Lost Dutchman State Park Named after the
fabled Lost Dutchman Gold Mine, the park lies at the base of the iconic Superstition Mountains which serve as the backdrop to a number of scenic hiking trails. It’s also where those with more intense desires can hike up the Siphon Draw trail to the Flatiron and onward across the Ridgeline all the way to the Peralta Trailhead. The Flatiron hike is just under 6 miles round trip but involves a 2,900foot accumulated gain in elevation. The Superstition Ridgeline hike is an 11.5-mile one-way hike with a nearly 4,500-foot accumulated gain in elevation, and requires one to plan a shuttle ride
back from the other end. These two hikes require some serious research and preparation and are probably best left to those who planned ahead and came prepared for that kind of an adventure, but the Siphon Draw trail is scenic even if one chooses not to take it quite that far. https://azstateparks.com/ lost-dutchman.

Canyon Lake Further
along the Apache Trail, this lake is one of a series of lakes along the Salt River. The Dolly Steamboat offers several different tours of the lake, including a 90-minute scenic nature cruise. If venturing further east, be advised that the pavement ends soon, and the road beyond can
be a bit rough. Once you reach the Tortilla Trailhead it’s just a little bit further to the overlook. There you will find a parking lot and a concrete walking path that leads to various scenic overlook points. Unfortunately, due to the flooding that followed the 2019 Woodbury Fire, a landslide has closed off the road beyond the Fish Hill Creek Overlook
indefinitely, so that spot now becomes a turnaround point when traveling the Apache Trail in an easterly direction. Heading back to Apache Junction from here, the chance to see everything one more time but in the opposite direction offers yet one more way to soak in the natural beauty that Arizona is known for.
Head south on I-17 to the AZ-101 Loop East and continue to AZ-101 Loop South. Take exit 51 to merge onto AZ-202 Loop East. Take exit 26 to East Brown Road. Follow East Brown Road and West Lost Dutchman Boulevard to AZ88/Apache Trail.

Master-Planned Community Near Sonoran Preserve Pushes Forward New Changes Include Larger Lots, Buffer and Trail Access

P
lans for Taylor Morrison’s proposed single-family masterplanned community near the Sonoran Preserve along Sonoran Desert Drive passed its first major hurdle when two City of Phoenix advisory committees greenlighted the land rezoning request by the developer, sending the project to the City’s Planning Commission for consideration. The privately owned property near the popular Apache Wash Trailhead surrounded by State Trust Land requires approval of a zoning change with the City of Phoenix

from S-1 (low density farm or residential uses) to PUD (Planned Unit Development). [See “Plans for Master Planned Community” Valley Vibe, February 2022.] Plans for Verdin, first introduced as a 1,420-home development on a privately owned 473-acre parcel between the Sonoran Foothills Community and Cave Creek Road, has been met with some opposition from area residents and members of the Phoenix Mountains Preservation Council and a group named “Save our Sonoran Preserve” due to the project’s density and its impact on the recreational activities and wildlife in the Sonoran Preserve,
along with increased traffic in the area. On the flip side, letters in support pointed out the density is reasonable for the area and the ability for the new development to provide much needed additional housing in the burgeoning area.
New Changes At its March meeting, the North Gateway Village Committee recommended approval “as is” without any additional conditions, but the builder’s legal representative, Susan Demmitt, of Gammage & Burnham presented a handful of revisions on behalf of the
KITCHEN CABINETS & BATHROOMS developer at the Desert View Village Committee meeting in April, stating “There’s been a real sense that this piece of property needs to be treated a little differently… we’re setting a precedent for what comes after us.”
AFTER
1. Reduction in density. Taylor Morrison has agreed to reduce the number of allowable units by 12 percent under the original proposal, lowering the number from 1,420 homes to 1,250 homes. 2. Elimination of small lot sizes. The small lot category previously allowed for some of the lot sizes to range as low as 3,000 square feet, which the developer deemed not an appropriate fit, Demmitt said. 3. Habitat buffer. An additional 25-foot open space transitional buffer along eastern portion of the property line will be maintained as native habitat.

The proposal was approved by the Desert View Village Committee with stipulations including completion of a traffic-impact study. If approved by the City's Planning Commission, it will then go before City Council (see dates below). Earthwork could begin as early as fall 2022, with lots ranging in size up to a third of an acre in gated and non-gated neighborhoods within the community governed by its own homeowner’s association. Planned community amenities include a private community center and outdoor recreation facilities, including a pool and sport courts, open space and a trail system with connections to the Sonoran Preserve.

Is the traditional education system not serving your child well?
Is your child more of a hands-on learner? Is an individualized learning experience a better fit for your child? Find out why Creative Castle’s Microschool could be the right solution for your child. What is a Microschool?
The concept is the result of rethinking the traditional education model in a private-school setting. The classic curriculum is individualized and learning is project-based so students are accountable for their own progress. Described as “outsourced homeschooling,” microschools are free from the bureaucracy and
mandatory curriculum that defines today's public school system. In addition to their kindergarten and preschool program offerings, Creative Castle has joined the microschool movement offering hands-on, activity-based education. Teachers focus on student-led activities and develop lessons and projects that help ignite the passion for knowledge and increase student engagement.

Ridgeline Academy to Move Upper Grades, Add Preschool BY KAREN GOVEIA

A
s Anthem Preparatory Academy prepares for its move into its new 82,000-squarefoot campus under construction just north of Anthem in August, Ridgeline Academy, another area charter school, plans to move its growing middle and high school over to
the soon-to-be vacant campus in the Cross of Christ Church building currently leased by Anthem Prep. Ridgeline Academy has been operating out of a
temporary campus along 41st Drive in Anthem for the last two years, which once served as the site of Caurus Academy’s high school and before that, Anthem Preparatory Academy. Much like the others, Ridgeline has grown its middle and upper grades, and with space at capacity, the move to the larger campus on the east side of Anthem near Daisy Mountain Drive and Gavilan Peak Parkway, comes at the right time. Ridgeline plans to sublet the campus from Anthem Prep for the 2022-23 school
year, with a promise of two additional years to continue the lease, according to School Director Keven Barker. The new campus will offer more space overall for its growing student body in grades 7–12, including better classroom space, a dedicated gymnasium/ drama and production space, a library, as well as outdoor space and a sports field, Barker said. But Barker stressed the move is only a temporary one. “It’s a great place and better suited for (Continued on Page 25)

education and a school, but it’s not our end goal,” he said. “We’re still searching for land to build our own permanent campus, preferably near our K-6 school, but given the current climate in commercial real estate, we’re trying to make sound fiscal decisions,” Barker added. In addition to core classes, the high school offers honors and dual enrollment courses, foreign language, fine and performing arts, technology, forensics,
social sciences and more. Sports offerings include football, volleyball, basketball, cross country, soccer, baseball, softball and track and field.
New Preschool/ Childcare Option The move also allows Ridgeline to utilize additional campus space in the new Anthem location to add its own preschool and childcare center, serving children ages
birth to 5 years old. The preschool is set to open for fall 2022 and preliminary details include a core knowledge

2022 Directory PBA’s mission is to work together to increase each other’s businesses and to give back to the community that has helped our businesses grow. PBA is a business-networking group founded in 2002 by area business leaders. We also believe in giving back to our community by way of community service projects and fundraisers for local charities. Our focus in these activities is to help the area children and schools. Since its inception, the PBA has a growing membership. We provide a referral base to each other and, in turn, to our customers by being able to direct them to other high-quality area merchants and service providers whom we can personally recommend.
