DVUSD Opens New Elementary West of I-17, Plans Classroom Additions in Norterra Schools BY KAREN GOVEIA

editor@valleyvibenews.com

F

ulfilling a longtime plan for an additional elementary school in the high growth area west of I-17, Deer Valley Unified School District’s newest elementary—Inspiration Mountain School—is set to open when school resumes Aug. 3 near 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road in the Stetson Valley development. The new school will initially serve just over 500 students in grades K-6, with the infrastructure in place to expand to a K-8 campus, said Jim Migliorino, deputy superintendent of fiscal services. The school has been in the district’s building plans since 2008, but as residential building ramped up again in the area, including the masterplanned community Aloravita, along with future development in the plans south of Loop 303, DVUSD began construction on the school last September. The addition of the new school frees up space at Stetson Hills School and Las Brisas Elementary— the district’s new gifted academy. “Since many students from Stetson

Valley are currently open enrolling to Stetson Hills, the opening of Inspiration Mountain is intending to free up space at Stetson Hills for new development that is happening in the northern attendance boundary of Stetson Hills,” Migliorino told Valley Vibe. The nearly 73,000-square-foot facility will have capacity for 965 students, and includes an administration building, three classroom buildings and a multipurpose building featuring a media center and maker space. The 14-acre site also includes shade structures along with baseball and soccer fields.

More Classroom Growth in Norterra Area With all of the active and future residential developments happening on the east side of I-17, a classroom expansion is planned at both Union Park School and Sonoran Foothills School. A permanent addition with four new classrooms at each school will begin construction this summer, with a targeted completion date of January 2023, Migliorino said. MORE SPACE, MORE AMENITIES Great Hearts Anthem moves its growing student population to a new 82,000-square-foot campus. BY KAREN GOVEIA

A

football field, a full outdoor basketball court, a large gymnasium, libraries for both the lower grades and upper grades, a drama stage and a lounge area for upperclassmen, are just some of the highlights Anthem Preparatory & Archway headmasters Teresa Clark and Zack Withers pointed out on a recent tour of the new campus.

When it opens Aug. 16, Anthem Preparatory Academy will be one of the first Great Hearts schools with a new architectural design that lends to a more classical look with large Roman columns throughout.

Following a decade of serving its K-12 students in leased spaces in Anthem, the new two-story 82,000-square-foot Great Hearts Anthem campus on 10 acres at the northeast corner of Gavilan Peak Parkway and Arroyo Norte Drive, will open for the start of the 202223 school year Aug. 16. “We’re looking forward to having a real home game on our own football field,” Withers said,

adding that home games had previously been held at another field in North Phoenix, as its former location only had a small practice field. The new campus will also allow for an additional section per grade at the K-5 level, bringing the school’s anticipated enrollment to 1,000. A wait list currently exists at all grade levels, but families are still encouraged to apply.

Q&A

Zack Withers Valley Vibe asked Anthem Prep Headmaster Zack Withers about returning to Anthem Prep and opening a brand new campus. VV Tell us a bit about yourself and your career with Great Hearts at both Anthem Prep and Glendale Prep. The floorplan allows for grades K-5 to be housed on the first floor and grades 6-12 on the upper level, with the classroom and laboratory space

thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of the public charter school’s classical liberal arts curriculum operated by Great Hearts Academies.

ZW I just finished my 11th year with the network. I have been at two different academies, Great Hearts Glendale Prep and Great Hearts Anthem Prep. I have served in many roles before becoming headmaster, and taught many different classes. An Arizona native, I began my Great Hearts career as a middle school history teacher in 2011 at Great Hearts Anthem Prep. I made the move to Glendale Prep in 2014 where I served as the assistant headmaster for three years. Last year I assumed the role of headmaster at Anthem for grades 6–12. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and Applied Ethics from Arizona State University and a Graduate Certificate in Classical Christian Studies from New Saint Andrew’s College. VV What led you to decide to return to Anthem Prep as headmaster? I have always fondly remembered my time

Zack Withers here as a teacher. It’s a great community, with great parents, students, and staff. People here are hungry for classical, liberal arts education.

VV Now that you've served in the headmaster role for a full school year, what have you learned and what are some of the highlights? ZW I have learned about all the effort it takes to rally a whole community together around a shared vision. It is critical to build relationships with all of the key stakeholders in the school so we can work together towards a goal. VV What are you most excited about with the new K-12 campus opening in the fall? ZW Having our own athletics facilities and being able to build our athletic culture is a big deal. Also, more space and room will improve our campus operations. The new two-story design includes a large gym, football/ soccer field, lab rooms, special education rooms, library, and more to serve students in grades K-12.

NVCA Preps to Build New High School BY KAREN GOVEIA

S

hortly after students return to school in August, North Valley Christian Academy will begin prepping for its next big milestone: A campus expansion to house grades 9–12. The private Christian academy along 27th Drive in North Phoenix plans to break ground in September on a new 13,700-squarefoot high school on the north end of the existing parking lot on its current campus, said Chris Schoenleb, head of school. The school’s parking lot will move to the vacant site the academy

Building plans include a STEM lab, science lab, theater, lecture halls and classrooms.

While an expansion has always been part of the plan, initial plans called for construction of a separate pre-school building, however Schoenleb told Valley Vibe the academy experienced a rapid growth spurt over the last two years in the lower grades, prompting the need to add an

First Day of School

The school which opened in its new location in 2017 has grown from 350 students to 600 enrolled for fall 2022.

Addressing traffic concerns from the community along North Valley Parkway, Schoenleb told Valley Vibe NVCA will implement staggered start/end times for its preschool, K-8, and 9-12 grade students when school resumes Aug. 10. In addition, NVCA will be bringing in off-duty police officers to direct traffic in the afternoons to help ease the congestion.

Ridgeline Moves to Former Anthem Prep Building BY VALLEY VIBE STAFF WRITERS

W

hile the search continues for land to build a campus of its own, Ridgeline Academy’s temporary middle and high school campus opens this fall in the building formerly occupied by Anthem Prep near Daisy Mountain Drive and Gavilan Peak Parkway. More space for its growing student body in grades 7–12, better classroom space, a dedicated gymnasium/drama and production space, a library, outdoor space and a sports field, along with space to house a new preschool and daycare this fall, are some of the highlights School Director Keven Barker pointed out. Ridgeline Academy, a tuition-free public charter school, had been operating its upper school out of a temporary campus along 41st Drive in Anthem for the last two years, but

has quickly outgrown the space. Barker said Ridgeline will sublet the campus from Anthem Prep for the 2022-23 school year, with a promise of two additional years to continue the lease. In addition to core classes, the high school offers honors and dual enrollment courses, foreign language, fine and performing arts, technology, forensics, social sciences and more. Sports offerings include football, volleyball, basketball, cross country, soccer, baseball, softball and track and field.

5 Ways to Save on Outdoor Water Use COMPILED BY VALLEY VIBE STAFF WRITERS

effective ways to conserve water.

Local irrigation specialist Adam Kopp, of Aloha Irrigation, offered the following tips to reduce outdoor water use.

T

he water shortage on the Colorado River prompted the City of Phoenix to activate the first stage of its drought management plan which emphasizes the need for voluntary water conservation by city customers. Voluntary reduction of water use in ways with minimal impact on lifestyles, is the goal of the city’s stage 1 water alert, announced on June 1. Since the majority of water use is outdoors, the city says adjustments in landscape watering is one of the easiest and most

1 Water Deeply and Infrequently

It’s a gradual process, but the goal is to create large root zones to make plants stronger and more water efficient with the ability to catch more rainwater when it does rain. Try this: if you’re currently running your system 30 minutes every day, adjust it to run one hour every other day; same amount of water, far better pattern. Once your yard is doing well running 2 hours every three days, try moving to 3 hours

every fifth day. Now you are using less water and benefiting the plant. Ideally a Pruning your plants less yard with can lower maintenance a good mix and water requirements. of desert adapted plants with large roots systems can be watered with a long 4-to 6-hour cycle once a week in the summer, every 10 to 15 days in the milder months and off for extended periods during the winter months. 2 Prune Less Pruning shrubs and groundcover only once or twice a year (best done in the cooler months) reduces maintenance needs and lowers plant water requirements. Plants allowed to grow naturally are much more water efficient. The green leaves not only make food through photosynthesis, but also keep the plant cooler by casting shade on itself. Leaves also store water and when pruned, the plant goes into recovery mode, requiring more water. 3 Plant a Tree According to

Energy.gov, the temperature

under a tree can be as much as 25 degrees cooler than the street. Any plants in that microclimate require considerably less water.

4 Remove Sod and Reduce

Ground Heat Excess hardscape and concrete contribute to a heat island. Removing unnecessary or unused hardscapes and replacing with groundcover or trees creates shade to cool the area. Cooler landscapes require less water. Removing grass or replacing it with artificial turf substantially reduces water usage.

5 Maintain Your Irrigation System

A failed irrigation valve will run 24/7 without showing signs until

your water bill shows the spike in usage. Rebuild valves every five years to prevent this problem. On systems older than 15 years, consider a new highefficiency irrigation system.

Planting trees creates more shade for nearby shrubs and groundcover, requiring less water usage.

2022 Directory PBA’s mission is to work together to increase each other’s businesses and to give back to the community that has helped our businesses grow. PBA is a business-networking group founded in 2002 by area business leaders. We also believe in giving back to our community by way of community service projects and fundraisers for local charities. Our focus in these activities is to help the area children and schools. Since its inception, the PBA has a growing membership. We provide a referral base to each other and, in turn, to our customers by being able to direct them to other high-quality area merchants and service providers whom we can personally recommend.
