_HOW WE BEGAN
In 1844, industrialized London was a place of great turmoil and despair. For the young men who migrated to the city from rural areas to find jobs, London offered them a bleak landscape of tenement housing and dangerous influences. A revolutionary man, George Williams, a farmerturned-department store worker, was troubled by what he saw. He established the first Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), a refuge of Bible study and prayer for young men seeking escape from the hazards of life on the streets of London. Although an association of young men meeting around a common purpose was nothing new, what YMCA offered was something unique for its time. The organization’s drive to meet social need in the community was compelling, and its openness to members crossed the rigid lines separating English social classes. Years later, retired Boston sea captain Thomas Valentine Sullivan, working as a marine missionary, noticed a similar need to create a safe “home away from home” for sailors and merchants. Inspired by the stories of the YMCA in England, he led the formation of the first U.S. YMCA at the Old South Church in Boston in year 1851.

THE EARLY YEARS Y E A R :
18 44 George Williams concerned about the lack of healthy activities for young men in major cities during the Industrial Revolution. He initially established the first YMCA in London to focused on Bible study and religious activities. The YMCA was something very unique for its time.

Later, Thomas Valentine Sullivan, retired marine missionary noticed a similar need to create a safe place for sailors and merchants. He formed the first YMCA in the United States.
YMCA housing began to give young men who move to cities from rural areas a safe, clean and affordable accommodation. The facilities in the housing included gyms, auditoriums and hotel-like rooms.

A new game was invented by blending the elements of basketball, tennis and handball together. This game was called mintonette at first and later called “volleyball”.
Offering religious, recreational and relief work to soldiers, prisoners of war, and refugees. In recognition of the YMCA’s effort with war refugees, Mott (the leader of the YMCA at that time) was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace in 1946.

To encourage the healthy development of youth, YMCAs conducted the first national Healthy Kids Day in 1992, the nation’s largest health day for kids and families. Free and open to the public, it became an annual April event, designed to emphasize the importance of play in keeping kids healthy and happy and enhancing their problemsolving abilities, creativity, and motor and social skills.
At the beginning of the 21st century, there are about 2,400 YMCAs served roughly 10,000 communities across the nation with more focused on inspiring youths and their families to exercise and be healthy.

The mark comprises the main symbolic elements that existed in the old YMCA mark; the triangle and the Y letter are kept to symbolize the new approach while maintaining the original essence of the identity. By having inner triangular unity separated by the Y shape, each part represents 3 units that sit within the same entity. Each unit of the triangle represents a new division of the YMCA: The Division of Physicality, Division of Psychology and Division of Intelligence. The new elements form a whole new meaning; which is change. The custom typeface is engineered to perfect the angles of the rounded triangle and the stencillike treatment is designed to react to the negative space within the triangle itself.
