WHAT IS DIGITAL ART?

Placed under the larger category of new media art, digital art is defined as any creative practice that uses digital technology as an essential part of the artistic process. Just like traditional fine art, digital art offers multiple mediums and styles that artists can use to express themselves, from digital photography, computer graphics and pixel art to more experimental mediums such as AI-generated art and AR art, everything goes in the spectrum of digital art.

Involving techniques

that are not distinctive of creative expression only, digital art is ever-evolving and radical in the way it is produced, distributed, and viewed. But not only does digital art employ different electronic technologies, it also results in a digital final product, be it a vector image, an Adobe Photoshop collage, a virtual environment, or an NFT, just to mention a few. As digital technology has become inextricably intertwined with everyday existence and continues to advance, new artistic avenues open up and the artist’s toolbox is today wider than ever.

A Breif History on Digital Art!

Although the first digital art experiences date back to the 1980s, its roots can be traced back to the 1960s with artists such as Frieder Nake, the group EAT (Experiments in Art and Technology), and Allan Kaprow exploring the relationship of man and machine in the artistic realm and, especially the latter, envisioning a world of unbounded communication and interconnectedness. Similarly, in the 1970s pioneering video artist Nam June Paik envisioned a future of boundaryless communication and coined the iconic expression “electronic superhighway.” It was in the early 1980s, however, that an artist Harald Cohen with a group of engineerings invented a paint program named AARON: a robotic machine designed to make large drawings on the sheet of paper placed on the floor. Initially, the machine was creating abstract drawings, then those turned more representational over time and the machine was able to imitate shapes from nature. In the ’90s, AARON also started to implement color to the draw -

ings. Even though Cohen was always very careful not to claim AARON’s creativity but rather his own, considering the machine just as a tool for his own expression, his program is now considered as a harbinger of what we know today as Artificial Intelligence.

In the 1990s, with the introduction of the personal computer, the improvements in digital technology, and the emergence of the internet, not only did these developments provide artists with further creative freedom but also offered new ways to experience art with a growing interest in the interactive nature of their creative output.

1- Frieder Nake: He was a very famous artist and mathematician by profession. After the invention of computers in the 1960s, he combined his mathematical and artistic skills to create art, which was captivating. He made the first-ever attempts to create digital art and benefitted from the connection between a man and a computer.

2- Leon Harmon and Kenneth .C. Knowlton: Kenneth worked at a research and scientific development company in the 1960s. He, alongside his colleague, started experiments with photo mosaics and created big images from tiny prints.

3- Allan Kaprow: Allan made significant discoveries while using the principles of telecommunication. In 1969 she made the famous artwork ‘tele-happening.’ Her work is vital as it is based on principles that are an integral part of today’s society.

A Modem Was Developed

With modem development in 1979, signals were transmitted through telephone lines enabling the use of the internet. With the help of internet discovery, artists have now made various masterpieces of digital artwork.

When Was The Term Digital

Art Was Used For The First Time?

For the very first time, the term digital art was used in the 1980s. Engineers developed a program called AARON, which helped a robot draw large paintings on sheets of paper placed on the floor. With the gradual advancements in technology, digital art became computer generated and was drawn with the help of a computer and a mouse. In the

1990s, the videos were downloaded, and the manipulation of the images became possible.

The Era of Paint Program

From 1980 to 1990, the focus was on using paint programs with scanners and computing programs working together. From 1990 to 2006, the multimedia era began. Artists were able to interact with their audience.

Recognized Digital Artists

In 1992, Mona Hatoum published remarkable artwork. Rachel Whiteread became a

well-recognized digital artist in 1993. With the beginning of the year 2000, animated movies became a top trend. Craig Mullins and Jon Foster are two artists who play a pivotal role in illustrating storyboards for films.

Sarah Ludey is one of the most famous digital artists of the 21st century. She uses pixels to create her magic. Her work mostly consists of animated gifs. The First Digital Art program

New Era Of Game Design: What Transformed Games From Product To Art!

The history of computer games began in the 1940s and 1950s when simple games and simulations were developed in an academic environment. Game art was not popular for a long time, and only in the 1970s and 1980s, when arcade machines, game consoles, and home computers became available to the public, computer game art started to be a part of pop culture. For example, in the 80s everyone loved Pacman or one of the first isometric games of the 2000s, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It’s the same nowadays. From 2001 to 2022, the fast and affordable Internet changed everything. For example, digital distribution has practically

displaced traditional retail. Thanks to Steam and Origin, it is no longer necessary to go to a store or ask a friend for a CD. In addition, there are fewer differences between consoles and PC – most projects are multiplatform and support multiplayer. Many former console exclusives are available in the libraries of distribution services. Another significant gaming art platform of the era is the smartphone. If the “mobile” nineties – early “naughtiest” could entertain except for “Snake”, the current devices on Android and iOS issue a picture that once would have envied top computers. The phones are used to play not only hyper casual projects but also MMORPGs. And now let’s have a look at what are the main trends in 2022.

“Red Dead’s History” examines history through Red Dead Redemption 2. Set in 1899, the game follows Arthur Morgan, a robber on the run across America with his fictional gang. As the game progresses, Morgan travels through the West, the Deep South and Southern Appalachia. Olsson’s book uses the game as a gateway to analyze historical topics related to each region, using real historical context and sources.

“The idea was I’ll teach this experimental class in fall of 2021, and it uses the game as the hook, as the sort of entry point. It’s not a class about the fiction of the games,” Olsson said.

“But the fiction is a way to lead folks, get folks on board, and then to use their passion for the game to then explore the real dilemmas of race, class, gender, politics, power, violence as they played out in a really turbulent moment in American history.” At the start of each chapter, Olsson introduces the topic with a brief description of how it appears in game. Then, the chapter details the real historical context around each topic and what’s accurate or not so accurate about the game’s depiction of it.

The book explores issues such as chain gangs, railroads as corporate capitalism, Native American struggles, and

cowboys and the beef economy.talk about it in detail. echnology has expanded the canvas upon which artists can tell their stories. The only game art form that has existed in the digital space, video games are a collision of art and science. They include many forms of traditional artistic expression — sculpture in the form of 3D modeling, illustration, narrative arcs, and dynamic music. All of these things combine to create something that goes beyond everything. Each art form has an integral role in society and has its history. Just like modern games, we can confidently say that they are the new art form of 2022. Video games are also the only type of media that allows for personalizing the artistic experience while still retaining the artist’s authority. We find three distinct voices in video games: the creator, the game, and the player. Those who play a game are following the author’s story, being bound by the constructs of the rules. But based on the choices they make, the experience can be totally new and unique.
