Although musical, E a r l e Spicer's p r o g r a m s h a v e a m o r e g e n e r a l educ a t i o n a l v a l u e t h a n t h e u s u a l vocal concert. English students, studying Shakespeare, Ballads and Creat i v e W r i t i n g , find his s o n g s a n d interpretations extremely interesting". On s o m e o c c a s i o n s he even g i v e s a S h a k e s p e a r e " q u i z , " which is n o t only good e n t e r t a i n m e n t b u t a real t e s t a s well. Very appropriately, E a r l e Spicer w a s born in a locality m a d e f a m o u s in a b a l l a d ; h e is a n a t i v e of A c a d i a , t h e land of L o n g f e l l o w ' s c e l e b r a t e d " E v a n g e l i n e . " As a y o u n g lad he s a n g in t h e c h u r c h c h o i r , and c o n t i n u e d h i s m u s i c a l w o r k a t colleges, w h e r e h e s t u d i e d voice, p i a n o a n d o r g a n . H e also s a n g in t h e glee club a n d t h e college q u a r t e t t e , and played the bass viol in t h e o r c h e s t r a . A f t e r college h e s t u d i e d in L o n d o n a n d N e w York. Guest Artist In England Mr. S p i c e r h a s a p p e a r e d a s a g"uest a r t i s t w i t h l e a d i n g s y m p h o n y o r c h e s t r a s and o r a t o r i o societies in the United States and England. H e h a s s u n g f o r t h e E n g l i s h nob i l i t y a n d t h e g o v e r n o r - g e n e r a l of C a n a d a , a n d h a s p r e s e n t e d a recital at the White House. F o r t h r e e y e a r s he w a s f e a t u r e d soloist on a p o p u l a r N B C r a d i o p r o g r a m with Donald Voorhees and his orchestra. The popular vocalist annually s p e n d s m u c h of h i s t i m e p r e s e n t ing" c o n c e r t s b e f o r e c o l l e g e s a n d universities. A m o n g his m a n y app e a r a n c e s a r e t h o s e m a d e a t Cornell, C o l u m b i a , Yale, P u r d u e a n d P e n n S t a t e . Editorials What Place The Fine Arts? W h a t c o n s t i t u t e s the n a t u r e of "liberal a r t s " education is o f t e n a s provocative of d i s p u t e as t h e classic conflict over its r e l a t i v e efficacy or utility. P r e s u m a b l y t h e liberal a r t s education, if it h a s not been misconceived, provides for complete and a b s o l u t e f r e e d o m of c u r r i c u l a r and e x t r a - c u r r i c u l a r e m p h a s i s , but recognizing" t h e a b u s e to which t h i s f r e e d o m h a s been subjected, it now insists upon t h e p r o v e r b i a l "wellr o u n d e d " p r o g r a m of p a r t i c i p a t i o n . Ideally t h e well-rounded p r o g r a m is v o l u n t a r i l y s o u g h t out; a c t u a l l y it depends f o r its survival on specific c u r r i c u l a r d e m a n d s , s u c h a s e i g h t h o u r s f r o m t h e sciences, six of social studies, and so on. Thus, a p a r a d o x r e s u l t s : " Y o u m a y choose f r e e l y , but to insure y o u r wisdom w e compel you to choose t h u s l y . " P a r a d o x does not p r e s u p p o s e misconception, nor does it preclude reconciliation. T h e opinion of one active c a m p u s p r o p o n e n t of liberal a r t s education is a concession t o expediency. Newman f r o m Ohio State University was the speaker and he told us of some research which had been done at Ohio S t a t e on cyclic urethanes. This type of organic compound undergoes peculiar reactions and their structure and mode of reaction w a s studied in detail. On April 12 Dr. B. H. Velzen of the Hekman Biscuit Company of Grand Rapids will lecture to the Chemistry Club on the subject of poison g a s e s . He has had a very intere s t i n g p a s t having been born and educated in the Dutch E a s t Indies. He served in the Dutch N a v y until a f t e r the w a r and since then he has been active in the peace n e g o t i a tions b e t w e e n the N e t h e r l a n d s and Indonesia. A s a r e s u l t of t h e s e neg o t i a t i o n s t h e United S t a t e s of Indonesia w a s set up comprised of t h e s e v a r i o u s republics, but one republic, T h e Republic of Indonesia, has t a k e n over by f o r c e the much s m a l l e r Republic of t h e South Moluccas. M r . Nikijuluw spent several d a y s last week in t h i s p a r t of the c o u n t r y to gain t h e s y m p a t h y of t h e A m e r i c a n people in his count r y ' s fight for independence. On the walls were welcomes in v a r i o u s l a n g u a g e s and the costumes of the p r o g r a m p a r ticipants added to the festive a t mosphere. Travel f o l d e r s a t each place, compliments of the J a m e s W a g e n a a r Travel Bureau, G r a n d Rapids, contained t h e menu and p r o g r a m . The menu, written in various f o r e i g n l a n g u a g e s aroused the curiosity of the guests, who, upon being served, f o u n d it to be a very t a s t y dinner of breaded veal cutlets, consomme, Brazilian salad, broccoli, Vienna bread, c o t t a g e cheese, shamrock ice cream with added F r e n c h touch of apples and cheese. The dining* room was kept d a r k , except f o r the candles on the tables and the c h a n g i n g colored lights on t h e fireplace. Following a welcome address by Connie Shilling, the g u e s t s witnessed a foreign t o u r by A m y Silcox and Ken K a m m e r a a d . The t r a v e l o g u e included customs and holidays in Spain, China, F r a n c e , and G e r m a n y , p o r t r a y e d by foreign s t u d e n t s on the c a m p u s . I n t e r n a tional Relations Club, and memb e r s of t h e various l a n g u a g e clubs. At t h e close of the tour, the two t o u r i s t s were r e p r e s e n t e d in A m e r ica with their f r i e n d s on T h a n k s giving day. In closing" everyone s a n g "Blest Be the Tie."
