SEBASTIAN MELANI

To complement his studies in Marine Biology at the University of Patagonia, Sebastian Melani accomplished all PADI levels for diving. Upon graduation, he decided to move from his home country of Argentina to Banderas Bay, where he discovered the ideal spot to begin his professional career.

“I settled permanently in Punta de Mita 22 years ago. I was looking for somewhere safe where I could have a balance between good fishing, good diving, and good waves, with the possibility of growth. I found that unique combination here,” he mentions. Paralelamente a sus estudios en Biología Marina en la Universidad de la Patagonia, Sebastian Melani completó todos los niveles PADI para realizar buceo. Al egresar, decidió mudarse de Argentina (su lugar de origen) a la Bahía de Banderas, donde observó un sitio ideal para comenzar a desarrollar su etapa profesional.

“Hace 22 años llegué a Punta de Mita para radicar permanentemente. Previamente, al revisar otros destinos, buscaba un lugar donde pudiera tener un equilibrio entre buena pesca, buen buceo y buenas olas, que a su vez fuera seguro y con posibilidad de crecimiento. Esta combinación única la encontré aquí”, menciona.

A diferencia de la pesca deportiva, la submarina consiste en bucear a pulmón y llevar un arpón (de hecho, en México es ilegal arponear con tanque). “Allá abajo, tú tienes la posibilidad de elegir la especie y su tamaño, por eso decimos que es la forma más precisa de obtener un buen ejemplar”.

During our conversation, Melani shared some of his major achievements: “I held the world record for blue marlin for more than a decade (610 lbs.), and I have the current world record for red snapper (34.6 lbs.)” In addition, he has caught a 298 lbs. yellowfin tuna and an 88 lbs. wahoo.

When asked about his greatest achievement as the head of Spearmex, he replied: “The reason I started this company was to improve the quality of life for the people I employ. My greatest joy is to positively influence the professional development of our staff”.

Durante nuestra conversación, Melani aprovechó para compartirnos algunos de sus principales logros en esta actividad: “Tuve el récord mundial de marlín azul por más de una década (276 kilos) y tengo el récord mundial vigente del huachinango (157 kilos)”. Además, entre otras especies, tiene un atún aleta amarilla de 135 kilos y un wahoo de 40 kilos.

Al preguntarle por su satisfacción más grande al frente de Spearmex, respondió: “La razón por la que comencé esta empresa fue para mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas que la componen. Nuestra mayor dicha es influir positivamente en el desarrollo profesional de nuestro staff”.

Before concluding, Melani shared that in order to find a balance between his work and home life, he and his family like to getaway to the tranquil town of San Sebastián del Oeste to take a break from the ocean waves. “My children and I love mountain biking, so that is our number one hobby while visiting. My family and I also enjoy going out to the excellent restaurants here in our destination. We really enjoy the lifestyle that Vallarta · Nayarit offer us.”

Melani is currently in the launch phase of a brand that will offer a new range of products and experiences aimed exclusively at residents of Banderas Bay who are interested in scuba diving, free diving or snorkeling as a lifestyle, by monthly memberships at an affordable cost.

Antes de finalizar, Melani compartió que, para encontrar un balance con su vida diaria, él y su familia buscan darse una escapada hacia la tranquilidad de San Sebastián del Oeste para relajarse un poco de las olas del mar. “Tanto a mis hijos como a mí nos encanta la bicicleta de montaña, así que ese es el hobby número uno después de la playa. Obviamente, por la diversidad de la gastronomía en el destino, nos encanta salir a comer a algún restaurante y pasear lo más que se pueda. Realmente disfrutamos mucho del estilo de vida que Vallarta · Nayarit nos ofrece”.
