Set with a Pet How Pet Ownership Can Benefit Moody Families

ilitary families endure a lot of stress, whether it is a deployment, TDY or other military challenges that may come along. It’s no wonder some families choose to avoid anything they feel might create additional stress, including owning a pet. But the opposite may be true for you and your family. The mental and physical health benefits a pet can provide are well worth the consideration. One of the greatest advantages a pet can provide is companionship. When a service member at Moody receives orders for a deployment, or community friends move away on orders, consistent companionship is hard to have. With a pet, children and spouses can maintain or bring a pet along with almost any order. Because of the inconsistent pet housing, some families opt out of a pet lifestyle, although most Air Force installations allow up to two dogs, two cats or one of each. (In the instance of relocation, owners can choose to drive their pets across the country stopping at pet-friendly hotels or look into air travel arrangements.) Having a pet can also offer physical benefits by increasing physical activity. Many active and retired Moody personnel have said that pets help them get out of the house and be more physically active as a walking buddy and a social catalyst. Valdosta is home to Freedom Park, located at 3795 Guest Road, just a few miles from base, which offers an off-leash dog park.
nary Clinic
Pet adoption is something to be explored when considering owning an animal. Today, there are millions of loveable, healthy dogs and cats that desperately need homes. Due to overpopulation of homeless pets, four million are euthanized every year. Valdosta offers pet adoption agencies including Lowndes County Animal Services and the Humane Society of Valdosta. The American Classifieds and Valdosta Daily Times classifieds are also Medical options when looking for a pet.

How to Land Your Perfect Job While Stationed at Moody!
F
inding a job in a new area isn’t always the easiest thing to do, but the Valdosta area offers a lot to Moody spouses. Job hunting can be stressful, so remember to factor in your own happiness when looking so you’ll get a job you ENJOY. Marcy Propst, a Moody spouse, and staffing consultant at Express Employment Agency, gives the following advice for landing your dream job: • Get settled in with your family before you start looking for a job, because looking for a job can be a full time job. • Be clear about what type of job you would enjoy. Employers are not interested in someone that wants “just a job”. Be able to articulate clearly what you are looking for with prospective employers. • Start building a network. There are resources at Moody (including other Moody spouses) that can help introduce you to other people in the community. You will find that churches are also a great place to get to know people that know other people. Employment agencies such as Express Employment Professionals can give you access to a network of key decision makers in a wide range of industries and places of employment. And mostWe of themhave are willing to help. This will be your most important asset in looking for just the right job. • Research local companies and organizations. Identify those that are in segments (manufacturing, teaching, health care, etc.) you like or have experience in. There is a wide variety of businesses in Valdosta, so your skills may be of value in a number of segments.
NOW HIRING!
• Start to ask your network if they know anyone that works in one of your targeted companies or organizations. • Check the local newspaper and job sites on the web to see who is hiring. How does this match with what you are looking for. Check it out with your network. • Post your resume on job sites, such as Monster and Career Builder. • Once you have identified some targeted companies, start to send out your resume with a cover letter specific to the company and follow this up with a phone call. Don’t wait to get a response. • When you get an interview, remember it is a two way interview. The hiring manager is trying to determine if you would be a good fit andpositions you are trying towith determineNO if thisFEES is a placeto you would open enjoy working.

RENTING?
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SECURITY DEPOSIT!
R
enting means giving up the pleasures of paying property taxes, repairs, fat mortgage payments and the ability to choose your own carpet and wall colors. It should not mean giving up your security deposit for no good reason. Good landlords don’t want to keep it, anyway. Really. What they want is for tenants to leave the house or apartment in a condition (normal wear and tear excepted) requiring the least effort on their part to re-rent it. As a property manager in Valdosta since 1980, that includes me. In Georgia, there’s not a governmental agency with the power to intervene in most landlord – tenant disputes, so for landlords who won’t play fair with deposits, a tenant’s best friend will be Georgia’s Landlord/ Tenant Act and its interpretation through the Georgia Landlord-Tenant Handbook. In a Q & A format, the 87-page handbook is provided by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (www.dca.ga.gov) and Georgia Legal Aid.

Valdosta’s Hometown Theme Park
For 16 years, Wild Adventures has been the
beloved destination for Moody families, offering entertainment for all generations. It is the area’s number one attraction and it’s not hard to see why – it’s a theme park, water park, animal park and concert venue rolled into one. A trip to Wild Adventures is an affordable, stress-free alternative to Florida theme parks and a short drive from Moody AFB. What sets Wild Adventures apart from other theme parks is the variety of thrills, entertainment and animal interactions for families. Guests of all ages can enjoy the South’s largest ride collection including major wooden and wildadventures.com steel roller coasters like the Cheetah, hundreds of exotic animals, the region’s largest water park and all-star concerts all in a family friendly setting. You can look forward to fantastic shows and festivals all season long too. During the spring and summer, Wild Adventures features major musical acts in the area’s largest outdoor amphitheater. Families also can cool off in Splash Island Water Park, which is included as part of general admission. In October, younger guests love Kid-OWeen while braver souls can face Terror in the Wild. Then in December, celebrate the season at Wild Adventures Christmas. Wild Adventures caters to military families with discounts on park admission at ITT offices, or at the park with a valid military ID. With all that the park has to offer, many families find the season pass to be the best value, as they like to visit again and again. A season pass pays for itself in less than two visits and can be purchased online at wildadventures.com, at the park, or at the ITT office.

WE ARE MILITARY FRIENDLY Thinking about furthering your education while you’re stationed at Moody? There are limitless opportunities!
W
hen it comes to talking about military and college, considering issues such as moving and deployments are important in planning your college path. Valdosta offers a variety of options when deciding to further your education. Georgia Military College (GMC), Wiregrass Georgia Technical College (WGTC) and Valdosta State University (VSU) are excellent options to be explored. All have been designated as Military Friendly School’s by G.I. Jobs magazine, ranking them among the “top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide for their service to military members, veterans, and spouses as students to ensure their success in completing a college degree.”
Georgia Military College (valdosta.gmc.cc.ga.us) In appreciation of our active duty military students, GMC offers a military discount, along with innovative class schedules to allow Moody and our other military students with demanding schedules the ability to finish their classes and their degrees in the shortest amount of time. Georgia Military College Valdosta/Moody AFB campuses have been recognized as a military friendly school for the last four years in part for the many services provided on-site such as academic advisement, VA benefit counseling, and textbook rental. Leslie Hafer, GMC Director 32 MOODY LINK / January 2013
Wiregrass Georgia Technical College (wiregrass.edu) WGTC is proud of its Military friendly distinction as it reflects our commitment to serving those that sacrifice their lives for our freedom. The college works with the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) to provide academic core classes that fit the requirements of CCAF, operates the National Testing Center on Moody Air Force Base for the base community, offers on-base classes in a range of topics, and provides personal contact with each military student to ensure their needs are being met. In addition, several technical and industrial programs donate student and instructor time to military spouses while their loved one is on deployment to help with general maintenance of homes and vehicles. The college participates in annual veterans events and has begun a student organization for veterans attending the college. For more information on WGTC’s efforts to provide education opportunities to military personnel, please call Margaret Brogdon at 229-253-9571. Angela Hobby, Executive Director of Public Relations and Information
Valdosta State University (Valdosta.edu) For many years, Valdosta State has worked with Moody and other regional military bases to serve their educational needs, and facilitating educational oppor-
tunities for active duty military and veterans continues to be a priority. VSU’s Department of Adult and Military Programs (AMP) makes degree completion more seamless for adult learners, with particular attention to members of the military and veterans. “We are carrying on a tradition that has been part of the VSU mission for a long time, in helping meet the educational needs of active duty service members and veterans of the military branches,” said Dr. Jerry Merwin, director of AMP.
“We have permanent, fulltime VSU staff members working at both Moody Air Force Base and Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, and we offer undergraduate and graduate programs at both locations.” For more information on VSU’s Adult and Military Programs, visit www. valdosta.edu/academics/amp/.
Troy University (trojan.troy.edu) “Troy University has a long-standing history with our armed forces. For over half a century, TROY has been proud to work with our military service members to pursue advanced education under the G. I. Bill.
Obtaining a degree or furthering your education while in the military can present additional hurdles. Use these tips to ensure your success! Tip 1- Pursue something you love and stay committed. It won’t be worth it if you only choose a degree based on convenience.
Tip 2… Be organized. Record keeping is essential when transfers could be necessary. Keep contact information for the schools and departments where you attended classes, along with copies of your transcripts.
Tip 3… Stay flexible. We all know the Air Force can throw unexpected and untimely obstacles in the way of everyday life including trying to complete a degree. In order to complete coursework, you may have to take courses as you can or even put education on hold. But don’t be discouraged! Make progress a little at a time.
Tip 4… Communication is key. In order to make career decisions, spouses must consider each other’s goals and come to decisions on how they can best achieve them.
Tip 5… Networking. Make sure to link up with other military spouses who are in the same situation and connect with them and the community of individuals within your academic field and future career. Perks of a traditional university include building professional relationships which could be harder to establish online.
Tip 6…Think ahead. When choosing the field and university at which you would like to study, take into consideration how they might fit with the inevitable moves and possible deployments that come with military life. Determine what sacrifices you would be willing to make. Would you like to attend a traditional university or would an online program still meet your needs and career goals? Also, meet with a counselor at the on-base education center to find out about special discounts offered to Moody families at schools in the area. January 2013 / MOODY LINK 33
We are educational partners with the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, and through our Yellow Ribbon Program, we are here to help our veterans achieve their educational goals as well. Other Moody-friendly options include: -Webster University (webster.edu) degree candidates include active duty and retired military personnel, their spouses, and DOD civilians, federal contractors as well as the general public. Webster provides contemporary and challenging educational opportunities to adult learners while recognizing the motivation and maturity they bring into the classroom. -Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Erau.edu) supports four modes of learning: Classroom, Online, EagleVision Home, and

EagleVision Classroom. Computerized classrooms are also available for students’ needs. There are useful connections at this site as well, such as being part of the new Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) partnership and having a good relationship with the local technical college, WGTC. -Park University (Park.edu/mood) At Park, the goal is to make it as easy and inexpensive as possible for you to complete your degree and to build your success. Park understands what a challenge it is to work full-time, juggle family responsibilities and attend class. That’s why they offer more choices of class times, locations and online options for completing your degree.

SEEDS Business Resource Center
Start, Grow or Expand Your Business
M
oody Air Force Base with nearly 11,000 personnel is a tremendous asset to our community. We appreciate your service to our country, and the SEEDS Business Resource Center offers our services to you. Anyone interested in starting a business can receive free resources compliments of the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber and the SEEDS Center.
Where do I START?
Start with a free consultation at the Chamber. Find out what is required to start a business and discuss the feasibility of your business idea. A detailed industry report will make you aware of recent developments within the industry and which associations and publications are available to give you a better understanding of the business that you are interested in starting. We can help you find out more about your competition with a detailed competitor list. A custom demographic report will help identify how many people are in your target market. Our Guide to Starting a Business provides explanations, addresses, phone numbers and websites that are needed to help you fully prepare to legally start your business in Valdosta-Lowndes and Georgia.
How can I GROW?
Whether you need to apply for a loan or you’re ready to write a business plan for your business, the SEEDS Center has a business plan format and assistance for you. We can help you identify your target market. Reach more of your target market with custom business leads based on the industry or size. Consumer leads can be generated based on search criteria such as age, income or location.
I am ready to EXPAND!
If a high traffic area is vital to your company, request traffic counts to determine the best location for your business or billboard. The SEEDS Center can provide information on available commercial property based on business use and size requirements. We can show you where your competitors are located. Visit www.SEEDSBusinessResourceCenter.com for more information including upcoming business seminars and workshops. Contact Varian Brown at 229-247-8100 today. *Underlined items highlight a few of the many free resources available to assist you your business. You do not need to be a Chamber member to take advantage of all of these resources and services. January 2013 / MOODY LINK 39
