THE NEW DOMESTICITY

By Julianna Lawson

the

NEW DOMESTICITY

O G PLAY OUTSIDE 1

“We can do it all from A to Z, Cuz we got our computer! All our stuff is wireless! We can see it all on TV!” The audience laughed at the absurdity of the song as the character Mike Teavee lauded the glories of technology in Journey Theater Arts’ recent production of “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Jr.” Who needs to leave home? We can see it all on TV! Of course we in the audience all knew it was absurd. We’d never substitute real life for a screen! Or would we? As our society becomes increasingly dependent on screens, it behooves us to take an occasional step back to slow down and make wise, intentional choices for the well-being of our children. In his book, “Last Child in the Woods,” Richard Louv writes of the alarming (non-dirt) path on which many families find themselves today, compared with the paths of our parents and grandparents who spent much of their time outdoors, both as children and as adults.

The number of kids who simply “play outside” today is drastically diminishing. Louv encourages parents to combat what he calls “nature deficit disorder,” reminding us that, unlike television, “nature inspires creativity in a child by demanding visualization and the full use of the senses.” This inspiration, this use of the senses, will help our children become more fully alive, more fully themselves. As spring bursts anew this year, what are some ways we can fight this “disorder”? How can we teach our children to experience a life full of wonder and unparalleled sensory delight? One important way that we can instill a sense of wonder in our children is to share nature-centered stories from our childhoods. Sharon McShea of Vancouver recalls a childhood experience that flooded her senses: “The leaves were always beautiful and abundant, which, of course, meant they had to be raked. Knowing we got to jump in the piles eased the burden of the task. After we had our fun, my dad would burn the leaf piles, and my mom wrapped potatoes in tin foil so we could roast them in the fire. So many happy memories! The crisp air, the crunchy leaves, the smell of the burning leaves!” continued on next page

As we fill our children’s minds with a yearning for the possibilities that nature holds, let’s take them outside, beginning in our own backyards. Feed your child’s natural curiosity by letting him explore, by modeling for her what it means to watch and listen. Spend time noticing the birds that come to the feeder. Watch a caterpillar inch its way up a stem of grass. Listen to the chatter of the squirrels in the treetops. For an even more “fruitful” experience, plant a garden. Children will take great pride in tending to their own plots of land and find joy as the green shoots peek expectantly through the earth. Stepping beyond our backyards, we can explore the abundance of parks, trails, creeks and rivers our area has to offer. Chavala Merit of Brush Prairie, who enjoys exploring with her children, ages 6 and 2, encourages parents, “Let kids get dirty! Let them feel grass and dirt and sand. Let them feel the water from a river on their feet. Memories are made in the dirt!” Merit says her son is happiest when playing along the banks of the Washougal River. Our family recently enjoyed a walk along the Burnt Bridge Creek Trail, and one of my greatest delights was seeing how each of

my kids became more themselves in the outdoors. One child spent time taking pictures of the scenery, while another enjoyed throwing stones into the creek. Another simply ran up and down the paths, and yet another enjoyed quietly visiting and dreaming. Carolyn Nichols, an avid hiker, enjoys sharing her trail expertise with Vancouver area families. Some of her favorite local haunts, for younger children especially, include Round Lake in Camas, with its gently rolling hills and lush forests, and the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge, which teems with wildlife such as herons and egrets. Nichols recommends William Sullivan’s book, “100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington” for families who are ready to hit the trail. For a more intense outdoor experience, try a family campout. Our own Columbia River Gorge is host to a number of great campgrounds. A few days and nights in the woods will teach a child to listen, look, and learn from nature in ways that few experiences can. Additionally, these adventures provide a way for families to work together and enjoy each other’s company . . . without the distraction of screens. This spring, let’s step outside with our children, whether it’s to our own backyards or to a verdant mountain path, and truly experience life. Let’s take to heart the words of naturalist John Muir who said, “Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” Visit www.VancouverFamilyMagazine.com/Camping for a list of great campgrounds within a couple of hours of Vancouver.

Julianna Lawson and her husband, Jamie, make their home in Vancouver with their four children, ages 9 to 16. Julianna enjoys sharing nature with her family, especially if it involves watching for birds, gathering around a campfire, or gazing at the moon.

Non-Profit Spotlight

Bike Clark County NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT

Education. Advocacy. Adventure.

By Jackie Genis

Bike Clark County Cycles Safety and Advocacy Forward Most of us can still remember the feeling of learning how to ride a bicycle—the wonderful feeling of anticipation and that joyful moment when mom or dad finally lets go of the back of the bike and sets us free! With freedom comes some responsibility though. And in the case of bicycles, that means learning how to operate one safely among larger, speedier forms of transportation, and among pedestrians as well. Bike Clark County is a guiding light for teaching responsible bike ownership and bicycle safety to children and adults. The nonprofit located in downtown Vancouver is an all-volunteer run organization founded in the spring of 2011. Its mission is to promote safe and responsible cycling in Clark County, and, of course, a lifelong joy for the simple, fun, and eco-friendly mode of transportation bikes allow to all of us. “I want to be a good male role model and mentor to the kids in the community,” says Eric Giacchino, president, and a dedicated volunteer for Bike Clark County. “I hope the kids become lifelong cyclists. They don’t have to geek out on it like me, but if they walk away enjoying and taking pride in their bike ownership, they will continue to ride.” SAFETY FIRST Bike Clark County’s largest program is the middle school Bicycle Education Course. This effort has been occurring for over a decade and has benefited hundreds of kids beginning to ride independently while still learning to safely operate a bike in the jungle of cars. Currently Discovery, McLoughlin, and Wy’East Middle Schools are partnering with Bike Clark County to run the safety program, which works in conjunction with students’ physical education class at school.

10

“It’s about bike safety,” says Giacchino, “and how to be a vehicle and use that vehicle (bike) safely to go to school, go to the park, or go to the store.” LEARNING THE RULES OF THE ROAD The PE teacher develops a suitable course at each school on the playground for kids to begin practicing the “rules of the road” and other safety measures while riding, including proper obedience at traffic signals and how to handle a busy intersection. They learn hand signals, the importance of staying alert and staying predictable for drivers while riding defensively, and to always expect the unexpected. After practicing for a week on the playground, the two week program culminates in a group neighborhood ride around the school. Bike Clark County assists with providing helmets for each child and a fleet of matching and well maintained training bicycles. Volunteers coordinate with the school to deliver the bikes and perform a helmet fitting. “We would like to expand the program to more schools in upcoming years,” says board member and volunteer Peter Van Tilburg. RESPONSIBILITY ROLLS ON In addition to the School Bicycle Education Course, Bike Clark County coordinates an Earn a Bike Camp. This two day (eight hour) opportunity teaches kids valuable life skills, responsible bike ownership, and social responsibility by serving as a volunteer in Bike Clark County’s shop. Participants receive a free used bike that they get to practice maintenance skills on directly. The participating kids keep the bike at the end of the program. “We vet the middle school kids, and they come to our shop for four hours on a Saturday, and they work for us,” says Giacchino about the popular Earn a Bike Camp. “They fix bikes, cleanup, sweep the floor, and do other work that needs to get done.”

Middle school students apply through their teachers to volunteer four hours on two different Saturdays to work in Bike Clark County’s shop. Sixteen kids have participated already this year. Their effort to help as volunteers serves to keep the shop running. They also learn how to use tools and conduct basic bike maintenance. On the last day of the program, students get to work on their own bike that they select and then take it home, along with a cool helmet and T-shirt. The Earn a Bike Camp program is fairly new and contributes to Bike Clark County’s mission to empower community members with increased education and access to bikes as reliable and affordable transportation. “It’s a really cool program,” says Giacchino. “We have had good success with it.” HOW TO HELP Bike donations are welcome. Bike Clark County will tune up old bikes—even those that are not currently functioning—and redistribute them back into the community. The bikes receive needed repairs during one of the organization’s bike maintenance classes. Cash donations are welcome too. The annual cost for helmets is $5,000-$6,000 and money is always needed to help with supplies for featured programs, tools, work benches, and parts necessary to properly maintain the bikes. There are some overhead costs for the shop itself. Donations can also serve as allocated sponsorship money for kids in the Earn a Bike program. VOLUNTEERS WELCOME Volunteers are wanted and welcome at Bike Clark County. It is possible to donate a day here and there to help or to get on board with bigger time commitments. There is no pressure attached to the volunteering. Giacchino says the organization is in need of a grant and newsletter writer and people with a passion and understanding of bikes and bike maintenance.

“It’s a great group of people. We have a core group of 15-20 volunteers with additional people that show up to help in various capacities. Some volunteer for the school programs and some to work on fixing up bikes, etc.” Other volunteer needs right now include people who can tow a trailer to deliver and pick up bike fleets at the schools. And, of course, upcoming events will need volunteers as well. There is a new partnership forming with Fort Vancouver National Site in cooperation with Vancouver Parks and Recreation to provide the bicycle safety course this summer for those who don’t get to take advantage of it at a particular school. The first bicycle safety camp begins in July. “I would like to see a bike trips for kids program,” says Giacchino, “and take kids out for a daylong bike ride–and my dream in addition to day bike trips would be a bike safety program at every middle school.” To learn more, visit www.bikeclarkcounty.org. Check out the calendar to see upcoming camps and events. Jackie Genis is a freelance journalist living in Vancouver. When she isn’t writing stories or professional resumes, she is found spending time with her two young sons and feeling grateful for all of life’s possibilities.

By Vivian Mattila Walikainen

On April 15 over 600 people will hit the streets of Vancouver armed with shovels, paintbrushes, and theater costumes. This is not a new reality show or live entertainment, but a community event of love in action.

What started in 2002 as a senior project by Amy Jeffries at Vancouver School of Arts and Academics (VSAA) is now an entire student body project—585 students in grades 6-12. This year, these students along with 40 adult volunteers, will go out into their neighborhoods to engage in various service projects around the Vancouver area. These simple acts of compassionate service affect our community in extremely positive ways; the shared smiles and helpful actions benefit both givers and receivers. These volunteers appear to be living out the famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Savannah Kashow, a graduate of VSAA explains, “Each year VSAA does all kinds

of projects from yard work to working at elementary schools with students, making cards to send to soldiers to sewing blankets for those in need. Each year the projects vary. Usually there are around 30 different projects happening all over the Vancouver and Portland area.” Savannah’s sister, Emily, who is currently involved with the project as a VSAA senior, chimes in, “Some of the projects include going to food banks, cleaning up and beautification of downtown Vancouver, making cards for veterans and making quilts for a local children’s hospitals.” This Day of Caring is the culmination of months of planning and organizing service projects in the area. This event is studentled and a great opportunity for students to learn leadership and community service. Emily Kashow continues, “VSAA is fueled by the Vancouver community and it is such a rewarding experience to go out and give back to those who never fail to help us out. Day of Caring has helped teach me that

there is no better way to get outside of yourself than by helping others.” According to Lori Rotherham, Associate Principal at VSAA, numerous past projects have been performed at various sites around the community. Some of these include Project Linus (making quilts), Cards Galore (designing cards for veterans and children in the hospital), downtown Vancouver cleanup, Fort Vancouver Rose garden (planting, gardening, and weeding), Harney Elementary School (working with elementary students), Silver Buckle and Royal Ridges ranch (painting and maintenance), Parks and Recreation (cleaning trails near Vancouver Lake), and NE Portland Food bank (organizing groceries and food boxes). not wasted student time. These empathetic acts of service bond our community in inexplicable ways and inspire others to do the same. Jodene Cook, coordinator at Project Linus of Portland/Vancouver says, “The students love to come and participate in the Day of Caring at VSAA!” Project Linus delivers quilts to children in crisis around the community. Cook continues, “The students draw pictures on muslin squares, pick novelty prints to go with their pictures and design fantastic quilt tops which we then finish into quilts and give to children in need of a hug. Over the years we probably have done close to fifty quilts. That means that fifty children going through difficult times have received a quilt thanks to Day of Caring at VSAA!” Jennifer Williams, fifth grade teacher at Marshall Elementary School, echoes the enthusiasm. “Students have come and helped in classrooms or put on theater workshops for the past five years. Savannah Kashow sums up the benefits of the Day of Caring: “It instills an awareness of how blessed we all are and how much joy service can bring. There are so many people in need and such simple things we each can do to be involved in assisting those needs. Really, all it takes to make a difference is a smile and a thought of what we can do to impact the lives of those around us. The Day of Caring really gives all VSAA students a new perspective on service; not only is it simple, it is extremely gratifying.”

The rest of us might even be inspired to join these enthusiastic volunteers on the Day of Caring—to find ourselves in the service of others.

SUMMER CAMP is a time-honored tradition, rich with activities, newfound friendships and a lifetime of memories. Here is how to make your child’s camp experience smooth sailing from start to finish.

S’more Than Just Fun According to the RAND Corporation, a non-profit research organization, children who participate in summer programs, like experiential learning activities offered in an organized camp, are less likely to experience a significant summer learning slide. In addition, camp enhances a child’s physical and emotional well-being. Activities build social skills, teamwork and independence, which all contribute to stronger self-confidence and leadership abilities.

Camp Sunshine Vancouver, we have access to some beautiful natural wonders, campgrounds and parks.” So how do you find a camp that’s right for your child?

Avoid Camp Run Amok First, together with your child, decide what skills you want your child to gain. Choose a camp that fits her needs and interests, as well as your family’s values.

Many camps also provide kids with the opportunity to get closer to nature.

Check out safety guidelines in the camp’s parent handbook. Look for overnight camps accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), which sets rigorous quality and safety standards for its members.

“Kids need some way to get out and see the world,” says seasoned camper Lance Kartchner, a former Boy Scout leader and Vancouver father of four. “Here in

Day camps are a practical way to introduce children, ages 5 to 12, to the camp experience. Most center on a theme, like sports, science, nature, technology and the arts. “Day camps create a space for younger kids to really explore all kinds of activities and find new interests,” says Kim Summers, director of Camp Namanu Programs for Camp Fire Columbia.

Camp Ability Specialty camps center around one activity like music, art, sports or science. These programs can be an ideal complement to regular day camps. Other specialty camps build their programs around specific groups of children like atrisk youth, children with disabilities, kids with challenging medical conditions or gifted kids.

Conquer Camp Blues Ease the transition from home to camp through preparation. Before your child departs, go over a list of everything she will need. Pack a physical connection to home like a favorite sleeping bag, stuffed animal or pillow. If possible, mail a card ahead of time to ensure it arrives before the end of camp. Tell your child how you look forward to hearing her camp stories, but avoid saying how much you miss her, which can trigger homesickness and worry. Initial nervousness isn’t unusual. If your child asks to come home, consider the situation, but encourage her to discuss her anxieties with the camp counselor and take it one day at a time. “Distraction, love and caring seem to be the three most helpful factors for assisting

homesick campers,” says Greg Moon, a Boy Scout leader and a Vancouver father of five children who have participated in day camps, faith-based camps and overnight Scout camps. Moon says homesickness is also eased when camps pair kids with a friend or a buddy. While your child may struggle at first, chances are he’ll come home a happy camper with a heightened sense of selfconfidence, memorable stories and a passel of new friends to boot.
