• When Smiley’s platoon came upon a nervouslooking man in a suspicious car, he ordered the man at gunpoint to step out of the vehicle. The man hesitated but got out with his hands raised. A moment later the man detonated a massive suicide bomb. The last thing Smiley remembers seeing was, “that man’s face, and his hands in the air.” The explosion sent small shards of metal through his left eye into his brain, also damaging his right eye socket. Of the eight men in the armored vehicle, Smiley was the only soldier injured by the blast.
