Matterhorn Bobsleds Designed as the first roller coaster in the world to use a tubular steel track, the “Matterhorn Bobsleds” attraction came about from very humble beginnings. During the initial construction for Disneyland, the excess dirt from the construction of “Sleeping Beauty Castle” was moved between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. That mound of dirt was used as a picnic area before the idea of a toboggan ride began to surface. The attraction officially debuted in 1959, having been designed to allow the “Skyway” to pass directly through it. Over the years, the Matterhorn has seen several refurbishments including one in 1978 which added improved design components throughout, and saw the addition of “Harold”, the iconic abominable snowman. Additional refurbishments have occurred in more recent years, which have helped keep the popular attraction up to date and enjoyable as time and technology have progressed. As one of the four “Mountains of Disneyland”, the fan-favorite attraction has been featured on numerous Disneyland souvenirs since it first opened.
