SKWACHAYS

HEALING LODGE AN ABORIGINAL MEDICAL STAY FACULTY Vancouver Native Housing Society is pleased to announce that the SkwachĂŞys Healing Lodge & Residence was officially opened on June 11th, 2012. VNHS has long recognized the need for a culturally sensitive medical stay lodge for Aboriginal people who are required to travel to Vancouver for medical treatment and are very excited to have opened the facility after a ten year journey. The facility incorporates traditional Aboriginal design elements to provide an authentic feel and a real sense of an Aboriginal Healing Place. A unique feature of the Skwachays Healing Lodge & Residence is that there are a number of traditionally inspired gathering places within the Lodge that can accommodate healing circles, a ceremonial space, as well as a traditional storytelling space for cultural and community sharing. www.skwachays.com, 31 West Pender,

URBAN ABORIGINAL FAIR TRADE GALLERY

Welcome to the Urban Aboriginal Fair Trade Gallery The Urban Aboriginal Fair Trade Gallery is a social enterprise created by Vancouver Native Housing Society (VNHS) to provide a community owned resource for Aboriginal artists. The project grew out of a communications program, Looking Forward Looking Back, that looked at Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside through the eyes of Aboriginal artists. This site is a community driven initiative dedicated to sharing the artistic and cultural work of the urban Aboriginal community. There are many exciting projects underway and our site has been created to share them with our neighbours and friends on Vancouver’s Eastside and beyond. We invite you to watch our mural video on our website and to see our photo gallery of the unveiling ceremony and blessing of the beautiful new Aboriginal mural on the west wall of the Orwell Hotel at 456 East Hastings. www.urbanoriginal.org,, 29 West Pender V6B 1R3, 604-558-3589

Welcome to the Neighbourhoods of Vancouver DOWNTOWN edition. This guide points out and writes about the different neighbourhoods of Downtown Vancouver. It is for both locals and visitors alike and offers a special welcome to new Vancouverites as well. How often have you heard someone say, “Oh, I drive by that neighbourhood all the time but I was there 20 years ago and nothing has changed.” Well, let me tell you things have changed all over Metro Vancouver. The neighbourhoods are buzzing with activity and new developments and of course great local history. We will let you know who is new in each neighbourhood and also let you know if your old favorites are still around. We will tell you where interesting neighbourhoods have sprung up that you may not know about. Do you know these neighbourhoods Emery Barnes Park, Crosstown and Railtown? We call them ‘Boutique Neighbourhoods.’ There is so much to discover right here in our own back yard. Having been born and raised in Vancouver and a heritage writer, I feel qualified to pass on what I remember from my youth about our great city and about the great changes we are continuing to see to this day. This guide is meant to be kept for a year and to be taken with you as you visit a different neighbourhood each week or weekend as time allows. If you are a tourist, we are sure you will enjoy it too! So get out and explore your neighbourhoods. Christopher Best

Third Largest Chinatown in North America

Chinatown

This is North America’s third largest Chinatown. Mandarin and Cantonese are the mother tongues in 30 per cent of Vancouver homes, makes Chinese the largest “minority” ethnic group. There are lots of interesting markets with many varieties of fresh and dried seafood and mushrooms. You’ll also find inexpensive houseware and traditional Chinese medicine. During the summer, on weekend evenings, Keefer and Pender Streets become a busy open-air night market. If you have time for a leisurely meal, try dim sum at one of the many small restaurants. It is an inexpensive, multi-course culinary adventure. Besides the businesses on Pender Street, try East Georgia for some interesting newcomers and oldsters.

We accept selective consignment of clothing (for both women and men), accessories, housewares, small furniture, and unusual objects of interest. Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie The neon sign puts you in a film noir set in vintage Chinatown. Inside, pin-ups in the bathroom and whitewashed knives on the dining room wall wink to the storied past. But look more closely: Bao Bei is all 2010 – it’s taken this long to get such a fun take on Chinese dining. In the kitchen, chef Joel Watanabe (of Bin 942 and Araxi) homespins ingredients from close by with flavours from far away, irreverently and intelligently reminding us that comfort food doesn’t have to be white-bread. Egg noodles, flat and square, float in a deep-bodied broth with braised Pemberton beef, sharp watercress and organic tomatoes blistered to pull out their inherent sweetness, an inky sauce of cilantro and shallots on the side. A sumptuous shao bing sandwich, which puts pillowy pork, Asian

pear, pickled onion and mustard greens on sesame bread, reveals why the napkins, like the chopsticks, are self-serve. www.enroute.aircanada.com

The Shop started as 2 ideas in the minds of Brett Beadle and TJ Schneider. There wasn’t much talk of a business plan, the two of us just had a common love for all things motorcycle related, and figured that would be enough.

Our corporate showroom in Chinatown not only features our own designs but a carefully edited range of complimentary furniture, lighting and carpets from some of the most interesting names and brands in the world. We hope our store adds an interesting layer to the retail environment in Vancouver.

BESTIE is a friendly little sausage and beer parlour in the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown. Inspired by German street food, Bestie serves up a selection of finely crafted sausages, crispy fries, tasty side salads, fresh baked pretzels, and Chinatown’s finest currywurst. We work with master butchers and urban farms, whole ingredients, and sustainably raised meats. We have four curated taps of local beer, some odd German bottles, both colours of wine, and a storied selection of schnapps. Not to mention fancy soda pops, home made iced tea, ClubMate, and kombucha. Bestie is open for snappy lunches and friendly dinners Monday to Saturday and late night eats until 1am on Friday and Saturday. Find us at 105 East Pender Street. Just look for the neon sausage.

Roost cafe & bistro in Hogan’s Alley Hogan’s Alley was the local, unofficial name for Park Lane, an alley that ran through the southwestern corner of Strathcona in Vancouver, British Columbia during the first six decades of the twentieth century. It ran between Union and Prior Streets from approximately Main Street to Jackson Avenue. While Hogan’s Alley and the surrounding area was an ethnically diverse neighbourhood during this era, home to many Italian, Chinese and Japanese Canadians, a number of black families, black businesses, and the city’s only (continued on next page 24)

24 black church, the African Methodist Episcopal Fountain Chapel, were located there. As such, Hogan’s Alley was the first and last neighbourhood in Vancouver with a substantial concentrated black population. A possible reason these families settled there was because of the close proximity to the train stations since sleeping car porters were predominantly black men. A 1957 study by the City of Vancouver Planning Department described the black population of Strathcona as such: “The Negro population, while numerically small, is probably a large proportion of the total Negro population in Vancouver. Their choice of this area is partly its proximity to the railroads where many of them are employed, partly its cheapness and partly the fact that it is traditionally the home of many non-white groups.” Prior to 1935, Hogan’s Alley was a red light district, owing to Mayor L. D. Taylor’s “open town policy,” which was that police resources would be concentrated on major crimes, not victimless vice crimes. As a result of this policy, illegal drinking establishments, brothels, and gambling dens operated here, as they did in various other non-white sections of town like Chinatown and Japantown, but also in non-ethnically defined areas nearby such as Gastown, East Hastings and lower Mount Pleasant. This policy also earned Taylor a reputation for being soft on vice crime and he faced accusations of corruption. This was the basis of his electoral defeats in 1929 and 1934. Hogan’s Alley long outlived Taylor’s career in civic politics until it faced demolition to make way for a freeway. Below: Hogan’s Alley, (City of Vancouver Archives, Bu P508.53, photographer A.L. Railtown

Before American Can in 1910, it was home to a series of brothels run by Madame Dolly Darlington. Today it is home to a group of businesses intent on making it a design destination. The past can still be seen in the wood cobblestones that pop up on the streets in places, but with businesses like Vancouver Urban Winery and the newly opened Railtown Cafe mixed in amongst the likes of Inform Interiors, Colin Campbell Rugs, Layers & Layers and Crown Wallpaper & Fabrics, Railtown is well on its way to establishing itself as that other destination just east of Gastown. Railway and Alexander are its two principal streets sandwiched in between the docks and Hastings Street and Gastown and the Alexander Centre.

The Vancouver Urban Winery is truly one of a kind and will be the perfect venue for your event. The Main Floor Space has 4,000 square feet of open space nestled within oak wine barrels and beautiful stainless steel tanks.

If you are interested in the Winery for your event please contact us by phone or email. Our Event Coordination Team will contact you to find out a little more about your event. Once you have confirmed the Winery is the right fit for your event a member of our team will book a consultation meeting at the Winery.

8*/&3: 50634 5"45*/( #"3 8*/& 4)01 Vancouver Urban Winery is located two blocks off Gastown in the historic heart of Vancouver’s Railtown. The 7,700 square foot urban winery is the first of its kind in Vancouver and also operates as a unique special events space. The winery features 36 wine taps at the tasting bar where consumers can learn about British Columbia wines, and the exploding wine-on-tap category. The wine tasting bar at Vancouver Urban Winery is unlike any tasting experience in BC and all of Canada. At the tasting bar, you can taste wines from the different wine appellations across BC. With 36 rotating wines-on-tap, each experience at the tasting bar is unique. You are able to choose from the five tasting menu options or customize your very own tasting. You can also try our local food selection perfectly paired to each wine. The Vancouver Urban Winery tasting bar focuses on promoting local artisan foods with locally made jams, jellies, salts, antipastos, cheese, meats, banana breads, chocolate and much more. Alongside the tasting bar sits a boutique wine shop full of local items, wine merchandise, artisan foods, beverages‌ and plenty of wine! The urban winery concept brings the consumer closer to the winemaking experience in a more meaningful way than a simple wine bar or retail space might. Wine aficionados traditionally travel to remote areas to learn about winemaking firsthand and to taste the offerings of a wine producer in the setting in which they were made. Now, many urban dwellers can hop in their car for a short drive, take public transport or even walk to enjoy an authentic winery experience.

28 Payless Meats has been a part of the Powell street neighborhood since 1954. It is, as far as we know, the oldest butcher shop in the Greater Vancouver area with only three management changes to date. With 3500 square feet of space and a large selection of meats at low prices, the store has been an accommodating and integral part of the block for over half a century. As old as Payless Meats is, it now seems to be in itself, a little part of history. Many patrons have been coming to the shop for a number of years, some for even more than twenty. Some customers come everyday, some every once in a while. Recently, an old U.S. Navy officer stopped by the neighborhood and was pleasantly surprised to find that the store still existed. He recalled visiting the very same store back in 1965, when he was 19 years old, and his navy ship anchored iatthe waterfront docks inVancouver. The products sold in Payless Meats are not necessarily the most expensive cuts of meat. However, the modest prices cater to the people of this neighborhood better than any large commercial supermarket. Customers always comment on how they enjoy coming to this store and walking out of it feeling like they have gotten a good deal. Payless Meats has a decade old specialty meats package that will stock your freezer up for a week or a month, (continued on page 30)

Japantown, Little Yokohama, or Little Tokyo is an old neighbourhood in Vancouver, Canada, British Columbia, north of Chinatown, that once had a concentration of Japanese immigrants. During World War II when Japanese Canadians had their property confiscated and were interned (see Japanese Canadian internment), Japantown ceased to be a distinct Japanese ethnic area. Although some Japanese returned after the war, the community never revived. The area is now part of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Along Powell Street, a few remnants of the former Japanese neighbourhood still exist. The Vancouver Buddhist Church, formerly the Japanese Methodist Church, still exists at 220 Jackson Street (at Powell), as does the Vancouver Japanese Language School and Japanese Hall at 475 and 487 Alexander Street (at Jackson), which was established in 1906. Until the boom in Japanese restaurants in the 1980s, two restaurants on Powell Street were among the only Japanese dining in the city. Oppenheimer Park in this area is the site for the annual two day Powell Street Festival which began in 1977. It is held every August, in the first weekend of the month, and is a community celebration of Japanese heritage as well as the alternative and street culture of the Downtown Eastside.

30 Payless Meats continued: little snacks to get on the fly or while you are waiting for the bus outside, and sometimes wild meats during game season. Payless Meats is a discreet icon of the Powell street community. It’s presence on the block may be inconspicuous but it’s modesty and continuance makes it a part of the regular everyday stop for people of this community. A walk along Powell Street, east of Main Street, will bring you to a Bean Around The World coffee shop where you know the coffee is always good. A little further north back on Railway Street is the new Railtown cafe, where the locals go!

Gastown

Established the same year that Canada became a nation, Gastown grew into Canada’s third largest city and one of its most cosmopolitan. But the Gastown district today retains its historic charm, independent spirit and distinctiveness. There is no mistaking Gastown for any other area of Vancouver, or of Canada for that matter. 1920’s: Gastown grew and prospered, as did the rest of the City of Vancouver. But good times couldn’t last forever. Depression Years: Gastown fell on hard times and deteriorated into a stereotypical skid road area until the 1960s. Today, Gastown is back with new fashion, dining and galleries.

44 Vicino Pastaria & Deli Gastown’s newest restaurant, a pastacentric delicatessen and grocery. Not your average deli, we make pasta on site, create wonderful dishes to eat in or take out. We also sell our pasta and many other ingredients you love from Nicli available to take home. Nicli Antica Pizzeria Vancouver’s authentic Neapolitan pizza. Between Carrall and Columbia in Gastown, look for the red Neon Pizzeria sign. No reservations. Authentic wood-fired pizza Napoletana. Top quality Espresso and Teas, house-made Tiramisu, innovative cocktails and gold medal wine list. Jules Bistro Emmanuel Joinville’s remarkable little spot in Gastown hits all the right notes, conjuring hearty, unpretentious French bistro fare in a room transported straight from Le Marais. Start with the sizeable terrine de campagne with grape chutney before moving to the palatefondling beef tenderloin in a red wine sauce or the duck confit with white beans and shallot compote. Still going? Finish with a vanilla bean crème brûlée. Kronenbourg 1664 on tap and a daily three-course table d’hôte (greens, steak or salmon with frites, and chocolate terrine) for $26 make this room as affordable as it is authentic. Highly recommended.

L’Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler’s Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver’s first jail. Originally buttressed to the city’s main butchery and meat packing district, the name L’Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood’s colourful past. Serving up French-influenced West Coast fare in the heart of Vancouver’s Gastown. Dinner 7 nights a week and brunch on weekends. Our beloved private dining facilities are completely separate from our restaurant dining room, but the décor is an extension of our celebrated brick and beam style, with sleek, industrial glass and steel accents.

45 Kazakuro means little cherry tree. We think it’s the perfect symbol of Vancouver and of our place – a small scene that produces beautiful stuff appealing to all the senses. We blend traditional Japanese knowledge with modern techniques to create something truly new that embraces the spirit of the old. Here as in Japan, cherry blossom season is the start of spring; the beginning of a new season. And Kozakura is start of something new in Vancouver – a warm atmosphere that is both contemporary and traditional. We feature a kappo-style dining experience where the chef makes everything in front of you. tuc CRAFT KITCHEN Hi! Welcome to our kitchen table. Longtime friends, we have been talking about Tuc for years. At one time, each of us were planning to be a doctor or lawyer or some other impressive vocation; then we met, had a ton of fun working in restaurants and those careers went out the window. vision: to create a gathering place that feels like it has always been here. food: crafting irresistible dishes with exceptional, fresh, local ingredients. We wanted to create food for feasting. locally crafted beers: that reflect the personalities of their brew masters. Our Chef sources out the best local ingredients to re-create traditional peasant food or what we know of today as comfort food.

Welcome to The Sardine Can The Sardine Can, from restaurant duo Andrey Durbach and Chris Stewart, brings a (very) small slice of Spain to Gastown. With a white tiled floor and open kitchen, the interior is a nod to the intimate spaces of Barcelona and Madrid combined with a locally salvaged bartop and vintage lights. The tiny room offers bar seating, a menu of classic spanish tapas dishes, and an all-Spanish beer, sherry, wine and brandy list. Doors open every afternoon at 4 (noon on weekends). Come pull up a bar stool and take in the ambiance of Maple Tree Square over a glass of fino sherry and a plate of octopus, potato and chorizo stew.

Woodward’s Heritage Building

The building was built in 1903 by Charles Woodward as the second location for the Woodward’s department store. Woodward’s pioneered the concept of one-stop shopping; the store included a food floor which was at the time North America’s largest supermarket, household items, men’s and women’s fashion, and provided cheque cashing, travel booking and other services. The store was well-known for carrying a large variety of goods that were not available anywhere else. The store soon became a feature attraction in Vancouver, and it expanded over 12 separate phases to a

Gastown

final size of 12 storeys. It occupied approximately 2/3 of of the city block. The popularity of Woodward’s attracted many other businesses to the area. In 1944 the landmark “W” was installed on the top of the building on a 25 metre replica of the Eiffel Tower, replacing a pre-war searchlight-beacon which had until then been the building’s hallmark. The beacon, which was visible at night from as far away as Abbotsford and Mission, was shut down at the beginning of World War II because of its potential use as a landmark for aerial attacks.

While studio work forms the cornerstone of the business, ZWADA home also provides exquisitely crafted custom furniture, home furnishings and florals which are showcased throughout the store as an ever evolving exploration in design. The company’s vision was born out of a love for home and all that it encompasses. This means beautiful spaces, filled with family, friends and food. We believe homes should reflect the people who live in them. Like a great written work, great interiors tell a story. Our work involves a true collaboration between designer and client. Working with both local and international clients, whether it be a downtown high-rise condominium, country estate or urban loft, we approach each project with the same care and attention to detail.

More and more shops and eateries are moving down to this part of Pender Sreet. Pender use to be the heart of downtown along with Hastings Street but over the past few decades as retail has shifted to Robson Street, things have become very layed back on Pender. This layed back quality is now in demand and Pender is thriving once again as are several other streets nearby. Between the Hastings Hertiage District and Gastown there is lots to see. The wonderful heritage buildings are still all there they just have new tenants. Come down and see the area around Victory Square and relive the glory days of Vancouver’s old downtown.

Finch’s Tea & Coffee House Sandwich bars are becoming more and more popular in Vancouver, and as you can see from the pictures, Finch’s are quite welcomed by the Vancouverites during lunch hours. My friend and I did not expect the long time up when we decided to meet there for lunch. There are no reservations, and tables are first come first serve. Luckily, a table cleared just as we walked in and we carried some non-valuables on us to mark our spots before stepping in line. However, be prepared to take your lunches to go because seats are rare! I ordered myself one of their famous Pear blue brie baguette which I’ve just heard so much about! I was not disappointed. The ingredients were so fresh and paired so nicely together that each bite left me craving for more. The pear added a perfect natural sweetness to the sandwich making it light and refreshing whereas the roasted walnuts enhanced the texture. www./jubescomicblog.com/

SFU Vancouver Creation of the downtown campus was a 10-year project. The university had pioneered university mid-career professional education in Vancouver in the early 1980s with the launch of a store-front centre. It was rapidly outgrown and larger premises were leased. Dr. Warren Gill, SFU’s vice-president, university relations and an urban geographer who has played a key role in the development of SFU’ downtown presence, says “It was clear there was need for a down town university centre, but Simon Fraser knew it had to establish the facility through private sector support.” This was achieved and the re-built and revitalized 1927 Spencer building officially opened as SFU’s Vancouver campus on May 5, 1989.

In a modern-day evolution, the historic commerce and banking area of Vancouver’s West Hastings Street has become a centre for the most prestigious of Western Canadian retailing, including world-renowned brands. The concentration is now such that an opportunity exists for area development, marketing and promotion. While most of the existing retailers in the area are “destinations” for a select clientele, the consensus among them is that much can be gained through a strategic partnership.

There Is An Art To Finding The Perfect Fit Helping you to find your perfect fit is something that we are deeply committed to and passionate about. As a matter of fact, the first thing we do when someone walks into one of our stores is take the time to measure each one of their feet. This lets us (and our guest) know exactly what their size is—down to the half size and specific width. Though other shoes retailers have the option to do so, precious few do…and if they do, it’s certainly not measured to width as most stores have only one width size. Once we have determined their specific size, we select from our extensive collection of sizes--the best selection in the city. This is a result of us choosing to invest millions of dollars each year to ensure we have the adequate range of sizes to fit just about anyone. In short, it’s having the willingness to properly measure a foot AND having any and all sizes on-hand is what creates the art for finding the perfect fit. The first Ingledew’s Shoe store was opened in 1915 by William Wright Ingledew. 90 years and 4 generations later, Ingledew’s is still family owned and operated and has grown from one small store on Granville Street to twelve locations throughout the lower mainland and Victoria. At the time Ingledew’s first opened, choices in footwear styles were limited and predominantly classic dress shoes. However, Mr. Ingledew quickly observed that his customers enjoyed having

71

Heritage District

VANCOUVER a selection of shoes in one store. He revolutionized the shoe store concept by offering customers an unparalleled assortment of styles, sizes and widths. People loved it: Ingledew’s became THE place to shop. From the beginning, we have tried to listen to what our customers value and have made every effort to satisfy their needs. As they’ve changed, so have we. When many of our customers moved to the suburbs, we followed and opened stores closer to their neighbourhoods. As advances in shoe manufacturing technology occured, we have been quick to expand our product offerings to introduce important new product features to our customers. When a demand for casual shoes became evident, we quickly integrated the top comfort brands into our merchandise mix. At Ingledew’s our goal is to help every customer find shoes that are the right fit, whether that be long-term comfort or short-term glamour. We also believe that you don’t have to necessarily sacrifice comfort for style - or style for comfort, although we’re the first to admit that not all shoes were made for walking. If you ask Vancouverites what we sell in our stores, chances are they’ll say dress shoes. We carry many famous dress shoe brands such as Amalfi, Stuart Weitzman, Roberto Capucci, Allen Edmonds, Florsheim, Mezlan, Magnanni and many others as well as our extensive and exclusive private label collections from Italy and Spain.

Back down at Hastings on the other side of the street is the first Starbucks LEED store. On the North side of Hastings at Seymour is an old Heritage building that used to be the famous T. It is now the Wosk Centre for Dialogue, a part of Simon Fraser University. Across from the Wosk Centre is the Sears Tower Mall. SFU has the first half of the block and the mall the second. VANCOUVER CONVENTION CENTRE In 2003, some $100 million in delegate spending was lost because Vancouver did not have enough meeting space to accommodate groups wishing to hold conventions in the city. The expansion of the convention centre followed a review by the Convention Centre Task Force, made up of members of the business community. The expansion increases the number of delegate days each year from the current 150,000 to nearly 370,000 within the first five years after opening. On average, a delegate will spend about $350 per day during their visit to Vancouver, with about one-third of convention delegates traveling to other parts of the province as part of their stay. Built over land and water on some 1,000 piles, the expansion has just been completed this spring 2009. In 2010, the VCEC will be home of the 2010 Olympic Games media and broadcast centre centres. In order to ensure that the expansion and existing facility are fully integrated, a glass-walled connector will link the facilities, providing delegates with exceptional harbor views as well as a seamless transition. Featuring floor-to-ceiling glass throughout the expansion, the project will also include a six-acre living roof, one of the largest of its kind in the world. This unique ecosystem is one of many environmental innovations included in the expansion. It’s easy to think green at the Vancouver Convention Centre. With more than 350 events per year, we maintain an extensive environmental program and work closely with clients to ensure sustainability in all events.

80 Recycling: We recycle an average of 180,000 kilograms of materials annually – nearly half of the total volume of waste generated. Food & Beverage: Our ‘scratch’ kitchen uses fresh local ingredients without additives, avoids disposable utensils and dishes, and donates leftover food to local charities. Green Design: •Our six-acre “living roof” houses thousands of indigenous plants and recovers rainwater for irrigation. •Seawater heating and cooling and on-site water treatment. •Fish habitat built into the building foundations. Energy Conservation: •Designated a Powersmart Convention Centre by BC Hydro. •Awarded “GO GREEN” certificate from the Building Owners and Managers. •West Building expansion built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification standards

At the foot of Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver a new neighborhood is taking place. It is called Burrard Landing. On a sunny day you will find convention centre delegates eating their lunches on the many benches that dot the eastside of Vancouver’s new downtown waterfront convention centre. Eateries and other businesses are gradually filling in the vacant spots underneath the convention centre, affording both Vancouverites and tourists a spectacular vista to stroll along and enjoy Vancouver scenery at its finest. The latest edition edition and by far what I think will be become the most successful to date is Mahony & Sons Public House, situated right on the corner edge of the convention centre walk around. Sit on the large expansive patio or listen to the Irish music inside, it doesn’t matter, you will love the place. www.mahonyandsons.com

82 Miku, written in Japanese, symbolically means ‘a beautiful sky.’ Founded in 2008, Miku Restaurant was the original site of Aburi sushi in North America. Over the course of four years, it has developed into one of the most unique and popular Japanese venues in Vancouver. Our following has continued to grow, prompting the need to expand and relocate to a larger facility in order to better serve our guests. This spring Miku will be closing its doors at 2-1055 West Hastings St and re-opening at 200 Granville St. Our new waterfront location features a full bar and lounge area, private dining room and waterfront patio. Aburi Sushi is an innovation born out of creativity and nurtured in tradition. While Aburi is a new concept in the culinary field of sushi, its foundation is based on the values of traditional sushi making. The basis of our menu concept is a traditional and timeless foundation, balanced with innovation and exploration of culinary boundaries, creating dishes that are familiar and new at the same time.

VANCOUVER HARBOUR FLIGHT CENTRE .. is the new downtown seaplane terminal available to multiple seaplane operators offering scheduled and chartered flights to many B.C. locations. The state of the art terminal offers for the travelling public complete efficiency and professional service. Located in front of the Vancouver Convention Centre, the permanent seaplane facility replaces the existing temporary seaplane facilities that are slated to be decommissioned later this year. The seaplane terminal facilities occupy approximately 1,000 square metres of the Vancouver Convention Centre (3500 level) and include ticketing counters, and contemporary staff office space. Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre seaplane development is equipped to provide full services to seaplane operators. The docks feature a concrete designed level surface with no pilings, anchored using the SEAFLEX mooring system. “Vancouver’s new seaplane facilities create an atmosphere of comfort and service to further enhance the experience of Vancouver’s bustling seaplane industry,” said Graham

84 Clarke, Chairman of Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre. “Increased traffic and passenger preferences support new flight destinations, enabling better access to BC’s coastal regions. This helps stimulate business and tourism sectors throughout the province.” “The central location of Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre gives a boost to retail and services located near the eastern seawall,” said Scott Lyons, President of Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre. Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre, a partnership between the Clarke Group of Companies and The Ledcor the Group of Companies, is defining the future of seaplane travel by designing terminal facilities that bring a new level of convenience and efficiency to seaplane operators and passengers travelling to the Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, Victoria, Nanaimo and other coastal destinations. The seaplane docks are engineered for longevity and to uphold the standards set by the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion Project.

Books with local content but world-wide appeal.

Sid Fattedad former VP of Canadian Airlines and the man who spearheaded the employee buy-out plan back in the day finally tells the inside story as to what actually happened causing Canada to lose its second national carrier. He cut the hair of most CEO’s and business leaders in downtown Vancouver for five decades. His tales from the chair are hilarious, heart-warming and lovingly told.

This is the first book that chronicles the history of the youth band movement in Canada which started in Vancouver in 1933. It tells how band became an accredited course in the public school system and the dedicated group of educators who were responsible.
