You are beautiful.

Nelson, BC 250 352 3676

WWW.KOOTENAYPRIDE.COM WELCOME TO THE KOOTENAYS Many of you don't need any introduction to this beautiful region, but for those who do, welcome! With Kootenay Pride in its eighteenth year, I couldn't be prouder to be a Nelsonite and Kootenay-native. And what an honour it is to be producing the third annual Official Kootenay Pride Guide 2013 in association with V-Rag Magazine, and Nelson Time Magazine, the Kootenay's newest arts and culture quarterly publication. For those who have supported Pride for the last nearly-two decades, this year proves to be the most inclusive and most Kootenay-wide Pride yet, with events happening in Nelson and Castlegar. For all you newbies, you're in for a real treat! Nelson and the Kootenays have a spirit and atmosphere that's almost tangible, an amazing sense of togetherness and acceptance that makes me proud to call it home. Our annual event is what a Pride celebration should be, a diverse and upbeat festival that brings our community together and invites everyone to join in on the celebration. So if you're a local or a first-timer to the area, I hope you have a fantastic time at this year's 18th Annual Kootenay Pride! K

FACEBOOK.COM/KOOTENAYPRIDE CONNI SMUDGE DRAG QUEEN What does Pride mean to you? Pride is a time to remind ourselves how far we have come and to refresh and renew our views when moving forward. It is a time to rejoice for one simple reason... Because we can! What is it about the Kootenays that draws you back every year as a performer? I really enjoy being part of such a cool, community, homegrown Pride. Seeing faces from far and wide, gathering every year to celebrate and bring like-minded individuals together, whether getting reacquainted with past friends or meeting people for the first time. What's better than that? You were recently featured prominently in Vancouver for Pride. What’s different about smaller rural prides? What makes them important? I think it is the best way to spread Pride's message of Joy, Love & Understanding. Everyone is invited and I really appreciate that. In the bigger cities, some people choose to become jaded and cynical, through chance or circumstance, and I think that's sad. Here in the Koots, people are appreciative, cooperative and really loving... I love and thank you all for your support.

BEAU CREEP BOYLESQUE PERFORMER What does Pride mean to you? Pride to me is a much bigger picture than an fun-filled week of events and a struggle for equal rights in the queer community. To me, Pride is an idea that everyone is, and should be, treated as an equal regardless of any adjective you describe yourself as. Explain the boylesque scene to our readers... The boylesque scene is a quickly expanding sub-culture within the burlesque scene. In some places, the scene is quite small still (I am one of about 3 "boylesquers" in Alberta) but in some larger more metropolitan areas there are whole troupes that are all-male performers. Tell us about your lovely partner Holly von Sinn! I met Holly Von Sinn at one of the shows I was producing back in 2012. She invited me to start performing at one of her monthly shows, and we've been partners ever since. Without her, I would not be where I am today. We currently coproduce 2 monthly revues in Edmonton, Sinners, Freaks, and Geeks and its queer club counterpart Sinners, Freaks, and Queers.

MICHELLE MUNGALL NELSON MLA What does Pride mean to you? Pride is a celebration of our community’s diversity. Such a celebration is one of the most meaningful public statements for the power of love’s ability to overcome hatred, oppression and prejudice. How do you see the Kootenay region in terms of having a progressive attitude towards Pride? We have come a long way since the first Pride. I remember joining the parade when I first moved to the area twelve years ago. Few lined the streets and the parade was followed by someone with a hateful sign that promoted oppression. But we continued on year after year. Today Baker Street is packed with people supporting human rights, love and diversity. What do you predict politically for Nelson’s growing LGBTQ population? I think the LGBTQ community has proven themselves a force to be reckoned with. They have earned the respect of all political leaders regardless of ideology. That’s a great place from which to keep building the movement.

WWW.KOOTENAYPRIDE.COM JUDITH STEIN BURLESQUE PERFORMER What does Pride mean to you? Pride is a celebration of our diversity, embracing all genders and sexual orientations. How has the burlesque scene changed and evolved since you started performing? Burlesque has become more mainstream and accessible. When I started, it was considered only what "bad girls" would do, and many performers were girls who had no other choices. Burlesque gave them a chance to travel and be financially independent, and to step away form the norm of nice girl boundaries. Today it is legitimized and considered a true art form. Why did you decide on the Kootenays to make your home? I decided to move to the Kootenays after performing here a number of times, and in my own way I named it a "theme park for aging hippies". I am a county girl at heart, and revel in the mountains and lakes, and the diversity in the Kootenay community. I look normal here!

PATRICK MASSE COUNTRY PERFORMER What does Pride mean to you? It means community! A gathering of people celebrating our diverse community! How long have you been performing? Since I was 14, when I entered the PNE talent showcase. How has being an out country singer changed or affected your career and your music? Not gonna lie, I took a beating and backlash in country music, but I'm glad I did it. It was very liberating! It also opened my music up to a whole new group of fans. It also made me try new things! I mean, my current music is now being produced by R'n'B and hip hop producers. I would have never expanded my music like that in the past. What can fans expect from Patrick Masse in the future? Well, my new single "Little Bit of Saturday" is on the radio now. A music video for it comes out soon. We will also hit the road for a radio and promo tour very soon!

VERA WAY DRAG QUEEN What does Pride mean to you? Pride is about remembering our history, celebrating with your peers, reminding yourself that you are not alone, and collectively finding a path forward. Is this your first time heading to Nelson? Yes it will be my first time going to Nelson, and I have heard great things! What can the uninitiated expect from a Vera Way show? Entertainment, excitement, de-litement, giggles and fun! Who or what do you draw inspiration from? My inspiration comes from all over. From science fiction and fantasy to music and movies, from books and stories to just plain ideas. Everything is inspiration if you just give it a chance. What is the importance of rural Prides in your opinion? They are very important because they give people a way to connect with others and not feel alone. Like they're the only one. It's especially important in rural areas, as people can be spread farther apart and feel isolated.

SPIRIT BAR, NELSON

ELEMENT NIGHTCLUB, CASTLEGAR

While Spirit Bar resembles a nightclub you might expect to find in an urban, cosmopolitan centre, it is infused with a spirit that is distinctly Nelson; inclusive and diverse by design, it's Nelson’s entertainment hub, hosting established and upcoming acts both local and international. Conni Smudge will be hosting Saturday's Hot Divas & Cool Queens drag show alongside names like Vera Way, Jackie A Go-Go & Ryder Goode! The vibe is friendly, and, taken in with an impressive LED lighting array, killer sound system, and slick finishing, cements Spirit Bar as Nelson’s preferred nightspot. Have a drink there or in one of the two other bars situated in The Hume Hotel, Mike's Place and The Library, home of the Pride Mimosa Breakfast.

Thanks to Element Nightclub, Castlegar is hosting its third Pride event! That's right, Kootenay Pride is no longer confined to Nelson, but has expanding out into the rest of the region for a historic night on Friday August 29th, Fire and Ice with Judith Stein, Beau Creep, Holly Von Sinn and DJ Wallis. The 600 seat award winning resto-club in downtown Castlegar features a state-ofthe-art sound system and light show that needs to be heard and seen to be believed. With nightly DJs and live entertainment, Element is a slice of inner city life dropped into the heart of the Kootenays. For over 5 years, the venue has seen the likes of Mark Farina, Benny Benassi, Naughty By Nature and K-OS. Thanks for adding Pride to the list!

BIBO, NELSON

FINLEY'S IRISH GRILL, NELSON

It's definitely patio season here in Nelson and one of the most beautiful spots downtown is at BiBO. Nothing says summer quite like Italian and Mediterranean tapas and wine on a garden deck overlooking the city. This is the type of place you could spend the entire evening at and not even notice until the hanging lights come on. With its rustic charm and heritage brickwork blending with modern furnishings and a distinct metropolitan feel, you'll probably think you've been transported to one of New York's famous cafes. The menu will also impress the most discerning palette. Come for the patio, stay for the view of the Sunday Burnin' Up Street Party, and enjoy a glass of BC wine in BiBO's special Pride Wine Garden.

Finley's Irish Pub & Grill is where Nelson comes to eat the finest pub food in the region, and party all week long. Open 7 days a week from morning til... well, morning, Finley's is a Nelson institution. It's got one of the finest lake views in the city, as well as a reputation for being the centre of the party. By day, you can try one of their signature burgers, voted the best in Nelson, and by night, check out one of their many weekly club events, such as karaoke, open mic, DJs and pool competitions. So where better to hold the annual Kootenay Pride Meet & Greet than at Finley's? Friday at 6pm, come down and say hi to friendly faces, whether they're old acquaintances or brand new friends. $15 gets you a burger and a beer!

LAKESIDE PARK, NELSON

RED SANDS NUDE BEACH, NELSON

After a night (or several nights) of partying, there's nothing better than collapsing onto a pristine white sandy beach nestled on Kootenay Lake. Definitely the epicenter of the summer tourism boom, Lakeside Park has it all. Tennis courts, lawn bowling, a labyrinth, picnic tables, a concession stand, soccer fields and a gorgeous waterfront walkway. Oh yeah, and that beach! While it can get fairly busy on a hot sunny day, you'll always be able to find a spot to sunbathe, people watch and enjoy views of the lake and the Big Orange Bridge (affectionately known as Bob). The park is a short walk from downtown, the mall, and the Nelson Tramway, and worth enjoying a cool post-Pride dip in the lake!

For the more adventurous traveller, Red Sands Nude Beach offers just that... beautiful red sand, warm private water and a place to bare all. At the end of Bealby Point Road, just a short stroll through a forested area will reveal an all-natural oasis that looks more Caribbean than Canadian. Although Red Sands is considered one of the best nude beaches in British Columbia, it's remained undeveloped and true to the spirit of the 1960s. It may be wellknown among locals, but it will never seem crowded or overly busy, even on a hot long weekend afternoon. Of course, all are welcome, nude or not, and the beach is worth seeing just for its incredible views of the North Shore.
