.

Among 18-29 year-olds, nearly three quarters had used e-cigarettes in smokefree areas, while older adults were less likely to do so.

People who vaped every day were twice as likely as occasional users to vape in smoke-free places.

The most common places people reported vaping were service venues like bars and restaurants, followed by workplaces.

E-cigarette users also reported vaping in malls, movie theaters and even hospitals and schools.

Most users said that others reacted neutrally to them vaping in smoke-free areas, and only 2.5 percent reported getting negative reactions.

Nearly all (89%), e-cigarette users believed that e-cigarettes are less harmful than cigarettes. Around 62% believed that e-cigarettes are not harmful at all while 83% said second-hand vapour is not harmful. Among the reasons given for banning smoking and vaping in public places is that one aspect of the smoking ban is to make cigarettes seem less like a ‘normal’ lifestyle choice.

The argument runs that because the general public may confuse someone vaping for someone smoking, then allowing people to vape in public runs counter to the desire of making smoking seem less normal.

Perhaps a counter argument could be that normalising vaping would go a long way to achieve the goal of making smoking seem less normal.

Also while it is true that the first generation of e-cigarettes did look a lot like the traditional cigarettes they replaced, the same cannot be said for our modern devices.

Even from a distance it is clear who is smoking and who is vaping and the distinction is even clearer up close… for one thing that sickening odour of cigarette smoke is totally lacking from vaping.

Vapes on a Plane

A Guide to Vaping at Airports and on Planes

For many of us, air travel can be more than a little stressful as we take to the skies for business and pleasure in record numbers.

There are the queues to check in or drop off your bag, the security process with its strict rules and regulations, crowded terminal buildings and the mad scramble to get on board.

The stresses and strains of air travel are enough to cause us vapers to reach out for our e-cigarettes for a calming hit of our favourite e-liquid.

Except that in many cases these days you just can’t do so because airlines and airports tend to treat vaping exactly the same as smoking.

Given that airports and aircraft are essentially private property to which the public are allowed access, it is up to those who own or manage such property to set the rules for public access.

So if you want to vape at the airport then don’t be surprised if you are directed to the ‘smoking area’ if you want to enjoy your e-cigarette. It is no use complaining that you are no longer a smoker because it is off to the smoking area with you if you want to vape.

If you are very lucky the airport you are using may even have separate smoking

and vaping areas but expect this to be the exception rather than the rule. In the UK the general rule is that there is no vaping allowed in airport terminal buildings. Interestingly Heathrow, one

We recommend that if you would normally expect to use an e-cigarette whilst travelling, that you investigate the use of nicotine patches or other methods to help you during your journey.

of the world’s busiest airports, hit the headlines in November 2013 when it created a dedicated vaping area in Terminal 4.

But alas that is not the case any more and passengers are not permitted to use electronic cigarettes in any of the airport’s terminals.

What if you are transferring between flights and want a vape (or a smoke if you have not yet switched to vaping) while you are on the ground waiting for your next plane? Well as neither smoking or vaping is allowed in any of the airport buildings, the only solution would be to leave the airport via Passport Control and then re-enter the airport via the normal security channels.

This may not be possible for a number of reasons. Firstly there may not be enough time between flights to pass through immigration and then re-enter through security and get back to the departure lounge. Would you really risk missing your flight for a quick vape?

In addition many transit passengers may not have visas to enter a country through which they are only transiting or airport flight connection procedures may prevent transit passengers from moving from airside to landslide at all.

Getting your vaping equipment onto the aircraft is the next hurdle to overcome. E-liquids are subject to the same rules as other liquids in your hand luggage so they will be battling for space in that one clear plastic bag into which you must put all your liquids.

There should be no problem packing

40 ISSUE 07 VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE NEWS

e-liquid in your hand luggage but your mod batteries are virtually banned from checked (hold) luggage worldwide.

It is extremely unlikely that you will find an airline that will let you vape on board and if you are caught vaping at 32,000ft then you can expect the airline not to be too happy with you. Exactly what ‘punishment’ may be imposed might vary from airline to airline or indeed from flight to flight but do you really want to find out what it may be?

Remember that smoke alarms are fitted to all on-board toilets and if your clouds of vapour trigger the alarms then expect to become the most unpopular person on the flight. Your best advice is not to even think about vaping on a plane. Just don’t do it.

British Airways says it decided to ban the use of e-cigarettes on its aircraft in case the vapour produced was confused with cigarette smoke. You can see why this makes sense as passengers may see those around them ‘smoking’ and then think it is ok for them to do so too.

BA says: “We have a no smoking policy on board all our aircraft and in our airport lounges. This includes electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), as they emit a small amount of mist which can make it appear that a customer is actually smoking.

“We recommend that if you would normally expect to use an e-cigarette whilst travelling, that you investigate the use of nicotine patches or other methods to help you during your journey.”

Gatwick Airport explains on its website: “There are no blanket rules on using e-cigarettes on planes. If an airline does

not make its policy on e-cigarettes clear, you can contact them to ask in advance. However, it is safest to assume that you are not permitted to use e-cigarettes on the plane.

“The best advice is to always contact the airport and your airline before you travel, as well as researching the rules in your destination country, to avoid any problems.”

The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority says: “Since the ban of cigarettes indoors in public spaces, e-cigarettes have become more and more popular. Around 3 million people vape in the UK alone, and while the potential health impact of using

e-cigarettes may still be in question, their use on an aircraft is not.”

According to the CAA: You can take your e-cigarette or vaporiser on board an aircraft, but you won't be able to use it in the cabin (much like a normal cigarette) Unlike a standard cigarette; e-cigarettes, e-cigars, personal vaporizers and electronic nicotine delivery systems all contain lithium batteries, which must be carried in the cabin and not in your suitcase. As well as not being able to use e-cigarettes on board, you can't recharge them during your flight. This is to avoid the risk of the device overheating in the cabin. Similarly to the UK, US airlines continue to uphold strict rules and regulations regarding electronic cigarettes on the plane and in any luggage boarding the plane.

Under the heading “Electronic cigarettes and vaping devices” the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says on its website: “The FAA prohibits these devices in checked baggage.

“Battery-powered e-cigarettes, vaporizers, vape pens, atomizers, and electronic nicotine delivery systems may only be carried in the aircraft cabin (in carry-on baggage or on your person). Check with your airline for additional restrictions. Remove all electronic cigarette and vaping devices from carry-on bags if checked at the gate or planeside.”

So when it comes to vaping on board or while at the airport then this is generally not allowed but travelling with your vaping products should be ok as long as you know the rules to follow.

Coming up in the next edition… Vapes on a Train.

Since the ban of cigarettes indoors in public spaces, e-cigarettes have become more and more popular. Around 3 million people vape in the UK alone, and while the potential health impact of using e-cigarettes may still be in question, their use on an aircraft is not.”

TRABUCO VAPORS & THE HUNT FOR THE PERFECT TOBACCO VAPE

Vaping on that exhilarating e-cigarette to get your nic otine fix has become a normality for ex-smokers. At first it was important getting your nicotine and tobac co cravings but once e-cigarettes raised its popularity, many smokers were converting towards the alterna tive healthier option to unwind.

Strawberry, vanilla, mango, apple, caramel, and other sweet and savoury flavours became some of the many popular flavours for e-liquids. Considering many vapers are ex-smokers and still crave for that aromatic tobacco flavour, Trabuco Vapors challenged themselves in their mission to delivering a variety of tobacco flavoured e-juices; however they understood that cigarettes tasted horrible but pipe tobacco was enjoyable.

Trabuco Vapors consists of five avid vapers: Robert, Brett, Diesel, Travis and Mike. Just like many regu lar smokers, Robert, co-founder of Trabuco, smoked two packs of cigarettes a day since the age of 17. He tried numerous unsuccessful attempts to give up the habit but when he was first introduced to e-cigarettes back in 2012, that’s when he finally realised he can destress himself without risking his life. Robert and his business partners were on the hunt for that rich and authentic tobacco flavoured e-juice, but often failed to find the perfect one to soothe their cravings.

Still searching for that rich tobacco taste, Robert and his colleagues spent months to specifically create their e-liquids to provide vapers with that REAL to bacco pipe flavour. As a result, Trabuco Vapors was launched in 2013 where the cofounders produce their own e-liquids in their juice kitchen located in Orange County, California.

After searching for that correct formula, Robert and his colleagues, decided to proceed with naturally extracting flavours from flue cured tobacco leaves, as well as making flavour extractions from nontobacco sources. Since then, they have consistently used 100% Vegetable Glycerine to create the base of all their ex tracts with no chemicals or alcohol in order to produce e-liquids with an authentic tobacco taste.

One of their most popular e-juices sold worldwide is ‘Blackstar’, which is made from 2012 Flue Cured Vir ginia Tobacco garnished with graham cracker. Robert informs Vapouround of the richness of the tobacco taste in this particular e-juice which many vapers have raved about online. It’s moments like these that makes the co-founders proud to be serving the vaping community with tobacco focused flavours. Trabuco Vapors have experimented creating other flavours, Robert tells Vapouround about their latest coffee fla voured e-juice, winchester, which debuted at the vape expo in paris and was very popular.

Trabuco Vapors also specialises in making wood en mod stands and drip tips to compliment your vaping-gear. Something different yet original, the Cup Caddy originated from co-founder’s background in wooden pipes. As well as their natural hand craft ed tobacco e-juice flavours, Robert and his business partners, hand carve the drip tips and mod stands as a historic nod to the tobacco pipes which developed their profound passion for vaping.

Since opening store three years ago, Trabuco Vapors understand their consumer’s needs in purchasing the right flavour. Many vapers, just like the guys at Trabuco, had previous bad experiences when searching for that right flavour to get the best throat hit without re ducing the flavour. This is why Trabuco Vapors focus on designing the best tobacco flavour for their vaping consumers.

We all know about the health detriments of smoking; cancer and lung disease, to name just two. After years of smoking, Pete, now the owner of Premier E-Cigs, was eager to quit this bad habit. Attempting to go “cold-turkey” was an option but Pete was determined to find a resolution which not only would help his smoking habits, but others too. Many people switched over from cigarettes to vape products due to the absence of the harmful chemical compounds found in cigarette smoke and Pete was one of them. As these little fog making gadgets gained popularity, vaping helped Pete to quit smoking altogether. It took dedication, commitment, and several ineffective attempts to stop smoking but Pete was adamant to continue his smoke-free journey. Once Pete converted to vaping, it helped him realise he could help others too.

Premier E-Cigs

“It worked for dad, it helped him and we wanted to help others”, says daughter, Hayley. As father and daughter, they were persistent in establishing a vape store that would help smokers convert to a healthier lifestyle. In 2013 Premier E-Cigs was launched in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. From selling premium brands of Innokin, Kangertech, and Hangsen liquids to coils,

clearomoizers, and vape cases, Pete and his family were eager to open more vape stores in their local town. Now Pete successfully owns eight Premier E-Cigs vape stores with Hayley and other family members assisting them to manage the stores in both Nottinghamshire and Lincoln. What makes the Premier E-Cigs stores so “premier” is the family spirit behind the business. As a vape store and online retailer, Premier E-Cigs pride themselves on delivering exceptional customer service in the sense that they are the

focal point for advice on vaping for the business. Not only are they vaping enthusiasts, but the owner himself has experienced what it’s like from smoking cigarettes to vaping. From his personal perspective, Pete opened shops to guide others towards vaping considering it changed his life for the better. What Hayley and her family love the most about Premier E-Cigs is how successful the store has become. From previously working in finance, Hayley thoroughly enjoys supervising the 8 stores as she, herself, has witnessed the

benefits of quitting smoking from their customers. Hayley’s mum, brother, and husband also help to manage the family business and since then, the store has increased in its customers and sales in just a short of amount of time.

Premier E-Cigs will continue to remain “premier” even with the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) regulations in force. Hayley doesn’t see this as a negative impact to their business as long as they remain TPD compliant.

Of course some businesses have their ups and downs but there is such a big support and kind hearted family spirit behind Premier E-Cigs that each and every family member has a passion to run the vape stores.

Hayley’s most important advice to potential vape entrepreneurs out there is to have a passion for the business and vaping industry. She mentions, From talking to Hayley about Premier E-Cigs, she informs me that her main motivation to run the company is the support and guidance she receives from her family.

The family has a passion for vaping and helping people who are addicted to smoking and convert them to vaping as a guilt free relaxation.

Weird and TOPWonderful! 10

Here is another collection of weird and wonderful eliquids for your enjoyment. Some may say the names are funny, or puzzling or a little bit off the wall but they work. We love the wonderfully weird names here at Vapouround Magazine.

Bender by Liquid EFX

If you ever wondered what it was like to vape a bender then now you can. Bender is a light balance of refreshing honeydew melon ice pop and a chilled fruit cocktail blend. Light and fruity then. Sounds good.

Crystal Menth by Kraken Original Recipe E-liquid

This is a nice strong menthol e-liquid with a name you are unlikely to forget in a hurry. Refreshing and super minty and definitely not to be confused with any other substance of a similar sounding name.

Smurf’s Piss by Alien Vapor

We have featured Stoned Smurf before and even Alien Piss but never a smurf’s piss until now. It tastes of blue raspberry in case you were wondering. Keep eating those raspberries Mr Smurf.

Unicorn Vomit by Flavor West

It did come as surprise to me that unicorn’s did actually vomit but when they do they spew up rainbows. This is in fact a liquid flavouring for DIY e-juice fans and is a rainbow-like mix of fruit flavours.

Slug Juice by Anna Mae’s Gourmet E-liquids

This makes me think of those slimy trails that slugs and snails tend to leave behind them. Thankfully this juice is nothing like that. It tastes similar to the company’s popular Zombie Blood juice but with an extra fruit kick. Part of the Drip Tease line so it is also great for cloud chasers.

Moist by Vapegoons

This is actually one of my favourite words because it sounds exactly like the sensation it describes. Some people can’t stand this particular word for some reason but it gets a thumbs up from us. It has a tropical flavor reminiscent of pixie sticks and cream so it is ideal for candy lovers everywhere.

Monkey Fart by Phoenix Eliquids

Phoenix describe this as the strangest e-liquid they make and we are assured that no monkeys were harmed in the production of this oddly-named flavour. If monkey farts taste like banana, peanut, mango and strawberry then Phoenix have nailed this flavour but I can’t see anyone queueing up to check in a hurry.

Pink Panties by Tug Sauce

When you put those pink panties to your lips you are taking in watermelon and strawberry cream. You also might get some funny looks from people as you ask: “Has anyone seen where I left my pink panties?” Worth it for the fun factor alone.

Cereal Killa by 9 South Vapes

The main flavours here are fruit cereal and milk. Expect a smooth milk flavor on the inhale bathed over a sugary fruit flavoured exhale that tastes just like delicious fruit loops cereal. This was a real industry game changer and is still immensely popular. A great juice with a great name.

Unicorn Pooh by SXR

I wonder if it is the same people who collect the unicorn vomit that also collect the unicorn pooh? It would save time but I suspect they are different teams with their own unique skills and techniques. Rainbow coloured fruit candy flavour here so who would have thought that these mythical creatures have vomit and pooh which taste very similar?

luxurious, hearty desserts which we have seen in the past few months are taken over by fresh and fruity flavours. This refreshing twist may be due to the sunnier months that we’re enjoying. Sitting pretty on the top of the pile is

a tropical fruit flavour, that is moreish and scrumptious in equal measure – we defy you not to fall in love with the gorgeous banana and zingy pineapple. Enjoy!

We are getting ready for Vapouround Awards 2017 and we want to see YOU there!

We have had so many people asking us about the next Vapouround Awards ceremony that we felt it was time for a quick update.

The most common question we get is “Will there be another event?” and the answer is a categorical ‘yes.’ We had so much fun last time and the feedback we received was so overwhelmingly positive that we will be back. Last year was good but the 2017 event will be bigger and better and is not to be missed.

We will time it to coincide with the Vaper Expo UK show once again. As soon as we have the dates and a venue nailed down, we will give you that information so that you can keep your diaries clear. For those of you who were at this year’s event, the format will be similar although we will have some changes to freshen things up a bit.

The juice award categories may also be tweaked slightly but one thing will stay the same. This is a night out to celebrate the very best of the vaping industry and for us all to come together in a relaxing and fun environment.

We work so hard throughout the year that it is good to take some time off every now and again to just have fun. In fact one of the reasons we organised this ceremony in the first place was to share our passion for vaping and

recognise some of the achievements and hard work carried out from members in the vaping industry.

We are also an industry which loves to help others less fortunate than ourselves

so we are currently working on which charity or charities to support for the 2017 Vapouround Awards.

We love the fact that this is a truly international event where people from all over the world can come together and swap stories and ideas.

It is great to get the perspective of others and see just how passionate everyone is to do their bit to promote vaping and try and get as many people as possible to quit smoking.

As the date for Vapouround Awards 2017 draws closer we will have more information for you so be sure to check out future editions of this magazine and our social media channels.

Finally we are also being asked about getting tickets for the event. As of now they are not available, but as soon as tickets are ready to go on sale we shall let you know but, just like last time, it will be first come first served so don’t miss out.

Let’s build on the success of Vapouround Awards 2016 and, once again, let’s celebrate our awesome, resilient and innovative industry. We can’t wait to see you there.

SCIENTIST

STEPHEN BUSS

After the last issues interview, the UK’s leading TPD expert Stephen Buss is back with another action packed update on what he has been up to in the fight for vaping. His regular feature has put some of the World’s biggest manufacturers and distributors minds at rest and his company is recognised as a true Champion of Public Health.

T obacco P romotes

OH WHERE DO I START!

Another eventful month departs in this ever evolving Vape Industry,

I’ve survived my first character assassination, which was a tad entertaining as I was overseas at the time. It amazes me how armchair “know all, know nothings” find the gall to belittle people’s efforts.

With that aside, this last month has seen me in the throws of obtaining funding to help not only Vape Compliance, but to conduct some structured science to arm the advocates and lawyers with a view to changing how vaping is viewed, as it is still smoking regarding its regulation. The opportunity to consider funding was a bit of a surprise, funny how things come when you don’t go looking for them.

I have been privy to a few high profile documents due out the woodwork, the MHRA by the time this goes to print will be providing another round of guidance, but what baffles me is that this almost comes too late and I wonder why some people’s acts were not sorted out sooner.

The WHO FCTC COP7 toilet reading has also surfaced and on reflection it is no wonder we face an uphill struggle regarding vaping.

My fingers and toes are crossed for a delay in November notifications but that does not mean we should be lapse in our responsibility due to faith in delay. Europe is divided about uploads and importer responsibility and some EU governments like Germany surprisingly

want it all, however, irrespective of this, 20th November is the deadline for more countries than just the UK. So, it has been interesting of late on the scientific front; emissions results and toxicity reports galore have kept us all very busy, burning the midnight oil. Talking of oil, I have been back to America on ISO 9001 duties and a battery of meetings with new TPD clients and state side advocates. Since I last wrote I have seen attitudes change amongst those striving to complete a notification, desperation has now set in and panic mode is widely seen on my travels.

During my time in America I have seen some great progress. We are working with some of the most famous of American flavour houses to upload ingredient CAS and % level of inclusion confidentially to the portal and more importantly allow Toxicity reports to be complied and signed off.

Toxicity is a very special subject to us here at Vape Compliance and we can probably boast one of the best groups of Independent Toxicity scientists going. Our team consists of Dr’s of Oncology, a Dr of Epidemiology and Dr’s of Toxicology who spearheaded a 10-person undergraduate team, which means we can keep up with the throughput of emissions results from the lab.

Public health was the reason why Vape compliance was formed, although we represent the interests of our clients in more ways than one. We are not negligent to the extent of making liquid formulations look as if they can pass

when in the eyes of the regulator. The last thing we want is to update with a substantial modification to these notifications unless unavoidable.

In recent weeks, good news has been received regarding cross borders sales and notification. There are just six member states left to decide on whether a notification made in one member state is valid in another (although it kind of makes a mock of the union that member states can be so inconsistent amongst each other with something as important as this directive).

There are a few reasons for this instability and the main one for is the quality of the nicotine and the acidity of the taste enhancers. These results are also seen with some citrus flavours used commonly in todays top shelf buys. For those into science it relates to protein coating and for those that are not think of a crispy-coated peanut. Talking of nuts, I have eaten my words and put them into practice and been in the lab one last time in helping develop a new carrier to replace PG and VG. I wrote on this subject a couple of years ago and final Toxicity has been received and reported. There were a few reasons for developing a carrier to replace PG and VG, for a start it will stop all the bullshit and confusion as to the long-term safety on inhalation of existing carriers as the one developed is potentially 90% safer!

Problems with the stability, decomposition, and impurity factors of PG and VG have drawn us to researching alternatives to these

Laboratory space is now at a premium and we have noticed some increases in prices as testing requirements have changed thanks to some last minute intervention by the latest MHRA guidance

Some Emissions tests have revealed that some of these trending juices have less shelf life than iceberg lettuce, which indecently, has been left out of the fridge and popped on the patio in Clingfilm to sweat it out on a hot summers day!

known flavor carriers. The long-term problem with the current sufficient carriers is actually one of their shining properties in the medicinal world. The wick away properties, the ability to absorb and carry large volumes of water out of the body, render them in exposures as high as vapers use, questionable at best in a long-term health assessment.

Wicking water away and out of the body in these volumes can have an immuno-suppression effect and over

This product is by in large an aqueous solution, allowing it to be metabolized by the bodies tissues more efficiently. Even though predominantly water, its gel-like substance will pave the way to safer handling of nicotine in its most concentrated form.

So, this means the new carrier will have a dual role in helping this industry move forward in terms of improving the innovation for positive public health benefit purposes.

Now that was a long sentence, I need to pause for afternoon tea.

The carrier vapour production can be controlled through slight changes in the volumes of H20 allowing for thicker or thinner production based on a client’s needs or desires.

Shelf life is exponentially increased and stability of flavor and nicotine concentration is more accurately quantified. So the future is very bright and more than rosy lee.

So Vaporound magazine are truly going global, I have had questions coming in from all over the world of late and some very interesting ones too, I will not bore you any longer and in true fashion get down to some Science and Regulation Q&A.

Hello Stephen, do you have any information regarding product leaflets for E-Liquid?

Many thanks Matt P, Aldershot

Yes Matt, if you can fit all the required information on your product’s label then you may not need to include a separate leaflet in the box or pack. Peel away labels are coming into fashion but they are expensive. My advice is try to get everything you need on box or leaflet and this leaves your bottle relatively free for branding.

time we predict a heavy burden on the bodies main filtering system… the kidneys.

Having discussed the safety of the new carrier with our Head of Toxicity, the initial results have been very encouraging and the inclusion of nicotine and flavour have proved successful on first phase testing trials. Potentially more than 90% safer than PG and VG, it is spill proof, and it protects the integrity of nicotine from citric acid content due to the protein coating so remember that one when it comes to future Med Pub’s.

I have heard we need to display in list form all of our liquid ingredients, is this true?

George Phillips, Bradford

Unfortunately yes, which demonises this product even more as you do not see 4000+ ingredients on the side of a packet of cigarettes.

Well the MHRA’s interpretation of article 20(4) of the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) could of done us more favours, but lets not forget they are a pretty much two person department when it comes to regulating our E-Cig industry, if you didn’t know!

VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE USA 75 FEATURE
“Some Emissions tests reveal that some trending juices have less shelf life than iceberg lettuce”
VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE ISSUE 07 75

Note that all ingredients in the product should be listed on the label where they are used in quantities of 0.1% or more of the final formulation of the e-liquid.

0.1% in my opinion is a bit of a joke due to levels of statistical significance, but then the commission and subsequent twisted interpretations have made best attempts at making a mock of the lengths companies need to go through to obtain regulatory status as this potentially reduces big tobacco competition in this sector. Where a flavour ingredient contains several component chemicals, the MHRA considered it acceptable to describe the ingredient on the label by the name of the flavour, for example ‘strawberry flavour’. For confidentiality reasons companies may choose to describe individual ingredients used in quantities below 0.1% of the final formulation by category, for example ‘other flavourings’.

This advice only applies to product labels, and a full list of ingredients in the flavouring must be included in notifications through the EU-CEG.

Can I take my flavour house to court? They are not releasing CAS numbers to me and I am legally obliged to provide profile details, as you know. What is your best advice? Also if this is a magazine question can I remain anonymous?

Mr Anonymous, Somewhere overseas

especially if the lack of information stops your company from notification and producing product after November 20th for the European market.

I would maybe broach the subject with your flavour house and establish if they own the IP on the formulation you manufacture and sell. Some flavour houses have opened up and started to disclose to us the CAS % levels of inclusion under NDA and transferring via secure FTP upload so do not despair, although slow, things are starting to move and company attitudes are starting to change too.

I’ve heard that if you have a tobacco flavour it now needs a new test for TSNA’s, however when we completed notification this test was not included, do we have to amend our notification?

Mr G Green, London

In a nut shell, yes, and this TSNA test has only recently been included as an MHRA requirement. I am almost fearful of by how much these goal posts can keep changing so close to the deadline. I’m not the only one thinking that these changes and requests are not legal at this late stage based on our clear deadline of November 20th. The labs are full or filling up at a rate nobody expected and if you were unlucky enough to notify early then these changes in requirement do need to be addressed.

I am struggling to understand what is required for notification regarding Toxicological information, can you summarise what is required for liquids and why?

Mr J Shah, Manchester

Toxicology is the most important part of the process in my opinion, it basically dictates whether a product is safe for human use and consumption, straight forward when it comes to hardware and extremely complex when we look at liquid formulations.

You first need your formulation broken down into its individual component parts and to provide CAS numbers for every ingredient as a start including % levels of inclusion.

Once your emissions tests come back from the lab the toxicological research can be completed and signed off per flavour profile.

If any red flags are identified, our Tox team will help re-formulate in order to provide an amendment to any notification previously submitted. Hope this helps!

Now having answered a few of your questions, I am back with the nose on the grindstone, the next two months will fly past, I have very little time to myself as it is and I think come Christmas I will be feet up looking at the next round of challenges that face this industry. Keep your questions coming in, I answer all of them even if they’re not included in print so do not be shy. I look forward to writing my next Vaporound feature.

The Evolution of Vape Part One

E-cigarettes and vaping have come a very long way in a relatively short time. In fact the pace of change is so rapid that even devices which are just a year or so old can look hopelessly outdated. Here we take a look at some of the major landmarks in the history of the electronic cigarette to see how far things have changed. Just looking back at the way things have changed shows how far the technology has evolved and leaves us wondering just how things will look in another five or ten years time.

1963

The first patent for an electronic cigarette was filed in the USA on April 17, 1963 by inventor Herbert A Gilbert from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.

The patent was for a ‘smokeless non-tobacco cigarette’ which was designed to “provide a safe and harmless means for and method of smoking by replacing burning tobacco and paper with heated, moist, flavoured air.”

According to the patent application it had many of the elements found in today’s e-cigarettes.

The patent described how the invention would work saying: “Air may be drawn through a…cartridge which has been moistened with a chemically harmless flavouring preparation, combining moisture and taste following which the moist and flavoured air passes through a (heated) section of the device…so that warm, moist and flavoured air is drawn into the mouth.”

Sadly Gilbert was far ahead of the technological capabilities of the time, his invention never went into production and the patent eventually expired.

1963 - 2003

Er…nothing much really happened at all in terms of e-cigarette development. Smokers smoked regular cigarettes and non-smokers didn’t unless they were around smokers and then they got the ‘benefit’ of their second-hand smoke in their lungs and on their clothes. Nicotine without smoke was still really just a dream.

2002

Talking of dreams, step forward heavy smoker and pharmacist Hon Lik, from Shenyang in north-east China. His father died from lung cancer and he also realised that his own smoking habit was also damaging his health.

PASSED 80 ISSUE 07 VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE FEATURE
AND TIME

2003

Having spent a year perfecting his design, Lik patented the invention and the company he worked for began to mass produce his new electronic cigarettes.

Lik was working for Golden Dragon Holdings which changed its name to Ruyan, meaning “like smoke” once the huge potential for this new invention began to be seen.

His original idea used a piezoelectric ultrasound element to vaporise a nicotine solution in a cigarette-shaped device although modern devices use battery-powered heating elements instead.

This is an extract from his original patent application where he explains the differenvvt parts which make up his e-cig.

“[It] includes a shell; a mouthpiece; an air inlet provided in the external wall of the shell; an electronic circuit board, a normal pressure cavity, a sensor, a vapor-liquid separator, an atomizer, and a liquid-supply arranged sequentially within the shell.

“A stream passage is provided on one side of the sensor. A negative pressure cavity provided in the sensor. An atomization cavity is arranged in the atomizer. The electronic circuit board comprises an electronic switching circuit and a high frequency generator.”

2004

The idea became reality with the production of these new electronic cigarettes, which were shaped like a traditional cigarette (now referred to as a ‘cigalike) got underway.

While the description on the patent may sound complicated, the Hon Lik e-cigarette had just three main components - a battery, a plastic cartridge containing a nicotine solution suspended in propylene glycol, and an ultrasonic atomizer.

2006

By now the invention had proved so popular that the e-cigarettes were being produced around the clock but that was not enough to keep up with demand and it looked like Mr Lik was set to become a multi-millionaire however…

That same year reports in Chinese media began to claim that e-cigarettes were addictive and led to heart attacks which hit sales hard and, at the same time, rival companies in both China and the USA came up with their own very similar versions of his design which led to protracted legal action for copyright infringement.

In addition, the established tobacco companies in China lobbied hard for the imposition of tough regulations which would limit e-cigarette sales.

We will conclude our look at some of the key events in the vaping industry next time. VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE ISSUE 07 81 FEATURE

STORE FEATURE: TEMPLAR VAPES POWER AHEAD ON VAPING CRUSADE

Templar Vapes is a vape store based in Thurmaston, Leicestershire that continues to push boundaries whilst delighting hundreds of vapers in the community. Exponential growth of the vape store on Britannia Way has seen the store expand and undergo an impressive refurbishment after just four months of trading. The space on Unit 5 has been lovingly redecorated, and the new premises boasts brand new walls, ceiling and a stunning refit. There is now a greater space for customers to chill out and vape away their troubles – all the while safe in the knowledge that their favourite e-liquid is within fingertip reach. Templar Vapes is the brainchild of co-founders Chris Mann and Lewis Thompson. It’s an innovative store that continues to thrive through the passion of its owners to serve the vaping community.

The emphasis is on looking after our customers, and we want to dedicate more time to helping them with any questions they may have. By providing a one-toone service, we place vapers at the heart of what we do.

Chris said: “The emphasis is on looking after our customers, and we want to dedicate more time to helping them with any questions they may have. By providing a one-to-one service, we place vapers at the heart of what we do.”

The business paring of Chris, a decorator for over 20 years, and Lewis, a former Virgin telecommunications engineer is a match made in vaping heaven. After using vaping to help them quit smoking, the entrepreneurial pair were keen to spread the word about vaping being a great smoking cessation tool. They were confident their business idea would get off the ground – what they

weren’t prepared for, was the astounding success of their first vape store.

Lewis said: “I’ve been vaping for nearly five years and I wouldn’t have been able to quit smoking without the help of e-cigarettes. When we first started vaping, there was nothing in our local area to help us make informed choices. Now, we’re able to give back to the community by providing a space for vapers to relax in cool surroundings, where they can also buy great products that don’t cost the earth.”

flavour stakes. It is however, more than just having great e-liquids to vape. The owners have carefully cultivated the perfect vape space, and the freestyle graffiti artwork adorning the walls is just another draw for people to visit. The thoughtful name of the store gives some clue to the ethos of Templar Vapes. Taking the lead from Knights Templar who fought oppressive regimes, Templar Vapes hope to support the local vaping community by providing vaping guidance to those in need.

Amy Falkner is a vaper and frequent patron of Templar Vapes. She said: “The Templar Vapes re-launch was absolutely fabulous packed with loads of laughter and vaping. I love visiting Templar Vapes. It’s very welcoming, there’s always five star customer service and I couldn’t recommend them highly enough. The refurbished interior looks amazing, well done Chris and Lewis!”

David Tate is another party attendee, who said: “The great ranges of e-liquid and vape gear means visiting Templar Vapes is always a pleasure. Rob Fern from Steep House reopened the shop and did some giveaways. Everyone also

loved the graffiti by Darren Ample Wood. Hats off to Templar Vapes for delivering yet again!”

The owners have exciting plans for the brand and aim to open another store next year. Their main driver is to help people quit smoking, and by raising awareness of the different options available, they aim to educate new and seasoned vapers alike.

Why the vaping movie Vape Wave should be required viewing for every smoker still alive

Billed as “the first and most thorough movie about the electronic cigarette’s incredible worldwide phenomenon,” Vape Wave is not to be missed.

I can’t think of a single vaper who would not enjoy this film. It is informative, witty, laugh-out-loud funny in places, brilliantly shot and edited and with a couple of awesome sci-fi sequences added in for good measure.

But director Jan Kounen has not made a film specifically for the vaping industry - the target audience he has in mind is made up of current smokers. In fact this film should be required viewing for every single smoker on the planet, because it has the potential to save more lives than any graphic government health warning found on a packet of fags.

How many smokers pick up their packet of cigarettes, see the warning “Smoking Kills!” and think: “Oh my God. I had no idea. I must stop this immediately?”

Probably very few indeed, if any. But if you are a smoker and you watch this film then you might just be persuaded to quit smoking and give vaping a go instead.

You might do so for the very reason that this movie does not attempt to bully you into giving up smoking. Such an approach simply does not work and Kounen, very sensibly, has opted not to go down that route.

Instead you are presented with a number of vapers, all former smokers, who tell their own fascinating stories about their journey from being smokers to being vapers and the positive impact this had had on their lives.

I suspect Kounen wants the reaction from smokers in the audience to be: “Hey this could work for me too. I can still get a nicotine hit through vaping but I don’t have to gamble with my life any more.” Vape Wave premiered in Paris on

September and is currently being toured throughout France in a series of screenings which is due to end in Nantes on October 13.

Initial feedback suggests that smokers who have seen the movie have already tried vaping for the first time based on what they learned in the movie.

Should this trend continue, and there is no reason why it should not, then everyone who was involved with this project will have reason to celebrate. This is a documentary but not in the traditional sense of the word. Taking its roots in “gonzo journalism”, it is made up of interviews, archive footage, humour, and fictional scenes picturing the vape world’s future.

Director Kounen - a passionate advocate for the vaping industry - is in front of the camera for quite a lot of the time and, indeed, he is central to this film’s success.

His passion for the subject comes through from start to finish to such an extent that, for the first time in my life I regretted never having smoked.

Vapouround Magazine writer Patrick Griffin gives his thoughts about Vape Wave - a featurelength movie documentary about the electronic cigarette and the global industry it has spawned. Vape Wave is currently on a cinematic tour of France and plans are currently underway for it to be released throughout Europe and further afield. This brilliantly creative documentary will be loved by vapers but is really aimed at smokers

up smoking to that I can later switch to vaping instead.

I will just have to be content in knowing that this movie will certainly help many existing smokers make this exciting, life-changing transition for themselves instead.

Speaking early on in the film, Kounen says: “In late 20th Century sci-fi films, cars fly, robots have souls, man has colonised space but he still smokes tobacco rolled in paper.

“Tobacco consumption seemed part of the future. Writers and film-makers never imagined the collapse of the powerful tobacco industry, that the cigarette, this lethal invention, would disappear to be replaced by a less harmful way of inhaling nicotine.”

The film also briefly runs through the (relatively short) history of vape and spends a lot of time on what is perhaps the most pressing issue facing the vaping industry right now…regulation, or more accurately, over-regulation.

It explores how the very act of classifying e-cigarettes and e-liquids as ‘tobacco products’ and regulating them as such is already putting people out of business and is likely to prevent smokers all over the world from switching to vaping - a

move that could cost countless lives. Perhaps even more shocking, at least for me, is how the film highlights how the big tobacco companies deliberately hid the links between smoking and cancer for years.

As scientific research began to find links between smoking and cancer, tobacco companies did all they could to delay public awareness of the health dangers associated with smoking and their stalling campaign worked.

It has been estimated that 8,000 billion more cigarettes were smoked in the USA alone because of the delay in educating the public about the dangers and this led to the deaths of around 6 million smokers due to the ignorance of the health dangers involved.

This film is not all about the shock factor though. The stories about former smokers who are now vapers are both uplifting and inspiring while there is a liberal sprinkling of humour injected

Having watched this movie I felt that I was missing out from experiencing the transition from being a smoker to a vaper but I am certainly not going to take up smoking to that I can later switch to vaping instead.

throughout the movie.

Vape Wave also contains the most memorable description of vaping that I have ever heard. When one contributor is asked to describe the physical act of vaping he says: “It’s like giving a robot a blow job.” One cannot do anything but laugh at that graphic imagery.

Vapers will enjoy this movie, and from that point of view it is likely to be a huge success. However the true measure of this film’s success will be how effective a tool it can become in helping smokers quit cigarettes. This is where its true potential lies.

Vape Wave opens with the following warning: “If you’re a non-smoker stay a non-vaper. If you are a smoker, or know smokers, watch this film.”

That is excellent advice. Bullying smokers into quitting does not work.

Educating smokers about a far safer way of experiencing nicotine is far more likely to succeed.

* In the next issue, we speak to Vape Wave director Jan Kounen and find out how this project has changed his whole approach to how he will portray smoking in his movies from now on.

DIARY OF A VAPER

Hi, my name is Alex and I’m here to tell you my story of how I transitioned from smoking to vaping.

I was your typical 10-20 a day smoker and had been since the age of about 14. Like most, my smoking stemmed from peer pressure and the need to fit in. What I didn’t realise, is that this quickly became an addiction. I struggled on and off for years, thinking of reasons why I didn’t need cigarettes – but I always found myself returning to smoking time and time again.

When a family member had a smoking related illness, it really affected me. The impact of this news was immediate and I quickly moved onto vaping. A couple of lads I used to work with started vaping and it seemed to work for them, so I followed suit.

I started on your typical eGo pen on a high nicotine juice. I felt much better after only a few weeks of vaping. My chest wasn’t so tight and my cravings were nowhere near as bad, especially after food and at night.

I scoured the Internet looking for new devices and vape stores for advice. Eventually my local vape shop set me up with some vape gear. My first real mod and tank wereas an Innokin Coolfire 40w with a Sub Tank Nano. It was then I realised that I actually really enjoyed vaping, as the Innokin was more satisfying than the eGo pen. It was soon after that I quit cigarettes completely.

Vaping has literally improved my health; I can breathe more easily, I feel better and it has made me a lot happier too. I swiftly moved onto higher powered devices and bigger tanks, whilst simultaneously

lowering the strength of nicotine. After comprehensive study and research into OHMS LAW battery safety, I started on my first mech mod and RDA. Since then I have steered heavily towards mechs as they are my preferred choice of vape.

I’m using the Endless Mech 18650 with Endless RDA and DC Vapes Fresh to Death. I am also on my Cuboid with the Cleito RTA (The Yorkshire Vaper the O.C) and my SMPL mech with my Tsunami. This is with Cuttwood’s Mega Melons.

I am fortunate in that a lot of my friends vape, so for me, it can be quite social. I have a lot of friends on social media in various vape groups. This is fantastic, as I know where to go when seeking vaping advice.

When it comes to family, most of them don’t really like vaping or see the point of it. My argument that vaping is better than smoking falls on deaf ears. It’s more than just smoking – it’s become a pastime for me too. I can spend time building coils and researching the different styles and metal types for vaping.

Vaping in Worcester (where I live), has taken off remarkably well. There are a few vape shops in Worcester, and I have only been to one vape meet so far (at my local ‘Vape Sense’ store). It was fantastic, and the social factor was great. We had everything from cloud competitions to prizes and giveaways. More importantly, it was a great chance for likeminded people to meet and socialise and vape together.

The Vaper Expo was an amazing event and the amount of people attending was staggering. I couldn’t believe just

how many different vendors were there. I tried some amazing juice lines and made quite a few purchases. The NNA advocate gave an informative talk about where we stand with the TPD which I found to be extremely helpful.

As for the TPD, I know full well what the UK is in for. While the restrictions are a lot worse in other EU member states, the UK will be impacted. We can but hope that a post-TPD world will be fair to vapers.

My advice to anyone who is considering smoking is this. WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE? I can’t say that vaping is for everyone, but over two million people in the UK alone can’t be wrong. Every vaper has gone through the exact same thing as you have. I’m sure I can speak for vapers when I say that you won’t regret it. If it helps you get off cigarettes that can only be a good thing.

How Vapouround Magazine Uses Social Media To Keep In Touch

In East Midlands, born and raised, in Derby where Vapouround was made.

Ready to vape and play, it was time to take it to the sky where we can tweet with the birds who fly, where our friendly vapers on FB scroll through filtered vape imagery on IG.

So lets make some clouds tonight ‘cos this vaping is ridiculously keeping us alight!

Consider it jibber jabber if you will, but stuff like this gets a crowd of people

interested. If it looks good and sounds good, people are going to share it on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Social media was a way to pass time, something the “cool kids” were doing.

It was a way to socialise, to find out what’s new with everyone and to make plans for the day.

Well, its 2016 and social media has evolved. It’s now one of the biggest and most effective methods of communication and whether its

interacting with friends, colleagues, or clients, most of us cannot get through the day without checking what’s new online. It’s a great tool to share information, in fact it’s the best tool if you want to find out about the latest news on vaping or the best juices to try.

Here we look at how Vapouround Magazine uses social media to keep in touch with everyone from regular readers to the wider international vaping community.

100 ISSUE 07 VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE FEATURE

When Vapouround Magazine launched just over a year ago, we took our vaping business to social media for the magic to happen. With a whopping 11,000 followers on Instagram and 4,598 followers on Twitter, Daniel French (Frenchy) has accomplished to gain 2,146 likes on Facebook since July 2016. Frenchy manages Vapouround’s Facebook account and updates the vaping community about TPD regulations, NHS guidelines about e-cigarettes, and other vaperelated news that interests our readers.

Currently satisfying his sweet tooth with Two Gunz Custers Vanilla, Frenchy addresses both US and UK regulations on e-cigarettes on Facebook to vaping population across the world. Motivated to gain more likes, Frenchy interacts with the vaping public every couple of hours or so. He said: “Most people like or comment on our pictures after 5pm and get sharing when we do our prize giveaways and competitions.”

The more Facebook friends share posts, the more likes you can get. Sharing and connecting on social media gets people involved and that’s what we at Vapouround intend to do. We want you to feel included and be a part of the vaping community.

Instagram

Katie Loomes, who manages the Instagram account, has increased the follower count to an incredible 11,000 in the last 12 months. She invests a lot of time on the account and regularly posts on a daily basis. “It’s really important to engage with our followers online,” explains Katie.

She goes on to mention that the best way to inform vapers about the magazine’s competitions is through social media, “it instantly grabs their attention. It’s different to Facebook,”

Katie continues, “you can’t share content on Instagram like you can on Facebook

but you can get people to like and comment on your posts.”

Persevering to gain more followers on the account, Katie continuously engages with followers and other vape companies and interacts with them via Instagram. She said: “If people send in pictures of them reading the magazine, I’ll be sure to post them.” Besides deciding whether X Pro III or Nashville filters highlight vape pictures, Katie thinks it’s an excellent way to deliver exceptional customer service online.

Katie added: “I’m on instagram 24/7 so if someone messages the account or decides to comment, I can write back straight away. That way we’re developing a mutual relationship on our passion for vaping.

“From interacting with customers online, we, as a vaping community, can help each other and immediately address the needs of our fellow or, potential vapers.”

YouTube

What’s so great about promoting Vapouround Magazine on social media is the relationship we form with the vaping community via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. We can share the latest vaping news and upcoming vape events with our fellow vapers.

With so many followers online, Vapouround Magazine intends to continue launching out on other social media platforms such as, YouTube. What’s going to be really exciting about this account is that we will be looking to post videos from you. Feel free to take videos of your favourite e-juices, favourite mods, how to build your own coil and we’ll select a few to post on our YouTube account.

Frenchy, who will be managing our YouTube channel, expects there to be a variety of videos. Frenchy said the idea is for it to be “an informal chat show with smokers and vapers which will be a good way to get them to interact with one another and make them aware

of vaping.”

He explained the YouTube channel will also be a good way to inform the community about upcoming vaping events and other topics saying: “For example, we plan on taking videos of the Vapouround bus which is going to Vaper Expo UK -The Return at Birmingham’s NEC in October and we will be vlogging about it for the people who can’t attend.”

Social media is a large platform and similarly, vaping is a massive community that interacts mainly, online. With just a click of a button or a simple touch on your smartphone, you can reach millions of people all around the globe. It’s like living a different life online, one that charms different characters and summons different communities.

Twitter

Twitter is just one of the biggest social media platforms to communicate with people. Whether it’s for sociable or professional purposes, the fastest and convenient way to reach somebody is via social media, and Twitter is an excellent tool for communication.

We find that announcing our fantastic competitions, biggest tradeshow collaborations and posting vaping news on Twitter, invites our vapers interests instantly. Not only does it provide us with the chance to interact with members from the vaping community, but we can inform our readers with the latest updates on Vapouround and vaping itself.

Considering the vaping industry is continuously growing rapidly, so are our Twitter followers. Since joining us mid-year, Frenchy has increased our Twitter followers by an incredible 4,734. He explaiWns “It’s easy to communicate with vapers online so whenever I find out about some interesting vaping news, I like to let our followers know.”

To stay social, tweet us, friend us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram.

VAPOUROUND VISITS AMSTERDAM

After finding out that the originallyplanned vape show in Amsterdam had been cancelled due to the implementation of the TPD I wondered whether anything would take its place. The organisers wasted no time in scheduling a conference instead which took place at the Sofitel Hotel on July 29 and it was to be an event crammed full with very useful information about the vaping industry.

I was a little apprehensive at first as this was my first vaping conference as such but we were immediately put at ease once we arrived and were greeted by friendly, polite and smiling staff who explained what would be taking place. It is to the credit of the organisers that they put together something so well at such short notice and once we were told about the topics being covered at the conference, after registration we took our seats and things were soon underway. We were firstly introduced and welcomed to the conference by Gregory J Conley the President of the American Vaping Association. The topics covered in the conference included the current economy of the

cigarette market and its potential to grow across the EU and, of course, the Tobacco Products Directive which is a topic where everybody has a view. Speakers also covered business building practices within the industry, the fact versus the fiction of the science of e-cigarettes, litigation in the US and across Europe, e-cigarette and vapour being categorised as a tobacco product. There was specific mention of the TPD in the UK, vaping legislation in general and its impact on the global vaping economy and lessons to be learned from what has been called ‘the war on vaping’ in the United States.

Daniel Irwin-Brown from ECigIntelligence provided statistics on the e-cigarrette market across the world and facts from his presentation included that the most developed region was North America with a high percentage of 57% vapers. Europe came in second with 33% vapers and the Asian countries made up the last 7%.

Michael Young from Vape Emporium made some very interesting and factual points on the TPD and how it has affected his company. He also touched on the procedures Vape Emporium have

had to follow to be up to TPD standard. We were also very lucky to see 10 minute clips of the forthcoming documentary movie A Billion Lives produced by Aaron Biebert. As of yet there is still no set date for when it will be premiering in the EU but when it does I would definitely recommend every vaper to watch it.

I found the conference to be very educational and it answered all the questions that I had regards to the regulations imposed by the TPD in Europe and the FDA in the US.

With the TPD and FDA being such a grey clouded area it really shed light on the issues surrounding regulation of the vaping industry.

The conference brought home to me how this legislation will impact on so many businesses within the global vaping industry and that only the strongest will make it in our ever more increasingly regulated world.

So please everyone, let’s see the competition as potential partners and let's stick together as the vaping community we are already are and Vape On!

VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE ISSUE 07 109 EVENTS

This event was set in the beautiful colonial city of Richmond, beautiful architecture and vaping came together for the VPX expo.

As ever the VPX events are always well organised and run like clockwork. I have noticed that vape shows in the states are starting to become smaller and smaller and this was no exception. There certainly seems to be a glut of shows in the US and this is bound to have an impact on the number of shows both buyers and exhibitors can commit too. This was the last event to be held in the states before the FDA regulations took effect, and a lot of the juice companies

had their latest juice productions on show ready for sale before the regulations started. Just a couple of the new brands on show included Mellow Buddha from Naked Fish and Drip Forge with their new vape treat Nanner Puddin’. It was great to see so much ingenuity going into the production of new products. Footfall at the show was pretty pedestrian and a number of vendors scheduled to attend were not present, I assume that this was due to the proximity of the impending regulations and people working towards getting the last of their products ready and submitted to the FDA. This was also a great time for the advocacy groups to relay information to people on life after regulations. With guest speakers Stefan DIdak and Brittani Cushman taking to the stage to deliver vital information. One of the highlights of the show for me was meeting with a local company called Great Falls Distribution who invited us to see their newest shop, we gladly took them up on their offer and it certainly did not disappoint. I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks for your hospitality.

We arrived in Paris to a range of roads that were impossible to cross, including a barrage of trams coming from every direction.

There were cars driving like it was going out of fashion and Harley Davidsons zooming down the pavement but yet a spectacularly individual and elegant city was coming into sight.

The last time I had been to Paris I was about ten years old and it was Disney World, so I didn’t have a clue what to expect this time around.

I was pleasantly surprised by this vast and vibrant city, brimming with media types, businessmen, beautiful people and of course the coolest people on the planet – vapers - all getting ready for Vapevent 2016.

We were the official media partners for the show again, a show which was open to 10,000 people, and I can honestly say I had a blast. Four of us at Vapouround Magazine had the pleasure of staying for nearly a week in this fast-paced city which reminded me of a more quaint and fashionable London.

The event itself was outstanding, the organisation was perfect and it was a relaxed, friendly environment, brimming with the largest brands, to the up and coming juices and the innovative stands.

We brought boxes full of magazines and Show Guides which were handed out to everybody at the show and available from our stand.

The event was busy the whole way through, but not so busy that you got your stand lost. Everybody got a chance to be seen and this was a b2b event so it was a nice way to make new contacts and exchange ideas.

The organisers were extremely helpful and the whole thing ran smoothly and without a hiccup.

Credit for this must go to the organisers who created an environment and layout that facilitated both an enjoyable yet productive atmosphere.

I can’t praise this event enough – make sure that you get this expo, and indeed any expo involving the organisers, on your calendar.

Whilst in Paris, we were invited to

‘A Billion Lives’ film premiere and after party, where we were greeted with champagne, cheese platters and vape experts.

This was a fantastic film, extremely informative and moving - starring the model and face of the Winston cigarettes who switched to vaping after twenty or more years of smoking.

This was a must see film for everyonenot just for vapers or smokers.

Vape Expo Poland: Great Show, Great People and a Huge Mix Up At McDonalds…

We landed in Warsaw on the Thursday morning, ready for the set up day. When we got to the the expo hall, there was no sign up yet but we just followed the vape trail. As soon as we noticed some guys vaping outside we immediately knew that we were in the right place.

As soon as we got into the hall we met up with Anna, the lovely lady in charge of the proceedings. She greeted us with a big smile and she was full of enthusiasm, just the kind of woman you needed to take charge. She was a big help and answered all the questions we had given her, in fact her whole team was more than helpful.

The place itself was lively with people running around everywhere - building stands, putting juices away, filling tanks, making coils and getting drippers ready for people trying samples. There was also the odd few half asleep, just chilling, having a vape and probably tired from their long haul flight.

There were companies from all over the world including the USA, Poland, Russia,

and Canada, to name just a few. We quickly went along and set up our stand and put some magazines on racks and some on the main desk at the front ready for the eagle-eyed businessmen and woman.

well-deserved food. We found a nice place in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of the town centre. The food was great, the beer to also was very cheap and, in fact, we went there the following day for more food.

Day 2 the business day

We woke up early and filled our stomachs ready for a busy day ahead. By the time we arrived at the expo hall there was already a bit of a queue waiting for the doors to open. One was a mod maker who made mods out of pokéballs, which is strange but they looked pretty awesome none the less. There was also a guy from the USA dressed in traditional Japanese clothing who had a knuckle duster mod he had made himself.

As soon as we finished, we went back to the hotel via the crazy taxi driver and then got ready to go out and have some

I spent most of my time at the show talking to everyone from small to big time business owners. There must have been at lest 50 stalls from all over the world there, all ranging from juices to mods.

I came across some amazing flavours and some good quality mods.

EVENTS

The theme with most of the juices over there was of some kind of cooling or menthol - it seem to be the most popular but with the hot weather it went really well and I was given loads to take back for reviews and for myself to vape. Everyone was friendly and welcoming and were only happy to talk about their products and juices and by the end of the day I think I had tried every style of flavour of e-liquid there was. So after a day of shaking hands, handing out businesses cards and

distributing magazines, our feet were killing and our stomachs were rumbling so we headed off to McDonald’s across the road where something went terribly wrong with my order. Maybe it was the language barrier but I ended up with four burgers, large fries, cheese and bacon dippers, crisps, ice cream and an iced-tea to wash it all down. I paid for it so I ate the lot but I have never felt so full and I did regret it a little bit afterwards.

Day 3

A massive queue of vapers were waiting patiently for the doors to open as we arrived - all were eager to try new products and new flavours of e-liquid. I spent some time there talking to people surrounded by massive vape clouds which were constantly in the air. People were using an array of different style mods from mec mods all the way down to simple starter kits and everything in between.

Around dinner time there was a cloud competition going on and this was

great fun to watch. Next I found a coil workshop which I was grateful for as I had to change my coils from my dripper. After some help from a Russian guy’s tools, I quickly made up a new coil and I was vaping again. It was also good to see everyone’s way of building which gave me some good ideas.

There was also a trick contest, guys practising their skills in the corner of the hall and lots of giveaways. People love free stuff and there were bottles and t-shirts flying in the air with vapers running from one stand to another to get their freebees. This was a mad sight and at one point I thought one of the stands was going to come down with all the people running to it.

That evening we headed straight into town to eat and have a few beers in an old Irish bar in the old part of town where we sat and reflected on the weekend including all the people we met and the things we had seen.

We all loved our time in Poland and I look forward to returning next year.

The Triad Genesis came in a quaint little burlap-style bag with the asMODus logo and atty name silkscreen printed on it. Inside the burlap bag, the atty and spare parts came in frosted-effect plastic bags. As seems standard now, you get a bunch of spare O-rings, grub screws and thumb screws with an allen wrench and a spare glass for the tank.

The Triad Genesis has an ingenious design with a hollow screw that holds the positive connectors in place. You remove the thumb screw from the top to access the hollow screw which doubles as the filling hole. There is ample space for building on in each third of the deck, with the wicking holes perfectly placed for wicking vertical coils. I’ve tried both horizontal and vertical coils in this and it

is definitely easier to build with vertical coils.

You have great build potential with the massive 2mmx3mm post holes, a total diameter of 24mm for the whole atty and a height of 50mm from drip tip to connector. The tank holds around 2ml of juice which comes in handy, especially with a triple coil setup that drinks juice faster than a Hummer with a leak.

I have experimented with different coils, wicks and juices and discovered I get decent flavour from the Triad Genesis but it really excels at vapour production, a small hit from this generates quite big clouds which took me by surprise on my first hit.

The Triad Genesis comes apart into so many pieces it is a breeze to clean it

out, also mixed in the bag of spares you get two plugs to seal off up to two of the segments to easily swap between 1, 2 or 3 coil builds.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reviewing this atty and feel that it is one of the better RDTAs I have used and my only want is for bigger air flow holes as the Triad Genesis occasionally whistles while taking a hit.

The machining on all parts is faultless and you can see the care and attention that has gone into the design and build of this atty and with all things considered I think a score of 4/5 does this proud.

Along with the mod, I was given this awesome triple coil RDA. It was a shock when I opened it up, having never had an RDA like this so I was excited to start building. The build quality is awesome and very well designed, with a nice protruding 5 10 pin with lots of air flow and big chunky Delrin chuff cap for added heat displacement. Even with three coils running 1.7 ohms it did not get hot around the chuff cap. I enjoyed building on this atty a great deal as they are a lot of different options you can choice from. I found that making 3 coils twisted 28 gage 6 wraps runs about 1.6-1.7 ohms worked best for me. The cloud production was second to none, although the flavour lacked taste due to

the large air flow. I I soon adjusted it to my preference which was about half way open for nice flavour whilst still giving you nice clouds. This atty is great for experienced builders and enthusiasts or people that like to collect, as it is very different and would look great in anyone’s vaping collection.

Build quality- 5/5 Looks- 4/5 Flavour- 3/5 Cloud production- 5/5 Overall I really like this atty. Top marks to asMODus for bringing out something new and exciting as everyone else follows the crowd. I give this a 4/5

I’ve spent a few weeks with this beautiful gold (black also available) mod now and I love it. It has quite a kick to it and a decent amount of customization options. The design with deep, high-quality engravings is undeniably eye catching as I have received many “what mod is that?” comments while carrying it around with me. The buttons are flush with the mod which is great for the aesthetics and the screen is on the bottom of the mod to hide it while your mod is just sat on your desk.

The Plaque is powered by a GX-150HF chip, takes two 18650 batteries (not included) and has a pass-through for charging hidden under the battery door. While powered on, pushing the fire button five times in succession shows you a menu with various options and

modes. I especially like that you can inverse the colours of the display and even flip the display 180 degrees to make it readable no matter which hand you’re inclined to use. Within this menu you also get to pick between Power, Temp Control, Wave/Pulse, TCF and TCR modes. Selecting TC mode gives you the option to pick between Ni200, SS316 or SS317, just to cover all bases. I’ve been using this mod with the asMODus Triad Genesis RDTA and I’ve been vaping Dinner Lady’s Lemon Tart juice. The kick I mentioned earlier was quite a surprise. I started out at around 40w like I usually do and it hit me with such clout I was literally breathless. Now I’ve adjusted, I use it at 100w on a 0.17Ω triple coil build with no problems. Using the Plaque is a great experience, a little

bulky but that way you notice when its not in your hand or pocket. The Plaque fits nicely in my small girlish hands with no problem and the fire button is comfortably positioned whether you prefer to fire with thumb or finger.

Conclusion

After these few weeks with this mod I can honestly say that I feel lost whenever I don’t have it with me, and I’m not sure how I managed this far without such a great mod. I’m not going to say this mod is perfect but it most definitely isn’t too far off. I would highly recommend this mod to anybody that can afford the $180 (£135) price tag and will offer up a good, strong.

I have here the asMODus 180w touch screen in red.

On first impressions it looks great, I have the metallic red version awesome paintwork, nice clean design with just one big button laser etched with the asMODus sign on there.

The back cover has the asMODus sign chiselled in there so you can tell they have taken great pride in this mod which is very well designed and fits great in your hand, even for a lefty like myself. It

has a new touch screen which is a nice touch (no pun intended). Although it can be fiddly at first you will soon get the hang of it and it is very simple and easy to use after a while. Simply slide down the screen and touch what you would like to change, for example, touch the wattage display and the put your finger on the plus symbol.

I really did put this mod through its paces. I used it for over two weeks, I even took it abroad to the Poland expo

and the only problem I could find was the touch screen can be fiddly at first but after a while I was fine.

This mod takes two 18650 batteries and can be charged via USB port on the front or by simply removing them and using an external charger

EDITOR’S JUICE OF THE MONTH

Pacha Mama (Mango, Pitaya and Pineapple) By

Well what can I say about this vape?

I am not a reviewer, I am not someone who has extensive knowledge on everything vape, but I do get asked to try many juices all over the world, and I know what I like.

Honestly speaking, I started off by trying many different juices, smiling politely and saying: “Ooh yes that’s really nice.” That might have worked in the beginning, but as time has gone on I have been a bit more critical and honest with everyone, which I think most people appreciate. Up until now I have never found a vape that I thought – wow that’s got to be my everyday vape. I have a simple taste and mentality and when I quit smoking over a year ago now I quit through a basic cola flavour juice, and never wanted to or needed to vape anything else. This rather conservative approach to vaping was probably more down to the fact that I was scared to try anything else for the fear of starting up cigarettes again. I suppose this was my safe juice so to speak.

I would often indulge in the fancy flavours on a night out after a few drinks, but never as an all day vape. This remained the case until I came across Charlie’s new juice Pacha Mama. I was at a convention in Las Vegas and I ran into Brandon Stump, owner of Charlie’s who said to me: “You must try our new line.”

After trying 20 new lines from various manufacturers previous to this, it probably wasn’t the most exciting proposition I heard all day, although that being part of my job, I thought I must do what I have to do.

So he loaded up the Pacha Mama, mango, pitaya and pineapple flavour, three flavours that I would never choose to vape in a million years. Firstly mango is not something I like anyway, pitaya is something I have never heard of and pineapple I generally love, but I’ve tried

so many bad pineapple flavours that I try and steer clear as much as possible.

I took a blast from the mod, and to my absolute surprise it was gorgeous. The blend of the three flavours was perfect, to create a smooth vape that wasn’t overpowering. I thought I better have another hit on this. It was moorish, made me want to keep going and I honestly couldn’t put it down.

I did something that I never do, and asked for a couple of bottles to take with me, as I knew I had found my new everyday vape. Very quickly I used up my two bottles and I was on the phone once again asking for more.

I know this is not the sort of review that we usually give describing the elements of the juice, how it is on the inhale and exhale and so forth, but for me that’s not what I wanted to get over to you.

I simply wanted to say that this is an amazing quality juice, made by a very reputable California-based company, and in my mind the flavours and quality make me want to vape it time and time again.

This is why I haven chosen Pacha Mama mango, pitaya and pineapple as my Juice of the Month and I will continue to vape it on a daily basis until something else comes along to replace it but as it has taken over a year for me to find this, I can’t imagine its going to be any time soon.

Charlie’s Chalk Dust

Bunny

All Psycho Bunny juices received are 3mg, 80VG/20PG and came in 30ml child-proof pipette bottles. The bottles themselves are clear glass with foil print labels with a background colour scheme to match the flavour. There is a black bunny with claws and an evil cheshire cat grin, standing beside a puddle of blood and meat cleaver with Psycho Bunny written in blood behind. The juice name is scrawled across the top with a scruffy font.

Twister

Twister smells so amazing, a mouthwatering blend of citrus fruits that leaves a tangy feeling in your nose. It’s almost like Sprite or 7UP with a hint of orange for good measure. It’s hard to pick out which flavours are most prevalent on the inhale, I can taste lemon and lime but it’s just a citrus hit. On the exhale you get a definite taste of orange and a touch of lime. The aftertaste is lime all the way, so no complaints from me there. The throat hit, on the other hand, is absolutely noticeable, but not in a detrimental way as it feels like something gently brushing against the back of your throat. All in all, a great tasting juice but the throat hit may make it too harsh for an all-dayvape. 3/5

Melonade

Melonade smells exactly how you would think, melons and lemonade, but you actually smell the fizz of the lemonade. The taste is incredible too, and that coming from someone that’s not a melon fan. You get just the melon when you inhale, which tastes nice enough on its own, but then while exhaling you get the fizzy tang of the lemonade bubbling over your tongue. The lemonade stays around for the aftertaste too with a little melon coming back to join the party. There is a very mild throat hit from Melonade that feels more like its stroking rather than hitting your throat. 3/5

Grapegasm

The initial smell is almost pure grape but I detect a bit of bubblegum and menthol in there too. The first hit is delectable, gorgeous grape and very subtle menthol mixed beautifully for the inhale. Exhaling gives me a hint of the bubblegum and something fruity, but not the grape (blue raspberry according to the flavour card). The grape comes back for the aftertaste just to taunt you and make you want another hit, but that’s not a problem at all since there is no throat hit from Grapegasm. Another great juice from Eco Vape. 4/5

Blue Retro

The smell of this took me right back to my childhood in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It smells exactly like the wrestling brand bubblegum I used to buy from the corner shop. The taste just reinforces that nostalgia, all I can taste is 5p bubblegum, which sounds like an insult but it really isn’t. There isn’t much difference in taste between the inhale, exhale and aftertaste but there doesn’t need to be. The nostalgia hit is far more powerful than any flavour could be and with zero throat hit this may well be the juice that all my money is spent on from now on. 4/5

O J

The smell is so divine, yet exactly what you’d expect by the name, fresh squeezed orange juice. The flavour is so beautiful too, again not much to say other than orange juice. Such a well balanced taste, a strong orangey flavour but not overpowering, whether inhaling, exhaling or the aftertaste you really can’t go wrong with O J. I think this will compliment your morning coffee and breakfast perfectly and would also make a great all-day-vape thanks to the nonexistent throat hit. Easily one of the best juices I have reviewed. 5/5

The juice I tried was 3mg nicotine, max VG and 30ml.

I have tried a multitude of donut flavoured vapes, and have recently enjoyed the experience of trying the selection of various donut vapes from a company called, quite simply, 'Donuts E-Liquid'. They have created a strawberry jam, a blueberry jam and fruity cereal donut flavoured vapes. The first of this line that I had the pleasure of trying was the strawberry jam flavour. I was very excited to try it out because (at the moment) I really am in to donut vapes! I first discovered this juice when a friend of mine was vaping it and my nose

picked up on the smell of this beautiful, fruity, sugary doughy cloud - I had to try it!

After trying this juice out for the first time perhaps a few days ago, it soon became my all day vape.

On inhaling, a wave of strawberry jam hits your mouth, followed by the unique flavour of crusty donut batter (quite difficult to describe as an eLiquid!) These two components are united by a mild and delicate milk element that really smoothes out the juice. It was just the right balance of sweetness, creaminess and fruitiness- something that cannot be said for many juices on the market. When breathing out, especially when using an RTA/RDA, the clouds are crazy! Even being a Max VG juice, you still won't expect this much vapour production. In my eyes , and fellow 'Cloud Chasers', this is definitely a plus!

As I mentioned earlier, the first time I was introduced to this juice was when my friend was exhaling a gargantuan cloud of Donut's Strawberry Jam, and when I exhaled people immediately wanted to know what flavour I was vaping on.

To be fair, the first time I tried this juice, I was a little disappointed. I had heard so many positive things about it, and had high hopes. I received it about 2 weeks ago, and tried it on the first day. It was fine – nothing special, so I decided to let it steep a while. So today I gave it a second shot, and I am glad I did! When I opened the bottle, an incredibly welcoming scent of strawberry and cream met my nostrils and when I vaped it, it was even more delicious and intense!

At around £15 for 30ml, this is an average price for a premium e Juice. Though the problem is that it runs out rather quickly, particularly since most people who are vaping this juice tend to be using a sub-ohm set up (a resistance less than 1.0Ω). However I noticed that it is possible to buy bottles of 120ml of this magical elixir for about £39.99 online. All in all, I was impressed with this eLiquid from Donuts. Flavour was top notch and vapour was great. It was a coincidence that I discovered it, and I’m glad that I did!

Today I am reviewing The Milkman eLiquid from the folks over at the Vaping Rabbit. This product comes in 30ml or 120ml bottles, with nicotine levels of 0mg, 3mg, 6mg.

The packaging is amazing, the bottle is presented in a mini white milk carton shaped box. It made me think of milk straight away- just by the way it was presented. Some might find it a tad gimmicky , however I found it to be a nice touch. The liquid inside is syrupy and has a golden hue.

On inhaling, you can really see why The Milkman has been so popular in the vaping world. There is a fantastically smooth strawberry, complimented with an even smoother milky cream. When you exhale, you can really appreciate the perfection of this juice. All of the flavours blend together, creating the ultimate strawberries and cream vape.

Also, as a max VG juice, you get incredible cloud production whilst still retaining a full-bodied flavour. Retailing at about $18 for 30ml, this juice may be a bit on the expensive side, but

in my opinion it is well worth it!

The only bad thing about this juice is that a 30ml bottle runs out so quickly, however I just found out that they produce 120ml bottles – which is a really great thing for those of you who have The Milkman as your all day vape, as it should last quite a while!

All in all, this juice was amazing, and I would recommend it especially to those who appreciate sweet or dessert flavoured vapes. It was so smooth and satisfying and will keep you coming back for more!

necessary for all juice manufacturers.

Flawless is a Californian vape company that has an ever increasing fan base from all over the world. They have an interesting line of juices that mainly come in 60ml bottles and are created with subohm devices in mind. They are available in brick and mortar vape shops, as well as online.

They are constantly selling and devising new flavours, all unique and incredibly high quality. I think it is great that they sell 60ml squeezy bottles as it really simplifies the action of refilling a tank or dripping on an RDA.

The bottle itself includes the ever important variation of warnings, something that I believe should be

Hot Mess is the first eJuice I have tried from Flawless and I hands-down loved it. With such an interesting and idiosyncratic flavour profile, Hot Mess really delivers in more ways than one. It comes in 60ml plastic bottles that feature a twisty tip rather than a unicorn bottle or a dropper. The different nicotine strengths that are available are; 0mg, 2mg, 4mg and 6mg – all ideal for sub ohm devices and for dripping. I have tried this juice out on an iSub S at 0.5 ohms and at 40watts, as well as on an RDA running at 0.19ohms and at 80watts, both performing extremely well, as I find occasionally tastes and experience of juices can differ when using different set ups. I found it to be very satisfying on all aspects from the two devices.

In my local vape shop, a 60ml bottle sells for about £19.99 (26.33 in US Dollars) on average, which, in my opinion, is great value, as it will last you a long time – no matter what set up or method of vaping you use.

The main attraction in terms of flavour, is a soft, subtle cinnamon. It is extremely refreshing to finally try such a mild cinnamon that does not irritate or overpower the senses. Adding to this warmth, there is a

gradually making it’s way into the UK market, and a 30ml bottle retails for about £16.99.

It comes in 0mg, 3mg and 6mg, and has a VG percentage of 80%, so (along with the name of the company) I was expecting impressive clouds.

contrasting undertone of creamy vanilla bean that accentuates the already mellow nature of this juice. It is akin to a smooth, sugar coated churro with vanilla ice cream, that other companies have tried to create, but have not come as close as Flawless has to being the perfect vape.

This juice is good when using a tank, but it is fantastic when used on a dripping atomiser as it produces very satisfying vapour clouds that will leave you surrounded by billowing fog!

I would strongly recommend 'Hot Mess' to people who like sweet, dessert flavours, or if you are looking

Intensive Cloud Unit - Flatine

Flatline is, essentially, a chocolate mint flavoured eLiquid from Intensive Cloud Unit, an American company that makes a line of 3 liquids - all unique and interestingly packaged.

It comes in a sort of prescription styled plastic container, along with various and relevant health and safety warnings. Both the outer container and the actual 30ml glass dripper bottle, in my opinion, do not feature graphics nor colour schemes that could be taken as appealing to children, also, both have child resistant caps that even I have trouble opening!

This juice hails from America, but is

I am not a huge fan of minty vapes, however, the mint flavouring used in this juice was mild and chalky, rather than intense and overpowering. It is blended nicely with a creamy dark chocolate element that is not exactly full on chocolate but is rather shadowed by the minty cream.

I actually found this flavour to be unique and very pleasant, the mint coupled with the almost bitter dark chocolate made me have the sensation of an after dinner mint melting on my tongue.

The inhale is cool and cleansing, and whilst exhaling, the chocolate really ‘pops’ and is exceedingly tasty.

Using my mech mod, with a build at 0.2 ohms, vapour production was absolutely incredible! Billows of cloud flowed out, covering the room in a delicious-smelling fog, that really made this juice, in my

eyes, a truly fantastic take on a chocomint!

I was certainly impressed with Flatline, and my original opinion of not liking minty vapes, was totally quashed !

Overall, I would give this juice a solid 4/5

Review by Matthew Coupland

These juices have been sent to me by Bad Drip in a fashionable takeout style bag that includes two 30ml bottles. Jam, being the first one which entails a gooey-like grape smashed berry jam scent and the second bottle, a creamy peanut buttery crushed goober fragrance. Both e-liquids can be vaped on their own or the traditional American way by combining them both to make the popular peanut butter and jelly (PB&J).

My Jam

Straight out the bottle, a sweet aroma of sweet berry jelly fills the air of my office. It aspires me to be like the Americans and spread it over some buttered toast. The first vape I inhale is awesome! Sweet, sticky berry jelly that lingers on your tongue. The exhale is more smooth and creamy so it does not feel sickly at all on its own. This is a very nice all round juice and I’m truly looking forward to mixing this with Gooby as the throat hit tastes perfect.

Gooby

The first feeling you receive as soon as you open the bottle is a very strong smell of peanut butter. My girlfriend (who is a peanut butter fanatic) immediately spins around to face me and her eyes widen in curiosity. As I put some of the juice on my dripper, I offer it to my girlfriend and she accept without any hesitation. The first thing I notice was the smell of peanuts and lots of them! The exhale is more of a crunchy, biscuit taste and as I glance towards my girlfriend, her eyes light up with excitement. As she is more of a peanut butter fan, this is going to be one of her favorites for sure! As for me, I much prefer the jam flavor but I did vape this a lot and did enjoy it to some extent. For others who are peanut butter fans, you will love this for sure but even if you’re not a fan of nuts, like me, you should definitely give this a try with all that in mind I give this a 3/5.

Mixing the two: My Jam and Gooby I decided to be creative and combine the two juices together because I’m pretty sure these liquids were destined for each other. First of all, I’d like to mention I was not expecting the combination of flavours but together, the sweet jelly mixes in with the buttery peanuts perfectly to make an awesome flavor overall. Now I see why the Americans indulge on the famous PB&J! It’s absolutely lush, trust me, all Brits need to try this. I will be spreading peanut butter and jelly on my sandwiches for sure. This juice is a perfect morning wake-up vape for me or as I like to say “wake and vape” but I’m sure even vaping this all day you’ll never get bored.

The Weirdos Creamery

These bottles come in an amazing box shaped like a beat up van with The Weirdos Creamery splattered along the side and the juice name dripping off the bonnet. The bottles themselves are standard 30ml bottles with a child-proof pipette cap. The label wrapped around the bottle has a colourful swirling effect with a skeleton in the centre printed in foil.

Wonderland

The smell just screams caramel ice cream mixed with strawberries. Imagine eating a delicious strawberry ice cream cone whilst walking along the beach. The amazing taste of caramel ice cream presented through is so beautiful on the inhale with the strawberries following close behind. On the exhale there is a frosted cereal flavour that stealthily sneaks in and sticks around to leave an aftertaste that leaves you craving for more. There was no presence of a strong throat hit no matter how big of a hit I inhale which made Wonderland an incredible smooth and tasty juice, no question in my mind that this is one of the best flavours I’ve tasted in a while. 5/5

Moist

All I can detect with a whiff of this juice is pineapple, there is something else there too, possibly cherry but I can’t quite place it. While inhaling I get an ice cream taste with pineapple tones in the mix, but for me moist really shines on the exhale where the subtle cherry comes through. It leaves a very sweet aftertaste but the flavours seem to merge together and I can’t quite place the flavour of the aftertaste. There is a moderate throat hit from moist, not unpleasant but not as smooth and subtle as other juices. This juice is a good vape but not quite hitting my taste buds in the right way. 3/5

Key Lime Cheesecake – 80VG/20PG, 3mg

At first all you get when you sniff this juice is a blast of lime and a hint of pastry. That first hit, wow! The lime hits you hard and sharp at first with the pastry aftertaste creeping in to compliment the lime. While exhaling there is a touch of creamy cheese that eases the sharpness of the lime and the Key Lime Cheesecake taste is complete with the tangy lime sticking it out to leave a gorgeous aftertaste that leaves you craving for more. The mild throat hit from the juice perfectly matches the flavour to make the whole experience delightful. Definitely an all-day-vape, possibly my new favourite. 4/5

Custard Cream

What a beautiful scent, absolutely on point, this smells exactly like a pack of custard cream biscuits so I couldn’t wait to vape it and hope the taste is on point too. Exactly like I had hoped, inhaling offers a scrumptious custard flavour with a creamy taste immediately following it up, while on the exhale the custard is prevalent but backed up by a sweet biscuit flavour to complete the taste. With just a light throat hit, this juice brings with it is only noticeable on big hits, smaller hits are just as smooth as silk. Yet another very strong juice from The Yorkshire Vaper. 4/5

Straight of it’s a creamy, custardy smell with a pinch of sweet fruits. The inhale gives you a nice creamy custard, similar to the sort you were given on your school dinners back in the day, while on the exhale you get sweet fruits. The aftertaste is more of

the custard with vanilla, after a while the passion fruit creeps up on you and you can feel the sweetness tingling your lips. A very smooth juice with pretty much no throat hit at all. All round great vape will work well all day in your tank or dripping atomiser. Memories of school pudding with sweet fruits 4/5

The Godfather

Smells like a fruity chewing gum, very fresh and sweet.

The menthol is quite strong, a little bit overpowering but the blackcurrant is very much there, along with the blueberry but having such a strong menthol /minty taste adds just a little challenge to tasting the fruits. Perfect though for the all day vaper who likes a menthol kick as it will not bore your taste buds because the fruits will creep up on you throughout the day and the aftertaste is crisp, fruity and refreshing .

Very smooth vape with no noticeable throat hit. Menthol at first with fruits creeping through 3/5

Winchester – Max VG, 3mg

The first whiff, to a coffee lover like me, smells like heaven. Coffee beans shine through so strong, yet beautifully aromatic, it’s like shoving your face into a bag of fresh coffee.

On the first hit the coffee flavour just caresses your tongue, such a gentle touch of coffee and no overpowering taste like a lot of other coffee juices. The aftertaste sits nicely on the back of your tongue for a few seconds, just like you’ve taken a sip of fresh ground coffee. With such a smooth flavour the throat hit, if you can call it that, doesn’t actually hit your throat, but taking a long vape you feel the hit on your throat getting progressively stronger but still not in an unpleasant way.

Winchester is a good, solid vape that I can say with confidence, could easily be used as an all day vape. This is easily one of, possibly even the best, coffee juice I’ve tasted. 4/5

This tickled my nose straight away with blueberry when I opened it. However this did not smell like any other blueberry juices I have smelled before, it reminded me of the carnival as a kid then bang it hit me, cotton candy. The first inhale you get a mild blueberry flavour but as you vape, it gets sweeter and the exhale brings you cotton candy, not very sweet though. In my opinion I would like it to be much sweeter. Nice juice, but that is a good thing because who can eat cotton candy all day, even as a kid I couldn’t do that, nice throat hit too. 3/5

The Blackberry smell hits you when you open the bottle and reminds me of hard boiled sweets. The taste is such a subtle blackberry taste that just dances on your tongue teasing your taste buds. TVL or The Vape Lounge as it’s otherwise known is an American company that produces and sells everything from mods and batteries to their own juice collection called #VapeSauce. Today i’m sampling two of these premium E-liquids that come in 120ml bottles only. Let’s hope they taste good otherwise there’s gonna be a lot of juice left over.

Strawberry Cheesecake

The name says it all here really. A creamy, biscuity cheesecake with swirls of strawberry layered throughout. It’s a classic flavour that the vast majority of people are gonna get along with due to it’s lusciously creamy flavour.

The strawberry flavour is what hits you first, sweet and fresh tasting, definitely top quality flavourings at work here. No artificial taste whatsoever.

The cheesecake is a very complex blend of cream, vanilla, biscuit and I think youghurt to give it the slightly sour taste assosciated with cheesecake. Combined the two components suit each other very nicely and in my opinion the juice isn’t too sweet to stop it from becoming an ADV contender.

Nothing in this E-liquid is going to blow your socks off but it’s a pleasant vape that’s a good take on a classic flavour 4/5

If you’ve never tried a youghurty vape before they carry a slight sour tone that contrasts really nicely with the sweet, fruit flavours. In this case, as I’m sure you can tell, blueberry is the fruit of choice. As with the previous juice the fruit

flavour is really fresh and real tasting. The yoghurt is creamy and adds a fair bit of sweetness along with that slightly sour tang that I have been seriously craving of late. I can definitely see Blueberry Yogurt being really popular due to it’s fresh taste and fantastic blend. It’s simple and delicious! 5/5

Popz – 70VG/30PG

First impressions of the bottles are that it looks great. Nice and clean art work really stands out on the shelf and comes with a twist top cap for easy dripping. Luckily, I love cherry since this e-juice carries a pungent cherry scent. However, you can really smell the blue raspberry creeping in there, I just could not wait to drip this and have a vape. This particular juice really stands out among the crowd, I love it! it’s like having those ice pops from your childhood; so fruity and sweet that its delicious.

The blue raspberry lingers on the end of your taste buds and leaves your mouth with a satisfying aftertaste. Moderate throat hit just enough to have a great vape with plenty of flavour. Never mind an all day vape, I’d say

this is an all year vape and would recommend this to any vaper I know. A solid 5/5 from me.

These juices come presented in small boxes resembling a miniature cigarette box with the logo and 3 lines in a rainbow colouration effect. The bottles themselves are child-proof plastic dripper bottles with the same design as the box.

Vanilla Pudding - 80VG/20PG

A lovely smell of vanilla is the first thing you notice with a subtle hint of something extra that I can’t quite put my finger on. This juice works in the strangest way where vaping at lower watts reveals that ‘something extra’ in the scent is a rice pudding flavour, while at higher watts the vanilla really shines through. With a little trial and error I found the sweet spot to get a hit of both flavours together is around 42-43 watts. The aftertaste leaves you reminiscing about rice pudding from your school cafeteria.

As for a throat hit, there is none that I noticed until I had been chain vaping for a while where a mild throat hit came

through. This is a nice sweet juice, but I could see it becoming a little sickly if used as an all day vape but all things considered it stands at a strong 4/5

Fresh Kick – 60VG/40PG

The smell is very reminiscent of toothpaste or chewing gum and the smell is so strong I have difficulty detecting if there are any other flavours in the mix. The first hit was an unexpectedly strong and cooling menthol that literally took my breath away. The first hit was enough for a minute with the menthol lingering long enough to keep the cooling feeling with every breath afterward. There was a mild throat hit, but I may just not have noticed it fully as my mind was focused on the impact the taste had on me. Menthol lovers, I think you’ll struggle to find a stronger menthol hit. I do like menthol myself but with the intense wakeup call I got from this juice, I’m inclined to give this particular e-juice a 3/5

You open the bottle and your mind thinks “Hmm grape.” Now in my opinion grape is a tricky flavour to get right. No one apart from the odd few have got it right. It’s either way too sweet or very sickly. So I wicked up my coil and dripped it right on there. Boy was I surprised! The awesome people at Twelve Monkeys, I don’t know how you’ve done it but you have surely smashed it. Finally, a grape flavour that’s not too sweet and not too sickly! To inhale it, it’s like the best grape I have ever tasted but wait there’s more, did I mention there’s apple too that was a perfect surprise; apple and grape. The exhale is an awesome sweet with a taste of sour apple and my god, it’s amazing the two flavours complement themselves perfectly to make one awesome e-juice.

Like most of my reviews I’m using a mech mod with a dripper and the throat hit is perfect, just enough to satisfy my craving without overpowering the taste. If I’m completely honest, I’ve vape like half of this bottle whilst reviewing this juice because I loved it so much. 5/5

without even opening the bottle, I knew it was going to be a tropical mix of some kind. My first thoughts were “Well that can’t be right.”

I can hear the rain pitter pattering on the window, so I sit back in my chair and drip some more and my mind wanders off to the tropical island.

Mangabeys

First of all, the name catches my eye instantly; Mangabey. For those who are unfamiliar with this word, please allow me to enlighten you. Mangabey is a type of monkey from the tropic islands so

Usually, tropical mixes smell very sweet with some kind of banana but no I was wrong it was creamy mango and I was in love immediately. As soon as you vape this you get a very smooth creamy mango with a sweet pineapple taste that dances on the tip of your tongue. The exhale is more sweet with the guava mixing in with the pineapple to make an awesome tropical vape that drifts your mind away to sunny beaches, palm trees and cheeky monkeys. But then my wick gets dry and I am back in my office and

This juice is amazingly smooth, creamy and sweet all at the same time, top marks once again Twelve Monkeys, sweet and creamy with a perfect amount of throat hit. 5/5 Kanzi

This juice Is a lovely mix of strawberry and watermelon that deserves much praise. The vape you inhale from this juice is just awesome! It’s very fruity and refreshing, the watermelon is predominant in there although with a perfect amount of strawberry mixed in on the inhale. The exhale, however, gives you an added fruit just a little touch of kiwi will leave your mouth watering and while your tonsils will still be buzzing from the strawberry it will leave you very satisfied. Yet again, I cannot think of a single reason why you should not buy this juice it is simply perfect in my eyes and with that being said, I will always carry a bottle in my personal stash since the throat hit is so smooth and a great flavour overall. Twelve monkeys have done it again and made a juice that is simply divine! Top marks guys, keep up the good work 5/5

PART II: Vaping May Reduce More Harm Than We Initially Thought

In an article written by Jacob Sullum, titled “Royal College Of Physicians Says E-Cigarettes Can ‘Prevent Almost All The Harm From Smoking” he writes, “Large-scale substitution of e-cigarettes, or other nontobacco nicotine products, for tobacco smoking has the potential to prevent almost all the harm from smoking in society.” He quotes from the RCP that: “Promoting e-cigarettes…and other non-tobacco nicotine products as widely as possible, as a substitute for smoking, is therefore likely to generate significant health gains in the UK.”

Considering what the RCP is claiming, just imagine how much more harm can be reduced in society by the emotionally-stimulating, physicallyhealing, distraction-generating, socially constructive art of Vaping. Seemingly, drug seeking behavior is either a product of boredom, a lack of having something in life to be passionate about, a coping mechanism or a necessity to physically function properly. Once an addict is able to get over the issue of physically functioning properly, then boredom and a lack of passion are what are typically left to conquer. Vaping can certainly be the antidote to those two misfortunes.

Recovery.org suggests nearly all of the same lifestyle changes I typically come across in my research that so many others who study recovery from addiction also recommend. Furthermore, these suggestions are as follows: Learn new strategies for stress; Find new social outlets; Spend time with new people; Find new ways to spend your free time; Change the way you feel about yourself; etc. Breaking habits often requires changing the way you think, as well as changing behavioral patterns that have developed over the years.

All the suggested actions to take are backed by years of research and are all highly regarded as effective strategic

methods to employ within the academic community, specifically psychology, especially social-psych. To maintain and remain loyal to the personal goal of improving one’s own lifestyle, they reiterate some familiar guidelines for all those unfulfilled and poisoned human minds who seem to be struggling from substance abuse. When you decide to change, all the most important components to focus on during the process of change consist of: the way you deal with stress, who you allow in

your life, what you do in your free time, how you think about yourself. How then, are these particular features, which I’m highlighting, relevant to the theoretical framework I’m currently analyzing as a social research question? Is the social phenomena of vaporizing e-liquids for a nicotine delivery method truly going to be something we can rely on as a harm reduction approach? From the websites I briefly examined, those in particular that were filled with information for addiction recovery assistance were

coincidentally claiming the same helpful tips, and for good reason.

At the forefront, is the simple explanation that all these specific suggestions are definitely easily accomplished by simply partaking in vaping and immersing yourself in the cultural lifestyle. The recommended actions for individual to participate in, at least go hand-in-hand when contributing as a vape enthusiast who evolves into a functioning member of the vaping community. Throughout my time spent as a vaper, I’ve naturally evolved into a more advanced vaporproduct hobbyist and extreme advocate who began with gas station quality cig-alikes, but now currently own 7 mods and 12 sub-ohm tanks/top pieces. Many of my top pieces, consist of an RDA style, so I’m constantly building new coils, rewicking and dripping new tasty e-Juices. This is actually a necessity since specific eLiquid manufacturers send me their juice-lines to sample and write reviews about.

Quite frankly, I spend so much time cleaning and correcting all my hardware devices, it’s often a chore, but an enjoyable chore that keeps me busy. Whether it’s my ipv5 or ipv D2, whether

it’s my 50w Sigelei or my Kangertech Kbox 120. No matter which device I’m focusing on, when it comes to keeping up the maintenance of all my products I use to Vape with, I’m so busy all the live-long-day.

What’s important to remember is that all these devices I own took time to acquire with a vast amount of research conducted and constant state of reflection. All of this effort requires the process of deep thought about a product’s reputation, specifications, price range, compatibility, durability, functionality and overall quality involved with each vape-accessory. Even going as far as teaching yourself to grow more familiar with the backstory on a company’s business practices are defined by whom else the product may be affiliated with.

During the stages of “vaper-evolving,” one should certainly expect to experience a transformation protocol that allows the arrival of a strong sense of advocacy about vaping in general. Unless of course you are apprehensive and concerned about getting involved with advocacy due to a prior or ongoing legal issue or criminal record.

Furthermore, if you happen to like a particular item in which you’re contemplating on whether or not to purchase it, suddenly you discover that the businesses affiliated with the manufacturing of this product also have been linked or associated with a number of nicotine-based eLiquids that are known to include labels considered to be highly appealing to children. As a loyal advocate for the vaping community and altruistic trailblazer among the vaping industry, you will know that this type of marketing or branding approach is inappropriate, unprofessional, inexcusable, and the harm being caused by one single business is undoubtedly counterproductive to the ultimate message vapers wish to embrace. Need proof of this no-nonsense approach to vaping advocacy? All you need is an internet connection and the ability to spell these specific words: “What do vaping advocates want?” Or, perhaps you could also demand that the search engine “Define Vaping Advocacy.” Either way, you will come across some very intense, passionate groups of vapers who take copyright infringement, intellectual property theft, and childappealing labels as a serious threat to the values we believe the vaping industry must adapt to.

Designing logos or labels that can immediately be categorized as a depiction that appears child-friendly, an underage eye-catcher or teen enticing lingo all have absolutely no place within the sacred realm of vapelife. At first, I simply did not understand

the desire to

go after or “call-out” other Vape-related businesses, but after realizing that child safety is the main argument used by the FDA to justify their harsh regulations, I began to understand just how important this was. Regardless, this is certainly a topic worthy of an entirely separate article.

Recovery.org, highlights a meaningful quotation that fits perfectly in with the concept that vaping serves as an activity or lifestyle which can combat substance abuse. When discussing the road to recovery, it is clearly stated, “Do activities that you enjoy and that make you feel valid and important.” So, if an addict were to embrace vaping, advance themselves as a vaping hobbyist and then become passionate to the point of advocacy, this behavior will surely allow them to feel valid and meaningful. Vaping can give one’s life, ultimate purpose. Given all of this information, there is one man I’ve had the pleasure of having a discussion with about my theoretical concept who is a business owner within the vaping industry as well as someone who is approaching the solution of harm reduction through vaping as well as a “STOP Heroin” campaign. This man is Jay Tower, owner of eXtreme vApes out of Louisville, Kentucky. Jay is in recovery from heroin addiction after the untimely death of his son’s mother, Nicky Vigna (1992-2013). He continues to stay clean while growing his business. Therefore, Jay serves as just one individual who can attest to the art of vaping assisting harm reduction in more than just tobacco abuse.

When all’s said and done, the vaping industry will not disappear. Sure, due to it’s economic threat against Big Business, such as Big Pharma and Big Tobacco, the capitalist leaders of industrial corporate conglomerate will attempt to eradicate the smallbusinesses within the vaping industry.

However, harsh government regulations will undoubtedly only create a Black Market. The system tries to demonize vaping by claiming their overreach of authority is justifiable because they are taking a firm stance by devoting their position on regulations for the sake of child safety. This is clearly an attempt to misdirect the focus of their true intentions.

Yet, not very many of our advocacy groups in the vaping community would agree that regulations need to be so strict. I therefore suggest we continue to research the concept of vaping being a harm reduction approach as the primary purpose for its existence. Additionally, I urge researchers and social scientists to conduct research on my sociological theory that Vaping can help assist opiate addicts transition back to a healthier lifestyle.

There are countless societal conflicts we will never be told or never learn about and for numerous reasons.

I can attest to this because I spent nearly 10 years in college, undergraduate and graduate schooling where I must admit I gained 75% of everything I know and all of the skills I have acquired to learn more . You must search beyond the misinformation your local news station tends to report or even the national news channel on TV for where you absorb your information.

Gathering pieces of information from outside sources is vital to understanding how the system you live in actually operates. What exactly is it that the powers that be cherish and worship? What is most important to our leaders? Is it our freedom? I’d like to think so, yet I’m not so sure. After all, legendary

Sociologist Emile Durkheim once wrote that “Liberty is, itself, a form of regulation.” People are far more obedient when they believe they are free to earn their own living, but that does not necessarily define the essence of freedom.

Those who wish away vaping are merely envious since they are still seeking their route to righteousness when ours have all been laid before us in the form of vapor. The Bible states: “Life is like a vapor. Here in an instant, gone the next.” This can be interpreted in many different ways in which I must refrain and stick to our main topic. I’d just like to highlight that I became aware of that Bible verse around the time of my own Mother’s sudden and tragic passing on November 4 2015. She was 59. Regardless, discovering purpose and believing in a cause are certainly necessary for an overall healthier well-being. My Mother taught me hope and faith by her own example as she was indeed full of life and filled with joy. Believe in something, find your passion, remain passionate, believe in yourself and good things will eventually come your way.

A member of the vaping advocacy group, VAPERSArmy, Dan Stegner shared his view with me. “We all know about the expression, once an addict always an addict, this is because it’s true. So, it’s all about finding something safer and alternative to become addicted to and while I’m a chain-vaper, still, now my doctor gives me a clean bill of health assessment every six months whenever I see him over the last 4 years I’ve been vaping. It is so obvious, as a recovering addict from opiates, vaping has helped me recover in a number of ways.”

The concept of cognitive dissonance is described as when we’re more inclined to soak up lies we agree with than deal with truths that make us question ourselves and go through the unpleasant process of holding two contradictory ideas in our heads. An understanding that the mere presence of something dangerous isn’t necessarily a sign of genuine risk (for example, you’re exhaling vapor right now, NOT smoke). It is very difficult for the majority of people to accept or fully comprehend the introduction of shades of grey into the common black-and-white viewpoint many hold, which consists of viewing “addiction is a bad thing.”

The problem is that harm reduction is so much more of a difficult concept for others to buy-into; it’s a tough act to sell, plain and simple.

Meet the vape company which proudly employs women in high-level roles

FLAVOR MONSTER ENSURES THAT WOMEN DO MUCH MORE THAN JUST LOOK PRETTY AT VAPE SHOWS

The vaping industry is often seen as predominantly male-dominated with the role of women confined to being ‘eye-candy’ at shows and expos. However if you think that this is all that women can contribute to the world of vaping then you would be very much mistaken. It is true that women can work as vape models, or “juice bitches” as they are sometimes called, but the story of women and vaping does not end there. Here we talk to Laura Riggs, one of the co-owners at Flavor Monster, who encourages women to play a pivotal role within her business.

VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE: How are Flavor Monster striving to cater for women in the vaping industry?

LAURA: At Flavor Monster we are empowering women to be successful in the vaping industry. Our head mixologist is a woman, our Director of Marketing is a woman, our retail manager is a woman, and the list goes on. We want women to know that they have a place in this industry and not just as a consumer. There are plenty of high level jobs that are done best by women and we are the working model of this.

VM: What do you think about women in the vaping industry?

LAURA: I love seeing strong powerful women in vaping! I understand that T&A

(tits & ass) has ruled our predominantly male-dominated industry and that’s why women are objectified like they are. I feel like they don’t have to be. I think that some of the best companies use smart marketing that appeals to everyone and not just the 18 year old bro. I think that women have the power to change the industry, (I don’t mean make it all sunshine and rainbows) women are smart and have great ideas when it comes to marketing and advertising.

“I think that women have the power to change the industry, (I don’t mean make it all sunshine and rainbows) women are smart and have great ideas when it comes to marketing and advertising.”

We need more women who want to innovate the industry and really make it an all-inclusive industry and less about “my buddies girl vapes because he does.” There are plenty of female smokers out there who want to make the switch but feel like it’s just like the car industry and that no one will take them seriously. I’m here to tell them “we want you and we need you!”

VM: So, when did you start vaping and what was your greatest motivation to start vaping?

LAURA: If we’re going to be completely honest, I have the worst sweet tooth! As I write this I’m eating birthday cake (it’s no-one’s birthday, I just like it), so vaping is a way to get my sweet fix instead of eating an entire cake! To be honest, I never smoked and I’m an avid runner so my motivation came from my family. My sister switched over to vaping about a year ago after smoking for 14 years, and my boyfriend and business partner with Flavor Monster, Jarod, also smoked for over five years and switched to vaping about four years ago. Watching the drastic and positive changes in their health, happiness and general lifestyle gave me motivation to contribute to others ability to pursue quitting smoking. Flavor Monster has become a way for me to help others achieve their goal to quit smoking, and it’s something I personally take a lot of pride in.

VM: Why did you get into the vaping industry?

LAURA: When I started vaping, there weren’t many companies on the market. The companies that were any good, really focused on fruit and I was looking for bakery! I tried company after company and they all tasted the same,

quite chemically and not true to the flavour they were describing. At that point I thought, if they can do it so can I! That’s when I started to DIY my own personal use. It took a lot of time and energy to really understand how flavours work together, proper steeping processes, and developing intricate flavour profiles, but after a lot of bad batches, things really started to click. Right about then was when I realized making e-liquid was something I found a lot of joy and

fulfilment with, and carried that passion into Flavor Monster.

VM: When did you start in the vape business?

LAURA: In 2014 I was part of a team that manufactured a premium e-liquid line. Back then the word ‘premium’ actually carried a standard with it that meant high quality ingredients, mixed in a clean environment, with quality bottling and labelling. Over time, the word ‘premium’ became heavily overused and devalued.

Along with that, the hardware in the industry started to become much stronger and was quickly pumping out products that created such a better vape experience. Think the original Orchid vs the TFV4’s, Herakles, Crown’s etc. While the hardware game was and is great, the downside was that these devices began drinking juice, so your $20.00 30ml bottle that used to last you an entire week was now maybe good for a day or two. After a while our customers started coming to us and saying that they loved the flavour of our premium line, but that it was way too expensive. That was how Flavor Monster was born.

We wanted to make vaping cheaper than smoking again, and knew that if we still kept the high quality we would have people fall in love with our liquid and our company! Flavor Monster started in 2015 and after a few short months it became clear that we needed to expand our operation.

We opened the Flavor Monster retail location in 2016 and built out an ISO 7 equivalent lab to make our liquid. We are now expanding our lab space and automating lab processes as well as marketing and general business operations. We are very proud of the work we have accomplished because our goal when we started was to create a great product, at a great price, while providing a great customer experience along the way. While we do not claim to be a perfect company, we do claim to always put our customers and employees first, and trust that our hard work will pay off. To this point, we have been right so far.

Vapouround Magazine will be catching up with Laura in our next issue to hear all about the challenges of working as a female manager in the vaping industry and she will also be discussing her e-liquid lines.

Vapouround magazine staff take personal branding to new level

Employees get company logo tattoos as public display of loyalty.

In most workplaces there would be looks of total revulsion or horror if the boss, even in jest, suggested that his staff should get themselves permanent tattoos featuring the company logo.

However three staff members here at Vapouround Magazine thought it would be a rather good idea and took their boss up on the offer.

It actually all started as nothing more than a jokey comment when the company logo came up during an informal works discussion.

Vapouround Magazine editor Paul Caplin had been talking about a recent show he had attended and remarked about how many people had told him that they found the logo very striking and attractive.

When other people in the room told him they had also regularly heard similar positive feedback he said, half-jokingly: “If anyone would like to get a tattoo of the company logo then I will pay for it.”

A number of hands shot up and the loyal employees all headed off to a local tattoo parlour with £140 of the boss’s money to pay for the body art.

First up were sales manager David Turner and logistics coordinator Daniel French, 32, who both decided that their inner forearms would be the ideal place to promote Vapouround Magazine.

David, 42, said he had absolutely no hesitation in getting the tattoo and said he was very proud of his new ink.

He said: “I had this done because I am proud to be part of Vapouround Magazine and the vaping community in general.

“I love it that the workplace here is like one big happy family and I am proud that this tattoo allows me to demonstrate my love for the magazine and for the vaping industry as a whole.”

I think it is very important for people, especially those of us who are lucky enough to work in this industry, to talk about vaping and help educate people how it is saving lives every day by helping smokers quit for something far safer instead. It is of paramount importance that we get this message across.

David added: “The logo is very striking and this tattoo is certainly a major talking point. Many people I meet already know what the logo is but, for those who don’t, I have the chance to talk to them about the magazine and about vaping as a whole.

“I think it is very important for people, especially those of us who are lucky enough to work in this industry, to talk about vaping and help educate people how it is saving lives every day by helping smokers quit for something far safer instead. It is of paramount importance that we get this message across.”

Daniel, who has three other tattoos, including one spelling out his nickname “Frenchy” on his other forearm, said: “I just love getting tattoos and this is a particularly cool logo so I just thought: ‘Why not’? “At least now I will never forget my nickname or where I work…all I have to do is look down at my arms.”

Vapouround Magazine PA Jorgie Shaw, 21, is the final member of the tattoo club who said she volunteered to have the artwork on her ankle because she loved the logo so much. “The logo is really cool and I am very happy with it.”

she said. Jorgie added: “It was an impulsive decision to get it done but I think it was the right decision and I really like how it has turned out.

“I love my job and there are a whole lot of people who cannot say that about the company they work for so | am happy with it.”

Editor Paul Caplin said: “My staff are all mental, but that’s what makes this magazine so special!”

Finally do you have any great, unusual or just plain crazy vaping-related tattoos that you want to share with us?

Send them to us via email to sam@vapouround.co.uk and we may print a selection in a future issue.

A-Z OF VAPING Part Six

Here is our final look at some vaping terms you may have come across and also some commonly used numbers you may see from time to time.

Vape - (verb) The action of using a vaping device to inhale and exhale vapour regardless of whether or not the e-liquid contains nicotine.

Vape - (noun) This is used as a term for the aerosol product itself and its quality such as in: “Check out my new mod, it gives a fantastic vape.”

Vapegasm – The experience you get when you put on a new atomizer or cartomizer or that first taste you get from your favourite e-liquid.

Vaper (Pictured) - a person who vapes.

Vaper Cliques - Many vapers find certain sub-groups attractive and see themselves as part of that group. They include cloudchasers, noobs, sport vapers, tootle puffers, sub-ohmers, mechheads and more.

Vaping - The act of using an e-cigerette.

Vapehole – A vaper that shows little regard for anyone around them and vapes as obnoxiously as possible.

Vaper’s Tongue – This is a common problem among many vapers when they vape too much of one flavor, and their taste buds become desensitized to the flavour.

Vape Whore – (1) Someone who is constantly vaping every breath of their day. (2) Someone who only ever signs up for a site or community to try to win stuff and who only hang out to collect free things.

Vapour – The cloud of atomised e-liquid which is produced by the act of vaping.

Vaporizer – A vaporizer turns a liquid into a gas or a vapor. This

Vis also another term used for electronic cigarette or e-cigerette.

Vapour Production – This is typically associated with juices and indicates how much vapour is produced using an average inhale of an e-cigarette.

Vent holes - Special holes made in the casing of high-end PVs or mods, to vent battery gases away from the face in case of battery explosion.

Vented Battery Cap – A simple hole or series of holes that allow for the battery to vent harmful gases in the case that your battery goes into thermal runaway.

Venting a Battery – The process where a battery is taken

FYI

Voltage – The amount of kinetic energy which, when paired with resistance, creates wattage.

Vooping – The act of vaping while defecating.

VV (Variable Voltage) – Any PV, APV, or mod that allows the user control over the voltage output of their device.

VV Mod – A variable voltage mod which usually has a removable battery and boosted supply. You can change the voltage to find your vaping sweet spot.

VW (Variable Wattage) – Any PV, APV, or mod that allows the user control over the wattage output of their device across the atomizer coil. This differentiates itself from a VV device because the voltage is calculated to arrive at the set wattage.

XXtreme Vaping Devices - OK so we cheated a little bit here and left out the initial ‘e’ in extreme. Extreme vaping devices which are the devices operating at coil resistances of under one ohm which are particularly well suited to cloud chasing as, when combined with the right e-liquids and breathing techniques, can produce super huge vapour clouds.

Watt (wattage) – The amount of heat that the atomizer coil uses to vaporize the e-liquid.

Wick – Wicks are used to deliver e-liquid to the coil in electronic cigarettes. Most atomizers use wicks that are most commonly made from silica cord but wicks can also be made from rolled up steel mesh, fibreglass, cotton, and sometimes ceramic materials.

Wicking – The process of osmosis where more concentrated fluid moves to an area of lesser concentration in an effort to find equilibrium.

Wire – Generally refers to resistance wire used in building coils for atomizers.

Woody (Wood Mod) – Any PV or APV that is handmade and fitted inside a wooden tube or box.

Wrap – One revolution of a wire during the process of building coils. Wrap refers to the process of “wrapping” a wire around a tool, usually a drill bit or screwdriver.

WTA - Whole tobacco alkaloids, a term used to refer to compounds additional to nicotine that may play a part in the effects produced by tobacco consumption. WTAs include nornicotine, anabasine, anatabine and myosmine. It is possible to get e-liquids containing WTAs but such liquids are not very common.

YWWhy Vape? - We don’t have a ‘y” for vaping terms here but every vaper will have an answer to the question “Why vape?” There are many possible answers but the most common one we hear all the time is “Because it is the only thing which has successfully allowed me to quit smoking.”

ZZero Nicotine - E-liquid can come in various nicotine strengths or it may contain no nicotine at all. E-liquid without nicotine are called zero nicotine e-liquid. While a most vapers enjoy their nicotine hit others do not always want nicotine in their juice. For example, vapers who take part in competitive events such as cloud chasing may choose a zero nicotine liquid as a matter of choice.

Numbers

18350 – A battery that is 18mm in diameter and 35mm long.

18650 – A battery that is 18mm in diameter and 65mm long.

26650 – A battery that is 26mm in diameter and 65mm long.

306 (aka LR306) – Just one of many styles of atomizers available. It is a 510 threaded atomizer with low resistance. Many 510 users use LR306 atomizers on their batteries because it gives more vapor production and better throat hit. 401, 402, and 403 – Refers to the different length of this specific electronic cigarette. They are known as m401, m402, and m403.

510 – The most popular and common style of threading for electronic cigarettes available. Originally developed by the company JoyE, it quickly became the standard within the industry.

808 or KR808 – One of many styles of electronic cigarettes available.

901– An atomizer with a female thread. it is not compatible with 510 threading.

2-piece – A two-part electronic cigarette consisting of a battery and a cartomizer.

3-piece – A three-part electronic cigarette consisting of a battery, atomizer and cartridge.

OUR STORY

OUr Stabilized WÜD RDA was born out of a larger company, WÜD Real Wood Skins.

Our company began in August 2015 with the ambition to provide every vaper the option to transform their mod into having a high end appearance. We took thin slices of real wood, added a 3M adhesive to the back, and laser cut each finished product to perfectly fit popular mods on the market. We used the same craftsmanship and skill set for that project to create our Stäbwüd RDA.

Although the first stabilized wood RDA is a great accomplishment, we knew our RDA had to go beyond looks and supersede also in functionality. That is why our RDA has a patented airflow bar, unlike any other RDA available on the market. The innovative new design was created by Paige Koontz, WÜD team member. The patented airflow bar allows the user to easily adjust their airflow without disassembling the RDA (no more getting juice all over your fingers). On top of having a patented design and being the first company to use stabilized wood on an RDA, we threw in a handful of additional features to ensure our customers receive a top of the line product:

- 22mm Diameter

- Velocity Style Deck

- Peek Post Insulator

- 2.7mm Post Holes

- Deep Juice Well (7mm)

- 2 Airflow Slots On Each Side

- 510 Drip Tip Adapter

- Additional Pin

(Bottom Feeding Squonk)

OUR PROCESS

“The process begins with pieces of wood considered rare and unique due to deformities and is restored into a stunning piece of art: the World’s First Stabilized WÜD RDA.”

Stabilized wood is not only beautiful, but the techniques used to craft the blocks are equally magnificent. There is only one company that met our standards when purchasing wood for our RDA, Brick City Blocks. The initial development begins with wood that is rare or delicate. The pieces are placed in a vacuum with colored resin. When the vacuum removes all the air, the resin penetrates the wood and transforms those fragile pieces into the strong solid blocks.

Once they reach our Virginia Beach warehouse, we initiate our multi-step process that converts these blocks into the final product. Each block is milled into shape, then sanded by hand through a series of nine steps. The wood is then finished with a strong polymer that artistically highlights the natural grain. Lastly, the wood is superimposed onto the thin metal shell of the RDA. To itemize the true detailing of the time it takes to create one RDA would require a much larger article, but we are certain the product speaks volumes of our efforts.

Great Falls Distribution

Introduces Its New Line of E-Liquids Called Proper

Great Falls Distribution (GFD) has released its newest line of premium e-liquids called ‘Proper.’ This is the company’s eleventh line featuring flavours: ‘Fresh’ ‘Pomp’ ‘Swag’ ‘Fleek’ and ‘Dapper.’

Patrick Tanyag, the founder of GFD is proud to announce their recent line citing: “Proper Liquids is kind of like the greatest hits of a lot of the projects I’ve worked on over the last few years.”

GFD already produces many other highly popular juices but ‘Proper’ is really getting people excited.

Patrick said: “What makes this line different to the others is the actual flavour profiles themselves. They’re complex and unique with a comforting familiarity to them.”

An ex-smoker of fifteen years, Patrick was first introduced to vaping in 2013 when his fiancé bought him his first e-cigarette on Valentine’s day. Prior to

this he had never considered or had any interest in vaping – but since his first puff, Patrick has never looked back which came as a massive relief for his fiancé who urged him to quit smoking numerous times.

Since then, he has gone on to become a vaping enthusiast – opening three vaping stores based all over Virginia, USA.

The company focuses on manufacturing, marketing, international distribution of e-cigarettes, vapour devices and liquids. When Vapouround asked Patrick how he started in the vape business, he explained:

“At the time there wasn’t much variety of flavour (e-liquid) to choose from in the area, so I started my own juice-making process. I went online, did my research and ordered my own DIY kit - and it really just picked up from there.

My friends enjoyed it and I realised I had quite a knack for it. From there it kind of

just snow-balled.”

But success doesn’t come from a magic wand, so initially when they started out, GFD had to continuously change and upgrade their products and factories to improve the quality of their products. More recently they have revealed plans to build their newest and biggest lab in their new facility in Fairfax, Virginia.

Locally, the company has done very well with their e-liquids, but GFD have bigger dreams and ambitions to take their brand and break into the international market.

‘Proper’ will be showcasing its e-liquid juices on the Vapouround bus at the Vapo Expo UK – The Return 2016 event at Birmingham, NEC – so be sure to look out for them and try out the new juices for yourself.

Coming up in our next issue: Q&A with GFD on their e-liquids, brand ethos and plans for the future.

KIND JUICE – The Award

Winning E-Juices Everyone’s Raving About

Without a doubt they are one of the leading and best selling natural and organic e-liquid companies in the industry. And the proof is in the pudding – they have done it again and bagged themselves another prestigious award as the winner of ‘Spinfuel's Choice Award 2016’ for the ‘Best Natural Tobacco’ e-juices.

The multiple award winning e-liquid creators formed their latest line of custom blended N.E.T e-juices called ‘Tobacco Ridge’ – the line includes flavours – ‘Sweet Carolina,’ ‘Viva La Libertad’ and ‘Liberty Bell’ – all created with organic vegetable glycerine, organic flavour extracts and naturally extracted nicotine from tobacco. Formulated with love, patience and aged to perfection – they were brewed for two months, followed by four months of aging, it’s then triple filtered and steeped for another three weeks to create the best naturally extracted tobacco vape. The flavours have been sourced from all over the world, using Turkish, American and Cuban aged leaves appealing to the most astute connoisseurs.

As described on their poster for Tobacco Ridge: “Tobacco Ridge is at the heart of the crossroads where vintage taste meets modern day techniques. Whether you enjoy a robust Burley leaf or a more gentler Canadian pale leaf skillfully paired with aromatic essences, the journey is sure to inspire!”

Hailing from Miami, Florida - JD and Imani, the founders of Kind Juice, have seen their brand grow from year to year. It all started when the married couple who live on an avocado and lychee grove where free range hens roam about, yearned selflessly to help those who wanted to opt for a wise lifestyle

and break free from a life of tobacco smoke - the rest as you would call it is history! Today, they have created a truly invigorating and unique brand for vapers to benefit. All their e-juices are micro crafted with organic vegetable glycerin and made of 100% natural and organic ingredients, without the use of any synthetic flavourings, dyes, or artificial sweeteners.

Kind Juice has been winning over fans one by one starting on a grass roots level to eventually become an industry pioneer for close to 4 years, creating one of the finest e-liquid lines that is sold in over twenty countries worldwide. They have three different collections, including their newest line ‘Tobacco Ridge.’

Their original flagship line ‘Nectars’ was introduced in 2013, which went onto win numerous awards in each category.

Their second line ‘Sub-Element E-Gel’ –is alcohol-free with super high viscosity made for dripping.

‘Spinfuel’ chose Kind Juice as their ‘E-liquid Choice Award’ winners in

2014 and have chosen them once again for this year. They were selected by ‘Vaping360’ as the ‘Best Natural Vape’ in 2016. They have also been named ‘Vape Company of the Year 2016’

Their hard work and effort into delivering exceptional flavours is evident with the result of their achievements. They manufacture in Florida in small batches using ultra-selective and allnatural ingredients, which sets them apart from any competitor in this sector. And what makes them even more special is they refuse to make any compromises; integrity and transparency is at the heart of the company – so it is not surprising that they are staunch supporters of several advocacy groups that fight for vaper’s rights - there really is no brand like it.

For delicious juice, try Kind Juice, visit: www.kindjuice.com Vapouround will be catching up with JD and Imani to get a closer insight into their all-organic lifestyle, roots and their vision for the future in the next edition – stay tuned!
