Haunted Mansion Even before Disneyland opened, the idea for an eerie manor attraction had been discussed by Walt and his Imagineers. Concept designs by Harper Goff showed early renditions of what would become the “Haunted Mansion” in as early as 1951. The original plan for the Mansion was for it to be a walk-through attraction, but changes in design, increased animatronics, and Imagineer ingenuity, helped turn the Mansion into the iconic Omnimover dark-ride that we know it as today. The “Haunted Mansion” was an immediate success, with its popularity lending itself to the creation of some of the most fun and unique souvenirs from the park. Many early Mansion-themed souvenirs feature popular imagery and characters from the attraction, and the spooky nature of the Mansion has helped maintain its public appeal to this day.
