Introduction

f ro m t h e S uperintendent creating great experiences I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been speechless in my entire life. The most recent was in September of 2012, when our acting Superintendent, Pastor Roger Valci, and our Chief Operations Officer, Dave Johnson, asked me to apply as a candidate for Superintendent of Valley Christian Schools. While my interests, convictions, and education were all preparing me for this career trajectory, I don’t think I would have considered applying if I hadn’t been prodded. Throughout the interview and vetting process, my dominant feelings shifted from “Am I ready for this big responsibility?” to “Lord, please let me do this…I want to be an agent of change…I want to shape a culture that glorifies you!”

For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe. He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing. Therefore love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. INTRODUCTION

Over the course of the school year, we have had the opportunity of addressing some key areas that directly align with our Strategic Plan. The first initiative is to enhance the spiritual formation process among our students. As the demographic of our school has changed over the last decade, we are increasingly becoming a culturally diverse institution that represents a multiplicity of ethnic heritages and hosts a growing number of international students. Adult diversity training and student awareness have been an ongoing theme of instruction over the last year to prepare our students to be godly citizens in a growing global community. Our second initiative is to advance academic excellence. Aside from some stellar new teachers added to our staff for the 20132014 school year, we began an intentional drive to equip all of our instructional staff with skills in differentiated instruction. Differentiation is a strategic methodology that maximizes student content delivery and skill development by discovering and satisfying the personal learning aptitudes of each child. Our middle and high school teachers spent the first half of their professional development days growing in differentiation skills in their professional learning community.


Our elementary school teachers spent the summer studying ways to improve their differentiation skills and anticipate spending the balance of the 2013-2014 year collaborating in their professional learning community meetings. All of our middle and high school teachers had the opportunity of becoming effective educational iPad instructors as they prepared for our 2013-2014 one-to-one iPad launch. The balance of our professional development meetings were devoted to the exploration of apps designed to deliver academic instruction and enhance student-learning experiences. The preparation of our IT department, our operations staff, our middle and high school administrators and teachers, and a small army of volunteer parents and students paved the way for an extremely smooth transition into 21st century learning experiences. In addition to these practical instructional improvements, we’ve also welcomed Michelle Fitch as our Director of Academic Assistance. Michelle will be working closely with Lori Cantrell, our Director of Admissions, to determine the bandwidth of academic assistance we can provide for our students navigating learning differences. Michelle will work closely with all of our instructors to provide the support necessary to ensure all of our students experience academic success. Our sixth initiative is to expand and improve our campus facilities. Aside from the many interior improvements executed all over our schools, we are constructing our new Worship and Performing Arts Center and our new Science Center. State of the art accouterments for both of these facilities are being procured to guarantee the best experiences in both the performing arts (initiative number three), and scientific discovery (initiative number two). A commitment to prepare our students to make a profound contribution to a rapidly evolving 21st century world motivates us to develop the whole child: physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. We’re redefining the educational experience while encouraging each student to discover God’s unique story in him or her. Our goal is to foster godly character in every young man and woman and to provide true and lasting excellence in education by creating great experiences.

makes It took a step of faith to come to Valley Christian High School my junior year, but I can boldly say that I enjoy every minute on this gorgeous campus, learning new things, sharing my gifts, and developing beautiful friendships. I honestly could not have had a smoother transition! I have so many opportunities to grow and serve here at Valley. I accompany the choir, play in the jazz combo, minister at the many concerts, and lead the worship band in chapel services. Last year, I composed a short piece of music for our original play, Cinderella, and snagged a lead role in The King and I! My favorite part about Valley is the close relationships with teachers and administrators. The teachers from my past school did not know my name, my background, my interests, or my strengths. At Valley, I can share life with teachers who I consider my mentors. I never enjoyed History until Ms. Ruff’s class. Her passion and drive for the past is so evident and strong, it overflows into her students! Learning from people who love and care about what they teach is so important. There is a beauty in knowing there are no age boundaries at Valley Christian Schools. I love to pour into those younger than me and watch them grow and succeed. I take pride in being a role model! As a senior, I am at peace with my future knowing Valley has prepared me well. The specialized attention I receive will certainly not be wasted as I confidently go out into the world and make a change. Koinonia simply means community and intimate spiritual fellowship. I lived most of my life without the rich blessing of Koinonia until my heart found it’s home in Christ. He led me to Valley Christian Schools eight years ago. As a former public school teacher, I love teaching at Valley’s Elementary School where I can encourage my students to walk in God’s ways. Every part of this community thrives to invest in children to learn, discover, and use their God-purposed gifts and strengths. My own two boys thrive at Valley not just academically, but socially and spiritually. They receive the immense blessings that come from being in a community that seeks excellence in the Lord. From the classroom teachers, auxiliary teachers, administrators, and child-care staff, my boys are taught, covered, loved and guided to respect, honor and love the Lord. They say it takes a village to raise a child. Our Valley “village” is made up of believers that pray, teach, love and guide our children. It’s the teacher who ministers not only to the child, but also to the parents; the mom who works in the cafeteria and takes care of a child who forgot to pack a spoon; the child-care staff who teaches stitchery while a child waits for his mom. It’s the teacher who gives a bag of gently used clothes to her former student; it’s the administrator who strikes a casual conversation with a child and makes him feel significant. It’s the subtle, defining moment when a teacher breathes in God-esteem with simple yet powerful words. It’s those keen eyes that see our children’s strengths and spiritual gifts and empowers them with confidence. It’s the secretary who discreetly takes a child to find something to wear when he forgot his chapel vest.

makes We are a big family with four teenagers, and we have been blessed to be part of the Valley Christian family for over ten years. Valley has assembled an amazing group of people— teachers, coaches, administrators, families—who love serving God by educating and developing students. It’s fair to say we have taken advantage of all that Valley Christian Schools has to offer. We have prayed with our kids’ teachers and principals and coaches. We’ve spent a lot of time at the field-side cheering on our kids and their teammates at games. We have served side by side with other families in auctions, fundraisers, sports banquets, school plays and Washington D.C. trips. In all that we do at Valley, we love connecting with other families as we all try together to raise our kids in today’s challenging world. Our children have been able to be involved with lots of activities at Valley that they might not have been able to at a larger school. Things such as student council, plays and musicals, service projects, soccer, football, wrestling and track. Dave has served as team physician since the varsity football program started in 2008, and it is exciting to see more and more success in all our athletic programs. On the academic side, our kids have benefited from small class sizes, with the individualized attention that just isn’t possible in a crowded classroom. Our kids have taken on the challenge of some tough academic and advanced placement courses, which has helped them prepare for the competitive world of college applications. The Bible classes have helped our kids to develop and defend a Christian worldview and to learn the purpose behind all the subjects they are studying. We consider ourselves blessed for all that Valley Christian Schools has meant to our family, and we hope and pray it’s the best foundation to see our children through the real world they’ll see in the future. –The Bell Family

My name is Jeff Gadd and I attended Valley Christian from preschool through high school graduation in 1992. Since graduating, I have been blessed with opportunities to stay involved at Valley Christian through running summer athletic camps, coaching many different sports and even doing some substitute teaching. When my wife, Jen and I were ready to put our kids in school, the choice was clear where they should go. We wanted our children to have the opportunity to learn in such a great community based on Christian principles. Now that our son is in First Grade and our daughter is in Kindergarten, we could not be more thrilled with their experiences and the relationships they are forming!

excellence R enovation & D evelopment A head Operations Top 20 List | It is my privilege to be serving my second year as Valley’s Chief Operations Officer. The Operations/ Service Team is responsible to both church and school in the following areas: Accounting | Human Resources (HR) | Admissions | Marketing | Information Technology (IT) | Audio/Visual/Lighting (AVL) | Facilities The Operations team has the dual task of maintaining and moving Valley Christian Schools in multiple areas. When things are running smoothly, when you see new people on campus, when you have a great wireless connection, when your check is cashed, or when you get shuffled from one building to another, think of the Operations/Service Team and pray for us. This last year has been packed full of progress, and the pace is not slowing down. It’s easiest to list our achievements through a “David Letterman” style “Top 10 List” but we’ll bump it up to 20 including two large projects scheduled for completion before the end of the 2013-2014 school year. Valley Christian High School enrolls approximately 259 students in 9th through 12th grade. The average class size is eighteen.

ACADEMICS | VCHS awards a high school diploma based upon requirements for admission to the California State University system, the University of California, and private four-year colleges and universities. A minimum of 250 units is required for graduation, which includes all course requirements stipulated by the California State Department of Education. Course credits must include Algebra II and a physical science as well as a biological science.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY CRITERIA FOR MEMBERSHIP Scholarship | Students who rank in the top 25% of their class meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Service | This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. VA L L E Y C H R I S T I A N E L E M E N T A RY Our Theme Each year Valley Christian Elementary School has a chapel theme that is carried throughout the year and becomes our focus in the classroom, on the playground, in chapel and in the hearts of our students. The theme this year is Running God’s Race, based on Hebrews 12:1-2. Our Service Projects Our students are continually involved in helping those who find themselves in need of extra help and/or encouragement such as: • Operation Christmas Child • Children’s Emergency Food Bank • Victims of catastrophic events • Music productions to Senior Centers Our Activities • Organized sports during recess times. • A full time Activities Director to coordinate before, during, and after school activities to include all students. • Fun, fun, fun!

The primary goal of curriculum is to teach correct information about God. It is by knowing God’s attributes, His acts of creation, and His purposes in creating, that we come to know God. The Visual Arts program on the Valley Christian campus focuses on building creative expression and study that brings students into a greater knowledge of and appreciation for Our Divine Creator. KEVIN CAREY | DIRECTOR OF PERFORMING ARTS Theatre Arts Highlights of the Theater Arts Program include a 22-year history of dramatic arts with multiple productions staged each year. Our UC-approved VPA Drama course for 9th through 12th grade focuses on Theater History and Practice.
