together and I felt the human person in Victor. He was my first firm experiment in inter-ethnic brotherhood and by Jove, he was excellent and became godfather to my Ezinne in 1988.Through him, I became fortunate to meet and work with Lai Mohammed, Late Isaac Aluko-Olokun, Agnes Otsemobor, Ron and Moyo Mgbatogu, Clem Baiye, Jimi Disu, the present Emir of Karshi, HRH Ismaila Mohammed, Udeme Ufot and so many others. I have just found some 20 copies of his 1988 book, “Corporate Image: the Strategic Imperative in the Nigerian Banking Sector” with the forward written by the venerable Dr Abel Ubeku, OFR, who shocked me when he told me in an 1985 Econotrack Magazine interview,‘...we are the first generation in Industry,’a fact difficult to grasp then. Twenty five years after, where is Industry bequeathed? Commentators on the book included Biodun Shobanjo, then CEO of Insight Communications, Alhaji S.A.O. Sule, then President Institute of Bankers, Alhaji Abubakar Abdulkadir, then Managing Director of NIDB. The constant thread
is that most of these gentlemen are pathfinders, solid professionals, confident and modest. They were first generation operators in the niches of the Nigerian corporate sector, standard bearers, where VAO belonged even at a young age. It is a measure of VAO that he had paid his dues very early. I shall deliver these copies to our friend Segun Aina, current President of the Institute of Bankers for distribution at his discretion. Victor, you have gone ahead. This is such an unpleasant surprise for this season. So many will recall you, suave and self assured, your panache, who revelled in the usage of English as a language, a true conversationalist and one of the most eloquent of our generation. I recall you felt let down by some folks you would not believe could do so, but never mind, God ever knows best and He will rest your kind soul; He will give strength to the family you left. Farewell my brother and my friend. •Ogbuefi Tony J.K. Nnachetta is a Visiting Member of the Guardian Editorial Board PS: Organdie will be buried today Friday, January 11, 2013 in Abuja
