• If you’re asked how many Hawaiian Islands there are, you might say seven. There actually are seven main islands, all of which are inhabited. However, the grand total of islands in the Hawaiian chain is 136. Some are small islets, while others are coral islands circling a lagoon. The “Big Island,” Hawaii, is the largest of all with 4,028 square miles, and it’s the only island containing active volcanoes. Oahu is the third largest of the major islands, but it’s the most populated, with that number upwards of 950,000.

• The craft was coated with a specially-developed white paint that reflected the intense heat created during supersonic flight. The extreme speeds caused such intense heat on its surface that the plane would expand six to ten inches during prolonged supersonic flight. Even the windows were hot during flight, unlike the cold of a normal high altitude jet plane.

• The flights carried a nine-member crew of two pilots, a flight engineer and six flight attendants. While the usual training time for pilots to fly a normal commercial jet was about eight weeks, Concorde pilots’ training required a full seven months. Seating capacity for the aircraft ranged from 92 to 128, but it wasn’t just passengers the Concorde carried. Commodities such as precious metals and vital human organs destined for medical transplants were often loaded onboard for rapid overseas delivery.

• The Concorde was designed and built by a team of British and French engineers in the late 1960s. The plane was named as such because the word “Concorde” means “agreement.” It was built with powerful Rolls Royce engines, a sleek, swept-wing design, and a unique "droop nose," designed so pilots could lower the front cone for better visibility during takeoffs, landings and taxiing procedures.

5. How many days are in a fortnight?

For 27 years, the Concorde shuttled passengers at a speed up to twice the speed of sound. Tidbits invites you to check out the facts on this supersonic passenger jet.

1. How many symphonies did composer Ludwig Van Beethoven write?

CONCORDE THE

• In 1996, the Concorde shattered all records for commercial transatlantic crossing, when the flight from New York to London was completed in just two hours and 53 minutes.

• The oldest person ever to fly on the Concorde was 105-year-old Eva Woodman, a nursing home resident who had never before been on a plane. For her birthday in 1998, Eva (who was 11 years old in 1903 when the Wright Brothers made the first powered flight) was treated to a 90-minute flight aboard the plane. She arrived back at the nursing home to a party complete with a Concorde-shaped cake.

• There were 20 original Concorde jets, 18 of which remain on public display at aerospace museums around the world.

• This kind of supersonic travel was definitely not for those of moderate income. Passengers paid dearly for the speed and luxury, more than 30 times the price of a regular ticket. In 1997, those flying from New York to London paid $7,995 for a round-trip ticket -- about $14,700 in today's money.

3. How many cups of water are there in one U.S. gallon?

• Several factors contributed to the end of the Concorde – the Paris crash, rising fuel prices, aging planes, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The supersonic jet’s last commercial flight was in October, 2003, from New York to London. In total, the Concorde fleet had logged 50,000 flights and 2.5 million passengers.

• The word supersonic merely means that the jet could fly faster than the speed of sound. In fact, the Concorde SST had a take-off speed of 250 mph and a cruising speed of 1,340 mph. The speed of sound, depending on the temperature of the atmosphere, is about 760 mph, or 1100 feet per second.

• The first flights took off in January 1976, with a British Airways jet flying from London to Bahrain, and an Air France plane flying from Paris to Rio de Janeiro. The jets flew at an altitude of 60,000 feet, over 11 miles high! At that altitude passengers could easily see the curvature of the Earth on the horizon.

1. GEOGRAPHY: How many inde pendent countries are

2. How many chemical elements are on the periodic table?

• In July 2000, a Concorde flight bound for New York from Paris tragically crashed and burned on takeoff from the Paris airport. The crash, which killed all 109 people aboard plus another four on the ground, was caused by a metal shard on the runway, bursting one of the main tires, which sent fragments into one of the Concorde’s engines, igniting a fuel tank.

4. How many states formed the Confederate States of America during the Civil War?

have played in the most World Series, with 40 appearances and 27 wins, the most recent in 2009. The St. Louis Cardinals have won 11 of their 19 Series appearances. Only one team, the Seattle Mariners, has never played in a World Series. The Blue Jays are the only franchise from outside the U.S. to appear and win a World Series, taking the title in 1992 and 1993.

• A baby is born with about 300 bones, but by adulthood will have just 206. Why is that? A baby’s bones are mostly cartilage rather than solid bone. As the baby grows, some of the bones fuse together, and much of the cartilage turns into bone, a process known as ossification, reducing the number of bones from 300 to 206. The 206 bones make up about 15% of an adult’s body weight.

The dimples reduce the aerodynamic drag on the ball, resulting in the ball flying a longer distance. The spin of the ball is also affected by the diameter of the dimples as well as their shape. Some golf balls have round dimples, while others are hexagonal.

But if you put that dollar into a retirement account instead, you get to deposit the entire $1. You get to invest the 25 cents that belongs to the government. * Statistically, the most dangerous job one can hold in America is president.

The beauty of an IRS-approved retire ment account is that you get to save pretax dollars. It’s no secret that what you see in your paycheck is not the full amount you earned.

BAM! Just like that you owe 10% penalty on the entire $15,000. Then the entire $15,000 is imme diately reported to the IRS as ordinary income upon which you owe federal and state (if any) in come tax. Your federal tax rate is 28%, and since you live in California you must also pay 10% to the state. Do the math: 14,800 x (10% + 28% + 10% = 48%) = $7,200. That’s what you owe in taxes. Can’t pay? Then you’ll have to agree to a payment plan with the feds and the state tax board -- plus interest, of course. Ka-ching!

Here’s my suggestion: Don’t! Do not even think about it. The money in your retirement ac count will become your safety net in the future. Live as if the money is not even there. Just save it and forget it.

More people are taking loans from their retirement accounts (401(k), 403(b), etc.) than ever, simply because they can. Here’s the prob lem: seeing one’s retirement account as a sav ings account, or worse, a personal ATM machine. That’s so ridiculous I cannot even tell you. Sure, it’s your money, but it’s not your money now. It’s for later. It is out of your reach, so you need to get it out of your mind.

In fact, the amount in your paycheck is shrinking, and many of our elected officials are trying to shrink that even further by increasing taxes. are lots of reasons not to borrow from a retirement account, but I think the biggest is the rule that should you leave your job for ANY reason, that loan becomes all due and payable. You’ll have a couple of weeks to come up with the money. And if you can’t? That loan will be automatically converted to a cash withdrawal. Between the penalties and taxes you will owe on it right away, it could cost you up to 50%. Gone. Vanished into thin air. That is just too risky.

• The Pony Express Company was the idea of three owners of a freight business, who proposed a faster method of transporting mail between St. Joseph and the California Gold Country, a journey of roughly 1,800 miles. Although critics said it was impossible, William Russell, William Waddell, and Alexander Majors claimed that the mail could be moved across the distance in just ten days.

Joseph by two days, proving that the route really covered in only ten days.

• There have been nine movies made about the company, with the first a silent film in 1925, followed by Frontier Pony Express, starring Roy Rogers in 1939. A popular television series, The Young Riders, ran from 1989-1992, starring Stephen Baldwin and Josh Brolin. 

• In May 1860, the Paiute Indian War broke out, resulting in an interruption of mail delivery. Several Pony Express stations were attacked by the tribe, with 16 employees killed and 150 horses stolen. The attacks cost the Company about $75,000 in addition to the loss of life.

• In April 1860, the Pony Express made its inaugural run, with a rider leaving St. Joseph at the same time one left Sacramento. The westbound rider made the journey in ten days, beating the eastbound rider’s arrival in St.

• The initial postage rate for the Pony Express was $5 per ½ ounce. It was later lowered to $2.50, then dropped to its lowest in July 1861, of $1. The rider’s pouch could hold 20 lbs. of mail. In addition, his saddle bag contained a water sack, a Bible, a horn to alert the relay station of his arrival in order to have a fresh horse ready, and a pistol with ammunition. • They hired 120 young men, each weighing less than 125 lbs., to ride between 75 and 100 miles, whether day or night, rain or shine, before being switched out. August 28 is set aside to celebrate Pony Express Day, honoring the mail service between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramaneto, California during the 1860s. Read on to learn more about this shortlived enterprise in America’s history.

• During its 18 months of operation, the Pony Express delivered about 35,000 letters between Missouri and California. The owners hoped to obtain a mail delivery contract from the U.S. Government, but it never materialized. When the first transcontinental telegraph line was instituted in October 1861, the days of the Pony Express were over. During that time, it had grossed $90,000 and lost $200,000. Its assets were later sold to Wells Fargo for $1.5 million.

• At any one time there were about 80 Pony Express riders along the trail traveling east or west, averaging a speed of about 10 mph.

Random Acts of Kindness Day

I have some concerns about my 18-month-old American Staffordshire, “Duke,” and my two children, who are 4 and 5. To night, the kids were playing with the dog, and my 4-year-old boy pinched and teased the dog and obviously hurt him. My daughter was giv ing him a big cuddle at the same time -- and was probably also being a little rough. The dog lunged at her with a huge bark, which to me sounded like an aggressive warning as if to say I’ve had enough. Is that a normal response to pain from a dog, or is my dog a time bomb waiting to go off?

For example, my interior design philoso phy, first and foremost, is dictated by a regional approach. Interiors in Palm Springs, California, should not look like interiors in New York, and vice versa. Interior selections with regard to materials, finishes and colors should reflect the location of the project. A designer should always endeavor to capture the nuances of place, without hitting kitsch.

Selecting an interior designer to help with the design of your home is tricky. A bit of research is required to see if you are a good fit. A meet ing should take place -- not unlike speed dating -- in which basic questions such as stylistic prefer ences, scope of work, work ethic and budgets are discussed by both parties. Most important is your approach and/or your design philosophy.

Hence, the borrowed space at the rec center (which had to cancel the Tots and Mommy Workout Hour ... something about a stay-at-home father objecting to the name of the class).

For an aspiring chef, it might be a culinary haven. For a high-stress businessperson, it may be a spa-like atmosphere. For an art collector, it may be a place to house art. It is crucial for the de signer to know this linchpin of the design; in the end, the homeowner gets to live with an interior they truly enjoy, and the designer can walk away knowing they have done their very best for them.

1. Decorate to please yourself -- not your neighbors or friends.

The Art DESIGNofbyJosephPublillones

The letter writer’s questions are off-base. “What is the best way to discipline this type of be havior?” Whose behavior? The kids’? The dog’s? The parents’? And “discipline” isn’t the ingredi ent that will bring this dish together. Education is what’s missing. These kids have not been taught how to properly handle and play with a dog.

“home” mean to you?

It’s most important to find out what “home” means to one’s clients and to oneself. The con cept of home captures both tactile things and abstract emotions. The best compliment is when guests and visitors cannot describe why they feel so good in your home. It is the “it” factor. Home is about a feeling. It’s a place of comfort, which is the ultimateBeluxury.candid with your designer about what you would like the most important function of your home to be. For one family, it might be comfort.

by Matilda Charles© King Features Synd., Inc.

9. Take risks. It’s your home and your rules.

5. Be bold.

Steer away from designers providing a “signature” look. The best interior designers can work in almost any style. Each home and project should be a reflection of a homeowner’s taste and lifestyle. Each project is and should be different -different in architecture, different in style, different in client requirements. Therefore, the design re sults are never rubber-stamped, never the same. A designer’s role should be to act as a moderator, editor and facilitator of design.

2. Buy the very best art you can afford -over a long period of time.

It’s important to understand the differ ence between aggression and a normal reaction to provocation. Duke might very well thrive in an environment without small children -- or even with children who know how to properly handle a dog. A professional trainer or behaviorist can help make that determination. But if Duke is to stay in this home, everyone needs some good positive train ing.

Woof!

That is not the dog’s fault. And it’s not the kids’ fault. This kind of behavior toward an animal is unacceptable -- even abusive -- and many parents don’t even realize it. Kids are allowed to flat-out abuse the family dog, and their parents have this notion that because he’s the family pet, he won’t react.

There was a knowing nod from the coach and the admonishment: “We’ll be taking this nice and easy. Do not push yourselves. If you need to stop and rest, then do that. Nobody will judge you.” He cast a fierce look around the room as he said that.

The senior center commandeered a large space at the rec center to use in an experiment. Their goal: to determine if we actually meant what we said about not coming in for exercise classes in a cramped senior center space where we’re all breathing on one another. Find more room, we’d said, room to spread out.

The routine the coach put us through was a perfect combination of nearly everything, start ing with mild stretching, moving into a few minutes of yoga poses, some cha-cha steps, a few ballet moves, leg lifts, toe touches and more.

3. Accessorize with few items. It’s best if each item is larger than a football.

6. Leave room for changes: accessories, art and the occasional piece of furniture.

As a parent, you have a duty to protect your children. The best way to do that is through intel ligent prevention. And the most effective way to prevent a dog from biting your kids is to teach your kids how to appropriately handle a dog.

took a handout at the door as we left, instructions for doing these exercises at home in case we didn’t like the rec center setup. But I have a feeling we’re all going to show up next week. It’s the first bit of normal in two years.

10. Read “Home: A Short History of an Idea” by Witold Rybczynski as well as “Geography of Home: Writings on Where We Live” by Akiko Busch.

Some takeaway tips:

Why is a dog expected to tolerate this? Where is it written that “family” can treat a dog however they want and the dog will just put up with it? Everyone has a breaking point.

7. An inviting room can even make food taste better.8.Always add your favorite color to any room. It’ll make you feel good.

Oh, yeah. And did you know agents are also giving undocumented workers a Wells Fargo Visa card, interest-free mortgage loans, a new car and a box of chocolates? I mean, c’mon folks, get real. This isn’t happening, and I hope all my readers are smart enough to realize that.

third “big change” the newspaper sto ry talked about is the increase in the retirement age. I mean, c’mon: is this news? Absolutely not. The law increasing the retirement age from 65 to 67 was passed in 1984. And it’s been gradually phased in over the past 40 years. We have reached the point now where the retirement age is 66 and 6 months for people born in 1957, and those folks will be reaching that “full retirement age” in 2023. But I challenge the editors of that newspaper to find me one reader and potential retiree born in 1957 who didn’t know that was his or her full retirement age.

2022 CREATORS.COM TRIVIANEWSFRONT™ PRESENTS NEWSFRONTANSWERS TRIVIA

And finally, the fourth “big change” is the increase in the earnings penalty limits for Social Security recipients under their full retirement age who might be working part time. The limit is cur rently $19,560. For every two dollars you earn over that limit, one dollar is withheld from your Social Security benefits. But once again, the update to the limit is an automatic increase that has happened ev ery year for the past 30 years or so. It’s not a big deal. It’s not a big change. And frankly, it’s just not news.

I know some folks like to think of the fed eral government as this one huge, monolithic en tity in which all employees are just cookie-cutter bureaucrats following the mantra of an appointed leader. That’s just not how it works. There are hun dreds of federal agencies, each with their own staff and with their own mission. For example, you obvi ously would not go to the Department of Agricul ture to file your federal tax return; you would go to the Internal Revenue Service. You would not go to the FBI to try to get a national park pass; you would go to the National Park Service. And you would not go to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol to get a Social Security number; you would go to the Social Security Administration. (And by the way, if you entered this country illegally and you tried to get a Social Security card from the SSA, you simply wouldn’t get one!)

Prophylactic antibiotics are not the firstline treatment to prevent recurrent infection. Urologists, the specialists for the urinary tract, will evaluate the urinary system to try to identify a correctible condition. I trust your urologist has considered other options before prescribing your current treatment.

DEAR DR. ROACH: As a 90-yearold man in mostly good health, I have been taking one Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole/trim ethoprim) pill per day for several years now, preventatively for recurrent urinary tract infections. I am very pleased with this suc cessful treatment. However, my urologist has mentioned that I might have to relinquish the Bactrim at some point without a full explanation of why. Is there any danger in the habitu al use of Bactrim? -- J.M.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about smoking. I smoke cigarettes, but now I want to stop. I want to use Velo to break this habit. Are Velo pouches harmful for health? Are there any side effects? -- Z.

The largest organization is the American Legion. Across the country are more than 12,000 posts and approximately two million members. The Legion is to be thanked for the GI Bill of Rights, which has helped many veterans get a college or trade education and a home with a low mortgage rate.

ANSWER: Both men and women who get recurrent urinary infections are sometimes treated with prophylactic antibiotics, such as the sulfa-based antibiotic you are taking. The main risk is not toxicity of the medicine, it is that you might acquire a bacterial strain that is resistant to the antibiotic treatment. You are fortunate that you have gone several years without this devel oping, and you may go many more successfully, but other people periodically need to change the antibiotic they are taking.

ANSWER: Velo is a brand of synthetic nicotine (there are many now) designed simply to provide nicotine without smoking. The nicotine is derived from tobacco, but there is no actual tobacco in the product. The health risk is much lower compared to smoking tobacco, and much less than chewing tobacco. They come in loz enges and pouches (which are placed under the lip); many are flavored. Nicotine does not cause cancer, but there is still potential to harm your health, especially in the mouth, particularly for gum disease.Unlike nicotine replacement products, such as patches, gum and inhalers, that are intended to help people gradually taper off and then quit smoking, these nicotine products are intended to be used long-term. These should never be used by a person who does not smoke or use other forms of nicotine, as nicotine can make a person very ill if they are not accustomed to it. It can cause nausea and vomiting, but also abdominal pain, headache, and irritation in the mouth.

Maybe if we start telling people the brain is an app they'll start using Sometimesit. people tell me to stop living in the past, but the music was so much better then.

But the Legion has done much more: This vital organization has also donated $1 million to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and sponsored a study on the effects of Agent Orange. If you want to explore the Legion, read more online at www. legion.org

There is not enough information to say how effective a nicotine product like Velo would be to help you quit smoking. For people who successfully quit smoking but continue to need nicotine, long-term nicotine is not ideal, but it still has far fewer health risks than smoking.

The DAV has 26 transition service offices, helping veterans make the oftentimes difficult change to civilian life by providing benefits coun seling.

You should review these notices to see if your plan will continue to meet your health care needs in 2023. If you are dissat isfied with any upcoming changes, you can make changes to your coverage during fall open enrollment, which runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

If you have not received an ANOC by the end of September, you should contact your Medicare Advantage Plan or Part D plan to request it. This notice can be very helpful in determining whether you should make any changes to your coverage dur ing the fall open enrollment. Reading your ANOC can also prevent any surprises about your coverage in the new year.

2. Coverage: If you have an Advan tage plan with prescription drug coverage check to see if your doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers and pharmacies will still be in network for 2023. You have the lowest out-of-pocket costs if you go to providers and pharmacies that are in your plan’s network. If you see an out-of-network provider, your plan may not cover any of the cost of your care, leaving you to pay the cost out-of-pocket. You should also contact your providers directly to confirm that they will still be accepting your plan in the coming year.

Here are three types of changes to look for:

1. Costs: If you have a Medicare Ad vantage plan, find out what you can expect to pay for services in 2023. Costs such as deductibles and copayments can change each year. For example, your plan may not have had a deductible in 2022, but it could have one in 2023. A deductible is the amount

The ANOC gives a summary of any changes in your plan’s costs and coverage that will take effect Jan. 1 of the next year. The ANOC is typically mailed with the plan’s “evidence of coverage,” which is a more comprehensive list of the plan’s costs and benefits for the upcoming year.

A good finish should have the left leg straight, the right thigh up close to the left leg, the right foot up on the toe, and the upper body arching back slightly. The trick is that the hips are now “tucked under” the upper body or the stomach is pushed forward. Many beginners, or players who don’t have good core strength, will finish with their hips pushed out behind their upper body. Learn to correct the finish by tucking the hips under or pushing your belt buckle forward in order to feel the correct position. Good leg work will assist in correct hip positioning as well.
