STURGIS BIKE RALLY 2018 The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a long-running tradition that has been going on back since the 1930s. A motorcycle gang thought it would be fun to have a few rounds on their hogs. Just a couple of friends, looking to have a good time. That is how the first ever Rally took place in Sturgis. Back then all they have were a couple of people that came to spectate the riders do their thing. STURGIS HISTORY Sturgis History, In 1938 there was a small group of people that called themselves the Jackpine Gypsies and their founder, and the father of the Sturgis Biker Rally, Clarence "Pappy" Hoel. Hole was a resident of the town and worked in his family’s ice business. However after the invention of the refrigerator, business wasn’t looking too good for the Hole household. It is then that Pappy decided to buy an Indian motorcycle franchise in the year 1936. Soon after that, we got the first ever Sturgis Rally called the Black Hills Classic at the time.
The 1938 Sturgis Rally consisted of a single race and only had around nine participants. However, after that one race, the town would come to realize their passion for the way of the biker and the rest is history.
