JOURNEY TO A HISTORIC MINING TOWN IN THE COOL PINES BY ANDREAS SCHMALZ

info@valleyvibenews.com

PHOTOS BY ANDREAS SCHMALZ

W

hile we’ve all probably unknowingly gazed in the general direction of Crown King when looking west from Sunset Point off the I-17, fewer of us have likely ventured to this historic mining town tucked high in the Bradshaw Mountains, yet less than a two-hour drive from North Phoenix.

16

|

Aptly named after the Crowned King Mine—the largest mine in the area with its first mining claim dating back to 1875—the town sits at a much cooler elevation of 5,771 feet.

drive vehicle is the 28-mile drive along County Road 59. Though the graded road is maintained, it is a bit rough, so adequate tires and a forgiving suspension are valuable.

There are several ways to get there, but no paved roads lead directly to the town. The most accessible route for those without a high-clearance 4-wheel

The pavement ends just before the town of Bumble Bee (which has a sign boasting a progressively greater number of cattle and horses than people)

and the journey begins. It’s in this area that the first mining districts in the Bradshaws were established back in 1864. It’s a good thing that the speed limit is reduced while driving through the town—if you blink, you might miss it altogether. Cleator is the next community on the way, which began in 1902 as a

railroad work camp, and is presently known for its Bar & Yacht Club. After Cleator, the drive continues at an increasing grade the rest of the way to Crown King. While driving the switchbacks, consider that back in 1904 the Bradshaw Mountain Railway followed this same path.

ADVENTURE VIBES |

No paved roads lead directly to Crown King. The most accessible route is a 28-mile drive along the dirt road, County Road 59.

The Gladiator Stamp Mill located within the Mill Restaurant.

Horsethief Basin

Highlights in Crown King include the Crown King Saloon, which opened in 1917 and has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating bar in Arizona; the General Store, established in 1904; and The Mill restaurant, which features a 10-stamp mill dating back to 1893. The Mill is currently only open on weekends from 11 a.m.–4 p.m., so it is advisable to check in advance for changes to their hours at www. crownkingmill.com.

If an overnight stay is part of your adventure, lodging options in town include Bear Creek Cabins, Crown King Cabins & Suites and Cedar Roost Inn.

Off-Roading Fun

For a more challenging adventure, Crown King can also be reached from the northern borders of Lake Pleasant Regional Park, but an off-road vehicle is a must, and the trail is a popular one among off-roaders. From Crown King, a drive to the Horsethief Basin Recreation Area

is a scenic trip, but one that requires the right kind of high-clearance vehicle. It’s about a 7-mile rough off-road drive leading to a beautiful lake open to non-motorized boating and fishing. Campsites include Hazlett Hollow Campground and Turney Gulch Group, and Horsethief Cabin which offers full amenities. Rich in history, a visit to Crown King is more about the journey itself for those with an adventuresome spirit.

Cattle is a common sighting along the drive near Bumble Bee Ranch.

GETTING THERE Head north on I-17 for 33 miles to exit #248 Bumble Bee. Turn left and follow the dirt road for approximately 28 miles to Crown King. Tip While at the General Store, the book “Crown King and the Southern Bradshaws: A Complete History,” by Bruce M. Wilson can be purchased for more details about the town and the surrounding area. Andreas Schmalz is a local Realtor and an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys trail hiking, nature photography, and scenic drives throughout Arizona.

hose looking for a new build that’s part of a neighborhood, but offers customizable floor plans for casitas, suites and RV garages with room to spread out on a lot roughly double that of the area’s typical size, might find their new home in the final phase of Arroyo Norte in New River just north of Anthem. William Ryan Homes is the builder offering six buildable floor plans ranging between 2,455– 3,216 square feet on 67 homesites with a minimum lot size of 16,800 square feet in the community located at the southeast corner of Frontage and Circle Mountain roads in New River.

Keeping consistent with the existing Arroyo Norte development, constructed by Meritage Homes, Richmond American Homes and Beazer Homes, the community will receive EPCOR water and sewer services. School boundaries lie within Deer Valley Unified School District, with students attending

New River Elementary, Gavilan Peak School for middle school and Boulder Creek High School. All floor plans are single story, based on the community’s proximity to nearby Daisy Mountain and in an effort to not obstruct the views of the existing neighborhoods surrounding the development.

Neighbor Bret Ceren, a local Realtor and a resident along Plymouth Drive in Anthem which backs to the development, said when he purchased his home in 2020 he knew that at some point the land behind his house would be developed. Ceren said William Ryan representatives have been open and welcoming with conversation, and he told Valley Vibe, “Based on the original approved community plans, the four [William Ryan] homesites closest to us [Plymouth Drive neighbors] can only be single story with maximum grade to peak height of 25 feet.” “We’ll see those roof lines, but they won’t impede our view,” he added. Home sales began in midJuly, and two models homes are currently under construction: The Tierra, 2,455 square-foot-design offering 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and a 3-car tandem garage, as well

as The Orion, a 3,036 squarefoot-design with 4 bedrooms, a game room, and 3.5 baths, and a 3-car garage. Both are expected to be completed in September or October.

William Ryan Homes Lyra Model Home

In an effort to keep up with the housing demand, William Ryan Sales Consultant Susan Collins told Valley Vibe the builder is only releasing a few homesites for sale per month, with priority given to those on the builder’s waitlist. Base pricing ranges between $734,900–$845,900. Flexible plan options according to the builder’s informational sheet, include: detached pool houses/casitas, formal dining rooms, spa baths, office/flex space, secondary bedroom suites, RV garages, 4–5 car garage options, suite options and ramadas.

DVUSD Opens New Space for Online Students to Collaborate BY VALLEY VIBE STAFF WRITERS

info@valleyvibenews.com

B

uilding off its first successful year, Deer Valley Unified School District’s Aspire Online Academy is taking the learning support to the next level with the opening of a new space for students and teachers to collaborate in person. The opening of the district’s newly constructed $2.5 million Innovation Center addresses the need to have a space to offer in-person support for online learners. The new 28,000-square-foot home to Aspire is located adjacent to the district’s main office near Beardsley Road and 15th Avenue and serves as a hub for students to receive instructional support from teachers, as well as space to work together with their peers on projects and gather for other subjects including art, music and physical education opportunities. Funding for the center came from the district’s 2019 bond initiative. DVUSD launched Aspire at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Students in grades K-8 receive live daily instruction

online, while students in grades 9-12 learn through prepared resources, virtual class meetings and in-person learning lab offerings. Aspire is open to all students in Arizona and there is no fee to enroll in the fulltime program. High school students already attending a DVUSD school have the option to add online courses to get ahead or for credit recovery. Advanced placement courses and dual enrollment credit options will be offered for high school students this fall. Roughly 500 students were enrolled in the program during the 2021-22 school year, and more than 1,200 students enrolled in a summer course. The program offers students a variety of elective classes, clubs, virtual shows, assemblies and family events. “The school is growing by creating more community opportunities and ways for students to learn… clubs such as Student Council and NJHS allow Aspire scholars to thrive as school leaders,” Aspire’s Principal Laura Victor and Director Juliet Amara told Valley Vibe in an email.

Anthem School Principal

Anthem School’s new head brings 23 years of experience in education, including serving 16 years of those years as principal of two different Title I schools which showed great gains in student achievement after both were in jeopardy of being placed into corrective action by the department of education. No stranger to Anthem, Kelly at one time attended church in Anthem School’s multipurpose room,

and is looking forward to working with what he calls “a close-knit community.” “School is a great place to foster [student] interests to bring out their talents. Anthem has many resources for individuals, and the school was put next to the community center as the developers knew that it takes a village to support individuals as they strive for their goals,” Kelly said.

2 Molly Gillette Desert Mountain School Principal While new to DVUSD, Desert Mountain School’s new principal brings more than 20 years of experience in education, as a teacher, coach, and school administrator in the public school setting, as well as charter and alternative schools. Most recently, Gillette served as principal of Luke Elementary School in the Dysart Unified School District. Gillette lives in Anthem with her husband and two

children who attend their neighborhood DVUSD school. In her spare time she enjoys attending her children’s athletic events, dining at local restaurants and hiking neighborhood and nearby trails. “Working in a school with a supportive, family-first culture is so important and we love being involved in the local community. The families of Desert Mountain are our most valuable partner in the education process and I cannot wait to build relationships,” Gillette said.

2022 Directory PBA’s mission is to work together to increase each other’s businesses and to give back to the community that has helped our businesses grow. PBA is a business-networking group founded in 2002 by area business leaders. We also believe in giving back to our community by way of community service projects and fundraisers for local charities. Our focus in these activities is to help the area children and schools. Since its inception, the PBA has a growing membership. We provide a referral base to each other and, in turn, to our customers by being able to direct them to other high-quality area merchants and service providers whom we can personally recommend.
