Suspect attacks police, escapes on way to court BY KENNEDY MBELE n Ikeja Magistrate Court A sitting in Ogba, Agege in the Ikeja Magisterial District has remanded Sunday Akpan (23) in prison custody for allegedly escaping police custody with hand cuffs, property of the Nigeria Police Force. According to the prosecution, the suspect, standing trial in a case of alleged assault, escaped from police custody on Sept 11, 2015 while being taken to court for arraignment. The prosecution told the court that the suspect, in hand-cuffs, and accompanied by a female

Investigating Police Officer (IPO), pushed the latter out from a taxi inside traffic along Akilo Road, Ogba, Lagos and took to his heels. It alleged that efforts by the IPO to catch him proved abortive until September 12, when the suspect’s elder brother, Emmanuel Nathaniel Akpan, came to the police station and demanded that the police produce his brother whom they arrested for assault on September 7. The source added that, after serious interrogation by the police, the elder brother confessed that the suspect escaped from police custody

and was at home. He was then compelled to lead the police to their house in Alapere area of Lagos where both of them were arrested. The prosecution asked the court not to grant bail to the two suspects, stressing that they would disappear, particularly as they had not produced the police hand cuffs. The court ordered that the main suspect be remanded in prison custody while his elder brother that allegedly aided and abetted him be granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum. Both matters were adjourned for ruling on bail for the remanded suspect and mention for the second suspect.

D

elta Peoples Demo cratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief Fred Majemite, has given credit to Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa in the area of job creation. Speaking to journalists in Ughelli, Delta State, Majemite said that inspite of the lean resources available to the governor, he had performed creditably in his 100 days in office, having employed 6,000 youths under his job and wealth creation programme, christened “Okowaplus”. “He has started well by initiating the employment of 6,000 youths under his youth job creation scheme programme. If he maintains his promise of employing 6,000 youths every six months under the scheme, that means Okowa means well for the youths of the state in terms of job creation and empower-

ment,” Majemite disclosed. He pointed out that despite the lean resources available to the state, Okowa was still able to accommodate the political class on appointments. He said, although the political appointments might have not gone round, party faithful should be patient with Okowa as he may do more when he finally settles down and has enough resources to manage the affairs of the state.

“ However, the point must be emphasized, that we are all members of a big family of the PDP, no one is less”, Majemite explained. The PDP chieftain also gave kudos to Okowa in the area of revamping technical education and infrastructural development.““On assumption of office, he kick started the revamping of three technical colleges in Agbor, Ofagbe and Sapele. The three schools are presently undergoing extensive infrastructural overhauling. Beside, two General Hospitals in Patani and Abavo are being rebuilt, while the reconstruction of Sapele Main Market is nearing completion with extensive repair works also ongoing at Okpanam road in Asaba and other major roads in the state,” he observed. He said at the pace Okowa is going, if given more time, he would perform to the glory of God and ensure the prosperity he promised Deltans.

The incident allegedly took place on September 15 when the alleged victim’s two- year-old son was receiving medical treatment. The charge against the defendant read: “That you Ajibade Mohammed on September 15, 2015 at about 13.45hrs at Ifako Ijaiye General Hospital in the Ikeja Magisterial District did assault one Ikechi Ohale by beating her with your fist which caused her a swollen face; an offence punishable under Section 171 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. “Again, that you, Ajibade Mohammed on the same date, time and date in the same magisterial district did maliciously damage a complete weight scale valued at N30,000.00, property of Ifako Ijaiye General Hospital, Lagos State and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section
