The West Surrey Natural History Society (WSNHS) holds monthly talks by well-known naturalists from September to April on a wide variety of natural history subjects. The talks are held at Ripley Village Hall at 8pm on the fourth Thursday in the month. All meetings are free to members or £3 for non-members (unless otherwise stated). On Thursday 17th December, the talk is ‘Close Encounters with Tigers’, an illustrated talk by Janet Buck who is very interested in wildlife and travel. In this talk Janet will show her photographs of tigers in the Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh, South India. Sloth Bears seen were in another area called Satpura National Park still in Madhya Pradesh. The talk will be followed by festive mulled wine and mince pies! Members £3, Non-members £5 Carols for Clandon Park at Holy Trinity Church, on Friday 18th December from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Despite the devastating fire at Clandon Park in April, one of Clandon Park’s most popular events of the year will still go ahead, now in the beautiful setting of Holy Trinity Church. Featuring readings by actress Penelope Keith, join the brilliant Oxford Singers for their 30th year performing in support of Clandon Park. All proceeds will go to the Clandon Park appeal. Ochre Print Studios have been invited by Woking Borough Council to produce two original screen print editions to commemorate the 150 year anniversary of the birth of novelist HG Wells. A competition to choose the most inspired designs has been launched by Ochre, and selected entries and the winning prints will be displayed in an exhibition at The Lightbox, Woking, from Saturday 26th March to Sunday 1st May. In response to the 150 year anniversary of Wells’ birth, Ochre Print Studios is inviting artists to submit a design, using no more than 5 colours, to be screen printed in an edition of 50 prints. The two winning designs will reflect the themes of War of the Worlds. Wells lived at ‘Lynton’, Maybury Road, Woking, where a blue plaque marks his residence. Deadline for submissions is Friday 18th December. Two designs will be selected by a panel of judges. Each winning artist will receive a fee of £500 and the opportunity to learn to screen print at Ochre, Surrey’s largest open access screen printing facility.
