It seems that many of us have been misquoting wellknown phrases for years without even realizing it. This week Tidbits does what we can to at least set the record straight on some of the more common ones  we've all used at one time or another. • We’re all familiar with Murphy’s Law, which states, “If something can go wrong, it will.” But did you know there really was a Murphy that the statement is attributed to? He was Edward A. Murphy, a U.S. Air Force engineer who was working on a rocketsled experiment in the late 1940s. The project involved mounting 16 accelerator sensors to measure G-forces on a pilot's body. There were two ways the sensors could be attached and his assistant installed all of them backwards. When the mistake caused the entire experiment to fail, the story made headlines. In a follow-up interview, Murphy, who was clearly disgusted with his helper, stated, “If there are two or more ways to do something, and just one of those ways can result in a catastrophe, then that's the way he will do it!”

• One of the most often-misquoted lines in movie history is “Play it again, Sam” from the 1942 film Casablanca. Most folks believe that leading man Humphrey Bogart uttered the famous phrase. The pianist Sam is being asked to play the song “As Time Goes By.” Ingrid Bergman’s character Ilsa Lund says, “Play it once, Sam. For old times’ sake.” When Sam objects, she repeats, “Play it, Sam.” Misquotes: Turn to page 3

and crocodiles is their environment. Alligators dwell in fresh water, such as ponds, rivers, wetlands, lakes, and swamps, while crocodiles tend to make their home in salt water. Crocodiles in the wild are found all over the world while alligators are only found in the US and China. An alligator’s nostrils point upward, so they can breathe while the rest of the body is submerged in water. Crocodiles are more aggressive than alligators.

• Although they seem to have a reputation for attacking humans, alligators are actually quite solitary and very rarely do they go after humans, usually only when provoked, cornered, or when protecting their young. Their diet consists of fish, turtles, snakes, birds, and small mammals. Occasionally, alligators will also dine on other alligators.

MENTION THIS AD FOR

Although it may seem minor, Neil Armstrong's actual quote after his first step on the moon in 1969 was, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." It has been misquoted for decades as "That's one small step for man..." Radio static was the reason the "a" was omitted from the original transcription.

• Have you heard folks say, “there's no rest for the wicked”? The accurate wording is found in Isaiah 57:21, “There is no peace, says my God, to the wicked.” And lots of us say, “Money is the root of all evil,” when in fact, the correct wording in I Timothy 6:10 is “the love of money is the root of all evil…” • In the 1995 film Apollo 13, Tom Hanks in the role of Commander Jim Lovell says, “Houston, we have a problem.” During the 1970 mission, Apollo 13 astronaut Jack Swigert was the first to say a similar phrase, “Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here.” NASA in Houston replied, “This is Houston. By Samantha Weaver

* It was 20th-century English novelist E.M. Forster who made the following sage observation: “We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” * If you’re a pogonophobe, the rise of hipsterism in recent years is not good news -anyone afraid of beards isn’t going to get far in public these days without confronting one. * For centuries, the wrinkling of skin on fingers and toes when they soak in water was cause for puzzlement (among those who take the time to wonder about such things). Researchers believe they’ve found the answer: Traction. Like the treads on a tire, the wrinkles of wet skin help improve the gripping power of our extremities; for our ancestors, this made it easier to walk and grip objects during wet seasons. * You might be surprised to learn that immigration was not a national issue until the late 19th century. Up until 1890, when President Benjamin Harrison declared Ellis Island to be the first federal immigration center, foreigners who wanted to live in America were handled on a state-by-state basis. * John Sylvan is known as the creator of Keurig coffee pods, used in abundance throughout the world these days. Despite the success of his inventions, however, he refuses to use them himself; he says that he abhors the effect the non-recyclable, nonbiodegradable pods have on the environment.

A Shoemaker Will Save Your Sole and So Much More

To some people, a cobbler is a lovely fruit dessert best served warm. To® others, it is a shoemaker who repairs shoes -- an almost forgotten trade. But that’s changing. Suddenly, shoe repair by Mary Hunt is coming back. Big time. Sales of luxury goods are down, but it’s a good time for people who repair them. Many high-end cobblers, tailors and jewelers have seen a spike in business from frugal customers, thanks to a trend toward fixing goods rather than replacing them. We’re quickly moving from a disposable society to one that’s learning to mend and make do. According to Randy Lipson, third-generation cobbler and owner of Cobblestone Shoe Repair in St. Louis, Missouri, shoe-repair shops nationwide (of which there are reportedly only about 7,500 remaining -- half as many as a decade ago) are reporting a 20 to 45 percent surge in business. Things are beginning to shift as consumers are learning to make do. And for many, that means getting shoes that fit fixed. Not long ago, I seized an opportunity to sit down with Lipson and I learned a lot, not only about the value of repairing shoes rather than replacing them, but also the fact that a shoe-repair shop does more than just repair shoes.

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

can run around $20 depending on where the shop is located. A complete recondition can run as high as $100. But if we’re talking about a $300 pair of shoes, that’s a great value because it means another 10 or 15 years for those shoes. When you think of the cost per wear, repairing shoes rather than replacing them becomes a great value. They’re even better than new. EC: Other than shoes, what items do you repair? RL: We offer repairs on handbags, luggage, dog collars, belts (we shorten belts all the time, in a way that cannot be detected), and saddles and bridles, too. If you have anything made of leather that needs some TLC, take it to a shoe repair shop. EC: Where can we find reputable shoe repair shops in our local areas? RL: You can find a national store locator on the Shoe Service Institute of America website. Just type in your location and you’ll be on your way! A question to you, my readers: Do you know of a great shoe repair shop? Tell us about it! Give a shout out to your friendly neighborhood cobbler! * * * Mary invites questions, comments and tips at mary@everydaycheapskate.com, or c/o Everyday Cheapskate, 12340 Seal Beach Blvd., Suite B-416, Seal Beach, CA 90740. get migraines have a family history of the malady. If one parent has migraines, a child has a 50% chance of also having the condition, and a 75% chance if both parents are afflicted.

MIGRAINES In observance of National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month coming up in June, Tidbits shares some information on this serious health issue that effects so many. • It’s estimated that about 12% of the U.S. population, approximately 36 million Americans, experience migraine headaches. It is considered one of the Top 20 most disabling medical illnesses in the world. • Research suggests that migraines might be caused in part by changes in the level of serotonin. When serotonin levels fall, blood vessels dilate and the swelling brings on the migraine. • Who gets migraines? The condition is three times more common in women, with 30% of women suffering over a lifetime. It is most common in the ages from the 20s through the 50s. Migraines seem to occur most between the ages of 35 and 45, yet, they can also affect both children and the elderly. • Migraines affect someone in one of every four American households. Most experience a few attacks per month, but 3% of the population experiences chronic migraines, with headaches occuring at least 15 days of each month for at least six months. Eighty percent of those who

• About 20% of those who get migraines experience an “aura” of visual symptoms shortly before the migraine strikes. A person might see flashing lights, jagged or wavy lines, dots, and/ or experience tunnel vision or blind spots. Some might even experience hallucinations. • Several things can trigger a migraine, even a change in the weather! A variance in barometric pressure, humidity, or temperature can bring it on. One study indicates that winds in excess of 23 mph increase the risk of migraines.

Page 5

off migraine attacks. Those who exercise for 40 minutes three times per week often experience less headaches. Others claim that taking Vitamin E and ginkgo biloba helps prevent migraines, while others claim that anti-depressants help to reduce the frequency by regulating the brain's chemical levels. • Migraines are best controlled as soon as the warning signs appear. Physicians recommend keeping a journal as a way to track the triggers. Understanding one's personal migraine patterns and symptoms, they say, will be key to controlling them.  CLIP AND SAVE

• Certain foods seem to bring on a migraine in some individuals, especially foods containing nitrates (found in hot dogs and lunch meats). The substance tyramine found in aged cheese, smoked fish, and soy products is another culprit, as well as the flavor enhancer MSG. Many report that eating avocados, lentils, and canned meats increases the likelihood of a headache. • Drinking alcohol, not getting enough sleep, stress, hunger, dehydration, and hormonal changes can also induce a migraine, and even a sudden light glare or certain fragrances. • In ancient times when migraines were unexplainable, a practice called trepanation was used as early as 7,000 B.C., which involved drilling holes into the skull. In their reasoning it was a way to allow evil spirits to escape. Unbelievably, trepanation was still being practiced up until the 17th century. • Although walking and climbing stairs can worsen the pain, regular workouts seem to help ward

However, there is better news on the way. “Hell on Wheels” still has the back-seven episodes of its fifth and final season yet to air, which will most likely be sometime this summer, although AMC has yet to announce a date. Dog Talk with Uncle Matty By Matthew Margolis

Creators News Service

Till Dog Do You Part For the longest time and for reasons that escape me, this column used to be titled “Dogs, Cats and Other People.” Not a week went by where I wasn’t lambasted by some flummoxed cat person with a bone to pick over my gross neglect of felines. Who could blame ‘em? Bad title. And now, with the column at last more aptly named “Dog Talk With Uncle Matty,” I finally have cause to advise a cat person:

“Dear Uncle Matty: Here’s my problem, and I hope you can help me out. My wife recently said to me, ‘We need to get a dog.’ But if you feed that through the translation matrix, the actual thing she said to me was, ‘We should get a dog so I can dump 100 percent of the work and care of a dog on you.’ “The main issue is that I hate dogs. I’m a cat person. I love cats and have three. They don’t smell bad, they cuddle in my lap, and they sleep 16 hours a day. Before I was married, a then-girlfriend of mine and I got a dog. I ended up hating the thing because, as a puppy, he soiled the house at every step. As an adult dog he destroyed everything in sight. I know, you say ‘dogs need training.’ And they do. But I’m not the person to give the dog training, as you can see. My wife, who wants to get a dog, also wants to dump all of the work on me, someone who hates dogs. Do you see what’s going to happen next? “How can I convince my wife that I don’t have the time for a dog?”

My advice: Show her this letter. Print it out or cut it out of the newspaper, and leave it on her pillow. Tell her to give as much weight to your words as to mine, and Uncle Matty says under no circumstances should either you or your wife get a dog. That is unless your marriage vows were “for better or worse, till dog do we part.” My intent is not to be unfeeling toward his wife’s desires, but rather to spare a pup from the cold environment of an absentee “mother” and a cat-loving “father.” If animal adoptions were as carefully considered as human adoptions, these two CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

Where Are Medicare Hospital Ratings? If you had been hoping to go to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services website and take a look at its new hospital ratings, you’ll be disappointed. It doesn’t exist yet. The very day before the site was to launch, it was delayed. It seems that Congress, along with the hospital industry, pushed to stop the launch in its tracks. For the survey, hospitals are rated for more than 100 measures of care, but the information is often confusing. (Or perhaps they’re afraid the information will make them look bad.) For example, hospitals objected to a Medicare patient death rate being known to women trying to choose a hospital for having a baby. Another objection was that a hospital’s death rate might be because the patients are low income. Hospitals called 60 senators and more than 200 representatives and asked for the delay so the information can be reassembled. We have ratings on CMS for various

No you can’t. Before I explain, let me tell you right up front that you really need to think about withdrawing that Social Security claim you filed last year. I am normally not a big fan of advising people to withdraw a previously filed Social Security claim. But your situation seems tailor-made to employ that strategy. So now let me go over all the rules that will help you understand why a claims withdrawal might be your best option. The earnings penalty rules say that if you are under age 66 and working and earning more than $15,720 per year, then an amount equal to half of anything you earn over that limit must be withheld from your Social Security checks. I am 64 years old. I retired last year and decided to file for my Social Security in November. I got my first check in December. But now I’ve been offered a job that will pay me a rather substantial amount of money for short periods of time. Specifically, I would make $40,000 in May of this year and then another $40,000 in October. I realize that $80,000 is well over the earnings penalty limit of $15,720. But since I am only working two months of the year, can I keep my Social Security checks for the other 10 months?

I am a 55-year-old woman, and except for being overweight, I am in excellent health. I exercise daily, sleep well at night and have no complaints whatsoever. I get about six or seven hours of sleep a night, and am a naturally early riser. I do not drink either tea or coffee (don’t like the taste), but I have found that if I take one half of a 200mg caffeine pill immediately on arising, it does wonders for my mood and productivity. On some days I take a second pill in the early afternoon, and rarely, a third in the evening, though never later than 6 p.m. Is there anything wrong with this? I’ve found that many people who drink several cups of coffee a day seem to look askance at me because I get my caffeine in a pill. -- A.C. ANSWER: Some people drink coffee for the caffeine; some people drink decaf to avoid the caffeine; most people like both the taste and the caffeine effect. You are unusual in only wanting the caffeine effect. A 16-ounce cup of coffee at a large chain contains 330 mg of caffeine. I don’t see anything wrong with taking caffeine pills the way you are. However, some people won’t sleep well if taking as much as you are. ***

ANSWER: Estrogen-associated migraine is common. However, it usually is the drop in estrogen that triggers the migraine. That’s the reason many women get migraines around the time of their periods, as estrogen levels normally decline then. For many women, migraines get worse years before menopause -- and by “menopause,” I mean when periods stop altogether. As the periods become erratic, and sleep cycles are interrupted by hot flashes, migraines become worse, as they have in your daughters. However, once periods stop entirely, episodic migraines usually get dramatically better on their own. During the erratic time before menses completely stop, estrogen pills, cream or an insertable ring can be used to maintain a more constant estrogen level, which usually improves the headaches. This can be slowly tapered off when the periods could be expected to be finished. ***

Value Is in the Cards

Enclosed is a photo of a set dishes with playing-card faces imprinted on them. My mother used them at her card-club luncheons. There are eight each of cups, saucers and plates. As you can see in the photo, the cup is the shape of a club, the plates are shaped like hearts, and the cream pitcher, sugar bowl and platter are diamond-shaped. The dishes are decorated with the images of a king, a queen and a joker against a white background. My mom used them in the 40s. They are so unique. The markings on the back of the plates say, “Casino by American Limoges China Company.” I would never part with this set, but would like to know if it has any value.

when he exclaimed, “Beam us up, Mr. Scott!” The animated “Star Trek” series, which ran for two seasons in 1973 – 1974, did have the line, “Beam us up, Scotty!” and the 1986 movie Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home included, “Scotty, beam me up.” In the original series, Mr. Scott was played by actor James Doohan, who entitled his 1996 biography “Beam Me Up, Scotty!” • The well-known phrase “A rose by any other name smells just as sweet” has its origins in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” But the actual quote reads, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet.” • Speaking of Shakespeare, when we see images of witches stirring a cauldron, the phrase “Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble” comes to mind. The correct phrase, from Act 4, Scene 1 of “Macbeth,” is actually “Double, double, toil and trouble.” • Fans of the rock group Led Zeppelin will recognize the words in the first verse of “Stairway to Heaven”, “There’s a lady who’s sure, all that glitters is gold.” The chorus in the Smash Mouth song “All Star” also includes the phrase “All that glitters is gold.” In actuality, this is another Shakespeare misquote that correctly reads, “All that glisters is not gold,” spoken by the Prince of Morocco in “The Merchant of Venice.” 
