I

BADAN — THE Independent National Electoral Commission in Oyo State has said it is not comfortable with the proposal of the Oyo State House of Assembly that it should recognise eight additional constituencies in the state. This was disclosed by the Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Nasiru Ayilara in Ibadan, yesterday, during the voters’ education programme at the Sunshine International School, Ibadan. To show disapproval of the commission with demand of legislative arm in the state, the electoral body said it had appealed judgment by state High Court ordering it to recognise the eight constituencies and organise election for them within next three months. The 32-member legislative arm had filed the suit against INEC to recognise the eight additional constituencies it added to the current 32 constituencies. The REC who personally monitored the school prefect election at Sunshine Interna-

tional school, explained that good democratic culture should be inculcated into these children now that INEC had been refined. He added that if children were not exposed to good democratic principles at early stage, they would grow up to meet unenviable democratic culture. The introduction of the voters’ education programme in secondary school was flagged

off last year by the electoral body. Ayilara advised the politicians in Oyo State to play the game according to the rule as 2015 elections approach. He noted further that the goal of the commission in introducing the programme at the secondary schools was to discourage the youth from making themselves available for electoral violence.

The governor said high rate of crime in Nigeria is a symptom of failure of the state. The governor lamented a situation in which crime has become so pervasive in Nigeria.
