Fashola’s statistics justify Lagos Road Traffic Law VITAL STATISTICS

OVERNOR Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, has given an account of his stewardship in the last 2,000 days noting that the state has recorded more voluntary compliance with the Road Traffic Law and an improved driving culture on the roads. Fashola, who spoke during an interactive session held in, Ikeja, the state capital with various stakeholders in attendance gave a detailed account particularly of what has happened so far as regards government’s efforts through policies rolled out to manage traffic Tracing the origin of the Road Traffic Law, Fashola noted that the amendment in the new law incorporates the remaining part of the Report of the Alhaji Musiliu Smith’s Security Committee which was set up in 2007 and which had not been fully implemented. “Many policies aimed at improving driving culture, regulating unauthorized vehicles and personnel, preventing drink driving and im-

P- Only 4 percent say they can still able to purchase alcohol within the motor park after the law, as against 58 percent before the law.

Lagos: City dotted by collapsed buildings The incessant building collapse in Lagos metropolis has left the sprawling city with not less than ten collapsed buildings in less than one year, Vanguard can authoritatively report. November 22, 2012 A two-storey building, Block M20, Jakande Estate, at Church Street, Oke-Afa, Isolo, Lagos, on Wednesday, November 22, 2012 Collapsed at about midnight killing two sisters. Just as the family in Isolo collapsed building were still counting their losses on Wedneday last week, calamity also struck the same day in the evening, as a storey building on 174B Corporation Drive Dolphin Estate in Ikoyi, collapsed killing a labourer. This happened in the eveing of the fateful day. A two storey building constructed by the Lagos state government in 2001 had collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday at the Jakande Low Cost Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo, killing two sisters and wounding their mother.

A three-storey building at 3, Anikantamo Street, at AdenijiAdele, Lagos Island, collapsed in June this year rendering about 30 families homeless. The incident occurred at 12.45 pm following a loud bang which jostled residents of the area. The building was constructed about 10 years ago and had signs of imminent collapse before now. Another collapse this year resulted to the death of one labourer, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries after a storey-building being refurbished, collapsed on the premises of the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited on FIRRO Road, Cappa, Oshodi, Lagos. This happened around March this year. Some occupants of a three-storey building on Lagos Island were believed to

he eight-year-old building located in Anikantamo area of Victoria Island near Adeniji Adele collapsed around 1p.m, without giving any sign. Rescue workers raced to the scene and began checking the rubble for any signs of life.

The spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaibu, confirmed the incident. Six people were equally reported dead and 30 others rescued when a four-storey building collapsed in the central Lagos business district last year. Six people were pulled out dead while there

were more trapped under the rubble. The tragedy occurred around July last year As Lagos residents were making last preparations on New Year ’s eve in 2011, to usher in a fresh year, tragedy struck, as a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Oshodi Local Government Area of Lagos State, killing four persons.
