New Restaurants and Businesses Commit to North Gateway

Ahandful of new restaurants, retailers and other businesses have recently signed leases to join a new commercial development slated to begin construction soon as North Phoenix’s future urban village begins to take shape on 500 acres east of I-17, between Sonoran Desert Drive and Dove Valley Road.

• OverEasy, a breakfast/brunch restaurant

• Foothills Grille, American cuisine

• Yoga Six studio

• Fit Body Boot Camp

• Heartland Dental

• An unnamed nail salon

The retail shops are anticipated to be ready by the first quarter of 2024, said Torrey Briegel, associate vice president of Phoenix Commercial Advisors, broker

The developer’s site plan marketed by Phoenix Commercial Advisors also shows a yet-to-be-named hotel on an adjacent site to the east.

Berry Riddell LLC, representing developer Thompson Thrift. Following the presentation, the board approved a site modification to the plan to be submitted for review and final approval from the city’s planning hearing officer.

Once the retail buildings are constructed, plans include a “North Gateway” mural within the village, to help define the North Gateway Core.

The area bounded by Skunk Creek Wash on the west, and North Valley Parkway on the east, has been defined by the city as “a minidowntown for the North Valley,”

according to planning documents. The city’s goal is to create “a highdensity, urban environment that will reduce automobile trips, support transit and promote Skunk Creek Wash as a major natural amenity that allows for a trail.”

Thompson Thrift owns a total of 30 acres in this area planned for mixed use including restaurants, retail and multifamily residential. Quick Quack car wash recently opened for business on the corner of Dove Valley Road and North Valley Parkway.

A number of other multifamily residential developments are also in the works within this fast-growing pocket.

NORTERRA GETS LIVELY

2 ENTERTAINMENT CENTERS OPENING

First came the dining, now comes the entertainment. If virtual reality games and escape rooms are your jam, along with bowling, arcade-style games and yard games, the Happy Valley/Norterra area will soon have all of this.

As part of its plan to bring a livelier scene to North Phoenix area residents, two new entertainment centers have big plans to open in the Shops at Norterra.

Harkins BackLot

To the surprise of many North Phoenix area residents, Best Buy closed in early March, and a few weeks later Harkins Theaters, which operates the Norterra 14 movie theaters, announced it will be taking over the former electronics retailer’s space and converting into a new family entertainment concept.

“Expanding our brand to dedicated family entertainment

centers is a natural progression of our innovation legacy,” said Harkins CEO and president Mike Bowers. “Our secret sauce is our unique ability to pair the fun of an entertainment center with the excitement of movies at our movie studio-themed BackLot entertainment centers.”

Harkins BackLot will feature a full-service restaurant and bar, a sports viewing area with large screens featuring digital sound and riser seating, Brunswick bowling lanes, an arcade with video and virtual reality games for all ages, an outdoor patio with yard games and sports viewing, as well as private event space for parties and corporate events.

Harkins anticipates opening the new family entertainment center in 2024.

Opening much sooner is Funtainment AZ in the space vacated by Shasta Pools. Plans include a virtual reality escape room, virtual reality sports games including baseball and tennis.

The vision to bring more dining and entertainment has been in the works since 2018 at the Shops at Norterra when some of the center’s retail space was reconfigured to accommodate additional restaurants like State 48 Brewery, Eggstasy and Osteria Mia with open-air patios.

The Anthem location is the first Arizona location for the Coloradobased coffee chain. It will feature a drive-thru along with a walk-up order window.

Phoenix natives and franchise owners Cheryl

Clark-Stoner and Larry Adams told Valley Vibe, “We wanted to bring this refreshing change to the coffee community in the Anthem area.” “With our focus on family, we felt that Ziggi’s Coffee, as a familyoriented business, is a good fit for Anthem and blends nicely with the local businesses, who have been welcoming and positive in their feedback.”

Specialty drinks include the chain’s Beach Bum Energy Infusion, Blended Chai and Peanut Butter Mocha, as well as its signature Raspberry Truffle, Caramel Macchiato and Hazelnut Cream.

Ridgeline Student Wins State History Essay Contest

After winning at the state level, a fifth grade student at Ridgeline Academy is now competing at the national level with her essay in American history for the Arizona Daughters of the American Revolution’s annual contest.

Before winning the state competition, Ella Favia’s essay was selected as the local Ocotillo chapter winner out of 70 entries. The contest was established to encourage young people to think creatively about the nation’s great history and learn about history in a new light, according to DAR.

Her essay is now being judged at the national level. DAR is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War.

“We are so proud of Ella and her ability to share her knowledge through such a creative, thoughtful medium. She is not

only academically talented but a great role model for her friends and peers,” Ridgeline Academy

Principal Bonnie Perry told Valley Vibe. “We are so happy for her and are thankful we get to be on this journey with her,” Perry added.

The contest is open to students in public and private schools, as well as registered home-study programs. Students in grades 5–8 are encouraged to participate. Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest,

originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness.

“We could not be prouder that a North Valley student has won at the state level for her essay,” said Jennifer Merrill, Ocotillo Chapter Regent. “We encourage all students to participate in the DAR American History Contest.”

Next year’s theme will be announced in the fall and contest instructions will be published online and sent to schools by participating DAR chapters.
