LETTER

FROM THE EDITOR

Hello and welcome to another edition of Vapouround Magazine. To say we have been busy since the last issue is something of an understatement. Since then we have produced a special edition for The Vaper Expo UK 2016 which was given out to everyone who attended the event over the three days it was held. We also hosted the first ever Vapouround Awards Ceremony, gala dinner and charity auction which took place at the NEC on the Wednesday before Vaper Expo UK opened.

This was an amazing success and we have had really positive feedback from the 300 plus people who attended. If you couldn’t make the ceremony then you can read our extensive coverage of the night’s events in this magazine.

If you attended the Vaper Expo UK then you can’t have failed to notice that we were out in force at the NEC and it was so great to get to chat to so many people there. There is also full coverage of Vaper Expo in this edition.

Special thanks to everyone for their kind comments about the magazine and we will continue to grow and represent this great industry and all the great people in it.

As I write this, we are currently putting the finishing touches to yet another special edition of the magazine - this time a USA special to coincide with World Vaper Expo 2016 which is being held at the Miami Beach Convention Center from June 10 to 12.

As an industry we are now in very challenging times indeed with vaping and vaping related products being increasingly subjected to some quite draconian levels of regulation.

The TPD is now in effect across Europe and the US Food and Drug Administration has decided to effectively classify e-cigarettes in exactly the same way as traditional cigarettes - a move which many fear could kill vaping in the USA.

It is one thing imposing quality standards to protect the public from harm but it is another thing entirely by imposing levels of regulation which could decimate the entire industry and drive vaping underground.

Let’s have responsible, proportionate and logical legislation to protect people from harm but let’s not risk destroying an entire industry by classifying vaping products as tobacco products.

We don’t want any more lives lost to smoking but if vaping is regulated out of existence then, sadly that is exactly what could happen.

VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE’S STEVE TARPEY FAILS TO SEE THE LOGIC OF THE TPD

It is difficult to imagine just how more badly wrong our politicians could have got the TPD.

This piece of legislation throws logic out of the window and seems to have the opposite effect of what it should be doing.

Throughout the UK and Europe you will hear politicians say that smoking kills and that everything should be done to encourage people to stop smoking so that lives are saved.

This is why there are so many places where once you could smoke and now it is illegal to do so.

All very well and good you may say and it is but to draft a piece of legislation which makes no distinction between a traditional cigarette and an e-cigarette is beyond crazy.

Perhaps it is because they both have ‘cigarette’ their names that it was thought they are also both tobacco products and because tobacco products are evil therefore e-cigarettes must also be evil.

complex.

Last year Public Health England produced a report which concluded that vaping was at least 95 per cent safer than smoking.

Here is what it actually said: “Best estimates show e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful to your health than normal cigarettes, and when supported by a smoking cessation service, help most smokers to quit tobacco altogether.”

VV

So would you not think that when smoking accounts for 100,000 deaths in the UK alone each year and e-cigarettes are so much less harmful than cigarettes that politicians would want to do all in their power to encourage the switch to vaping?

and other non-tobacco nicotine products improves, so the vision of a society that is free from tobacco smoking, and the harm that smoking causes, becomes more realistic.”

Add to that all the stories from around the world from people saying that it was only vaping that actually led to them giving up smoking and that is surely a powerful message that vaping should encouraged. So what does the TPD do? Well it bans virtually all advertising of e-cigarettes and e-liquids so that those people who might very well quit smoking if they knew about vaping don’t get to hear about it in the first place.

It is a piece of legislation which says: “There is a great way to save lives and get the world’s population off cigarettes so let’s do all in our power to keep it a secret.”

On a kinder view towards our politicians we might say that perhaps less was known about e-cigarettes and vaping when the Tobacco Products Directive was first drafted than is known now.

Maybe they thought Public Health England was wrong and they were waiting for some more research to back up its report.

Maybe that is true but that is no excuse for failing to amend a piece of legislation which is so blatantly wrong in many respects…not least of all in the potential to save lives.

There is so much evidence now that e-cigarettes have a huge potential to stop smokers smoking that one might argue it would be far better to make their use compulsory for smokers rather than enacting legislation which makes their manufacture and sale overly burdensome, expensive and incredibly

Well there is always the Royal College of Physicians who have also looked in depth at vaping and its potential to save lives.

Here are some of the things the Royal College of Physicians had to say: "Promoting e-cigarettes... as widely as possible, as a substitute for smoking, is likely to generate significant health gains in the UK” and “Forcing e-cigarette packaging to carry big health warnings is ‘illogical’,” and even “The emergence of e-cigarettes has generated a massive opportunity for a revolution in the way that nicotine is used in society. As the technology of these

I’ve got a better idea. Let’s not keep it a secret. Let’s be vocal about it. Let’s ensure that our politicians know how we feel and let’s encourage them to be vocal about it on our behalf.

P O U R O U A G A Z I N E

As this magazine goes to press there is a move by the House of Lords to throw out the TPD in the UK. Let’s hope this actually happens so that we can have some proper debate in this country about how vaping should be regulated in this country.

Why spend so much time and effort implementing a TPD which is flawed and nonsensical when we could be actually doing our bit to save lives instead?

We need responsible regulation for the e-cigarette industry and the sooner our politician recognise that fact the better.

SHOCK MOVE BY HOUSE OF LORDS COULD OVERTURN TPD IN THE UK

Although the controversial Tobacco Products Directive is now law throughout the European Union, there are moves being made to get it thrown out in the UK. A House of Lords committee was highly critical of the new law in a recent debate and now a senior politician is spearheading a campaign to get the legislation overturned.

The TPD has been implemented into UK law by a Statutory InstrumentThe Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016.

However Lord Callanan wants the UK law to be overturned on the grounds that the restrictions are so severe that it could force vapers back to smoking.

He has laid a motion before the House of Lords which says that the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 should be annulled.

The motion says: “Restrictions on product choice and advertising of vaping devices were devised before evidence had accumulated that vaping was enabling many people to quit smoking, run counter to advice from the Royal College of Physicians to promote vaping and are so severe that they could force vapers back to smoking and create a black market with harmful products.”

The Lords have until June 10 agree to the motion and if they do so then the statutory instrument implementing the TPD in the UK

would be annulled.

Should this happen the UK would be in breach of its EU obligations to implement the TPD and could be fined for not complying with the Directive. However given the forthcoming European Referendum the last thing the government would want right now would be the controversy that this may cause and the prospect of many vapers using their Referendum vote to reflect their views on the TPD.

Within hours of the announcement by Lord Callanan the hashtag #LordsVapeVote was trending on Twitter as vapers from throughout the UK voiced their support to the move to overturn the new law.

At the same time an online petition to Prime Minister David Cameron and Opposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn had attracted more than 27,000 supporters in just one day.

The petition entitled: “We support the Parliamentary moves to block crazy e-cigarette regulations” says: “This petition is requesting the House of Lords to back Lord Callanan’s motion to stop harsh regulations on e-cigarettes which would force vapers back to smoking.

“We urge our House of Commons to debate the implications for public health of the Tobacco Products Directive on e-cigarettes and we plead with the Prime Minister to use his influence in Brussels to get a British opt-out from Article

20 before the EU referendum so this issue does not affect that vote.”

An update on the petition’s website at the end of the first day online said: “Where does this end? It ends with a reformed Article 20. Hopefully within a month.

“A lot of politicians want to help with doing the right thing. With this petition you are enabling them to hear that there are serious problems that need fixing.

“Other politicians respond only to pressure and with this petition you are also applying that.

“Either way, given the current fevered political atmosphere, party leaders will not want to be seen to be ignoring the concerns of 2.8 million vaping votes who are becoming increasingly organised.

The new rule of politics is vapers expect respect.

“Tomorrow and over the weekend we need to get this petition growing further. If your vaping friends don’t do petitions, get them to tweet, if they don’t tweet, get them to email their MP, if they don’t do emails get them to write.”

Whatever happens it is certain that the controversy surrounding the TPD is not going to die down any time soon.

The Consumer Behaviour Journey from Smoking to Vaping.

A Culture of Cool!

What is it that makes a smoker switch to an e-cigarette and stick with it? What are the key consumer and product drivers behind a major change like this? What is it that has driven the creation of this entirely new subculture of vaping aficionados? It’s a question worth knowing the answer to, given the many decades and millions of research dollars spent trying to create effective smoking cessation products. NRTs or nicotine replacement therapies have been around for many years, but have had limited success or appeal. Consumers certainly did not take to them in the same way as they have taken to e-cigarettes. As Professor Gerry Stimson, Director of Knowledge, Action, Change, said at a lecture in London in April this year: ‘We’ve all heard of VapeFest, but who ever heard of NRTFest?’ VapeFest and other get togethers like it, entirely dedicated to e-cigarettes and the life that goes with it, are part of a ‘scene’ that runs deep and wide. Vaping represents a fiercely passionate and informed subculture with its own jargon and its own technology, a culture of cool. Vaping is trending!

The feel good factor of being part of such a community combined with the satisfaction, for many vapers, of having succeeded in quitting smoking is surely part of the success story. But

there is also a personal story. Every one-time smoker who has successfully switched to e-cigarettes has gone through their own journey from behaving like / being a smoker to behaving like / being a vaper. Understanding this journey and those behavioural changes along the way will help researchers to understand how consumers use their products, a key factor in understanding the role e-cigarettes play and will continue to play in tobacco harm reduction. An understanding of those behavioural changes will also inform the innovation process so that it continues to meet the evolving needs of vapers. This is especially important given the speed of change. There is after all no point developing a product with the potential to be substantially safer than a cigarette if nobody wants to use it.

Millions and Millions

E-cigarette sales continue to rise. Many millions of consumers now use e-cigarettes, with 2.6 million e-cigarette users in the UK alone according to ASH. According to ASH, the principle reason given for using e-cigarettes is to cut down or quit smoking. Of the 2.6 million vapers in the UK, nearly two out of five or 1.1 million are ex-smokers and three out of five or 1.4 million users are current smokers. A recent estimate from the

Office for National Statistics revealed that, in 2014, 836,000 people in Great Britain (38% of all e-cigarette users) switched completely from smoking tobacco to only vaping e-cigarettes. ASH have conducted similar surveys over the past few years and found that the vast majority of regular vapers are either ex-smokers or current-smokers. Interestingly in the most recent survey (2015), the increase in numbers of people using e-cigarettes between 2014 and 2015 came entirely from ex-smokers. Does this mean that e-cigarettes are getting better at helping people to quit?

Another study by Robert West showed that, since 2013, almost 1 in 3 quit attempts involve electronic cigarettes and that e-cigarettes are now the most commonly used product for quitting smoking, while sales of other smoking cessation products have decreased.. So what is it about e-cigarettes that is driving these trends and how has that impacted upon the behaviour of smokers who use them to quit?

Tanks and Mods

The e-cigarette market has evolved quite considerably since their emergence onto the market just a few years ago.

16 ISSUE 05 VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE
NEWS

It used to be, that the most common starter kit was a ‘cig-a-like’. These look and feel very familiar to smokers and a smoker can easily amend his or her behavior to these products. Today, many people still do start with ‘cig-a-likes’ but the time people are spending using this type of e-cigarette is falling rapidly. Increasingly, new vapers are skipping ‘cig-a-likes’ altogether and jumping straight to larger refillable devices, referred to as pens, vaporisers, boxes or mods. These devices have a wealth of versatility and adaptability unlike the ‘ciga-likes’ and typically have both superior battery life and vapour production.

This shift in product preference may also be a factor in the observation that more smokers are quitting using electronic cigarettes. The ASH survey suggests that current smokers are more likely than ex-smokers to favour the ‘cig-alike’ products. And ex-smokers are more likely than current smokers to favour the larger refillable devices with a reservoir or tank. Whereas in 2014 rechargeable and disposable ‘cig-a-like’ products were more popular, from 2015 to the current day, refillable tank devices are being much more widely used.

So how does the move from cigarettes to ‘cig-a-likes’ to tanks and mods change a

person’s behaviour, and how might that increase their chances of quitting?

If you consider behaviours unique to smoking (see Figure 1 above) like lighting and extinguishing for example and behaviours unique to vaping like digital connectivity, you can see that as you move from left to right through cigarettes, ‘cig-a-likes’, ‘tanks’ and ‘mods’, the smoking behaviours (with some fundamental exceptions e.g. the fact that you put the product in your mouth) are gradually replaced by vaping behaviours.

Smokers have a fixed smoking ritual on account of the nature of the product –you light, puff and extinguish when the cigarette has burned down. Smokers typically use the same product, with the same flavour in the same way. In contrast, vapers’ rituals are much more fluid. They can pick up their product at any time starting and finishing without waste. They have completely new and diverse flavour expectations and they want to personalise their products, they don’t necessarily want a product like anyone else. It may sound counterintuitive, but the device least like a cigarette seems to be the most popular and successful at helping quitting.

Measuring Puffing Behaviour

How do users of ‘cig-a-likes’ use their products differently to those who use ‘tanks’ and ‘mods’? One behaviour that you can put some figures on is the puffing behaviour.

In the largest study of its kind, British American Tobacco and Nicoventures have developed a test to examine vaping behaviour and used it to show that this behaviour varies with the type of e-cigarette used.

The test is based on a technology called a Smoking Analyser (SA7), which was developed initially to measure smokers’ puffing behaviour. This is a portable device capable of measuring pressure and flow and provides information such as the size and length of a puff, and the time between puffs. Using a modified version, two types of e-cigarette were tested: a disposable Vype ‘cig-a-like’ product, and a Vype ePen, which is a larger button-activated device.

Sixty current vapers participated in the study and attended the testing location on two separate days to use the products provided as they wanted.

The results show that the individual’s puffing behaviour did not significantly vary between sessions, proving it to be an accurate test. ‘Puffing behaviour did, however, differ between users of the different products,’ said Dr James Murphy, Head of Reduced Risk Substantiation at British American Tobacco. Average session lengths were similar, 6min 54 seconds for users of the ‘cig-a-like’ and 7 min 41 seconds for users of the modular device. On average, users of the modular device

took fewer puffs but of larger volumes (16 puffs, 83mL) compared to 21 puffs of 52mL.

‘The data for those using the ‘cig-alike’ was most similar to that we see for smokers,’ said Murphy. Different devices require different draw effort, have different nicotine levels etc. All these changes combined mean that vapers may adapt their behaviour over time to get the level of nicotine and / or flavour that they require. Eventually this behaviour is very different to that of a smoker.

Vapers are developing new habits, using different flavours, different products, in different ways and at different times. They can adjust their behaviour to suit their lifestyle and they have a greater variety of sensorial experiences available to them. They can vary the nicotine levels, vary type and intensity of flavouring and even vary the power input. All of this may help reinforce their behaviour in this category in a way that makes it too great a shift to move back in the other direction to old behaviours and old habits and smoking.

There is also the issue of pleasure –

vapers do enjoy their products. The same cannot be said of NRTs. The narrow approach to NRTs has meant a preoccupation with nicotine with no consideration for consumer satisfaction (meeting sensory and ritualistic needs). Surely, the key aspect of any product that could have a health benefit is that people want to use them?

“Before e-cigarettes came along, quitting smoking was a pretty miserable process,” said Dr Christopher Russell of the Centre for Substance Use Research in Glasgow, Scotland. He continued: “With the advent of e-cigarettes, smokers have something that actually makes quitting smoking fun. And who would have thought, even 10 years ago that we’d have something that succeeds tremendously where all other smoking cessation products fail, something that is very good at taking the pain out of, and putting the fun into, quitting smoking? Public health professionals have truly hit the jackpot with the invention and continual innovation of e-cigarettes to appeal to and satisfy more and more smokers at a rate previously unimagined, let alone observed.”

Consumers’ e-cigarette journey is only starting and the products are evolving rapidly to meet their needs. As products improve, and offer better experiences, more and more smokers will feel these products meet their behaviours and needs and will stick with them.

Onwards and upwards!

Tobacco Products Directive

Branded “A Historic Mistake”

In House of Lords Debate

The Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) scores an own goal by discouraging smokers from taking up vaping and preventing them from quitting smoking, the House of Lords was told.

The Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) scores an own goal by discouraging smokers from taking up vaping and preventing them from quitting smoking, the House of Lords was told.

The House of Lords Grand Committee was debating the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 which is the UK law which brings the TPD into effect.

Conservative peer Viscount Ridley told the Committee that the TPD was ‘a historic mistake’ and highlighted the huge death toll caused by smoking in the UK alone.

He said: “The horrific death toll from smoking—100,000 of our citizens die every year— is the biggest cause of preventable death on a scale that is hard to comprehend: it is a Hillsborough every eight hours. It is a scourge that deserves the very best of technical ingenuity and policy-making skills to solve.

“Britain is probably the world’s leading vaping nation. Almost all the 2.6 million vapers in Britain are smokers or exsmokers, and the quit rate for those who try vaping is faster and greater than it is with nicotine replacement therapies or cold-turkey cessation.

“In other words, this is a public health revolution, and it is costing the taxpayer nothing.

“By saving smokers a fortune, rewarding entrepreneurs and averting ill health, it is boosting the economy but we have before us a piece of legislation that strangles that breakthrough in red tape.

“It is the product of big-company lobbying and back-room deals in Brussels. It is legislation which last month the Department of Health admitted risks increasing, not reducing, the amount of

smoking.”

He said vaping has now helped more than 1 million people in the UK stop smoking but described the new vaping laws as serving to “stifle an exciting innovation that is saving lives.”

Fellow Conservative Lord Brabazon of Tara said he smoked 20 cigarettes a day for almost 50 years and it was only vaping that had successfully allowed him to quit adding: “I took up vaping two years ago and I have not had a cigarette since.”

He said: “I would estimate that 99% of people who smoke e-cigarettes are those who are trying to give up, or have given up, smoking real cigarettes. I cannot believe that anyone would start using an e-cigarette if they had not smoked an ordinary cigarette beforehand.

“It is extremely good for the pocket, as well as the health, in that 20 cigarettes now cost something like £9 a packet whereas a 10 millilitre bottle of nicotine e-liquid costs £5 and lasts me a whole week.”

Lord Callanan described the TPD as “a messy, badly worded compromise” and said the ban on advertising e-cigarettes would only serve to prevent smokers from quitting.

He said: “This is truly a terrible piece of legislation, however, it is not too late to undo some of that harm and to help encourage the taking up of e-cigarettes and, consequently, a reduction in tobacco consumption.

“Instead of trying to restrict e-cigarettes, the Government should in fact be trying positively to encourage them.”

Earl Cathcart told the Committee that he was on a 50 cigarettes-a-day habit

after he started smoking as a teenager and nothing he had tried could get him to quit.

He said: “I tried every trick in the book to kick the habit, but nothing seemed to work. I knew that it would kill me—that I would be gathered by the grim reaper before my time — but I just could not stop. I could not kick the habit.”

He said: “I heard about vaping two summers ago and I have not had one puff of tobacco since then.

“By taking up vaping, I hope to keep the grim reaper at bay for a little longer. Perhaps by the time I run out of my 2.4% nicotine supply, stronger nicotine may be available on the black market, with all the dangers that that will entail.”

Labour’s Lord Stoddart of Swindon said he found it almost impossible to believe that a government which had been so anti-smoking should enact legislation to implement the TPD and described the ban on advertising as ‘absurd’.

Speaking for the government, Lord Prior of Brampton said: “The new rules do not prevent information being provided to customers either online or in physical retail outlets, nor does it ban online forums, independently compiled reviews or blogs.

“Some advertising will also be allowed, such as point-of-sale, billboards and leaflets, subject to the rules set out in existing advertising codes to ensure that these do not appeal to people aged under 18 or non-users.

“It would be a massive unintended consequence if, as a result of this directive, fewer people gave up smoking.”

Why Your E-liquid Needs To Be Tested, Approved and Awarded A Technical Dossier

There are two main reasons why the e-liquids sold to customers as vaping products need to be tested: because your customers have the right to know that the product is not harmful and because the law says it must be tested. We dealt with the first part in the accompanying article about e-liquid testing laboratory EL Science which extensively quoted the views of its Technical Director Shaun Wedgwood.

In a nutshell, customers have the right to be reassured that the vaping products sold to them are not going to be unsafe for them to use. That alone is a very good reason why the vaping industry as a whole should welcome, encourage and actively promote the testing of e-liquids. As far as the law is concerned, if anyone wants to sell e-liquid within Europe then they must comply with the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) which came into force on May 20 this year.

The primary requirement of the TPD as it applies to e-liquid testing is that manufacturers and importers must submit a ‘technical dossier’ to the relevant authorities for each product sold.

In the UK the relevant authority is the Medical Health Regulatory Authority (MHRA) and a technical dossier for every e-liquid flavour sold must be provided to them by November at the latest.

The technical dossier must:

• Contain administrative information such as addresses, descriptions and declarations.

• Detail the full chemical composition.

• Provide a complete set of toxicological data for each chemical component.

• Have an associated Toxicological Risk Assessment (TRA) prepared using the accumulated data for each end product.

EL Science has been working closely with the MHRA and wants to be able to set the ‘gold standard’ for e-liquid testing to ensure that not only is the law complied

with but that customers can feel confident that the products they will vape have been thoroughly and rigorously tested by highly competent experts.

When EL Science carries out a full Toxicological Risk Assessment, the process can be split into five main stages.

Stage One – Toxicological Determination

EL Science works with specialist, fully registered toxicological companies to determine the toxicological profiles of over 300 individual chemical components, which form the base components of the vast majority of flavour concentrates. Each chemical is individually assessed for potential adverse effects, and components of concern will be further investigated to achieve effective threshold limits.

Stage Two – Compositional Determination

The chemical composition of an e-liquid must be determined through a combination of supplier information and analytical determination and confirmation. The EL Science laboratory contains the very latest high specification GCMS, Thermal Desorption, Atomic Absorption equipment and a whole range of smaller laboratory instrumentation which has been specifically chosen and commissioned to allow for chemical compositional analysis of e-liquid and e-liquid vapour.

Stage Three – Thermal Degradation Profiling

While no direct combustion occurs during the usage of e-cigarettes, the atomiser coil may elevate temperatures to above 300 degrees celsius. At such high temperatures, certain chemicals can degrade so it is important to investigate these potential degradation pathways. This investigation work is then confirmed by GC/MS Thermal Desorption technology.

Stage Four – Toxicological Risk Assessment

Where appropriate, utilising the data generated in the previous stages, a full TPD compliant Toxicological Risk Assessment (TRA) is compiled for the specific e-liquid flavour under examination for inclusion in the Technical Dossier.

Stage Five – Compilation and Submission

The EL Science team of organic chemists ensure that each Technical Dossier is correctly compiled and compliant with submission requirements. Only when the team is fully satisfied that the Technical Dossier contains all the required data do they submit the notification directly to the MHRA.

It can be seen that the vaping industry has come a long way since the early days when people would just mix flavours together in the hope of finding ones which tasted good.

Now we have developed as an industry to the point where we can use the very best that science and chemical analysis can provide to provide great flavours which have also been shown to be free from harmful compounds.

As EL Science’s Shaun Wedgwood put it: “We can no longer develop new flavours based solely on taste - flavour development has now become a merging of art and science.

“In our new post-TPD world, flavour development is something which will take months, not weeks, and putting a new flavour onto the market is going to take a significant investment and become a significant business decision.”

The TPD Is The Beginning Of The Regulatory Process… Not The End

You could be forgiven for thinking that Shaun Wedgwood, the technical director of e-liquid testing lab EL Science, hates all aspects of the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD).

At a recent seminar to industry leaders in London he described it as: “Ill thought-out, poorly written, misfocused and not fit for purpose.”

These are harsh words indeed for this European directive which is now law and with which everyone in the e-cigarette industry must comply.

But while the TPD is far from ideal, the analytical chemist is adamant that regulation within the industry is both necessary and desirable and he argues that many aspects of the TPD are decidedly good for the industry.

He says that the testing requirements - the most onerous part of the legislation by far - are vital for a responsible industry which puts the safety and well-being of its consumers as a priority.

Speaking at an EL Science seminar held at London’s prestigious Royal Society, he said: “Imagine if we threw the entire TPD out of the window and then sat down, as an industry, with a blank piece of paper before us.

“If we considered what sort of regulation and standards we wanted to have, then I believe that we would come up with many of the regulations that are actually contained in the TPD right now.”

Explaining why regulation was needed within the vaping industry, he explained that the key factor was minimising the

risk of potential harm to people who used electronic cigarettes.

He said: “Regulation is needed because we want to do all in our power to minimise the risk and to produce the safest product that we possibly can, especially if we consider that people could be using our products for 20 years or more.

“We need to gather toxicological and analytical data on vaping products regardless of whether or not the TPD exists. In effect the TPD has just given us a time scale and accelerated what, as an industry, we would eventually have done anyway.”

He said it was up to the industry to take a responsible view about the products it sold to the public and that it was both sensible and desirable that there should be accurate data and regular analysis on e-liquids being produced.

The EL Science Technical Director added: “We want to push the industry forward in a way that raises quality levels across the board. We are a lot further along than we were three years ago but there is still a very long way to go.

“There is a real opportunity within the TPD to set the scene and raise the bar as an industry in terms of creating industry-wide standards that are universally accepted and used. Raising the bar in terms of creating the standard is very important indeed.”

He said another great boost from the TPD was the fact that it would rise awareness about e-cigarettes and to create an opportunity to show e-cigarettes in a

good light.

Mr Wedgwood said the industry had a huge responsibility to customers to produce high quality products which are stringently tested and which had the potential to eliminate the need for traditional cigarettes altogether.

The scientist said that e-liquid manufactures should welcome the introduction of regulation, international quality control standards, regular product testing and the reduction of harm.

“The greater the consumer confidence have in e-cigarettes,” he explained “then the faster people will move away from traditional cigarettes and the more lives will be saved.

“The opportunity to be involved in the death of smoking in my lifetime is one of the things thats gets me out of bed in the mornings and drives me forward to play my part in making this industry the best it possibly can be.

“The TPD is a process and we must understand that we are at the start of this process and not the end.

“We are at the beginning of what is likely to be a very exciting journey in a rapidlydeveloping industry where we have the potential to change so many lives for the better and we at EL Science find this very exciting indeed.”

USA VAPING MAGAZINE MOCKS PEOPLE TRYING TO QUIT CIGARETTES

We've seen one of our competitors trying to deride our magazine on social media recently.

Posting a picture taken in November where one of our staff (not the staff member pictured), who still smoked had a packet of cigarettes on the desk during the production of the magazine. Normally we don’t respond to petty comments or rumblings from our competitors, we normally let our magazine speak for itself. Yet, for some reason this felt different, like they were saying that our magazine was less fit to represent this industry because we have an employee (who worked with us before the magazine started) who smokes. It actually made me angry, the thought that someone would think that a designer with many years experience, shouldn’t be part of our organisation anymore just because she hadn’t managed to quit one of the most addictive chemicals. This got me thinking, because as the owners of Vapouround Magazine, both Paul and myself who are exsmokers, now vapers, wanted to start the magazine to support the industry. The thing is we don’t just own Vapouround magazine, this is a part of a bigger organisation where we have approximately 40 staff, as we grow we always employ new staff and we don’t discriminate because people are smokers, why? Because surely these are the people who need our help the most!

When we started the magazine, we made a decision, we wouldn’t punish people because they smoked, instead we wanted to support them. Anyone who expresses an interest in wanting to quit Smoking at our businesses is provided with a free mod and tank, we also set them up with their first liquids and ensure they get guidance and support about using the devices correctly, correct nicotine strength, etc. We have even given devices to family members of our employees, so it really annoyed me that someone would try and bad mouth us, without even knowing what a difference we make. To me this is the height of ignorance, in this industry we shouldn’t be looking to ridicule smokers, considering that most of us were one once, instead we should be thinking of them as future vapers. It annoys me that people get snobbish and turn their noses up at smokers, rather than thinking what they can do to help. The moment we forget this industry exists to help people get off cigarettes is the moment we’ve lost our way, so it’s time the people doing this changed their state of mind. If all you care about is reaching experienced vapers and mocking smokers, you need an attitude adjustment. This industry is about getting to people to want quit smoking just as much as it is about

experienced vapers. Another thing is, the person whose cigarettes were in the picture is now off the cigarettes and is Vaping. We’re so proud of our employee, and your shoddy attempt to embarrass our organisation actually highlights the reason why we know we’re making a difference.

Know what you vape with Liquid Solutions

At the core is the regulation and classification of all products which will surely put the cat amongst the proverbial pigeons.

It is not as though the contents were unknown. First published in 2014 the details of the Directive have been slowly fed into the public and will finally come into law this month. The two year gap was an allowance for manufacturers to put their respective houses in order, and it is a foolish company that has not used this lead-time to finalise the legalities. This makes sense, although it seems to go against the grain of vaping and dripping communities. The grassroots led movement has favoured beards, plumes and general creativity – the worry is that intense regulation will stifle that creativity. Liquid Solutions based in Waterford, is a business bursting with creativity, with director and chief vaper Killian McGrath overseeing the company’s developments. A former smoker, Killian had tried an early commercial e-cigarette. He was initially impressed with the product but suspicious about the contents through a mixture of amateur labelling and lack of enforceable legalisation.

However, he believed in the future of vaping, and decided to make his own product. He started in his own kitchen and by sheer dint of experimentation, began to develop an early range of vape products. He knew that to succeed, he would have to move away from the cottage industry approach and found factory premises instead. He had a

vision that his quality product could dominate the market.

From the very beginning, testing formed a rigid part of Liquid Solution’s philosophy, while ‘Know what you Vape’ has become its mantra. This was quickly established across all areas of production in the factory. An experienced operations manager, George Piper was hired to take care of the day to day challenges facing a nascent industry with little or no regulation in place.

George very quickly began to enforce traditional manufacturing processes on the factory. He looked to best practice, ISO advices and Good Manufacturing Processes to guide him in place of nonexistent external vaping regulations.

As part of his commitment to quality products, George engaged an analytical chemist and began testing the product at every stage of production to ensure that the quality was intact.

At the same time, George also began to randomly test other juices available for sale and his and Killian’s suspicions were confirmed when some of the arbitrary tests returned some shocking results.

In some of the worse examples benzopyrene and formaldehyde were present in substantial amounts. In others, the levels of nicotine were inaccurately represented, in some cases well below but also in others, significantly

higher than stated.

The new TPD legislation is due to come into force on May 20, 2016, but Liquid Solutions is well ahead of the game. George was not going to leave anything to chance.

Killian discovered early on that he possessed a real nose for taste and smell. In a parallel universe he might have worked in a perfume factory or a distillery. He possessed a natural talent in being able to discern smells and tastes and even more importantly, to recreate them in another medium. From this starting point he began the task of deconstructing the tastes and smells of regular tobacco. He roasted the tobacco gently, producing the important notes for experimentation, like a master perfumer with a rose petal.

From there he sampled different tobacco extracts before mixing these pure concentrates – the flavour – with the four main ingredients that form the basis of reputable juice content; notably organic vegetable glycerine, monopropylene glycol, flavour concentrates, and nicotine. He now had a purity and a

“The Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) is around the corner. Much like a troublesome uncle, its impending arrival has been viewed with some trepidation and general worry.”

content that could satisfy a smoker without any of the carcinogenic fallout of regular tobacco.

This year Killian set up a development studio in the facility. The dedicated room is like a scientist’s lair with dozens of bottles lined up for mixing and scenting. Some have their tops off, while others are tightly sealed as Killian waits for time to do the real mixing. The air is replete with soft flavours, some sharper notes and an olfactory sensation of moving through a grown-up sweet shop. Each time Killian comes up with a new product, it is put through rigorous testing. George is at hand to regulate the creative impulse. The company recognises that when two elements combine, there is possibility that a third and unexpected result may occur. So the base products are sourced from certified suppliers and come with individual certificates for each batch. Then the four ingredients are blended and mixed and tested. The blended product is then placed in fermentation bulkheads for a minimum of several months to as much as nine, and in some cases a year. And guess what, the fermented product is tested again. Finally, the product is packaged with the different nicotine levels and bar-coded. Anyone buying Wicked E Juice products can view the batch number and results for every single bottle of juice online.

However, Liquid Solutions did not stop there. Uninformed reports of the dangers of second hand vapour were beginning to do the circuit. These reports were

based on visual similarity between tobacco smoke and vapour plumes. Vapour shares some visual elements but it is more ethereal. In fact, vapour disappears after just seven seconds, while tobacco smoke can linger for more than 20 minutes. In conjunction again with J H G Analytical Services, George has created independent tests to monitor and confirm the lack of any dangerous substances in vapour. All products are tested for their emissions and all conform to safety standards for potential bodies present in the air. Again, these test results are available online for each batch of product.

In parallel with testing, Killian is developing flavours and products, including a tasty new range called Heisen Blue. At the moment, there are 450 products under the Wicked Label, all tested to within an inch of their lives. The numbers also relate to the

different strengths of nicotine added to the product, from 18mg down to zero. In time, Killian will concentrate on just thirty or so products to keep up with the increasing sophistication of vapers. In the past month, Killian has also introduced a new dripping range; fifteen new dynamic flavours in the low to zero nicotine levels beloved of drippers. These are proving a huge success as hobbyists are looking to enjoy dripping, the throat hits and lack of nicotine.

‘Dripping is a game changer,’ says Killian. ‘With little or no nicotine, we can finally stop demonising the whole vaping industry.’

By being ahead of regulations, Killian has his eye on the international market and intends to be a global player as the market matures. His early reliance on standards and quality enforcement, positions him well in the newly regulated world of vaping.

“Dripping is a game changer,’ says Killian. ‘With little or no nicotine, we can finally stop demonising the whole vaping industry.”

VAPOUROUND AWARDS CEREMONY REVIEW

First Vapouround Magazine Awards Ceremony Hailed Huge Success

The first ever Vapouround Magazine Awards Ceremony attracted many of the top industry leaders who enjoyed a glittering gala dinner at Birmingham’s NEC.

In fact it was such a success that as news spread about the event at the Vaper Expo UK event the following weekend, people were inquiring how they could get tickets for next year’s ceremony.

The NEC proved to be an ideal choice of venue and the ceremony itself was a great pre-show event as it was just days before the Vaper Expo itself which was also held at the same venue.

Attendees were welcomed to the ceremony at a Champagne reception where they got a chance to mingle with other guests, strike up new friendships and catch up with people they already knew.

The organisers wanted to ensure that this was not going to just be a local event as it was designed to recognise the worldwide vaping industry as a whole so it was great to see so many people from around the world.

The ceremony itself took place in the Concourse Suite of the NEC where a packed program of entertainment was in place.

As well as the ceremony itself, there was a gala dinner, charity auction, music and top class magic acts. Not only was this a night to remember for all who attended but it also raised a lot of money for two very worthwhile causes and some very desirable items were won at the auction.

Hosts Chris Tucker from Villain Vapors

and Ashley Hanson from Strawberry Queen were engaging, witty and charming and proved to be the perfect duo to keep the event running smoothly. Both were instant hits with the audience and really captured the feel of the event and set the tone for the entire eveningwe could not have asked for better hosts. While there was a ‘no vaping’ rule in place inside the Concourse Suite itself due to fire regulations, there was a huge vaping area in the bar just outside and this proved to be a very popular area for people to meet and socialise during scheduled breaks in the proceedings. Magician Nick Einhorn and his team were nothing short of amazing from start to finish. Table magicians provided close up magic tricks during the night while Nick did a special magic show from the main stage.

Nick’s warm up trick was to produce a bottle of wine from a red balloon he blew up on stage and this (the wine not the balloon) was presented to one of the attendees as a surprise present.

When he made one audience member’s watch appear inside a sealed tin of popcorn which had been locked inside a wooden box, the audience went wild.

Nick was billed as the man who fooled Penn & Teller and he certainly lived up to his billing as a master magician and first class entertainer.

Vapouround Magazine Editor Paul Caplin said: “Because this was the very first event I was a little apprehensive

before the show but I was surprised how smoothly it all went.

“This proved to be a fantastic industry night and it was great to see so many people from near and far turn out and really enjoy themselves.

“It is great to bring together manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and bloggers in the one room enjoying the night.

“I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make the night the success it was and I especially want to thank everyone who supported the night and, of course, all 325 people who came along and were part of the first Vapouround Awards Ceremony.”

Paul added: “Many congratulations to all those who won awards on the night and it was great to see many of the winning trophies on display at the Vaper Expo UK event a couple of days later.

“Finally we raised more than £6,400 for our two charities - Nora’s Dream and Help for Heroes - and this was a tremendous effort from everyone who took part in the charity auction at the end of the night.”

One attendee summed up the evening when she said: “When I go to a vape expo I don’t normally attend any of the pre-show events but I made an exception for this one and I am so glad I did.

“Those who were not there really missed out on a great night. It is a mistake they will not want to make twice.”

VM Awards Ceremony Charity Auction

The Vapouround Awards evening ended with a charity auction which raised money for two really worthwhile causesNora’s Dream and Help for Heroes. The auction raised £6,400 which is a fantastic sum of money and it will be split equally between the two causes.

It was a relaxed, informal and fun event where the whole idea was to benefit two great causes and have a good time while doing so.

Once again hosts Ashley Hanson and Chris Tucker set the tone just right and did an amazing job in keeping the auction moving and the charity cash rolling in.

The vaping community is very generous and giving and when a collection of Vapouround Magazine branded goodies was snapped up for £450 at the start of the auction it was clear that the event was going to be a great success.

Framed first and second edition copies of Vapouround Magazine were next up and swelled the pot by another £250. A couple of cool mods brought in another £500 and a front cover picture in a future edition of Vapouround Magazine was amazingly popular and brought in £3,300.

One lucky attendee managed to snap up £5,000 of Vaper Expo stand space for the October 2016 show for just £2,000 and two limited edition Vapouroundbranded mods were also auctioned off before the hammer fell for the final time of the night.

Although this was a fun event for all those who took part, the main focus of the auction was on the two charities involved.

Help for Heroes was chosen because of the amazing work it does in offering comprehensive support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses in the line of duty.

It provides grants to individuals, other charities and organisations, funds capital build projects and runs four Recovery Centres across the UK.

Soldiers, sailors and airmen can get the help and support they need from Help for Heroes and the charity is committed to being there for servicemen and women who suffer life-changing injury in the line of duty.

The charity also works closely with the MOD and The Royal British Legion to deliver the Defence Recovery Capability (DRC) which helps wounded, injured and sick personnel launch back into the next phase of their lives.

Nora’s Dream is a charity which is very well known by members of the international vaping community and we are very proud to be associated with it. It raises money to fund the ongoing medical care of a beautiful young girl called Nora who was born with two forms of cystic fibrosis.

Keith Fairman from Diamond Vapor named his first e-liquid Nora’s Dream and a percentage of every one of the 20,000 bottles of Nora’s Dream he sells each month goes to support this little girl,

the daughter of a close family friend. Keith was named ‘Vaper of the Year’ at the awards ceremony for his amazing charity efforts on behalf of Nora and this proved to be a very popular choice amongst the attendees.

Keith spoke movingly about his own personal journey after being named ‘Vaper of the Year’. He said: “Eight years ago I lived under a bridge and I did not think I would be able to make anything of my life.

“Four years ago I told my wife I was going to create my own e-liquids and she thought I was out of my mind…but I held onto my dream and it paid off.

“To everyone who is struggling with their own problems in life I would say that you must never give up on your dreams because it is your dreams which will take you where you want to go.

“I want to thank everyone who played a part in naming me ‘Vaper of the Year’ and I want to especially thank everyone who has supported the Nora’s Dream fund which is so very close to my heart.”

VAPOUROUND AWARDS TESTIMONIALS

What did some of this years winners and attendees have to say about the first ever Vapouround

Awards?

“Winning the Best Dessert was an absolute pleasure and we were delightfully surprised. We worked very hard with Dillinger to be true to its description as a rich vanilla custard ice cream with caramel, and this award from Vapouround validated what vapers have been saying since we released it. We want to thank those who voted and we want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has purchased a bottle of Villain Vapors and Confection!”

“It was an amazing experience that was full of emotions, because we hold the cause to Aisle7 close to our hearts. We have been beyond blessed to be able to come to the UK and take home some of the top awards.”

“The awards were a first class affair. Vapouround did a fantastic job at elevating the vape industry with this type of event. We are especially stoked and honoured that Lucky 13 was awarded Best Tobacco as well as 2nd place in the reader poll for Juice of the Year.”

“We are honoured to be recognised for this year’s award for Best Coffee / Tea. We took the time to hand-craft each juice in our line, to ensure the best taste and quality of our timeless flavours. There is a lot of competition out there, but it’s obvious… everyone loves OFE!”

“To win the first award of the night was shocking, I was lost for words. I strive to be the best. I aim to create original, on-point e-liquids with my own original distinct style, that can be distinguished by just tasting, to know that it came from Premium Labs. Winning these awards, shows my hard work has paid off, and to be acknowledge by an unbiased, awards show is a really good feeling. This is a true accomplishment, and the Oscars of e-juice!. Being rewarded for something I love to do and have such a passion for, is the best feeling in the world!”

PREMIUM LABS WINS THREE JUICE CATEGORIES AT FIRST VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE AWARDS CEREMONY

anadian e-liquid manufacturer

Premium Labs took the honour of being the only company to pick up three accolades at the recent Vapouround Magazine Awards Ceremony.

The company has been creating unique flavours since 2012 and prides itself on producing premium blends to the very highest of standards.

Using only quality ingredients, sourced from across the world, all the Premium Labs flavors and blends are made from original recipes to produce a one-of-akind Eliquid.

This attention to detail has won Premium Labs a huge following and they are adding to their customer base every month.

The Vapouround Awards judges were certainly very impressed with the juices they sampled and it is clear that the company has put a huge amount of effort into getting their flavours spot on. Not only are the flavours excellent but the bottles also look great with eyecatching designs that really stand out from the crowd.

The winning juices were as follows:

• Best Fruit for Dr Fog’s Alpha

• Best Drinks/Cocktail for Distinct Strawberry Martini and

• Best Sweets/Candy/Chocolate for Heavy Metal.

Dr Fog’s Alpha comes from the company’s hugely popular Famous Ice Cream range and it is a watermelon tropical sherbert e-liquid which has an explosive water melon flavour on the inhale, tasty sherbet on the exhale and is not overly sweet.

Strawberry Martini comes from the company’s Distinct range of juices and is a classic strawberry martini with a twist of lime while Heavy Metal comes from the Convicted Vapes range and is a honeydew brew flavour.

Premium Labs CEO Samuel Boucher said he was amazed to pick up three awards at the very first Vapouround Awards Ceremony.

“Everyone at Premium Labs works very hard to produce the best possible juices we can,” said Boucher, “so it is fantastic when their hard work is acknowledged like this by the vaping industry.

“There were eight separate awards for juices on the night, we were nominated for five and we won three so that is a pretty successful night for Premium Labs.

“First of all it was great to be nominated. I knew we were shortlisted for a number of awards but it was only on the night itself that I even found out that we had the made the top three for any of our juices.

“When we won the first award I was delighted, when we won the second I was shocked and surprised and when we won the third I was absolutely speechless. I was confident that we had the best juices because I know how much work goes into getting them just right but I was not confident that we were going to win anything.

“When you get other people from the industry examining your products and saying that they are the best then that is a great feeling and it means that all our hard work has really paid off.”

He said he was very impressed how the Awards Ceremony was run and has already updated his website to show that he has three award winning juices

among his range.

More importantly the triple success will help establish Premium Labs as an up and coming company throughout Europe.

Premium Labs has only been in the European market for around three months and doing so well at the Vapouround Awards was described as a ‘dream start’ by Boucher.

They are the only fully certified e-liquid lab in Canada, have nine premium juice lines and have another four on the way.

In addition they are in the final stages of setting up a state-of-the-art lab in London which should be up and running this Summer.

Premium Labs was founded in Canada in April 2014 and produces several ranges of high quality e-liquids for the home and international markets.

Vapouround Magazine took time to chat to CEO Samuel Boucher during the Vaper Expo UK in Birmingham and this is what he told us.

Q. First of all congratulations for doing so well at the awards ceremony. What reaction have you had since winning those three awards?

A. Well I signed my first autographs! At first I thought someone was playing a joke because nobody has asked for my autograph before. I really do appreciate the love people have for my company and my products. The stories I have heard from people quitting smoking because of vaping are also are just amazing.

Q. You had a big presence at the Vaper Expo UK event. How did that go for you and do you have any highlights from your weekend there?

52 ISSUE 05 VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE
AWARDS C

A. The UK customers are awesome. I notice that in Europe they look at a juice for taste and quality before anything and appreciate a premium product.

Q. Your lab facilities in Canada look very impressive indeed. Can you tell us a little about the set up you have there? (Type of facility, equipment etc.)

A. We have a 1,400 square foot Iso 7 engineered lab and vestibule and a vacuum fill system from Accutek USA. We are currently expanding our facility with two more Accuteck machines each upgraded with a 12 valve vacuum filler and an additional labs space of 3,000 square feet in our new 15,000 square foot facility which will be operation some time this summer 2016.

Q. How will the new lab in London compare with your existing facility and what will it mean to the company in terms of expansion and meeting the demand for your products?

A. The new lab in London will be identical to our original lab built for us for Canada. To start with our products will be shipped from our co-packer in the US until we are operational. We are just to busy to have any down time.

Q. What was the reason for expanding

to Europe so soon. How would you compare the European market to that in Canada and the USA?

A. The reason is my European sales were enough to make this decision. Also I want to make sure my product is manufactured to my procedures and I love London and look forward to making it my second home.

Q. The Tobacco Products Directive has just come info force across Europe and this severely limits what vaping products can be sold. How will this effect your plans in Europe, if at all?

A. I am ready for the change.

Q. In the US the FDA has just announced what looks like really severe new regulation. Do you have any thoughts on what is happening over there?

A. I am working with my US partners and lawyer to see how this plays out.

Q. Can you tell us more about the company’s plans for the future and when can we expect to see the new flavour ranges that you will be bringing out? Any clues as to what they may be?

A. I have 6 new lines to come in the next 12 months and I always make sure my juices lines are always better than the last.

VAPING ADVOCACY GROUPS TAKE FIRM STANCE ON

Irresponsible Labeling of e-liquids Part I

abeling e-liquids can certainly be challenging. Things to consider when labeling your e-liquid include health warnings, age requirement, ingredients, flavor profile and the amount of nicotine inside.

However, the most important aspect of designing a label, especially considering the current controversy surrounding Vaping, is to make sure that it cannot be considered appealing to children. The reason why the image of the vape industry needs to be reputable is because criticisms might harm the changes that Vaping is making to society. Vaping has been strategically thrown under the Public Health sector’s microscope with the FDA shining a spotlight on it, salivating at the chance to pass harsh regulations on the entire industry, greatly affecting this consumerdriven resolution towards are reduction of tobacco abuse. Yet, Vaping has very recently been given some of the respect it deserves.

A recent report released by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), Nicotine without smoke: tobacco harm reduction addresses the concerns that e-cigarettes will increase tobacco smoking by renormalizing the act of smoking. Other concerns are that Vaping may act as a gateway to smoking for young people, and be used by smokers as only a temporary rather than permanent cure. RCO concludes, “To date, there is no evidence that any of these processes are

Acceptable, Elegant Labeling

occurring to any significant degree in the UK.”

There has also been a study funded by our own Food and Drug Administration from seven international tobacco control experts, which concludes the FDA should tread lightly when it issues its first-ever set of rules on this unregulated $3.3

billion industry in the next few weeks. But there is always a catch somehow. For instance, While e-cigarettes might improve lives, they also may entice children to take up the nicotine habit –especially when the industry is targeting them with advertising and kid-friendly flavor varieties.

As it spells out the wonky aspects of testing requirements and health and safety standards, the FDA must lay down the law on the industry’s odious and persistent efforts to draw in the youth market – indeed, we hope that is the headline when these regulations are announced. These are statements directly from an Editorial article by StarLedger titled, FDA’s prime directive: Keep e-cigarettes from kids. When asking the U.S. based Company, World’s Finest Vapors, about this controversy they said:
“A good product will sell itself with no games or gimmicks. If more money is spent on the packaging rather than the product itself, a customer may simply be left disappointed.”

World’s Finest Vapors continues by stating, “As Wild as the Old West things may seem, there are in fact rules that govern product labeling. Every State mandates different requirements and there is a tremendous amount of information available at the FDA. Legal Entities have been in place to help prevent fraud, deception and other unfair business practices, such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).”

Considering this World’s Finest Vapors proceeds, saying “The FTC can even fine violators heavily, however, it is currently mostly an honor system. Due to manpower and other issues that prevent them from seeking out violators, the best they can really do is encourage manufacturers to do the right thing. It’s our job as leaders to function in the capacity of Ambassadors to this industry as a whole. Until consumers are fully educated about the type of products on the market, and are able to make accurate decisions regarding the choices available - honor, integrity and most importantly consumer safety should be at the forefront of our

thoughts” (Worlds Finest Vapors, Est. 2009).

It is undeniable that Vaping advocates all agree that responsibility and accountability are prerequisites when developing, labeling that is consistent with a more professional standard that does not appeal to children or teenagers. Vape advocates preach that we must force companies who attract children with their labeling and packaging to stop what they’re doing immediately and rethink their approach to marketing their products. Vaping Advocate in the VapersArmy advocacy group, Dave Freeman, says, “Cartoon marketing is a sad attempt at nostalgia, while it may not be appealing to all kids even one is too many and as vapers we need to speak with our money and not support companies who take part in this activity.”

Another issue with the irresponsible labeling of e-liquids is that the flaws of the industry are often pounced upon by its critics.

For instance, in an article by the StarLedger Editorial Board, Stop Corrupting Kids with Flavored Vapes claims “ The use of e-cigarettes among middle and high school students tripled from 2013 to 2014 alone.” This article is obviously anti-anything Vape-related.

Stop Corrupting Kids with Flavored Vapes says, “How has it proliferated? Consider that advertising for e-cigarettes reaches 70 percent of these students. That’s 18 million young people who see these ads - in stores, magazines, online, on TV –and who believe that vaping is a healthy alternative to tobacco.”

After they write that last snarky remark about believing that Vaping is a healthier alternative to tobacco, what comes next is one of the most oddly expressed, poorly thought-out, borderline delusional, slightly offensive and completely illogical analogies I’ve ever come across. What becomes one of the most illogical analogies ever used is states that people believing electronic-cigarettes are healthier than traditional cigarettes “is like saying it’s safer to inhale the exhaust fumes of a hybrid vehicle than that of a diesel truck.” Well then, clearly this article has some rather strangely-worded and extremely illegitimate analogies. I guess I understand where they are coming from in regards to technology and change, but seriously, is there a need for such an exaggerated analogy?

It’s not exactly in the field of accuracy. To heighten his dismissive depiction of the Vaping industry, the writer states, “If that sounds cynical, consider that half the global vaping market, a $7 billion industry, is owned by Big Tobacco. Those guys aren’t known for transparency.”

Intellectually Theorizing Smoking Tobacco vs. Vaping Nicotine

Part I

Unfortunately, in the year 2016 people still do not know that there is a difference between tobacco and nicotine. Many believe that these two separate things are one in the same. However, tobacco is far and away much more dangerous than nicotine.

An article titled, “California’s antivaping bill goes up in smoke: Demise of legislation highlights rise of e-cigarette lobbying,” written by Daniel Cressey. He writes, “Researchers are broadly split into those who think that the products undermine attempts to free society from nicotine addiction entirely, and thus should be subject to the same restrictions and taxes as tobacco, and those who think that e-cigarettes deserve lighter regulation than normal cigarettes because they could help smokers to quit.”

In an article for The Guardian titled, “Does a tobacco-free world need to be nicotine free?” Written by Suzi Gage, states, “It’s not the nicotine in cigarettes that causes all the health risks associated with smoking – from a number of cancers to cardiovascular disease to respiratory disease. The process of burning tobacco releases many thousands of chemicals, around 70 of which are known to cause cancer.

Nicotine is toxic at very high doses if consumed orally, but deaths from nicotine are very rare.” Suzi Gage is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, investigating associations

between substance use and mental health.

Gage writes, “This has led to a profound disagreement between some researchers in the field. To put it simply, some use the precautionary principle as an argument not to support the use of e-cigarettes until we can be sure they’re not harmful. Others believe that harm reduction is the key goal, and since we know e-cigarettes don’t pose the harms associated with tobacco use (because they don’t contain tobacco itself), they’re likely to be vastly less harmful than cigarettes even if there might be some negative impacts of use.”

The TVECA states on their website

that “The e-cig is simply a battery and five main ingredients (propylene glycol, glycerol, nicotine, water and flavoring) that work in harmony to provide adults with their desired nicotine in a hand to mouth ritual that cannot be mimicked by traditional nicotine replacement therapies (NRT's) such as gums, patches and lozenges that have up to a 92% failure rate.”

Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association is an international nonprofit trade association. So, the TVECA clarifies that, “Our organization is dedicated to creating a sensible and responsible electronic cigarette market by providing the media, legislative

bodies and consumers with education, communication and research” (www.tveca.com).

Over time, countless piles of heightened truthful information related to the half a million American deaths annually or 6 million globally? Those things that have allowed many struggling educators and researchers to easily build a genuine respect for their writing? Those things that gave research studies that capability of becoming published in well-revered academic journals? Those things that became objects of research for the projects containing valid data on the inevitability of how effective they were at generating countless cases of addiction? Those things when inhaled that are most definitely proven to be the catalyst for certain fatal illnesses that became classified as tobacco-related?

Unyielding evidence has been reached and agreed upon by everyone within a research-based professional career that smoking those things known as tobacco cigarettes, were the primary cause for a plethora of devastating health issues. The statistics do not lie this time. Organized investigation specialists conducted research with a multitude of categorical methods and strategies of inquiry, from interactive field-work to recorded lab tests, whether natural science based studies or social science research, their data, for the most part, was all collected, analyzed, interpreted, reviewed, recorded and ultimately reported to the masses.

Reliable and credible sources to retrieve factual information about adverse effects of smoking was and is still vast, so abundant and real that it was causing these valid references, like

respected academic journals, were becoming saturated with such research on the harmful and damaging traditional tobacco cigarettes. It was becoming almost etched in stone and drilled in our brains.

Smoking cigarettes will take away, at the very least, an approximate 10 whole years from living your life, yet perhaps there are some people out there, indeed they do exist, who might claim, “I still enjoy smoking, I feel more patient and it relaxes my mind so I’m still going to smoke no matter how slowly it kills my body.”

Unfortunately, I’ve most definitely been guilty of possessing such an attitude and recall that I certainly used to recite comments similar in scope. Of course, I’m guilty of this in past years from so much personally addictive tobacco abuse. Nowadays though, I'm lucky enough to have the right to choose. Dear tobacco, you lose pure and flab vapor is all my lungs need to use.

Weird & Wonderful TOP 10

Here is the latest selection of wonderfully weird juice flavours which caught our eye recently. E-liquid manufacturers can certainly be very creative when it comes both to naming their juices and also to the artwork and the design that goes into the product packaging.

Orphan Blood by Fuzion Vapor

Well this name certainly has shock value as does the bottle artwork which features a single droplet of bright red blood with the picture of a sad-faced boy on it. As for flavour, this is a raspberry orange sherbet e-liquid.

Blonut Milk by Sub Ohm Juice

This is described as a double-dipped sugar-coated donut flavour e-liquid drenched in a strawberry milkshake finish. I think we can safely say this is going to be a rather sweet juice flavour. Great artwork on the bottle for this one which makes it really stand out.

Blue Waffle by Sub Ohm Juice

This is a name which certainly catches the eye. I mean what? If you are none the wiser about the flavour well then maybe this description will help… “Blue Waffle - A gang bang of raging blueberries, filling every hole of a sweet and innocent waffle, leaving a real mess behind!” No? OK well try this one then. “Blue Waffle is a freshly toasted waffle crammed with blueberries and absolutely bursting with flavour.” OK I think I’ve got it now.

Snake Oil by Tmax Juices

Actually if we want to get all formal about this one we should give it it’s full title - Dr Stanley Clark’s Original Recipe Snake Oil. Original recipe no less! None of those second or third generation snake oil recipes here. Snake Oil is citrus fruits, balanced with a background note of anise, with a hint of a sugar coating.

FEATURE 70 ISSUE 05 VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE

FEATURE

Dr Jekyll by Digbys Juices

We are told this is a real monster of a juice and that it is most certainly not suitable for those who prefer their flavours to be subtle. Described as a “heavy bodied anise monster” this has citrus high notes and a slightly bitter but creamy mint base.

Shark’s Blood by BordO2

Sharks normally go after the blood of other creatures - sniffing out the most minute quantities and then circling round their victim before going for the kill. Thankfully you don’t need to get near any real sharks to discover what shark’s blood tastes like for yourself. This shark’s blood e-liquid tastes of strawberry, lemon and aniseed.

Mafia Princess E-Liquid by Smax

It seems to be a rude question to ask but what does a Mafia princess actually taste like? Well she might taste like this e-liquid if you covered her in Italian cake, poured some espresso on top and then finished it off with whipped cream. You would have a rather messy princess but she would taste really great.

Tortoise Blood by Shijin Vapor

Well tortoise blood is green which is something you might now have known before. The flavour is described as “an everlasting, impenetrable flavor of blue raspberry and green apple blended with sweet sherbet.” This was also one of the finalists at the recent Vapouround Awards ceremony.

Wonder Worm by Charlies Chalk Dust

Another Vapouround Awards finalist here. This is a sweet candy which tastes of crystalized gummy worms laced with psychedelic sweet tarts. wonderful sugary sweet liquid which promises to take your taste buds on a journey of flavour.

The Abyss by Costal Clouds

You never know what you may find when you venture into the abyss. Well actually in this case you do. A mouthwatering watermelon flavoured salt water taffy vape is what you will get from this particular abyss. It is extremely popular too by all accounts.

IT'S NOT A JOB, its a lifestyle

It’s 6am and I’m up checking my gear to make sure everything is charged and in order. Like many times before, I’m in another hotel room, and in another state. This particular event starts at 9am and ends at 8pm, so for the next 14 hours I have to be at 100%; and this doesn’t even include the after-hours shenanigans I usually find myself in when I’m attending events. Bottom line, it’s going to be a long day. This has been my life for the past 6 months; traveling non-stop, promoting the industry, my company, and emceeing cloud comps. How did I end up in this position, you ask? Well, let me tell you about my journey.

I came into the vaping industry with a background in music and performing arts. I started rapping at an early age and hip hop quickly turned into my passion. I was able to sell out shows, collaborate with great artists, and work on projects that set records in my local area. During that time, my only vice was

cigarettes and it started to affect my life in a very negative way, especially when it came to performing. I had shortness of breath, frequently lost my voice, and had a constantly sore throat that put a damper on my whole performance; then I found vaping. I was able to better my health and my ability to excel at my craft,

“I CAME INTO THE VAPING INDUSTRY WITH A BACKGROUND IN MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS. I STARTED RAPPING AT AN EARLY AGE AND HIP HOP QUICKLY TURNED INTO MY PASSION.”

and as time went on, I started to develop an equal love for vaping. Putting down cigarettes was hard, really hard. At first I thought cutting cigarettes out of my life would be easy; wrong, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to quit. Once I found vaping, I found a healthier way to live.

Initially I started to get more into the whole scene as a healthier alternative to tobacco, but it slowly turned into a lifestyle. I found myself at a different vape shop every other day, just hanging out and meeting new people. From there, I began developing friendships with people I never would have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. That’s when I discovered that vaping is not only a lifestyle, but a community, and more importantly, a family.

I remember all that it took to even get to my first expo. I had a small amount of money at the time and I had saved up for a down payment on a business van. I talked to my dad and asked him for advice; he basically told me, ‘with no risk, there’s no reward’. After seriously contemplating whether to buy the van or go to Las Vegas for the expo, I finally decided to go to Vegas. I had my mind made up, and with that, I bought a plane ticket for myself and my better half, Cory, and we were off. While we were

FEATURE

waiting at baggage claim, I noticed a gentleman who was vaping. We struck up a conversation and he invited me to join him the next day at the booth of one of the vendors at the expo, Continuous Current, to check out some of their products. The first day of an expo is usually just Business to Business, so the general public wasn’t allowed in. That didn’t deter me though, I told myself I was still going to go. After I talked to a few people at the door, they switched my badge from public to vendor, told me to have fun, and that's exactly what I did. After meeting Kyle Kruger, the owner of Continuous Current, I felt very much at home and I started to feel like the risk I took was paying off.

Before attending the expo, I had formed a vaping company, DUVO, with my friend Shane Palladino and my girlfriend Cory Hetherton. When I got home from the Las Vegas event, I got a call from Continuous Current and we discussed working together on some projects. Once we began collaborating with Continuous Current, it opened the door for us to work

with many other companies. DUVO is an acronym that stands for DRIPPED UP x VAPED OUT; we drew our inspiration from the vaping lifestyle and to us, DUVO is just as much a lifestyle as it is a brand. We have collaborated with the some of the best companies in the industry, like Continuous Current and Vapor City Sauce. Producing our DUVO LIMITED CLOTHING CO. line, Limited Edition Continuous Current Manhattan V2 buttons, DUVO PREMIUM ELIQUID, and our Cloud Comp and Event Hosting Company, CLASH OF THE CLOUDS, we have seen levels of success we never could have anticipated. DUVO has given all of us an outlet that has the ability to reach so many people. After traveling, emceeing events, and seeing the heart of the industry first hand, I can say it’s something worth fighting for. The reward of sharing a sense of unity with people from all walks of life is encouraging and puts perspective on things. On top of it, we get to meet our supporters and work with companies that represent great integrity

Although it is not possible to precisely quantify the long-term health risks associated with e-cigarettes, the available data suggest that they are unlikely to exceed 5% of those associated with smoked tobacco products, and may well be substantially lower than this figure.

SMOKERS SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO USE E-CIGARETTES SAYS ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS

E-cigarettes can help smokers quit all tobacco use forever and public can be reassured that they are much safer than smoking.

E-cigarettes are likely to be beneficial to UK public health and smokers should be encouraged to use them according to a new report by the Royal College of Physicians.

The report, entitled ‘Nicotine without smoke: tobacco harm reduction’ also concludes that the public can be reassured that e-cigarettes are much safer than smoking.

The influential medical body points out that tobacco smoking is both addictive and lethal with half of all lifelong smokers dying early, losing an average of about 3 months of life expectancy for every year smoked after the age of 35.

Around 8.7 million people still smoke in the UK and the Royal College of Physicians says that it is important to help protect this group of smokers from disability and early death.

The body said: “Since e-cigarettes became available in the UK in 2007, their use has been surrounded by medical and public controversy.

“This new 200-page report examines the science, public policy, regulation and ethics surrounding e-cigarettes and other non-tobacco sources of nicotine, and addresses these controversies and misunderstandings with conclusions based on the latest available evidence.” Key findings from the report include:

• E-cigarettes are not a gateway to smoking – in the UK, use of e-cigarettes is limited almost entirely to those who are already using, or have used, tobacco.

• E-cigarettes do not result in normalisation of smoking – there

is no evidence that either nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or e-cigarette use has resulted in renormalisation of smoking. None of these products has to date attracted significant use among adult neversmokers, or demonstrated evidence of significant gateway progression into smoking among young people.

• E-cigarettes and quitting smoking - among smokers, e-cigarette use is likely to lead to quit attempts that would not otherwise have happened, and in a proportion of these to successful cessation. In this way, e-cigarettes can act as a gateway from smoking.

• E-cigarettes and long-term harmthe possibility of some harm from long-term e-cigarette use cannot be dismissed due to inhalation of the ingredients other than nicotine, but is likely to be very small, and substantially smaller than that arising from tobacco smoking. With appropriate product standards to minimise exposure to the other ingredients, it should be possible to reduce risks of physical health still further. Although it is not possible to estimate the long-term health risks associated with e-cigarettes precisely, the available data suggest that they are unlikely to exceed 5% of those associated with smoked tobacco products, and may well be substantially lower than this figure.

The report acknowledges the need for proportionate regulation, but suggests that regulation should not be allowed significantly to inhibit the development and use of harm-reduction products by smokers.

It says that a regulatory strategy should

take a balanced approach in seeking to ensure product safety, enable and encourage smokers to use the product instead of tobacco, and detect and prevent effects that counter the overall goals of tobacco control policy.

Professor John Britton, chair of the RCP’s Tobacco Advisory Group, said: “The growing use of electronic cigarettes as a substitute for tobacco smoking has been a topic of great controversy, with much speculation over their potential risks and benefits. This report lays to rest almost all of the concerns over these products, and concludes that, with sensible regulation, electronic cigarettes have the potential to make a major contribution towards preventing the premature death, disease and social inequalities in health that smoking currently causes in the UK.

“Smokers should be reassured that these products can help them quit all tobacco use forever.”

RCP president Professor Jane Dacre said: “Since the RCP’s first report on tobacco, Smoking and health, in 1962, we have argued consistently for more and better policies and services to prevent people from taking up smoking, and help existing smokers to quit. This new report builds on that work and concludes that, for all the potential risks involved, harm reduction has huge potential to prevent death and disability from tobacco use, and to hasten our progress to a tobacco-free society.

“With careful management and proportionate regulation, harm reduction provides an opportunity to improve the lives of millions of people. It is an opportunity that, with care, we should take.”

FEATURE

These are the main findings of the report ‘Nicotine without smoke: tobacco harm reduction’ - a major new study into smoking and electronic cigarettes which has been published by the Royal College of Physicians.

The report looks at the harm caused by smoking - describing it as “the biggest avoidable cause of death and disability, and social inequality in health, in the UK” and goes on to show how e-cigarettes can help reduce that harm.

It says that most of the harm to society and to individuals caused by smoking in the near-term future will occur in people who are smoking today and adds that “quitting smoking is very difficult and most adults who smoke today will continue to smoke for many years.”

The report says that people smoke because they are addicted to nicotine, but points out that they are harmed by other constituents of tobacco smoke and concludes: “Provision of the nicotine that smokers are addicted to without the harmful components of tobacco smoke can prevent most of the harm from smoking.”

The main findings include:

• E-cigarettes are marketed as consumer products and are proving much more popular than nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) as a substitute and competitor for tobacco cigarettes.

• E-cigarettes appear to be effective when used by smokers as an aid to quitting smoking.

• E-cigarettes are not currently made to medicines standards and are probably more hazardous than NRT however, the hazard to health arising from long-term vapour inhalation from the e-cigarettes available today is unlikely to exceed 5% of the harm from smoking tobacco.

• Technological developments and improved production standards could reduce the long-term hazard of e-cigarettes.

• There is no evidence that e-cigarettes will increase tobacco smoking by renormalising the act of smoking or by acting as a gateway to smoking in young people.

• The available evidence to date indicates that e-cigarettes are being used almost exclusively as safer

alternatives to smoked tobacco, by confirmed smokers who are trying to reduce harm to themselves or others from smoking, or to quit smoking completely.

• Regulation to reduce direct and indirect adverse effects of e-cigarette use should not be allowed significantly to inhibit the development and use of harm-reduction products by smokers.

• A regulatory strategy should take a balanced approach in seeking to ensure product safety, enable and encourage smokers to use the product instead of tobacco, and detect and prevent effects that counter the overall goals of tobacco control policy.

• The tobacco industry has become involved in the e-cigarette market and can be expected to try to exploit these products to market tobacco cigarettes, and to undermine wider tobacco control work.

• In the interests of public health it is important to promote the use of e-cigarettes, NRT and other nontobacco nicotine products as widely as possible as a substitute for smoking in the UK.

New Royal College of Physicians report underlines why e-cigarettes are a healthier alternative to cigarettes

It is common knowledge that smoking is the largest avoidable cause of death and disability within the UK. Whilst some may huff and puff at the newly plain packaging of cigarettes, the vigorous pursuit of conventional tobacco control policies is encouraging smokers to ditch the analogue cigarettes. Yet whilst we are a society slowly grappling towards the ultimate redundancy of tobacco harm, a recent report from the Royal College of Physicians, underlines the important role e-cigarettes play in the long battle for tobacco harm reduction. If you don’t know who the RCP are, they’re the professional membership body for physicians that aims to reduce illness and works closely with the NHS. What the RCP thinks and says counts. We all know that it’s mainly the nicotine, and not the other thousands of harmless chemicals in tobacco that’s addictive to us, right? Hence, all the remedies you’ll find for kicking the habit are always nicotine-based. However, the RCP’s report highlights the fact that aids such as chewing gums and inhalers are often less successful without health professional input and support. Alternatively, e-cigarettes appear to be

effective when used by smokers as an aid to quit smoking. So if you hadn’t already caught on, that’s why there’s been such a phenomenal rise in the amount of pop-up e-cig stores and pedestrian vapers across Britain. Furthermore, while a frequent rhetoric used by those against or sceptical of vaping is the possible and unknowable long-term effects of inhaling the other chemicals used in e-cigarettes, the RCP point out that the hazard is unlikely to exceed 5% of the harm from smoking tobacco. Just 5%!!! In addition, the board proposes that technological developments and improved production standards could reduce these minimal hazards. Thus, it is important that the demonization of vaping ends so that we can develop the industry to be even more of a benefit to the customers we care about.

Another criticism which is often used to quash the efforts of vaping advocates, is the concern that e-cigarettes will increase tobacco smoking by renormalizing the act of smoking, acting as a gateway to smoking in young people, and being used for temporary, not permanent abstinence from smoking. Yet, the report underlines

that, in fact, there is no evidence to suggest any of these processes is occurring to a significant degree in the UK. Instead, E-cigarettes are being used primarily by those who want to reduce harm to themselves or to quit smoking completely, and it’s having brilliantly positive effects! The RCP suggest that whilst regulations should reduce the direct and indirect adverse effects of e-cigarette use, they should not be allowed to significantly inhibit the development and use of harm-reduction products by smokers. The RCP’s real target for the suggested regulations is of course the tobacco industry, who they admit have begun to exploit the popularity of e-cigarettes for their own marketization. Nevertheless, the report concludes that in the interests of public health, it is important to promote e-cigarettes as widely as possible as a substitute for smoking in the UK. The recognition of the benefits of e-cigarettes by a medical institution such as the RCP ought to be taken as a huge blow for those who fail to see the significance of the growing vaping industry. For us, it’s a massive feat!

Sociological Vaping: A Declaration of Tactful Insight 1st Edition

“Who are the Vapers?” may very well be a research question in which I'm attempting to answer with pure honesty and raw data via ethnographic social research. Yet, I already have much to declare. A Vaping Lifestyle is not just a life only defined by an act of Vaping by using vape devices to deliver nicotine and exhale the biggest clouds of vapor. Vapers are more than just those who vape. Vapers are full of a plentiful plethora of intangible qualities. We are the Vapers. We are united. We are passionate. We are sociable. We are citizens. We are dream makers. We are cloud chasers. We are advocates. We are juice tasters. We are constituents. We are connected. We are different. We are the same. We are ordinary. We are extraordinary. We are educated. We are creative. We are Modders. We are honest. We are intelligent. We are dedicated. We are relentless. We are brave. We are vulnerable. We are the truth. We are coil-builders. We are strong. We are infinite. We are the

answer. We are everlasting. We are compassionate. We are respectful. We are altruistic. We are change. We are a movement. We are THE VAPERS! From this, I can only conclude that vapers are unified and share many of the same exact beliefs: “Vaping helped me

quit smoking cancerous cigarettes and abusing tobacco. Thus, Vaping works, so, I believe in it and plan to stand up for it.” I would certainly agree with those beliefs, if I didn’t, I’d still be smoking. I played basketball my entire life and in the off season, I would chain-smoke, but

84 ISSUE 05 VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE FEATURE
“Vaping helped me quit smoking cancerous cigarettes and abusing tobacco. Thus, Vaping works, so, I believe in it and plan to stand up for it.”

during the regular season, I would dip tobacco to give my lungs a rest. The very first day I began Vaping, all the smoking and dipping was history or the end of a former lifestyle of abusing tobacco. So, yeah, Vaping most definitely works and has vastly reduced harm in my life.

Given how much Vaping has evolved at such an unyielding rate, I’m continually impressed with the technological ments I see today, I can not even begin to imagine what the market would be like if Vaping was around for over 20+ years now. Regardless, it’s evolving nature is relentless and meaningful. Not only does the market continually evolve in technological features, but as a Vaper, you also evolve.

Considering this, Vaping, as it evolves has been able to accomplish enormous feats and reach unimaginable heights among wider society. Not only has it been proven to be one of the greatest breakthroughs moving towards the answer of a harm reduction approach for smoking cigarettes, but it has also brought together so many people who may have never met otherwise. Vaping is extremely sociological because vapers are indeed very sociable, eager to learn new things and interested in meeting new people. The Vaping Community has amazed me in so many ways. I have met countless individuals with a number of the same thoughts and beliefs I tend to have.

In article, Smokeless Cigarettes –Slapping Excuses Around and Giving Real Cigarettes a Black Eye, he asks, “So what is the big deal about E-cigarettes and why is vaping catching on in a big way?” First off, this is a very logical and significant question to be asking. It is very similar to one of the very first questions I ask any Vaping industry business owner that I interview for my own articles.

Wilters continues, “There are several

reasons for this. First, since it is not using smoke to dispense the nicotine, it is automatically safer compared to regular or conventional cigarettes. Second, as mentioned before, it is vapor that the smoker inhales as well as exhales. This means the vapor will immediately dissolve into the air. This in turn means that there are no second hand smoke issues to deal with. An E-cigarette is allowed in many public places where conventional cigarettes are not allowed” (The Sequitur Website).

It is extremely important to remember to be persistent when asking questions if you want to learn, especially if you want to learn about something you've been misinformed about, which is often the case with Vaping.

A new report released by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), Nicotine without smoke: tobacco harm reduction, should provide hope and inspiration to smokers, that vaping is a practical option for quitting cigarettes. The American Vaping Association (AVA) states that, “the 200 page report concludes that in the interest of public health, it’s important to widely promote vapor products and other non-combustion tobacco/nicotine products as substitutes for cigarettes. The extensive analysis also estimates

that vapor products likely pose no more than 5% of the risks associated with cigarettes, with the authors further noting that the actual figure may be substantially lower.”

The AVA goes on to explain, “Among the key messages in the exhaustive report is that any potential risks of vapor products must be compared against those posed by smoking. Some harm from sustained exposure to low levels of toxins over many years may yet emerge, but the magnitude of these risks relative to those of sustained tobacco smoking is likely to be small" (TO BE CONTINUED)...

hat chemistry would take two people from opposite sides of life and mold them into one of the top e-liquid companies in the United States? That question is something that can only be answered by understanding the different backgrounds that Sarah and Keith Fairman were raised in.

Sarah comes from an upper class childhood, she was raised with her younger sister by her Mom and Dad. The scenario of a white picket fence and all the finer things in life were pretty much Sarah’s childhood. When Sarah got into college she started dabbling with drugs and started to find herself drinking more than usual. She was slipping on her grades and life became one downward spiral. When her family finally realised what was going on in Sarah’s academics and life, they sat her down and suggested that she get help for her problem. Through many years of struggling Sarah just could not seem to get the grasp on life she once had. “Through many years of struggling Sarah just could not seem to get the grasp on life she once had. After numerous treatment centers, she finally started to realise that there was a better way in life and that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.”

a light at the end of the tunnel. In 2007 while in a treatment center, Sarah got a visit from her Mom and sister, who had come to tell Sarah that her dad has passed from a sudden heart attack that he had the night before. Things had only gotten darker for Sarah at this point, she continued her destructive cycle for a few more years. One day, she finally came to the realisation that enough was enough and walked into a 12 step program. She had fully surrendered and started to get honest. This is where she met Keith in 2009.

Keith was raised in New England in a typical Irish/Italian neighborhood. There were wise guys on the corners and drugs ravaged throughout the neighborhood in his early years. He really never knew his Father and his Mom suffered from drug addiction also. He was an only child being raised by his maternal grandmother who worked well over 50 hours a week just to pay the bills and make sure food was on the table. He

started to get into drugs at the age of 12 and continued well into his 30s. He had relocated to South Florida, accumulated numerous convictions, and at the end of his addiction found himself living under bridges and in abandoned buildings. He was at his lowest and when asked how he felt about life, his response was “just wanting to die” After serving time in a jail in Miami, Florida, he was approached by a fellow inmate and told of a 12 step fellowship that had the power to change his life. Something had stuck that night, he laid there in his bunk and thought about what his life had become. The day he got out, Keith deleted all the numbers in his phone and found a meeting later that day. He literally walked into his first meeting with a black trash bag with all his belongings in it.

After seeing each other at numerous recovery events, Sarah and Keith started to develop a relationship that was something different than they had

ever experienced before. Here were two people that were new in recovery and finally starting to get in touch with their true feelings, that were building a strong bond with each other. They started to date and the rest is history.

After being married for a few months, Sarah was working for her family’s company and Keith was working in phone sales. He was doing great and starting to make a lot of money in the industry he was in. He had just gone to the mall and picked up a cigalike product to see if he could stop smoking. It worked, for the next few months, Keith had started divulging into the industry and started to learn how to make his own e-liquid. He had come up with an idea to bring to market all the flavor profiles that he was creating. He had asked some friends to join him on his business venture. They declined and thought the idea would not work. So, he pushed on himself, first starting out of his house and

building clientele. After a few months, he had lines going out his front door from just word-of-mouth business. Around 6 months in, Sarah suggested to him to get a small retail shop and to try to grow the business. At this time, the company is worldwide.

Diamond Vapor has become a landmark in the East Coast of the United States, it is visited frequently by vapers from all over the world. It is also at the same location where Keith lived on the streets 8 years ago. Diamond Vapor has grown over the past 4 years by leaps and bounds. They now have over 1600 accounts in the USA and their product is showcased in 33 countries.

Some of the lines they are known for include, Doughboys Vaped Goods, started with his partner Anthony Ascenzia, not only is it the first known donut line to hit the market, but when it was released in 60mls at the price point it was released at, it was one of the first

companies known to do this. The Original Boss, which was created by Winn Carter, bottled and sold exclusively through Diamond Vapor. Known for the world famous, Cap’n Crunk and Apple Crack. Winn was just an avid vaper when he met Keith, little did he know that the meeting would change his life forever. Last but not least, is Aisle 7, created for a friend of both Keith and Sarah’s little girl. She was born with 2 forms of cystic fibrosis. They went to the drawing board to see what could be done to help this little girl and make it a lot easier on the mother. “Nora’s Dream” was created with part of all proceeds going to help the family with the cost of the medical bills. Today it is being sold all over the world, and the family is beyond grateful for the recognition that the vaping community has given them. The other flavor in the line is “Flaked” which for the over the past year is the only flavor that Sarah vapes.

Today Diamond Vapor has 19 staff members, most of them are in recovery and started with the company in early recovery and have now got a few years clean. The Fairman family believes in giving back, when asked why they do this for other addicts in recovery, they respond “If we don’t help them, who will”. After visiting the lounge and facility one thing that was noticed is that the Diamond Vapor team are a close knit family, so much, that you can usually find the whole team at the Fairman house hold on holidays. All of the staff are considered uncles or aunts to their 2-year-old little girl, Faith. She is the heart of the company and everything they do every day is for her to live a better life.

As this goes to press, we caught up with Keith and Sarah after their long trip to the UK Vape Show. They were extremely happy considering they were nominated for awards with Vapouround Magazine for Best Cereal of the Year (Nora’s Dream), E-Liquid of the Year (Nora’s Dream) and last but not least, Keith was awarded with “Vaper of the Year” for his work with Aisle 7. To win all 3 of the awards was an amazing feeling for the Fairman’s. We see big things coming from this company, they are in the works of releasing their newest lines “The Cabinet Collection” and “Pretzel Boyz” After following around Keith and Sarah, I’d like to say this in closing, they are the definition of “living the dream” to take something so negative and turn it around is beyond amazing. To see them working together as a team in becoming TPD compliant is like seeing the gears work together on a clock. I only wish the best for them.

DIARY OF A VAPER

with Alex Trott

This feature usually focuses on full-time vapers who have given up smoking for good. What about those who are on the journey from smoking into vaping? What about those who are fighting the good fight, and are actively trying to quit smoking, whilst still under the addictive influence of tobacco?

Responding to your numerous messages of wanting to read about vapers who are also smokers, we caught up with a dual vaper and smoker Alex Trott. Here is Alex’s story.

My name is Alex Trott and I’m a General Manager at Yo! Sushi in Derby. I am what you’d call a dual vaper-smoker. On average, I smoke around 5 cigarettes a day, and pick up my mod to vape around twice as much. I think it’s important to inform others about the steady progress from smoking to vaping, because that’s what it is – a steady journey. My ideal goal is to become tobacco free – that is, zero traditional tobacco cigarettes, and I’m finding vaping is helping me with this. Vaping is a great way to wean yourself of cigarettes, and I’m finding it easier than I thought.

I wanted to quit smoking because of obvious health reasons. I’ve tried to quit for a few years now, especially with pressure from friends and family. I’m finding I like smoking less and less, as if I’m losing enjoyment. What I do know, is that I’ve been smoking for around 14 years, and I need to stop soon.

I found out about vaping when I was house-sharing a few years ago. My flat-mate at the time had a large, boxy vaporiser, which I think cost around £150. I researched vaping for a good

few weeks before deciding anything, speaking to vapers and vaping stores along the way. I soon bought my first starter kit for around £30 which lasted me over a year. My Assistant Manager at Yo! Sushi vapes too, and he recommended VIP vapes. Their customer service is second to none, and their product range is extensive too.

Of course I was always a little wary about vaping – there are so many horror stories out there.

“Of course I was always a little wary about vaping – there are so many horror stories out there. With more evidence and studies being re leased that vaping is the healthier alternative to smoking, I felt it was worth trying vaping, in a serious attempt to quit smoking.”

With more evidence and studies being released that vaping is the healthier alternative to smoking, I felt it was worth trying vaping, in a serious attempt to quit smoking.

I started off on 24mg nicotine strength; this decreased over time to 16mg. Now, I’m on 8mg. My ideal scenario is to be on zero nicotine and quit vaping altogether, but in the meantime, if I’m smoking less, it can only be a good thing. I’m currently vaping Pink Lemonade on my TECC mod, which I’m finding user-friendly and

portable. I also usually add around an eighth of menthol to my e-liquids, to give it a minty edge.

Now when I smoke, I’m already regretting it after a few drags. Smoking is a habit, and one which I’m trying to break. The second half of a cigarette is never that nice, and I think it’s only a matter of time before the first half a cigarette is off-putting to me too. In comparison, when I vape, I enjoy tasting the different flavours and I know I’m taking steps in the right direction to a healthier me. I have also found that I’m less out of breath. I do feel healthier and less wheezy in morning.

To those of you out there who are thinking of vaping, do your research and take the plunge. Go to your local vape store, ask questions. If in doubt, ask some more. My experience, and those of vaping friends, is that these vape stores are very helpful. They’ll explain the different starter kits available, and recommend vape gear to suit your needs. Good luck!

IMC Vapors LLC is an American E-liquid company founded by a pilot in 2015. After realizing he had to quit smoking for his career, he tried every available option on the market to quit. Nothing worked until he found vaping. He then was frustrated by the lack of an affordable, high quality liquid; this frustration led him to found IMC Vapors LLC with the mission of providing a high quality affordable liquid to the masses.

The name “IMC” comes from our founders aviation heritage. IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) is a weather category in aviation in which visibility is so poor the the pilot is forced to fly via reference to the instruments alone. This typically happens when flying into large clouds.

All of our liquids are manufactured in an ISO 4 clean environment to assure that our products are as pure as the air at altitude! IMC is also very involved in advocacy, and is a member of both SFATA and the Right To Be Smoke free. For wholesale inquires, please email danershen@imcvaporsllc.com.

The shear number of shows in America now is becoming out of hand now. There is one nearly every weekend, some of the organisers only worry about getting the vendors to the show and forget about the promotion of the event and getting the local vape shops to their event to ensure the is longevity of the show in the future and sales for the exhibitors. Some shows also forget the importance of advocacy and educating the public, this is key as this will ensure the longevity of this industry. On both of these counts vaper slam are second

to none. They deliver foot traffic to the shows, they ensure local vape shops attend and ensure the people who attend are educated on the current advocacy issues.

So much so that free giveaways were done differently, raising awareness of the plights affecting the Vaping industry. Rather than giving away free samples, the samples were given to an advocacy groups and the companies were invited to make a donation to advocacy groups, these advocacy groups would give a talk to people on the main stage, they

would then give vouchers to the general public. Afterwards the vouchers could be redeemed at the advocacy stand where members of the public could gain more access to the groups.

Whilst this could be thought to drain atmosphere this wasn't the case at all and I take my hat off to Freeze and Mooch at vaperslam for what they are trying to achieve.

As for the show, once again a great atmosphere and it delivers on every aspect, well done guys, keep up the good work.

VAPEVENT, PARIS

20-21 MARCH 2016

apevent was the first vape show I had been to with Vapouround. It is also my first time in Paris, which is a beautiful city which I couldn’t wait to explore. I found everyone so helpful, friendly and chatty. The show itself took place at the Paris Event Centre on 20th and 21st March 2016. The atmosphere was amazing as soon as I walked in, right through to the very end of both days. They had over 200 exhibitors and the foot-fall was also high on both days. The show as a whole was a success, even the layout was well organised across three rooms, giving visitors enough space to walk around and mingle.

I think the thing that stood out for me the most, was the level of interaction between all of the exhibitors. The vaping community is fantastic, really open, warm, and amenable. Expos such as this have enabled me to see that the vaping industry, and despite current and upcoming challenges, it is very much here to stay.

On a personal level I’m proud to say that not only do I work for Vapouround, but that I also work in an industry such as this. I’m looking forward to life on the road with Vapouround, and more importantly meeting with some awesome people.

March 25th&26th saw the second incarnation of the Orlando Vapor Show, held at the Central Florida Fairgrounds convention centre organised by Mark Evans Jr. Who is also one of the organisers for the world Vapor expo in Miami, one of the biggest Vaping shows internationally.

The Orlando shows are smaller and more intimate than the annual World Vapor Expo. This time about 50 exhibitors were present. The show got off to a slow start with footfall quite low on the first morning this was due to these being B2B sessions, but even for the B2B session it was a bit pedestrian. Later in the afternoon it started to pick

up with more B2C people showing up. Throughout the two days there was a series of poker tournaments held on the main stage, and a mini casino open to showcase a new brand called vape poker. All of this adding to the theatrics of the show.

It was obvious that some of the vendors invested heavily in their stands with some beautifully designed stands on offer from the exhibitors.

LONDON,UK 1-3 APRIL 2016

Well homeward bound and this was the first UK show of the year! London was the setting of Vape Jam UK 2016 and did we have high hopes. This was the second instalment by the Vape Jam crew, and after such a successful show in 2015 we were expecting great things. Well needless to say if your expectations are high you leave yourself open to disappointed and boy were we disappointed.

Unfortunately we were unable to do our job successfully and completely as we had our bags confiscated on a number of occasions. This was down to another magazine causing problems with the organisers, this put us in the wrong frame of mind to do our job.

We were then embroiled in debates and confrontation on a regular basis, being threatened with eviction from the premises if we handed one magazine out to any of our customers. As we were not allowed to do our jobs properly we can only report on what we saw and heard, and in a nutshell many people seemed disappointed, there wasn’t a good buzz or vibe around the place. Given the current attack on vaping you would have thought the organisers would have spared a few minutes stage time for two of the USA’s biggest advocates, unfortuanately this was not granted to them and that seems very disappointing as we are all fighting for the same thing.

Maybe next year the organisers will go back to the drawing board and get it right

like they did in year one, or maybe the success of their rivals Vaper Expo UK has over shadowed the good work they did and now makes them look little more than average.

WINSTAR WORLD CASINO & RESORT, OKLAHOMA 5-7 APRIL 2016

e were excited to be in Oklahoma for the first time since our American tour began.

WinStar World Casino & Resort was the venue billed to host the next vape event, just an hour away from Dallas, Texas.

After travelling for around an hour out of Dallas, we realised that we were in the middle of nowhere. This immediately concerned us, as we were wondering just how many people may be prepared to travel this far out with nothing around them for a vape event. Our fears came true, and on the first day, if there were 20 visitors, it was a lot. There was not much joy in the room either, as exhibitors were getting more and more disgruntled and anxious.

On a positive note, there were a lot of interesting things on stage and some great speakers talking about advocacy and the effects. There was plenty of helpful information, and a lot of business owners sharing knowledge and experiences, which somewhat elevated this event to make it interesting. Day 2 and Day 3 never really picked up that much either. It seemed to be a smaller show than we were used to attending. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as small shows can be great too, although this one obviously lacked the marketing needed to attract many visitors. Either that or they were just too far out that nobody could make it. Although the effort went in, it is hard to say too much about this show as the lack of visitors seemed to overcloud anything good about it. Hopefully they can put it on again next year in a more suitable venue.

VAPECON, TEXAS | 9-10 APRIL 2016

So we travelled from Oklahoma to one of our favourite places in The States, San Antonio!

This was the second time we were about to embark on the home of the Alamo, and we were all very excited. Unlike last time, we stayed downtown amongst the thick of it all. We loved the great night life and chatting to friendly people, whilst the amazing river walk and picturesque town, could easily be mistaken for a picture perfect postcard. The convention was in the main centre which was based on San Antonio’s Riverwalk. VapeCon were the hosts this time and wow – what a great job they did. The check-in process was quick and efficient, and upon entry to the main hall we knew we were back in our element. There was the usual mix of large exhibitors with their big stands, and the smaller companies occupying the smaller booths. There was a definite buzz about the place and a nice steady flow of traffic

with people coming in from all over. By the end of day one, the place was very busy and large clouds were all that could be seen.

This show attracted some great companies, from the usual can didates like Strawberry Queen, EFX Liquids, The Pancake Man and many more, to new companies that are starting to become regulars on the circuit like Naked fish. This fantastic mix of exhibitors ensures the average visitor has a great choice when looking around the show.

The entertainment was top notch, with plenty of giveaways and some fantastic competitions, as well as a cloud chasing contest with cash prizes. A selection of top class DJs and MCs enter tained visitors and exhibitors alike, who seemed to enjoy a well organised and very successful show. Follow these guys as I know they have more dates coming soon!

East Coast Vaping Circuit Daytona Beach

Again, another first for our USA tour, Daytona Beach! We have seen the movies featuring this world famous beach and upon arrival... WOW! It was nothing like what is depicted in the films. There was an air of the early 90s about this place, it seemed dated and sparse, and didn’t live up to what it could have been. I think this is just because of the hype. We didn’t let that stop us, and what a time we had!

We arrived at the convention centre in Daytona full of high hopes, and we were not disappointed. Although there did not seem to be many large outlandish stands, there seemed to be a few great names, including Diamond Vapors, Liquid EFX, Action Fluid and Strawberry

“The event did have a heavy focus on advocacy which was nice to see, and many people supporting the Florida Advocacy group, with the Vaping Advocate magazine even offering free space within the magazine for anybody who purchased membership, which we thought was a great thing to do for a fantastic cause.”

22-24 April 2016

Queen. The turnout was good, and people seemed to be enjoying the event for what it was.

There wasn’t the usual loud PA system with blaring music. It was quite refreshing that the music seemed to be contained at the back of the show where the stage was set up, allowing vendors to be able to do business without taking anything away from the whole atmosphere of the show.

All in all, this seemed to be well executed, well thought out and a pleasure to attend. I think that most vendors were happy, and guests seemed to be delighted with their haul. We will look forward to next year!

APRIL 15-17 TH 2016

Held in Messe Frankfurt on April 15th to 17th 2016. This fair saw the combination of both shisha and vape hitting the show floor. One half of the hall was dedicated to shisha and the other to vape. I have to say I'm not 100% convinced that this was

the right choice, for the first time since I can remember I left a vape show actually smelling of smoke.

Don't get me wrong, the exhibit was well planned out and the stands were excellent, but most of the guests who were there came to see the shisha stands, although when they looked at the Vaping part their curiosity got the better of them and they would come over to try. This in itself is a good thing, if the idea is to get smokers from tobacco the chance to educate people on Vaping is always a good opportunity.

The event was truly international, brands from across the globe attended, to name a few countries represented; South Korea, China, Malaysia, Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Croatia, U.K & USA.

There was a balance of liquid and mod manufacturers present.

All said and done, this was a good event and the exposure it bought to people who wouldn't normally know about Vaping gave it something a little bit extra.

BIRMINGHAM 6-8TH MAY 2016

The Vaper Expo UK experience just keeps getting better and better. It has taken just one year to become the ‘must attend’ vaping event in the UK.

When the first event opened last year it was clear from the outset that the demand was bigger than anyone could have anticipated.

The huge queue which built up three hours before the doors opened was the first clue and the positive reviews from vendors and visitors alike confirmed that this had the potential to be huge.

So the event organisers wasted no time in securing a vastly bigger chunk of NEC exhibition space this year and extended the event to three days.

There were exhibitors from around the world, especially the UK, Europe and USA, and the very biggest names in the global vaping community were there for this event.

Once again there were queues were building up a full three hours before the event opened but, this time round, they were waiting inside rather than outside the NEC.

Obviously Vapouround Magazine has to declare a pretty big interest here - we

were the official media partners for the expo and are enormously proud to be associated with such a great event. Every visitor to Vaper Expo UK 2016 was presented with a special goody bag by the Vapouround team which included an official show guide running to nearly 300 pages.

This was a very slick operation indeed and the NEC is proving to be an excellent choice of venue for a top level vaping event such as this.

With massive halls, an ideal location just outside Birmingham, top class facilities and the Resort World entertainment and shopping complex next door there could hardly have been better facilities.

One of the first things that was noticeable was just how much bigger this event was compared with a year ago and the next thing was of the amazing lengths many of the vendors had gone to in a bid to make their stands as eyecatching as possible.

Many of the exhibition stands were nothing short of spectacular, mini works of art in their own right and for those who liked to post updates on social media sites, this gave them lots of opportunities to get some really great pictures online.

Once again this event offered something for everybody from experienced vapers to those who were taking their first tentative steps into the world of vaping. There was so much to do at Vaper Expo UK that it was impossible to get bored for even a moment.

Visitors tried out new juice flavours, got up close with some of the latest hardware on the market, picked up great tips and advice from industry

leaders and found out about some of the developments which are around the corner.

One thing that most vapers have in common is a huge passion for vaping and that passion was on display at every stand for the full three days of the event. There were also talks about important issues facing the vaping industrysuch as about the increasing levels of regulation that government’s are imposing on vaping products - cloud chasing competitions and demonstrations of impressive vaping tricks.

There was even a special appearance from Ray Dorset, the frontman of British rockers Mungo Jerry, best known for their 1970s hit “In The Summertime.”

Ray is a founder member of the group which is still going strong and still touring 46 years later. They have a new album which has just been released and a new e-liquid in his honour - Mungo Cherry Vape Juice - was launched at Vaper Expo on May by JuiceEFruit and proved to be a huge hit with the visitors to the NEC.

JuiceEFruit’s Johnny Lovell said: “We are really honoured to be associated with

Ray who founded Mungo Jerry nearly 50 years ago and is still making records and touring after all this time.

“Mungo Cherry is proving to be an instant hit and is absolutely flying off the shelves since the launch at Vaper Expo.”

The event was also a massive springboard for the brand new Dinner Lady range of e-liquids which entered its first ever vaping expo and was promptly voted Best Stand and Exhibitor.

As word spread about the new range the Dinner Lady Facebook page attracted nearly 2,000 likes in a matter of days and all the Dinner Lady stock was sold within a couple of days of the expo finishing and excited buyers managed to completely clear out the warehouse.

Dinner Lady spokesman Mark Bentley said: “We had high hopes for the Dinner Lady range of e-liquids, but the response has been phenomenal, it is beyond our wildest expectations.”

Vaper Expo is firmly on the vaping world map after just a year and it is now helping other businesses do the same. Watch out for The Vaper Expo - The Return which will be back in October at the NEC. Details will be released soon.

VAPOR ROYALTY THE BEAST

After progressing through my vaping journey, I have come across plenty of different brands of cotton designed for wicking a coil, some were poor, some were average and others were fantastic.I must admit at first I had very little knowledge about all the different brands of cotton out there, I just figured cotton was cotton. As a beginner, I tried organic cotton balls from a supermarket chain, it was a horrible mistake! It tasted burnt and I think the cotton could not manage the heat from the coils. However, I recently I discovered The Beast from Vapor Royalty and found it to be lightyears ahead of my previous (and disastrous) attempts at trying out cotton. There is a certain set of attributes one should look for when checking out cotton used for vaping, including but not limited to;

• The absorption of juice. Some can take a while to soak up whereas others take in the juice within seconds and continue to retain it.

• No funny or 'cottony' aftertaste that causes the flavour of the juice to be compromised.

• Ease of wicking – as some cotton can be really difficult to get to the right size

for your coils successfully in a rush

• Preferably organic with no additives or bleach

• Price is also a big factor in choosing cotton and it all depends on where you buy it, what company supplies it and the quality of the product.

'Vapor Royalty' produce a range of 4 cottons, each one designed for different uses including temperature control, tanks and RBAs. Today I am going to review 'The Beast' which is made specially for dripping on RDAs.

The Beast is grown ethically in the USA and is not bleached nor is anything untoward added.

This product is neatly presented in a circular aluminium tin that contains a length of rolled cotton that is heat resistant, 100% Organic and Pesticide/ Chemical Free.

I found this cotton to be extremely easy to roll up and insert into the coils on my RDA. I noticed that I didn't waste as much cotton as I did with other brands, because all I had to do was snip off a length of cotton, and rip it down the middle.

The cotton itself is superior in terms of its absorption, and straight away, it started

to take all the drops of eliquid without leaking. It also allows you to increase the amount of inhales you can get without dry hits, due to the excellent juice holding capacity of this cotton. Another really appealing factor of this product is the fact that I could not taste any cotton whilst vaping, nor any funky after tastes, just 100% flavour.

A tin of The Beast will set you back about £6 but it is most definitely worth it! If you haven't tried it already, you ought to. When it comes to cotton, you want a quality product that works well - and I can safely say Vapor Royalty have designed this cotton brilliantly and with fellow vapers in mind.

The Curve 2 Mini

by Peaches Atkinson

Aesthetically the Curve 2 mini resembles the eLeaf iStick mini, The size is the same, as are the buttons and the 1050mAh battery capacity. However, the Curve 2 is able to vape up to 20 Watts, whereas the iStick mini goes up to just 10 Watts.

The Curve 2 Mini comes in several appealing colours, such as Black, Silver, Blue and Hot Pink.

There is a circular screen on the top of the device that displays Wattage, Voltage, Battery Percentage and will show (in seconds and milliseconds )how long each inhale is.

The range of wattage is between 5.0W-20.0W and the range of voltage is 3.3V-5.0V.

To change these parameters, you simply have to press the up or down buttons on the front of the device.

To charge the battery, there is a microUSB port on the bottom of the mod, and although it is possible to vape on whilst charging, I wouldn't recommend it as it can get quite hot.

It only takes about 20-30mins to charge up completely, but the battery can drain quickly depending on how much you vape.

Unfortunately, this device does is not a sub-ohm device, meaning it will not work with a coil that is under 1.0 Ω, so, technically, you shouldn't expect big clouds. However, I used a Kangertech Subtank Nano with a 1.2Ω OCC coil and the inhale and vapour production is just about what you would expect whilst subohming, which, in my opinion, is great! Also, the flavour you get with this device is pretty good, which again, is a huge plus.

Overall, I found this piece of kit to be fab! Definitely an everyday set up, capable of cracking clouds and fantastic flavour, not to mention a decent price of around £20 for a kit that includes a CS Micro 2ml capacity tank.

In summary, I found this kit to be extremely handy and durable. It’s great for when you are out and about and need a slightly more discreet device.

SIGELEI 213W

by Peaches Atkinson

As a recent release from Sigelei, this mod is rather small, but still packs a very hefty punch that sets it apart from the crowd.

It’s technical specifications are as follows:

Size : 88x44x29mm

Temperature Control (between 100℃300℃/200℉-570℉)

VW Mode (10W to 213W, in 0.1W increments)

Brass 510 spring loaded pin Made from Carbon Fibre and Zinc Alloy Resistance Range: 0.1Ω-3.0Ω

Dual 18650 batteries

Input Voltage 6.4V-8.4V

Output Voltage : 1.0V-7.5V

The mod is coated in carbon fibre with either gold or dark grey accents, it is aesthetically very attractive. Even with batteries, it is quite light in weight, this may come as welcomed news to some of you, whereas others may prefer a heavier and more substantially weighted device. In terms of performance, you can easily

push it up to about 80W-100W no problem. One of the main selling points of this mod is that it can go up to 213W, unfortunately, most standard 18650 batteries won’t be able to cope with the increased wattage.

The Sigelei 213W is rather unique in terms of it’s ‘Power Up’ function, allowing you to increase or decrease the power of the vape when using RDAs or RTAs. This allows you to automatically heat a coil quickly at a high wattage (for example 130Watts) for a split-second before it goes back to a more preferable and manageable amount of Watts (for example 75Watts). Basically, all this means is you get better performance without the drawbacks of reduced battery life, dry hits and having to wait for a coil to heat up over a longer period of time (of which could damage and over heat your coils). Consider it as a short ‘boost’ to your coils.

Two 18650 batteries are required to power this mod, and it features a micro-USB port (although I strongly recommend that you use a dedicated

charger rather than charging via the device). Generally, I found that two 2500mAh batteries tend to drain quite quickly- especially when operating at a high wattage.

In summary, this device is as simple or as advanced as you make it, for example, you can use it with a tank at 2.0ohm but can also use it with a 0.2ohm coil on an RDA. I think that the 213W mod is easy on the eye as well as being ergonomically pleasing, it’s ever so practical to fit in a pocket or handbag, and doesn’t look too obvious when out in public. It is well designed in terms of it’s functionality and minimalist layout. This mod from Sigelei will set you back about $90 which, for what you are getting, is actually pretty decent.

Despite not looking like a bulky box mod, it’s features are on par with the top devices out there. I really enjoyed this mod it was easy, safe and impressive.

Moo E-liquids are creators of premium E-liquids that all feature a tasty, creamy milkshake blend. Based in California they craft all of their juices using high quality ingredients and it’s easy to tell that a lot of work has gone in to blending these simple, yet extremely effective juices. Today I’m sampling three of their delicious juices and I’m very excited to give you my thoughts on them!

Banana Milk

First up from Moo E-liquids is Banana Milk. It’s a fruity, creamy blend of banana and smooth milk with a hint of vanilla, shaken up to create a beautifully smooth and moreish banana milkshake

vape. The smoothness is definitely a big feature throughout the entire Moo E-liquids range, with all three juices being not only easy to vape but extremely addictive. I could certainly see myself getting through a bottle of Banana Milk in no time at all. Huge thumbs up from me here.

Strawberry Milk

Next up is Strawberry Milk, featuring the same smooth blend of milk and creams as Banana Milk but with a slightly sweeter strawberry twist. It’s a very authentic tasting strawberry vape, more so than a lot of juices I’ve tried where the strawberry can be a little artificial or chemical tasting. Again this is another supremely smooth vape, and although I can’t say I liked it as much as Banana Milk it’s all down to personal taste so definitely give this one a try if you love a good strawberry milkshake vape.

Vanilla Almond Milk

The real treat from Moo E-liquid’s range of fantastic juices comes in the form of Vanilla Almond Milk. Again it’s a similar milkshake blend but the vanilla is definitely ramped up in this juice. The

real winner here is the subtle taste of almond that runs all the way through this E-liquid. It brings the perfect hint of saltiness to the mix to excellently contrast the sweet vanilla cream blend. As sweet and savoury juices go Vanilla Almond Milk has jumped straight to the top of my list and I highly recommend everyone to go out and try this juice. I highly doubt you’ll be disappointed!

Working out of Palm Bay, Florida, Sweetwix are a premium E-liquid manufacturer with some interesting flavour combinations. The Sweetwix motto is ‘Life Is Sweet’ and so are their juices. All of the flavours on offer here are dessert-based or have a chocolatey twist, so those without a sweet tooth may want to look elsewhere.

Sweet Wix KLP

First up from Sweetwix comes an absolute standard in E-liquids. I’m willing to bet you’ve tried at least one juice like KLP before. It’s Key lime pie. The question here is if Sweetwix have done enough to separate this juice from the hundreds, maybe even thousands of similar flavours on the market. Unfortunately the answer from me is no.

That’s not to say this is a bad juice, it has everything you’d expect from a key lime pie vape. Tangy lime with sweet pie crust and a thick dollop of cream on top. The flavours work, you don’t need me to tell you that, but it just doesn’t stand out for me. It needs something else to separate it from the crowd. Overall a good key lime pie vape, exactly what you’d expect and nothing more.

Sweet Wix BTP

Something a bit more interesting now from Sweetwix BTP is based on a blueberry tootsie pop. I’ve never had one before but as I understand it’s a blueberry flavoured lollipop with a chewy chocolate centre, definitely sounds intriguing. The initial flavour of this juice is the blueberry lollipop, definitely a sweeter, more candy version of the fruit than the usual blueberry vape. It’s joined by a chocolate flavour that doesn’t quite hit the mark. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, chocolate is an incredibly hard flavour to translate

in to the vaping world. Many have tried and many have failed, only a few juices manage to capture the luxurious flavour, and unfortunately Sweetwix haven’t quite managed it here. The chocolate tastes artificial and a bit nothingy, it doesn’t blend particularly well with the blueberry either. I personally think this juice would have been better as just a candy blueberry vape, but respect to Sweetwix for trying to create something unique. It’s certainly not a bad vape, just not to my taste, and I’m certain this juice will appeal to a lot of people out there.

Sweet Wix RTP

RTP is essentially the same juice as BTP but with raspberry instead of blueberry. As such, it has many of the same shortcomings as the previous juice but I do happen to think the chocolate blends a fair bit better with the raspberry than the blueberry. I definitely prefer RTP to BTP but again it needs some refining and a better chocolate flavour in my opinion.

The first thing to mention about all of Bord02’s E-liquids is that they come packaged in glass bottles with pipettes, and feature some of the most colourful and imaginative labels on the market. It’s clear that they put a lot of thought into their packaging and it certainly pays off. The first juice I tried from this selection

DripforgeForbidden

was Slapshot. Featuring a masked hockey player on the label I really wasn’t too sure what to expect. As it turns out, Slapshot is a sweet and sour candy vape. The sweetness comes through initially in droves, tasting a bit like a skittle or similar hard candy, but it’s soon joined by a seriously sour punch that definitely took me by surprise the first time I tasted it. It’s definitely an interesting flavour, the sourness never allowing it to become overly sweet or sickly. Overall I did enjoy this juice but it’s definitely not an all-day vape in my book.

Jellyfish

Jellyfish is a juice that’s definitely more up my street. Smooth peanut butter mixed with sticky, sweet strawberry jam. It’s an absolute classic combination that unfortunately doesn’t always translate well in to the vaping world. Thankfully Bord02 have got it right with Jellyfish, expertly blending the sweet and savoury flavours to create one of my favourite peanut butter vapes out there at the moment. Definitely give this juice a try if you’re a peanut butter fiend like myself.

Macaron A La Rose

Last up from Bord02 today is Macaron A La Rose. This juice is about as French as it gets combining the taste of a freshly baked macaron, straight from a patisserie, with rose. I think this E-liquid is going to be fairly divisive as rose is a bit of a love or hate flavour. I did enjoy this juice, although it can get a little perfumey on the tastebuds and the rose is a little overpowering. If you’re looking for something unique that you probably won’t find anywhere else give this juice a try.

I have the pleasure of sampling a juice from Dripforge’s Forbidden range today. I’ve tried a few of their other E-liquids before but never anything from this particular range. Dripforge hand-craft all of their liquids in Alabama, with a view to create perfect juices with the consumer always in mind. Let’s see how this E-liquid measures up.

Pineapple Express

The first thing you’ll notice about Pineapple Express, as with most E-liquids is the presentation. It’s bottled nicely enough, a hard plastic instead of the glass often used when packaging premium juices. The label is fairly minimalistic, a picture of a pineapple with the Forbidden logo across it diagonally. All the important information about the juice, like it’s 80/20 vg/pg ratio is featured as well. All in all it’s quite a simple package but sometimes less is more and I don’t think it takes anything away from the juice. Sometimes it’s just best to let the E-liquid speak for itself. I’m sure it’s no surprise that the featured

flavour in this juice is pineapple. I’ve always been a huge fan of tropical fruit vapes and Pineapple Express has an extra twist to keep things fresh. As you would expect the initial inhale is juicy, slightly acidic pineapple. The flavourings they’ve used here are pretty much spot on. You might as well be eating a pineapple, vaping this juice. By the exhale I was left wanting a little more, something to really drive it home, and Dripforge delivered. A slightly sour, creamy yoghurt flavour is introduced to the pineapple and they mingle beautifully. The blend is excellent, with the perfect amount of yoghurt flavouring keeping it subtle but ever present. It’s a stroke of vape genius and for me, lifts this juice to ADV status.

I’m definitely looking forward to tasting

some more from Dripforge in the future, to see if their flavours are always as well balanced as Pineapple Express. For now, I urge you to get your hands on this juice and try it for yourself, especially if you’re into fruity vapes.

By Peach Atkinson

Director's Cut is a line of premium juices by the popular online juice company Vapemate.

All juices that I tried out are in 10ml glass bottles, have 3mg nicotine and are at 80% VG.

I was very excited to try out these juices after having a positive experience with their standard line of customisable eLiquids.

There are currently 5 juices in this line and all feature a glass bottle complete with a child proof safety cap.

Take 1

A definite zap of lime is present whilst inhaling. It is a rather enjoyable lime that reminds me of green Wine Gums, slightly artificial but delectable nonetheless.

As I exhaled, I could pick up on a mixture of fresh cherries and raspberries, both helped to counteract the lime's sharpness. Overall, a very crisp tasting eJuice – optimal for your morning vape!

Take 2

Firstly, the smell is overwhelmingly lovely!

This juice tastes just like a glass of ice

Buddha Dew by Vaperz Cloud

Have you ever looked for a juice that tasted like Mountain Dew? Well, look no further – Vaperz Cloud is a company based in Virginia, USA that have come up with the ultimate Mountain Dew flavoured vape.

As a citrus vape connoisseur, I tend to be quite picky when it comes to any citrus flavours, as some can be overwhelmingly sour or can taste like washing up liquid. Luckily, I really enjoyed Buddha Dew, I found the flavouring to be on point and not at all too potent.

To be honest, I have rarely seen soda flavoured eJuices, a few cola ones and one or two Dr.Pepper ones, but I have never come across a Mountain Dew one. I'm sure they are out there, but I am hooked on Buddha Dew as it is so true to life and easy to vape on.

My juice came in a 60ml plastic unicorn bottle, 3mg nicotine and max VG.

cold pink lemonade- perfectly executed and is certainly the ideal flavour for a hot summer's day. It is not too sour nor too sweet, but is neatly balanced right in the middle.

I found this flavour from Vapemate to be a deliciously energising vape!

Take 3

There is a fruity aroma to this juice that is mouth-wateringly delectable. The best way I can describe 'Take 3', is a fragrantly fruity herbal tea.

The fruitiness is mild yet juicy and the hint of spiced tea really creates a unique flavour profile.

Overall, a one of a kind juice that has the potential to be an all day vape!

Take 4

A superbly sweet concoction of fresh summer fruits and soft cream, combine to make this liquid my favourite of the Director's Cut line of juices.

It is always nice to try an eliquid like 'Take 4' and I respect the difficulty in creating a juice that blends so well together. Definitely top notch stuff! I would recommend this flavour to all of those who are fruity fans.

Take 5

'Take 5' is a citrusy cereal flavour that does not overstimulate your tastebuds, like some brands unfortunately do. It is a relatively soft cereal combined with fresh and creamy milk that counteracts any tartness that the citrus may give off.

The label is rather plain but still stylish, it has several warnings including 'no under 18s', 'Contains nicotine' and an ingredients list. I don't think this bottle looks like it would appeal to children, as the prominent colours are black and gold, no bright colours or fancy font. Smelling this juice does not do it justice, the aroma is pleasant enough, however tasting it is far more delightful.

Tasting Buddha Dew is nothing short of amazing! You get strong notes of citrus that is the perfect ratio between lemon and lime, exactly like a can of Mountain Dew. There is also a subtle sweetness that compliments the citrus, making this juice even more realistic.

You may think that due to the sweet citrus, this juice could not be an all day vape, but in my opinion this could be an all week vape! I never get tired of the mouth-watering sensation I get with Buddha Dew.

A 60ml bottle of this fizzy drink flavoured eLiquid sets you back around £20-£25, which for some is a little steep, however I love it so much that I feel it is worth it.

I found this to be a phenomenal juice, something I really found to be delicious and great vapour production. Overall, I would give Buddha Dew a solid

Moose Knuckle e-liquid

All the way from Alaska, USA, I discovered Moose Knuckle's eJuices at the Birmingham Vaper Expo.

It was refreshing to try the line of juices displayed on their stand, for two reasons.

One being I have never tried an Alaskan eJuice and two was the fact the MK creators were adamant that their juices were totally unique and they would only release a juice if it was 100% perfect and had met their high standards.

Now, I had a bit of a dilemma – were they just blowing smoke (no pun intended!)? Or were the juices as good as they promised?

Trying the eLiquids instantly made my mind up, the juices really were of high quality, and despite trying similar flavours from other brands, I found Moose Knuckle's to be just that little bit different.

The bottles I received were all 15ml, 3mg nicotine, 70% VG and had child proof caps.

They have a bright orange cap, as well as a matching orange label. The glass itself is tinted brown, which helps protect the juice from sunlight.

I was given 5 different flavours: Krispy Krack, Watermelon Candy, Tundra Punch, French Custard and Wild Berry Skittlez.

First of all, I am trying 'Tundra Punch' Tundra Punch

Straight away the fact that this is a fruit punch flavour really appeals to me. Trying this juice out on a dripper really accentuates the blast of flavours including cherry, red apple, orange and pineapple.

A wave of fruity goodness hits your tongue on the inhale and as you sit there vaping, this eliquid transports your mind and tastebuds to a tropical beach, drinking fruit punch. It's amazing how similar Tundra Punch is to a glass of the real thing – although I wouldn't

recommend drinking an eJuice! This is a fantastic summertime vape, and is both delicious and revitalising, bringing together a sweet, mouth watering blend of fruits to your palette. I was thoroughly delighted with Tundra Punch, and would give it 4/5

Wild Berry Skittlez

Wild Berry Skittlez is just that- berry flavoured skittles. I had been on the lookout for a decent skittles vape and upon discovering that Moose Knuckle had developed one, I had to try it!

On the inhale there is a rush of mixed fruit candy that includes tastes like strawberry, raspberry and cherry. The taste is reminiscent of skittles in the fact that it does taste a little synthetic - not in a bad way, but rather the artificialness tasted when eating sweets.

When you exhale there is a unique sensation of tasting both a rich sweetness and a tart sourness. Overall, it is hands down a skittles vape, no doubt about that, it tasted was just like eating sweets but without the sugar high! 3/5

Watermelon Candy

Candy watermelon is quite a popular flavour at the moment in the vape world and I have tried a few.

Moose Knuckle's version is quite mellow, great for an all the time vape due to it not being too powerful. The primary taste is obviously watermelon candy, the watermelon being mild and fruity with a touch of sourness and the candy counteracting it with a pleasing sugary sweetness.

In conclusion , I found this juice to be a very soft take on a widely popular flavour, and it has the capability to be an all day vape. I liked it for these reasonsespecially the muted nature of the watermelon. 3/5

French Custard

A creamy and delicious take on custard that is both smooth and wholesome.I have tried many custard flavours and it is a widely sought after taste. This juice has a unique element of vanilla spice, that sets this eLiquid apart from other custard vapes.

Inhaling this on my dripper, there was a warm, sweet and mild taste that really compliments your taste buds.

As a custard flavoured eliquid, I found this juice to deliver in terms of accuracy when it comes to getting the flavouring right.

To conclude, my experience with French Custard by Moose Knuckles was rather enjoyable and I would say it easily makes it into my Top 3 custard vapes. 4/5

Krispy Krack

I have tried a fair few donut flavoured eJuices during the time I have been vaping. I found most tasted the same, they really need to have something unique that jumps out at you. Many seem to taste like a dull, repetitive and bland take on a glazed donut.

So, with a bit of trepidation, I dripped some Krispy Krack on to my RDA, and inhaled.

This donut flavour is quite potent in a good way as most others come across as unexciting. To taste, Krispy Krack is a mouth wateringly vivid and powerful glazed donut.

There is an appetising sense of sugary, fried dough. It is so accurate, it almost feels like you are eating a donut. I was very pleased with Krispy Krack and its strong tasting flavour. I will definitely be vaping this again and again! 4/5

Crunchy Cream Donuts – Frosted Lemon

80% VG, 3mg Nicotine, 60ml

'Crunchy Cream Donuts' is a company from the USA specialising in doughnut flavoured vapes. So far, they have released two flavours - One being raspberry and the other (of which I will be reviewing) is a lemon flavour. Initially I was very excited to try out a lemon doughnut vape, as you get lots of doughnut flavours and you get lots of citrusy/lemon flavours, but there are not that many that factor both of these diverse flavours into one juice.

The bottle I received is 60ml (roughly 2.1fl.oz) and made out of clear glass. It has a dripper cap and has a simple label that is quite similar in its layout to the popular doughnut chain Krispy Kreme. I feel that the cover was not really aimed

at young children, although due to the relatively bright colouring some people may disagree with me.

There are warnings on the label, informing that this juice is only for people over the age of 18 and also that this eLiquid contains nicotine, both things that I find to be important to display.

I have reviewed quite a few doughnut eJuices out there, and few have been as smooth or delicate as this one. As I have said before, there is a very fine line between being too intense or too bland.

I found Frosted Lemon from Crunchy Cream Donuts to be right in betweenwhich is a good thing for me, however it all comes down to personal preference, some like mild vapes and some like full on flavour.

At first I felt this juice resembled more of a lemon meringue pie than doughnut, but after a few tries, a creamy lemon with a deliciously satisfying doughnut flavour emerged in full force.

The lemon is sweet, subtle and not at all sour, which I think is a really nice touch because occasionally I get lemon flavoured vapes that taste a lot like a citrus smelling cleaning product (although this is not the case with Frosted Lemons!)

The doughnut element of this juice is super realistic, it amazes me as to how one can turn such an authentic doughnut taste into an eLiquid!

and I believe this was from their cloud chasing range instead of the standard range (which features 30% VG)

A cracking thing about Crunchy Cream Donut's juice is that despite the relatively strong components of lemon and doughnut, it is incredibly smooth on the inhale, giving it the potential to be an all day vape.

This juice is at 80% VG, so naturally it has decent cloud production, without compromising too much when it comes to flavour.

To conclude, I enjoyed the realistic flavouring of this liquid and the rather unique mix of doughnut and lemon- as well as the creamy aspect. The vapour production was decent and the overall smoothness I experienced whilst vaping was amazing. I would give this juice 4/5.

I recently came across this eJuice at the Vaper Expo in Birmingham, and a friend had recommended it. I find that it is important to support up and coming UK juice lines, as a lot of the time, it seems that American juices take all the attention, when we have some incredible products right here in our back garden. Today I am going to take a look at The Ace of Vapez from Wolverhampton, UK. TAOV has their own line of cloud chasing eliquids – all the labels feature a caricature of Yoda (from Star Wars) and are named (rather uniquely!) after different bodily fluids, such as Sweat, Tears, P and Blood. Today I am reviewing 'Blood'.

The bottle that 'Blood' came in was plastic and held 70ml (2.5 fl.oz) worth of this fantastically juicy flavoured liquid. It came as 80% VG and 0.3% nicotine,

The label provides an ingredient list, PG/ VG ratio, nicotine percentage, batch number, an expiry date and several warnings including 'No under 18s' and 'Contains nicotine'. I found it was extremely informative and useful to have these details readily available, as many brands do not include warnings.

The twisty bottle cap itself unfortunately is not childproof, however it does not leak. In my experience I would recommend you place this bottle high up or hidden from young children in case they ingest it.

The first time I tried this juice, I had no idea what the flavour description was, I just went with what my nose told me smelled nice. When I sniffed 'Blood', I knew then and there I had to try this incredible elixir.

The rich, juicy taste pulled me in and grabbed my attention. After a few puffs on my dripper, I could pick out a luscious strawberry candy mixed with pear candy. To me, it felt like a fruit punch flavour,

although more on the strawberry side rather than anything else.

It was ever so sweet and mouth watering, I keep going back to TAOV's 'Blood' as an all day vape. The fact that it is strong in taste is what appeals to me, I thoroughly enjoy strong tasting and sweet flavours.

Now, you may assume that this particular juice that I tried would be compromised in vapour production, due to the fact that the flavouring was so strong, but at 80% VG, it is actually astonishing.

I purchased this juice for about £15 although on their website they have the option of a 30ml (£9.99or a 100ml £28.99) which is a little pricey but in my opinion it is well worth it.

All in all, I found TAOV's 'Blood' to be a great all rounder, as it has decent cloud production, a stellar taste and a well informed label.

I would rate this juice a 4.5/5 as I enjoyed it but the only minor problem was the price - but so close to being 'The Perfect Vape'!

REVIEWS

I will be reviewing Pounding Clouds by Drippy Lee today. The bottle I received was 60ml, 80% VG and had 0.3% of nicotine, it retails for about £20. When you first see the packaging of Drippy Lee’s Pounding Clouds, you have to smile to yourself – the juice bottles comes in a aluminium foil cake tin, something that unfortunately could be misconstrued as appealing to young people. Personally, I thought it was an interesting touch.

Now, when you take the lid off the tin, you will come across a 60ml bottle of pound cake flavoured eLiquid, an empty 30ml unicorn bottle and two 5 ml bottles of blueberry and strawberry flavouring (do not vape the flavouring on its own!).

This is an entirely unique marketing strategy that is a stroke of genius, as you can mix the base of pound cake eliquid with either strawberry or blueberry depending on your preferred flavouring or whatever your tastebuds fancy!

The first thing that I noticed whilst tasting this eLiquid was how realistic it was. I could pick out a sweet, crumbly cake that melts in your mouth, it was richly sophisticated yet simple at the same time, a multitude of flavours that entice your tongue - which was brilliant as it tastes like the real thing just without the calories.

Out of the hundreds of juices that I have tried over my time as a vaper, there have only been a few that were so lifelike, and

Drippy Lee’s Pounding Clouds is way up there - I cannot convey enough how authentic it tasted!

I briefly tried mixing the blueberry and strawberry flavouring with the pound cake in the 30ml bottle provided, and the result was a mouth watering concoction of juicy strawberries and plump tart blueberries. I think that the option to mix in your own preferred flavouring to an eJuice is a truly innovative step in the vape world.

I found the production of vapour is magnificent, and at 80% VG you can see why.

Overall I must say I have never tried such a real tasting vaping experience and enjoyed it immensely. It never got sickly and I could vape it for extended periods of time. For these reasons, I will give this juice a 4/5!

Knight's Creed – Dignity

The whole Knight's Creed line comes in metal tube containers that are exquisitely designed with Middle Aged styled graphics, with things like crests and crowns. Also, there are clear warnings and information about the juices-something I find to be ever more important in this day and age.

In regards to flavouring, this delicious instalment from Knight's Creed, Dignity is a fruity assortment of honeydew, cantaloupe, mango and papaya. The bottle I received was 20ml in volume, 3mg nicotine and 70% VG. I was keen on trying this juice due to its flavour profile of scrumptious mixed fruits –little did I know that I would shortly be making this my all day vape!

Upon opening the child proof cap, I sniffed this juice and I could really pick up on the different melons used in it. It made my mouth water and was an extremely pleasant sensation.

I soon dripped it on my RDA, and was overwhelmed with the ripe taste of juicy fruits. I particularly liked the hint of papaya and mango. I don't think I have ever tried a mango flavoured eJuice and this one, straight away, tasted realistic and smooth whilst still having a tart kick.

On the inhale, the medley of flavours come alive and dance on your tastebuds, it is a little hard to discern each individual component to this eLiquid, as they all blend into one – something I quite liked, as many eJuices come across as rather fragmented. On the exhale is when you can really appreciate the flavours, especially if you exhale through the nostrils. The fruitiness of this juice is astounding, it really feels like you are

drinking a smoothie.

With a VG of 70% vapour creation is good, whilst still retaining a decent amount of flavour.

All in all, I felt that 'Dignity' was right up my alley taste-wise, and it really delivered when vaping it.

I would definitely try this juice over and over due to its appealing, sweet and fruity nature, for that reason I am giving 'Dignity' a solid 5/5!

and sweet subtlety to it when inhaling.

V-juice is a UK based vape company that produces a huge line of eLiquids for a budget price, without skimping on quality. They have a choice of either 50:50 PG:VG called the Gourmet Range, and they have 20:80 PG:VG called the Cloud Chasing range. On their website, you have the option of 0mg, 3mg or 6mg strength nicotine, when selecting the 'Cloud Chasing' line of juices. Further, you can choose to have a 10ml (£4.49), 30ml (£10.99) or 100ml (£29.99) sized unicorn bottle.

What I like about this particular line of eLiquids is the mild flavouring, it is in no way overpowering, meaning you can vape all day without getting sick of the taste.

There is a great selection of over 100 different flavours ranging from Absinthe to Yumberry- and everything in between! Today, I will be reviewing 3 various flavours from the cloud chasing range. All are in 10ml safety capped bottles, 3mg nicotine and are at 80% VG.

Cookie Monster

Cookie Monster has a rather smooth

If I am honest, it tastes quite plain at first, however, after the first few puffs, I could pick up on a complex flavour that incorporates both the wholesomeness and sweetness of a caramel cookie. On exhalation, the flavour tends to transform, creating a magical experience that is not often seen in many juices. Although I prefer fruity flavours, I really thought that Cookie Monster was a pleasant vape- I especially liked the different aspects of flavour you get whilst inhaling and whilst exhaling.

Hulk Blood

This juice is appropriately bright green in colour, however, its main flavour is pink raspberry candy.

I absolutely love raspberry vapes, and out of the multitude of raspberry juices I have tried during my time as a vaper, Hulk Blood has been one of the best so far. You get a sweet yet sharp blast of freshness upon inhaling and it will make your mouth water due to the sour candy element of this juice.

Hulk Blood is a rather simple set of flavours, no complicated mixtures or different after tastes, just straight up raspberry candy.

I loved this juice so much that I will be ordering more of it soon, as it depleted quite quickly as it is one of my favourites!

Guava Insane

A few months ago, I was given a guava flavoured eJuice from the Philippines and really enjoyed it, however, I soon polished off the bottle and couldn't find any more. So when I discovered 'Guava Insane' I was raring to try it!

This juice is probably the most strong and fruity of the lot that I am writing about today.I was pleased with the juiciness and the fact that it excited my tastebuds when vaping.

On both inhaling and exhaling, you get an intense wave of guava that lingers on the tongue. As with all the juices I tried from this range, vapour production was excellent – to the point I couldn't see what I was writing whilst I was vaping!

In conclusion, all the juices I tried today really tickled my fancy. Flavour-wise they were spot on, the bottles were simply designed and featured safety caps, and the price was not a fortune, for these reasons, I am looking forward to trying

E-Liquid Safety

top ten list for e-liquid

DIY creators

The time has come for you to load up your mod with that delicious e-liquid. As you get ready to vape, have you ever considered making your own e-liquid? You won’t be the first, as a plethora of vapers are now getting their juicy vape on and making their own e-liquids at home. This can be great fun and very satisfying – but you must be careful and always stay safe. It’s all fair and well getting your creative juices flowing as you contemplate cool and classic flavour variations, but safety is paramount and should always be on your mind. Here is a handy list from Decadent Vapours which is a great starter for those of you looking to becoming mixologists extraordinaire.

1. Only use a trusted vendor that uses pharmaceutical grade nicotine, PG and VG (Decadent Vapours’ products are manufactured in a state-of-of-the art ISO lab, ensuring a dust and particle free environment and the most stringent safety procedures).

2. Ensure food grade flavourings are certified free from diacetyl and acetyl propionyl.

3. Protect yourself and loved ones by using nicotine that is of a sensible strength - no more than 7.2% is a good rule of thumb. Note that nicotine 7.5% is illegal to buy without a Poison’s Licence. As long as you stick to this rule, even if you miscalculate your recipe and it is a little too strong, the worst you will face is a strong throat hit.

4. Wear nitrile protective gloves which will protect your skin in case of accidental spillages. If you spill 7.2% nicotine on your skin, your skin will itch and may feel warm. If this happens, simply rinse with cold water and you will be fine.

5. Do not even consider buying pure nicotine for home mixing. It is illegal and could lead to a fatality.

6. Use products that have child safety caps

7. Keep the e-liquids locked in a safe place away from children and pets.

8. Always mix in a clean environment.

9. Immediately wipe away any spillages to avoid contamination or cross pollination; if this wasn’t inside the factory, it would definitely the course of action to take.

10. Last but not least, have fun. You’ll see the fruits of your labour very soon, so all your hard work will be worth it. Enjoy the mixing and your delicious vape!

C IL Porn

A massive industry spanning continents exists around coil-building. Just hop onto Instagram and you’ll see a plethora of stunning coil images. If you type “#CoilPorn” into Instagram, 164,114 posts are brought up. So how did coil-building come to be such a popular pastime and where did it all start? Here is a simple explanation for newbie and seasoned vapers alike. If you take a walk into any vape store, you’ll see a wonderful assortment of hardware. Inside every single vaping device, you have a wick and coil. You can either buy stock coils – or you can explore your creativity, get tinkering and unleash your imagination with coilbuilding. In RDAs (rebuildable dripping atomisers), the coil has to be made and installed. Plenty of people use normal basic wire, yet it is popular to build your own.

There are many reasons why coilbuilding is on the rise. It can be cheaper than buying pre-made coils. There is also a vibrant culture of flavour chasing and cloud chasing, which fosters real community spirit, where likeminded vapers can meet and swap tips and coil-building tricks. The very act of coil-building can also be a blessing for former smokers, who may need to keep their hands busy as they miss the handling of a cigarette. Coil-building actually originated a few years ago after the first RDA entered the market. Their popularity increased as people started to get creative when customising their vape for a heightened vaping experience. Coil-builders make more complex coils for a variety of reasons.

It could be for increased cloud production, a more intense flavour experience, or artistry. It is the fusion of aesthetics and artisan taste that is driving the coil-building phenomena. Here is a selection of images that can only be described as coil-porn at its best.

DON’T BE JAILBAIT!

Here are 7 tips on staying TPD compliant while standing out from the crowd with your e-liquid labelling

The smaller bottles = smaller labels conundrum

The TPD states e-juice cannot be sold in bottles greater than 10ml. If you are concerned about how the increased product information and warnings will fit onto a 5ml or 10ml bottle label, then worry no longer!

A multi-layer label can accommodate the extra information required to comply with the new regulations. Also known as Peel and Reveal or Peel and Read labels they are the perfect solution for tiny plastic or glass e-juice bottles.

The beauty of the Peel and Reveal label is that you can keep the label the same size yet increase the information provided by using extra layers of paper.

Mix it up

Compliance is not necessarily synonymous with boring. You can still be different with your packaging and stay compliant. Using foil, holographic materials, transparent films or semi-gloss vinyl for your labels can really spice up your e-liquid bottles.

Spot varnish or embossing can make your brand and logo stand out on a crowded shelf while specialised inks add extra sparkle and shine.

Worry free dripping

Just one or two splashes of e-juice and the label becomes illegible while compliance goes out of the window. Choose indelible ink to ensure the labels are durable and have the capability to withstand spills and scratches.

Here comes the sun

We all live in hope that the hazy days of summer are just around the corner but

an increase in temperature and humidity can present an extra challenge for your e-juice bottle labels.

A high quality label will possess strong adhesive qualities and be able to survive whatever the holiday season has to offer.

Sheets or rolls?

If you are using an automated filling and packing system having your printed labels on rolls will probably be the most suitable solution.

For those crafting artisan e-liquids or suppliers specialising in limited editions in smaller quantities sheets of labels may be more appropriate for your needs.

Traceability doesn’t have to be tiresome

Ensuring batch numbers and production dates are printed clearly and accurately onto e-juice labels can be tiresome. The quick and simple route to printing variable data is to purchase a small thermal transfer printer and overprint the required information on your existing labels.

Alternatively have your label supplier print the variable data when they print your labels. You simply apply the printed label – job done.

Forget the Bermuda Triangle

Are you concerned about how to comply with ISO/BS11683? The Tactile Warning Triangle label is the answer – guaranteed to make your concerns disappear.

Choose to use rolls of clear tactile warning triangle labels which are applied to your existing labels or have the warning triangles integrated directly into your existing label design when they are printed.

Finally – a happy ending

If you are finding TPD compliance

a stressful and expensive affair, then e-liquid printed label specialist Readability Ltd can provide free advice on labelling.

The company, who are celebrating 23 years in the labelling industry, are also offering a 23% discount off your first order for e-liquid labels. The minimum order is £200 (ex-vat) with a closing date of 30th June 2016.

To place your order or to request a free sample pack of printed labels call Philippa Griffin at Readability on 01440 712 273 and quote the discount code VAPE23. To find out more about Readability visit our website –www.readability.co.uk

FYI
The TPD has finally arrived so it’s time to face up to the harsh reality that non-compliance could earn you a criminal conviction and up to two years in jail.

A-Z OF VAPING

Part Four

Like every niche group, the vaping community has its own set of terms and slang which may be confusing to those new to vaping and totally unintelligible to those outside the community. Here we continue our look at some of the more popular, and not so popular, terms related to vaping and e-cigarettes.

O-ring - These are circular seals which are usually made from silicone, nitrile or other synthetic rubber-like materials. When used in e-cigarettes their function is to provide a good liquid and gas seal, especially in larger or custom models. Almost all drip tips use at least one or two o-rings.

Ohm - This is the standard unit of electrical resistance. A standard atomiser coil in a regular head usually varies from 1.5 to 2 ohms. The higher the resistance for a given voltage, the cooler the vape and the less vapour produced. It follows that lowering the resistance for a given voltage will result in a warmer the vape with more vapour.

Organic Cotton Coils - A coil setup made by Kangertech which with organic than cheaper coils.

Passthrough – This refers to where an e-cigarette plugs directly into the USB port of a computer or charger and allows the user to vape while the battery is being charged.

PCC - This is a Personal Charging Case which is also known as a Portable Charging Case and it allows an e-cigarette battery to be stored in and charged from the PCC battery while away from other power sources.

PEG – Polyethylene Glycol is a less common ingredient which is sometimes found in e-liquid. It is an alternative to the main ingredients in used in making e liquid (PG and VG).

Pen Style (Pictured, left) – A style of electronic cigarettes which resembles a ball point pen.

Propylene Glycol - This is often abbreviated to just PG and is one of the two main ingredients most commonly used in the making of e-cigarette liquids, the other being vegetable glycerin.

PGA – Pure Grain Alcohol which is used in thinning of VG in 100% VG e liquid. It can also be used as a base in a tincture in order to create home-made flavourings for DIY applications.

Pipe Style – An e-cigarette which is shaped to resemble a traditional pipe and which is also known as an e-pipe.

FYI
P O

Protected battery -A battery is said to be protected when it is protected by a computer chip that will break the circuit if the voltage, current or temperature gets two high or too low.

Priming – This is the act of preparing a wick by adding a few drops of e-liquid to it or of taking a few pulls without heating the coil.

Puff – The motion the smoker uses on the e-cig to get a hit.

Pull – Also known as the draw, or hit. What the smoker does to get the hit from the e-cig.

SSensor – That part of the e-cigarette battery that detects when the user has taken a drag.

Silica – This is a material used for building wicks and is generally used to refer to braided silica cord. Silica has a very high melting point, so it can be cleaned with an open flame such as that from a butane torch.

QSmoke Juice – Also referred to as E-Liquid, Liquid, Juice, or E-Juice. This is the liquid that is ized when using an electronic cigarette. Not the most popular or, indeed accurate, of terms as no smoke is produced from an e-cigarette.

Quad Coil - The coil is the heating element of the e-cigarette which is used to turn the e-liquid into vapour. A single device may have more than one coil. If has four coils it is known as a quad coil device. More coils mean more power is required from the battery to heat them so battery life is a consideration when deciding on how many coils to use.

Smokeless Cigarette – A term used to refer to an electronic cigarette. This term is used due to the fact that no actual smoke is inhaled while using an e-cig. However as it seems a little odd to define something in terms of what it does not do, the term e-cigarette is much more widely used.

RStealth Vaping - the art of vaping undetected in a situation where it may not be approved of or allowed. This is the opposite of cloud-chasing.

Rebuildable Atomizer – Rebuildable atomizers vary in design, are very cost effective and are readily fixable. Combined with a generic battery holder body, they are essentially an everlasting device that only needs common parts for occasional maintenance. Some are small and slim in format, others fairly substantial. Some common abbreviations include:

RBA – Rebuildable Atomizer

RDA – Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer

RDTA – Rebuildable Dripping Tank Atomizer and

RTA – Rebuildable Tank Atomizer

Resistance – This is the measurement (in ohms) which allows you to calculate the right amount of voltage to apply to get the best wattage necessary.

Resistance Wire – This a key component in an e-cigarette and is the wire in an atomizer coil which heats up when an electrical current is applied in order to vaporise the e-liquid. It is typically made from Nichrome or Kanthal.

Ribbon Kanthal, Ribbon Wire, Ribbon – A type of resistance “wire” used for building coils. It has a flat cross section rather than the round cross section which is found in traditional wire.

Steeping – This is the process of allowing your e-liquid to sit either open to the air, or in a sealed container. This is generally not necessary in e-liquid that has a high ratio of PG to VG. It is more often necessary in high VG ratio juices.

Stick Style – Any e-cigarette that resembles the style of a traditional cigarette.

Sub-Ohming - The practice of increasing the current from a specific battery to reduce the resistance of the coils to below one ohm to achieve massive vaping clouds.

Syrupy – A very sweet e-liquid can be described as syrupy.

Sweet Spot several variables needed to achieve a satisfying vape. These variables are most commonly; voltage, wattage, resistance, and the flashpoint of the juice.

FYI
That’s it for this edition. Look out for some more vaping terms in the next edition. VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE ISSUE 05 199

With it having now been a year since Perino London launched at Vape Jam UK, we thought this was a great opportunity to give you an insight into where we’ve come from, and where we are going...

Our goal from day one has been to firmly place the spotlight on our home city of London, featuring the flavours that represent this incredible city. Therefore, Perino was founded on three central principles as we seek to showcase the best of London and promote British e-liquid on the international stage One. Utilise only the highest quality ingredients. These ingredients are essential to the flavours of Perino and our reputation for creating premium artisan e-liquids, and with much of them being made in Britain, the affordability and accessibility of our brand.

Two. Our e-liquids must have perfect flavour combinations. From uniquely Perino flavours like Oliver Twist and the award winning East India, to our refining of classic tastes with After Dark and Rhubarb & Custard; our flavour harmonies deliver an individual

experience in every cloud of vapour.

Three. Push the boundaries of blending. All Perino liquids are entirely handcrafted in our class-7 clean room in London, and we utilise speciality blending techniques to ensure flavours are married together perfectly.

We believe the result of these three fundamentals have not only formed the foundation of the success of our handcrafted e-liquids, but also delivered a range of e-liquids with varied taste experiences that are sure to excite and invigorate the senses.

After the success of our classic collection over the past year, we recently unveiled FUTURE 70: THIRTY, a strikingly designed, high VG collection. The launch of FUTURE 70: THIRTY has been incredibly positive with glowing reviews from the likes of Martyn Parker and Vaping with Vic, who we extend a special thanks to! We urge you to discover your FUTURE today...

Finally, we would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last twelve months, from the vaping

community who have made us feel so welcome and inspire us everyday, to the businesses that stock our products who are as passionate about our e-liquids as we are, and finally to all the staff at Perino as without them, our award winning handcrafted e-liquids would not be the success they are today!

We suggest keeping a close eye as there is much, much more to come from Perino London!

Fuu: The e-liquid with a "French Touch"

Fine food, fragrance, scents of all kinds... France has always been home to good taste and style. Based in Paris, the Fuu Manufacture is fully in keeping with that heritage and offers e-liquids based on recipes combining taste and subtlety as only the French know how. Meet the company's two manager-flavourists: Jean and Jean.

Who is Fuu, who are you?

J&J: We are Parisian creators of e-liquids. We launched our first recipes in 2012 and have not stopped innovating and learning ever since. The two of us create the recipes and that implies a way of working that is really motivating. From the very start we felt that vaping would only work if it gives people pleasure and fun. All of our recipes are slightly crazy and original, we hate doing the same as everyone else, which is sometimes risky but we're never ashamed of what we produce!

The French are vape fans, what makes your country so different in e-liquids?

J&J: The French are fans of fine food, fragrance, and good taste in general. They are very demanding and know that too much sugar or too much fat are often used to hide imperfections. Making an e-liquid that pleases French consumers requires a lot of subtlety. Vapers want fine, specific tastes, which

can be enjoyed throughout the day. They are also very attentive to the quality of ingredients and the absence of controversial molecules such as diacetyl in recipes.

Can you tell us more about your way of working?

J&J: We have launched almost 100 recipes in 4 years. From the start we've tried to interest every kind of vaper, whatever their past or preferences. This frantic work takes up most of our time. We launch creative projects based on simple or complex ideas, driven by our passion for fine food. Our projects are not always conclusive but that's what makes the beauty of the approach.

On the other hand, when we've "found something", we're really excited and the

creative marketing process can begin ... What kind of taste can we vape from Fuu?

J&J: Among the recipes of which we are proudest, the "Svapo Spritz" is a favourite. It is a liquid inspired by the Italian cocktail, available in a 30PG / 70VG blend with a highly original all-day profile. It is slightly bitter, which is rare in vapes. The Fuug Life range is also very interesting, with 6 flavors specially developed for subohm vaping. We have carefully removed the aromas which cannot withstand high temperatures, making them very smooth juices to vape. In all of our recipes you'll always find the Fuu signature: neither too much nor too little!

Ryan’s encouraging words and unwavering belief in Brandon’s stunning designs were the first steps toward getting the Ohmega brand off the ground. The entire Ohmega series has undergone rigorous testing. Every single mod, atty and RDA has been put through its paces, with safety at the forefront of the makers’ minds. It is this attention to detail that has led Ohmega to become one of the bestsellers at Vapor World.v

He said: “Vapor World takes pride in helping its employees to create their own lines, be it equipment like Ohmega, or e-liquids. We are always on the lookout for ways to augment the vaping experience for the vaping community. The feedback we’re getting on our Ohmega series is phenomenal. It makes all the hard work worthwhile, especially when taking stock of how the Vapor World brand has progressed.”

Vapor World is a keen promoter of the vaping cause, and vocal supporters of CASAA (Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives) and SFATA (Smoke-free Alternatives Trade Association). Ryan said: “We will be on the Board for the Oklahoma SFATA Chapter and we intend to comply

Ryan, who in a former life was a car dealership owner, has a deep-rooted desire to help others in their vaping journey. After losing grandparents to smoking, Ryan and his wife April used vaping to stop smoking. They started running a store to help people quit smoking; what started out as an altruistic hobby, quickly mushroomed into a fully fledged brick and mortar business in 2012. Ryan was head of buying and thought it made commercial sense to turn Vapor World into a wholesale distributor for e-cigarettes.
