N e w s Editor T h e De Witt C u l t u r a l C e n t e r , besides providing a gathering p l a c e f o r s t u d e n t s , will h e l p to relieve the p r e s e n t c r o w d e d c o n d i t i o n s in c l a s s r o o m s a n d f a c u l t y a n d s t u d e n t o r g a n i z a t i o n offices.

T h e new t h e a t r e itself will h a v e a c a p a c i t y of 5 6 5 in c o m p a r i s o n with the p r e s e n t c a p a c i t y of a b o u t 120. In a d d i t i o n , the p l a n s c o n t a i n p r o v i s i o n f o r two d r e s s i n g r o o m s , a reception r o o m , a property a n d scenery storage r o o m , a property construction room, one small and o n e l a r g e r e h e a r s a l r o o m , a costume room and a costume l a u n d r y r o o m . Rev. R e a d h a s b e e n the m i n i s ter of the M a d i s o n A v e n u e C h u r c h since 1 9 5 6 . He w a s b o r n a n d educ a t e d in S c o t l a n d . He s e r v e d a s the first c h a p l a i n to t h e U n i v e r s i t y of E d i n b u r g h f r o m 1 9 4 9 until 1955.

T h e a u t h o r of n u m e r o u s p u b l i c a t i o n s , Rev. H e a d ' s m o s t recent b o o k is entitled " V i r g i n i a Woolf Meets C h a r l i e B r o w n . " DR, ZUIDEMA graduated s u m m a cum laude from Hope C o l l e g e in 1 9 4 9 .

He h a s b e e n d i r e c t o r of the dep a r t m e n t of s u r g e r y at t h e J o h n s Hopkins University and surgeonin-chief at t h e J o h n s H o p k i n s H o s pital since 1 9 6 4 . He a l s o s e r v e s as a consultant for several hospitals, including W a l t e r Reed A r m y General Hospital.

He h a s b e e n a c t i v e o n the N a t i o n a l A e r o n a u t i c s a n d S p a c e Adm i n i s t r a t i o n ' s science a n d techn o l o g y a d v i s o r y committee for m a n n e d s p a c e flights since 1965.

By Ron Hook Student B o d y President In m y r e m a r k s I'll b e s p e a k i n g a b o u t a n e l e m e n t of t h e c a m p u s w h i c h , in a i l l i k e l i h o o d , is n o t h e r e . But it is a n e l e m e n t t h a t m u s t be dealt with.

I N T H E P A S T few y e a r s f r u s t r a t i o n a n d a n x i e t y h a v e been on the increase o n o u r c a m p u s . T h e expression " H o p e College s u c k s " is n o l o n g e r l i m i t e d t o the i n s i d e of the J o h n d o o r , b u t is u s e d r a t h e r f r e q u e n t l y on the o c c a s f o n of a n a c a d e m i c o r s o c i a l s e t b a c k .

It h a s b e c o m e a r e s p o n s e t o a general uneasiness which seems unexplainable.

Recent r e s e a r c h i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h e r o o t s of t h i s a n x i e t y m i g h t lie in w h a t is c a l l e d t h e " f r e s h man trauma"—being suddenly t h r o w n i n t o a r a d i c a l l y n e w set of circumstances—away from home.

They also claim that a n o t h e r c a u s e c o u l d b e in t h e f a c t t h a t t h e l i b e r a l a r t s c o l l e g e is forced to b e c o m e m o r e and m o r e preprofessional and, consequently, i m p e r s o n a l .

O T H E R C O N T R I B U T O R S to o u r u n d e r c u r r e n t of f r u s t r a t i o n i n c l u d e o u r a n n o y a n c e with t h e c h r o n i c d i s o r d e r of i n t e r n a t i o n a l s o c i e t y , the s u b s e q u e n t d i s t r u s t of p r e s e n t i n s t i t u t i o n s f o r c a u s i n g this d i s o r d e r , a n d e v e n d i s t r u s t of o u r s e l v e s a s h u m a n s w h o m u s t ask ourselves questions a b o u t a very uncertain future.

T h e point 1 a m t r y i n g to m a k e n o w , is thic: o u r d i s i l l u s i o n m e n t , our insecurity, o u r s u b c o n s c i o u s f r u s t r a t i o n d o e s not n e c e s s a r i l y h a v e its s o u r c e at H o p e C o l l e g e .

These a r e not just the p r o b l e m s of t h e 2 1 ()()() s t u d e n t s here, b u t they are p r o b l e m s which p e r v a d e

o u r generation. So, an emotive r e s p o n s e l i k e the o n e I m e n t i o n e d e a r l i e r is n o t e n t i r e l y v a l i d .

NO O N E WOULD deny that we h a v e p r o b l e m s p a r t i c u l a r to this place, but to d e a l with t h e m in s u c h a c r a s s , i m m a t u r e f a s h i o n is j u s t u n a c c e p t a b l e f o r p e r s o n s of o u r i n t e l l i g e n c e .

We a r e a t a n i n s t i t u t i o n w h e r e a r e f i n e d , r e a s o n i n g a b i l i t y is o u r g o a l , a n d it s e e m s t o m e t h a t it w o u l d n ' t b e o u t of p l a c e t o r a tionally investigate paths tobetter l i v i n g h e r e . We s a y o u r p r o b l e m s a r e p r i m a r i l y a c a d e m i c a n d soc i a l ? Well, t h e r e a r e o p p o r t u n i ties a v a i l a b l e f o r p r a c t i c a l l y a n y o n e w h o desires to d o s o m e t h i n g a b o u t it. P o s i t i o n s o n s t u d e n t faculty c o m m i t t e e s a r e not a s exclusive a s they once were, a n d they're waiting for s o m e active, o r g a n i z e d p e r s o n s t o fill t h e m .

If t h a t is n o t a t t r a c t i v e , t h e r e a r e several other c a m p u s organizat i o n s w h i c h c a n c o n t r i b u t e effectively to the social a n d a c a d e m i c scene.

IT J U S T M A K E S m o r e sense t o m e t o b e a c t i v e l y i n v o l v e d in c o r r e c t i n g p r o b l e m s t h a n t o sit b a c k in y o u r r o o m h o w l i n g v u l g a r i t i e s a t s o m e e n t i t y in the s k y called H o p e College.

T h e i n s t i t u t i o n is w h a t y o u m a k e i t — a n d let t h e r e b e n o m i s t a k e , y o u c a n m a k e i t — a s well a s b r e a k it.

S t u d e n t s here, a n d a n y w h e r e , h a v e m o r e power to c h a n g e t h i n g s t h a n t h e y ' d like t o b e l i e v e . T h e y h a v e p o w e r in n u m b e r s ; t h e y h a v e financial power. T h e y h a v e the p o w e r of p r o t e s t — a n d t h e c o r r e s p o n d i n g bad publicity.

"Apathy's Finest' Perhaps it's t h e i v o r y - t o w e r , w o r l d of t h e s m a l l c h u r c h - r e l a t e d liberal a r t s college o r the conserv a t i s m of the R e f o r m e d C h u r c h or m a y b e H o l l a n d h a s just r u b b e d off. W h a t e v e r it is t h a t m a k e s H o p e students content to a b i d e b y the myriad discriminatory, arbitrary a n d out-dated rules, policies a n d regulations which g o v e r n the Hope Community, congratulat i o n s a r e in o r d e r f o r a j o b well done.

N o less a p a t h e t i c t h a n their u n concerned progenitors a n d just as narrow-minded and hypocritical, they promise only m a i n t e n a n c e of the s t a t u s q u o .

A few s t u d e n t s a r e b e c o m i n g a w a r e t h a t t h e y d o h a v e p o w e r if o n l y t h e y a r e w i l l i n g t o u s e it, t h a t a little a c t i o n a d d e d t o all t h e t a l k r e a l l y d o e s get r e s u l t s , that students can h a v e a voice in t h e d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g p r o c e s s e s if t h e y w a n t it. Attorney General Talks Off-Campus Study Lures Many About 'Law and Order'

Interest in i n d e p e n d e n t t r a v e l h a s a l s o risen, a c c o r d i n g to Dr. F r i e d . T h e c o n s c i o u s r e a s o n for independent travel given b y m o s t s t u d e n t s is their d e s i r e to see h o w o t h e r p e o p l e live. Dr. F r i e d s t a t e d t h a t the u n c o n s c i o u s r e a s o n w a s p e r h a p s the d e s i r e to get a w a y f r o m the h u m d r u m of c a m p u s study.

H o p e s t u d e n t s c a n be f o u n d s t u d y i n g this s e m e s t e r in s u c h places as Beirut, L e b a n o n , Bogota, Colombia and Grenoble, France.

There h a s b e e n a d e c i d e d inc r e a s e in t h e interest in o f f - c a m p u s s t u d y , n o t n e c e s s a r i l y in t h e n u m b e r of s t u d e n t s , b u t in t h e v a r i e t y of a r e a s w h e r e t h e y s t u d y , a c c o r d i n g to Dr. P a u l F r i e d , Dir e c t o r of I n t e r n a t i o n a l E d u c a t i o n .

Many students show a strong d e s i r e to s t u d y in c o u n t r i e s t h e y k n o w little o r n o t h i n g a b o u t , r a t h e r t h a n in c o u n t r i e s with w h i c h they are very familiar from l a n g u a g e and history courses, s a i d Dr. F r i e d . He a d d e d t h a t t h i s s e e m e d to point to the f a c t t h a t s t u d e n t s " g l o r y in i n n o c e n c e a n d i g n o r a n c e " a n d find t h e f a m i l i a r c o u n t r i e s not a s exciting. " I f y o u h a v e h a d a lot of preparation y o u benefit intellectually a n d academically, but n o t e m o t i o n a l l y — t h e r e is n o s e n s e of d e v e l o p m e n t , " he c o m mented.

O N E O F T H E r e a s o n s for the w i d e v a r i e t y of i n t e r e s t s , s a i d Dr. F r i e d , is r e l a t e d to the g e n e r a l student unrest a n d b o r e d o m on c a m p u s . T h e i d e a t o d a y , he s a i d , s e e m s to b e t o d o s o m e t h i n g t h a t is d i f f e r e n t , s o m e t h i n g t h a t i s c h a l lenging. T h e interest in the P h i l a d e l p h i a p r o g r a m s t e m s f r o m the i n c r e a s e d s o c i a l r e s p o n s i b i l i t y t h a t the student feels t o d a y , s a i d Dr. F r i e d . " Dr. F r i e d m e n t i o n e d the imp o r t a n c e of d e c i d i n g w h a t t y p e of e n v i r o n m e n t a student wants to be in w h e n d e c i d i n g w h e r e to t r a v e l . T h e s t r e s s in Y u g o s l a v i a is on the i m p o r t a n c e of e c o n o m i c s in the p o l i t i c s of a c o u n t r y , w h e r e as Vienna stresses the i m p o r t a n c e of m u s i c a n d leisure. B o g o t a is c o n c e r n e d with politics r a t h e r t h a n e c o n o m i c s a n d G e r m a n y with history. The student should decide w h a t p l a c e w o u l d d o the m o s t f o r his interests a n d p e r s o n a l i t y .

FRATERNITY members, both actives a n d pledges, a r e reluctant to d i s c u s s p l e d g i n g activities s i n c e t h e y a r e a w a r e t h a t m a n y of t h e i r f r a t e r n i t y ' s a c t i o n s a r e illegal a n d t h e o r e t i c a l l y c o u l d be h e a v i l y p u n ished u n d e r theestablished regulat i o n s of the C o l l e g e a n d the InterFraternity Council.

T h e recent h i s t o r y of H o p e C o l lege s h o w s t h a t e x c e s s e s of p l e d g ing h a v e i n t e r m i t t e n t l y b e e n a s u b ject of p u b l i c c o n c e r n o n c a m p u s .

The spring pledging in 1964 w a s c a n c e l l e d b y the 1 F C b e c a u s e of " g r o s s i n d i g n i t i e s " to i n d i v i d u a l pledges. T w o y e a r s a g o t h e S t u d e n t Life C o m m i t t e e c a r e f u l l y d e f i n e d the r e g u l a t i o n s c o n c e r n i n g informal initiation.

UNDER THOSE regulations, fraternities are prohibited from engaging in "harassment of pledges including such activities a s c a l i s t h e n i c s , rides, p a d d l i n g , burlap, wearing u n d e r w e a r or less, i n d u c e m e n t of n a u s e a a n d p a i n t i n g of p l e d g e s . " All H o p e f r a t e r n i t i e s i n c l u d e s o m e o r all of these t y p e s of " h a r a s s m e n t " in t h e i r n o r m a l p l e d g i n g activities. All, t h e r e f o r e , r e g u l a r l y a n d intentionally risk a u t o m a t i c p u n i s h m e n t s , the lightest of w h i c h r e q u i r e s the f r a t e r n i t y to forfeit its s p r i n g i n f o r m a l .

N o w the best s o l u t i o n is to put u p a little s i g n o v e r at Phelps near the cafeteria line a n d h o p e s o m e o n e will see it a n d b u y y o u r u s e d b o o k s . It c o u l d be v e r y profitable for a n y fraternity or s o r o r i t y to set u p a used b o o k store in the f o l l o w i n g w a y : First, the faculty must c o o p e r a t e b y m a k i n g a list of what b o o k s will be needed for the next semester.

Second, students that w i s h to sell b o o k s w o u l d bring them to the used b o o k s t o r e a n d fill out a s m a l l three-part f o r m with

their n a m e , a d d r e s s a n d h o w much they w a n t for the b o o k . T h e f o r m w o u l d then be s e p a r a t e d a n d o n e portion of it w o u l d g o i n t o the b o o k , o n e to the student a n d the third to a file in the store. The b o o k w o u l d then b e r e a d y t o sell.

A student w h o is l o o k i n g for b o o k s w o u l d then l o o k o n the list a n d find out w h a t he needed. He w o u l d then g o a n d pick out the b o o k he w a n t e d off the shelf a n d p a y the listed price. T h i s m o n e y m i n u s five to ten percent w o u l d be sent t a the student w h o is s e l l i n g the b o o k . BRANDONS book, however, has obtained a certain n o t o r i e t y in this c o u n t r y , not bec a u s e it a t t e m p t s w h a t I h a v e d e s c r i b e d , n o r b e c a u s e it is a s c h o l a r l y w o r k , but b e c a u s e it a l l e g e d l y ties the life a n d c a r e e r of J e s u s in closely with the w o r k of the J e w i s h r e l i g i o u s — n a t i o n a l ist p o l i t i c a l r e v o l u t i o n a r i e s ( " Z e a l o t s " ) of his d a y .

Let us a s s u m e t h a t this alleg a t i o n is s o u n d , a s I t h i n k it is.

Does this m a k e B r a n d o n ' s b o o k in a n y s e n s e a s h o c k e r ? O n l y if B r a n d o n proves that Jesus was

himself a Z e a l o t , bent on fomenting r e v o l u t i o n a g a i n s t Rome, a Z e a l o t w h o tried, failed, a n d w a s executed b y the foreign g o v e r n ment in o c c u p a t i o n of Palestine.

WE T H U S ASK: Does B r a n d o n prove that Jesus w a s a Zealot? We c a n b e n o f a i r e r t h a n to let B r a n d o n s p e a k f o r h i m s e l f : " S u f f i c e it to n o t e that, a s a c o n n e c t i o n existed between t h e Z e a lots a n d the s e c t a r i e s of Q u m r a n , s o a b o n d of c o m m o n s y m p a t h y s u r e l y u n i t e d J e s u s a n d his foll o w e r s with t h o s e w h o s o u g h t to m a i n t a i n the i d e a l s of J u d a s of G a l i l e e ( a Z e a l o t l e a d e r ) . (p. 3 5 8 ) On the b a s i s of this s t a t e m e n t , w h i c h one r e a d s o n l y a f t e r g o i n g through 357 p r i o r p a g e s of mingled scholarship a n d subterf u g e , we c o n c l u d e not o n l y t h a t Brandon d o e s not p r o v e t h a t J e s u s w a s a Z e a l o t , b u t t h a t he is n o t t r y i n g to offer s u c h p r o o f .

W h a t , then, is the b o o k a b o u t ?

Prof. B r a n d o n w o u l d like t o believe t h a t J e s u s ' s e l f - d e d i c a t i o n to r e v o l u t i o n a r y s o c i a l a n d political ideals of f r e e d o m a n d s e r v i c e to G o d a l o n e , a s seen in the Z e a -

lots, w a s a bit t o o s c a n d a l o u s f o r even the G o s p e l w r i t e r s themselves to a c k n o w l e d g e . A n d , t o be s u r e , a g r e a t m a n y N e w Testam e n t s c h o l a r s b e s i d e s Prof. B r a n d o n h a v e f o r l o n g m a i n t a i n e d that the N e w T e s t a m e n t is g e n e r a l l y at p a i n s to a v o i d g i v i n g the imp r e s s i o n t h a t the e a r l y C h r i s t i a n m o v e m e n t w a s a s e d i t i o u s plot a g a i n s t the p o w e r of R o m e .

But w h e r e Prof. B r a n d o n fouls f o r l a c k of a r g u m e n t a n d evid e n c e is in his i n s i n u a t i o n s that the e a r l y C h r i s t i a n s t o o k the neut r a l a p p r o a c h t o w a r d R o m a n political realities, n o t b e c a u s e J e s u s h a d said " m y k i n g d o m is n o t of this w o r l d , " b u t b e c a u s e he h a d b e e n i n v o l v e d with political revol u t i o n a r i e s , put to d e a t h f o r his seditious attempts. This involves B r a n d o n in the s u b t e r f u g e aforem e n t i o n e d . Let m e s u b s t a n t i a t e m y c h a r g e b y o f f e r i n g the foll o w i n g k e y section f r o m " J e s u s a n d the Z e a l o t s : " "JESUS MUST HAVE known of the Z e a l o t ideal, a n d of Z e a l o t exploits and m a r t y r d o m , from b o y h o o d . B e c a u s e he w a s a Jew, n u r t u r e d in the t r a d i t i o n s of his p e o p l e a n d b e l i e v i n g in the a b s o lute s o v e r e i g n t y of G o d , b o t h his r e l i g i o u s instincts a n d his sense of p a t r i o t i s m m u s t h a v e b e e n aff r o n t e d b y the p r e s e n c e of the heathen Romans, who dominated his people b y f o r c e of a r m s a n d d e m a n d e d t r i b u t e to s u p p o r t their u n g o d l y rule. In t h e y e a r s since the S u p r e m e C o u r t d e c l a r e d in 1 9 5 4 in " B r o w n v s . B o a r d of E d u c a t i o n " t h a t " s e p a r a t e but e q u a l " s c h o o l s were u n c o n s t i t u t i o n a l , there h a v e been s u b s t a n t i a l c h a n g e s in t h e p o s i t i o n of b l a c k s a n d in the. s t r u c t u r e of black-white relations. Indeed, so g r e a t h a v e been these c h a n g e s that m a n y observers have characterized w h a t h a s h a p p e n e d a n d w h a t c o n t i n u e s to h a p p e n in this d a y a n d a g e a s the " B l a c k R e v o lution."

A S E R I E S OF c a s e s p r e c e d e d t h e 1 9 5 4 d e c i s i o n , b e g i n n i n g with a 1938 decision which required t h e U n i v e r s i t y of M i s s o u r i L a w S c h o o l to a d m i t a q u a l i f i e d b l a c k a p p l i c a n t . M a n y o t h e r e v e n t s , it c a n be a r g u e d , w e r e of e q u a l a n d p e r h a p s even greater importance.

T h e i m p o r t a n c e of t h e B r o w n c a s e l a y in t h e fact t h a t it a p p l i e d to s c h o o l s at all levels, a n d n o t m e r e l y to p r o f e s s i o n a l o r g r a d u a t e s c h o o l s . It w a s , t h e r e f o r e , evident t o b o t h w h i t e s a n d b l a c k s a l i k e t h a t it s i g n a l e d a m a s s i v e c h a n g e , a s well a s p r o v i d i n g a l e g a l b a s i s f o r a c h a l l e n g e to the e n t i r e f a b r i c of b l a c k - w h i t e r e l a tions.

Kennedy, as a Presidential candid a t e , c a l l e d the sit-in m o v e m e n t a s i g n t h a t " t h e A m e r i c a n s p i r i t is c o m i n g alive a g a i n . " O U T O F T H E sit-in m o v e m e n t c a m e t h e r i s e of a c t i v i s m . Sit-ins embarrassed merchants,corporations, public officials, religious denominations and educational i n s t i t u t i o n s b y t h e i r insistent dem a n d s f o r e q u a l r i g h t s . N o t all of the p r o t e s t s w e r e w e l l - o r g a n i z e d or well founded, but activism proved to be a powerful m e t h o d t o d r a m a t i z e a n issue, m o b i l i z e p u b l i c s u p p o r t , a n d p r e s s resisting g r o u p s to a c c e p t a n e q u a l rights solution.

T h e r e is d e b a t e o v e r t h e s p e e d with w h i c h the B l a c k R e v o l u t i o n is t a k i n g p l a c e . It is, h o w e v e r , for blacks, m u c h too slow; for m a n y w h i t e s , m u c h t o o fast. In s o m e r e s p e c t s the p o s i t i o n of the black m a n has improved. There c a n be little d o u b t a b o u t this.

But it is e q u a l l y t r u e t h a t t h e b l a c k s in A m e r i c a n s o c i e t y still remain substantially disadvanta g e d in o c c u p a t i o n s , i n c o m e a n d education.

F O R T H E B U L K of t h e b l a c k p o p u l a t i o n , the improvements that h a v e occurred h a v e only a w a k e n e d the d e s i r e f o r f u r t h e r progress. What once m a y h a v e s e e m e d d i s t a n t a n d o u t of r e a c h n o w a p p e a r s p o s s i b l e with t r a ditional restraints no longer being t o l e r a t e d o r a c c e p t e d . Whites, it is t r u e , still c o n t r o l t h e m a j o r i n s t i t u t i o n s of A m e r i c a n s o c i e t y ; t h e y c a n yield, resist, t e m p o r i z e ; t h e y c a n accept o r initiate s o m e c h a n g e s a n d reject o t h e r s .

A s a s l a v e , a s a free m a n , a s a citizen, a n d a s a p o w e r f u l m a n , t h e b l a c k h a s c o n t r i b u t e d his j u s t s h a r e to the n a t i o n ' s d e v e l o p m e n t .

T h e r e f o r e , if A m e r i c a d e n i e s h i m h i s f u t u r e , the b l a c k m a n h a s t h e r i g h t t o r a i s e hell, e v e n a s f a r a s d e n y i n g A m e r i c a h e r m o s t beloved future.
