Vancouver Chamber Choir 2013 - 2014 Concert Season

Page 1

2013 - 2014

Welcome to the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s newest season We hope you’ll make the vocal art part of your life, too! As we enter the Choir’s 43rd season (!) I’ve been reflecting on how broad and inclusive our community really is. We are singers, staff and board members, of course... and composers, players and guest artists. But we are audience, too, music-lovers and listeners... and volunteer workers, subscribers, donors, patrons, sponsors, presenters, CD-buyers, supporters of all kinds. You yourself probably play more than one of those roles in what is an amazingly vital and far-flung community. If so, you are essential in maintaining the whole enterprise - you are one of my most important partners in keeping the music alive. The Vancouver Chamber Choir experience is a broad one - something we’ve tried to reflect in this brochure. But the concerts themselves and our unique subscription series - the largest on the continent - are central to our endeavour. I encourage every person reading this message to become a subscriber right now. Every concert that you choose is a vote for the music you love. (Who was it who said,“We write the songs that make the whole world sing...”?) So, join us this new season - whether for the first time or the 43rd, I know you’ll love it!

A Baroque Christmas Music of Celebration 8 pm Friday, December 6, 2013 Orpheum Theatre (Downtown) Vancouver Chamber Choir | Vancouver Chamber Orchestra | Pacifica Singers Jon Washburn and Kevin Zakresky, conductors Celebrate the festive season with the Vancouver Chamber Choir in the Orpheum Theatre. Christmas is a joyful time and Baroque is a joyful music - the combination is magic. One of JS Bach’s most luminous works is featured - the Magnificat for soloists, choir and orchestra. Monteverdi’s Gloria concertata virtually glistens with the vigorous passagework of the Early Baroque. There is a contrasting Bach set of intimate chorales and choral songs called Weihnachtslieder. Then the concert ends with Handel at his affirming best in Blessed are They that Consider the Poor drawn from the anthem he wrote for his favourite charity, closing with a rousing Hallelujah! The Choir is joined by the Pacifica Singers and our Vancouver Chamber Orchestra for this scintillating evening of music. The Outreach Experience Reaching out to our communities

The Vancouver Chamber Choir does much more than just singing concerts - we also maintain an outstanding, award-winning program of educational outreach activities. We encourage university music students though our yearly introduction to professional singing called Focus! We foster the creativity of young choral composers through their participation in the Interplay Composers’ Workshops. Even the youngest composers (ages eight to 21!) are championed through our biennial Young Composers’ Competition. We help develop choral conductors from Canada and many other countries through their participation in the annual National Conductors' Symposium, now in its 33rd year. Our Young Composers’ Development Program includes commissions and consultations. And OnSite brings elementary and secondary students right into our rehearsals for an up-close insight into choral musicmaking at its best.

The experience was far and away even better than I “imagined it would be. ” Adam Hill (Vancouver, BC)
